Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all face obstacles to sign Brentford captain Nathan Collins - Paper Round

Published 17/08/2025 at 23:01 GMT+1

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are all keen on Brentford central defender Nathan Collins, while West Ham United expect Lucas Paqueta to stay despite previous interest from Manchester City. Elsewhere, Fiorentina goalkeeper David de Gea has been linked with a return to Old Trafford, and Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia could join AS Roma this summer.

Three PL sides chase Collins

Brentford captain Nathan Collins is wanted by Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, who may struggle to sign him.

The 24-year-old defender is attracting attention, but Brentford do not have to sell after recent departures, and will also not want to lose their skipper.

Premier League

Glasner reveals Eze release clause has expired amid transfer speculation

The Daily Mail states: "Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham are all targeting a move for Brentford captain Nathan Collins.

"Daily Mail Sport understands that interest in the 24-year-old centre-half is surging – although The Bees may well be highly reluctant to sell.

"Irishman Collins was given the captain’s armband earlier this month and promptly celebrated by scoring the only goal of the game in a friendly victory against neighbours QPR.

"New manager and compatriot Keith Andrews spoke glowingly of the former Stoke City and Burnley defender, describing him as ‘a natural leader’. And, following a summer which saw two key players depart, Brentford have no need to cash in on a player who joined for a club record £23m from Wolves on a six-year deal in 2023.

"However, United and Spurs have now joined Liverpool in tracking Collins, who succeeded the departing Christian Norgaard as skipper."

Paqueta to stay at West Ham

Karren Brady expects Lucas Paqueta to stay at West Ham United, despite previous interest from Manchester City.

After Paqueta was cleared of spot-fixing, West Ham expect him to stay after their support for the Brazilian.

The Evening Standard writes: "West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady is adamant that Lucas Paqueta will stay at the club this season.

"There has been speculation that Paqueta, who was recently cleared of spot-fixing charges, could look to seek a move away this summer.

"The 27-year-old attracted interest from Manchester City earlier in the summer.

"However, Brady was clear that, having stood by the Brazilian midfielder during a two-year investigation, which carried the threat of a lifetime ban from football, the club were confident of keeping Paqueta."

Man Utd linked to De Gea

Manchester United are weighing up a move for their former goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Sun reports that there is a release clause in his Fiorentina contract that lets him leave for a low price.

The paper explains: "The news will intensify speculation over his future after SunSport revealed Man Utd were considering a shock swoop for former club icon David de Gea.

"The Spaniard has a release clause in his deal at Italian club Fiorentina that could see him rejoin the club for a cut price.

"He is just one of several options under consideration by Ruben Amorim as he looks to strengthen in net.

"Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has also been linked with a move to the North West."

Sancho and Malacia could make Roma switch

AS Roma could sign both Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia from Manchester United this summer.

The left-back is one of several players - including Sancho - who are frozen out of the first team while they look for new clubs.

The Mirror reports: "Jadon Sancho might not be the only player moving from Manchester United to Roma this summer.

"The Italian club, who previously had ex-United manager Jose Mourinho at the helm, have also been linked with out-of-favour left-back Tyrell Malacia.

"Former Feyenoord defender Malacia has struggled for minutes since returning from a long spell out through injury. The Dutch international ended last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, but the Eredivisie champions haven't made the move permanent."

'Think this guy is Brazilian' - Richarlison lauds Mohammed Kudus as Graham Potter says West Ham must improve football basics after Sunderland defeat

Published 16/08/2025 at 20:07 GMT+1

Richarlison joked new Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Mohammed Kudus could be Brazilian after the pair combined for two goals in Spurs' 3-0 win over Burnley. It was a triumphant first Premier League outing at the helm for Thomas Frank, while Sunderland marked their return to the top flight with a 3-0 victory at home to West Ham that left Graham Potter unimpressed by his side's second-half display.

Richarlison waxed lyrical about new team-mate Mohammed Kudus after Tottenham Hotspur's perfect start to Premier League life under Thomas Frank, while the fallout from Sunderland's win over West Ham United was intense.

Kudus assisted both of the Brazilian’s goals in a 3-0 win over Burnley, as Spurs backed up their positive showing in defeat in the UEFA Super Cup with a rampant first domestic outing under Frank that was capped off by Brennan Johnson’s 66th-minute strike.

After latching onto a first-half cross from Kudus on the right, it was Richarlison’s second goal that stole the headlines as he beat Burnley debutant Martin Dubravka with an audacious overhead kick.

Transfers

Eze moves closer to Tottenham transfer as talks with Palace continue - Paper Round

It was almost a carbon-copy assist from Kudus, who lined up on the right of a front three alongside Richarlison and left-winger Johnson, though his delivery was slightly behind his team-mate meaning an acrobatic finish was required.

"I think this guy is a Brazilian," Richarlison said of Kudus, talking to the BBC after the game. "I am so happy with this guy, next week this guy needs to score because he worked so hard for the team."

Speaking alongside Richarlison, Kudus added: "I think it was a brilliant finish. I do not think it was a perfect cross but he made it look so good. It is good to set up the strikers, I am here to serve them.

"Part of the main reason I wanted to come here was playing the position I want to play and be in the position where I can entertain the fans because I believe that is what the game is about. But most important is doing it at the right time, it is good we got the win and enjoyed part of the game as well."

Potter laments basic errors by West Ham

Kudus joined Tottenham for a reported £54.5 million from West Ham in the summer, and his former employers slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Despite the overhaul on Wearside this summer, it was three stars of The Black Cats’ promotion-winning season who made the difference, as Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor ensured Sunderland were joint-top of the Premier League table with Tottenham by the full-time whistle.

After a positive first half in which they were the better team, West Ham wilted in a raucous Stadium of Light following Mayenda’s opener - Sunderland’s first Premier League goal since Javier Manquillo netted in 2017 - and allowed Regis Le Bris’ side to run out comfortable winners.

Having only signed three players for fees so far this transfer window in stark contrast to their opponents, the evidence suggests that has not been enough for West Ham to improve on a disappointing 2024/25 campaign and make up for the loss of Kudus, so Potter was not impressed afterwards.

"We need to get better, we need to improve, we need to understand what happened," Potter told the BBC. "There was not too much in the game, it was a fine-margins game but the scoreline reflects poorly on us and we need to accept that.

"The goals are big moments and we need to do better, as soon as you are 1-0 down the game obviously becomes more difficult. The first goal is always important and we played a decent away performance in the first half but it is not too much comfort at the moment because the second half was not good enough."

When asked where those improvements need to come, Potter added: "For me it was the basics of football. Defending your box, being better in those situations because certainly in the first half we were good, the basics we need to do better."

Le Bris believed Sunderland’s overhauled line-up was also to blame for West Ham’s first-half superiority with new signings accounting for seven of his starting 11 - only Ballard, Mayenda, Trai Hume and Jenson Seelt featured from last season’s squad.

New centre-back Omar Alderete also appeared from the bench while Marc Guiu was an unused substitute, but the star of the show was Granit Xhaka - and Le Bris praised the Swiss midfielder.

"Granit is important for us, he set the tone and we knew before that he could be the key factor in our squad," Le Bris told the BBC. "We have many young players and to make sure that everyone is working together; we need this kind of player.

"They started well, they are more experienced so probably we were a bit shy in the first half and we needed time to connect with this level. We had pre-season games but it is not massive regarding how many changes we made in our squad.

"So we need time and during this first half we tried to find the adjustment and it was much better in the second half with the energy of the squad and their togetherness, and we found the solution."

Ballard also paid tribute to Xhaka, telling the BBC’s Final Score: "We are so lucky to have him. His presence around the place, his leadership. I have never seen that in a player. We are quite a young team and I did not think one man could have the influence he is having. He has been amazing and we are lucky to have him.

"There were obviously some nerves, a lot of expectation coming into this game. We wanted the three points today. I do not think we would have settled for anything less. So there were a bit of nerves and excitement. We knew the crowd would be up for it and they really helped us today."

Tottenham Hotspur condemn racist abuse of Mathys Tel after UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain - 'Nothing but cowards'

Published 14/08/2025 at 10:17 GMT+1

Tottenham released a statement condemning the "abhorrent" racist abuse of Mathys Tel after Wednesday night's UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Tel missed a penalty in the shoot-out and was targeted on social media after the match. "Those who abuse him are nothing but cowards," Spurs wrote. Micky van de Ven also missed from the spot as PSG came out on top in Udine.

Spurs have condemned the racist abuse directed at Mathys Tel on social media after his missed penalty in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.

Tel was one of two Tottenham players to miss from the spot in the penalty shoot-out, as PSG lifted the trophy.

A statement on Spurs' website read: "We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat.

"Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.

"We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.

"We stand with you, Mathys."

Tottenham led 2-0 against PSG in Thomas Frank's first competitive game as manager, thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

But there was a late fightback from the European champions, who halved the deficit after 85 minutes through Lee Kang-in, and then levelled in injury time when Goncalo Ramos struck.

Vitinha missed PSG's first penalty in the shoot-out but the French side were otherwise immaculate, while Tel and Van de Ven missed for Spurs.

'We had them where we wanted them' - Frank reflects on shoot-out defeat to PSG

"I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best," Frank told TNT Sports after the match.

"We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until 2-1. Then it shifted the momentum, but I'm so proud of the team, players, club and fans.

"We showed we can be adaptable and pragmatic. We needed to be that against a team like PSG, with the way we wanted to defend with both high pressure and a low block. The first half was almost perfect and the set-pieces were very dangerous.

"In one game, I think we have shown we can play against any team in the world. I'm not in doubt about that and that's a positive to take away from this.

"I think the players gave everything. I think for 75 to 80 minutes we were perfect, almost giving nothing away."

Thomas Frank says Tottenham Hotspur proved they ‘can go up against any team in the world’, Luis Enrique labels Paris Saint-Germain victory 'a miracle'

Thomas Frank was in a buoyant mood despite Tottenham Hotspur's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The Dane insisted that Spurs proved they were capable of taking on "any team in the world". Spurs squandered a 2-0 lead, as PSG scored in the 85th and 94th minutes to take the game to a shootout, which the UEFA Champions League holders won.

Thomas Frank insists that Tottenham Hotspur are capable of going up "against any team in the world" despite their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on penalties.

Spurs led UEFA Champions League holders PSG 2-0, after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero each claimed a set-piece goal for the Premier League side either side of half-time.

However, PSG, who had only returned to pre-season training a week ago, finally breached the Spurs defence through substitute Lee Kang-in in the 85th minute, before Goncalo Ramos' 94th-minute header sent the game to penalties.

Tottenham ‘better team by far’ against PSG, have created ‘template’ for success

While the French giants went on to win the shootout 4-3 and claim the first available silverware of the campaign, Spurs boss Frank was in a buoyant mood after the game.

"I think in one game we showed we can go up against any team in the world," the Dane told TNT Sports. "I have no doubt we can do that and that’s the positive we’ll take from it."

He continued: "We played a very good game. We played against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best in the world at this moment in time.

"But I think we had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes - until the goal to make it 2-1.

"And then, of course, there was a shift in momentum but there were so many positives. I’m so proud of the team, the club, and the fans.

"There’s so much to be happy with. It’s a flip of a coin when you go into a penalty shoot-out."

Frank went on to praise his side’s committed defensive performance, as well as their ability to capitalise from two set pieces.

The former Brentford boss continued: "I think we showed that we could be adaptable and pragmatic because that’s what we needed to be against a team like PSG.

"I think the way we wanted to defend - both high pressure and low defending was exceptionally good. I think the first half was top - almost perfect.

"And also the set pieces were very good and very dangerous. Set pieces are key. For any team it should be a weapon in my opinion. We definitely want to focus on it because I think it’s a key area."

Luis Enrique: It was a miracle PSG won

PSG boss Luis Enrique conceded that Spurs were the better team in Udine, adding that it was a "miracle" that his side were able to snatch the victory.

"For 80 minutes we didn’t deserve that," Enrique told TNT Sports. "I think Tottenham deserved to win the match.

"We could feel they were in form, we could feel they had been training for six weeks. They played a great match.

"But we had been training for only six days and sometimes football is unfair. I have to say that we were very lucky that in the last ten minutes we could score two goals.

"My players had faith until the last minute, as did the supporters, but football is unpredictable and in that sense I have to say we were very lucky."

The Spaniard added: "It's difficult to play the way we want to play if you don’t train and don’t have the time to train. I have to say it was a miracle."

Tottenham failed to win two successive trophies after being beaten by UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shoot-out in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine. Spurs took a 2-0 lead but PSG produced a late comeback to force spot-kicks. Former Tottenham midfielder Glenn Hoddle tells TNT Sports, he was encouraged by what he saw ahead of the new season from Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle says Thomas Frank's side showed they have the "template" to compete in the UEFA Champions League this season - despite losing the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs were seemingly cruising to victory in Udine after goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

However, a late fightback from the Champions League winners saw Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos find the net to take the match to penalties.

Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed from the spot before Nuno Mendes dispatched the winner for PSG.

However, Hoddle was not left angered by Spurs' late collapse but instead encouraged by what they could achieve in the new campaign.

"They did more than hold their own," he said on TNT Sports. "They were the better team by far. Luis Enrique actually sort of apologised, in a way, when he went up to Thomas Frank at the end.

"That will give them so much belief going into the Champions League. We’ve played against this great side that have won the Champions League.

"We went toe-to-toe and more and, over 90 minutes, we were the better team.

"I think that’s a template. The way they played there, don’t be surprised if they play Liverpool, they play Man City, they play Arsenal, that’s a template to play in the Champions League, maybe away from home, that is something that they’ll really grasp.

"They’ll look at that and analyse it and say ‘we were the better team’. So that’s a template now to go on the front foot and go toe-to-toe with these teams. That is a massive performance from Tottenham tonight.

"Yes, it’s emotional and disappointing because you’re 2-0 up and 10 minutes to go and you’ve lost the cup, the trophy’s gone, but at the end of the day I think it’s a real positive night for Tottenham."

Hoddle praises PSG 'resilience'

For PSG, it is another trophy for their dazzling cabinet of silverware. The UEFA Super Cup can nestle in close to the UEFA Champions League - a trophy they will be desperate to retain this season.

For so long, the French club were known for signing some of the biggest names in European football.

Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all featured for the club, but they were unable to enjoy the success of the current crop.

"I think if you look at the Paris Saint-Germain team with all the superstars in it, there’s no way that at 2-0, with 10 minutes to go that they turn that game around," Hoddle said.

"But this side have not played well tonight. Tottenham were the better team. But [PSG] ended up celebrating with the trophy. And they did that in a 15-minute spell and finished off with better penalties than Spurs.

"At the end of the day, PSG have got some resilience about them. They’ve got some character.

"I’m not saying the other PSG team didn’t, but it was all superstars, all creative football, and not really worried about how they defend.

"This team have got [balance] now, and they’ve got really good creative players as well. They’ve got the balance right. That’s why they will be one of the favourites to go back and win [the Champions League].

"Like everyone says, whether you’re a tennis player, a golf player or a footballer, to win is one thing, but to maintain it and retain that trophy is very, very difficult."

How Liverpool, Tottenham and Crystal Palace could face whopping 68-game season in non-stop 2025/26 campaign ahead of World Cup

Published 13/08/2025 at 14:56 GMT+1

Ahead of a congested 2025/2026 campaign, we felt the time was right to find out how many games Liverpool, Manchester City and the other Premier League teams could play this season ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Not every team will play the same number of fixtures this term, with nine different English clubs set to take part in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

Highlights: Palace win Community Shield on penalties after Ekitike scores first Liverpool goal

Video credit: TNT Sports

The 2025/2026 campaign looks set to be one of the busiest seasons ever, with nine English clubs competing on four fronts.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur will all take part in the UEFA Champions League as well as the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Premier League.

Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest can add the UEFA Europa League to their three domestic competitions, while FA Cup winners Crystal Palace will have a chance to add another trophy to their cabinet in the UEFA Conference League.

Premier League

Liverpool's to lose? Man Utd top six? What success looks like for your club - Part Two

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place next summer, there is more emphasis on player welfare than ever.

The iconic tournament, which will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, will get under way on June 11, 2026, less than three weeks after the final round of Premier League fixtures on May 24.

With that in mind, we thought the time was right to take a look at how many matches the Premier League clubs could end up playing this term.

‘Have to remember those moments’ - Merino motivated by ‘tough’ UCL semi-final defeat to PSG

Video credit: TNT Sports

How many matches will the teams that are not in Europe play?

Eleven Premier League clubs will be involved in three competitions this term.

That includes 20-time Premier League champions Manchester United, who have failed to qualify for Europe for the first time since the 2014/15 season.

Those 11 sides will contest 38 Premier League fixtures, and if one of them reaches the final of the FA Cup, they will add another six matches to their tally.

That is not all though. If that same team were to win the Carabao Cup, they would add seven more fixtures to their schedule - including a two-legged semi-final - taking their tally up to 51 matches.

How many matches will the teams that are in Europe play?

If you think that schedule is gruelling, spare a thought for the teams competing in Europe.

Not only will those sides have to play 38 Premier League games, but they could also compete in as many as 17 matches in Europe.

However, that will only happen if they reach the final and have to take part in a knockout phase play-off.

The teams in Europe will only play a maximum of six Carabao Cup matches, but if they reach the final of the FA Cup, they will contest another six fixtures.

That will take their potential total for the season up to 67 matches.

The exceptions to that rule are Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

Palace played Premier League champions Liverpool in the FA Community Shield, meaning The Reds could play 68 matches this season.

The Eagles could also play 68 matches this term.

That is because, having been demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League, they need to qualify for the league phase.

Oliver Glasner's side will play either Danish side Midtjylland or Fredrikstad from Norway.

However, there are two fewer league phase matches in the Conference League, meaning Palace's fixture total is also a maximum of 68.

Spurs could play 68 matches too, due to their involvement in the UEFA Super Cup, where they will face Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.

UEFA Super Cup: Tottenham Hotspur's Yves Bissouma dropped by Thomas Frank for Paris Saint-Germain showdown due to lateness

Published 12/08/2025 at 23:39 GMT+1

Yves Bissouma has been dropped by Thomas Frank ahead of the Dane's first competitive match as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The defensive midfielder has been late "several times" according to the new boss, who is preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Wednesday evening's match in Italy will be shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+ with coverage starting from 19:00 UK time.

Yves Bissouma has been dropped from Tottenham Hotspur’s squad for the UEFA Super Cup because he has been late "several times".

Manager Thomas Frank revealed the disciplinary reason for his absence in his press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the day before the final.

Spurs, winners of the UEFA Europa League, are facing the UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in Udine, Italy, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

It will be Frank’s first competitive match as Tottenham's manager and it poses an opportunity for the club to win more silverware after ending their 17-year trophy drought back in May.

Defensive midfielder Bissouma, who featured 44 times in all competitions for Tottenham last season, will not play a part, however.

"He’s been late several times and the latest time was just one too many," explained Frank in a press conference.

"With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love, but there also needs to be demands and consequences. This time there was a consequence for that."

Luis Enrique: Spurs job was an option before I joined PSG

It is the second time the Mali international has been suspended by Spurs for a disciplinary issue.

Former boss Ange Postecoglou left him out of a Premier League game at the start of last season after a video circulating on social media appeared to show him inhaling laughing gas.

Bissouma subsequently apologised, citing a "severe lack of judgement".

He now has a new manager to impress in Thomas Frank, who joined Tottenham this summer following seven years at Brentford.

So far, Bissouma has featured in just one of the Dane’s starting line-ups in pre-season - a friendly game away at Luton Town in July, which finished 0–0. He has come on as a substitute in other fixtures, most recently a 4–0 loss against Bayern Munich.

Spurs will also be without James Maddison for the final. His absence is due to injury though, having damaged his ACL in a pre-season fixture against Newcastle in Hong Kong.

PSG have some key stars missing, too. Midfielder Joao Neves is suspended, while goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been left out of the squad after the French champions snapped up promising 23-year-old stopper Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

UEFA Champions League winner Donnarumma has since confirmed he will be leaving the club. Young midfielder Senny Mayulu is also sidelined due to injury.

Frank outlines ambition at Spurs - ‘We don’t want to wait as long again for a trophy’

Video credit: TNT Sports

Thomas Frank gave an exclusive interview to TNT Sports ahead of Wednesday night's final, describing PSG as "probably the best team in the world right now".

He added: "The beautiful thing in football [is] if you have two teams that are competing, there’s a good chance that you can compete in one game, and we will definitely be ready for that.

"I am pretty sure that we will be competitive tomorrow night in one game."

Frank also outlined his ambitions for his Tottenham tenure, explaining how he wants to build a side which can be "consistently competitive" across all competitions.

Spurs get their 2025/26 Premier League campaign underway just days after the UEFA Super Cup final.

They face newly promoted Burnley at home in their opening fixture on Saturday, August 16, after champions Liverpool kick-off the new season against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night.
