Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was left in awe at the ‘crazy’ save that he pulled off in the closing minutes of his team’s 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

The visitors were pushing for an equaliser in the final stages of the Carabao Cup tie and must’ve thought they were about to draw level when Omar Marmoush surged into the penalty area and evaded the challenge of Alexis Mac Allister.

The Egyptian’s shot took a wicked deflection and, somehow, the Reds netminder got a strong arm to the ball to punch it away from danger, showing incredibly quick reflexes before reacting to his heroic intervention with a celebratory fist pump and roar of delight.

It proved to be an important moment, coming just five minutes before Dominik Szoboszlai settled the tie with an equally spectacular goal at the other end of the pitch, and Mamardashvili was quite satisfield with his night’s work.

He told liverpoolfc.com after the win: “[It was] a good game. I enjoyed it. I’m happy to have made the saves because I helped the team a little bit. Yeah, happy.”

On the stop from Marmoush, the Liverpool goalkeeper said: “This one, I saw [back] just now. It was really crazy. A good save. It was a really important game, a really important victory, especially at Anfield with our fans.

“I hadn’t had any opportunity to play this season, so I wanted to enjoy today and I did. Let’s see what happens next.”

Mamardashvili stepped up when Liverpool needed him

It was an eventful night for Mamardashvili, to say the least, having begun the night with an overhit pass to Milos Kerkez and later culpable of flapping at the corner kick from which Conor Gallagher pulled a goal back for Spurs in the 69th minute.

However, he produced a fine reaction save from Lucas Bergvall in the opening quarter-hour and surpassed that with his incredible stop from Marmoush, without which Liverpool’s heads may have dropped from giving up a two-goal lead.

After a testing first season at Anfield in which he kept just three clean sheets in 20 games and didn’t convince with his ball distribution, the Georgian may have felt a pressure to perform on his first appearance of this campaign.

It wasn’t a perfect display from him, but the two big saves he pulled off in the opening and closing minutes more than justified his selection by Andoni Iraola.

The 25-year-old will also have been aware of the potential threat to his position at Liverpool once Lucca Brughmans arrives from Genk next year, but he served a reminder last night of why the Reds were so eager to bring him in from Valencia.

Hopefully he can step up in a similarly convincing fashion whenever he’s called upon this term.

Jacquet puts in another strong performance for Liverpool

The Frenchman further underlined his growing reputation with a solid performance off the bench against Spurs, with his strong challenge to thwart Omar Marmoush standing out as a highlight.

As per Sofascore, he won both of his duels last night whilst also completing 20 out of 23 passes (87% success) and making three clearances and two tackles in helping Liverpool to victory.

It hasn’t taken Jacquet long to establish himself as the fixed partner to Virgil van Dijk at centre-back, and we fully expect him to come straight back into the starting XI for the Reds’ Premier League visit to Bournemouth on Sunday.

The 21-year-old might still have the occasional lapse in judgement which is all part of his development as a footballer, but in just a half-dozen appearances for his new club, he already looks like an extremely astute addition.

Steele’s description of him as a ‘Rolls-Royce in the making’ will surely be echoed by Liverpool supporters everywhere, and if the Frenchman is this good now, think of the levels he could reach in four to five years’ time!
