Before every home game, Renée Slegers gives her thoughts around the team and our upcoming game in her manager's notes published in the matchday programme.

Ahead of our north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium, the head coach analyses our victory over Chelsea and wants to carry our winning momentum into another big game.

Good evening and welcome to Emirates Stadium for one of the biggest and best games of the WSL season – a north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur in front of a huge and very enthusiastic crowd! We’re excited for it, and delighted to be back here at our home for the third time in a week.

We managed to secure a great result earlier this week against Chelsea, with the help of you, our supporters. We achieved what we set out to do but we refuse to get ahead of ourselves. It’s only half time in the tie and we’ll have to bring everything to that second leg at Stamford Bridge to secure a spot in the semi-finals. We’ve done it before and we’re not done yet.

Stina kicked us off with a perfect, clinical header, off the back of a perfect set-piece delivery from Katie. I spoke on Tuesday about how much we’d missed Chloe when she was out with injury and she proved that once again with that goal. And then Alessia showed her unbelievable quality with that finish. If you think her finish was good on Tuesday, come and watch her train! Alessia has the ability to score in so many different ways and from so many different angles, which is precisely what an elite striker does. Not only that, she plays with so much conviction and sense of timing, which is vital for big matches like these. If anyone can believe it, I think Alessia gets better every day, even though she was already at the highest level when she joined us. So I was delighted with the goals we scored against a very strong defence and thought we were ruthless with our chances.

That said, it was a very tight game on Tuesday, which is exactly what we expected from a team of Chelsea’s quality. They had some promising opportunities early on, but we didn’t let that affect our mentality. The team kept their composure and were ready to capitalise at precisely the right moments. I was particularly happy with how task-orientated we were throughout the match, constantly problem-solving in the final third and finding ways out of Chelsea’s press. All the while, the players had to contend with a very high intensity, physical duels and minimal space to manoeuvre on the pitch. It demanded a lot from us, so now it’s important to reset, recover and be ready for another important game this evening.

We’re excited to bring this positive energy and form into today’s north London derby. Spurs have battled hard this season and we were disappointed not to take three points from our last encounter. That has solidified our determination this time around. We understand what this derby means to the supporters because it means the same for us.

Finally, a word on Kim Little. Our captain reached an incredible milestone earlier this year with her 400th appearance for the club and now she has officially signed a new deal. We couldn’t be more delighted.

One thing that stands out about our captain, even beyond her footballing ability, is her professionalism. She is 18 years into her Arsenal career and Kim has not let her standards slip once, because she understands that there is always something to learn in this game.

She works incredibly hard to ensure she’s operating at the highest level for the team and for herself, showing up with belief and humility. She’s a very special player and person to work with every day. Kim embodies the values and standards we want at this club. A club legend and a legend of the game. Let’s enjoy today – COYG!

RIVAL REVIEW

Spurs sit fifth in the WSL ahead of the weekend with 29 points from 18 matches, six points behind us having played two games more. They’re comfortably in that position, nine points clear of sixth-placed Everton.

Our local rivals have lost their last two league games though - 5-2 away to Manchester City and 2-1 at home to Everton. This season’s other north London derby - at Brisbane Road in November - was a 0-0 draw.

Martin Ho’s side began the 2025/26 campaign well, winning five of the first seven league matches, but have since failed to win consecutive WSL games, while we’re hunting our 11th victory in a row in all competitions.

Spurs knocked Leicester City out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup before beating London City Lionesses on penalties to setup a quarter-final clash away to Chelsea in April.

In the Subway Women’s League Cup, they finished top of their group with wins over Bristol City, Birmingham City and Aston Villa, before being eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Manchester United.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Slegers: “We look forward to it. We've been talking to the players about connecting with the crowd and starting in the warm-up because they're going to help us in the game.

“We want to bring something to them, so that connection is really important for us. The earlier people can be at the stadium, the better, so we can share this occasion and make the very, very best out of this tomorrow.”- Read every word of Renée’s pre-Spurs press conference.

Ho: “It's going to be difficult. I'm under no illusions; we're not going to be able to just turn up and think we're going to have it our way. It's going to be difficult, they're ten unbeaten in all competitions, they're full of confidence, full of belief, they've got goals coming from every part of the pitch, so I have no doubt that they're going to be right at it.

"It's at their home ground and we're going to have to at times suffer without the ball and be prepared to do that, but when we have the ball we're going to have to express ourselves really well and make sure that when we go there we apply ourselves and we don't take the occasion in, we just play the game.”

TEAM NEWS

Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord are both available after returning from the AFC Asian Women's Cup with Australia, but Kyra Cooney-Cross has stayed overseas to spend time with her family and won't be with us for the rest of the season.

Leah Williamson is also not in contention for this fixture.

For Tottenham, Toko Koga and Maika Hamano are back available after their Asian Cup success with Japan.

A late decision will be made on the fitness of Ella Morris, who has been out for nearly 10 months with an ACL injury. Clare Hunt misses out as she is set to have surgery on her right knee, while Jess Naz, Maite Oroz and Luana Buhler remain long-term absentees.

FACTS AND STATS

We have won nine of our 12 WSL games against Tottenham (D2 L1), scoring 33 goals in north London derbies while conceding just four times.

Tottenham’s only win against us in the WSL came at home in December 2023 (1-0), but they haven’t scored in four league games against us since, their worst ever goalless run in the WSL against one side.

We have conceded only seven goals from open play in the WSL this season, only ever conceding fewer 16 matches into a campaign in 2021/22 (6). We have kept a clean sheet in each of our five league games in 2026, last having a longer streak between March and October 2022 (10 in a row).

We are averaging the most points per game in the WSL in 2026, winning four of five games (2.6 – D1); only in 2017 (first 9), 2015 (first 6) and 2012 (all 14) have we had a better unbeaten start to a calendar year.

We are unbeaten in each of our last 66 WSL home games when scoring first (W62 D4), since a 2-1 loss to Liverpool in July 2016; no other team has ever had a run of 50+ games in the competition.

On MD17 against West Ham United, Smilla Holmberg (19y 161d) became the youngest player in WSL history to assist two goals in a game for us and only the second player in the competition’s history to assist twice on their first start after Karen Carney in April 2011.

Since her first appearance back at Arsenal in February last year, only Khadija Shaw (70 minutes) has a better goal involvement rate in the WSL than Chloe Kelly (73 – 7 goals, 5 assists – min. 150 mins) - on MD18 against West Ham, she netted our first WSL hat-trick since October 2020 (Vivianne Miedema vs Tottenham).

MATCH OFFICIALS

Grace Lowe has been appointed to take charge of Saturday’s derby, assisted by Georgia Ball and Isabel Chaplin.

Lowe has seen over seven WSL matches this season, most recently involved in one of our games when we lost 5-2 away to Aston Villa towards the end of 2024/25.

Referee: Grace Lowe

Assistant Referees: Georgia Ball and Isabel Chaplin

Fourth Official: Farai Hallam

Every word of Renée’s pre-Spurs press conference - Arsenal.com
Description

Renée Slegers was back at the Sobha Realty Training Centre for her pre-Tottenham Hotspur press conference on Friday.

Our head coach previewed Saturday's north London derby, provided the latest team news after our 3-1 win over Chelsea and more.

Here's everything she had to say on the following subjects...

on if Catley and Foord are available and if there are any other team news updates:

Yes, Steph and Caitlin are available. I think I mentioned it before, Leah doesn't make it to this game. The other one is Kyra [Cooney-Cross]. She stayed in Australia to spend time with her family and we're respecting that. She won't be with us for this game and she won't be with us for the rest of the season.

on what Little brings to the squad with her quality and how she leads by example:

Yes, I think you see her quality on the pitch. She makes things work. Actually, if you look at statistics and certain metrics, I don't think it always shows what qualities players bring. So I think there's a lot of work that Kim does that is under the radar, even though her metrics look very good of course. But she does a lot of things that you almost can't measure; how she helps the team, how she keeps the distance short, how she connects, how she covers spaces and covers up for others to be able to play their role. So there's a lot about Kim and her game and the way she contributes and helps us, and then of course her leadership and who she is off the pitch. She is 100% always in everything she does. She is consistent with everything she does. She's just, with who she is and how she does things, she's such a rock for the team.

on having extra momentum going into this game from our 10th win in a row against Chelsea this week:

Yes, every game is a game in itself. We have to keep on doing what we're doing and fuel ourselves with the belief that we have and all the things that we're doing at the moment that are contributing to our performances and results. There's a lot of big and small things that we're consistently doing at a high level. That's what we're pushing and we want to keep on improving. This is another game, so everything that we've done before won't count in this game. We're going to attack this game together with the supporters. At the moment I think around 45,000 to 47,000 tickets sold. We'll be there together with the supporters and we'll be shoulder to shoulder. We want to give them everything we possibly can and they will give it back because this is a very special game. I think it will be a very special occasion at Emirates tomorrow.

on if our form can have an impact on a derby match:

We want to bring what we always want to bring; our basics, our foundation of who we are, we want to bring that to every single game. Yes, there's something special about this game. We have to play the occasion and use the occasion. But we are so strong because we are very much in control and in our controlled middle, task-focused and in the present. That's what's bringing us good performances at the moment. That's what we want to bring tomorrow as well.

on the frustration of our goalless draw away to Spurs earlier in the season:

That's a long time ago. Of course, we've watched that game back and I think we defended well in that game. We couldn't get the goal. It was a different phase in the season. We are somewhere else now. They've also moved. It's a new game, but of course we've looked at it. Of course, we're very hungry for tomorrow.

on the exciting occasion for almost 50,000 supporters tomorrow:

Yes we look forward to it. We've been talking to the players about connecting with the crowd and starting in the warm-up because they're going to help us in the game. We want to bring something to them, so that connection is really important for us. The earlier people can be at the stadium, the better, so we can share this occasion and make the very, very best out of this tomorrow.

on Blackstenius’ next game being her 150th for Arsenal and the impact she’s made this season:

Stina has specific qualities. I think that she will always bring to a game her physicality and her speed, but there are so many more things to Stina. I think you saw it clearly in the game against Chelsea, how versatile she's become, how many different sides to her game that she shows at the moment. We're really happy and pleased to have Stina. Of course, I've played with her a long time ago and I get to share a team with her now again. She's such an important contributor to the team and how we're playing at the moment.

on what kind of challenge we’re expecting from Spurs after our draw with them and defeat to them in pre-season:

I think those two games were different games for the personnel, the way we play and where we were at in the season, both teams. They've posed us different questions in those two games so far, so let's see what they do tomorrow at the Emirates, playing in the north London derby, what their strategy will be. Again, we have to plan for all the scenarios and be really good in all phases of the game. There's a couple of things that we really want to nail tomorrow, so that's going to be important. We'll have focus on ourselves and we'll see how Tottenham comes out.

on the conversations surrounding Little’s new contract:

Personally, I am not in those conversations, so that's all managed through Claire and Jodie. I think there's a very deep respect both ends, from club to Kim and from Kim to club. I just feel very privileged to work with Kim. We are creating something and Kim is a big part of it. I know she's been around for a long time, so she's been so loyal to the club for so long. She's been so consistent for so long, so I highly respect Kim. I think what we do at the moment is a lot of collaboration with the captain's group, with Kim, our captain, and get as much input as possible on things. I highly value that. She's such an important part of what we're building.

on the optimism surrounding Williamson’s future at the club:

Yes, the club is doing everything to build a really good squad. For the future, of course, and in the here and now. Game to game, a lot of games going on, but we're doing the work in the background with the contract.

on the short turnaround between matches we’ve had:

Yes, we love to be in this rhythm of playing games. It's a rhythm that we like, the short turnarounds. We get to work towards the next game. We have a great big squad. We have players ready to go, so we love to be in this rhythm. Of course, we look forward to playing in the north London derby in front of so many fans, together with so many fans. We are full of energy going into tomorrow.

on if players prefer to be playing matches than training:

Yes, of course. You want to play the games. This is the position we want to be in. We want to be playing all these games. We know that means short turnarounds and that's why we have this squad. We love to play the games and look forward to tomorrow.

on the biggest threats or issues we could come up against tomorrow after our 0-0 draw earlier this season:

Of course, they made it hard for us. I think we also didn't have our best performance. We want to bring more to the game. We want to bring different things to the game tomorrow. That's going to be important. We know that they're very brave on the ball. That's going to be an important part of the game. We know they're very good at dribbling with the ball. That's also going to be a very important part of the game and how we're going to manage that tomorrow. Like I said, we are focused on ourselves and we want to bring something to this game that is better and different from what we brought last game.

Description

The north London derby is back! We take on Tottenham Hotspur at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Here's why you need to be at Emirates Stadium this weekend.

We are pushing hard for a top-three finish and a coveted Champions League qualification spot, and every point matters. Sunday's match could prove decisive in shaping the rest of the season. The stakes don't get much higher than this.

Spurs are right on our heels in the table and fighting for the same Champions League places. This is no longer just about bragging rights (though those matter plenty). This is a six-pointer with the season on the line. North London rivalry, genuine jeopardy, pure theatre.

Pull up a chair. You won't want to miss this one.

The most electric matchday atmosphere in the WSL. With over 40,000 supporters expected to fill Emirates Stadium, this is women's football at its loudest, most vibrant best. There's nothing quite like it.

The pre-match experience just got a serious upgrade. Lifelong Gooner and one of England's most celebrated DJs, Monki, will be playing a special pitchside set from 4.45pm before kick-off.

Lucy Monkman is a DJ, producer, label founder, broadcaster, self-confessed baller and lifelong Arsenal fan. Come early and catch her set before the action kicks off.

Emirates Stadium is taking part in the Barclays WSL's Alcohol Choice pilot this season, giving supporters the option to enjoy a drink, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, within view of the pitch, including from their seat inside the bowl.
