Danny Murphy has exclusively told TEAMtalk why Tottenham should not be too concerned over losing Cristian Romero this summer, after landing a “wonderful footballer” in Marcos Senesi, while he also explains why Roberto De Zerbi’s side can challenge for Europe again next season.

The north London outfit are undergoing a defensive revamp under the Italian after maintaining their Premier League status on the final day of the 2025/26 season.

Andy Robertson has arrived on a free transfer from Liverpool, with Senesi doing likewise after his contract at Bournemouth came to an end. Add Jan Paul van Hecke to that mix, assuming Tottenham are able to get a deal over the line for the Brighton man, and De Zerbi’s defence could have a completely different look to it once the new campaign gets underway.

And Murphy, who spent two seasons at Spurs in the mid-2000s, is particularly impressed with the capture of Senesi and believes it can offset the loss of Romero as the Argentine continues to be heavily linked with a switch to Spain.

“I think as an overall defender, Romero probably has better qualities with his athleticism and his aerial prowess, but Senesi is a more reliable player,” Murphy told TEAMtalk in association with NetBet.

“He plays more games, is a lot more disciplined, he’s calm, he’s a wonderful footballer. Senesi’s distribution from the back is up there with the best in the Premier League.

“If you watch him as much as I have, you’ll see his passing through the lines is phenomenal, he’s a wonderful footballer and Tottenham fans will see those aspects of him.

“He maybe lacks a yard, and he’s not quite as athletic as Romero, but he’s different. You need some pace and physicality alongside Senesi really. I’m not saying he’s slow but in terms of the Premier League, if you want to press and go after teams, you wouldn’t leave him isolated, he’d need some help alongside him with some pace.

“He’s a different player to Romero but he’s certainly a good addition and they should be delighted they’ve got him.”

Murphy says Spurs can challenge for Europe under De Zerbi

Murphy, meanwhile, is confident that his old club will be a long way from the back-to-back 17th-placed finishes of the last two seasons after having a full pre-season of De Zerbi under their belts.

He added: “Realistically, top eight should be really attainable, but I’d imagine he’d be thinking a bit above that though, maybe top six, as that would guarantee proper European football.

“I think Spurs’ capability and budget, if they spend well in the summer, should put them in that conversation. When you look at what Bournemouth, Brentford and Sunderland did this season, Tottenham should be in there, and I think they will.

“I think he [Roberto de Zerbi] is a terrific coach, he’s very high intensity and he demands a lot from his players, and because of the discontent around the last two seasons and the fans voicing that so clearly and for so long now, I would be absolutely amazed if Tottenham didn’t go really big this summer and try to change that squad around by bringing in 5 or 6 players.

“I sense a feel-good factor at Tottenham at the beginning of the season, I think they’ll get right behind the manager, and I think top eight or top six is a realistic target for them.”

Tottenham have made an audacious play to divert a hugely in-demand midfielder away from Manchester United and down to north London, according to a trusted source.

Ederson will become Man Utd’s first midfield signing of the summer, though the Brazilian won’t be the last. Two more readymade additions are wanted, and two big names can be crossed off the list.

Man Utd have pulled out of the race to sign Elliot Anderson after baulking at Nottingham Forest’s gargantuan asking price of £120m-plus in guaranteed payments.

Tottenham make enquiry for Mateus Fernandes

Reporting on The Last Word on Spurs podcast, Jacobs stated: “They’re (Tottenham) looking at the market with various names.

“They made an enquiry for Mateus Fernandes, even though the direction of travel there is Manchester United or PSG.

“Real Madrid could even enter that race, but he was another player that they looked at.

“Funny, because Tottenham and West Ham just don’t do that much business ever, and yet we might get a flurry now, because the reports, of which I also was one of them, around Crysencio Summerville and Tottenham were legitimate, even though West Ham tried to deny it at the time.”

As alluded to, the overwhelming expectation is Fernandes will not join Spurs despite their audacious hijack attempt. Instead, a switch to Man Utd is a far likelier outcome.

Our insider, Fraser Fletcher, brought news on Monday of Real Madrid establishing contact over the move.

However, Fernandes is understood to favour Man Utd above all others, and that includes Real Madrid and back-to-back Champions League winners, PSG.

Agreeing personal terms should not be a problem, and TEAMtalk understands Man Utd are now ready to launch their first official bid for the midfielder.

Tottenham are readying a formal offer to sign Savinho from Manchester City after the double green light was granted, with the Brazilian the biggest part of a triple coup worth around £135m, according to reports.

Spurs attempted to sign Brazilian winger Savinho last summer, and even launched two bids, the biggest of which was worth €80m / £70m, according to reports at that time.

Savinho was open to the switch, though after Man City failed to land Rodrygo from Real Madrid, they blocked Savinho’s exit.

The 22-year-old would go on to sign a new deal at the Etihad, though over the course of the 2025/26 campaign, playing time proved elusive.

As such, his future is once again in the spotlight and the difference this time around is Man City have approved his departure.

Our own sources at TEAMtalk have confirmed as much, and with Savinho again ready to say yes to Tottenham, the double green light has been granted.

A recent report from the Daily Mail claimed Spurs were ‘advancing’ in club-to-club discussions with their counterparts at City.

And per the latest from Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham are now prepared to ‘formalise’ their interest by launching an official bid.

Once tabled, the reporter claimed talks between the two sides are ‘expected to progress quickly’.

Tottenham to make official bid for Savinho

“Tottenham are expected to formalise their interest in the Brazilian with an offer in the coming weeks,” added O’Rourke.

“Savinho is interested in making a move to north London as well. So there’s a willingness from Tottenham, and a willingness from Savinho as well to do a deal.

“I don’t think City would stand in his way if they do get a good offer for the winger this summer.

“There’s a willingness from all parties to get a deal done here, so I would expect things to move sooner rather than later, and Tottenham are confident that they can get a deal done for Savinho.”

Tottenham working on Jan Paul van Hecke and Joao Palhinha deals

Aside from Savinho, Spurs also intend to sign Jan Paul van Hecke and Joao Palhinha.

The former has already been the subject of two bids worth £40m and £50m respectively. A third bid worth around £55m is anticipated, and there’s a belief at Spurs that Brighton will accept. Van Hecke has already agreed personal terms with Tottenham.

A separate deal under discussion between the two clubs involves Luka Vuskovic.

Brighton have seen two bids turned down for the highly-rated Croatian, and just as Spurs will do with Van Hecke, Brighton intend to make what they hope will be a decisive third offer.

Vuskovic is more than willing to join Brighton where he believes he’ll play regularly under Fabian Hurzeler.

The third major signing Tottenham plan to make is the permanent return of loanee, Joao Palhinha.

The Portuguese was a bright spark in a difficult campaign in north London, and on the final day, scored the crucial goal that secured Tottenham’s Premier League safety.

Spurs hold an option to buy from Bayern Munich worth €30m / £26m, but are renegotiating a smaller fee with the German giants.

If Palhinha were to arrive for around £20m, for example, the triple coup with Van Hecke (£55m) and Savinho *£60m) would cost Spurs approximately £135m.

Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have already been safely banked without having to pay transfers fees given that pair joined via free agency.

Roberto De Zerbi has no intention of sanctioning Destiny Udogie’s departure this summer, with TEAMtalk understanding Tottenham have made it clear they are in no hurry to entertain offers despite growing interest from Italy.

The 23-year-old has emerged as a target for both Juventus and Fiorentina, with sources confirming enquiries have been made regarding his availability ahead of the new season.

However, Tottenham’s position remains firm and TEAMtalk understands De Zerbi has been hugely impressed by Udogie since arriving in North London and regards the Italian as an important part of his plans moving forward.

Indeed, the Spurs boss wasted little time in showing his faith in the defender. Similar to fellow full-back Pedro Porro, who has since been rewarded with a new contract, Udogie was immediately restored to the starting line-up under De Zerbi.

The Italy international started every match under the former Brighton manager apart from Tottenham’s trip to Wolves and produced a series of performances that further strengthened his standing within the squad.

Sources have told TEAMtalk that De Zerbi has informed Tottenham’s hierarchy that he is extremely happy with Udogie’s development and sees him as a key component of his long-term project.

As a result, the club are resisting attempts to lure him back to Serie A.

De Zerbi ‘delighted’ with Spurs full-back options

Tottenham’s confidence in their left-back options has actually increased this summer following the arrival of Andy Robertson.

TEAMtalk understands De Zerbi is delighted with the depth now available to him across both full-back positions.

With Robertson and Udogie competing on the left, and Pedro Porro alongside Djed Spence on the right, the Italian coach believes he has one of the strongest collections of full-backs in the Premier League.

That strength in depth has not altered Spurs’ stance on Udogie’s future.

Sources indicate Tottenham have informed intermediaries that it would take an offer in the region of £50million before they would even begin to reconsider their position.

Even then, there is little expectation inside the club that a deal will materialise.

Instead, TEAMtalk understands discussions have already taken place internally regarding the possibility of opening talks with Udogie over an improved contract in the near future.

Such a move would underline Tottenham’s commitment to the defender and further demonstrate how highly he is regarded by De Zerbi and the club’s hierarchy.

While Juventus and Fiorentina continue to monitor the situation, all indications suggest Tottenham view Udogie as a player to build around rather than cash in on.

With De Zerbi fully convinced by the Italian’s qualities and Spurs actively considering a new deal, the message coming out of North London is clear: Udogie is going nowhere unless an extraordinary offer arrives.

Tottenham Hotspur are continuing their summer squad overhaul and, while much of the focus has been on new signings and contract renewals, TEAMtalk understands the club are also working hard behind the scenes to secure a departure for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The Italy international’s future has been the subject of increasing speculation in recent months, and sources have confirmed that Tottenham are actively exploring options for the 29-year-old as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes his squad.

Juventus are actively searching for a new number one after failing to secure their preferred target.

Sources have informed TEAMtalk that the Turin giants had reached an agreement in principle with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker over personal terms. However, the move collapsed after Liverpool made it clear they would not sanction the Brazilian’s departure.

Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez has also been discussed internally, but his salary expectations are understood to be even higher than Alisson’s, making a deal increasingly difficult to complete.

As a result, Vicario has moved firmly into Juventus’ thinking.

The goalkeeper’s representatives have already made it known that a move to Turin would be extremely attractive to the player, who is keen to return to Serie A at the right club.

However, Juventus are no longer alone in the race as Napoli have emerged as serious contenders and TEAMtalk understands contacts have already taken place as the reigning Italian champions prepare for significant changes between the posts.

Sources indicate Napoli are ready to move on from both Alex Meret and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic this summer, with Vicario viewed as a strong candidate to become the club’s next long-term number one.

De Zerbi wants Verbruggen to replace Vicario in goal – here’s why

The growing interest from Italy is exactly the scenario Tottenham had hoped for, and TEAMtalk understands Spurs are actively planning for life without Vicario as De Zerbi evaluates his goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign.

The Italian coach was encouraged by the performances of Antonin Kinsky, who successfully re-established himself within the squad last season and remains highly regarded internally.

Nevertheless, sources indicate De Zerbi wants an upgrade in the position if the right opportunity presents itself.

One player we can confirm remains very high on Tottenham’s wishlist is Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

TEAMtalk understands De Zerbi would welcome the chance to reunite with the Netherlands’ World Cup star following their successful spell together on the south coast, with the Italian viewing him as both an ideal fit for the style of football he wants Spurs to play and as a proven performer at Premier League level.

Whether Tottenham can secure a deal for Verbruggen remains to be seen – and they are looking at other options, including James Trafford this summer.

Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin has also been touted as an option, though sources are yet to confirm if reported interest from Spurs is indeed genuine.

But what we can say with increasing clarity is that Vicario’s future is likely to be away from North London, and the 29-year-old looks highly likely to have played his final game for the club, and will return to his homeland after three seasons and 117 appearances during a largely turbulent time in N17.

De Zerbi is also keen to add another wide attacker to his ranks this summer. While Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has been touted as a £60m target, those links have since been played down and branded as ‘nonsense’ in an effort to accelerate a planned raid on Manchester City for an alternative.

Dusan Vlahovic’s wage demands are not proving a stumbling block for his Premier League admirers, TEAMtalk can reveal, with Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle United all maintaining an interest in the Serbian striker’s situation.

The 26-year-old is one of the standout free agents currently available and continues to attract significant attention across Europe following his departure from Juventus.

TEAMtalk previously revealed that intermediaries have been actively sounding out potential destinations for Vlahovic and sources have now confirmed that a move to England remains firmly on the agenda.

Contrary to some suggestions, it is not the striker’s salary expectations that are creating complications.

TEAMtalk understands Vlahovic, who has notched 120 goals in 303 games across his senior career, is seeking a contract worth around £8million per year, equivalent to roughly £150,000 per week. For clubs operating at the top end of the Premier League, those figures are not considered prohibitive.

Instead, sources indicate it is the wider financial package surrounding any deal that has caused some hesitation.

Substantial signing-on bonuses and agent fees are understood to be significantly increasing the overall cost of securing the striker’s signature, pushing the deal beyond the comfort zone of some interested clubs.

Indeed, those financial considerations were among the factors behind Juventus‘ decision to step away from negotiations over a fresh agreement.

However, the situation in Turin has taken a fresh twist.

Juventus to make one last push to retain Vlahovic

The Serie A giants have appointed former Sassuolo chief Giovanni Carnevali as their new general manager following the departure of Damien Comolli, and TEAMtalk understands the experienced executive is open to reopening discussions with Vlahovic.

Sources indicate Carnevali has made it clear he would be willing to revisit talks in an attempt to keep the striker at the club.

Yet with little indication that Vlahovic is prepared to lower his demands, the expectation remains that he will move on.

That has left a host of clubs monitoring developments closely.

TEAMtalk understands Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle have all been spoken to regarding the striker’s availability, while virtually every major Premier League club has been contacted over the past few months.

The same applies across Europe, where a number of elite sides have also explored the possibility of signing the Serbia international.

Atletico Madrid are among the clubs to have expressed an interest, but sources have indicated one of the most aggressive pursuits is currently coming from Turkey.

TEAMtalk understands Besiktas are pushing hard to secure Vlahovic and are prepared to meet his financial expectations. The Istanbul club are believed to be willing to offer a lucrative two-year contract, a proposal that is viewed as a genuine option by those close to the player.

While no final decision has been made, the race for Vlahovic is beginning to intensify.

Premier League clubs remain attracted by the opportunity to sign a proven international striker without paying a transfer fee, but the overall financial package means any deal will still require a significant commitment.

For now, England remains a realistic destination, Juventus have not entirely given up hope, and Besiktas are making a serious push of their own.

Trusted insider Ben Jacobs has revealed Tottenham Hotspur are potentially ready to do battle with two Premier League rivals for a new striker signing this summer, in a deal that would represent rare transfer business for the club.

Having already started to revamp the Spurs backline with the additions of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers, along with the expected signing of Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke, De Zerbi is expected to do likewise with a faltering attack.

Tottenham scored just 48 goals in their 38 Premier League outings last season as they only fended off the threat of relegation on the final day of the season, with top strikers Richarlison and Dominic Solanke only netting 14 times between them.

Brazil international actually scored 11 of those 14 to finish as the club’s top scorer ahead of the injury-prone Solanke, but there is a strong feeling the former will be sold this summer and an upgrade brought in, as De Zerbi looks for more consistency from his main No.9.

Prolific marksmen Dusan Vlahovic and Serhou Guirassy continue to be linked with a switch to north London and would both be strong additions to De Zerbi’s starting XI. Indeed, a recent report appeared to open the door to a Spurs move for Dortmund star Guirassy, who has scored 56 goals across the last two seasons.

However, Jacobs has now indicated that, as well as still trying to secure a deal for Manchester City winger Savinho, Spurs are firmly on the hunt for another striker and a former target could be back on their radar.

Tottenham battling rivals for rare Chelsea deal

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel on Sunday night, Jacobs revealed that rare transfer business with bitter rivals Chelsea star Liam Delap could be one to watch this summer, despite the fact that the former Ipswich frontman still wants to fight for his spot at Stamford Bridge.

Delap, who largely played second fiddle to Joao Pedro for a starting role this past season, scored just two goals in 41 games in all competitions for the Blues during the 2025/26 campaign.

Hardly a ringing endorsement for a team that needs goals from their central striker, but Delap was firmly on Tottenham’s radar before he moved to Stamford Bridge in a £30m switch last summer, and Jacobs thinks a switch across the capital could be a possibility.

Indeed, the reporter also indicated that Newcastle and Everton will also be in the running for 23-year-old, should new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso decide Delap is surplus to requirements.

Discussing the player’s future, Jacobs said: “I think that Liam Delap could be one to watch from Chelsea, another club that Tottenham wouldn’t normally do too much business with.

“Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham, the three clubs that like Delap. Before we can clarify whether anything is going to develop there, Delap wants to stay and fight for his place, so he’s going to understand where he is in this pecking order, with Joao Pedro number one under Xabi Alonso, who is going to be the number two striker?

“Is it still going to be Delap? Is it alternatively going to be Nico Jackson, who’s coming back from a loan spell at Bayern? I think unlikely, but Jackson wants pre-season to see if he can change the new manager’s mind.

“Once all that falls into place, if Delap is available on the market, Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham are the three Premier League clubs I’m hearing.”

While it would be a gamble bringing in another striker who struggled for goals last season, Delap was hardly given a fair crack of the whip at Chelsea, and if a cut-price fee could be agreed, it could be one that works out for all parties.

However, from Tottenham’s perspective, Delap would have to be in addition to a frontman of the likes of Vlahovic or Guirassy, if the club are to have any chance of competing for the European spots again in 2026/27.

Tottenham insider John Wenham has suggested the club’s links with a Liverpool forward are “nonsense” to put pressure on Manchester City for another star.

After finishing 17th in the Premier League on the final day of last season, Spurs are putting in measures to ensure they aren’t in danger of the drop again. The signing of Marcos Senesi has strengthened the back line and it seems evident they also want reinforcements in the attack.

This summer, interest in City winger Savinho, who Tottenham wanted to sign in January, has cropped back up, though alongside him, there’s said to be interest in Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.

A recent report suggested they were preparing a bid, but Wenham thinks it’s all smoke and mirrors.

He told Tottenham News: “These Gakpo links are surely nonsense. You’d imagine it’s to maybe up the ante on Man City and Savinho.”

Tottenham are already believed to have the green light to sign Savinho from City, with discussions ongoing over a £60million deal.

Tottenham aware of Gakpo situation

As such, if City see Spurs as being interested in another winger, there could be a chance that they allow Savinho to go for under that price tag in order to ensure a sale.

Whether Tottenham are in fact interested in Gakpo is not clear.

TEAMtalk has learned that they are one of a number of clubs who are aware of the Liverpool forward’s situation. Being informed and being interested are different things, though.

Alongside Spurs in being informed of developments surrounding Gakpo are Aston Villa, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and RB Leipzig, while Bayern Munich remain interested after previously going after the Dutchman.

Gakpo is unhappy about the prospect of being behind Rio Ngumoha in the pecking order, leading to clubs being sounded out for him.

A Premier League star is believed to be ‘determined’ to join the north London club, where the latest bid is expected to be ‘imminent.’

Spurs have already signed two defenders this summer and are on the hunt for one more. Indeed, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have joined and Roberto De Zerbi wants the third addition to be his former Brighton man Jan Paul van Hecke.

Tottenham have so far bid £40million and £50million for the Dutchman and are expected to raise that to £55million.

Per Football Insider, Van Hecke is ‘determined’ to join the north London club, where the next bid should be imminent.

Insider Pete O’Rourke said: “Spurs will come back with a slightly improved offer of around £55m for Van Hecke.

“Brighton turned down the first two offers because they want to make as much money as they can, but they’re not in the strongest position here.

“There’s a confidence that Tottenham can get this deal over the line because the player is interested in making that move to Tottenham as well and to work again with Roberto De Zerbi.

“There is plenty of optimism on Tottenham’s side and on the player’s side that a deal can be reached which is encouraging for Spurs that he wants to make the move. So I expect that third bid for Van Hecke will be pretty imminent.”

Tottenham expect to sign Van Hecke

TEAMtalk is aware Van Hecke has told Brighton of his desire to reunite with former boss De Zerbi at Spurs.

As a result of that desire, the Dutchman has already agreed personal terms in principle with the north London club.

Sources have stated that negotiations between the two clubs over the deal are ongoing, and it is seen as “very likely” to be done.

Van Hecke is now the priority target for Tottenham, and interest in him comes amid Brighton interest in the club’s own centre-back, Luka Vuskovic.

Spurs don’t want to be out of pocket if both moves happen, valuing their young defender at £60million.

A European giant has made it easier for Tottenham to re-sign a star from them after dropping his transfer fee, which a rival still won’t match.

Spurs are putting in work to strengthen their squad after they came dangerously close to being relegated from the Premier League last season. They have already signed defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, while Pedro Porro has reportedly signed a new contract.

There are also moves being made in the midfield and the attack. In the final third, progress is being made to sign Manchester City forward Savinho, while they’re known to be eager to bring Joao Palhinha back.

The midfielder scored crucial goals against Wolves and Everton to keep Tottenham up, and the club see him as a useful re-addition to the squad, but for below the £26million option to buy from Bayern Munich.

They’re in luck, then, as Correio de Manha reports Bayern are ready to drop that to €25million (£21.5m).
