PSG 0-0 Tottenham LIVE: UEFA Super Cup underway as European champions meet for blockbuster clash in Italy - talkSPORT
Description

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

It's very hot in the stadium, with temperatures still above 30 degrees Celsius at kick-off.

Spurs come straight back out of the blocks to press high.

They win the ball back quickly and then win a throw-in that sees Kevin Danso launch a long, looping throw into the box.

It seems Thomas Frank has brought a new tactic with him to the club and it may be a real asset this season.

CHANCE! PSG 0-0 Tottenham

Mohammed Kudus brilliantly breaks away and slides his striker partner Richarlison through on the edge.

The Brazilian fires a powerful effort away, but PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier gets a strong palm on it and saves.

Rodrigo Bentancur then heads over the bar from the corner.

Spurs have been impressive so far.

Andy Townsend live on talkSPORT: "It's quite noticeable that PSG are quite behind Spurs with the legwork."

'We want to do it again'

Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario and Ben Davies are hopeful of winning a second trophy in a matter of months tonight.

Spurs hadn't won silverware in 17 years until they lifted the Europa League and now they have the Super Cup to play for.

Vicario said: "We set the tone. We want to do it again.

"We tasted the feeling and we want to taste it again. We have an opportunity tonight. We are here because we earned the right to play against PSG. It's up to us to believe.

"We can set the tone again if we want to be successful."

Davies added: "Once you get that initial feeling, you get the desire and hunger within the group that wants to do it again.

"We had our time on enjoying the result last season.

“Everyone’s focus is on the number of competitions we are in and trophies, and that starts tonight."

Up for the Super Cup

PSG's fans are creating a brilliant atmosphere in Italy.

They've been bouncing together well ahead of kick-off.

There are plenty of Spurs supporters in attendance too, as they hope to be celebrating another trophy later this evening.

We're moving closer to the Super Cup getting underway.

Unpredictable

PSG boss Luis Enrique doesn't know what to expect from Thomas Frank's Tottenham this evening.

Spurs have had the summer off and have played more pre-season games than PSG, who had to play in the Club World Cup.

That and the fact that they have a new manager makes things hard to predict heading into the Super Cup for Enrique.

"It's difficult because they recently changed their manager," he said when discussing the threat of Spurs.

"Some new players - they played a few friendly matches before [the Super Cup].

"I don't know what kind of game they are going to plan.

"It's going to be difficult because they have been training for the last month and we are in our first week but it is not an excuse.

"We are going to try and compete and do our best."

'It's impossible'

Thomas Frank has been asked how his Tottenham side plan to stop PSG's superstar winger Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

"I could say a few things but I’m probably not allowed to just kick him down," Frank joked when speaking ahead of the game.

“He is a special player, a unique talent. The way he drives with the ball and his one-on-one skills are exceptional.

“I followed him for quite a while, both in Naples and with the national team, now PSG.

“But with all due respect, he is just a human, a very good player, but we have good defenders and a good plan.

“I’m comfortable we can keep him quiet enough. It is impossible to keep him totally quiet."

Another absentee

PSG also have a standout absence in their line-up tonight.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma did not travel to Italy for the Super Cup after being told he had lost his starting spot.

Donnarumma is now expected to leave the French giants, with interest coming from Manchester City.

The Italian shotstopper released an emotional statement yesterday, saying goodbye to the PSG fans.

"To the special Paris fans," Donnarumma said. "From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain.

"Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.

"I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done.

"If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home.

"To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers.

"Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris."

Where's Bissouma?

You may have noticed that Yves Bissouma is nowhere to be seen in the Tottenham squad this evening.

And that's because Thomas Frank left the midfielder at home due to disciplinary reasons.

Frank explained in the build-up to this game: "He has been late several times and the latest time was one too many.

“With everything you need to give your players a lot of love, but also have demands and there also needs to be consequences, and this time there was a consequence for that."

He added: "For me there has been, how can I say it, a consequence for this trip and then I will follow up when I come home.

“I will park it now because there is a relatively important game.”

Team news!

The teams are in for the UEFA Super Cup!

It appears that Thomas Frank is starting with a five-at-the-back formation, with Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Kevin Danso all starting this evening.

Spurs have summer signing Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison leading the line, with Dominic Solanke returning to fitness.

James Maddison is out after suffering an ACL injury in pre-season.

As for PSG, they've named a very strong side, with Ousmane Dembele, Kvicha Kvaratskhelhia and Desire Doue starting.

Bradley Barcola is in the line-up too, as Luis Enrique goes with an attacking set-up in this big game.

PSG XI: Chevalier, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes, Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Doue, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia Dembele.

Subs: Safonov, Marin, Beraldo, Ruiz, Ramos, Lee, Hernandez, Kamara, Mbaye.

Tottenham XI: Vicario, Porro, Danso, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence, Palhinha, Sarr, Bentancur, Kudus, Richarlison.

Subs: Kinsky, Austin, Tel, Gray, Bergvall, Solanke, Johnson, Odobert, Davies, Byfield, Vuskovic.

Time for a change?

Could this be the last Super Cup played between two teams?

The Telegraph have reported that the competition could potentially become a four-team tournament.

It is usually played between the Champions League and Europa League winners, but UEFA are now looking at expanding things.

The format would change to semi-finals and a final rather than a one-off fixture.

There has been no further detail as to which other teams would qualify on top of the two European champions that feature.

On top of the number of clubs taking part changing, there could also be a unique location in store for the competition.

It could be held overseas next season, with the USA or the Middle East reported as likely destinations.

And he knows how important another trophy win could be for the club and for himself in his new role.

Frank said: "I think for the club, for the team, for me, for everybody involved at Tottenham Hotspur, it's a massive game.

"A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity.

“That's how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure or whatever.

“So for me, massive opportunity and we will definitely embrace it and we will do everything."

PSG had Tottenham manager compile genius player list and only one Spurs star made the cut

PSG had Tottenham manager compile genius player list and only one Spurs star made the cut - talkSPORT
Description

Mauricio Pochettino worked and played with the great and the good of football - and only a few he'd call geniuses.

The Argentine manager spent two years as a player at Paris Saint-Germain, who play his former side Tottenham in the Super Cup - before also managing them for a year after five years in the Spurs dugout.

And while playing in the French capital between 2001 and 2003, he had the pleasure of calling Ronaldinho his teammate.

One of the best in the world during his heyday, Pochettino also once shared a room with another legend of the game in Diego Maradona whom he played with at Newell's Old Boys in their native Argentina.

He later managed some of the greatest players, including Harry Kane, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

One player stood out, however.

Speaking in 2017, Pochettino explained: "I always say, 'Mousa [Dembele], in my book, you will be one of my genius players that I have been lucky to meet.'

"One was Maradona, then Ronaldinho, [Jay-Jay] Okocha and [Ivan] De La Pena. He is a genius too, Mousa Dembele.

"We always told him, 'If we had taken you at eighteen or nineteen years old, you would have become one of the best players in the world.' I would have loved to have taken him on at 18."

The PSG side featuring Pochettino and Ronaldinho also included Okocha as they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification in 2002.

Pochettino would enjoy his most successful spells as a player with Espanyol, though.

His two stints at the Spanish side both saw him win the Copa del Rey, but it was during the second which he played alongside club legend De la Pena.

The midfielder's performances saw him adored by fans of the club as he helped Espanyol reach the UEFA Cup final in 2007, a year after Pochettino's retirement.

Dembele was on the same level as those legendary figures in Pochettino's eyes.

The pair worked together for five of the Belgian's seven years at Spurs between 2012 and 2019.

He suffered from injuries, but ended up playing some of his best football under Pochettino.

What made Dembele special?

Pochettino continued: "Mousa Dembele is completely different to when we arrived here.

"He didn't play too much in his first season, he always had problems, or physical problems. I must give all credit to [the coaching team].

"Sports science and all the medical staff to create a Mousa Dembele now that is strong and can play. I think that every week if you are honest, you would agree with me.

"He has started to work very hard. We provide individual plans to every player. I think we are very happy."

His teammates thought he was head and shoulders above everyone else. When asked to name the most naturally gifted player he had played alongside, former Spurs striker Kane said: "Everyone says it, but, Mousa Dembele.

"In terms of technical, strength, power. Just incredible. We saw it in training every day. He wouldn't let anyone come close to him. Amazing ability."

Kyle Walker said similar. "He's a scandal. The only thing Dembele didn't have was assists and goals, but he had stupid talent - it shouldn't have been allowed."

Both Dembele and Pochettino left Spurs in 2019, with the latter going on to coach PSG.

He took charge of the club in January 2021 and spent 18 months in the hotseat.

During that time, PSG won three trophies, including the Ligue 1 title in Pochettino's only full season at the helm.

However, he left at the end of the 2021/22 campaign following a disappointing last 16 exit from the Champions League.

Following a season in charge of Chelsea, Pochettino is the current USA national team boss.

When is PSG vs Spurs?

His former clubs meet competitively for the first time in the Super Cup with Champions League winners PSG taking on Europa League winners Tottenham in Italy.

Their clash at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy is their first-ever competitive fixture.

It is also both clubs' maiden appearance in the curtain-raiser for the new European season.

Spurs will be hoping to win their fifth continental trophy having also been two-time UEFA Cup winners as well as Cup Winners' Cup champions in 1963.

Meanwhile, a victory for PSG would continue their silverware streak after a quadruple during the previous campaign.

Luis Enrique's side scooped the French Super Cup, Ligue 1, French Cup and Champions League before reaching the Club World Cup final.

‘All downhill’ – Tottenham signed Brazil star but he was forced to apologise after 10-game spell

Tottenham have held talks with Manchester City over a move for Savinho, but their history of Brazilians at the club isn't great.

The 21-year-old is believed to be open to making the switch to north London after just one season in Manchester.

However, City aren't interested in selling and would demand north of £50million.

Spurs are in the market for another attacking option after James Maddison suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Whilst Savinho rarely plays in attacking midfield and features more as a right-winger, he will provide much-needed depth for the squad.

If Spurs did complete a deal, Tottenham fans would be wishing Savinho would be more Lucas Moura than Gilberto da Silva Melo.

The latter infamously failed to make an impression in north London during his brief spell at White Hart Lane in the 2008-09 season.

Gilberto arrived with good pedigree, having been included in Brazil's 2006 World Cup squad and even scoring in their win over Japan.

In January 2008, Spurs sanctioned a £1.9m deal for the-then 31-year-old with six months left on his contract with Hertha Berlin.

Gilberto made history on his debut by becoming Tottenham's first Brazilian to appear for the senior side.

Unfortunately for the left-back, who could also play in midfield, his nightmare first outing meant he soon made different headlines.

He was at fault for Jefferson Farfan's winner in their UEFA Cup defeat to PSV Eindhoven, and was also booked and hooked at half-time.

What has Gilberto's record at Spurs?

In three of his first six starts for the Lilywhites, manager Ramos, and his successor, Harry Redknapp, hooked him at half-time.

He ultimately made just ten appearances for Spurs, scoring one goal, before his contract was terminated by mutual consent in 2009.

The consensus about his time at the club was no better summarised than a headline that read, "Brazil finally produce rubbish footballer."

Gilberto himself at least raised a smile when confronted with said headline, during an interview in which he apologised to Spurs fans.

“It’s true, I had a nightmare at Spurs. But I’d done well in Germany. I played for my country, and I’d won stuff in Brazil,” Gilberto told ESPN.

“Tottenham came in, and I saw it as a chance to have a proper crack at some silverware.

“I remember my debut against PSV. I tried to dribble past Jefferson Farfan. He nicked the ball from me and scored.

“Even though I was a Brazil international, I found it tough to recover, and I felt it was my fault we were losing 1-0.

“I picked up a calf injury and was subbed at half-time.

“We went out of the competition after the second leg, and I felt personally responsible.

“From that moment, it was all downhill. I tried my best at training and hoped that things would turn around. I liked London and the life there, but my confidence was shot.

“Then, Juande Ramos got the boot. Harry Redknapp came in, and he put me in the B-team at 32 years of age. That was embarrassing, playing with the U20s in empty stadiums. It was a tough time."

“I want to say sorry with all my heart to the Tottenham fans. I’m gutted that it didn’t work,” Gilberto added.

“I would have loved to have stayed, but I got branded very quickly.

“There were some great people at the club, but it was a bad time for me personally.”

In a talkSPORT poll in 2017, Spurs supporters voted him the club's worst winter signing ever.

"In a way, it's nice to be remembered, and I also kind of half-agree with what they said," he joked.

"But footballers have to get used to this sort of thing. I've talked about it on Instagram because I wanted to show how hard it can be."

UEFA Super Cup played in ‘farcical’ scenes with spectators unable to watch

Submitted by daniel on
Picture
Description

The 2025 UEFA Super Cup will be a spectacle not to be missed, which is not something always said of the European curtain-raiser.

Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain are facing Europa League champions Tottenham in Italy this week, live on talkSPORT.

Spurs are hoping to win their second major piece of silverware in less than three months in Thomas Frank's first competitive game.

The Lilywhites had previously gone 17 years without lifting a trophy before beating Manchester United in May.

In fact, it had been 41 years since Tottenham last won a European title, having beaten Anderlecht in the 1984 UEFA Cup final.

Ironically, it was their Belgian opponents who were once involved in the most farcical Super Cup ever against Spurs' domestic rivals.

In 1978, Liverpool were hoping to do the double over teams from Belgium after beating Club Brugge 1–0 in the European Cup final.

However, the Reds found themselves with it all to do against Anderlecht in the Super Cup following a 3-1 defeat in the first-leg.

“We threw it away, our attitude was wrong and we were careless," Liverpool manager Bob Paisley summised to local media afterwards.

“Anderlecht are a great team going forward, but we never attacked them as we should.

“Our approach seems to have gone a bit wrong and we've lost our scoring touch where earlier in the season our finishing was great."

Liverpool fans hoping to see a response in the second leg were disappointed, but not from a lack of effort on the players' part.

The return meeting at Anfield was staged six days before Christmas, and freezing fog meant the match became part of Liverpool folklore.

Emlyn Hughes and David Fairclough scored in a 2-1 win, but lost 4-3 on aggregate, and the weather became the key talking point.

Conditions proved to be so bad that it made it difficult for supporters to identify players on the pitch.

To the point that Liverpool goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic, deputising for the injured Ray Clemence, was tasked with providing the updates.

Ian Hargraves wrote in his match report: “Hughes’ opening goal was wittily greeted with the chant ‘Oggy, Oggy, tell us who scored!’”

As reported by Liverpool's website, 'Fairclough’s late winner went almost undetected by Kopites at the other end of the ground who had to chant, 'Annie Road, Annie Road, tell us who scored!'"

Liverpool boss Paisley said: “I’m not complaining about the result but it was never a real match. I couldn’t make any substitutions even if I’d wanted because I couldn’t see who was doing what!

“A match like this, between two leading teams, should be played in better weather, say in April.

“I know it's difficult, but it's farcical when good players like these have to slither about in fog and can't see each other."

Referee Nicolae Rainea defended his decision to allow the match to go ahead despite heavy fog, as per archive reports: “When I went out there before kick-off I decided I could see well enough and so I decided to play.

“I am afraid many spectators would not get a very clear view but there was no time I had any thoughts of abandoning the game."

PSG vs Tottenham

Fast forward nearly half a century, and Tottenham fans certaintly won't be able to ask Gianluigi Donnarumma what the score is.

The PSG goalkeeper has been left out of their squad for the clash on Wednesday night, which you can listen to live on talkSPORT.

Donnarumma is out of contract in the French capital at the end of next season, meaning he could leave on a free.

Joao Neves will also miss the Super Cup clash with Tottenham following his red card in the Club World Cup final.

Why have Tottenham not played in the Super Cup before?

Prior to their Bilbao triumph, Spurs have won the Europa League before in its previous guise as the UEFA Cup.

The first was in the inaugural year of the competition in 1972 - the season before the European Super Cup was introduced.

However, until the new millennium, UEFA pitted the Champions League winners against the victors of the defunct Cup Winners' Cup.

The UEFA Super Cup will raise the curtain on the European club season on Wednesday night when Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain take on Europa League heroes Tottenham.

PSG won an unprecedented quadruple last season under Luis Enrique, but they were disappointed to lose the FIFA Club World Cup final in the USA this summer.

Tottenham endured a miserable Premier League campaign under former boss Ange Postecoglou, but he did manage to guide his team to Europa League glory before being replaced by Thomas Frank in the summer.

The two teams meet at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, with the game due to start at 20:00 BST on Wednesday.

PSG to flex their muscles in Udine

PSG cruised to several titles last season and they built their success around their dominance in Ligue 1. Luis Enrique's team won the Ligue 1 crown by 19 points ahead of Marseille, while they also won the Coupe de France, Trophee des Champions and UEFA Champions League.

The French champions beat Brest, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Inter Milan in the knockout stages of the Champions League to win the trophy for the first time and they are expected to have too much class for Tottenham.

Spurs won the Europa League under former boss Postecoglou, but Frank faces a tough challenge in his first competitive match as Tottenham coach.

While PSG lost 3-0 to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final, they won by two clear goals in five of their seven games in the tournament.

Spurs lost 4-0 to Bayern Munich in their most recent friendly, and PSG are a better team than the Bavarians. All signs point to a routine win for Enrique's troops.

Tiredness may help Spurs get on the scoresheet

PSG were relatively dominant at the Club World Cup, as they kept five clean sheets in seven games at the tournament.

Only Botafogo and Chelsea were able to score past PSG's resilient defence, but Spurs may be able to have some joy despite several selection issues.

Frank has lost James Maddison for the majority of the season due to an ACL injury, while Dejan Kulusevski is also sidelined. Striker Dominic Solanke has missed several weeks of pre-season due to injury and Wednesday's game may come too soon.

However, Wednesday's match will be PSG's first for a month and they could be excused for being rusty in the final stages. They should rack up the goals and win comfortably, but Spurs may be able to add a consolation goal in Udine.

Dembele to lead the charge

PSG ace Ousmane Dembele was the star of the show last season for the French club.

He started 20 matches last season in Ligue 1 scoring 21 goals, and he also grabbed six assists.

In Europe, Dembele scored eight goals and provided six assists in 15 appearances in the Champions League and he is the man for the big moment.

Dembele will take on a Spurs defence that has conceded five goals in two games and he has the quality to punish Frank's men.

'One too many' - Tottenham star Yves Bissouma booted out of Super Cup squad for disciplinary reasons - talkSPORT
Description

Yves Bissouma will not play for Tottenham Hotspur in the Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain due to ill-discipline.

Spurs will face the Champions League winners on Wednesday, live on talkSPORT, as they battle for more European silverware.

But Bissouma won't feature at Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy as Thomas Frank revealed he reported late for duties on numerous occasions.

"Bissouma has not travelled with the group for disciplinary reasons," the Spurs boss said in his press conference.

Frank added: "He’s been late several times and now this time was just one too many.

"With everything you need to give your players a lot of love and there needs to be demands and consequences."

Last season, Bissouma was suspended by Spurs for posting a video of himself inhaling nitrous oxide on social media.

The midfielder apologised but was not involved in their first Premier League match of the campaign at Leicester City.

Now he will miss the opportunity to win another European trophy with Spurs.

Bissouma played the entirety of the 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United in May.

The north London side lifted their first piece of silverware in 17 years as a result.

Europa League success qualifies them for the Super Cup, with PSG in contention for the trophy after their first Champions League win.

Tottenham team news

Frank also provided updates on other members of the Spurs squad ahead of their huge test.

"The players [that are] longer-term are just part of the group. Dom [Solanke] is the positive one, he’s available for selection tomorrow.

"Destiny [Udogie] is closer, and getting closer to training with the group."

He added: "I think I have a good squad. Of course this transfer window we are still in the market. Doing everything we can to make the best possible squad ready for the 1 September.

"There are a few things in the air but the last two days we trained very well."

PSG will be without Joao Neves due to his red card in their Club World Cup final against Chelsea.

Gianluigi Donnarumma is also absent from the squad amid reports of him leaving this summer.

Spurs had a mixed pre-season campaign with wins over Reading and Arsenal before a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

After the Super Cup, they host Burnley on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.

A trip to Manchester City follows before the visit of Bournemouth, with West Ham and Brighton also making up their first five tests.

Description

Gianluigi Donnarumma will not be involved in the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has been left out of their squad for the clash on Wednesday night, which you can listen to live on talkSPORT.

Donnarumma is out of contract in the French capital at the end of next season, meaning he could leave on a free.

However, the Italy star could be sold this summer with Manchester United and Chelsea among the clubs to have been linked with the player.

His expected departure follows the arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille with the Frenchman viewed as PSG's no.1 for the foreseeable.

Chevalier has signed a five-year deal with the Champions League winners.

talkSPORT understands PSG consider Chevalier as their new first-choice goalkeeper heading into the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Donnarumma’s relationship with the club is considered over following his exclusion from the UEFA Super Cup squad.

A move to the Premier League is now seen as the most likely resolution to his future.

He could remain at the club until the expiration of his contract, though.

However, PSG will not offer Donnarumma a new deal and would prefer he leaves the club now.

Donnarumma joined PSG from AC Milan in 2021 but has not extended his initial five-year deal since.

During his time with the club, he has made 161 appearances, keeping 56 clean sheets.

The Italian has also won ten major trophies including the treble last season and four league titles.

PSG face Spurs in the UEFA Super Cup at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.

UEFA Super Cup team news

Luis Enrique's will be without midfielder Joao Neves for their meeting with the Europa League winners.

The Portuguese is suspended after being sent off in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea.

He was penalised for a hair pull on Marc Cucurella following a VAR review as the Blues ran out 3-0 winners at MetLife Stadium.

As for Spurs, Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie have been named in their 22-man squad list but both remain injury doubts.
