Tottenham Hotspur U18 2 - 2 Under 18 - Match Report - Arsenal.com
Description

Our under-18s left with a hard-fought point after a 2-2 draw to Tottenham Hotspur in the U18 Premier League South on Saturday.

In the match at Tottenham Hotspur Academy Spurs Lodge, Cedeach O'Neill put us ahead early on before a Luca Williams-Barnett free-kick levelled the score ahead of the break.

Williams-Barnett put his side ahead from the spot until Teshaun Murisa got us back into the contest and ultimately earned us a point in a feisty affair that saw players from both sides receive red cards.

What Happened

We were quick off the whistle, and six minutes were all it took to strike first in the north London derby. Ife Ibrahim, one of a handful of under-21s regulars in the squad, won the ball deep in Spurs' half and found O'Neill in the perfect position to slot home to the bottom right of Dylan Thompson's net.

With our foot firm on the gas, Brando Bailey-Joseph was next to have a go, after he brushed off Tye Hall and unleashed a drive from distance, but the goalkeeper caught the effort.

We came close to a second when Bailey-Joseph broke Spurs' line to pick out Josh Ogunnaike down the left flank. He laid a timely cross into the centre of the box, but O'Neill was unable to steady and mishit his strike.

Missed chances allowed Tottenham to grow into the game, and they were level on 37 minutes through Williams-Barnett, who placed a clever free-kick under our defensive wall and into the bottom left of Jack Porter's goal.

We were behind immediately after the interval, when Oliver Boast was brought down inside our box. Williams-Barnett stepped up for his second of the game and sent Porter the wrong way, with an effort placed low and left.

We found a quick response, though, when the ball was cleared only to the edge of Tottenham's box and was picked up by Murisa, who fired the ball back goalwards, which was helped on by a deflection to wrong-foot Thompson and balance the tie at 2-2.

Derbies often provide heated moments, and both sides were down to ten players when Marli Salmon and George Feeney both saw red after tensions had flared between the pair.

With the game stretched, chances came at both ends, as Hall saw an effort smash off the crossbar, before substitute Louis Zecevic John watched his left-footed shot curl wide of the post.

Heavy rain created a slippery surface, and Josh King was sent off for his second bookable offence after he caught Armend Muslika, which saw us down to nine in stoppage time. The Spurs substitute then hit the upright with the last kick of the game, but the points were fairly shared at full-time.

Kick-off at the Sobha Reality Training Centre is at 11am (UK time).

Arsenal Analysed: 5 ways we secured derby delight

Arsenal Analysed: 5 ways we secured derby delight | Analysis | News - Arsenal.com
Description

We went six points clear at the top of the Premier League table with Sunday's 4-1 win at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Leandro Trossard's opener, followed by an Eberechi Eze hat-trick led to derby day delight at Emirates Stadiu, but what were the other factors that led us to yet another victory?

Adrian Clarke has rewatched the action and dipped into the stats to highlight some of the standout moments and displays:

TWIN FALSE NINES RAN AMOK

As a way of causing unexpected problems for Tottenham Hotspur’s three central defenders, we used Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino as a pair of twin false nines.

In essence our shape was often 4-4-2-0 with those two central attackers regularly occupying pockets of space between the visitors’ rearguard and central midfield.

Merino was outstanding on and off the ball, making some tremendous angles to link play.

Hat trick hero Eze played higher and more central than he usually does, and this pass and shots chalkboard from our No.10 (below) shows this clearly.

It is the type of map you would often associate with a striker…

In general play we would see those two players deliberating staying between the lines, and this asked questions of Thomas Frank’s defenders, who were not sure whether to jump into midfield or retain their positions.

For the opening goal, Micky van de Ven was drawn into midfield (circled) by Declan Rice, and this left a 3v3 on the other side of the pitch that we exploited well.

Making sure they didn’t get too high, too early, Merino and Eze were hard to mark.

Merino received that square pass, and with Tottenham Hotspur’s back line a touch disjointed, he picked out a gorgeous ball for Leo Trossard’s supremely intelligent, angled run.

Our brilliant Belgian controlled and finished with trademark aplomb to seal a terrific 20-pass move.

Playing with two false nines caused a world of issues for our north London neighbours.

DRAWING SPURS LEFT

The most important part of our game plan was to draw numerous Spurs players towards our right wing before squaring the ball inside for star man Eze.

We slanted heavily in that direction deliberately, getting Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber onto the ball as often as possible.

Mikel Merino often pulled that way to help link attacks too.

Arsenal flank attacks

From those areas we saw Saka, Timber and Merino attract the attention of one or both central midfielders, and others, and this freed up lots of room for others on the inside.

A fine example was Eze’s delicious scoop pass for Declan Rice to volley early in the contest.

See below how many white shirts are drawn right, with Eze free in acres of space to produce his bit of magic.

Eze’s second strike just after half-time came from Timber cutting infield from a congested right side.

His touch infield opened up the pitch nicely, but to get Eze free from Cristian Romero, we still needed Rice to make a darting run down that channel. (see below)

Romero went with Rice, so when the ball ricocheted back to Timber, the right back saw Eze unmarked around the D, and from there he curled home a beauty.

Rice’s unselfish run created the chaos, which freed up his England teammate.

FULL OF RUNNING

Right from the word go, the Gunners were strong, forceful and incredibly athletic.

Facing a low block, they had to create their own energy and that came very naturally to a group of pumped-up players, who were determined to win the bragging rights.

All over the pitch our movement caused Spurs nightmares, and the forward nature of those runs added great penetration.

Overall, we ran 112.2km, which was a stunning 8.6km further than Tottenham Hotspur, who managed to cover only 103.5km.

It was the fifth largest difference seen in a top-flight match this term.

Our players made things happen with their desire to run exceptionally hard.

AN ACCOMPLISHED DEBUT

Piero Hincapie made his first Premier League start in the north London derby, and the Ecuadorian made it look remarkably easy.

Gabriel Maghalaes’ absence left Mikel Arteta with several selection options, but he was confident in Hincapie, and that faith was rewarded.

He was aggressive throughout, but always controlled, and the left footer provided us with a lovely balance in that position too.

Spurs recorded an XG of just 0.07, the lowest of the entire campaign, and Hincapie certainly played his part in ensuring our neighbours barely had a sight of goal.

The 23-year-old star made five ball recoveries, four clearances, and won a tackle and interception on a comfortable top-flight bow.

EZE’S FAIRYTALE DAY

Playing in his first ever north London derby, it was scarcely believable to see Eberechi Eze score his first career hat trick.

It was also the first treble in this fixture since 1978, and what a stylish collection of goals he produced!

Controlling a classy one-touch pass from Rice he danced between two Spurs midfielders before lashing home his first.

In the second period Eze then curled home two beauties, striking the ball cleanly off both feet, showing power and poise with his finishing.

Hitting six shots in total, the gifted Eze was unlucky not to grab a fourth when Vicario spectacularly pushed away a fierce left footer late on.

But nothing could spoil what was a very special afternoon for our summer signing, who has etched his name into Arsenal folklore forever.

Unplayable, silky and simply irresistible on the day, wearing the 10 shirt, Eze’s display was very much a 10/10.

Description

Still buzzing from our north London derby success?

The morning after our latest big win over Tottenham Hotspur, we’ve rounded up a selection of records broken at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Take a look through them below!

Eberechi Eze is just the fourth player to score a hat-trick in competitive meetings between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur after Ted Drake (October 1934), Terry Dyson (August 1961) and Alan Sunderland (December 1978).

Eze has scored the 400th hat-trick in Premier League history. He's the 23rd player to score one for Arsenal, with no side having more different hat-trick scorers in the competition.

Eze is the first Englishman to score in his first league NLD for Arsenal since Ian Wright & Kevin Campbell in December 1991.

We have won each of our last four league games against Tottenham Hotspur, only enjoying longer runs in August 1980 (6 wins) and January 1989 (5 wins).

Our 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur is our joint-biggest Premier League win over them (6th time), doing so most recently in November 2012 (5-2).

We have scored 16 goals in our opening six home Premier League games this season, only netting more in 2009-10 (20), 2004-05 (19) and 2022-23 (19).

Only against Liverpool (6) does Leandro Trossard have more Premier League goals against a side than Tottenham Hotspur (4).

In 2025, only Erling Haaland (25), Mohamed Salah (23), Bryan Mbeumo (21) and Antoine Semenyo (18) have been involved in more Premier League goals than Eze (18 – 10 goals, 8 assists).

All seven of Eze’s Premier League goal involvements against Tottenham Hotspur have come in his last four games against them (6 goals, 1 assist), netting five goals in his last two games against them (brace in May 2025).

Eze joins exclusive NLD hat-trick heroes club - Arsenal.com
Description

Ebere Eze has gone from admired Arsenal talent to historic status in the space of one early evening in north London.

Our no. 10 hit a hat-trick which downed Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium in Sunday's roaring 4-1 victory, sending us six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The weekend's derby success saw us register our joint-biggest margin of victory in the Premier League against Spurs, and Eze helped himself to three after Leandro Trossard had opened the scoring.

Ebere, a lifelong Gooner to boot, has now entered an exclusive club of north London derby heroes, who have hit hat-tricks in the fixture in 212 meetings.

He has become only the third Arsenal player and fourth in total to register a treble in a competitive derby between the clubs, and the first in 47 years.

Ted Drake was the first to achieve the feat in 1934, with Alan Sunderland the last before Sunday back in 1978. Terry Dyson is the only player to have managed the achievement in a Tottenham shirt, in 1961.

We take a closer look at the trio of Gunners in the hat-trick club's updated list...

Ted Drake (20 October 1934, Arsenal 5-1 Spurs)

Drake remains the joint-fifth-highest goalscorer in Arsenal history, having mustered a prolific record across his spell in red and white between 1934 and 1945, scoring 139 times in 184 appearances.

And after arriving at Highbury from Southampton, it took him no long wait to fire us to the First Division title in his and manager George Allison's debut season, netting 42 goals in as many games.

Three of these came in the derby fixture on home turf with Tottenham in October 1934, in which we hammered our neighbours 5-1. Pat Beasley also got his name on the scoresheet for the Gunners on the day, along with an own goal from Spurs' Thomas Evans.

Ted almost repeated the feat within the same season, scoring a brace in the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane, which we won via a 6-0 thrashing in front of a crowd of over 47,000.

The wins inspired a prolific Arsenal side to finish the campaign as league champions for the fourth time, four points ahead of second-placed Sunderland.

Tottenham, by contrast, finished rock-bottom of the table and were relegated to the Second Division alongside Leicester City.

Alan Sunderland (23 December 1978, Spurs 0-5 Arsenal)

Sunderland made over 200 appearances during a seven-year stint at Highbury, and netted the iconic winner in the 1979 FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

However, earlier on in the same campaign of 1978/79, the midfielder-turned-striker demonstrated his goalscoring exploits further with a treble at the Lane.

Despite finishing seventh in the First Division that term, our best streak of results came in the build-up to Christmas with a 10-match unbeaten run - the last of those coming in our first north London derby of the season in December.

It was festive party time on our rivals' patch that day, as Alan helped himself to three of a 5-0 rout, with Frank Stapleton and Liam Brady also chipping in.

Stapleton then scored the only goal of a 1-0 win at Highbury in the reverse fixture the following April, as we finished four places above Tottenham in 11th as well as lifting the FA Cup courtesy of Alan's iconic finish.

Ebere Eze (23 November 2025, Arsenal 4-1 Spurs)

We approached this north London derby with a chance to extend our lead at the top of the Premier League to six points on upcoming opponents Chelsea, with Ebere facing Tottenham for the first time since his summer arrival from Crystal Palace.

Since moving to Emirates Stadium in 2006, the Gunners had only once lost to Spurs on home turf in league meetings, so spirits were high among the supporters ahead of a chance to claim a fourth-straight derby victory.

Ebere had already found his goalscoring touch in red and white, grabbing his first for the club in a Carabao Cup tie with Port Vale, later netting the winner against former side Palace in the Premier League.

But this was to be the day our no. 10 would enter the history books for good, lashing home three wonderful finishes to take the game away from Tottenham after Trossard had put us into the ascendancy in N5.

The 4-1 triumph in front of an electric crowd maintained our grip on top spot, with Tottenham in ninth place and Ebere joining Drake, Sunderland and Spurs' Dyson as north London derby treble-scorers.

The incredible NLD record Arteta has maintained | Statistics | News - Arsenal.com
Description

Our 4-1 north London derby success over Tottenham Hotspur was notable for numerous reasons.

Having extended our unbeaten run in all competitions to maintain our lead at the top of the Premier League table, we also strung a fourth-straight win against our rivals to ensure their 15-year wait for a win in N5 continues.

And if one man has been able to keep all those runs going, it’s Mikel Arteta, who had his own personal record to keep intact at the weekend.

That’s because throughout his Arsenal career as a player or manager, Mikel has never lost a home game against Tottenham in any competition.

The Spaniard’s love affair with home north London derbies began in February 2012 when he lined up in midfield alongside Alex Song and Thomas Rosicky, and his cross for Bacary Sagna led to us coming back from an early 2-0 deficit to beat our neighbours 5-2.

When Spurs returned the following November, he played his part in us recording the same scoreline, and after helping us to a 2-0 FA Cup third round success and a 1-1 draw in 2014, his final north London derby appearance came in November 2015 when he appeared off the Emirates Stadium bench for the final 13 minutes to help us secure a 1-1 draw.

He would find himself back in the same dugout on derby day in March 2021 but this time as our manager, and recorded a 2-1 success over Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham team as Martin Odegaard’s first Premier League goal and a penalty from Alexandre Lacazette completed a comeback.

Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte’s sides were then both beaten 3-1 in September 2021 and October 2022 respectively, and while Ange Postecoglu did earn a 2-2 draw 12 months later, our 2-1 success the last time we faced off in N5 in January stretched Mikel’s unbeaten home derby record to 10 - five with his boots on and five without.

In fact, even when you include his trips to White Hart Lane and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mikel’s record continues to be impressive. He lost just twice against Spurs on the nine occasions he was patrolling our midfield, while he has tasted defeat against Tottenham three times as our boss in 11 encounters.

That means, following on from Sunday, he has a combined record of 13 wins, three draws and five defeats from his 21 derby days.
