Spurs edge Palace 2-0

Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to make it a third consecutive Premier League win after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off in the 13th minute for an ill-judged lunge at Micky van de Ven. Archie Gray scored for Spurs in the 25th minute, heading a corner from Mohammed Kudus into the far post, and Jan Paul van Hecke sealed the victory in the 73rd minute. Roberto De Zerbi’s side built on a platform established by their first league win of the season at home to Coventry City and then fortified it with their outstanding victory at Chelsea.

Spurs had 34 shots and faced just two, while Tottenham also recorded 79.4% possession in the match. De Zerbi said, "The passion we showed - we didn't lose the focus, the concentration."

Mateta red reshapes match

Jean-Philippe Mateta received a straight red card after only 13 minutes, after the Video Assistant Referee intervention upgraded the initial yellow to a straight red. Mohammed Kudus missed a chance from close range after a pass from Luca Williams-Barnett, and the Spurs then continued to press as Crystal Palace played with a numerical disadvantage. Tottenham registered 34 shots, and it described the 32-shot gap as the biggest shot difference they have had against any opponent since Opta records began in 2003-04.

Goal said the referee Michael Oliver initially showed a yellow card, but VAR review made the red card outcome clear once he was asked to review the footage. Goal quoted the match narrative as Mateta’s expulsion leaving Crystal Palace at ten, and it framed the red as coming after Mateta’s studs touched the back of the Tottenham defender’s heel.

De Zerbi, Sage under pressure

Tottenham temporarily rose to eighth place after the win, while Crystal Palace slid to 18th place in the relegation zone after their third straight Premier League defeat.

Pierre Sage’s team will host Liverpool on Sunday, November 8, as the match result left Sage facing increasing scrutiny after Crystal Palace fell into the bottom three.

Spurs moved into the top half of the table, and it noted that the last time Tottenham recorded three straight league wins was in February 2025.

Crystal Palace have lost more matches (15) and conceded more goals (52) than any other side to have played the full Premier League in 2026.

De Zerbi said, "Three games in a row is not enough. We have to keep this behaviour, this spirit."
