Manchester United consider move for Italy striker Mateo Retegui as Tottenham Hotspur eye up Lazio's Mario Gila - Euro Transfer News

In Wednesday's Euro Transfer News, Manchester United seem keen to add more strikers to their ranks, with Ruben Amorim reportedly eyeing up Mateo Retegui. Tottenham Hotspur are more concerned with shoring up their defence, and are keeping an eye on Lazio's Mario Gila, while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid could find themselves back at the negotiating table, this time over youngster Endrick.

Manchester United eye Italian striker

Manchester United bolstered their firepower in the recent transfer window, but Fichajes is reporting that the club are eyeing up more strikers after a tricky start to the season.

Reports are that Italy international striker Mateo Retegui has caught the eye of Ruben Amorim, who is aware that United have at times lacked potency in front of goal.

Retegui had a stellar record for Atalanta before moving to Al-Qadsiah last year, so Amorim would need some serious cash if he is to prise the Italian away from Saudi Arabia, with the length of Retegui’s deal unknown.

"Last summer, Retegui was transferred to Al-Qadsiah for a fee of around €65-68 million, a deal that marked a turning point," the publication stated.

"Reports estimate that United could pay between €50-60 million for his signing, a figure that pales in comparison to what Al-Qadsiah paid, but which could convince if they negotiate well."

United have already signed strikers Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, from RB Leipzig and Wolverhampton Wanderers, respectively - but Amorim seems yet to decide on his first-choice team, with Retegui an interesting prospect for the Portuguese manager.

"Retegui's track record includes having been a Capocannoniere in Italy, something that Manchester would value as an immediate asset," the report continued.

"His goals were not infrequent: in one match, he scored four goals against Verona, demonstrating a constant finishing ability.

"Furthermore, having experience in different leagues gives him an advantage in the transition to English football, where many forwards stand out for their quick adaptation."

Tottenham considering a new centre-back

Tottenham Hotspur might be in the mood for some signings this coming January.

Despite a relatively strong start to the season, Thomas Frank has his eye on happenings over in Italy, reports Caught Offside.

And it is Spanish star Mario Gila that is the man in question, the Lazio centre-back impressing in Serie A this season.

'I love the country' – Potter on talk of 'fantastic opportunity' with national team

Kane the best striker Tuchel has ever managed as England seal 'dream' 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification

"The defender has made six league appearances for the Italian club this season. With multiple English clubs tracking his situation and Lazio protected by a long contract, the chase for Gila is getting more intense," the report states.

"Tottenham are not alone. Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Everton have all kept close tabs on the Spaniard, and there was concrete interest in the summer, Brighton and Bournemouth are understood to have made contact with the player’s camp as they scoped out centre-back options.

"The defender has been previously linked with Tottenham’s Premier League rivals Chelsea.

"Any Spurs approach will therefore need to be both decisive and persuasive, with role clarity and pathway to minutes likely to matter as much as finance."

PSG debate swoop for Endrick

The current European champions Paris Saint-Germain are reported to be very interested in Brazilian star Endrick in the next transfer window.

Endrick has failed to earn a place in Real Madrid’s starting line-up, and might see a loan move in January as a way to kick-start his career.

"Los Blancos paid around €60 million to lure him away from Palmeiras, which suggested that they were convinced he had enough potential to develop into a world-beater," says One Football.

"However, the teenager has failed to earn a place in new manager Xabi Alonso’s plans, so his long-term future has been a hot topic over the past few weeks.

"Madrid could cut him loose in January, although only loan exits are on the cards at the moment."

PSG and Real Madrid have successfully negotiated in the past, most notably with the latter securing the services of Kylian Mbappe. But whether they can reach a deal for Endrick remains to be seen.

Harry Kane may stay at Bayern Munich amid transfer links to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea eye Kenan Yildiz - Paper Round

TNT Sports

Harry Kane is linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona, but might stay at Bayern Munich. Arsenal hope to sign fresh terms with Jurrien Timber, and may have to battle with Chelsea if they want to sign Kenan Yildiz from Serie A giants Juventus. Elsewhere, Kevin Muscat has been tipped as the favourite to replace the sacked Russell Martin at Rangers in the coming days.

Kane linked with Barca switch

A report in the Mirror links Harry Kane with the chance to replace Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona.

Kane can leave Bayern Munich in the summer for £56 million, provided he gives the Bundesliga champions notice.

The paper explains: "The England striker remains under contract until 2027 but has already been tipped for a move away from Bayern Munich.

"He has a £56m release clause written into his deal with Bayern Munich that will become active next summer but there are a few caveats, such as having to make his current employers aware before the end of the January transfer window should he intend to leave.

"Kane’s former club Tottenham have been linked with a sensational move that will see him return to North London. He however remains open to extending his stay in Bavaria."

Arsenal in talks for Timber deal

Arsenal have started talks with defender Jurrien Timber as they look to keep hold of the Dutchman.

The 24-year-old has impressed at Emirates Stadium and the club want to reward him for those performances.

The Evening Standard reports: "The 24-year-old still has over two years to run on his current deal, but the Gunners want to reward him for his fine performances.

"After suffering a serious knee injury on his Premier League debut two years ago, Timber has become a key part of Arsenal’s defence and one of Mikel Arteta’s most trusted players.

"Timber has played across the defence during his time at Arsenal, impressing at left-back on occasion, but the club’s plan when they signed him was always for him to be a right-back."

Arsenal face battle for Yildiz

Chelsea and Arsenal could tussle for Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, according to the Daily Star.

The 20-year-old Turkey international is attracting interest as he stars in Serie A for Juventus, and has recently been lauded by Zinedine Zidane.

The Daily Star writes: "The Gunners have long been keen on the forward and recently sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old during his clash with AC Milan.

"Whilst London neighbours Chelsea submitted a £61 million offer for the Turkish sensation during the summer, which was rejected, Arteta might include him on his January shopping list."

Muscat leads the way for Rangers

Shanghai Port manager Kevin Muscat is leading the race to take over from Russell Martin at Rangers.

The former defender was considered at previous times by Rangers, and Danny Rohl may not get the gig after all.

The Daily Record states: "On Monday afternoon, after days of fretting over a ludicrously high profile snub from Steven Gerrard, word began to emerge that Muscat was finally being considered seriously as an option.

"And given that Danny Rohl - a 36-year-old German with one full season behind him during which he achieved a 12th place finish in the Championship at Sheffield Wednesday - had taken Gerrard’s position as the obvious frontrunner, it was really little wonder.

"Rohl’s name first cropped up among the candidates pulled together by sporting director Kevin Thelwell back in the summer. That Thelwell ultimately decided Martin to be the better qualified candidate caused an instant credibility problem."

Thomas Frank labelled a 'fantastic communicator' as Tottenham Hotspur edge past Leeds United in Premier League - 'Changed the mentality'

Published 04/10/2025 at 15:52 GMT+1

Peter Crouch called Thomas Frank a "fantastic communicator" after Tottenham beat Leeds at Elland Road to make it seven games unbeaten in all competitions. Spurs opened the scoring through Mathys Tel's deflected strike, only for Noah Okafor to level proceedings before half-time. However, player of the match Mohammed Kudus netted his first Spurs goal to give the north Londoners all three points.

Peter Crouch hailed Thomas Frank as a "fantastic communicator" after Tottenham defeated Leeds at Elland Road to make it seven games unbeaten in all competitions.

Spurs edged past Leeds 2-1 at Elland Road courtesy of Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus goals, either side of a Noah Okafor tap in.

The result saw Thomas Frank’s side move up to second in the Premier League table on 14 points, while Leeds remained in 12th with eight points from their seven games.

Ekitike talks Salah relationship as he targets Premier League title

"The thing Frank has changed at Tottenham is the mentality," TNT Sports pundit Crouch said. "He's a fantastic communicator.

"You see in the way that he talks, he puts his arm around people and tells them how good they are and the qualities that they have.

"We talk a lot about tactics in football, but the personal side, being able to talk to people and get the best out of them and give them confidence is important.

'Excellent finish' - Kudus restores Tottenham’s lead with first goal for club

"From the time I’ve spent with Thomas Frank, he’s a good person to talk to, someone who lifts his players, and I think there’s a lot to be said about that in an age of tactics and formations and the way you play. The personal side is something he does very, very well."

Former Manchester City, England and Spurs shot-stopper Joe Hart added: "It sounds so simple but he just seems like a fair guy. You work hard for him, you do what’s asked of you and he will back you. If you don’t, you’ll see another version of him."

Hart continued: "He’s one of those guys you can speak to. He’s very personable, very open, you can tell he absolutely adores the game.

"To have someone in charge of you like that every day is great. He’s willing to hear people out and maybe hear different opinions."

Frank: ‘The core of any great team is character’

Frank told the TNT panel after Spurs’ victory over Leeds that "character" was the key foundation to building a "great team".

The Dane has seen his new side beaten just once since taking over from Ange Postecoglou, a 1-0 loss to Bournemouth in August.

The Spurs boss said: "I think the mentality and the character of any team is the major foundation if you want to achieve great things.

"It’s such a long season, there are so many difficult opponents - the Premier League is relentless, the difference between teams is so small - and there will be so many small setbacks in games.

"You need to relentlessly keep going so [character] is the core of any team and then of course you need to play good football. But the core of any great team is the mentality and character."

Tottenham youngster Archie Gray hails Steven Gerrard and Jude Bellingham as midfield role models - 'He could do everything'

Published 03/10/2025 at 17:45 GMT+1

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Archie Gray has revealed he modelled his game on Steven Gerrard, and said he also looks up to Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham. Gray burst through at Spurs last season, playing most of his minutes in defence, at both full-back and centre-back. The 19-year-old spoke while visiting students as part of the Spurs Football Development Programme.

Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray has revealed he modelled his play-style on Liverpool great Steven Gerrard.

Gray, who joined Tottenham in 2024 from Leeds United, had little time to shine in his favoured role in the centre of the pitch due to Spurs' lengthy injury crisis last season.

Despite that, he impressed with his willingness to step up and play across the defence, including playing at centre-back. Under Thomas Frank, however, Gray has already started in midfield twice.

When asked which player he wanted to model his game on as a youngster, Gray said: "That’s a tough one.

"When I was younger, if I was going to say a midfielder, I’d always probably say Steven Gerrard. He’s what I would want to be in a midfielder – he could do everything, no matter what it was.

"He could pass, he could tackle, he could shoot, he could do everything on a football pitch, and for a midfielder – I think I’m best when I’m doing every part of the game – I think that’s one player that I could look up to.

"He’s just a role model and, obviously, people in today’s game like Jude Bellingham, especially him as a midfielder, he’s such a good role model to young people and all players, to be fair."

Gray took time out of training during the week to take part in one of the club's development programmes - the Spurs Football Development Programme.

He spoke to a group of students from Culford School, one of Spurs' football development partners, and reflected on his own time as an academy player.

"It is so good to speak to these young players as it reminds me of my days as a kid, asking so many questions and just being eager to learn as much as possible.

"When I was younger, we used to have first team players from Leeds come and offer advice to the youngsters, so hopefully I was able to have the same impact with this group."

The 19-year-old could be in line to feature this weekend when he returns to Elland Road for Spurs' clash with Leeds on Saturday at 12:30 UK time.

Gray's homecoming - shown live on TNT Sports 1 and discovery+ - comes on the back of successive draws, to Wolves and Bodo/Glimt, in which the equalisers arrived in the 94th and 89th minute respectively.

"I can’t wait," Gray said. "That’s my home city, that’s where I’ve been raised and I’ve got so much love for Leeds, but I’m playing for Tottenham now. We’ve obviously got a job to do at the weekend and we’re looking forward to that.

"We’ve definitely had a positive start to the season. These last two results, they haven’t been what we’d been hoping for, but that’s football - you can’t win every game, you’re going to have some draws along the way.

"I think it’s important that we didn’t lose those games; that just shows our mentality, especially coming back late in all those games. Football doesn’t always go the way you want it to go and to be able to come back in those games – obviously, we want to win them and we believe in ourselves – but I think it’s been a solid start to the season and we’re definitely hoping to carry that on."

Highlights: Spurs fight back to earn dramatic draw at Bodo/Glimt

Frank's side are forming a penchant for saving games late, and Gray believes that is a reflection of the squad's overall resilience.

"I think that’s always been a part of this group. We’ve got a strong group, whether that’s in the starting XI or whether it’s on the bench. Everyone just sticks together.

"The most important thing is the manager tells us to always stay in the game no matter what, always sprint back if there’s a counter-attack and always stay in the game, because in football you never know what’s going to happen and always keep fighting until the last minute, which is what we’ve been doing. We’ve been able to get a few goals in the last few minutes of games, so it’s been good for us so far."

Leeds have made a quietly impressive start to their return to the top flight, with Daniel Farke’s side sitting in 11th place ahead of the weekend after two wins, two draws and two losses from their opening six games.

Tottenham fans possibly went into the new season with mixed emotions, having won the UEFA Europa League before Ange Postecoglou was relieved of his duties.

Ally v Fletch - Who did TNT Sports' stars tip to win?

In the latest edition of Ally v Fletch our star commentators Ally McCoist and Darren Fletcher picked who they thought would triumph.

Ally: "Leeds were very unlucky not to win last week against Bournemouth and they have a good home record. But I just fancy Tottenham. I know they were travelling in midweek, but I think they might have a little too much for Leeds. I can see Spurs winning a tight one."

Prediction: Leeds 1-2 Tottenham

Fletch: "Good game, this. I fancy Leeds to score. I've been quite impressed with how they have started the season, but I think Spurs will be too good for them. Spurs have had European football in the week, but I still think they will just edge it."

Prediction: Leeds 1-2 Tottenham

"You would have thought it's more people; my cap was 1295. If you put that into perspective, it's not a lot of people."

Steve McManaman slams 'shocking' Tottenham defending in Bodo/Glimt draw - 'If you watched your Under 19s do this, you'd go crazy'

Published 30/09/2025 at 23:49 GMT+1

Tottenham breathed a huge sigh of relief as they escaped from Norway with a point they scarcely deserved having been outplayed for large parts of their UEFA Champions League encounter with Bodo/Glimt. With a third of the contest remaining, they trailed 2-0 with Jens Petter Hauge's second finish of the night the result of "shocking" defending, according to TNT Sports pundit Steve McMananam.

‘If the under-18 team did this you’d go crazy’ – McManaman blasts Spurs over 'awful goal'

Video credit: TNT Sports

Jostein Gundersen's unfortunate own goal salvaged a late point for Tottenham in the first UEFA Champions League game ever played inside the Arctic Circle, but Thomas Frank's side didn't escape the wrath of Steve McMananam after poor defending left them with a mountain to climb against Bodo/Glimt.

Spurs hauled themselves back from 2-0 down for the second time during Thomas Frank's short tenure in charge to secure a 2-2 draw, having already done so earlier this month against Brighton & Hove Albion.

It looked unlikely after Jens Petter Hauge followed up a fine curling finish by cutting inside to lash in his second after 66 minutes.

Premier League

'Never positive' - Slot confirms goalkeeper Alisson out for Chelsea clash

The lead up to the second goal, however, left TNT Sports pundit McManaman far from impressed.

"If you watched your Under 19s do this, you'd go crazy," McManaman said.

"I have no idea what Djed Spence is doing in the build-up. Not a defensive bone in his body. A goal like this to concede is shocking in a Champions League game."

Highlights: Spurs fight back to earn dramatic draw at Bodo/Glimt

Video credit: TNT Sports

McManaman continued: "Spurs were second best. Bodo missed a host of chances but couldn't convert to get away from Tottenham.

"They rescued a point and that's all that matters. When you look at the home games they've got coming up, they're all winnable.

"They should get maximum points at home and if they can pick up one or two on the road, that should be enough."

Hoddle: Spurs already have Frank resilience

'Last year if we were average, we'd lose 3-0', says Hoddle on Spurs

Video credit: TNT Sports

Captain Micky van de Ven hauled Spurs back into the contest with a fine header from Pedro Porro's cross but when Wilson Odobert slammed an effort against the angle of the crossbar and post, it looked like the hosts were heading for a famous victory.

They were undone by a slice of misfortune, however, as goalkeeper Nikita Haikin blocked a shot from Archie Grey that bounced off substitute Gundersen and flew into the net for a late equaliser.

"It's an ingredient Thomas Frank had at Brentford, where they stuck in games," former Tottenham midfielder Glenn Hoddle told TNT Sports.

"They believed in themselves and they got late goals. Tonight, they were second best in most areas of the pitch but they were gritty. You can't always play pretty.

"That's a great point to pick up away from home at a difficult place to play. Bodo played at around 9 out of 10, they functioned well, defended well and scored two great goals.

Richarlison gets 'telling touch' as Spurs grab late equaliser at Bodo/Glimt

Video credit: TNT Sports

"But they've come off the pitch and haven't won. That shows you the strength of Tottenham now. They can play resiliently and still pick up a point.

"What Spurs fans will be looking at is that last year if they performed average and were too easy to play against, they would lose 2-0 or 3-0.

"You can't outplay teams every week for 90 minutes and outscore them, to be consistent you have to stick in there. They did not look vulnerable defensively apart from the self-inflicted errors.

"They dragged themselves over the line to get a point in the end."

Frank: I'm in no doubt we'll improve

Bodo had 18 shots compared to Tottenham's eight, while they also enjoyed more possession and had more touches in the opposition box.

The result leaves Spurs in fourth position in the nascent Champions League table, with four points from their opening two games, but Frank knows his side must improve if they are to secure automatic qualification for the last 16.

"I think in the first half, it was definitely something that we could have kept the ball a bit better," the Spurs boss told TNT Sports.

Frank impressed with Spurs 'mentality, character'

Video credit: TNT Sports

"I don't think it was only on Richarlison. I think it was probably a little bit of the structure of the team where we could have kept the ball better in certain situations. But I'm not in doubt that it will improve."

"The mentality and the character of the players was very good. We stayed in the game, kept fighting, and that gave us a very good point away from home.

"When you're 2-0 down in a Champions League game, and especially against a Bodo team that is very good here, they need to be happy with that, so I'm happy that we again got back into the game.

"I think it's extremely important that we got back from 2-0 down against Brighton, we got back against Wolves, we got back again today.

"It's hugely important that we show that mentality and keep running, keep fighting hard because you need to do that in football. No matter if you are on top of the game, sometimes the team can score out of nothing."
