Five Observations from Bayern Munich’s 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Telekom Cup - Bavarian Football Works
Description

Bayern Munich faced Tottenham Hotspur in the pre-season Telekom Cup and walked out with a convincing 4-0 win. Here are a few observations from the game.

The scoreline does not tell the whole story…

A 4-0 win is convincing enough, but not when the game had a lot more going. The finishing troubles continue to haunt Bayern this season too, as players like Harry Kane and Leon Goretzka failed to score even from very simple and uncomplicated situations. Michael Olise, too, missed a clear tap-in in an instance and this was pretty much the theme of the first half. The attacking chances were phenomenal, the team interacted incredibly well and pressed incredibly well, and yet the result was not what it could have been.

In what was very atypical of Harry Kane, he missed a penalty. Let that sink in. Kane, a seasoned striker, slipped, got a double touch and missed a penalty. He had multiple misses throughout his time on the pitch. Additionally, he was positioned very bizarrely for a striker, often found dropping much deeper than the wingers, in almost a position between left wing and attacking midfield. Following last season’s finishing woes, it seems like Kane did not receive the memo on staying closer to the net.

Yes, Tottenham were extremely poor at their job; they crumbled with the press and had barely anything going on. They did not even remotely deny or sabotage Bayern’s chances – but Bayern was more than capable of doing it for themselves.

However, in the second half Kompany turned it over to the youth… which is a topic for later.

It was always you.

In the current circumstance where Bayern has virtually no depth in wings and is reliant on Serge Gnabry or Kingsley Coman, Luis Díaz is the single most important purchase the club could have made this season. Díaz had nothing short of a magical game – he was aggressive, smart, and gelled with the team extremely well.

His passing was quick, accurate and effective and his dribbling certainly catches the eye. Thankfully, he is not just another all-skills-no-output winger, but someone with the game intelligence and the timing sense needed to thrive at Bayern. His presence has single-handedly bolstered the attack, especially in the final third.

Is it too late now to say sorry?

There are people at Bayern to whom I owe long-due apologies and Leon Goretzka and Vincent Kompany are among them.

Goretzka first.

He had an amazing game. He was decisive, smart and handled the opponents with ease. Granted, he missed several major and easy chances. However, the improvement from an error-prone and easily overrun Goretzka to this new version of him, who seems a lot more composed, is more than enough for now.

Kompany, man. While he has received his share of deserved criticism, he seems to have turned a new leaf. The system, mostly unchanged, now looks full of players who are willing to, and are capable of handing an above-average performance every week. The signings have certainly done the Belgian a huge favour – Jonathan Tah was fantastic and Tom Bischoff too had an amazing game. However, what has really changed is his attitude towards youngsters. Choosing to sub in nearly every second team player he had on hand for the second half was not just bold, but also a decision that proved to be the best later on.

I also owe an apology to Sacha Boey – for he was not bad at all in his second half stint.

The kids aren’t alright…

They’re phenomenal.

Witnessing a phenomenal performance from a second team player is amazing enough on its own. However, against a team like Spurs, and when every youngster puts in a terrific performance, it is truly out of a dream.

From the terrific goals from Jonah Kusi-Asare and Lennart Karl, to the assists from Paul Wanner and Santos, and the performances from midfield and defense (Cassiano Kiala!), everything about these youngsters was incredible. It hardly felt like they were inexperienced kids – they did make a few errors as they tried to navigate their way through, but managed to put up a good fight, with their foot on the gas the whole time.

One can only pray that Kompany decides to let them play more often. If they can completely shut down Europa champions Tottenham Hotspur, they can be at least half-decent against Bundesliga teams.

Only know you love her when you let her go…

But not really.

It was disheartening to watch João Palhinha and Mathys Tel play like shadows of their former selves. Palhinha had a particularly bad game, and was responsible for conceding the penalty. He was constantly overrun by attackers and simply could not handle the situation. Tel, though he is an incredibly promising player, had a forgettable game too. While we cannot immediately jump to conclusions from one preseason friendly, it certainly makes it a lot easier to accept Tel being sold.

Why did Tottenham Hotspur shortlist and sign Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha? - Bavarian Football Works
Description

João Palhinha has had a tough period at Bayern Munich. Playing second fiddle to a midfielder that basically the entire fanbase wanted out of the club for a good few years and a coach seemingly too stubborn to give him a chance to shine were the two stumbling blocks at Bayern, so the 30-year-old Portuguese will ply his trade for the season at Tottenham Hotspur. Coach Thomas Frank is excited to play with him, just not in the way you just thought of right now.

”It was always his abilities, and if you look at the squad, I don’t think we have his ability or package as a clear number six with his profile”, Frank told Football London (via Hotspur HQ). Spurs’ other midfielders were either too young or not consistent enough, so the Danish tactician hoped that the former Fulham man would give them a boost especially in Europe.

Manchester United found no way through Tottenham’s midfield of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pape Matar Sarr during last season’s Europa League final, so it was thought that defensive stability in the middle was needed before anything.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur has made it official — Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha is headed to London for a season-long loan:

We are delighted to announce the signing of João Palhinha on loan from FC Bayern, subject to international clearance and work permit.

The 30-year-old Portugal international joins the Club on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season with an option to make the move permanent next summer.

Tottenham Hotspur also released the announcement on its social media channels:

Bayern Munich also acknowledged the move:

Palhinha’s tenure in Bavaria lasted just over a year and really never made any sense since the club had no plan for how to use him. That said, Palhinha did not exactly go out and win a job, ether. Hopefully, this move back to England will rejuvenate the defensive midfielder’s career.

Check out what we have in store for the latest edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show:

Bayern Munich got off to a good start for the 2025/26 season, so let’s unpack how we’re feeling about there things stand and how they look.

Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha’s loan to Tottenham Hotspur works for all parties - Bavarian Football Works
Description

According to a report from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), the full details of what exactly Tottenham Hotspur will pay for João Palhinha’s have been revealed. It is a deal that is very advantageous for Bayern Munich, especially as the club seeks to lower its salary budget:

João Palhinha’s exact Bayern salary, to be paid in full by Tottenham, is worth €8.1m fixed, rising to €8.6m through performance based add-ons. There are also title bonuses that could increase it to around €10m gross per year in total.

This is a deal that works equally well for Bayern Munich, Palhinha, and Tottenham Hotspur. The best case scenario is that the Portuguese midfielder goes to London, gets an opportunity to play, takes advantage of it, and the three parties work together on a full transfer at this time next year.

Die Folgen: Bayern’s 2-1 win over Lyon (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich pulled out a 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyon at the Allianz Arena on Saturday in a match that represented a solid start to the 2025/26 campaign for the Bavarians.

There was much to discuss, so let’s get to it. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

As always, let’s begin with the starting XI:

This was a great way to start the preseason for Vincent Kompany even if the initial XI did not score. It was a pleasure to see some young players like Lennart Karl and Paul Wanner integrated in with the veterans. The head coach was on-point with how he handled and also with using Cassiano Kiala, David Daiber, and Jonah Kusi-Asare in the second half.

João Palhinha was not included in the game day roster because of the ongoing contract talks with Tottenham Hotspur.

Each of the youngsters had solid moments, mixed in with some opportunities to learn. In short, they were excited and exciting, but all need some work.

Speaking of Karl, he had a great opportunity in the 11th minute on a volley, but his rocket of a shot went wide. The kid does have a knock for making things happen.

The big news of the day was that Aleksandar Pavlović suffered a broken orbital bone in training. It is unclear how exactly Pavich suffered the break, but his injury has now opened the door for players like Tom Bischof and Leon Goretzka to make an impact for the next month. Against Lyon, both showed that they are worthy of a chance to start.

Wanner and Karl each bring a bold, fast style of play. It’s almost electric when they get the ball on their foot because they are always looking to attack and looking to create chaos.

Early in the second half Luis Díaz tried to take advantage of the home crowd, acceptance in adoration and almost scored, except for a great save by the Lyon goalkeeper Rémy Descamps.

In the 51st minute, Joshua Kimmich whipped in a ball into the box toward Díaz, who was hauled down. A penalty was awarded and Michael Olise was given the PK. Olise calmly stepped to the spot and drilled his attempt to make it 1-0.

Olise was not done there, though, as nine minutes later Jonathan Tah made a strong tackle, which led to the ball eventually landing on the foot of Serge Gnabry, who fed Olise for his second goal. Olise is clearly in midseason form already.

In the 67th minute, Diaz had another great chance but again was denied. Clearly, Díaz was bringing some electricity to the lineup but just could not finish on this day.

Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez would cut the lead to 2-1 in the 83rd minute, but it was too little, too late.

In extra time, former Manchester United star Nemanja Matić took a swipe at Kimmich’s face and was hit with a yellow card.

Evern without scoring Díaz brought something to the table, which is a good sign after only a few days with the club.

Overall, Bayern Munich looked good...not great. It was a very positive game that accomplished a lot of different things, including shaking the rust off for veterans and giving the kids a chance to play with the older players. All-in-all, it was a good performance and should start to give the Bayern Munich front office an idea of where each of those youngster are in their developmental journey. Inevitably, some will get loaned away, but most seem likely to stay. While a 2-1 victory over a solid (not great) French side like Lyon might not seem like much, every season has to start somewhere...and 2025/26 took a good first step with the victory over Lyon.

Wanner could get his chance (Kicker’s Mario Krischel)

In a piece centered on Bayern Munich’s young players, Kicker journalist Mario Krischel spoke to board member for sport Max Eberl and it sure sounds like Paul Wanner could get a chance to fill in for Jamal Musiala:

One of them could be Paul Wanner, who made his FCB debut under Julian Nagelsmann three and a half years ago and was most recently loaned to Elversberg and Heidenheim. This week, the still only 19-year-old also reported back to Säbener Straße and could even make his mark for the first time due to Jamal Musiala’s long-term absence. “Paul Wanner has a huge opportunity in the coming weeks and hopefully months,” says Eberl. “Now he has a big step ahead of him to break into this team at Bayern Munich.”

Is that really true? According to information from kicker, Wanner still wants to play regularly and have a fair chance of a starting place. Not just as a temporary replacement for Musiala. Especially since numerous Bundesliga clubs have expressed interest. “That’s nice because it shows that his development is heading exactly where we want it to,” says Eberl. “That he’ll eventually play his role at FC Bayern. Paul has that opportunity now, and he should take advantage of it. As of today, I don’t know why he’s not with us beyond September 1st.”

Wanner had some positive moments against Olympique Lyon, but still needs a lot of work. Is he ready for prime time?

Chiesa out next at LFC? (Calciomercato via ESPN)

Italian attacker Federico Chiesa could be the next player out at Liverpool FC:

Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa, 27, is of interest to Fenerbahce, but he wants to return to Serie A.

Tottenham Hotspur could be ready to pay €52 million for João Palhinha.

Chelsea getting close with Simons (Nicolo Schira via ESPN)

Chelsea might be able to see the finish line on its prospective move with RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons:

Chelsea’s pursuit of RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons is at the “final stage.” Personal terms already have been agreed over a long-term contract and a deal worth more than €65m.

Real could make move for Saliba or Konaté (ESPN)

Real Madrid is keeping its eyes on Arsenal FC’s William Saliba and Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté:

Real Madrid would “seriously consider” the signings of William Saliba or Ibrahima Konaté if the defenders became available, Diario AS reports, with the Liverpool player being the most likely option. Madrid are waiting to see what stance Liverpool take on Konaté, the newspaper claims — with just a year left on the centre-back’s contract, and Konaté keen on a move to the Bernabéu — while Saliba’s situation is “more complicated” as his Arsenal contract runs until 2027.

Description

July 31st, 2025 — 4:20PM EDT: Romano provides more detail on move

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano had more details on the prospective move:

⚪️ Tottenham have agreed personal terms with João Palhinha and are in advanced talks with Bayern.

Initial loan for Palhinha… and understand the agreement will also include a , not mandatory.

Spurs will cover his salary, deal at final stages.

According to a report from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha is on the ‘verge’ of joining Tottenham Hotspur on a loan assignment:

⚪️ EXCL | Joao #Palhinha is on the verge of joining Tottenham Hotspur on loan. Negotiations are very advanced.

Only final details remain between Palhinha and Tottenham. An agreement between FC Bayern and Tottenham is almost complete.

Contract with Bayern remains valid until 2028.

@SkySportDE

Specific details have not leaked, but the key parts of the deal would likely have to do with the following:

Who absorbs Palhinha’s salary this season? Likely Spurs.

What loan fee will there be? Likely something nominal.

Will there be an obligation to buy? This seems possible, but not a certainty.

In the end, this deal could end up being a way for Bayern Munich to get Palhinha’s salary off its books for this season and allow him to audition for Tottenham in hopes of landing a full-time gig in London à la Mathys Tel.

The Bavarians finalized the much-anticipated signing of Luis Díaz from Liverpool FC to give the team a new look at left-wing? Will the 28-year-old get an early starting nod or will Vincent Kompany hold him out a bit longer? Tottenham Hotspur hot on the heels of Bayern Munich’s João Palhinha - Bavarian Football Works
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are keen on acquiring Bayern Munich’s João Palhinha. This move has gained steam per latest reports divulging the start of negotiations between the two clubs.

Bayern’s expectations

Despite having bought Palhinha from Fulham FC for €51 million in the winter transfer last year, the Bavarians do not have high demands. Per a report by Bild ( as captured by @iMianSanMia), Die Roten would be willing to sell the midfielder in the ballpark of €25-30 million.

Spurs have begun negotiations with Bayern

Tottenham are in talks with Bayern to get Palhinha on loan as reported by the Athletic’s Jay Harris and Seb Stafford-Bloor. While the favored option is to obtain the defensive midfielder on loan, a permanent move is not yet ruled out. Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur who currently man the no.6 role at White Hart Lane are in the final year of their contracts. Spurs see Palhinha as a perfect fit for that position.

Prospect of the Champions League

As far as what the player wants, Palhinha’s initial position was to stay and prove himself in Munich. However, he is willing to change his mind should an offer from a top club arrive. As reported previously, in case of a sale, the Premier league is the preferred destination for the player. With the Spurs offering Champions League football in addition to the PL, it makes this transfer prospect quite convincing for the 30 year-old.

Per Times Sport journalist Peter Rutzler (via @iMiaSanMia), Palhinha is “keen” on the move.

The Bavarians finalized the much-anticipated signing of Luis Díaz from Liverpool FC to give the team a new look at left-wing? Will the 28-year-old get an early starting nod or will Vincent Kompany hold him out a bit longer? That will be just one of the key decisions made for the match against Olympique Lyon at the Allianz Arena. Daily Schmankerl: Bayern Munich turns focus to Nick Woltemade; Tottenham Hotspur has ‘genuine interest’ in Bayern’s João Palhinha; Is Liverpool getting Alexander Isak next?; PSG to lose Gianluigi Donnarumma; and MORE! - Bavarian Football Works
Description

Bayern’s focus now shifts to Woltemade (Sky Germany’s Kerry Hau)

With its pursuit of Liverpool FC winger Luis Diaz now nearing completion, Bayern Munich will turns its attention to VfB Stuttgart attacker Nick Woltemade:

New left winger found: Luis Díaz is moving to FC Bayern! Final details between the clubs still need to be clarified, but the deal is set to be officially completed next week. Furthermore, FCB ideally wants to sign another attacking player by September 1 – Nick Woltemade remains the top candidate. @SkySportDE

While Diaz was a transfer for the here-and-now, there is a longer play for Woltemade. Sure, Woltemade would have an important role this season, but an acquisition of the attacker is a much more important proposition for the future.

PSG preparing to lose Donnarumma? (ESPN)

Paris Saint-Germain is having some trouble reaching an agreement with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on a new contract:

Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to let goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma leave this summer, according to L’Equipe. The 26-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes, and the club’s hierarchy are keen to ensure they avoid another Kylian Mbappé situation after he joined Real Madrid on a free transfer last year. Donnarumma has turned down multiple offers from PSG to sign a new deal, with recent reports linking him to clubs in the Serie A as well as Chelsea and Manchester City.

Per Fabrizio Romano, PSG is closing in on a deal with Lille for goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who could serve as a replacement for Donarumma :

Paris Saint-Germain have agreed personal terms with Lucas Chevalier.

Talks ongoing with Lille as request starts from €40m, as L’Équipe reported.

PSG start moving as they still can not agree new deal with Gigio Donnarumma.

If you remember, just a couple of weeks ago there were some very loose rumors linking Bayern Munich to Donnarumma. Those still appear to be loose, but it is worth tucking away to re-explore at a later date.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Flagship Show: Season 8, Episode 1 (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich will have Luis Diaz in tow for this season, but that move is not the only one in motion. After allegedly getting that deal done, Bayern Munich can now expedite its plans for the rest of the transfer window, so let’s talk about it. This is what have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show:

News is breaking and everything looks to be in order for Bayern Munich’s acquisition of Liverpool FC star Luis Diaz. It’s happening and now we can start to react to how this will all work.

Now, Bayern Munich is going to press hard for VfB Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade.

Is Benjamin Šeško a possibility for Bayern Munich?

So ends the tenure of Bryan Zaragoza.

Gianluigi Donnarumma could leave PSG...will Bayern Munich activate its interest?

In a turn of events, Thomas Müller is reportedly going to spurn LAFC in favor of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Jamal Musiala is embracing the grind of his comeback, but it is too much, too soon?

Spurs want Palhinha (Fabrizio Romano)

Things could start heating up quickly between Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich for midfielder João Palhinha.

Following Sunday’s edition of the Daily Schmankerl, this transfer situation could get very serious shortly:

⚪️ Tottenham have genuine interest in João Palhinha as initial approach has been made with his camp.

More will follow in the next weeks as there’s no formal proposal to Bayern yet.

Al Nassr might have succeeded in landing Félix (Fabrizio Romano)

One of the great footballing Ponzi schemes of all time — João Félix — has his next victim club:

EXCLUSIVE: Al Nassr agree deal to sign João Félix from Chelsea, here we go!

Player authorized to fly for medical and join Al Nassr, initial transfer fee worth €30m plus add-ons and heavy sell-on clause to meet Chelsea €50m valuation in future.

Paperwork being prepared.

Contrary to what it might read like, there is no hatred toward Félix, but in a lot of ways he is what is wrong with the modern transfer market. At 25-years-old, he could get better, but he also just kind of is what he is at this point. Basically, his performances lack substance, yet clubs continue to think they will have the answer to unlock his skill and talent.

Taking the money grab move to the Middle East will not help the perception that seems to be growing that he is a fraud.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 53 (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich’s summer action is heating up after a lull and a move or two could be on the horizon. Let’s catch up on all of it on this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:

€75 million might be Bayern’s magic number for Liverpool’s Luis Diaz — and we think we finally know why we have been feeling so iffy about the situation.

Bayern made its last bid on Nick Woltemade, which could still fall short of the mark. If that fails...who’s next? Maybe of three Red Bull-related players.

Are we headed into an era of stability at Bayern Munich? Despite rumors of disconnect, there could be a pathway forward to structure.

Isak to Al Hilal? Not if LFC has something to say about it (ESPN)

Al Hilal wants Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak and is prepared to offer him a massive salary:

Al Hilal have offered Alexander Isak a tax-free wage of £600,000 ($807,000) a week in an effort to sign the Newcastle United striker, according to The Guardian. There would be further lucrative bonuses included if he wins the Saudi Pro League or AFC Champions League, and if he is top scorer. Sources have told ESPN that the 25-year-old is open to leaving Newcastle, with Liverpool the front-runners to sign him if he becomes available. However, even the Premier League champions would not be able to match Al Hilal’s financial offer, while it is also unclear whether they could meet the £120m transfer fee that Newcastle would want.

GiveMeSport captured Fabrizio Romano’s report on a potential move to Liverpool for Isak.

“I can confirm that the decision has been made on player side. Alexander Isaac wants to leave Newcastle this summer. The player has been clear with the club this week, after having several conversations with his agents to make a final decision on his future. Now, Alexandria is very clear,” said Romano. “He wants to go. First point, he feels that now there is a really important club like Liverpool competing to win every single title next season with a fantastic squad, offering the opportunity to put important money on the table.”

As it stands, one thing is certain — Isak probably will not be with Newcastle:

Gunners eyeing Eze (ESPN)

Now that Arsenal FC has secured a deal for Viktor Gyökeres, the Gunners will turn their attention to Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze:

Arsenal are ramping up their efforts to sign Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze, reports The Independent. The Gunners aim to swiftly secure him once the deal for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres has been completed. The Gunners are Eze’s top choice and they are hoping to agree to a £60m fee rather than meeting the 27-year-old’s £68m release clause. There hasn’t yet been any formal contact, but both sides will be flexible because of their positive relationship.

Report: Tottenham Hotspur preparing bid for Bayern Munich’s João Palhinha - Bavarian Football Works
Description

Bayern Munich are undergoing a major reshuffle in this transfer window. Of the players rumored to leave the Allianz Arena is João Palhinha. Tottenham Hotspur from the Premier League are reportedly interested to onboard the Portuguese international and are working in that direction.

Is it the right time to sell ?

The central midfielder was brought in last season for a hefty sum of €51 million from Fulham FC. Per a report by Kicker’s Frank Linkesch (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), should he be sold, the Premier League is the preferred destination for Palhinha. The report also indicates a transfer price of half the cost paid to acquire him!

After just one full season since his arrival, Bayern could lose more than half the investment made in the CDM position. Considering the lengthy lay-offs due to injuries, the player’s perceived value has also gone down as a result. Bayern are therefore left in a dilemma. Either give the 30 year-old Palhinha another season to prove himself or let his value drop further by the next summer.

Spurs readying an offer

Per The Telegraph’s Sam Dean and Mike McGrath, Tottenham Hotspur are interested to acquire João Palhinha. This transfer has a high likelihood of going through as the player looks to head back to the Premier League. And so, the right offer from Spurs could quickly turn this report into reality.

The question then remains, should Bayern cut their losses or take a chance and redeem their investment by keeping Palhinha ?
