Fenerbahce chase Trippier

A move to Saudi Arabia, Burnley or Atalanta are just some of the options for Kieran Trippier, according to The Sun.

The veteran defender hopes to leave Newcastle United, with both Fenerbahce and AC Milan also in the mix.

Europa League

'I never fear any question' - Mourinho feels 'disrespected' after missing press conference

The paper reports: “SunSport revealed how the defender is 'desperate' to leave Newcastle amid his struggles on and off the pitch.

“Less than 12 months after Bayern Munich failed in their attempts to sign him, Trippier is losing the battle with Tino Livramento as the first-choice right-back under Eddie Howe this term and has retired from England international availability.

“The club reportedly leading the chase for Trippier's signature in January is said to be Fenerbahce.

“The Turkish giants showed interest over the summer following Mourinho's arrival in the dugout. AC Milan are also thought to be monitoring Trippier's situation keenly.”

Tottenham set to keep Son

Tottenham Hotspur will avoid losing Son Heung-min on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to the Evening Standard.

The club will exercise an option to extend his contract by another season, though talks are yet to start on fresh terms.

The paper explained: “Tottenham will trigger a clause to extend captain Heung-min Son’s contract by a further year.

“The Spurs skipper is out of contract at the end of the season but the club has an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, which they will exercise.

“The extension will see Son enter an 11th season with the club, having arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 in a deal worth around £22 million.

“Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Son revealed he had not held talks with the club over a longer-term extension but was focused on finally delivering silverware this season.”

Szczesny set for Barca switch

Former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is set to come out of retirement just a month after announcing his decision.

The Athletic claims that the Polish veteran will be brought to Barcelona as back-up following Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s recent injury.

The website notes: “Barcelona have made contact with Wojciech Szczesny as they explore possible options to replace injured first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

“Ter Stegen, 32, ruptured a patellar tendon in his right knee against Villarreal on Sunday. On Monday, Barcelona confirmed he had undergone a successful operation on the area, and there are fears he will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

“The club are targeting an experienced goalkeeper to offer competition for Inaki Pena, who has deputised for Barcelona in Ter Stegen’s absence, and Szczesny would initially come in as understudy to the La Masia graduate.

“Szczesny announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 in August.”

City linked with Rafinha deal

Although unlikely, the Mirror believes that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola could make a signing after Rodri’s injury.

They suggest that Rafinha, who played under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, could be an option as he is currently a free agent.

The paper writes: “Guardiola could also be tempted to bring a new face on board - albeit unlikely. With the transfer window being closed, City might potentially dip into the free agent market.

“The most likely option might potentially be former Barcelona midfielder Rafinha. The Brazilian played under Guardiola at the Camp Nou and has been out of work since leaving Qatari side Al-Arabi.

“A few more injuries might trigger Guardiola into moving but it seems slightly unlikely at this moment in time.“

Ange Postecoglou will lead Tottenham Hotspur for the first time in a European competition as the north London club face Qarabag FK in their UEFA Europa League opener on Thursday.

Spurs were forced to sit out of European action for the first time since 2009/10 in the previous campaign - Postecoglou's first as manager of the club - after a poor 2022/23 season saw them land eighth in the Premier League table.

But Spurs are back in Europe, and fresh off the elation of a dominant win over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday - overturning Bryan Mbuemo's goal in the first minute in a strong response to their 1-0 setback against rivals Arsenal in the previous week.

Alexander Isak struck the winner as Newcastle United beat Tottenham 2-1 in a lively encounter at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s men broke the deadlock on 37 minutes when Harvey Barnes produced an excellent first-time finish to convert Lloyd Kelly’s cross from the left.

Tottenham dominated following the restart and deservedly levelled when Dan Burn bundled substitute Brennan Johnson’s cross-shot into his own net.

Late VAR drama denies Bournemouth as points shared against Newcastle

Ange Postecoglou’s men were utterly dominant but could not make it count on the scoreboard with James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Johnson all going close.

Newcastle then made them pay with a lightning counter-attack 12 minutes from time as substitute Jacob Murphy set up Isak to roll home.

The result means The Magpies have won their first two home matches in a Premier League season for the first time since 2000/01 and moves them up to fourth spot with seven points from three outings.

Tottenham suffer their first loss of the league campaign and sit 10th.

Next up, Newcastle visit Wolves on Sunday September 15 after the international break while Tottenham host neighbours Arsenal.

Talking Point – Newcastle revel in important win as Tonali returns to English top-flight for first time in 316 days

This was a hard-fought win for Newcastle and it didn’t go unnoticed that for long spells they were outplayed by a profligate Tottenham. However, the positives are hard to ignore for Howe and Co as they followed up a midweek League Cup win by maintaining a strong start to the PL season.

The Magpies scored for the 21st home league match on the spin and maintained a perfect home record (in 2024-25) to make it 10 PL games unbeaten at St James’ Park.

Throw in the Premier League return of midfielder Sandro Tonali from his betting ban as a second-half substitute, and despite unrest from supporters over a lack of transfer activity this summer, things are pretty positive for The Toon heading into the international break.

Player of the Match - Alexander Isak (Newcastle)

The Swede was industrious throughout and got his reward with the winning goal. It was his first of the new campaign and came after he had gone close with a cross-shot against the post.

Leicester City v Tottenham Hotspur live – Premier League latest as Pedro Porro header puts dominant Spurs in front

Submitted by daniel on

Description

A typical Jamie Vardy goal, in typically adverse Jamie Vardy circumstances, earned Leicester a point after Pedro Porro had put a dominant Tottenham in front. Vardy, now 37, only persuaded his body to play because Patson Daka was injured, but no one will be surprised that once there, he made his presence felt.

Looking at the teams before kick-off it was hard to envisage how this could be a contest, and the first half was not: Spurs dominated from start to finish. But they created relatively few chances and had to settle for just one goal, Pedro Porro trying with a back header and succeeding with his back, sending James Maddison’s teasing cross past Mads Hermansen.

There was no sense whatsoever that Leicester could take something from the game, but they were more aggressive after the break, both in and out of possession. Nevertheless, an equaliser did not look imminent and then one arrived, Vardy heading home after good work from Victor Kristiansen and Issahaku Fatawu.

After that Leicester were the better side, Vardy missing the kind of chance he has made a career out of snaffling. But then Rodrigo Bentancur sustained a head injury, the match stopped for nine minutes, and never quite reigned its momentum – thankfully Bentancur is now sitting up and talking. So Spurs return to London wondering quite how they managed to avoid winning while Leicester, haunted by the spectre of points deduction, may feel just a little more optimistic about the season ahead.

Oliver Skipp completes Leicester transfer as 16

Oliver Skipp has left Tottenham Hotspur after 16 years at the club, joining newly promoted Leicester City in a deal reportedly worth upwards of £20 million.

The 23-year-old midfielder becomes Steve Cooper's sixth summer signing as The Foxes' bid to remain in the Premier League after a one-season absence gathers pace.

Joining former Spurs midfielder Harry Winks in Leicester's ranks, Skipp signed a five-year contract with the 2016 Premier League champions.

'This club demands trophies' - Maguire hungry for more silverware at Man Utd

Leicester begin their Premier League return at home to Skipp's former side Tottenham on Monday evening, but the club confirmed that although the midfielder would be in attendance at the King Power Stadium, he would not play, instead being available to make his debut in their second outing, a trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham next weekend.

Speaking to the club website, Skipp said: “I’m really excited to sign. I’ve got the feeling that it’s a good group of people and a good group of players. I’m sure that we’ve got a squad capable of challenging in every game.

"You look around the squad and there’s lots of exciting players who have played in the Premier League and I’m really excited to see what this group can achieve.

“I had conversations with the people here and they gave me a feeling of warmth and that they were excited to have me on board. As a player, when you feel that excitement, that’s something you can use to develop your game.

"The staff here know me as well - Steve [Cooper], I have worked with at England so there’s definitely a good relationship there and I’m keen to push on and show what I can do.”

Skipp was picked up by Tottenham in 2008 before coming all the way through their youth academy. He would go on to make his debut as an 18-year-old in a League Cup clash against West Ham a decade later.

The defensive midfielder went on to make 84 appearances at Spurs, scoring his only goal in a 2-0 home win over Chelsea last year.

Skipp was deemed surplus to requirements at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the summer arrival of former Leeds midfielder Archie Gray, who signed for £30 million in early July.

Aside from making Abdul Fatawu's loan from Sporting CP permanent, Leicester have moved for Caleb Okoli, Michael Golding, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Facundo Buonanotte so far this summer.

Emerson Royal has left Tottenham to join AC Milan. The full-back has put pen to paper on a four-year contract in Italy, while the club also hold the option of a 12-month extension. It is believed the deal has cost the Rossoneri around £13 million. He took to Instagram to say "thank you for everything" to Spurs as he brought to an end a three-year stay in North London after making 101 appearances.

Tottenham have confirmed the departure of Emerson Royal, with the defender joining AC Milan for a reported fee of around £13 million after three years in North London.

It brings to a close a drawn-out transfer saga after the Italian club spent most of the summer pursuing the full-back.

But he has now completed his switch to the San Siro and could make his debut in Saturday's Serie A curtain-raiser against Torino.

Premier League

'Type of player that we don't have' - Carvalho joins Brentford from Liverpool

"We wish Emerson all the best for the future," Spurs said in a short statement as they announced the move.

Royal first joined Tottenham in 2021, arriving on the final day of the summer transfer window from Barcelona.

He went on to make 101 appearances over the subsequent three years, scoring four goals in the process.

The 25-year-old, who was born in Sao Paolo, has also won 10 caps for Brazil.

Writing on Instagram, he expressed his gratitude to Spurs, saying: "Thank you for everything...you will always [be] in my heart."

Responding to a further post from Tottenham striker Richarlison, he added: "I will always root for your success."

Milan had a bid in the region of £8.5m rejected for Royal earlier in the transfer window.

However, their interest in him did not cool, and he has now put pen to paper on a four-year deal in Italy, while the club have the option of a 12-month extension.

He will wear the No. 22 shirt at the San Siro, and becomes their third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Alvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlovic.
