Arne Slot admits he has a bad ‘gut feeling’ about Alexander Isak’s injury after Liverpool’s battling 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, while goalkeeper Alisson was in a much more positive frame of mind when it comes to how long the Swedish striker could be sidelined.

The home side were reduced to 10 men in the first half with Xavi Simons’ red card and Liverpool had to wait until the 56th minute to open the scoring through substitute Isak, although it came at a potentially massive loss.

After meeting Florian Wirtz’s pass, Liverpool frontman Isak was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Micky van de Ven as he finished empathically past Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Isak received treatment on the pitch and was then replaced by Jeremie Frimpong, before Liverpool went on to double their lead through Hugo Ekitike before Richarlison’s goal in the 83rd minute set up a nervy finish for Slot’s side.

“I don’t have any news on him,” Slot said of Isak after Liverpool’s win. “But if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn’t come back on the pitch, and also doesn’t try to come back, which Conor Bradley for example did but I had to take him out as well because he couldn’t go on, but if a player doesn’t try to come back that’s usually not a good thing.

“But I cannot say anything more than that, that is just gut feeling, nothing medical.”

Asked if Isak had his own feeling about his injury, Slot replied: “Haven’t spoken to him about that yet.

“It’s a good thing he scored, a good goal, assisted by Florian Wirtz, I said last week players are getting better, the team is getting better, again, wasn’t perfect today, especially in the last 10 minutes but in the meantime we pick up points and I see the team developing in a way I’d like to see.”

In his post-match interview, Alisson was at least more upbeat on Isak’s injury.

“I think he will be okay,” Alisson told Stadium Astro.

“Happy for him for scoring the goal but, of course, we don’t want him to be injured.

“Hopefully it’s just a knock, nothing too serious because he can help our team so much with his quality.”

Slot happy to avoid Elland Road repeat

Meanwhile, Slot admitted to being relieved at getting over the line in north London, especially given how much nine-man Tottenham were pushing for an unlikely equaliser late in the match.

The victory came just a fortnight after the Reds threw away 2-0 and 3-2 leads at Elland Road against Leeds, who grabbed a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser.

And, when speaking on having the same feeling as Elland Road, Slot added: “It was eleven v eleven there but we had nine minutes added again there.

“It’s unbelievable if you play against nine men that I would not be surprised if for the nine minutes they had the ball for eight and half. That is not what you expect and maybe that tells you where we are in this season.

“We need a few more wins to get a bit more comfortable with setbacks. The thing that keeps in your mind is the last ten minutes but there was a lot more to like in the first 80-90 minutes.”

Emery’s side are understood to have struck a deal worth an initial £8.7m, plus a further £1.8m in performance-related add-ons for Alysson. Gremio will also claim a 10% cut of any future deal, with the two clubs expected to complete the formalities of the 19-year-old’s transfer early in the January window.

Furthermore, we understand Villa are also looking into a possible move for Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson, though sources understand a move to Crystal Palace looks the most likely move for the Wales winger at this stage. Nonetheles, the arrival of the Brazilian could well see Sancho finding his already limited game time likely depleted further.

Asked about the support from the board, he continued: “I feel supported. I’ve done that the whole time.

“This is not a quick fix. This will take time. That’s not to say that we’re not going to do everything we can to beat Liverpool.

“I’m very comfortable and confident that I will, how can I say, fix it, but just to make sure it’s not me. When this club comes out on top, there will be a lot of good people working together, aligned at the same time through the years.

The Red Devils do have the funds to meet his exit clause, despite reports to the contrary.

Sources confirmed to us on December 11 that Bournemouth have identified FC Basel’s Philip Otele as a potential replacement for Semenyo.

The Spurs boss appears to go from game to game not actually knowing what his best midfield make-up is, constantly chopping and changing the likes of Bayern loanee Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Sarr, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

Tottenham once again found themselves overpowered and out-worked by Nottingham Forest in the middle of the park during last weekend’s demoralising 3-0 defeat at The City Ground.

It’s not the first time that has happened and it won’t be the last, unless there are significant upgrades brought in either in January or next summer.

And now a fresh report from Spain claims that Spurs are ready to take advantage of a bust-up between Bayern and one of their top stars, Leon Goretzka.

Goretzka’s role with the reigning Bundesliga champions has lessened since the arrival of Vincent Kompany as Bayern boss, with the 30-year-old making just 26 league appearances last season.

While he has started in 11 of his 13 Bundesliga appearances this term, his substitution against Mainz last Sunday was very telling when it comes to a potential January exit.

Goretzka was seen to be visibly upset at being hauled off with 30 minutes to go and his side trailing 2-1, making no attempt to hide his frustration.

The midfielder has since deleted all of the Bayern pictures from his social media, which has been interpreted in Germany as a sign that he wants a ‘clear break’ from the club he has been at since 2018.

As a result of that fallout, dubious Spanish outlet Fichajes states Tottenham are ‘one of the best-positioned teams’ to sign Goretzka, although there are other English sides in the mix, namely Nottingham Forest and West Ham.

There’s no mention over whether the move would be a loan deal or a permanent one, although Transfermarkt currently is Goretzka valued at just €22m (£19m / $26m), given that he is out of contract next summer.

What Goretzka would bring to Tottenham

A move to Spurs would actually see the midfielder reunite with Joao Palhinha, with whom he played alongside seven times in Germany for Bayern.

Palhinha is currently on loan at Tottenham and there had been expectation that the club would trigger his buy clause for £27m, when he was a standout performer at the start of the campaign. However, the Portugal international has been on the bench more often of late, so there must surely be doubts over that deal now.

Bringing Goretzka on board, though, would give Frank the box-to-box midfielder that it was hoped Bentancur would be this season, only for the Uruguay star to bitterly disappoint.

The Bayern star is a dynamic player known for driving runs from midfield, late runs into the box and his finishing ability. He also has a wide passing range and is a strong presser, the latter of which is currently missing from the Spurs engine room.

In 286 outings for the Bavarian outfit, Goretzka has scored 46 goals and laid on 48 more, and there is no doubting that he would significantly upgrade the current Tottenham midfield were he to sign.

However, the biggest concern is the source of the article from which the links have come, with Fichajes known to speculate fairly wildly at times. Although Tottenham fans will be hoping there is some truth in a deal that would be a big one for the club.

Antoine Semenyo is one of the most in-demand players ahead of the January transfer window – but his various suitors have different ideas of how they’d use him were they to win the race for his hotly-contested signature.

As one of the leading scorers in the Premier League this season, Semenyo is in the kind of form that may render the contract extension he signed with Bournemouth in the summer inconsequential. The side from the south coast face an uphill battle to keep their talisman as he attracts interest from higher up the table.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all continue to be linked with Semenyo, but he’d fit in differently at each destination.

So, where would he be most likely to play for each of his suitors?

Liverpool – right winger

Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is well aware of Semenyo given their shared past at Bournemouth, where the Ghana international has made a name for himself on either flank.

And if he was to lure him to Liverpool too, Semenyo could fit in on either side. Where he plays most frequently will largely depend on what happens with Mohamed Salah in January.

If Salah leaves, having spoken out against the club earlier this month, then Semenyo could be primed to take over his spot on the right wing.

But if Salah stays, having been restored to the squad for Liverpool’s last game before he headed off for the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, then Semenyo would have to target Cody Gakpo’s place on the left wing instead.

The good news for Liverpool is that sources understand it is a move to Anfield which the 25-year-old fancies above all others.

Manchester City – right winger

Manchester City’s current options on the wings include Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb and summer signing Rayan Cherki.

From that crop of players, Doku and Savinho are both more effective on the left-hand side, while Foden and Cherki are both capable of playing more centrally.

Therefore, Semenyo would seem best placed to challenge for a place on the right wing if he was to end up at the Etihad Stadium, where he would be a more proven option than Bobb.

Pep Guardiola is known to be flexible with how he deploys his players, but the right wing would seem to be the best starting point for Semenyo at City – unless the manager would prefer to put him on the left to keep Cherki or Foden on the right.

Manchester United – left wing-back

In an attempt to get the most out of Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, Manchester United overhauled their attack in the summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to support new striker Benjamin Sesko.

All three will have reasonable expectations of continuing to start regularly, which leads to the prospect of Semenyo having to play at wing-back if he joins United.

It’s a role they believe he can fulfil as they look to add a greater attacking threat from out wide, although taking on more defensive responsibilities may hamper his output.

Naturally right-footed, Semenyo could play as a left-sided wing-back for United, still with a focus on cutting in and shooting as opposed to crossing (although he does have decent ability on his weaker foot to be able to do so when needed).

Tottenham – left winger

One of Tottenham’s main priorities to strengthen next, clear since the last transfer window closed, is the left wing position.

Spurs need to enhance their attacking threat and securing a more explosive option on the left wing would benefit them, rather than using a more technical player like Xavi Simons there.

Allowing him freedom to cut inside and create chances, it could well be the most natural role for Semenyo. However, Spurs aren’t faring that much better than his current side at present.
