Eberechi Eze expected to be left out of Crystal Palace squad with replacement already lined up - talkSPORT
Description

Eberechi Eze is reportedly set to miss Crystal Palace's Premier League opener against Chelsea, with the Eagles already looking at a potential replacement.

Oliver Glasner's side will head to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but will likely be without their star man Eze, who is heavily linked with a move to Tottenham.

The England international is thought to be open to a switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Spurs and Palace locked in talks.

Spurs opted against paying Eze's £68million release clause, which expired on Friday.

The north London club value the 27-year-old closer to the £55m they paid for Mohammed Kudus, and it remains to be seen whether Palace will accept an offer below his clause valuation.

With Eze's future in south London looking increasingly doubtful, the Eagles have now begun to consider potential replacements.

Reports suggest they have approached Leicester over a move for attacking midfielder Bilal El Khannouss.

The 21-year-old has been has been eyed up by a number of Premier League sides following the Foxes' relegation.

But there is no guarantee he will leave the King Power Stadium in the coming weeks, with the terms of an exit complex.

Palace have been known admirers of El Khannouss for some time, but have now made contact with Leicester to formalise their interest.

While an offer has yet to be submitted, it is thought the Morocco international would be open to the idea.

Any move depends largely on Eze's situation, who now looks to be inching towards a Selhurst Park exit.

Palace will be considering multiple options to strengthen their attack, with El Khannouss emerging as a leading candidate.

Despite being linked with a move away, the playmaker started Leicester's opening game against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, assisting both goals in a 2-1 home win.

El Khannouss joined Leicester from Belgian outfit Genk last summer for a £19m fee, penning a four-year deal.

While Leicester endured a miserable season collectively as they were relegated with a 19th-place Premier League finish, El Khannouss made an impression.

He was a regular for both Ruud van Nistelrooy and predecessor Steve Cooper making 31 league appearances, scoring twice and adding three assists.

As speculation continues over his future, El Khannouss must first focus on business with his current employers.

Leicester travel to Preston for their first away match of the season at 3pm today, as they look to make it two wins from two.

Tottenham manager issued immediate quit threat after 'unacceptable' defeat to Burnley

Tottenham manager issued immediate quit threat after ‘unacceptable’ defeat to Burnley - talkSPORT
Description

This was the history of the Tottenham.

Europa League champions Spurs head into their Premier League opener with the biggest monkey off their back after 17 trophyless seasons.

That baron run was one of the most painful in English football, and it was also one twice referred to in brutal fashion by Italians.

In 2018 Giorgio Chiellini coined his famous ‘history of the Tottenham’ quote when Juventus came back from a goal down to knock them out of the 2018 Champions League last 16, and in 2022 it was Antonio Conte’s turn.

Spurs open their 2024/25 season against Burnley, but in very different circumstances to a match against the Clarets in 2022 when Conte threatened to quit.

Chairman Daniel Levy had earlier twice come close to ending his side’s historic trophyless run with Mauricio Pochettino finishing as a runner-up in the Premier League and Champions League.

Yet without any silverware to boast about, he went for broke with serial winners Jose Mourinho and Conte.

Mourinho was sacked just before a Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, but for Conte, he almost left of his own accord.

Appointed in November 2021 to much fanfare, Spurs had landed a winner in his prime, with Conte just coming off his fifth league title across England and Italy, taking Serie A with Inter.

Things started well too with one defeat in his first 11 games, but when the losses started coming at the turn of the year, Conte’s demeanour quickly changed.

Conte lost three times in two weeks to his former side Chelsea - enough to put anyone in a bad mood.

But when the defeats continued against relegation battlers Southampton, Wolves and then Burnley, he finally snapped.

"In the last five games we lost four games. I think nobody deserves this type of situation, but this is the reality,” he said after a 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor.

"There will be an assessment about the club and about me, because for me this situation is very frustrating.

"I am really sorry for this situation, especially for the fans – who really do not deserve this.

"The club has to make an assessment to understand what is the best solution.

"This club has changed coaches, but the players are always the same, and the results have not changed.

"I cannot accept continuing to lose."

Spurs had just won at leaders Manchester City in their previous match, but falling to a team in the bottom three straight after was too much for Conte to stomach.

"I came in to improve the situation but at this moment I'm not so good to improve this situation. We are working hard,” he added.

"We are trying to get the best out of every single player. I'm too honest.

"I'm not used to this type of situation and I'm trying to change it but I'm not.

"We are doing everything to change the situation but it's not enough. Four defeats out of five is not good enough. This doesn't happen to me.

"Maybe I'm not so good. Tottenham called me to change things but I'm too honest.

"I could just take my salary but I'm too honest. We've lost four out of five games. This is unacceptable.

"If we continue on this way, we have to pay great attention."

Conte would eventually guide his team to an impressive fourth place, securing Champions League football.

However, it was more of the same in the 2022/23 season, and in March the now 56-year-old staged one of English football’s greatest-ever rants.

Lashing out at his team after throwing away a two goal lead to draw 3-3 with Southampton, he called the players ‘selfish’ and that they ‘don’t want to play under stress’.

He also attacked Levy and the owners, saying: “Tottenham’s story is this. Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here.”

Conte departed soon after, and it looked like Levy and the hierarchy were fully out of ideas for how to end their trophy drought.

Yet they did it with Ange Postecoglou, and despite his sacking as a Europa League winner, the positive vibes have continued into the 2025/26 season with Thomas Frank in the dugout.

Burnley are up next, but at least this time there’s no chance of any ultimatums from the manager.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley predictions

How close they were.

On Wednesday night, Tottenham Hotspur were mere moments away from winning a second European trophy in a matter of months. Leading Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup, Spurs just needed to keep their opponents at bay for a little while longer to claim the prize.

They could not quite manage it. PSG struck in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time through Goncalo Ramos, then went on to win on penalties.

Tottenham had taken the lead through Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute, before his fellow centre-back Cristian Romero doubled their advantage shortly after the break.

At that point Spurs were in dreamland, leading the Champions League winners 2-0 in their first competitive game under new manager Thomas Frank.

PSG hit back in the 85th minute, as Lee Kang-in halved the deficit. Then it was down to Ramos to break Tottenham hearts late on.

With the momentum against them, it was always going to be tough for Frank’s side to triumph on spot-kicks. And so it proved, as misses from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel allowed PSG to win 4-3.

Still, there were plenty of positives for Frank to take from his team’s performance in Udine.

Tottenham were frequently too open under Ange Postecoglou last term, and there were immediate signs of more pragmatism in their play on Wednesday.

Spurs were not afraid to play the ball long and they also carried more of a threat from set-pieces, scoring twice. The strategy will need to be different this weekend, though, with Tottenham set to have much more of the ball than they did against PSG.

Frank showed himself to be an adaptable coach at Brentford, and Tottenham fans will be looking to see that quality on display when Burnley come to town.

Brentford under Frank did not dominate the ball very often. Last season they ranked 15th for average possession. Frank must show that he can coach attacking patterns to break down deep defences.

Burnley are unlikely to be too adventurous on matchday one. They failed to adapt their style the last time they won promotion, and that cost Vincent Kompany’s side their place in the division. We can expect less dogmatism under Scott Parker, a former Tottenham player.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley betting tips

Tottenham Hotspur begin the Thomas Frank era in the Premier League this weekend.

Tottenham to win to nil

Burnley conceded only 16 goals in the Championship last term, which works out as roughly one goal every three games.

That was a remarkable achievement, but it is worth noting that Parker’s team ‘should’ have conceded 16 more goals based on their xG against.

James Trafford, the goalkeeper who helped them be so miserly, has since joined Manchester City, with Martin Dubravka signed as his replacement.

Dubravka is in for a busy afternoon, while at the other end of the field his attacking team-mates will have to make the most of the limited opportunities they have.

A clean sheet in Frank’s first home game would bode well for Tottenham given their defensive struggles last time out. We like their chances of getting one.

⚽ Back Tottenham to win to nil at 23/20 with BetMGM ⚽

Josh Cullen to be booked

Only five players in the Championship received more yellow cards than Josh Cullen this season - and that was while he was playing for one of the best teams in the division.

An all-action midfielder who is not afraid to get stuck in, Cullen will be key to Burnley’s chances of avoiding defeat at Tottenham.

He will be tasked with breaking up play in the centre of the park whenever possible, and Parker will allow him to do that by fair means or foul.

Cullen had his name taken by referees on 11 occasions last term, while he received nine yellows in the top flight the season before.

Do not be surprised if Cullen is booked in north London this weekend.

⚽ Tip Josh Cullen to be booked at 5/2 with Tote ⚽

Mohammed Kudus to score or assist

Having used a 3-5-2 that often resembled a 5-3-2 against PSG, Frank is likely to switch to a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation here.

That will probably mean a different role for Mohammed Kudus, a summer signing from West Ham who started up top with Richarlison on Wednesday.

Kudus played in a number of different positions at the London Stadium: on the left, on the right, as a No.10 and as a centre-forward.

If Frank wants to get him and Brennan Johnson into the same XI, Kudus will probably be deployed on the left.

Wherever he plays, the Ghana international will carry a threat. A supremely creative player when he is on song, Kudus can either assist a team-mate or score himself against Burnley.

⚽ Choose Mohammed Kudus to score or assist at 17/20 with Midnite ⚽

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley predicted lineups

Tottenham Hotspur expected lineup: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Bentancur, Sarr, Palhinha; Kudus, Richarlison, Johnson.

Burnley expected lineup: Dubravka; Walker, Esteve, Ekdal, Hartman; Laurent, Hannibal, Cullen; Edwards, Bruun Larsen, Anthony.

Two howlers and a red card - Ex-Tottenham Hotspur player Paulo Gazzaniga has one of the worst starts to a season ever

Ex-Spurs man Paulo Gazzaniga has one of the worst starts to a season ever - talkSPORT
Description

Paulo Gazzaniga had perhaps the worst performance of his career during Girona's LaLiga defeat at home to Rayo Vallecano.

The former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper is now in his fourth season at the Spanish side following an initial loan move from Fulham in 2021.

Gazzaniga was named in the Girona starting XI for the opening match of the new LaLiga season, but made a big mistake just 18 minutes in.

In an attempt to clear his lines, the Argentine scuffed the ball and it bounced across the face of goal for Jorge de Frutos to score.

After Alvaro Garcia Rivera made it 2-0, Gazzaniga suffered another error with his feet by kicking the ball straight at de Frutos.

And as the Rayo Vallecano man ran towards the loose ball, he was fouled inside the area to win a penalty.

Gazzaniga was shown a straight red card by referee Javier Alberola Rojas and tried to protest the decision, but to no avail.

Isi Palazon was the designated man for the penalty, and slotted his effort past substitute goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapyvtsov.

Girona therefore entered half-time 3-0 down and with only ten men following Gazzaniga's errors.

They reduced the deficit early in the second half through Joel Roca, but it didn't inspire a comeback as they fell to a 3-1 defeat.

Gazzaniga's career so far

After a spell in the Valencia academy, Gazzaniga got his first taste of senior football with Gillingham.

He then signed for Southampton in 2012 and spent five years there, but made just 23 appearances before leaving for Spurs.

Gazzaniga was part of the squad that reached the Champions League final in 2019 where he was on the bench for a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

A move to Fulham followed and his loan to Girona was announced at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 33-year-old signed a permanent two-year deal afterwards and then played in all 38 LaLiga matches in the subsequent season.

During a home match against Athletic Bilbao, Gazzaniga saved three penalties in a 2-1 win.

Alex Berenguer, Inaki Williams and Ander Herrera all missed their efforts from 12 yards.

However, Girona would later finish 16th in LaLiga, just one point above the relegation zone.

Premier League boss hinted at huge transfer after UEFA Super Cup and re-signed club legend

Premier League boss hinted at huge transfer after UEFA Super Cup and re-signed club legend - talkSPORT
Description

Gareth Bale has joined the TNT Sports line-up ahead of the new season and will cover his old club Tottenham in the Champions League.

Spurs threw away a two-goal lead with five minutes left to lose the Super Cup on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain.

Unless the Welshman dusts off his boots to play for Spurs, it won't generate the same excitement as one transfer saga after the Super Cup in 2005.

Rafael Benítez wasted little time in making waves upon his arrival at Liverpool the year before.

The Spaniard sanctioned Michael Owen's £8million move to Real Madrid only weeks after succeeding Gérard Houllier as manager.

Owen joined Liverpool aged just 12 and went on to break into the first team in 1997 before soon becoming an England regular.

The striker remains the club’s seventh-highest scorer, having fired in an impressive 158 goals in 297 games for the Reds.

Owen’s exploits on Merseyside saw him scoop the Ballon d’Or in 2001 – the last Englishman to lift the coveted award.

However, Liverpool went on to win the Champions League during the first season without him, following the Miracle of Istanbul.

Owen, meanwhile, scored 16 goals in 45 appearances during his one season at the Santiago Bernabeu before looking to return home.

Benitez initially tried playing coy on the possibility of signing a player he had agreed to sell a year earlier in the build-up to the Super Cup.

"We have not made an offer for Michael Owen and I am looking only for a centre-back, not for a centre-forward," Benitez said.

"I smile when I read in the Spanish press that we have opened talks with Real Madrid. Michael Owen is a good player but we have six players in that position and we need a right-winger and a centre-back."

Benitez also rejected his captain Steven Gerrard's claim that Liverpool could not afford to see Owen join any of their Premier League rivals.

"My priority is to work with the players I have at the moment to improve them, with Crouch, with Morientes," he added.

"I must be focused on my team while trying to sign better players but at the moment the answer is the same: we have six strikers for only two places."

Benitez's poker face was finally broken by his former Liverpool chief executive, Rick Parry, in the hours before the 2005 Super Cup.

Newcastle had agreed a surprise £17m club record deal for Owen, but the-then 25-year-old made it clear he preferred to return to Anfield.

Parry said: "There has never been a split between us and Rafa over Michael or any other player.

"It's not a no or a yes - there has been plenty of speculation and we will see next week.

"It's always encouraging when a player says he wants to come to Liverpool."

The Premier League champions eventually showed their hand after a 3-1 extra-time victory over CSKA Moscow in the 2005 Super Cup.

But with Liverpool ultimately unable to match Newcastle's offer, Owen revealed years later that he was left with a decision to make.

He told BT Sports’ ‘What I Wore’: “I spoke to Newcastle and Newcastle agreed that if I signed for them, I can do one year and then they will sell me to Liverpool for an agreed fee of £12m.

“Then if I do another year, then they’ll sell me to Liverpool for £8m, and another year for £4m.

“So every year, it would be more attractive for Liverpool to buy me back."

Benitez even alluded to such a clause ahead of Owen's return to Anfield with Newcastle in December 2005.

Robbie Fowler returns home

He said: "I can see him returning to Anfield one day.

"That could happen. Why not? He's a top player and every club is always interested in signing good players.

"We tried to sign him right until the end."

Yet a month later, Benitez was unveiling Owen's former Liverpool teammate, Robbie Fowler, over four years after his surprise exit.

"I can't really believe it's happened again," said the man dubbed 'God' by the Anfield crowd following his free transfer from Manchester City.

"I'm so happy it's frightening.

"To travel back to Anfield was great. To actually put pen to paper... well, it is something that I have wanted to happen for a long time."

Why did Owen never rejoin Liverpool?

In an interview on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE, Owen admitted he tried again to return to Liverpool after leaving Newcastle.

He said: "I didn't go from Liverpool to Manchester United because that would have been virtually impossible, but everyone knows I grew up playing for Liverpool in the academy and when I left to go to Madrid and then came back home, I wanted to go to Liverpool.

"Once I went to Newcastle… that almost broke my heart in a way because I wasn't going back to what I perceive to be my club.

"When I finished at Newcastle it was again a case of can I get to Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers said he didn't need me at the time.

"At that point, you have just got to go to whoever is the best available. Once I got over that [feeling of] is everyone going to hate me and the pain of have I ruined everything etc. etc, it was a no-brainer [to join United]. I knew everyone, I played at England with them all, I knew Sir Alex and all the rest of it.

"So to play in that stadium, live at home, I was playing in the best team at the time, I had the chance of winning; the league, the Champions League and all the rest of it, it was an absolute no-brainer.

"I had no doubts at all that was the best move career-wise to make and people have to remember that footballers, yes we have loyalties, but if we can't play for them then . . . "

Owen went on to score 17 goals in 52 games for Man United, winning the Premier League title and League Cup during his three-year spell.

He then moved to Stoke City in September 2012, which proved to be his final campaign as a professional.

Chelsea brutally troll Tottenham with social media post seconds after Thomas Frank's side throw away Super Cup

Chelsea brutally troll Tottenham with social media post seconds after Super Cup defeat - talkSPORT
Description

Chelsea took mere seconds to troll London rivals Tottenham Hotspur after their Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs were 2-0 and cruising in Udine with five minutes to play, only to be pegged back for a penalty shoot-out with two late French goals.

They then had the lead in the shoot-out, but misses from goalscorer Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel saw PSG claim their first ever UEFA Super Cup to add to their Champions League crown.

Nuno Mendes’ winning penalty came at 10.09pm UK time, and just seconds after Chelsea pressed send on the most brutal of social media posts.

The Blues sent out a message reading: “#OnThisDay exactly one month ago, Chelsea beat PSG in the Club World Cup final!”

Chelsea won the US tournament over PSG, with a commanding 3-0 win in the final, something rivals Spurs couldn’t manage despite looking well on course for an easy win.

Chelsea entered the summer tournament far from favourites after years without competing for the Premier League title.

On the other hand, PSG had just won club football's premier competition - the Champions League - with a record 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the final.

Chelsea shocked the French side with a dominant win, and for stages in Udine Spurs were well on course to do the same.

Micky van de Ven opened the scoring with a late first half goal, and PSG entered the dressing room without a shot on goal for just the fourth time under Luis Enrique.

New captain Cristian Romero made it two just three minutes into the second half and Spurs' dominance continued.

Thomas Frank's new side continued to hold their world class rivals at arm's length with relative ease in their first game under his management, but it all went awry in the final five minutes.

A long-range strike from an unlikely source got PSG into the match with Kang-In Lee the hero in the 85th minute and then it was another bench option who showed up.

A bullet header from Goncalo Ramos forced a shoot-out, where Spurs quickly took the lead.

Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur scored either side of a Vitinha miss and the London side found themselves 2-0 up once more.

However misses from Van de Ven and the re-signed Tel allowed PSG to fire in their next four, claiming the trophy and allowing Chelsea to fire out a Hall of Fame social media post.

Responding to his side's victory, PSG's star manager Luis Enrique thanked the fans after an extremely short turnaround after the Club World Cup and summer holidays.

"It's difficult to talk about this match… We trained for five or six days, it's incredible," he told Canal+.

"And all the fans who are there all the time, regardless of the result, they are there to support the team.

"For us it's very nice to have won this trophy and to be able to offer it to them."

He then praised their opponents, saying: "I think Tottenham played a very good match, they are stronger than us and are better prepared, it was a difficult situation.

"We had the ability to fight until the end of the match. I don't know if it's fair but that's football and we are happy for our fans.

"And we have to improve. I expect even more from my players, always."

Spurs are sitting so deep, all on the edge of their own box.

Three minutes remain for them to hold onto their lead...

PSG 1-2 Tottenham

Nuno Mendes has just seen a shot blocked over the bar.

And from the following corner, Spurs manage to clear.

The next attack sees Ibrahim Mbaye fall over in the box, but some big appeals are turned away by the referee.

Ousmane Dembele is booked for dissent after his appeal.

Lucas Bergvall then replaces Pape Sarr for Spurs.

PSG 1-2 Tottenham

This was their final to lose but they've conceded and it's set up a very tense finish in Italy now.

Thomas Frank's side are backs to the wall.

Can they hold on to win the Super Cup?

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

It's very hot in the stadium, with temperatures still above 30 degrees Celsius at kick-off.

Spurs come straight back out of the blocks to press high.

They win the ball back quickly and then win a throw-in that sees Kevin Danso launch a long, looping throw into the box.

It seems Thomas Frank has brought a new tactic with him to the club and it may be a real asset this season.

CHANCE! PSG 0-0 Tottenham

Mohammed Kudus brilliantly breaks away and slides his striker partner Richarlison through on the edge.

The Brazilian fires a powerful effort away, but PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier gets a strong palm on it and saves.

Rodrigo Bentancur then heads over the bar from the corner.

Spurs have been impressive so far.

Andy Townsend live on talkSPORT: "It's quite noticeable that PSG are quite behind Spurs with the legwork."

'We want to do it again'

Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario and Ben Davies are hopeful of winning a second trophy in a matter of months tonight.

Spurs hadn't won silverware in 17 years until they lifted the Europa League and now they have the Super Cup to play for.

Vicario said: "We set the tone. We want to do it again.

"We tasted the feeling and we want to taste it again. We have an opportunity tonight. We are here because we earned the right to play against PSG. It's up to us to believe.

"We can set the tone again if we want to be successful."

Davies added: "Once you get that initial feeling, you get the desire and hunger within the group that wants to do it again.

"We had our time on enjoying the result last season.

“Everyone’s focus is on the number of competitions we are in and trophies, and that starts tonight."

Up for the Super Cup

PSG's fans are creating a brilliant atmosphere in Italy.

They've been bouncing together well ahead of kick-off.

There are plenty of Spurs supporters in attendance too, as they hope to be celebrating another trophy later this evening.

We're moving closer to the Super Cup getting underway.

Unpredictable

PSG boss Luis Enrique doesn't know what to expect from Thomas Frank's Tottenham this evening.

Spurs have had the summer off and have played more pre-season games than PSG, who had to play in the Club World Cup.

That and the fact that they have a new manager makes things hard to predict heading into the Super Cup for Enrique.

"It's difficult because they recently changed their manager," he said when discussing the threat of Spurs.

"Some new players - they played a few friendly matches before [the Super Cup].

"I don't know what kind of game they are going to plan.

"It's going to be difficult because they have been training for the last month and we are in our first week but it is not an excuse.

"We are going to try and compete and do our best."

'It's impossible'

Thomas Frank has been asked how his Tottenham side plan to stop PSG's superstar winger Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

"I could say a few things but I’m probably not allowed to just kick him down," Frank joked when speaking ahead of the game.

“He is a special player, a unique talent. The way he drives with the ball and his one-on-one skills are exceptional.

“I followed him for quite a while, both in Naples and with the national team, now PSG.

“But with all due respect, he is just a human, a very good player, but we have good defenders and a good plan.

“I’m comfortable we can keep him quiet enough. It is impossible to keep him totally quiet."

Another absentee

PSG also have a standout absence in their line-up tonight.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma did not travel to Italy for the Super Cup after being told he had lost his starting spot.

Donnarumma is now expected to leave the French giants, with interest coming from Manchester City.

The Italian shotstopper released an emotional statement yesterday, saying goodbye to the PSG fans.

"To the special Paris fans," Donnarumma said. "From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain.

"Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.

"I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done.

"If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home.

"To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers.

"Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris."

Where's Bissouma?

You may have noticed that Yves Bissouma is nowhere to be seen in the Tottenham squad this evening.

And that's because Thomas Frank left the midfielder at home due to disciplinary reasons.

Frank explained in the build-up to this game: "He has been late several times and the latest time was one too many.

“With everything you need to give your players a lot of love, but also have demands and there also needs to be consequences, and this time there was a consequence for that."

He added: "For me there has been, how can I say it, a consequence for this trip and then I will follow up when I come home.

“I will park it now because there is a relatively important game.”

Team news!

The teams are in for the UEFA Super Cup!

It appears that Thomas Frank is starting with a five-at-the-back formation, with Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Kevin Danso all starting this evening.

Spurs have summer signing Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison leading the line, with Dominic Solanke returning to fitness.

James Maddison is out after suffering an ACL injury in pre-season.

As for PSG, they've named a very strong side, with Ousmane Dembele, Kvicha Kvaratskhelhia and Desire Doue starting.

Bradley Barcola is in the line-up too, as Luis Enrique goes with an attacking set-up in this big game.

PSG XI: Chevalier, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes, Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Doue, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia Dembele.

Subs: Safonov, Marin, Beraldo, Ruiz, Ramos, Lee, Hernandez, Kamara, Mbaye.

Tottenham XI: Vicario, Porro, Danso, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence, Palhinha, Sarr, Bentancur, Kudus, Richarlison.

Subs: Kinsky, Austin, Tel, Gray, Bergvall, Solanke, Johnson, Odobert, Davies, Byfield, Vuskovic.

Time for a change?

Could this be the last Super Cup played between two teams?

The Telegraph have reported that the competition could potentially become a four-team tournament.

It is usually played between the Champions League and Europa League winners, but UEFA are now looking at expanding things.

The format would change to semi-finals and a final rather than a one-off fixture.

There has been no further detail as to which other teams would qualify on top of the two European champions that feature.

On top of the number of clubs taking part changing, there could also be a unique location in store for the competition.

It could be held overseas next season, with the USA or the Middle East reported as likely destinations.

'A massive game'

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is ready for his first competitive game in charge of Spurs this evening.

And he knows how important another trophy win could be for the club and for himself in his new role.

Frank said: "I think for the club, for the team, for me, for everybody involved at Tottenham Hotspur, it's a massive game.

"A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity.

“That's how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure or whatever.

“So for me, massive opportunity and we will definitely embrace it and we will do everything."
