Arsenal will be heading into the new Premier League season full of confidence. Whilst they narrowly missed out on the title last time around, they cemented their reputation as a top team with a second successive push for the crown.

Many have now tipped Arsenal to win the Premier League this season. That will certainly be Mikel Arteta’s main objective.

Arsenal director Josh Kroenke is confident the title will be won, whilst former Aston Villa winger Gabby Agbonlahor has called Arteta’s side the favourites.

Of course, many will still have reigning champions Manchester City down as the team to beat, and whilst Liverpool are now something of an unknown quantity following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, the Reds can’t be ruled out.

As for the rest of the traditional ‘big six’, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, few would have them down as title contenders.

Former Wales international Dean Saunders has now explained why Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool are so far ahead of the rest in the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Arteta has got Arsenal, there’s no lazy players at Arsenal. There’s no lazy players at Man City. There’s no lazy players at Liverpool. That’s why they’re the top three.

“Start going down, there’s a few lazy players at Spurs. There’s a few at Man United, there’s a few at Chelsea. The Arsenal manager has got most of his lazy players out of the club.”

Mikel Arteta’s ruthlessness at Arsenal

Arteta has certainly been ruthless in his time as Arsenal boss. The Spanish coach has made big, and sometimes unpopular decisions, taking big name players out of his plans and out of the club.

The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil, and arguably even Aaron Ramsdale, thought he remains at the Emirates Stadium as a back up option, have fallen foul of the manager in this regard.

It would be harsh to call Ramsdale lazy, and perhaps the same could be said of Ozil and Aubameyang, but in each case they no longer fit the style Arteta wanted and the manager didn’t hesitate to act. In each case, his decision has ultimately been vindicated.

Arsenal have been linked with several strikers in this transfer window, including Sporting Club De Portugal star Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres was outstanding for Sporting last season, establishing himself as one of the deadliest goalscorers in Europe and leading his side to the title.

Arsenal are in the market for another forward, as they aim to add speed and extra goal threat to their front line, but Mikel Arteta may be more keen on a winger.

However, the sheer quality Gyokeres possesses, as well as his speed as a centre-forward, may make him an appealing option. There is a problem though, and Arsenal are now eyeing up a much less exciting alternative.

CaughtOffside have now reported that Arsenal have “baulked” at the price of Gyokeres, not just in terms of the fee Sporting want.

The agents’ commission and Gyokeres’ wage demands have seemingly put Arsenal off a move for the Sweden attacker.

With this in mind, Arsenal have several alternative targets they have been considering, and one is now coveted by both Arteta and Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal now consider move for Dominic Solanke

The report also revealed that Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke is now on Arteta’s radar for the summer window.

Solanke will cost around £65m, and is also being targeted by Spurs as they seek out a true replacement for Harry Kane.

The 26-year-old had failed spells at Chelsea and Liverpool earlier in his career, but thrived at Bournemouth under Andoni Iraola last season, scoring 19 Premier League goals in 38 matches.

A move for Solanke would be a surprise. At £65m, he is not a level-raising striker, and arguably would not start at centre-forward ahead of Kai Havertz.

Although he brings physicality and an aerial threat, Solanke does not solve Arsenal’s speed issue, where they need another game-breaking attacker who can offer pace in transition to reduce the reliance on Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

At 26, Solanke is coming into his prime years, but is not a long-term signing, and despite his strong campaign, there would be huge question marks over how long he can sustain his form.

Arsenal supporters have rushed to the defence of Declan Rice who was just slammed by a former Tottenham Hotspur player.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice started for England as they fell to defeat against Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin last night.

Rice was not at his best in the final, or throughout the tournament in general. The 25-year-old still performed an important function for Gareth Southgate’s side, and provided a screen to protect the back line, but his game lacked the progressive dynamism that has become the hallmark of his play under Mikel Arteta for Arsenal.

Southgate’s tactics have hindered Rice at times. However it was equally true that there were moments against Spain when the former West Ham United man lacked the conviction to be more aggressive on the ball and instead opted for more conservative, safe options.

England fans were hugely frustrated by Rice’s performance in the final, and the player himself will know that he fell short of his own high standards. His display has also drawn criticism from elsewhere.

Rafael van der Vaart did not hold back in his criticism of Rice after the final.

The former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker, speaking to Dutch media outlet NOS, as quoted by Sport Bible, said: “€100M for Declan Rice. What does he do? He comes to collect a ball only to pass it back to John Stones. He is useless. If you are truly worth €100M, then you should be able to play a ball forward.”

Arteta encouraged Rice to take up a more advanced role for Arsenal last season. This decision proved successful, as the England man delivered 7 goals and 10 assists, proving that he can make an impact at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, though, England did not see enough of that side of Rice’s game in Germany this summer. Due to a dip in form from the player himself, and the way that the Three Lions were set up and instructed to play, the Arsenal man was not able to showcase the full range of his skills.

In any case, though, van der Vaart’s assertion that Rice is in any way useless is, of course, wildly over the top.

Since the Duchman made his statement about Rice, Arsenal fans on X have been vocal in their defence of the player.

One said: “Declan Rice is not useless. Gareth doesn’t know how to use Declan Rice.”

Another claimed: “This is so not true. Declan Rice with Arsenal is at the heart of the midfield. Most players just didn’t find their rhythm playing for England. It is down to the coach. Look at Foden . I couldn’t believe that was the same Foden of Man city.”

One stated: “This is just his Spurs affiliation talk if he never joined spurs he won’t be talking.”

Another supporter added: “More forwards passes than any other England player. Meanwhile Foden has more passes to Pickford than Kane.”

Arsenal have now joined Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Liverpool in the race to sign one Premier League star.

Signing a midfielder to complement Declan Rice is now a priority for Arsenal this summer. The Gunners certainly lack depth in this part of the pitch. According to journalist Rudy Galetti, reporting on X, Arsenal have “shown interest” in signing Wolves ace Joao Gomes, along with top flight rivals Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Midlands outfit are “open to letting him go” this summer, on the proviso that they receive a “suitable bid” for the 23-year-old.

The 8-cap Brazil international was a key player for Wolves last season, as he featured 38 times across all competitions. He impressed Wolves manager Gary O’Neil too, being described as “fantastic” by the coach after netting a brace against Tottenham Hotspur, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Gomes would represent an exciting addition to Arteta’s squad, as he boasts plenty of potential, and has already shown that he can impress in the Premier League. However, there is an argument that he would not necessarily take Arsenal to the next level.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has revealed who he believes is faster between himself and Arsenal attacker Bukayo Saka.

The Dutch international joined Spurs last summer, with Van de Ven quickly becoming a fan favourite in the white half of north London for his defensive performances alongside Cristian Romero, with the youngster winning plaudits for his speed.

Van de Ven said: “As a substitute you can be a permanent asset. The role I now have is a substitute. I know Saka from Arsenal. It is up to the national coach whether I start. Who’s faster? Saka or me? If you look at the data, you already know the answer.”

“Staying in the Premiership was important to me. I was very keen to stay in the Premiership. Sven Goran Eriksson, the England coach, is here and the majority of games he sees are here in England.

“It was a big decision. I could have earned more money by going abroad but I felt this was the place to be.”

Campbell went on to become an Arsenal legend, winning two Premier League titles, including the Invincible triumph which was confirmed at his old ground, and is the only player to have scored in a Champions League final for the club.

Wenger had delivered a statement about the rivalry in North London with the signing of the Tottenham Hotspur captain, which is still remembered fondly by Arsenal fans to this day.

Arsenal have been linked with several midfielders and fullbacks in this transfer window, but a surprise option has emerged.

Mikel Arteta is keen to add to his options in the middle of the park, with Thomas Partey and Emile Smith Rowe linked with moves away.

Given the interest in him, and Leeds’ desire to keep hold of their outstanding young talent, they have slapped a £30m asking price on the 18-year-old, and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be willing to pay such a fee.

Gray predominantly played at right-back this season, whilst also featuring in a defensive midfield position.

It seems unlikely that he would start in either position should he join this summer, but perhaps he is being eyed up as a talent who can develop into a top-class player under Arteta.

Former England goalkeeper David James recently told the Yorkshire Evening Post that the Championship Young Player of the Year is following a similar path to Manchester City star John Stones, who made the step up from Barnsley to Everton before joining Pep Guardiola’s side, and has played in both defence and midfield.

“As we’ve seen in Premier League footballers, as we’ve seen in international football, if you’ve got that versatility [you can succeed],” James stated of Gray.

“John Stones is probably the best example at the moment as a senior player, and Archie Gray is following that mould. He’s been fantastic for Leeds this season and hopefully for him, his future is in a senior England squad playing in one of many different positions.”

Gray’s versatility may make him appealing to Arteta, but given his price and the fact that he is unlikely to be an immediate starter, it would be something of a surprise to see him join.

If Gray has offers from elsewhere, such as Spurs, where it would be easier for him to break into the side, immediate first-team action may be more appealing to him, but the prospect of joining a title-challenging side may also outweigh this for the teenager.

Arsenal may look to strengthen their options at left-back, and watchers of Euro 2024 will have been impressed by one player in particular.

With Arsenal defenders Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney all disappointing at the tournament, Mikel Arteta may prioritise the addition of a top-quality left-back who can cement himself into the starting XI.

Whilst the Arsenal trio struggled, Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori has thrived for Italy, and the 22-year-old is now attracting interest as a result of his strong performances across the season for club and country.

Bologna, who qualified for the Champions League, were adamant that they would not sell the defender, but their position has now changed, in a welcome boost for Arsenal.

In this week’s episode, Will Jones and Rahul Lakhani discussed England’s recent poor performances at the European Championships. With Arsenal players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka receiving mixed reviews for England so far, Gareth Southgate’s tactical decisions were questioned.

Arsenal are seeking a goalkeeper in the likely event that Aaron Ramsdale departs the club this summer, and they may have found their ideal replacement.

Ramsdale is set to leave in search of first-team action after losing his Arsenal place to David Raya, and Mikel Arteta will need to replace him with another backup.

Spanish journalist Gerard Romero claimed on a La Grada Online stream that Garcia is to become an Arsenal player.

“Joan Garcia, Espanyol goalkeeper, future of Arsenal,” he stated when the goalkeeper’s place in the Olympic squad was announced.

Spanish outlet AS have also claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in the running for the goalkeeper, who saw his release clause increase to around £21m after Espanyol were promoted back to the top flight.

Until March, Garcia was Espanyol’s second choice option behind veteran Fernando Pacheco. However, he since took his place, and impressed between the sticks as his side reached the playoff places and secured their return to the top flight.

With 12 clean sheets and just 10 goals conceded in 21 games across all competitions this season, Garcia’s record is impressive, and he was described as “very talented” by legendary Espanyol goalkeeper Thomas N’Kono.

At 1.91m tall, Garcia would provide a lot of height to Arsenal’s goalkeeping roster, which David Raya perhaps lacks, but it remains to be seen whether his release clause of £21m will be met given his lack of experience at the top level.

It appears that Arsenal and Tottenham both see him as an ideal backup keeper for next season, but Arteta may have the upper hand in the race to sign him.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has delivered his verdict on one player’s decision to reject Arsenal.

The rivalry between Spurs and Arsenal is one of the fiercest in English football. The two sets of fans just don’t like each other and that was evident in the penultimate game of the 2023/24 season.

Tottenham fans were happy to lose to Manchester City just so that Arsenal wouldn’t win the Premier League title.

Such is the rivalry between the two clubs, and Postecoglou appeared to have made his allegiances clear with a comment on a player who was one of Arsenal’s key targets in this summer’s transfer window.

Benjamin Sesko was Arsenal’s top trasfer target before Euro 2024 began.

The Slovenia international was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates. Arsenal really wanted to sign Sesko, and a move even looked likely at one point.

However, after a lot of deliberation, Sesko decided to snub Arsenal and signed a new contract at RB Leipzig. That was a blow to Mikel Arteta and Edu, who were ready to trigger his £55 million release clause.

Arsenal have moved on now, but ahead of England’s game against Slovenia on ITV on Tuesday night, Postecoglou delivered his verdict on Sesko’s decision to stay at RB Leipzig. The Spurs boss thinks it was a ‘smart move’.

“I think a big club would have looked at him this year, and it’s a smart move for him to stay there for another year,” Postecoglou said. “I think there’s still some development in him, but really good attributes for a striker position, for sure.”

Presenter Mark Pougatch then asked the Spurs boss: “Is that the Tottenham manager saying it’s a smart move not to go to Arsenal?”

“No comment, mate,” replied Postecoglou as Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Gary Neville around him burst out laughing.

Why Sesko rejected Arsenal and how Gunners reacted to the snub

Sesko would’ve been a great addition to this Arsenal squad.

The RB Leipzig star is quick, strong, good in the air and is a lethal finisher. He has all the attributes you would want from a striker, which is probably why Arteta and Edu were so keen to sign him.

However, Sesko rejected Arsenal, and one of the reasons was because the Gunners made it clear to him that he would only be a number two to Kai Havertz.

As for how Arteta and Edu took the rejection, it was claimed that ‘the signing of a striker is not believed to be the be-all and end-all’ for the decision-makers at Arsenal. They weren’t too disappointed.

Arsenal have moved on for now, but it will be interesting to see if Arteta and Edu will go back in for Sesko in the summer of 2025.
