Man Utd transfer: Spurs submit 'shock enquiry' in 'late move' to hijack Chelsea with 'swap deal alive'

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Red Devils are looking to offload a couple of pricey talents before the January transfer window closes as they need to raise funds for a huge rebuild.

United’s dire start to the 2024/25 season has opened the door for pretty much their entire squad to leave if they receive a suitable offer and Garnacho is arguably the most likely to leave.

Garnacho would be a pure profit sale and he has attracted interest from Napoli and Chelsea this month.

This saga has taken a new twist, though. According to The Daily Mail, Spurs have ‘made a shock enquiry’ for Garnacho after Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel rejected them.

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

The report explains:

‘United have been willing to sell for around £60million amid interest from Chelsea and Napoli.

‘It is unclear whether Garnacho would consider the move to Tottenham at this stage.

‘Spurs’ initial enquiry around the Argentine winger was around a loan deal, and the north London outfit have a long-standing, strong interest in Garnacho, though talks have still to progress.

‘Spurs’ late move for the Argentine winger comes just hours after a move for Bayern winger Tel broke down. The north Londoners had reached a £50m agreement with Bayern over the player, leaving talks between Tel and his agent as the final hurdle to get a deal over the line.’

On Friday, a report from journalist Fraser Fletcher from our pals at TEAMtalk claims a ‘swap deal’ involving Garnacho and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunu is ‘alive’.

‘Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel is of interest to Chelsea, Man Utd, Tottenham and others after the 19-year-old has made it clear he’s open to a new challenge.

‘But an even bigger deal could still be done with sources adamant that Garnacho remains a key target for Chelsea and a move to the London side is not off the cards yet.

‘Man Utd, meanwhile, have asked to be kept informed of Nkunku’s situation, with the striker open to moving elsewhere to get more consistent playing time.

‘That has set up an opportunity for the clubs to do two deals that would see both players make the switch, although they would be ‘separate’ transfers for PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) purposes.

‘There is also a belief behind the scenes at Man Utd that Nkunku would fit perfectly into Ruben Amorim’s system and the manager is keen to work with him.’

According to reports, AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up talks regarding Fikayo Tomori’s potential return to the Premier League.

Spurs are working to complete a couple of signings before the January transfer window closes on Monday night.

One of Ange Postecoglou‘s priorities is to sign a new centre-back as they have been dogged by injuries in this department this season.

Tottenham have been without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for much of this season as Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Djed Spence and Co. have been used out of position at centre-back.

Van de Ven returned to Tottenham’s starting XI against Elfsborg in the Europa League, but their injury woes worsened as Radu Dragusin was forced off after replacing the Dutchman at half-time.

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

Postecoglou – favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked – has revealed that Dragusin is a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Brentford. He said: “We’ve got to let it settle down.

“We’ll get some more information over the weekend. He’s (unlikely to be) involved this weekend, at the moment. We’ll have to wait to see the extent of it.

“Hard to tell (the extent of the injury). It’s a knee (issue), (but we’ve) got to let it settle down. Always a concern when it’s a knee injury, but we have to wait and see”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has subsequently revealed that Spurs fear Dragusin’s injury “could be serious”.

He said: “Tottenham internally feel that Radu Dragusin’s knee injury could be serious, at least one and eventually two centre back will be joining in the final days.

“Negotiations are ongoing for Fikayo Tomori and more options in the shortlist.”

As mentioned, Spurs are monitoring Tomori and Romano confirms AC Milan are “pushing” to get this deal done.

He said: “AC Milan are pushing to get Fikayo Tomori’s sale to Tottenham done.

“Negotiations ongoing on player side for personal terms, Milan want to move on and sign new CB.”

However, Tomori has slipped in the pecking order this season and has only made nine Serie A starts.

On Friday evening, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed the fee they are “hoping” to get for the defender.

Jacobs said: “Spurs advancing in talks with Milan for Fikayo Tomori.

“Milan hoping for €30m. Nothing agreed with club or player yet, but Spurs moving to add defensive cover before the window shuts.”

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has reportedly made his final transfer decision amid interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

The France U21 international – who has 16 goals in 83 appearances – has impressed in flashes for Bayern Munich, but he’s barely featured for the Bundesliga giants this season as he’s behind Harry Kane in the pecking order.

With game time hard to come by at Bayern, a report earlier this week revealed he had ‘decided’ to leave Vincent Kompany’s side this month.

Several Premier League clubs are in the market for a new striker and have shown interest in Tel, who has attracted a £50m bid from Tottenham Hotspur.

Bayern Munich agreed to sell Tel at this price, but Fabrizio Romano revealed on Friday evening that he’s rejected a move to Spurs.

Romano said: “Mathys Tel’s current decision is to reject Tottenham proposal.

“Despite willingness to sign him for €60m package and face to face talks, Tel has informed Spurs about his decision.

“Barring any surprises, Tel won’t join Spurs… more PL clubs are on it now.”

He added: “Mathys Tel and his agent are in Munich together to assess all options after rejecting Spurs proposal.

“Tottenham will explore other targets while Tel will consider other bids for loan/permanent move. Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa all in contact.”

As mentioned, this left four Premier League clubs chasing Tel, but The Athletic’s David Ornstein is reporting that they will miss out on the forward.

‘Tottenham had deals in place with Bayern, Tel and his representatives — only for the player to ultimately indicate a wish to remain in Munich.

‘The Athletic reported on January 30 that Spurs were in advanced talks with Bayern over a permanent transfer for the French forward.

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are ‘advancing in talks’ to sign former Chelsea star Fikayo Tomori from Serie A giants AC Milan.

Spurs are moving to add to their squad before the January transfer window closes on Monday night.

The North London outfit were among the clubs in the race to land Bayern Munich teenager Mathys Tel. They agreed a deal with the Bundesliga giants, but Fabrizio Romano has revealed that he’s decided to turn down a move to Tottenham.

It was previously reported that Tel was Spurs’ ‘new priority’ this month, but they have turned their attention to signing a new centre-back.

Spurs have been dogged by injuries this season and this is particularly the case at centre-back as they have been without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for most of the campaign.

Several Tottenham players have been used out of position at centre-back this season and they are looking to make a signing in the coming days.

Romano has also revealed England international Tomori is one “option” they are considering.

The 27-year-old progressed through the ranks at Chelsea but left to join AC Milan permanently in 2021. He has made 163 appearances for the Serie A giants in all competitions.

This season, Tomori has been in and out of the team as he’s only made nine Serie A and could return to the Premier League.

Romano said: “Tottenham and AC Milan are in negotiations for Fikayo Tomori, among 3 options for Spurs at CB as clubs are still discussing formula and fee.

“Negotiations also ongoing with Tomori on personal terms. Spurs want to add one more defender to Postecoglou’s squad.”

Journalist Ben Jacobs later added: “Spurs advancing in talks with Milan for Fikayo Tomori.

“Milan hoping for €30m. Nothing agreed with club or player yet, but Spurs moving to add defensive cover before the window shuts.”

Spurs were dealt a further blow on Thursday night as Radu Dragusin was forced off injured against Elfsborg. Speaking post-match, Ange Postecoglou said: “We seem to be losing players as we get them back.

“We don’t want to lose anyone else, but again, best laid plans. We obviously tried to shield Radu last night, because he had played a lot of football. He comes on and he gets injured.

“You can’t plan for these things. We’ve got a big week coming up, starting Sunday. We’re going to have to do it with this core group of players, so we’ve just got to be careful about how we go about it.”

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur have been ‘rejected’ by Bayern Munich star Mathys Tel amid interest from four Premier League rivals.

Tel is on the radar of several Premier League clubs after it emerged that he is looking to leave Bayern Munich before the January transfer window closes.

The 19-year-old joined Bayern Munich from Ligue Un outfit Rennes ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. He has 16 goals in his 83 appearances for the Bundesliga giants but has been a bit-part player this term.

The teenage forward needs regular game time and Spurs ‘reached an agreement’ with Bayern Munich on Thursday after making a £50m offer, as per L’Equipe.

‘Bayern Munich and Tottenham have reached an agreement for a transfer of striker Mathys Tel for around €60 million. The 19-year-old is still thinking about it.

‘Will Tottenham end up winning the bid for Mathys Tel? The London club has agreed with Bayern Munich (contract until 2029) for a transfer of the striker around €60 million.

‘The 19-year-old striker must now make a decision. The former Rennes player takes the time to reflect. Other clubs should send proposals quickly.’

On Friday morning, a report claimed Man Utd are attempting to ‘hijack’ Tottenham’s move for Tel, who has decided to reject the North London outfit.

This is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who claims Tel ‘won’t join Spurs’.

He tweeted: “Mathys Tel’s current decision is to reject Tottenham proposal.

“Despite willingness to sign him for €60m package and face to face talks, Tel has informed Spurs about his decision.

Bayern director Max Eberl is insistent that any deal for Tel must be “right for all parties”.

“Mathys can imagine a move away. We need to come to terms with the facts,” Eberl said.

“Whether it’s a loan or a sale, we’ll see. It needs to be right for all parties. Will we do it? Our squad is very well set up.”

Tel has made eight Bundesliga appearances this season but only two of those were starts.

Vincent Kompany added: “What’s important is that the player is still a Bayern player.

“Every player can be selected until the last moment. My role here is always to use the players available.”

Man Utd attempt to 'hijack' £50m Tottenham transfer for player who 'wants' Red Devils move

Man Utd are looking to hijack a deal for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel as Tottenham and other clubs eye his transfer, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with their narrow 1-0 win over Fulham moving them up to 12th in the table over the weekend.

Fingers have been pointed at their forward line a lot this season with only five Premier League sides scoring fewer goals than them this term.

Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have all come in for their fair share of criticism and Man Utd are now in the market for an attacker before the transfer window shuts.

Man Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all explored a potential move for Tel this month with Bayern Munich star available.

Tottenham are believed to be the club leading the race to sign the France Under-21 international with reports in France that Spurs have agreed a deal worth around £50m for Tel’s permanent transfer.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claimed last night that Man Utd “held new talks” over a potential move for Tel before the deadline.

Plettenberg wrote on X: “Manchester United remain active in the race for Mathys Tel and have held new talks with his agent today.

“The Red Devils are reportedly considering a loan move. Bayern already have a verbal agreement with Tottenham over a permanent deal worth €60m.”

While Fabrizio Romano gave his own update on his YouTube channel: “All the top clubs in England have decided to call Mathys Tel. Today, Tottenham had direct contact with Daniel Levy working on this deal. Spurs are ready to play €6m to Tottenham and Bayern are ready to let him go. Now it all depends on Tel. Tottenham are ready with an agreement with Bayern but Aston Villa are also trying and have the money in their pocket after selling Jhon Duran.

“Also, Man Utd are interested on a loan and still pushing on the player’s side. And then there’s Arsenal and Chelsea. Chelsea have been pushing from the beginning but they have many offensive players and Tel really wants to play, so it’ll take a big convincing action to get the green light.”

And now Sky Germany (via Football Transfers) claim that Man Utd ‘remain locked in talks with Bayern Munich in the hopes of hijacking’ Tel’s potential move to Tottenham.

The report adds:

‘The 19-year-old would ultimately prefer a loan departure as he still harbours hopes of making it at Bayern in the future as the club showed a lot of faith in him, signing him for €20m after he had only just broken through at Stade Rennais.

‘The fact that Tel is reluctant to leave permanently has emboldened Man Utd to continue their contact with Bayern as their intention from the start has been to only sign the teenager on an initial loan.

‘According to the above-mentioned outlet, Man Utd initiated fresh talks, including with Tel’s agent, on Thursday even after news had broken of the agreement with Tottenham.’

And journalist Paul O’Keefe has revealed that Tel has his eyes on a move to Man Utd over any other club, he wrote on Thursday: “The boy wants Man Utd. Let’s see how Bayern play that.”

Tottenham 'galvanised' as Postecoglou says three Spurs players 'won't sleep' after Elfsborg win

Joe Cole believes the Tottenham squad will feel ‘galvanised’ after their crucial Europa League win over Elfsborg on Thursday.

Tottenham secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a 3-0 win over the Swedish side, who ended up in 26th place, missing out on a playoff spot.

Ange Postecoglou desperately needed a positive result after another miserable Premier League defeat.

Spurs lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City last Sunday despite leading at half-time, leaving them 19th in the Premier League form table.

They have found respite in the Europa League and Postecoglou had three academy players to thank for getting the three points, which helped them finish fourth in the league phase table.

Dane Scarlett came off the bench to score his first senior goal before Damola Ajayi netted on his debut with a fine left-footed finish.

Fellow youth graduate Mikey Moore made it three late on to cap off an amazing night for the Spurs academy.

Former Chelsea and England winger Cole believes three goals from the youngsters could ‘galvanise the place’, potentially proving to be a turning point in the club’s season.

“It’s a massive moment for the club,” he said during TNT Sports coverage.

“Don’t underestimate the feeling that the three young lads scoring has. It galvanises the place.

“Everyone from their families, the staff, the people in the academy that have worked with them and were all rooting for them.”

Postecoglou was delighted that his side “were never really threatened” by Elfsborg and said Thursday’s victory was “made in Tottenham”.

“Really pleased,” he said. “The objective was to try and win today and secure our spot in the top eight. I thought the boys were good, controlled the game and we were never really threatened.

“We had to bide our time as they sat deep, but they gave that up in the end to chase the game and the goals came.

“[The victory was] made in Tottenham tonight.

“I’m super pleased for the young boys, and we also shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that we had a couple more teenagers out there too.

“I’m sure those three lads won’t sleep tonight. We needed something tonight and the young lads stepped up.

“We’ve got another big week coming up so the changes at half time were about managing the load. We still picked up injury with Radu [Dragusin] which is not great, but the three lads at half time are good.

“[On Dragusin’s injury] It is too early to say what it is, we will need to investigate further. But it was his knee which is not good.

“We have another game on Sunday. The club will be working hard behind the scenes to see if we can get something done.”

Scarlett was obviously ecstatic to open his account for the club on his 18th senior appearance, saying that he is “ready to kick on”.

He said: “It was amazing. I have been waiting for that moment for a long time. I have been on loan and experienced men’s football. I feel really good now. Ready to kick on. Very happy.

“I have just been training hard with a clear mind and waiting for the opportunity. Today it came and I am just grateful that the team won.”

Victory on Thursday night extended an impressive run of 17 matches unbeaten at home for Spurs, including qualifiers.

Their last defeat came against German side RB Leipzig in the Champions League five years ago.

Man Utd, Spurs, Rangers all somehow progress as Europa League reputation takes knock

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are the joke clubs of the Premier League but have finished in the top eight of the Europa League. Make of that what you will.

The Europa has provided some much-needed respite for the Premier League strugglers, though their European campaigns have been far from stress-free.

It feels like yesterday Erik ten Hag had to avoid defeat against FC Porto to save his job. He did and was sacked a few weeks later. The 3-3 draw in Portugal was absolute chaos. Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund put them 2-0 up but the Red Devils needed a 91st-minute Harry Maguire goal to rescue a 3-3 draw, finishing the match with 10 men after Bruno Fernandes’ second red card in a matter of days.

Man United drew their first three games in disappointing fashion but an unbeaten start is an unbeaten start at the end of the day. Ruud van Nistelrooy earned them their first win following Ten Hag’s dismissal and Ruben Amorim kept the momentum going with wins over Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzen, Rangers and now FSCB.

Ruben Amorim’s side played quite well against FCSB and won the match through goals from Diogo Dalot and Kobbie Mainoo, who assisted the opener on a good night for him and academy graduates in general.

United finish the league phase with five wins, three draws and zero defeats, unlike Spurs, whose 3-0 win over Swedish side Elfsborg on Thursday helped them to a fourth-place finish after losing only once at Galatasaray.

Ange Postecoglou’s men took their time to take the lead but they deserved it when it came. What they and Big Ange did not deserve was another injury and especially not another injury to a defender.

This time it was Radu Dragusin, who landed awkwardly and was forced to come off, with Archie Gray moving back to centre-back, the poor sod. Micky van de Ven did at least return to the starting XI, in what is a monumental boost.

Dragusin’s replacement was Dane Scarlett and the 20-year-old – who was recalled from his Oxford United loan earlier this month – scored a fine header to open his account for Spurs on his 18th appearance. It came via an outstanding Dejan Kulusevski cross as the Swede got back in the goal contributions after a couple of subpar performances due to fatigue from carrying his team-mates on his back every week.

Another youth graduate, Damola Ajayi, scored on his senior debut. What a finish it was and what an incredible moment for the 19-year-old, who made sure of the three points and Spurs’ place in the top eight of the league phase before fellow youngster Mikey Moore made it three.

Manchester United join them in the last 16 of the Europa League, while a third group of jokers in Rangers snuck an eighth-place finish with an edgy win over Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox.

With these three clubs finishing in the top eight of the Europa League league phase, the competition has lost all integrity.

We are kidding… ever so slightly.

It has been an extremely weird 2024/25 Europa League. Manchester United and Spurs finished third and fourth, Rangers finished eighth despite an extremely difficult schedule and being pathetic domestically, while Braga, Hoffenheim, Besiktas, Nice and Slavia Prague couldn’t even finish in a play-off spot.

In truth, Man United and Spurs should really be finding solace in the Europa League but they still faced some very handy sides. Their final league phase standing does not make much sense considering their Premier League woes.

Spurs are second-bottom in the Premier League form table, while United are 13th. In the actual table, Spurs are 15th and United 12th. They have been absolutely atrocious. One rightly changed their manager and the other is refusing to do so despite walking on the thinnest of ice above an actual relegation battle.

Unfortunately for Postecoglou and Amorim, it is time to focus on domestic football for a while. That is possibly even more daunting news for Rangers, who would probably be unbeaten in all competitions this season if every match was played on a Thursday night.

They seem to come alive under the lights in Europe and that has been the case for a few years now, reaching the final of this competition three years ago. In the Scottish Premiership, they have been nothing short of a joke, with one Celtic hand already on the trophy.

Their progression straight through to the last 16 is more damning than Spurs and Man United’s, which is still pretty damning to the Europa’s reputation.

Premier League strugglers Tottenham have agreed a fee with Bayern Munich for young striker Mathys Tel, according to reports in France.

The signing of Tel, who is wanted by a host of top European clubs, would certainly lift the mood at Spurs, who are currently 15th in the Premier League with seven wins from 23 matches.

The French teenager has reportedly told Bayern that he wants to leave in search of more playing time, with the Bundesliga giants open to letting him go.

A loan departure is not ruled out, though the agreement would have to include a buy option, though a permanent transfer works best for Bayern and Tel.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Spurs have all been linked this month but it is Ange Postecoglou’s side who are surprisingly winning the race for the 19-year-old’s signature.

The north Londoners have stolen a march on their rivals by agreeing an ‘agreement’ on a transfer worth a fee in the region of €60million (£50million), which should relieve some of the pressure on head coach Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy if the deal goes through.

According to reports, Aston Villa have joined six clubs in the race to sign Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Bayern Munich invested around £24m to sign the France U21 international from Ligue Un outfit Rennes during the 2022 summer transfer window.

Tel has sparkled in flashes for the Bundesliga giants as he’s grabbed 16 goals and seven assists in his 83 appearances in all competitions.

Despite this, the 19-year-old is looking to leave Bayern Munich this window as he is behind Harry Kane in the pecking order. He has only made five starts this term in all competitions.

Several Premier League clubs are in the market for a new forward and Tel represents a tempting option for a couple of sides.

Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have previously been mentioned and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims it’s a seven-club chase.

He said: “One more club has called today for Mathys Tel: Aston Villa have also asked for deal conditions.

‘Tottenham are one of several clubs who have opened talks with both Bayern Munich and Mathys Tel over a potential transfer.

‘Spurs have already made Bayern aware that a permanent deal for Tel would be too expensive this month given Bayern are asking for more than £40 million.

‘However, the Lilywhites have informed the German giants that they would be prepared to do a loan with an obligation deal for the 19-year-old.

‘TBR Football understands that Bayern would prefer a permanent deal for Tel this month, but they would accept a loan with obligation.

‘Arsenal and Manchester United have also had contact with both parties, meanwhile, Tel has reservations about joining Chelsea but the Blues retain an interest in him.

‘Tel has made it clear via his representatives that he does not expect to be spending time on the bench at his new club – which is the main reason he is leaving Bayern.’
