Description

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur have reached a ‘total agreement’ with a rival Premier League club as they close in on a major signing.

This summer is important for Spurs, who need to make several statement signings ahead of Thomas Frank‘s first game in charge after they finished 17th in the Premier League in 2024/25.

Injuries marred Tottenham‘s final season under Ange Postecoglou, but their performances in the Premier League were far from good enough as they reached an embarrassing new low.

Still, they managed to salvage a great positive from an otherwise disastrous season, ending their trophy drought by beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.

This victory also secured Champions League qualification and a huge cash injection, which is a huge boost for Frank and Tottenham’s recruitment team as they oversee a significant squad overhaul.

Spurs are currently ninth in our ranking of this summer’s biggest spenders in Europe, but they will move up a few places once their deal for Mohammed Kudus is completed.

Reports in recent weeks have indicated that the north London side are prioritising a new attacking midfielder and have turned their attention to Kudus from Crystal Palace standout Eberechi Eze.

Recent reports have suggested that they have gradually been getting closer to Kudus, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealing on Wednesday evening that they have a deal in place with West Ham United amid a ‘total agreement’.

Ornstein confirmed: ‘Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United for a fee of around £55million ($74.7m).

‘A medical is scheduled to take place on Thursday ahead of Kudus signing a six-year contract at the north London club.’

Spurs will not stop here as they are also working on a deal to reunite Frank with Brentford forward Yoane Wissa as they are ‘moving’ to sign him.

BBC reporter Sami Mokbel said: ‘Tottenham moving for Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa, who is understood to be open to a move. #THFC weighing up financials attached to the deal.’

Journalist Ben Jacobs has since revealed Wissa’s stance on a move to Spurs, insisting the Brentford star has given the green light for the Premier League giants to pursue him this summer.

Jacobs tweeted: ‘Spurs are weighing up a move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. Move driven by Thomas Frank. Wissa is keen on a move.

‘Brentford don’t want to lose Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo in the same window.’

Description

BBC journalist Sami Mokbel has revealed that Tottenham are now ‘moving’ to beat Newcastle United to the signing of Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa.

Spurs replaced Ange Postecoglou with Brentford head coach Thomas Frank last month after the north London club could only finish 17th in the Premier League, despite winning the Europa League in the process.

Tottenham have been linked with moves for some of Frank’s former players at Brentford with Spurs immediately credited with an interest in hijacking Manchester United’s move for Bryan Mbeumo.

And now another of Frank’s stars at Brentford, Wissa, is apparently attracting interest from Tottenham with BBC Sport journalist Mokbel revealed Spurs’ plan.

Mokbel wrote on X on Wednesday afternoon: ‘Tottenham moving for Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa, who is understood to be open to a move. #THFC weighing up financials attached to the deal.’

Newcastle have also been credited with interest in Wissa – who contributed 19 goals and four assists in the Premier League last season – with the Brentford forward one name who has ‘been discussed’ at St James’ Park.

READ: Transfer rumour power ranking: Liverpool in for Barcelona duo, Chelsea to sell goalkeeper

Writing in his Daily Mail column on Tuesday, Craig Hope said: ‘Here are two new names who I understand have been discussed in the past fortnight – Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

‘The problem is, they would both be fairly costly and, given their age (Wissa is 28 and Watkins is 29), there is little resale value. Would Watkins, in a World Cup year, want to join a club where Isak is No 1?

‘That is the conversation Newcastle need to have with all targets in this department. You would hope that the lure of the Champions League, working under Eddie Howe and the promise of game-time given the sheer volume of game-time would give Newcastle a chance of persuading those players to join.

‘I would keep a close eye on the Wissa situation. I know he has admirers within St James’ Park and is also versatile enough to play on the wing.’

But Brentford director of football Phil Giles is relaxed on the futures of Wissa and Mbeumo, he told BBC Sport in May: “I have a lot of insight but that doesn’t mean I will talk about it!

“No, in general, if I was looking at a striker or a wide player as another club then they have to be on a shortlist, you would imagine. But the number of clubs that can sign them is a small number worldwide so time will tell if a club has that need or requirement. At the moment, we are pretty relaxed.”

When asked if they can be retained by offering new contracts: “Yes, what I’d say is there is always a very good chance of players staying. In an ideal world, there is always a chance we can keep our best players, that’s the dream.

“When we were a Championship club, we had Ollie Watkins, he signed a contract with us at one point. We said we would convert him from a wide player to a striker – we did that and he was successful – and if we didn’t get promoted we would look to sell him.

“We were proactive to go out and sell him, we made a promise to him and we needed cash at that time because it was Covid. But now we are a Premier League club we don’t need to sell Wissa, Mbeumo and others.

“There is more chance that a player will stay for that reason but if a big club makes a really good offer for our players then we have to look at it. We need to be good sellers, then use the money to invest wisely.”

Ange Postecoglou 'contacted' over 'extraordinary' Premier League return after Spurs sack - Football365
Description

Ange Postecoglou held ‘informal discussions’ with a Premier League club but ‘was not interviewed’ after leaving Tottenham Hotspur last month.

The former Celtic boss was sacked by Spurs exactly two years after his appointment, despite leading them to Europa League glory and ending a 17-year trophy drought.

His dismissal ultimately came down to Spurs’ woeful Premier League form, with 22 defeats from 38 matches consigning them to a 17th-place finish.

Despite that, the north Londoners will play Champions League football next season under new head coach Thomas Frank.

Frank, 51, left Brentford after seven years in charge to replace Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Brentford’s search for a successor concluded on June 27 with the in-house appointment of former Republic of Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews, who stepped up from his role as a set-piece coach.

The Bees followed the same internal path they took when Dean Smith left for Aston Villa and Frank was promoted, though they did consider bringing in someone from outside.

According to The Athletic, one of the managers they considered was Postecoglou.

The report, from Jay Harris, claims there was potential for ‘an extraordinary sequence of events and effectively a job swap’, but Brentford director of football Phil Giles and Postecoglou ‘agreed moving forward was not the best option’ after ‘informal discussions’.

Brentford are said to have ‘contacted’ Postecoglou and viewed him as a candidate to replace club legend Frank.

Before settling on Andrews, the club also considered former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli, who has since joined FC Porto.

Andrews was ultimately given a three-year contract, with his ‘familiarity with the squad and strong presentation’ proving decisive.

Giles did admit, however, that there is a risk in appointing a first-time head coach.

“There’s always going to be some degree of risk,” he said.

“It’s more risky to go and get a coach we don’t know from a club where the environment might be different or maybe people around them made them successful. This is actually quite a low-risk appointment because I know how good Keith is.”

Despite being sacked, Postecoglou left Spurs with his head held high after guiding the club to their first major trophy in nearly two decades.

And he did so having backed himself to deliver silverware in his second season — something he made perfectly clear he would do and always does last September.

“I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year,” the Australian said following a defeat to Arsenal.

“Nothing’s changed. I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

According to reports, one player is ‘likely’ to be ‘sacrificed’ at Tottenham Hotspur this summer, while another is ‘close’ to a move to a European giant.

Spurs are among this summer’s biggest spenders in Europe, investing around £60m on signings following the arrival of Thomas Frank to replace Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham still have plenty to do this summer as upgrades are required in most positions after they finished 17th in the Premier League last season.

The north London outfit at least ended the campaign on a high as they won the Europe League to end their trophy drought and claim a spot in the Champions League.

This also boosts Tottenham’s budget and their current priority is to sign Mohammed Kudus as they stepped up their interest in the West Ham star last week.

READ: Manchester United and Spurs in £125m race to complete biggest steps down in transfer history

Over the weekend, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed Kudus has already ‘said yes’ to a move to Spurs.

Romano tweeted: ‘Understand Mohammed Kudus is not talking to any other club at this stage: he wants Tottenham move. Kudus already said yes to Spurs project and club to club talks with West Ham will continue soon. Clear intention is to join Spurs. #THFC.’

Now, Football Insider claim Richarlison is ‘likely to be sacrificed’ if ‘Spurs manage to land Kudus’.

Richarlison was only a bit-part player for Spurs last season as he’s been dogged by injuries and disappointing form in recent seasons and is ‘ready to quit’ the club this summer.

The report adds:

‘Richarlison is ready to leave Tottenham this summer after news of a potential incoming, sources have told Football Insider.

‘If Spurs manage to land Kudus, sources close to the club say that Richarlison is likely to be the one sacrificed to make room in the squad, with a number of clubs monitoring the situation. Sources say that no decision will be made on his future until Frank has assessed his squad.’

Cristian Romero could also leave Spurs this summer as the World Cup winner is attracting interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

A new report from Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Romero is ‘getting closer’ to Atletico Madrid for around £43m (50 million euros).

‘Romero’s future appears to be clearer and closer to Atlético de Madrid. The Argentine defender has decided not to accept Tottenham’s latest offer and is reportedly taking steps to join Atlético Madrid.

‘According to sources close to the player and the club, the transfer is close to completion and is expected to be worth around €50 million.’

Tottenham have failed with their first proposal for Mohammed Kudus but the West Ham star has ‘said yes’ to joining Thomas Frank’s outfit, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The north London club have completed three deals so far this summer with Luka Vuskovic joining from Hajduk Split, while Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel have completed permanent moves after successful loan spells.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is currently the only player Tottenham have sold this summer with the Denmark international moving to Marseille, while Fraser Forster and Sergio Reguilon left on free transfers.

Tottenham are in a good position to hang onto some of its best players because of Champions League qualification, despite their horrific 17th-placed finish last season.

And they are also looking to continue to add some quality to improve Frank’s squad after the head coach joined from Brentford to succeed Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham are particularly interested in West Ham attacking midfielder Kudus with Romano revealing that the Chelsea and Newcastle target has agreed to join if Spurs can agree a fee with the Hammers.

Romano wrote on X: ‘Understand Mohammed Kudus is not talking to any other club at this stage: he wants Tottenham move. Kudus already said yes to Spurs project and club to club talks with West Ham will continue soon. Clear intention is to join Spurs. #THFC.’

The transfer expert added on his YouTube channel: “What I’m told about Kudus is that Tottenham made the first proposal to West Ham. It was rejected because West Ham didn’t want to accept that value for the player, something around £50m for Mohammed Kudus.

“But first point, Tottenham are expected to bid again for Kudus, so in the next days, Tottenham want to attack again.

“Second point, Thomas Frank has approved internally, Mohammed Kudus as a top target for Tottenham this summer, as a crucial target for Tottenham this summer, so they are prepared to advance and push for Kudus and then the player side.

“Probably the best news for Spurs fans is that my understanding is that Kudus wants to go to Tottenham.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher revealed recently that he was disappointed with some of Kudus’ performances this season but is clearly “a quality player”.

Carragher said in May: “There’s no doubt he’s (Kudus) a quality player who should be playing for a team, I would say, that is closer to the top of the table than near the bottom right now.

“But probably one of the reasons why West Ham are where they are this season is because he hasn’t shown the form that he showed last season.

“Last season he looked fantastic (but) he just hasn’t looked the same player this season.

“So I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a change there in some way because West Ham need the money but other clubs might think this is just an off season for him’ and last season was the real Kudus.

“And if they can get that player then maybe it’s a good signing. So it might be the type of situation where it maybe works for (all parties).”

We won’t bore you with the exact details of how we started thinking far too hard about things that fry our brain because they never ever actually happened. There’s cricket involved, let’s leave it there.

Anyway. It led us here. Football stuff that also never happened despite our brain at one time or other being entirely convinced it did.

Even now, we’re pretty sure some of these things did in fact happen, much like these facts we absolutely cannot believe.

Let’s hear yours at theeditor@football365.com

Stewart Downing’s underwhelming Tottenham career

Those couple of years at White Hart Lane really did sum up the lost potential of Downing’s career. He really did seem to have the world at his feet, but for neither the first nor last time, Spurs got in the way.

Of course, as always with Spurs, managerial changes got in the way. Signed by Harry Redknapp six months before he left the club, Downing never truly got over Andre Villas-Boas’ early suspicions, and that was that.

Managing just three Premier League goals and a handful of assists, he – like so many others before him after being chewed up by Spurs’ ridiculousness – sought solace at West Ham, because they are very, very, very slightly less ridiculous.

We all remember it now, don’t we? Except it never happened. We can picture Downing, a look of exasperated frustration on his face and a cockerel on his chest, so clearly that we do actually worry about the deeply uninspiring nature of the things our brain imagines.

The West Ham bit is true, though. He did end up at West Ham. Which makes us wonder whether on some level even Downing himself feels like he experienced an underwhelming 18 months at Spurs. We bet he does.

Roy Keane, Blackburn manager

Come on. You remember. Don’t act like you can’t immediately conjure this in your mind’s eye. Keane, bearded but only flecked with grey at this time, eyes narrowing with rage, Kappa-tracksuited, yelling furiously at Junior Hoilett or perhaps David Dunn. Sharing a knowing look with Ryan Nelsen about these lazy fancy dans. Telling Roque Santa Cruz that scoring goals is ‘just his job’ and nothing all that impressive.

Blackburn didn’t even have Kappa kits at the time of this absolute nonsense we’ve invented in our heads. We are not well.

This Golden Generation England team: James, Neville, Ferdinand, Terry, Cole, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Rooney, Owen

Ah yes, the Golden Generation. Should have won stuff, shouldn’t they? Didn’t, did they? They also never once lined up with this starting XI, despite it containing all the key ingredients of the era.

Now, we’ve obviously committed a significant mischief in sticking Wayne Rooney here, because he’s not strictly speaking Golden Generation, but did play alongside all of them.

When you stop and think about it properly, this team never happening starts to make plenty of sense. Start doing the maths of Rooney’s emergence and Rio Ferdinand’s, ahem, forgetfulness and Paul Scholes’ early international retirement and it all comes together.

But at first thought we’d confidently expect each and every one of you to just go right ahead and assume this team played together a bunch of times. Yet even if you take away one layer of mischief and replace Rio with Sol Campbell and it’s still only four games together.

READ: Jude Bellingham is the Wayne Rooney of this Golden Generation; will he under-achieve too?

Younes Kaboul and Tom Huddlestone at QPR

It is simply impossible for any halfway football-addled brain to have two players so indelibly linked with Harry Redknapp and make that tally with the fact he never, ever signed them during his spectacular destroy-and-exit at QPR.

It’s just so easy to picture them in hoops, isn’t it? Plodding semi-aimlessly around the place in half-arsed and vastly overpaid fashion.

Especially Tom Huddlestone, but especially Younes Kaboul.

Man United losing 6-3 to Southampton in their grey kit

We’ve got a few of these coming up, all of the same type. The previous ones are just complete fiction, but plausible fictions. It’s beguilingly easy to imagine Roy Keane in a Blackburn tracksuit, or Stewart Downing in an Under Armour Spurs kit, or Younes Kaboul stumbling around Loftus Road.

There is no real reason for any of those things or anything like them to come to mind so easily, but there’s just something about those combinations of man and club that feel right, so your brain does the rest.

These next few come from a slightly different place. These ones are things that did happen, but not the way you necessarily remember them. Now we fully expect the comment section here to be full of ‘Well I never thought that’ and hurrah for you, but we guarantee that while you may not have misremembered or conflated these specific incidents, you will have done it with others. Like Denis Law relegating Man United.

This one we reckon, if we’re honest, almost all of us have at some point or other got muddled up in our heads, even if we subsequently go ‘Oh no, those were separate hilarities’. And that’s the point, they were hilarities.

It must be hard to imagine for younger fans now, but there was a time when Manchester United losing a game of football to a team they shouldn’t really lose to was an event of national importance. There’s a reason ‘Hated, adored, never ignored’ came to be a United call to arms, and it’s far more powerful than the ‘Hated, adored, occasionally viewed with something approaching pity’ that would now apply.

Anyway, Back in the mid-90s, Manchester United did two hilarities at The Dell. And they are two of the more infamous United hilarities of the time. They lost a game 6-3, which even now would be notably funny, and they also infamously lost a game where they changed their grey kit at half-time because it had apparently rendered the players invisible to each other yet not, weirdly, to the Southampton players. Worst. Invincibility. Cloak. Ever.

But these two now frequently conflated events happened on two entirely separate occasions. United were in blue and white for the 6-3 paddling at the hands of a Southampton team managed by Graeme Souness, which itself feels like a candidate for this feature until you remember that he was the manager for that whole Ali Dia caper and then somehow it becomes something that could somehow belong in both this feature and its sibling about things that did happen but feel like they couldn’t possibly have and we’re not going to lie our brain really hurts.

READ: When kits go wrong: Villa suffer like Barca, Bees; Man Utd sockwatch; Fiorentina’s accidental fascism

Sir Alex Ferguson inspiring a 5-3 comeback win at White Hart Lane with the immortal: “Lads, it’s Tottenham”

Another classic era Man United one. Again, it’s two things that did happen, but not at the same time. Manchester United did come from 3-0 down at half-time to beat Spurs 5-3 in 2001 and Sir Alex Ferguson did once issue a team-talk comprising the words “Lads, it’s Tottenham.”

Or at least, there’s plausible enough evidence from enough places that he did despite the fact it could definitely also be one of those apocryphal things itself. Every chance we’ve put it in the wrong piece altogether.

Let’s accept, though, that he did say “lads, it’s Tottenham”. But what he definitely didn’t do was say it to inspire a comeback from 3-0 down at White Hart Lane.

Former Blackburn manager Roy Keane gives the full context in his telling of the story, and it makes it obvious it couldn’t possibly apply to a situation in which United are 3-0 down at White Hart Lane because it’s a) at home, b) pre-match and also about how easy it is to just sort Spurs out which wouldn’t really ring true at 3-0 down.

“I thought I knew what the group might need, that we didn’t need a big team talk.

“It was Tottenham at home. I thought please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what Tottenham is about, they are nice and tidy but we’ll f******g do them.

“He came in and said: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’, and that was it. Brilliant.”

It’s brilliant, and brilliantly Fergie, and it’s easy to see why it feeds into the legend even more if he said it at 3-0 down in a game United would go on to win 5-3. But we all also know that Fergie’s inspiring team-talk that day will have involved much more screaming, a very red face, some enormously industrial language and at least one threat of physical evidence.

Whatever he did worked tremendously, but we would bet our house against it containing such pith and poetry.

A final note on “lads, it’s Tottenham”. After That Night In Bilbao, Spurs have reclaimed the phrase to the extent that they now sell official merchandise with it daubed across T-shirts and hoodies and so forth, and we are absolutely here for that level of petty point-scoring and 20-year grudge-holding. Daniel Levy will copyright it next, you watch.

Next step: beating Juventus in a European final and whacking “it is the history of the Tottenham” on a £10 hoodie and charging £60 for it.

Steven Gerrard slipping to hand Chelsea the title at Anfield

We’ve covered Gerrard’s Slip in great detail in the companion piece to this pish, but it definitely deserves a place here for the simple fact that the actual title winners that season were a very forgettable pre-Pep Man City.

Nobody cared about that City title win, because it lacked anything approaching the AGUERROOOO moment and the story of that season was 100 per cent Liverpool’s unlikely title charge and inexplicable late collapse, via The Slip and Crystanbul.

The fact The Slip came against Chelsea, who were at that time still very much a team who sometimes won the league, makes a perfect combination of a memorable disaster against a plausible title winner against a backdrop of entirely forgettable actual title winners.

Name one interesting thing about that City season without looking, go on. They even scored more goals than exciting, free-flowing Liverpool. Yet nobody now can remember a single one of them. Stop saying you can. We don’t believe you.

Michael Owen scoring 20 Premier League goals in a season

Most natural finisher you’ve ever seen, wasn’t he? The teenage phenom, racking up the goals. All kinds of goals. Poacher’s goals, instinctive finishes, goals scored with aplomb, defenders left trailing desperately in his wake. This the direct result of years and years and years refusing to grow or develop even the tiniest interest or curiosity about literally anything that wasn’t about scoring goals. Or to some extent racehorses.

Sure, injuries caught up with him and as his hamstrings betrayed him the goals and glory dried up a little.

But still he could look back on all those 20-goal seasons from his younger days with Liverpool. For Michael Owen, the rapid youngster with the insatiable appetite for goals, was the very epitome of the 20-goal striker.

Except he never did. Despite scoring 175 league goals in his career at Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Manchester United he never once scored 20 league goals in a single season.

Tottenham: Frank ‘rates’ Villa midfielder tipped for 'more minutes' at Spurs

Tottenham 'prepared to offer' Aston Villa midfielder 'more minutes' as 'Thomas Frank rates him' - Football365
Description

Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are both keen to add quality in the transfer market this summer, though it’s been suggested the former could pinch a player off the latter.

Both Tottenham and Villa are deep into pre-season preparations, gearing up for what promises to be a pivotal Premier League campaign.

Spurs, under new manager Thomas Frank, are making key moves to reshape their squad, with attention on reshaping the squad in his image.

Richarlison is expected to be among those set to depart, while efforts to sign West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus continue despite his hefty £85 million release clause.

Villa, meanwhile, are expected to be active this summer despite a quiet start. With Alex Moreno linked to Leeds and speculation around Ollie Watkins, Philippe Coutinho, and Emi Martinez’s futures, the Villans are planning to refresh the squad.

Names like Anthony Elanga, Ademola Lookman, and Marcin Bulka are just a selection of names flying around the rumour mill.

Amid all this, Tottenham have emerged as serious suitors for Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.

According to former scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, the 24-year-old may be keen on a move to Spurs, eager for regular starting minutes that he feels he might not get at Villa.

“In his own mind, he’ll weigh up whether he thinks he’s going to be a regular in the Villa team,” Brown said.

“If that’s not the case, he has to ask the same question about whether he would be at Tottenham.

“From what I hear, Spurs would be prepared to offer him more minutes from the start of games than he is currently getting at Villa.

“If that is the case, I’m sure he would be happy to make that move.

“He’s had doubts about whether he’s going to be a regular starting XI player at Villa, or if he’s going to be better served moving somewhere else.

“So a move to Tottenham would be a fresh start and a new environment for him.

“There have been a few questions about what his future at Villa might look like, because the manager isn’t certain he’s going to be a big part of the plans.

“That opens the door for Spurs, because Thomas Frank rates him and he’s one they’ve been interested in for a while.”

Ramsey joined Villa’s academy at the age of six and quickly made his debut after turning professional in 2019.

Injuries have hampered his development at times, but that didn’t prevent him from registering 31 goal involvements across 167 appearances.

Second Spurs bid for PL star rejected as Chelsea 'confidence' in 'bidding war' revealed - Football365
Description

Tottenham have had a second bid rejected for West Ham star Mohammed Kudus, and here come Chelsea…

Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso have made their loan moves permanent to sign for Spurs in respective £30m and £21m transfers, while Luka Vuskovic has joined for £9.5m from Hajduk Split, but Thomas Frank is yet to make one of his own additions having replaced Ange Postecoglou.

They were linked with Bryan Mbeumo but he wants to join Manchester United and is nearing a move to Old Trafford as the Red Devils prepare a third bid for the 25-year-old.

And Frank now reportedly has his heart set on Kudus, with both the player and West Ham said to be open to his exit this summer, but Spurs have fallen short of the Hammers’ demands, according to TBR Football.

The Spurs bid, which was ‘logged earlier this week’, was for a fixed fee of £50m plus £5m in add-ons after their initial £50m offer was rejected last month.

The report adds:

‘West Ham United decided to reject the latest offer and are standing firm over their asking price, adamant that any accepted offer must at least start with a six.

‘The Hammers want around £65 million for Kudus and feel they are being quite reasonable, given his £84 million release clause at the London Stadium.’

Chelsea have also been linked with Kudus despite already completing the signings of Liam Delap from Ipswich for £30m and Brighton’s Joao Pedro from under Newcastle’s nose for £55m, while also nearing the addition of Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, also for £55m.

And West Ham’s hope that the Blues may enter a ‘bidding war’ is well founded, according to Hammers insiders Claret and Hugh.

The club chiefs don’t want to retain a player who doesn’t want to be there but want multiple clubs to be in for Kudus to increase his transfer fee.

The report states:

‘Of course with just one bidder, any negotiations are tough for the seller who has no second option if the first won’t play ball on the price sought.

‘However it is still clearly in West Ham’s negotiating team’s mind that Chelsea will rouse themselves and place a better bid on the table for the winger, strengthening the Hammers’ bargaining position and forcing the price up.

‘The fear was that with Chelsea signing Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for £55 million, their intent would vanish for Kudus. However that is reportedly far from the truth. Sources at the club are very confident that Chelsea will re-enter the bidding.’

Chelsea.news adds that the Blues are positioning themselves ‘to blow Tottenham out of the water for Kudus’ signature’ as they listen to offers for Noni Madueke, who’s attracting serious interest from Arsenal.

Spanish side Atletico Madrid have increased their offer for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero as they get near Spurs’ asking price, according to reports.

One player who has been linked with a move away from north London in recent seasons is Romero with the Argentina international admired by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

Confirming interest from Atletico last month, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano predicted that Tottenham would hold onto Romero for at least another season.

Romano said: “Atletico Madrid loves the player, so they would love to bring the player to the club one day. Simeone is also a big fan.

“From what I understand, with Tottenham in the Champions League and a new project now with Thomas Frank, I don’t see Tottenham losing a leader like Cuti Romero this summer.

“It will be very difficult to get the player in this summer transfer window, Daniel Levy wants to keep the player at the club. From what I’m hearing, Thomas Frank sees Cuti Romero as a crucial part of the squad from a technical perspective but also as a leader.”

However, Atletico Madrid’s interest is serious and Spanish website Fichajes insists that the Spanish side are ‘very close to paying’ Spurs’ asking price for Romero.

The Atletico board are ‘determined to fulfill one of Diego Simeone’s biggest desires’ by signing Romero this summer and the Argentina international is their ‘main target to bolster its defence’.

Atletico Madrid ‘has significantly increased its initial offer and is now considering reaching a figure close to 70 million euros, including the fixed fee (which would be around 55 million) and a series of variables that would complete the amount demanded by Spurs’.

Tottenham ‘does not want to let the defender leave for less than that amount, although the fact that the player has a contract until 2027 adds complexity to the deal’.

Atletico remain ‘positive’ on their chances of landing Romero and Simeone ‘has been in contact with the player for months’ as he attempts to persuade him to move to Spain.

Description

It’s advantage Spurs in north London with one Arsenal star ‘jealous’ and yet another ‘blow’ in the interminable Viktor Gyokeres saga.

Bitter rivals

One of the weirdest tropes of tabloid football journalism is the bizarre insistence on pretending that it’s impossible to imagine footballers at rival clubs being friends.

Even in today’s world of toxic fandom it makes no sense on any level. Nobody, for instance, expects Spurs fans to have no Arsenal-supporting friends. Because that would be nutty.

Yet the players themselves, with their obvious shared experiences and potential for similar lifestyles while living in similar locations and even – as in today’s example – being international team-mates, are expected to shun each other based purely on which team they play for.

It really doesn’t make any sense at all on any level, and today’s entry from The Sun is a notably odd one.

Inside jet-setting England star Dominic Solanke’s honeymoon with wife Erica that even Arsenal rival can’t help but like

It really shouldn’t need explaining to the actual adult who wrote that, but Arsenal players don’t automatically hate Spurs players. Apart from Jack Wilshere, and even that was mainly just Erik Lamela.

But this is also a rare case of the actual copy proving even weirder than the headline. Because when we get into it, Declan Rice – for it is he – is way beyond ‘can’t help but like’ Solanke’s happy news. He is in a jealous rage. Truly, north London is white and this proves it.

The incredible pictures even left one Arsenal rival jealous, with Declan Rice liking both posts.

Why’s he jealous? What on earth is that based on? Look we get that social media is toxic as all hell, so the passive-aggressive hate-like cannot be ruled out.

But on balance is it not perhaps slightly more likely that the 27-year-old Premier League footballer from England who’s based in London and the 26-year-old Premier League footballer who’s based in London just happen to be mates?

And even if football does colour absolutely everything about their existence, they were also in the same England squad less than four months ago. They are literally team-mates. But no, this must be another front in the North London Rivalry. Any doubt over whether Spurs or Arsenal had the better 24/25 season have now been put firmly to bed.

What Sup

Mediawatch is painfully aware of how carefully it must tread here lest our beautiful glass house be destroyed by all these massive great rocks we’re yeeting around, but we do always enjoy a chuckle at the self-indulgent way in which journalists cover stories about other journalists.

There is an entire absence of self-awareness here. Not so much a refusal to accept that normal people just don’t give a shiny sh*te but more an unwillingness even to consider the notion.

We saw it recently with the mournful tone in which the loss of ‘household names’ from Sky Sports News was reported. It’s sad when anyone loses their job, of course, but the idea that anyone outside this insular little world would care more about someone who reads out transfer rumours than, say, a steelworker is very odd.

Today brings happier news for journos talking about journos, though, with the revelation that Sky Sports are going to bring back Sunday Supplement five years after it was axed.

Mediawatch was very much of the view that the Supplement’s penchant for navel-gazing circle-jerkery meant it was far better suited to its more recent home as a podcast that we can cheerfully forget exists but no, apparently it is returning to our screens.

The collective shrug of the shoulders from the general public is matched by the cheers of excitement for the journo-class for whom this news knocks Gyokeres-to-Arsenal into a cocked hat.

Sky Sports bring back hugely-popular football show – just five years after it was axed from their schedule

That’s the Mail’s headline on a story given higher billing on its football homepage than the latest on Gyokeres or Harvey Elliott or Marcus Rashford. Mediawatch is, as ever, open to accusations of hypocrisy here but while yesterday we did reach something of a breaking point with transfer boosts and blows we do at least accept that people are interested in those updates.

Sky Sports ‘bring back iconic football show that ran for 20 years’ after it was axed in 2020

The Sun go with this, and are we just too cynical now about how headlines are used to deceive in believing there might be a deliberate attempt to hint that the returning show is Soccer AM rather than the Sunday Supplement? It does mean crediting tabloid journalists with a level of self-awareness that makes us slightly uncomfortable.

Blow over

Mediawatch dealt – at punishing, exhaustive and exhausting length – yesterday with the non-stop rollercoaster of transfer boosts and blows.

With today’s reports suggesting a pretty major breakthrough and increased likelihood of Viktor Gyokeres joining Arsenal and us all being able to get on with our lives without worrying about the multiple daily updates, this Daily Express report from yesterday afternoon has already aged like milk.

Man Utd and Arsenal suffer Viktor Gyokeres blow as Sporting ‘accept transfer bid’

Now ‘transfer rumour update that ages like milk’ is not something Mediawatch always bothers with – we’d never have time for anything else if we did. And we’d have to have a few uncomfortable conversations with colleagues.

So why single out this one? Because it is egregious ‘as’-based bollocks even by the standards of the day.

The transfer bid Sporting had accepted that represented such a blow to Man Utd and Arsenal hopes?

A £47m bid from Crystal Palace for Ousmane Diomande. Because:

The centre-back’s switch to Selhurst Park would relieve the pressure to sell star forward Gyokeres on the cheap.

What pressure? Sporting have never had any intention of selling Gyokeres ‘on the cheap’ and have two of the biggest clubs in England on the hook. But yes, this Diomande deal is a real blow.
