Paul Ince has exclusively told TEAMtalk why he cannot believe the price Tottenham Hotspur are willing to spend to beat Manchester United to Mateus Fernandes, with a sly dig at the cost of modern-day players and amid claims of what he and Roy Keane would fetch today.

The West Ham star is emerging as one of this summer’s most in-demand stars as he prepares to leave the London Stadium after just one year in East London. Despite a superb season on a personal level, Fernandes was unable to prevent the Hammers slipping out of the top flight, ending a stay of 14 straight seasons, meaning he will now be sold off to the highest bidder.

That chase has, for several weeks now, been led by Manchester United, who have engaged in talks with the player and his representatives and gained what they had felt was a strong promise that he would say yes to a move to Old Trafford.

However, with West Ham holding firm on their minimum £80m valuation and refusing to be bullied into accepting a lower fee, United have opted to bide their time in the hope that the Irons buckle over their demands.

That tactic, though, looks like it has now backfired and with Tottenham now bursting into the race, sources have shared the growing optimism they now have at sealing a deal.

Spurs’ hopes are fuelled by not only a willingness to pay the player more than United are offering, but also by agreeing to stump up a £85m (€99m, $112m) package to convince the player to move across the capital.

In light of that, former West Ham and United star Ince has revealed that the transfer fees being bandied about for top midfielders this summer are utterly mind-boggling.

Furthermore, the 58-year-old, who himself joined the Red Devils from the Hammers back in 1989, could not help making a sly dig over what he feels both he and his former Old Trafford teammate Roy Keane would be worth if they were playing today…

When asked about the costs involved with Fernandes and if it takes him back to his own move from east London to Stretford, Ince told TEAMtalk, on behalf of BestBettingSites, the home of the best betting sites in the UK: “Well, it’s funny… I went from West Ham to Man United for £1 million! Which is absolute madness when you look at the prices today.

“When you are spending that type of money £80million, £110million, you expect that kind of money to be reserved for a striker who guarantees you 30 goals a season.

“Mateus Fernandes at West Ham… they’re talking £80 million for him. I mean, before he joined West Ham, he played in a Southampton side that went down; he’s now had back-to-back relegations, so to command that kind of money is crazy

“I know he’s technically a very good player, but when you pay that much money for midfield players, I want to see an all-rounder.

“I look at how I used to play, or Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard – lads who went up and down, scored goals, put in massive tackles, and set up chances. Pure all-rounders.

“I don’t think a lot of these modern players are true all-rounders.

“So, for clubs to spend this type of money is pure madness.

“If you’re talking £120 million for Elliot Anderson… come on. Jesus Christ, that’s a lot of money!

“It’s not the kid’s fault, but if Roy Keane is valued at £300 million in today’s money, then if Anderson is worth £120 million, I’ve got to be worth at least £250 million, at least (he said with a laugh!).”

Should Man Utd miss out on Fernandes, they do have other targets in mind.

However, as TEAMtalk exclusively revealed on Thursday morning, efforts to convince Bournemouth to sell Alex Scott have quickly been met with an emphatic response, with the Cherries making big plans of their own for the England midfield hopeful.

United could also turn to Aurelien Tchouameni instead, and an update from Fabrizio Romano has given United some hope that a big-money deal is there to be done with Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly come back at Newcastle United with a ‘second approach’ for Sandro Tonali, and they have been given a firm response.

Spurs are really not messing around in this summer’s transfer window, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side making ambitious moves in the market after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

The north London side have already splashed out around £55m to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, while they have landed Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka on free transfers.

And Tottenham remain in the market for plenty more additions, with at least one new centre-midfielder among their priorities.

In recent days, it has emerged that they are making a serious play for West Ham star Matheus Fernandes, who is also wanted by Manchester United.

We reported on Thursday afternoon that they have received the full green light to land Fernandes ahead of Man Utd, though they are also working on a deal to sign Tonali.

Tonali is looking to leave Newcastle following their failure to qualify for Europe, but we have reported this week that Manchester City could beat Spurs in the race to sign the centre-midfielder.

Now, a report from The Daily Mail‘s Newcastle United correspondent, Craig Hope, claims Spurs have had a ‘second approach’ for Tonali ‘rebuffed’ by their Premier League rivals.

Reason for Newcastle decision revealed as club chiefs fear exodus

According to Hope, Tottenham’s first ‘offer’ for Tonali was worth around £75m and instead of submitting an improved proposal, they have got back in touch with Newcastle to ‘ask them to reconsider’.

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle have decided to ‘swiftly knock back’ this ‘second approach’ because they want ‘closer to £100m’ for their prized asset, who is under contract until 2030.

Still, Newcastle face a damaging exodus in this summer’s transfer window.

Having already lost Anthony Gordon, we have reported that Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento are all seriously considering an exit this summer.

Regarding Guimaraes, Premier League champions Arsenal are among six leading suitors to sign the Brazil international, who has become disillusioned at St James’ Park because he has no intention of staying to purely be part of a prolonged rebuild.

Therefore, Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson has serious concerns about Guimaraes and fears that he may also leave this summer.

Tottenham are accelerating their push for midfielder Mateus Fernandes and are now confident they are close to sealing an agreement worth up to £85million, and with time no longer on Manchester United’s side, sources have told TEAMtalk.

Fernandes, the 21-year-old Portuguese talent, remains a top target for Spurs as they look to strengthen their midfield significantly this summer.

Tottenham are determined to bring in multiple top-class central midfielders, with Sandro Tonali of Newcastle another confirmed target, ahead of the new campaign.

However, it is a move for Fernandes that is now advancing rapidly, and they are now in advanced discussions with West Ham over a new club-record deal.

Sources indicate that Fernandes has given Spurs what’s described as his full green light to press forward, accepting their proposal on personal terms.

The north London club are prepared to offer substantially higher wages than Manchester United, who are seeking to maintain discipline within their wage structure. This financial edge on personal terms has strengthened Spurs’ position in the race.

Significantly for Tottenham, and as TEAMtalk reported on Wednesday, the north London side have shown greater willingness to meet West Ham’s asking price for Fernandes, a stance that is now evident in their aggressive approach to finalising Fernandes.

The Hammers are seeking a package of around £85m (€99m, $112m) for Fernandes and it’s understood that Spurs have presented a package that reaches that amount, albeit with a smaller chunk – estimated to be worth £65m up front – with the rest in add-ons and bonuses.

Such a fee will represent a new record outlay for Tottenham Hotspur.

Furthermore, the Spurs manager, Roberto De Zerbi, continues to show a strong pull, with players keen to join his project, giving the club added confidence when competing for some of the most wanted signatures, and hence why sources have described Tottenham as now having a full green light to seal the deal.

However, there remains a major caveat to any deal actually crossing the line, in the form of Manchester United and sources continue to insist they are not out the race just yet – though time does appear against them and the onus is now on INEOS to pull together a package that matches Spurs’ terms…

Despite all that, Fernandes is not yet ready to shut the door on a move to Old Trafford.

However, Manchester United – who have until this point adopted a patient approach and refused to be bullied into paying above and beyond what they think is a fair reflection of the player’s worth – remain in talks for the highly-rated youngster and have not been ruled out.

Adding to their chances are the fact that Fernandes has long dreamt of a move to Old Trafford, where he could link up with his idol, Bruno Fernandes.

The extra sway of Champions League football is another very obvious sway.

Yet above and beyond all that is the desire of Tottenham to sign him and their strong charm offensive aimed at winning this transfer race, together with the fact they are offering, until this point, a more sizeable financial package.

But with Spurs putting the squeeze on United, the north London side, at the time of writing, are growing increasingly confident they will win his signature.

West Ham, meanwhile, have been happy to bide their time and will not be pressured into selling for less than they value the Portugal star at, safe in the knowledge that he is viewed as one of the best young midfielders in world football.

As a result, they are happy to see the potential auction that could unfold for the player and are confident of landing a premium price for the 21-year-old.

A move to Spurs would represent a major statement of intent from the club under their new leadership, while United view Fernandes as a future cornerstone if they can persuade him to head to Manchester.

The coming days are set to be critical, with Spurs pushing hard to finalise the agreement and Manchester United look to negotiate a deal that suits their strict structure under INEOS.

Either way, it seems this particular transfer battle is too rich for even Real Madrid, who now made a firm decision – on Jose Mourinho’s instruction – over a possible Los Blancos approach.

Meanwhile, with United preparing for bad news, they have pivoted to other targets in the form of Alex Scott.

However, my colleague, Graeme Bailey, shared the news on Thursday morning that the Cherries have taken a very dim view on fresh United enquiries for the player.

Liverpool owners FSG have made a firm decision over the future of winger Cody Gakpo, and with Tottenham Hotspur learning their chances of a big-money raid on Anfield, a journalist has named the dream £78m-rated replacement the Reds could bring in.

Gakpo’s form, like so many of his Liverpool teammates, dropped off a cliff across the 2025/26 campaign as the Merseysiders put up a meek defence of their Premier League title.

That ultimately cost Arne Slot his job, though the pedestrian football and the fact that the Dutchman had lost the fans also proved significant in FSG’s decision to axe him and bring in Andoni Iraola as his replacement.

With Gakpo himself coming in for widespread criticism from the Reds fanbase, speculation has risen in recent weeks that the winger could be sold by Liverpool this summer, while those rumours have been further fuelled by strong reports in his homeland that the winger is ready to ask to leave Anfield, fearing reduced minutes under the club’s new regime.

That has alerted Tottenham to the possibility of luring the 121-goal winger to north London, and now journalist David Lynch has revealed there is a real chance that FSG look to move Gakpo on this summer.

“I was really, really surprised, I’ll be honest, when I kind of had a conversation about this just before I went away,” Lynch told Anfield Index.

“I said, surely there’s no chance Gakpo’s on the way this summer, they’ve got so much to do already. The answer I got back was kind of ‘hmm, nah, we could sell him.’ I really didn’t expect that personally, I thought Liverpool would just totally acknowledge that he’s got his flaws, but give him one more season, see where he’s up to and what they can get out of him from a new manager. But he very much seems to me to be up for a possible sale this summer.

“That’s not to say he’s guaranteed to go, but if an offer on the table comes in that is good enough, then Liverpool will 100 per cent accept it. I just didn’t expect that at all. So, one to definitely keep an eye on.”

Lynch did, however, play down speculation that Gakpo has asked to leave, though did share the £78m-rated star the Reds could feasibly try and sign as his replacement…

Why Liverpool want to replace Gakpo with Bradley Barcola

In dismissing claims that Gakpo will try and force through his departure, Lynch continued: “One thing that was played down, this idea that he’s asked to leave, is nonsense.

“At the moment, the player’s focus is on the World Cup as I understand it, but maybe when he comes back, there’s a real chance for him to go. It does rely on people stumping up the money, but it seems there’s interest in him. So, if that happens, we could be saying goodbye to Gakpo.”

While Liverpool’s main focus is Yan Diomande, the prospects of them signing a third winger this summer (after a deal for Victor Munoz was struck last week) cannot be discounted.

And he admits the Reds will be paying close attention to developments over Bradley Barcola’s situation at PSG, amid suggestions they could cash in on the France winger for a fee of €90m (£78m, $103m).

“For me, that feels very feasible,” he said. “There are so many things that have to happen here. Gakpo has to go; the bid has to be right, and that probably happens after his World Cup campaign. Then Barcola will have to be in a position where PSG are willing to let him leave. He’s got to pick them [Liverpool].”

He added: “Arsenal have been linked previously, there’ll be competition. But I’ve been reporting for a long time that Barcola’s a player of interest.

“Earlier in the summer, I felt that they want Diomande, if they can’t get him, then maybe the door is open to Barcola, but the fact that he’s someone that they do like, he can play on either side and centrally, though he primarily prefers the left, it does make sense that he’d be someone they’d pursue if they do lose Gakpo.

“If Gakpo goes, then he would need to be replaced,” Lynch added. “And I don’t think Diomande and Ngumoha are seen as replacements. I would watch that one, it feels like it’s not taking too huge a leap to say it’s a possibility to see Gakpo going and Barcola coming in.”

Fabrizio Romano recently declared that Barcola is a player that Iraola “loves”, while admitting a crucial detail on his contract that could play into Liverpool’s hands.

Despite that, there is no doubting that FSG’s number one priority is securing the signing of Diomande.

With regard to that, a journalist has shared the frustrations that are building within the player’s camp as they wait for Liverpool to strike a deal with RB Leipzig and amid a claim that a record-breaking agreement could be done in ‘one or two days’.

Liverpool and Manchester United could enter the frame for Tottenham Hotspur starlet Luka Vuskovic, despite him agreeing personal terms with a rival Premier League club, a report has claimed.

Vuskovic continued his exciting development on loan at Hamburg from Tottenham last season. The centre-back established himself as one of the best young defenders in the German Bundesliga and became a surprise goal threat for Hamburg, scoring six times in 30 appearances.

Vuskovic is currently representing Croatia at the World Cup, and he started during their opening 4-2 defeat to England.

Tottenham rate Vuskovic very highly, but he is a strong candidate to leave this summer as they have already signed fellow central defenders Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Indeed, sources have already confirmed to our transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey that the teenager has asked to leave N17 this summer, fearing a reduction of his minutes and making it clear he does not want to leave on loan again.

Brighton have finalised personal terms with the 19-year-old and sent Spurs two bids for him, worth £30million and £45m respectively.

However, both of those offers have been rejected as Spurs value Vuskovic at closer to £60m.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool and Man Utd are watching the situation closely and could enter talks to hijack Brighton’s move.

Liverpool are searching for a long-term defensive solution, and Vuskovic is exactly the type of player they are looking for.

He already has top-level experience and has the potential to develop into an elite star.

Signing Vuskovic would help Liverpool to replace Ibrahima Konate and prepare for life after the legendary Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds have already taken steps to future-proof their backline, having captured Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet, and Vuskovic could arrive to make their defence even stronger.

Marcus Rashford wants Barcelona move – sources

Rashford enjoyed a very successful spell at Barcelona, scoring 14 goals and giving 14 assists in 49 matches in all competitions last season.

The England international winger helped Barcelona win LaLiga last season.

“Key to that all: Barcelona would prefer United to accept an offer in that region in exchange for an obligation to make the move permanent next summer in 2027 and following another year’s loan – as had always been their plan.”

A deal for Fernandes will not be cheap, given the transfer fee and the wages involved, but that will not stop Tottenham from signing him – or at least trying to – as well as Sandro Tonali.

Sources have told us that Tottenham are keen on signing Tonali from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle want at least £100million for the Italy international midfielder.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “I stand by my news.

“Last week, out of nowhere, exclusive news – Sandro Tonali – Tottenham full stop.

“So, today, I keep mentioning Tottenham and Tonali, Tonali and Tottenham.

“I remain on my position.

“Tottenham are working on the deal to sign Sandro Tonali, and that remains the case.

“Deal one. Tottenham – Tonali.

“I am not coming here mentioning Man City,

“I am not coming here mentioning other clubs.

“Since I told you Tonali – Tottenham last week, the other clubs are no longer mentioned by myself at least.

“Let’s follow the situation, but the deal is on.”

Romano added: “Then Mateus Fernandes – one of the most intriguing cases in the recent months on the market.

“Why? Because I told you in a video also yesterday.

“The player will go to who’s offering one euro more in terms of club, so West Ham are ready to accept the best proposal, and then it’s going to be on the player, of course, but both Tottenham, Manchester United, behind the scenes, are working on this.

Liverpool are not ‘actively’ looking to offload Gakpo as Iraola is a fan of him.

The 27-year-old is aiming for a ‘bigger role’ at Anfield, despite the arrival of Spanish winger Victor Munoz. Gakpo could help out Alexander Isak at centre-forward while Hugo Ekitike recovers from Achilles surgery.

Fresh Yan Diomande bid

Liverpool see RB Leipzig sensation Diomande as their successor for Mohamed Salah and will return with an improved offer, according to German newspaper Bild.

Liverpool thought €100m (£86m) would be enough to forge an agreement for Diomande, but they saw an opening bid worth that sum rejected by Leipzig.

Iraola’s side remain undeterred and are drawing up a thrilling new bid worth €100m plus €20m in add-ons, totalling €120m (£103.5m).

A host of reports have valued Diomande at somewhere between €120-148m (£103.5-128m).

Even Liverpool’s second bid might not be enough to get the deal over the line. Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schafer supposedly has an ‘agreement’ in place with Red Bull chief Jurgen Klopp not to sell Diomande for any price this summer.

Hijack possible

Liverpool have already beaten Newcastle to Munoz and Ekitike over the past year, while also snaring Isak from the Magpies, and there could be a repeat this summer.

Newcastle have been described as long-term admirers of AZ midfield prodigy Kees Smit by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, but they have been warned to watch out for Liverpool.

We revealed on Tuesday that the Reds have been offered the chance to hijack Newcastle’s move for the 20-year-old.

Edwards claims Newcastle are not making active moves for Smit, though we understand they were actually one of the frontrunners before Liverpool entered the frame.

A former Manchester United manager has held ‘discussions’ over the signing of Lucas Bergvall, who has made it clear he wants to leave Tottenham.

Bergvall won Spurs’ Player of the Season award a couple of years ago. But come the end of last season, he was hardly in the side, with new boss Roberto De Zerbi starting him just once in the seven games he took charge of at the campaign’s conclusion.

That led the Swede in recent days to tell Tottenham he wants to leave the club.

He is reported as asking for a new challenge, looking for a club where he’s going to get consistent minutes in the No.8 position, as he feels it’s clear there’s no obvious route into the Italian’s plans.

Milan have Bergvall competition

The Italian club have a number of other suitors alongside them pursuing Bergvall.

Indeed, TEAMtalk is aware that among his strongest admirers are Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, while Milan’s rivals Inter and Napoli are both in the mix.

We have also learned about interest from Nottingham Forest, and Chelsea and Aston Villa have returned to the fray after previously turning their backs when they felt Spurs were not interested in negotiating.

Forest, for their part, are willing to guarantee Bergvall good minutes, and that’s what he wants from his next club.

None of Milan’s midfield are valued as highly as the Spurs man, so they, too, might well be able to offer the Swede the minutes he wants.

Bergvall twice played against Amorim’s United during his time at Tottenham and was on the winning side in both of those games, so the boss now wanting him at Milan is not a surprise.

But with a lot of interest from multiple clubs, whether or not he’ll be able to bring him in at his new club remains to be seen.

We understand that West Ham want £80million for the 21-year-old Portugal international midfielder.

It has been reported in the Spanish media that Fernandes prefers Tottenham to Madrid, who have now decided to go all out for Chelsea and Argentina international midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

According to AS, a Real Madrid-leaning Spanish publication, ‘after an initial inquiry, the deal for Mateus Fernandes has been ruled out because the 21-year-old prefers to go to Tottenham, where he believes he has more opportunities to develop’.

‘Enzo Fernández (25 years old) is the chosen one for the midfield’, according to the report.

Our transfer insider, Graeme Bailey, has long reported Madrid’s desire to sign Fernandez from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Sources have told us that Madrid are willing to offer two players in exchange for Fernandez, along with cash.

There have been multiple reports in the Spanish media in recent days that Fernandez is ready to leave Chelsea for Madrid and already has a deal in place with Los Blancos.

AS has followed the trend, claiming that Fernandez ‘is determined to sign for Real Madrid’.

Regarding how former Tottenham manager Mourinho views Fernandez, the report has noted: ‘The Portuguese manager sees Enzo as the perfect midfielder for his project, given his ability to cover ground, his leadership on and off the pitch, and his playmaking ability to orchestrate the team’s attack.

‘He’s the box-to-box midfielder he needs.’
