On the volley!

Leeds pressure

First attack

Underway!

Teams out

In sunshine but windy sunshine at Elland Road.

Cheers

Only a few but cheers nonetheless from a few home fans for Archie Gray as Spurs team is read out. Applause then as he takes his seat on the bench.

All set at Elland Road

Warm ups done. Tottenham are marginal favourites, just. 13-8 Spurs but 7-4 Leeds. 5-2 the draw. Given their midweek exertions and injuries, this appears as good a time as any to face Thomas Frank’s side. Prediction: 1-1 - from myself and also chief reporter Graham Smyth. That’s fav in the correct score market too.

Warm-ups underway

Archie Gray one of the first out for Spurs, with a spring in his step, Ampadu then leads out the Whites. The sun is even coming out, still windy though.

Spurs team news, Richarlison benched, Gray also among the subs

Team news in full

Leeds team

Leeds United team vs Tottenham: Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Struijk, Gudmundsson; Ampadu, Longstaff, Stach; Aaronson, Okafor, Calvert-Lewin. Subs: Meslier, Justin, Bijol, Bornauw, Gruev, Tanaka, Harrison, Nmecha, Piroe.

The weather

Not too bad all things considered, very strong gusts of wind mainly at up to 52mph and showers on and off, but they are forecast to clear up. We might even get some sunshine later. But the wind is here to stay and that’s making it feel several degrees colder than it is - about ten degrees but real feel six. So wrap up. Game will be an interesting watch in this wind.

The railings have had it

Looking good despite the weather

Leeds United's game against Tottenham Hotspur is unlikely to become a family affair due to injury and Daniel Farke has been quick to put a stop to any brotherly comparisons.

Archie Gray makes his Elland Road return with Spurs, 15 months after a £40m move from his boyhood club. Elland Road was graced by his grandfather Frank and great uncle Eddie. His dad Andy played for Leeds. His brother Harry will play for Leeds, before too long. The striker will be 17 in a few days and he's already on the fringe of Farke's first team, well positioned to follow in the many well-trodden familial footsteps. He's the jewel in the Thorp Arch crown and has scored goals at every level of youth football.

A hip flexor issue has cast doubt on any potential involvement for Gray when his brother and Spurs come to town on Saturday, but even if he was fully fit he still has to climb further up the pecking order at Leeds. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the undoubted first-choice number 9 with Lukas Nmecha tucked in behind. Joel Piroe, a very different player to Calvert-Lewin and Nmecha, is likely the third cab off the rank. Gray has been around Farke's squad for more than a year, made his senior debut last season aged 16 and was on the bench for the Wolves game.

It's perfectly possible that neither Gray gets onto the pitch during Saturday's lunchtime kick-off. Archie started the opening game of the Premier League season against Burnley but has had just one brief substitute cameo since then. In midweek he came off the bench in the Champions League and helped set up an important equaliser. He remains a very good option for Thomas Frank, for a number of positions.

Brotherly competitiveness and the younger Gray's personality being what it is, he would dearly love to play against and get one over on his big brother at Elland Road this weekend. Archie made a Premier League squad at the age of 15 but never played in the top flight for Leeds, having to wait until he was 17 to make his senior debut, under Farke in the Championship. What the elder brother did once he established himself in the first team is difficult for any teenager to replicate but Farke says comparisons between the two Grays and how they develop are almost useless. Not only because it puts pressure on a very young teenager.

"Archie's way how to develop as a young player and show maturity is always a role model for each and every young player," said the German. "But I don't want to put too much weight on Harry's shoulders. He's playing in a different position and you need different skills and even personality. You need natural arrogance, not to be too big time, but in terms of self confidence and being cheeky. Just give me the ball and I'm the main man. I wouldn't compare too much. He's still on the way to develop and he's a different age."

Where Archie played right-back and central in one of the Championship's best teams, Harry is a striker in the Premier League at a newly-promoted club. Farke says the difference in positions alone make the two players' situations apples and oranges. And the careers of some of the world's best strikers tell a tale of how much expectation Harry Gray should carry right now.

"It's a bit easier to shine, sorry, in the Championship at full-back than to shine as a striker against top, top centre-backs," said Farke. "You can't expect a young striker, 16, 17, 18 to shine with consistency at Premier League level. Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane, they were not regulars at Premier League level at [this] young age scoring goals. There are very rare examples - Erling Haaland is a different way but he went to senior football at 18 in a league that was not the best in the world, with all respect. It's easier there to find your confidence and goalscoring boots than in the Premier League. Lewandowski started to score goals in his mid 20s, Harry Kane is more or less the same. I don't expect a young striker to score goal after goal at 16, 17, 18, 19. You can shine on the wing or as a full-back but as a striker you have to be patient."

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has served up rich Leeds United praise ahead of Saturday’s trip to Elland Road and declared his Whites man delight.

Frank faced Leeds seven times as Brentford boss and the Dane is now approaching his first clash against the Whites as Tottenham manager in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at Elland Road.

In doing so, Frank says he will be stepping out at “one of the best” stadiums the game has to offer and facing a manager whose success has been music to the ears of the Tottenham boss.

Frank has yet to face Farke as Leeds boss but the pair had five battles when the German was in charge of Norwich City in which Farke’s Canaries were not beaten once by Frank’s Brentford side.

The pair are now set to lock horns in what will be just their second Premier League battle for a test that Frank is relishing but with a warning about what will be needed in Tottenham’s bid for success.

"First and foremost Leeds, they have done very well since they got promoted,” said Frank at his pre-match press conference, as quoted by Tottenham Hotspur’s official website.

“Daniel Farke and his staff have done well. I've big respect for Daniel. I've known him for many years, he's a good colleague and friend in the game. We battled against each other quite a few times in the Championship and in the Premier League. I'm so happy that he's doing well and that they got a good start.

“Elland Road, I always admire as one of the best stadiums to go to, because the atmosphere is fantastic.

“It's a game we're looking forward to. I'm very aware that they haven't lost once in more than a year so, clearly, and we know that because of their fans and their home ground, they've been very good. I think the way they started the Premier League gives them a lot of confidence. They defend extremely well. They give very little away in open play.

“So, we need to really be aware of that and really know that this is a game that can be 90 minutes back and forth. Small setbacks you need to overcome, but we're ready for it, we look forward to it and we'll do what we can to go for three points.”

Earlier this year Ampadu joined club staff on a visit to Leeds Children's Hospital and surprised three-year-old Noah Butterfield with club merchandise and a personal invitation to Thorp Arch training ground. Noah was in hospital being treated for lymphoma which had spread, caused a tumour on his brain and the subsequent loss of his sight.

At the end of August Noah was able to ring the bell to signal the end of his treatment and having left hospital he was reunited with Ampadu at Thorp Arch. The youngster's visit was filmed by LUTV and cameras caught him charming various members of the squad including Illan Meslier, Willy Gnonto, Sam Byram and Daniel James. Ampadu led the youngster on a behind-the-scenes tour and he was taken out to the training pitch while the team were put through their paces. Noah's family are lifelong Leeds fans and were introduced to one of their favourite players Jonny Howson, who has returned to the club as an Under 21 coach this year.

Ampadu, who had more gifts for Noah, has also invited him to be mascot for Saturday's game against Spurs.

A club spokesperson said: "Leeds United were proud to welcome young supporter Noah and his parents to Thorp Arch recently, where they received an exclusive tour from club captain Ethan Ampadu.

"Noah was incredibly brave throughout his battle and time in hospital, taking everything in his stride with a smile on his face and at the end of August, he rang the bell to signal the end of his treatment. Once out of hospital, Noah was able to get to the club’s training ground. The youngster was met with plenty of compliments for his Leeds United away kit during his visit and his energy was infectious around Thorp Arch, as he engaged with players and staff as well as excitedly offering out high-fives to everyone.

Leeds United will now have the pleasure of seeing Noah again, this time at Elland Road for the game against Tottenham Hotspur, with the club captain inviting him to be a mascot for our Premier League clash. We are grateful to have you as part of the Leeds United family and we look forward to welcoming you back, Noah."

Tottenham Hotspur will hope summer signing Xavi Simons can prove the doubters wrong when they visit Leeds United on Saturday lunchtime.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig star is yet to find the net in his first six appearances for Thomas Frank’s side after making a reported £51 million move to North London during the final week of the summer transfer window. Simons has also produced just one assist during that time as he provided the ball for Pape Matar Sarr to open the scoring in his side’s 3-0 win at West Ham United on his debut.

Much has been said about Simons’ role in the Spurs side, with many expecting him to feature in a ‘number ten’ position, rather than on the left-hand side of a front three. However, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has questioned the signing of the Netherlands international after watching him in action during Spurs’ Champions League draw against Bodo/Glimt in midweek.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Aston Villa forward said: “Simons, I’m not sure about. It’s early on, we don’t want to judge players after five, six games, but I’m really not sure about him. You know, sometimes you see a player and you’re like, ‘Oh okay, I like him, yeah, yeah, I like what he’s about.’ But I watch Simons and I’m like, ‘Oh, he’s on the floor.’ He doesn’t seem rapidly quick when I watch him as well.”

Former Whites boss shock at Leeds United offer

Daniel Farke will hope to guide Leeds United to a win when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday lunchtime and take another step towards securing the Whites’ Premier League status.

After securing promotion by landing the Championship title, the former Norwich City boss has led his side to eight points from their first six games of the season and that represents the Whites’ best start in the top flight since Marcelo Bielsa was patrolling the touchline at Elland Road. There is a natural tendency to compare the current boss with his predecessors and one former Whites boss has referenced his time at Leeds when discussing what could come next in his career.

This month marks the ten-year anniversary of Steve Evans’ appointment as Leeds manager as the Scot penned a rolling contract at Elland Road. His reign would last until the end of the season after guiding the Whites to a thirteenth place finish in the Championship and into the quarter-final of the FA Cup. Evans had spells in charge of Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Gillingham and Stevenage and has been out of work since leaving Rotherham United earlier this year.

The 62-year-old is now keen to get back into the dugout and he referenced his time at Leeds as he set out his plans for the future.

He told The Daily Mail: “I would like a project, maybe in League Two. That’s the reality. But I never thought I would work at Leeds United, and I did. So you never know. I have rarely failed in my career. I have either kept clubs up or got them promoted, or put structures in place that are benefiting them now. I am ready for more.”

A star Tottenham attacker has joined a key quartet in being ruled out out of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Leeds United at Elland Road but an international is set to return.

Key striker Dominic Solanke was added to the list of those definitely out earlier this week when boss Thomas Frank confirmed that the forward would have minor surgery on an ankle injury.

Frank was already without key men James Maddison (ACL rupture), Radu Dragusin (ACL) and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) with longer term injuries.

Solanke had been struggling with his ankle injury at a time when another main striker option in Randal Kolo Muani had been battling against a dead leg.

Kolo Muani, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, again missed Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Bodo-Glint despite a positive update on the striker in Frank’s pre-match press conference.

Frank had said that Tottenham were ‘finally on top’ of Muani’s dead leg and that there had been progress but the Spurs boss has now revealed that the striker will again be missing for Saturday’s clash against Leeds at Elland Road.

Argentinian international centre-back Cristian Romero, though, who missed the midweek Champions League clash due to an injury scare, will start Saturday’s contest against the Whites.

“He will not be available, he's not in the squad”

In more positive news for Spurs, Yves Bissouma and summer signing Kota Takai returned to training on Monday after injury lay-offs whilst defender Ben Davies also returned from a knee injury to make the bench as an unused substitute against Bodo/Glimt.

Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference and as quoted by The Standard, Frank said: “Kolo Muani has been on the pitch the last two days. That's very positive [but] he will not be available, he's not in the squad tomorrow. Kota is getting better and better. He's trained with the team for 10 days, so that's promising.

"Romero is fit and available and he will start tomorrow. Promising news.

“That was a contact to his foot, the medical did a good job to get him turned around. Trained and ready for tomorrow.

“Dom’s minor procedure went well. The timeframe we'll know more when we come back from the international break."

Leeds United face Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road in the final game before the October international break - but what do the club’s fans think? Here is what our YEP Jury have had to say on Saturday’s visit of Thomas Frank’s side with disagreement on the predictions front, team change suggestion and free transfer call.

MIKE GILL

Although Bournemouth’s equaliser in the dying seconds was heartbreaking, United’s performance showed clearly that they need not fear anyone at Elland Road.

The Whites are growing in confidence, and Daniel Farke has proved that he can mix it up tactically.

When a corner or dangerous free-kick is awarded nowadays, fans are not amazed when something comes from it!

The defence and central midfield have compactness about them that will prove to be a big challenge for most opponents.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is putting himself about and would have been a contender for man of the match had he converted just one of his golden chances.

And so to Spurs and our old protagonist Thomas Frank.

The Londoners sit in fourth place thanks to their three wins and two draws, including last Saturday’s draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On Tuesday night, they came back from two goals behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Bodo/Glimt, but they would have expected three points from the match.

It's never easy against top sides like Tottenham, but the Whites have nothing to fear.

With decent refereeing, the Elland Road factor, and a bit of luck, who knows?

Prediction: Leeds United 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1.

“League position is more a function of the opposition”

DAVID WATKINS

I’m finding predicting results for Leeds this season even more difficult than usual. The problem is not with Leeds, though; it’s generally with the opposition.

Once again, this weekend we are up against a team where you really don’t know what sort of performance they’ll produce!

Spurs have been as erratic as any side this season, winning at the Etihad, yet losing at home to Bournemouth the following week!

More recently, they followed a strong-looking point at Brighton with a downbeat home draw with Wolves. You don’t know what you will get with them.

On the face of it, Spurs at Elland Road is another tough proposition; the Lilywhites sit fourth with only one defeat against their name.

But other than that strange win against Manchester City, their other two league wins were against bottom-three sides, and they couldn’t beat the other one, Wolves.

I think their league position is more a function of the opposition they’ve faced than a reflection of any innate quality.

I’m going bullish this time, and hoping that their midweek trip to the Arctic Circle in the Champions League has hindered their preparations for the lunchtime trip to Elland Road; I’m predicting three points for the Mighty Whites.

Prediction: Leeds United 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0.

“In a game of small margins it could be a valid decision”

NEIL GREWER

Confidence is high around Elland Road. The team are playing well and competing at Premier League level and the supporter base recognise this. Everyone is united.

Spurs are certainly not invincible and will not relish the hot-bed atmosphere which Elland Road can generate; but they possess several “difference makers” and will be a tough nut to crack.

Leeds have modified their style of play to suit the league and the fanbase now understand why players with specific attributes were acquired.

Whilst Daniel Farke’s team selection does not satisfy all supporters, current performances and results support his decisions on the whole.

The team had been virtually picking itself, but the concession of two set-piece goals last time out may raise a question regarding the inclusion of Jaka Bijol for the extra height he possesses.

If included, Pascal Struijk would likely lose out, which would be harsh but in a game of small margins it could be a valid decision.

Noah Okafor is improving game by game and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is leading the line well, despite being a little wasteful with chances given – although the chances are being created.

Prediction: Leeds United 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2.

KEITH INGHAM

Leeds face Spurs on Saturday buoyed by a very good performance only spoiled by a late equaliser by Bournemouth.

Spurs, under new boss Thomas Frank have had a mixed bag of results. Defeat at home to Bournemouth, a win at West Ham and draws at Brighton and Wolves in recent games.

The game brings a first return in Spurs colours for Archie Gray. The youngster will hopefully receive a warm welcome when he steps out at Elland Road.

With Dan James injuring his ankle, I’d expect Daniel Farke to name the same team for the third consecutive game.

He might not be everybody’s ‘cup of tea’ but Brenden Aaronson is in the team on merit and I’d expect him to keep his place.

With James out for at least a month, it might be worth looking at the free transfer market, especially if Willy Gnonto is also out for a lengthy period. Jack Harrison is an option if needed and has performed well when coming on during games.

I’m really looking forward to the game and another draw wouldn’t be a disaster but I’d love a win.

Prediction: Leeds United 1 Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Head).

Leeds United 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Heart).

“Baffling defeats”

ANDY RHODES

Following the late draw with Bournemouth last week, Leeds United will be looking to feel more positive by the close of play this Saturday.

Spurs are, on paper at least, a tougher opponent than the team from the south coast.

However, we know that Tottenham are capable of suffering baffling defeats. They now have the added pressures of the Champions League to contend with and drew at Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday night.

Leeds, meanwhile, are fully focused on the league.

Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin showed early glimpses of their quality against Bournemouth, while Sean Longstaff looked like a real midfield leader to compliment captain Ethan Ampadu.

Leeds will need to take any chances that come their way – there might not be many of them against a top-six side.

They will also need to quickly learn from their mistakes and stay more resolute at the back, especially in the latter stages if they do find themselves in front.

Every week feels like a test in this league, but this is another that Leeds should relish.

Leeds United v Tottenham fresh injury news as new blows leave 9 out and 3 doubts but 3 men back - Yorkshire Evening Post
Description

Fresh team news has been provided for Leeds United’s Saturday lunchtime hosting of Tottenham Hotspur for which nine players are now out with three others doubtful but three men back.

Unlike Tottenham, Daniel Farke’s Whites have had a clear midweek to prepare for Saturday’s 12.30pm kick-off yet Farke’s side will still be without key men, Farke providing injury updates at Thursday afternoon’s pre-match press conference.

Spurs, though, have even worse injury troubles, and a tight turnaround to contend with after Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Bodo/Glimt in Norway. Boss Thomas Frank provided fresh team news ahead of the contest in which his side battled back from being 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw.

Here, we run through the injury news from both sides ahead of Saturday’s Premier League showdown at Elland Road in what is the final game before the October international break.
