Goals galore: Our ace scoring streak against Spurs | Statistics | News - Arsenal.com
Description

Whether it’s Dennis Bergkamp’s famous chop and shot or Cesc Fabregas dribbling through the Tottenham defence to score straight from a kick-off, all Gooners will have their favourite goals from north London derbies in N5.

And thankfully, there are plenty to choose from, especially since the turn of the century, as we’re currently on a record-breaking run of scoring in successive home matches against Spurs.

You have to go back to November 1998 for the last time we failed to score on our own patch against the Lilywhites in the Premier League, a run of 26 matches - our longest home scoring streak against an opponent in the competition. It also means that we have scored in every single league NLD at Emirates Stadium since it was opened in 2006:

The record-breaking run is also the fifth-longest home scoring streak in our entire league history, although we still have plenty of work to do over the next decade if we’re to usurp the 35 times we scored past Bolton Wanderers across 73 years:

We’ve also netted at least twice in each of the last eight occasions we’ve met Tottenham at Emirates Stadium, and should we do so again on Sunday, that will tie the record currently held in visits from Leicester City between 1997 and 2016:

Obviously, scoring goals goes a long way to winning matches, and thanks to our ability to regularly find the net against Tottenham, we are also on a long unbeaten streak on our own patch.

Having won on their first visit to N5 in the Premier League in May 1993, Spurs have since won just one of the subsequent 32 matches at Highbury or Emirates Stadium in the competition’s history, which came in November 2010 when they came back to triumph 3-2.

That means we have not lost to our rivals at home for 15 years, and another victory against our rivals will mean we have picked up more points against Spurs at Emirates Stadium than any other team:

Derby day joy: Six classic successes against Spurs | From the vault | News - Arsenal.com
Description

Nothing stirs a Gooner’s emotions more than a game against Tottenham Hotspur, with victories over our arch-rivals going down as some of our supporters’ most memorable moments following the club.

There have been plenty to choose from down the years, so we have selected five of the best from the last four decades. Sit back and enjoy these successes over Spurs:

November 24, 1996

Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham

In just his sixth game in charge, Arsene Wenger quickly discovered the passion and fever around derby day. Spurs arrived having won six of their last seven, while we were on a run of one victory in six, but we turned the form book upside down. Ian Wright handed us a 28th-minute lead from the penalty spot but Andy Sinton equalised with a bobbling long-range effort just before the hour mark.

A disappointing draw looked on the cards until the 88th minute when Tony Adams slammed us back into the lead, and better was to come when Dennis Bergkamp brilliantly controlled a Wright cross, escaped the attentions of Stephen Carr and set himself perfectly to fire past Ian Walker to secure a first win over our rivals in nearly five years, and score one of the fixture’s greatest goals.

November 16, 2002

Arsenal 3-0 Tottenham

However, perhaps the best-ever goal scored in the north London derby arrived six years later when Thierry Henry single-handedly sliced his way through the Spurs side to produce a moment worth immortalising in bronze outside Emirates Stadium years later.

Just 13 minutes in, there seemed little danger when the Frenchman picked the ball up midway inside his own half, but he surged past Matthew Etherington and Carr to reach the edge of the Tottenham area, and fired into the net before performing a famous knee slide in front of the travelling support. Further strikes from Freddie Ljungberg and Sylvain Wiltord sealed a comfortable win, but Henry’s brilliance was the abiding memory.

October 31, 2009

Arsenal 3-0 Tottenham

This was a Halloween horror show for Spurs. Things were pretty level until the 42nd minute when Van Persie nudged a Bacary Sagna cross goalwards and Heurelho Gomes let the effort slip under his body, and the celebrations hadn't died down when straight from kick-off, Wilson Palacios gifted possession to Cesc Fabregas to tuck home.

More shambolic defending was punished on the hour mark when the visiting defence switched off when an advantage was played, and Sanga's cross caused miscommunication between Gomes and Ledley King, allowing Van Persie to simply tap in his second, and make it 20 games without tasting defeat against our north London rivals.

February 26, 2012

Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

Goals are never in short supply in north London derbies, and this particular encounter was packed full of them. It looked as though our neighbours were on course to record successive wins at our home for the first time in 86 years when Louis Saha and ex-Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor netted, but we would come roaring back when Bacary Sagna headed in a Mikel Arteta cross before a superb strike from Robin van Persie levelled matters before half-time.

Our momentum carried on into the second half when Tomas Rosicky edged us ahead six minutes after the restart, and then Theo Walcott would stamp his authority on the game by racing through to score twice in three minutes to stun our opponents and complete a fine victory.

November 17, 2012

Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

Incredibly, the same unusual scoreline was recorded at the same venue just nine months later as we again managed to recover from falling behind to net five times. Things weren’t going to plan when Adebayor haunted us again, but his 17th-minute dismissal proved pivotal as a Per Mertesacker header, Lukas Podolski’s scuffed shot and an Olivier Giroud finish handed us a healthy lead before half-time.

A goal from the scintillating Santi Cazorla seemed to have secured the points on the hour, but Gareth Bale restored Tottenham’s toe-hold shortly afterwards. However, the final word was left to Walcott again, who restored our three-goal cushion in stoppage time to ensure history repeated itself.

October 1, 2022

Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham

Spurs headed to Emirates Stadium looking to leapfrog us into top spot in the Premier League, but a fine display from Arteta’s team ensured we instead strengthened our lead. Thomas Partey’s wonderful strike from distance set us on our way, but a Harry Kane penalty meant the sides went in all-square at the break.

However a poacher’s effort from Gabriel Jesus restored our lead four minutes into the second half, and Emerson Royal’s red card saw things turn in our favour even more. Needing one more goal to clinch the points, Granit Xhaka drove in a third to secure a third straight home victory in this fixture for the first time since 2013.

The incredible NLD record Arteta wants to maintain

Description

We head into Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, with plenty at stake.

We’re looking to defend our 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions to maintain our lead at the top of the Premier League table, as well as string a fourth-straight win against our rivals to ensure their 15-year wait for a win in N5 continues.

And if one man is able to keep all those runs going, it’s Mikel Arteta, who has his own personal record to keep intact this weekend.

That’s because throughout his Arsenal career as a player or manager, Mikel has never lost a home game against Tottenham in any competition.

The Spaniard’s love affair with home north London derbies began in February 2012 when he lined up in midfield alongside Alex Song and Thomas Rosicky, and his cross for Bacary Sagna led to us coming back from an early 2-0 deficit to beat our neighbours 5-2.

When Spurs returned the following November, he played his part in us recording the same scoreline, and after helping us to a 2-0 FA Cup third round success and a 1-1 draw in 2014, his final north London derby appearance came in November 2015 when he appeared off the Emirates Stadium bench for the final 13 minutes to help us secure a 1-1 draw.

He would find himself back in the same dugout on derby day in March 2021 but this time as our manager, and recorded a 2-1 success over Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham team as Martin Odegaard’s first Premier League goal and a penalty from Alexandre Lacazette completed a comeback.

Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte’s sides were then both beaten 3-1 in September 2021 and October 2022 respectively, and while Ange Postecoglu did earn a 2-2 draw 12 months later, our 2-1 success the last time we faced off in N5 in January stretched Mikel’s unbeaten home derby record to 10 - five with his boots on and five without.

In fact, even when you include his trips to White Hart Lane and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mikel’s record continues to be impressive. He lost just twice against Spurs on the nine occasions he was patrolling our midfield, while he has tasted defeat against Tottenham three times as our boss in 11 encounters.

That means he has a combined record of 12 wins, three draws and five defeats from his 20 derby days - but importantly heading into Sunday, he remains unbeaten in our corner of north London.

Caitlin Foord was left frustrated by our inability to find the back of the net against Tottenham Hotspur, despite dominating the ball at Brisbane Road.

It was one-way traffic for much of the afternoon in the Barclays Women’s Super League encounter, as we continued to press high and win possession in the final third.

“It’s frustrating,” Caitlin Foord told us after the match. “We came here to get the three points. Everyone worked to try to do that and we just weren't able to do it today.

“But credit the Spurs. They made it difficult. They got numbers back and we just couldn't find the end product today.

“Just one [goal] goes in and then there'll be a few more to follow. But we could have done with a little bit of luck, something to fall our way. But we weren't able to get it today. So all down to Wednesday now.”

Fellow Aussie Kyra Cooney-Cross was the one change to the starting line-up, and we asked Caitlin what she brings to the midfield.

“We know Kyra's qualities and the qualities across the whole squad, that anyone can step in and do their role and bring something different,” she said. “I mean, Kyra obviously is able to spray balls out wide and get out of tight spaces.

“Her qualities today were something that I guess Renée was looking for the team to get the job done today. But as I said, with the squad we have, anyone can play and bring the best that they can do.”

Caitlin spent the second half attacking a goal with a sea of red and white behind it, with our travelling supporters in full voice from start to finish.

“They were massive for us,” she said. “Going towards them, the momentum and the energy they brought for us was huge today. It’s just unfortunate that we couldn't give them something to cheer even louder about. But, as I said before, we'll bring that Wednesday.”

There was no faulting the work rate or endeavour against Tottenham Hotspur Women, but we couldn’t get the goals to show for it.

After Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Brisbane Road, Renée Slegers said: “The players worked really hard today on the pitch. I think the second half, the two teams are feeling each other out a little bit. Maybe they didn't come as high and as aggressive as we maybe expected. We are trying to bait them in certain areas in our press. They are very brave, so they keep the ball very low on the pitch and have close connections with their midfielders. Sometimes you could see the players standing still on the pitch. It was because we were looking for the right triggers.

“Second half, we knew it was always going to be important for us, off the back of the Bayern Munich game, but also knowing how Spurs normally play their games. I think we create a lot of momentum in the second half. I think players coming on with fresh legs, fresh ideas, fresh energy. They bring a lot to the team in the second half.

“We need to capitalise on the moments. We create in and around the box, but we'll definitely have a look at whether we can create even bigger clear-cut chances.

“The players worked really hard today. They really wanted to get the win for the fans. That was something we spoke about before the game. We're doing this game for the fans because the game against Spurs is the most important one for them and for us as well. So it's very disappointing and sorry for the fans.”

Olivia Smith is one of the players who our head coach was referring to, coming onto the pitch at half-time with plenty of attacking impetus.

“It's good that, even though she came back from Canada with some medical issues, she's been able to train more consistently now,” Renée added. “She was more ready today. She made an enormous impact with isolating the full-back and going at the full-back in 1v1s and using her speed and her willingness and desire to defend and creating options and things in the box going forward. So she had a real good impact on the game today.”

With Real Madrid up next at Meadow Park in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, we asked Renée how hungry the players are to get through the recent period of three games without a win.

“It's not an easy period, of course, because the players have a high belief in who they are and what they're doing, and me too,” she said. “So it's just not coming easy for us at the moment. We know the flow state we were in last year. We know how good we are when we find that again. We just keep on working hard to get there again.

“Football changes constantly and we have to change with it. Just keep a really big belief in who we are and how good we can be in our very best moments.”

Tottenham Hotspur Women 0 - 0 Women - Match Report - Arsenal.com
Description

The first north London derby of the season ended in a 0-0 draw at Brisbane Road.

We dominated proceedings against Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Women’s Super League, but were unable to find a way through.

FIRST HALF

Eveliina Summanen was first to have a go for goal when she triesdher luck from long range with a free-kick that was too central to trouble Daphne van Domselaar.

At the other end, our first chance came when Emily Fox drifted in from the right after a one-two with Alessia Russo and fired straight at Lize Kop.

Kyra Cooney-Cross then fired just wide of the top right from the edge of the area as we looked like the side most likely to make the breakthrough.

Her inswinging free-kick towards the far post was headed out for a corner by Summanen, before Fox’s ball into the box was headed down by Stina Blackstenius, Kop equal to it.

It was largely one-way traffic as Beth Mead touched the ball inside for Russo in the 18-yard box, the latter shooting wide on the volley.

Blackstenius had an effort saved at the near post after she was played through by Mead with half-time approaching, and it was Mead whose free-kick hit the wall just before the referee blew the half-time whistle.

SECOND HALF

We made two changes at half-time, with Taylor Hinds and Olivia Smith coming on for Katie McCabe and Mead.

Smith didn’t take long to get up to speed, breaking through down the right and pulling it back for Blackstenius, who cushioned the ball first time over the bar.

Smith’s next cross came out to Fox, who cut inside and shot on her left foot, but it was deflected behind for a corner.

Renée Slegers made her third change in the 57th minute, Frida Maanum coming on for Blackstenius.

We almost took the lead in style moments later after Lotte Wubben-Moy charged forward and found Maanum, who flicked the ball in behind the Spurs backline for Smith, only for her low, driven effort to be saved.

Into the 81st minute and still nothing to separate the sides, a short corner came out to Mariona Caldentey, who curled it over the top left.

Chloe Kelly came on for Caitlin Foord with three minutes to go, but in the end we had to settle for a point apiece.

WHAT'S NEXT

UEFA Women's Champions League football returns to Meadow Park, where we host Real Madrid at 8pm on Wednesday. We will then be back in WSL action at home to Liverpool at 12pm on Saturday, December 6, with the game taking place at Emirates Stadium.
