Tottenham Hotspur caught the attention of Leeds United fans on Wednesday evening after a social media post that looked awfully familiar in some aspects.

Spurs have spent this week gearing up for their Europa League semi-final clash against Bodo/Glimt, with the first-leg to kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening before they head to Norway next week. It’s been a disappointing campaign overall for Ange Postecoglou’s side but they have a great chance of making it to the final in Bilbao to hopefully end a 17-year trophy drought.

Postecoglou’s decision to rotate heavily in the Premier League would suggest all his eggs are in the Europa League basket and anticipation is building ahead of their semi-final clash, with the club’s official X account posting a brief aerial video of their stadium. In the clip, fans can be heard singing ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ but it is the caption that piqued Leeds' interest.

In both the video and text section of the X post, they wrote: “Marching in. Together”. And of course Leeds fans quickly picked up how similar it is to the title of their world-famous song, ‘Marching On Together’, with plenty pointing it out in the posts comment section.

Could Archie Gray be on his way to a major trophy?

A lot of Leeds fans will have a vested interest in Spurs’ Europa League prospects, given it could see Archie Gray claim major silverware in only his second campaign of senior football. The 19-year-old left West Yorkshire for North London in a £40million deal last summer, having suffered play-off heartbreak at Wembley, and has been excellent down south.

Injury issues mean Gray has spent much of his debut campaign at Spurs in central defence, but the teenager has stood strong during a difficult season and impressed. Leeds will welcome him back to Elland Road next season and if his defensive spell continues, there could even be a battle against younger brother Harry.

The 16-year-old made his first-team debut off the bench last week as Leeds thumped Stoke City 6-0, a result which eventually sealed promotion following Sheffield United’s defeat at Burnley. Gray was back on under-21 duty in the week and spoke to LUTV of his ambitions for the next 12 months.

“I’m enjoying it, it’s been a good week to be honest,” he said of all the celebratory scenes after the U21s’ cup triumph. “I just want more, I want to keep scoring goals but hopefully [in the] first-team and next year prove myself.”

Djed Spence insists there is no limit on the level former Leeds United and current Tottenham Hotspur teammate Archie Gray can reach.

Spence has had a rare inside track on Gray’s individual development though his first two years in senior football, having spent the first-half of last season on loan at Elland Road before reuniting with the teenager in north London. Spurs signed the latter in a £40million deal from Leeds last summer but few would have expected him to be playing Premier League football with his former teammate.

Even fewer would have expected Gray to be playing alongside Spence at the back, with the 18-year-old’s impressive versatility put to the test during a long spell in central defence during an injury crisis at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But despite the huge step up from Championship to Premier League, and yet another positional change, the Thorp Arch academy graduate has been like a duck to water.

Djed Spence on Spurs teammate Archie Gray

Leeds fans have known for a long time how high their former star’s potential is but standout performances in the Premier League and Europe have caught the eye of a much wider audience. Spence is the only other professional footballer to work alongside Gray in Yorkshire and London, and he expects the teenager to go on to do great things.

“The sky is the limit for him to be honest,” Spence told Rio Ferdinand Presents on YouTube. “I forget he’s 18 sometimes. Sometimes I have to look at myself, the opposition he’s playing against at 18. He’s a midfielder playing centre-back, and he’s doing well. He’s a great talent.”

Spence is earning plenty of praise himself this season, with the full-back battling his way back into Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans. The 24-year-old was expected to leave Tottenham permanently following three difficult loan spells at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa but has instead become one of the top-flight club’s most consistent performers of an admittedly difficult campaign.

Spence opens up on ‘hard’ loan spells including at Leeds United

A season-long loan switch to Leeds was cut short by the Championship club last January, with manager Daniel Farke explaining the importance of club values when explaining the decision. A six-month move to Genoa failed to set the world alight either, and Spence has opened up on the difficulties of moving around multiple times.

“It wasn’t easy, I went to Tottenham to play but things didn't work out,” the full-back added. “It's hard because you've got to move out, I went abroad so I had to move abroad. No friends when you go abroad because there’s no one there. My family stayed in London. So you go, meet your new teammates and then leave, meet another set of teammates, yeah you’re just not settled.

“When I went to Leeds, they said the [Spurs] manager hasn't seen much of me so I need to go out and play, prove myself sort of thing. That's when I went to Leeds, that didn't quite work out, obviously I got an injury and stuff.”

Asked which loan move he enjoyed most, Spence told Rio Ferdinand presents: “Genoa, I felt loved when I was a Genoa so it was nice.”

Fresh reports have emerged surrounding transfer interest in Harry Gray but it will be of little surprise to Leeds United that top clubs are eyeing their top talent.

TBR Football reported on Wednesday afternoon that Tottenham Hotspur are among three Premier League teams interested in signing Gray, who is the younger brother of their £40million summer signing from Leeds, Archie. The 18-year-old got his break into senior football under Daniel Farke last season and emerged as one of England’s brightest young talents before heading to north London in July.

That summer saw Harry, a 15-year-old at the time, get his first senior minutes during Leeds’ pre-season friendly against League Two Harrogate Town and despite a disruptive back problem, the young striker has regularly been involved in first-team training while playing for the under-21s. Alongside Spurs, TBR Football claim Arsenal and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on the teenager.

Harry Gray transfer ‘interest’

There is a large gap to bridge, however, between holding an interest in someone and actively pursuing their signature, with Leeds reportedly ‘confident’ they can keep hold of Gray for the long-term. They were in a similar situation with his older brother for some time, with top clubs known to have been keeping an eye on the energetic midfielder long before his first-team debut against Cardiff City in August 2023.

Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool and Manchester City were among the teams linked with interest in Archie, but his family and agents prioritised a clearer path to first-team football with Leeds. That path is likely to remain clearer for Harry than aforementioned suitors like Tottenham or Arsenal.

Furthermore, news of Premier League interest in Harry is nothing new for Leeds. There have been eyes on the 16-year-old striker for a long time, given his ability to keep scoring goals right through the age levels. That he is regularly training with senior players at Thorp Arch will be another pull.

Farke on Harry Gray’s future

While Farke has not made it a priority to blood youth - his main goal is promotion - the Leeds boss has handed out first-team debuts to those he sees as deserving and so it is possible Harry Gray gets his shot at some point in the not-too-distant future. Charlie Crew, James Debayo and Sam Chambers have all received minutes this season, albeit they are all at least two years older than their 16-year-old teammate.

"With Harry, like always you know before a player really makes his first step into the spotlight I'm always careful not to speak about his strengths and praise him too much," Farke said of the teenager earlier this month. "He's with us and trains well, develops well and got match experience with the 21s, is doing really well.

“His rehab is done and has been back in team training for several weeks. We'll look carefully after him. We won't rush it too much. We're happy we have him. He's a player in the category of Sam Chambers who can play an important part in our future."

The Professional Footballers' Association named their six nominees earlier this week, which includes Spence among them.

A former Elland Road loanee, Spence had his time at Leeds cut short 14 months ago and was subsequently sent back to parent club Spurs. Spence made just seven appearances whilst on loan with Leeds, struggling with injuries throughout his stint, and was in the end not favoured by Daniel Farke, who elected to send the full-back packing during the first few days of the January window.

The 24-year-old went on to join Genoa in a loan move which ran until the end of the 2023/24 campaign before returning to North London over the summer with his Tottenham future somewhat uncertain.

However, due to an injury crisis under head coach Ange Postecoglou, Spence has been handed an opportunity this season and lately made the left-back spot his own at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has 20 appearances across all competitions this term, while starting nine of Spurs' last 12 Premier League matches.

Who is in the running for Young Player of the month?

Among the fellow nominees for February's award, Spence is joined by Beto (Everton), Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace), Yankuba Minteh (Brighton and Hove Albion) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool).

Leeds have two nominations by the PFA for the Championship edition of the award with Junior Firpo and Joel Piroe up for the second tier gong.

Dan James and Daniel Farke, meanwhile, are nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Player and Manager of the Month prizes, respectively.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke admits he had Saturday's game at Hull City in mind when he replaced Manor Solomon against Blackburn Rovers but that wasn't the only reason behind the change.

The Israel international had just produced the cross of the game, taking his marker down the left flank towards the byline and putting a dangerous ball right through the Rovers six-yard box for a sliding Daniel James. James was unable to make contact with the ball, the chance went begging and Solomon then saw his number go up on the substitutes board.

His response was to hold his arms out questioningly towards the Leeds bench and then he took off his gloves and threw them into the Elland Road dugout.

But while Farke wanted to protect the Tottenham Hotspur loanee, who has started to show the form he was expected to be capable of in the Championship, there was a tactical element to the substitution. As Solomon went off, on came Patrick Bamford to partner with fellow substitute Mateo Joseph up top. Farke wanted two strikers and more crosses into the area.

READ: Farke addresses non-use of ‘natural replacement’ during full-back crisis against Blackburn.

The German believes his change worked out, because it was a cross from Max Wober - who took on the left wing-back role in a formation switch - that was flicked on by Bamford and led to a foul on Joseph in the area. Pascal Struijk converted from the spot to make it 1-0 on 88 minutes, before Rovers equalised two minutes later to secure a 1-1 draw.

"We wanted to change the approach to two strikers in the box and to work a bit more with crosses," said Farke. "I wanted a left-footed player like Max [Wober] who can play wing-back. Manor naturally curls inside and goes for one-v-one situation. Obviously it was the plan to have a left-footed player who was good with crosses and it paid off with the penalty situation, a good cross from Max. You have to keep in mind another game in three days and hopefully Manor is fit for this game again. You have to take sometimes decisions anyhow. Obviously I would like to just bring players in, like Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph, and leave all the other offensive players also on the pitch. But it's not possible. Sometimes you have to substitute one or two players, and of course, they want to play each every minute. That's quite normal. Was just due to the situation that our approach was different and to work a bit more with crosses."

Solomon made his Leeds debut against Saturday’s hosts Hull back at the end of August and supplied an assist for a Joseph goal. But the winger picked up a hamstring issue, which stemmed from an initial back problem, and then took time to get back into his rhythm. Two goals in the 4-3 win at Swansea City hinted that Solomon might be nearing something closer to his best form and then he scored and added two more assists in the rout of strugglers Oxford United. After 18 appearances for the Whites, half of which have been starts, he has three goals and three assists to his name.

Leeds United sold the former Elland Road star over the summer.

Leeds United were ‘heartbroken’ to sell Archie Gray over the summer as he pursued a move to the Premier League. The 18-year-old is one of the most exciting young talents in the country and new manager Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for him after Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League win over Ferencváros.

Gray has started both of Spurs’ European fixtures so far and has showcased his impressive versatility. After featuring at right-back against Qarabag, Postecoglou deployed him at centre-back in the first half in Hungary, before moving him to left-back after the break. Despite primarily being a midfielder, Gray continues to show how easily he can slot into a number of positions. It was something he regularly did in his breakthrough season for the Whites, as he was deployed at right-back and in central midfield by Daniel Farke.

“I thought Archie was brilliant today. We asked him to play in two different positions and it's incredible how he just adjusts and he's able to bring his game to wherever we put him,” the Tottenham boss told football.london.

“I felt like we were starting to get on top and stronger. Archie has got a great capacity to run, and I thought putting him at left-back, he would be able to get forward for us more, and Ben [Davies] with his ability to defend and his left-foot meant he could get the ball out to the left side.

“I just wanted to use Archie’s energy, as much as anything. He did a good job for us first half but I just felt in the second half we could put them under more pressure if we had somebody on the left-hand side in the same way as the right-hand side who could get forward and get back. I thought he did that really well. In his first run he ran the whole pitch. It helped us balance our attacks on both sides.”

After interest from several clubs over the summer, Gray signed for Spurs in a £40 million deal. Leeds released a statement expressing the ‘heartbreak’ to see a homegrown talent leave Elland Road but stressed how the sale helped provide funds to ‘improve the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion’.

Your round-up of the latest Leeds United stories as Saturday’s Championship clash against Coventry City edges closer.

Leeds United have the chance to cement their early promotion credentials when they host Coventry City at Elland Road on Saturday. Daniel Farke’s men returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at 10-man Cardiff City last weekend - their third win in four - and can climb further up the table with three more points.

Farke confirmed on Thursday that he will be without Manor Solomon, Dan James and Max Wober this weekend while there are question marks over the availability of Pascal Struijk. Coventry City have a few injury problems of their own and have struggled to get going thus far, and the YEP has rounded up some of the latest stories from Elland Road in the meantime.

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as the latest Premier League club to be linked with former Leeds star Raphinha. Fabrizio Romano claims the north London club have ‘always appreciated’ Raphinha, who was heavily linked with a move away from Barcelona all summer with reports suggesting he could cost £85million.

Raphinha left Leeds for Barcelona in 2022 and has cemented himself as a key player under new manager Hansi Flick, who handed him the captain’s armband recently in Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s absence. But financial issues at Camp Nou mean most players have a price and Spurs have joined the long list of admirers.

“Raphinha has always been attractive to several clubs, not only in Europe, when Barcelona signed him from Leeds there was interest from Chelsea and interest from Arsenal,” Romano told his YouTube channel. “He’s always been a player of interest for Tottenham, they have always appreciated him.”

Wober twist

Max Wober was reportedly of interest to Premier League outfit Wolves towards the end of the summer transfer window. GiveMeSport claim Molineux recruitment chiefs were keen on Wober but found themselves ‘unable to stump up the cash’ for the Leeds defender.

Wober’s future remained uncertain throughout the summer, with the Austrian not publicly commenting on his stance until after the transfer window closed. A return to loan club Borussia Monchengladbach always seemed a feint possibility but it seems another option was on the cards.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil wanted defensive additions after losing Max Kilman to West Ham for £40m, but the Midlands club were ‘left frustrated’ at being priced out of a move for Wober. The 26-year-old will stay at Leeds for the foreseeable but is yet to start a league game, with injury issues not helping.

For Gray, that meant a full debut arriving against familiar opposition, the teen ace starting both of last season’s Championship clashes against the Sky Blues who took a 1-1 draw from December’s clash at Elland Road and then subjected the Whites to a 2-1 defeat in April’s contest at the CBS Arena.

Five months on, Gray found himself starting at the ground again and his side looked to be heading for a third round exit after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s strike in the 63rd minute gave the Sky Blues a 1-0 lead.

Spurs, though, ultimately squeezed through as late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson sealed a 2-1 win, after which Gray served up big praise for United’s Championship rivals Coventry as his affinity for Leeds also remained clear in recalling last season’s clashes against the Sky Blues.

"It's a difficult place to come to," Gray told Sky Sports.

"I played here last year and even at our ground last year, they always bring a tough game and there's always lots of transitions. That's the way they play and they did well in this game and the fans got behind them.

“They brought a good game to us and credit to them but we always knew that we had what it took to take it right to the end but they did very well and I thought their game plan was executed very well."

Coventry sit 14th in the early Championship table with just five points from five games played but Mark Robins’ side are rated among the main promotion contenders by the bookmakers.

One of Leeds United’s promising academy talents is reportedly on the radar of several Premier League clubs

Leeds United make their return to Championship action this weekend as they welcome Burnley to Elland Road on Saturday afternoon in arguably their biggest test of the season so far.

The Whites are unbeaten in their opening four league games, as they recorded back-to-back wins over Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday before the international break after starting the season with draws against Portsmouth and at West Brom. The latter sit second in the table, with their only dropped points coming against Leeds.

Daniel Farke’s full focus will be on matters on the pitch with the transfer window well behind clubs, although the rumour mill has continued to churn and one Leeds youngster is reportedly attracting interest from several Premier League clubs. Harry Gray, the younger brother of Archie, is of interest to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United claims TBR Football. The 15-year-old, who turns 16 next month, scored eight goals in 11 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last term.

His older brother Archie made the move to Spurs during the summer as a £40m deal was agreed between Leeds and the North London club. Harry Gray is unable to sign professional terms at Leeds until he turns 17 in October 2025 but, like Archie, has strong connections to Leeds through his family.

The pair’s father Andy Gray played for Leeds while their grandfather Frank Gray was part of the Leeds side that won the First Division with the Whites in 1974. Their uncle is Leeds legend Eddie Gray, who the First Division twice and an FA Cup and League Cup while playing for the club. Speaking earlier this year, Archie Gray admitted he had hopes of playing alongside his brother one day and backed his sibling to make the senior side at Elland Road.

There’s never been a better time to sign up to Inside Elland Road with Graham Smyth - offering unrivalled and in-depth coverage of Leeds United

“He’s a good player, I don’t want to say too much,” Archie told Sky Sports in March while still at Leeds. “He’ll get big headed. If he keeps training hard I’m sure he’ll be doing what I’m doing. I’d love to play with him one day, it would be like Eddie and Frank again.”

Leeds supporters got a first glance of Harry Gray during pre-season after Farke named the player on the bench before bringing him on for the final 15 minutes in a pre-season victory over League Two Harrogate Town. Given his brother Archie’s progress into the senior side last season, Harry has seen the pathway that is there at Elland Road for the club’s academy stars.

Leeds would be understandably be resistant to approaches for Harry Gray. However, he is not yet under professional terms. Transfers of minors are regulated by football’s governing body FIFA and must meet specific requirements, including consent by the player’s parent(s) or legal guardian. By way of a transfer fee, clubs receive a compensation payment for their role in the training and development of the young player.

Manchester City swooped for attacking midfielder Finlay Gorman last season, who was born in 2008, with the Premier League champions paying a seven-figure compensation fee to Leeds.

Former Leeds United defender Djed Spence has been left out of Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur squad for the UEFA Europa League group stage.

Spurs were forced to reduce their available squad size to 23 players as the club did not comply meet UEFA's homegrown and as a result have elected to leave out ex-Elland Road loanee Spence and Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon.

Archie Gray, on the other hand, has been registered in the 23-man group and is forecast to feature regularly in European competition this season due to the gruelling schedule Spurs' first XI will be subjected to, as well as the limited full-back options now available to Postecoglou.

Spence's loan deal at Leeds was cut short last season with Daniel Farke preferring to entrust Archie Gray and Sam Byram with starting responsibilities at right-back, after just a handful of appearances by the ex-Middlesbrough defender.

The 24-year-old can be registered in the squad at a later date, should Spurs progress beyond the group stage, however the club's decision to omit Spence suggests he is not as highly thought of compared to other wide defensive options in Postecoglou's squad, despite returning to the frame this summer.

Eighteen-year-old Gray was an unused substitute as Spurs lost 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James' Park last weekend and joins up with England's Under-21 setup thsi week. He has so far appeared off the bench in Premier League games against Leicester City and Everton but is expected to feature more prominently on international duty, as well as in the weeks to come when Spurs take on their Europa League opponents.
