Description

Midfielder Tonali and winger Murphy start at the expense of captain Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Elanga in the only two changes made by head coach Eddie Howe following Saturday's emphatic 4-1 win at Everton.

That means Aaron Ramsdale is in goal once again for what will be his first Premier League start at St. James', with Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall flanking Malick Thiaw and stand-in skipper Dan Burn in defence.

Tonali anchors a midfield, with Lewis Miley - a goalscorer in that weekend win on Merseyside - keeping his place alongside Joelinton.

And leading goalscorer Nick Woltemade will lead the line, with support from Murphy and Harvey Barnes as United look to extend their fine recent home record against Thomas Frank's Spurs.

There is plenty of firepower on the bench, with Guimarães, Elanga and Anthony Gordon all named alongside Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock.

Youngsters Alex Murphy and Sean Neave are involved too, with Fabian Schär and John Ruddy completing the list of substitutes named by Howe for their second meeting with Spurs of the campaign so far, with the Magpies having won 2-0 in the Carabao Cup in October.

Newcastle United: Aaron Ramsdale; Lewis Hall, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Malick Thiaw, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Nick Woltemade, Dan Burn (c), Lewis Miley

This evening we welcome Thomas Frank and his Tottenham Hotspur squad to St. James’ Park. Both teams met just a month ago in the Carabao Cup, so we are well aware of the quality Tottenham have and the threat they pose, and we will need to be at our very best to handle that tonight.

In our last home match against Manchester City, we were delighted with both the performance and the result. Coming off the back of some difficult results and an international break, we knew we needed to respond and the players started the match on the front foot and looked a danger each time we attacked.

We didn’t get the reward we deserved in the first half, but it came when Harvey Barnes put us ahead midway through the second half. City are always capable of scoring and five minutes later they found a way back into the match. The players reacted extremely well to this setback and just two minutes later, another goal from Harvey restored our lead, and an outstanding collective effort to see out the game gave us three valuable points and a memorable win.

We then travelled to Marseille in our latest UEFA Champions League match where Harvey continued his excellent goalscoring run with an early goal, and we had chances to add to this in a first half where we were a constant threat. Marseille scored twice straight after half time, and while we weren’t able to find a way back into the match, the players never stopped looking for a second goal on a night we felt we deserved more.

We then headed to Merseyside just a few days later to face Everton and made an even faster start when Malick Thiaw headed home in the first minute. Importantly we built on this and Lewis Miley doubled our lead midway through the half. An excellent first half display was capped off by Nick Woltemade who added a third just before half time. We continued where we left off after the break and a second goal from Malick secured the points.

In what has been an intense period of fixtures, there are so many positives to reflect on. Back-to-back Premier League wins makes a big difference in such a tight league, as does winning away from home, which we know we need to build on. The Everton result was very much a squad victory and it highlights just how important every single player will be to our season, as well as the quality we have in our dressing room.

Most of all, it was so good to reward our incredible fans who travelled to Everton with a win, and sharing this with you after the game was really special. We know many of you had a difficult night in France, and the support you all continue to give us makes such a difference. Thank you for being the very best supporters any team could ask for, and we will continue to give everything possible in return.

Eddie Howe.

"We'll see how close he is" - Eddie Howe provides update on Yoane Wissa's availability - Newcastle United
Description

The Magpies host Thomas Frank's side at St. James' Park, targeting three consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since April, and head into the league contest following Saturday's impressive 4-1 triumph at Everton, United's first English top-flight away victory of the 2025/26 season.

Newcastle have already faced Spurs this season, with goals from Fabian Schär and Nick Woltemade sealing a 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup 33 days ago, and Howe provided an encouraging update on Wissa after the DR Congo international featured in a training match last week after initially training with the Magpies squad for the first time since completing a Deadline Day move from Brentford.

Here are some of the boss' main talking points from Monday morning's pre-match media briefing, held at the Newcastle United Media Centre...

On the injury statuses of Yoane Wissa, Sven Botman and Nick Pope...

"Yoane participated in an 11v11 training game while we were at Everton. He'll have another one at some stage this week and we'll see how close he is.

"With Sven, he's going to see a specialist in the next couple of days to get a definitive opinion on whether he needs an injection or whether he's able to rest for a few days and resume training.

"No further update from Saturday. He [Nick] is one of a number of players we'll analyse early this week and try to get a proper diagnosis."

On finding consistency... "It's vitally important we find the consistency we're searching for. It seems like we're going between Champions League and Premier League and not quite finding that sweet spot we've been searching for all season. Hopefully this is the turning point for us. Every opponent we face in the Premier League is so difficult and now we face Tottenham who are a very good team with their own strengths. We'll put our plan in place to try and find a way to win."

On Malick Thiaw, who scored his first goals for Newcastle United since arriving from AC Milan last summer in last weekend's victory against the Toffees...

"It's an interesting one with Malick because he's ended up, if you look back at our set plays, getting his head on quite a bit so his movement, his aggression, his timing is really good.

"But he hadn't put the finishing touches to that in the way he did on Saturday with two great headers. It's great to see that work coming good for us. The importance of set play goals, we've discussed so many times. It wins and loses you games so it's great to see us on the right side of it, hopefully that continues."

On Lewis Miley, who became the youngest player since Charles N'Zogbia in September 2005 to produce a goal and assist in a Premier League match for Newcastle last weekend...

"He's there on merit and he's fighting for a starting place. He's impressing me with how he's training and how he's preparing himself for every opportunity he gets. It was a big moment for him on Saturday.

"He wanted the ball, he was very good with the ball, that was key for us. He played with calmness and control. He set a goal up, scored a goal - it couldn't have gone any better, really."

On Aaron Ramsdale, who made his 250th career appearance in Saturday's 4-1 win against Everton...

"I'm sure he felt good returning back to Newcastle, as we all did, after the game. He can be very pleased, it's a really good start for him and I'm sure he's in a really good place."

On Anthony Elanga...

"The first transition of the game right from kick-off is him running the length of the pitch onto a pass from Nick and almost scoring. That set the tone for us and he can be very pleased with his contribution.

The Magpies looked to have gained all three points when Anthony Gordon converted a late penalty in a dramatic finale in which Bruno Guimarães' fourth home goal of the campaign had been cancelled out by Spurs skipper Romero.

But Romero had other ideas and his spectacular stoppage time effort meant United had to settle for a share of the spoils at St. James' Park.

The frenetic last few minutes were a far cry from what had gone before, with only a handful of genuine openings for either side.

In the fourth minute, Lewis Hall won possession and skilfully advanced towards the box before sending a low shot inches wide then, seconds later, Jacob Murphy crossed from the right and Nick Woltemade rose highest but couldn't direct his header on target.

Hall made a vital interception from a dangerous Brennan Johnson cross before Lewis Miley tested Guglielmo Vicario after strong work from Harvey Barnes to win the ball from Lucas Bergvall before cutting back for the teenage midfielder, who had scored from similar range at Everton three days earlier.

Just after the half-hour mark, a speculative cross-shot from Murphy drifted the wrong side of the far post, then Joelinton hit the woodwork from a narrow angle.

But Spurs almost took the lead against the run of play when Bergvall's audacious flick from a drilled Mohammed Kudus centre zipped just over the bar at the Gallowgate End.

Guimarães replaced Sandro Tonali at half time and shortly after the restart, Barnes was denied by Vicario after a brilliant burst from the winger, before Woltemade's follow-up was headed off the line by Kevin Danso.

Then it was Johnson's turn to make a last-gasp clearance, preventing Tino Livramento's 20-yard volley from hitting the back of the net with Vicario beaten.

However, there was no stopping Guimarães in the 71st minute. Fellow sub Gordon - who had only just entered the fray - was positive and direct on the left, finding Woltemade in the box, and the German laid the ball off for the United captain to finish first time and break the deadlock.

Vicario did well to parry a low shot from Miley soon afterwards, but in the 78th minute Romero equalised, stooping to head a Kudus cross beyond Aaron Ramsdale.

United quickly regained the lead when, after a VAR intervention from Paul Tierney, referee Tom Bramall was sent to the monitor and pointed to the spot, with Rodrigo Bentacur adjudged to have held Dan Burn in the box. With just four minutes of normal time remaining, Gordon made no mistake from 12 yards.

There were nine minutes added on, though, and that was enough time for Romero to strike for a second time, this time with an overhead kick, with Spurs' second effort on target.

Newcastle goalscorer Nick Woltemade, speaking to Sky Sports:

"Joe [Willock] had the ball and I wanted to go behind the centre back and luckily the goalkeeper was coming out, so I just had to head it in.

"I think I play different from the other strikers they had here. I think the team after every game get to know me better. I just want the ball at my feet most of the time but I can help the team and if we all come into it I think we can get really good results.

"This team is so easy for me to come here, new country, a new language, I feel welcome here even from the first day everyone was talking to me.

"I think we all have a good connection which makes it easier for me and even for the other new players."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports:

"Really pleased because I think when you make the changes we did you hope to see a performance that's in line with our identity and our expectations. I thought the pressing early on in the game and general attitude of the players was very good.

"I think with the way we work we like to think regardless of the changes we make they deliver a Newcastle performance in line with our expectations. It's most important that our attitude is right from minute one and the will to win that you need and we had. Individually I thought there were some really good performances, collectively we were strong."

On scoring from a corner: [It's] something we've worked really hard on lately in our game and I think we have the height and power to cause teams problems. Its great to see a great delivery from Sandro [Tonali] and Fabian's [Schar] header was top class. He's always had a goal in him, he's always had that creative side of him game and it was a great moment for him."

Fabian Schär fired the hosts ahead at St. James' Park, heading the ball home from Sandro Tonali's inviting corner, before Nick Woltemade's header shortly after the restart doubled the Magpies' lead.

The Magpies then saw out the cup tie to record a third successive win across all competitions as well as securing an eighth clean sheet of the 2025/26 season in the process, and maintain the defence of their Carabao Cup crown.

Eddie Howe made eight changes from Saturday's 2-1 victory against Fulham, with only Woltemade, Malick Thiaw and Dan Burn retaining their places from last weekend's last-gasp win against the Cottagers.

United, targeting a fourth consecutive Carabao Cup quarter-final, began the cup contest in positive fashion as Thiaw went close to netting his first goal for the club since his summer move from AC Milan, with the German's close-range header from Sandro Tonali's free-kick parried by Antonín Kinský before Joe Willock saw a first-time shot at goal blocked by João Palhinha.

Jacob Ramsey, also targeting a maiden strike for the Magpies after joining the club from Aston Villa last summer, took his turn in front of goal after latching onto Dan Burn's dangerous pass but saw his powerful drive blocked by Spurs skipper Pedro Porro.

Thiaw produced a crucial last-ditch challenge to prevent Richarlison from firing an attempt at goal, with the 24-year-old centre-back tracking the Brazilian's run towards goal before blocking the effort out for a throw-in to the delight of the home crowd.

Newcastle, targeting a fourth win in a row against Tottenham, took the lead in the 24th minute courtesy of Schär as the Swiss defender rose high from Tonali's teasing corner before guiding a firm header beyond Kinský.

The hosts preserved their one-goal cushion shortly after despite Spurs going close to levelling the cup tie, with Richarlison failing to connect with Lucas Bergvall's teasing pass across the penalty area before the Spurs forward, minutes later, failed to place the ball into the net from Brennan Johnson's cross-cum shot.

Barnes struck the crossbar for the hosts before half-time as the left winger latched onto Thiaw's intended shot at goal following Tonali's dangerous cross into the box, before his acrobatic volley thundered onto the woodwork.

Newcastle extended their advantage in the 50th minute as Woltemade netted his sixth goal of the season across all competitions. After Thiaw regained possession before finding Willock, the latter lofted a delightful cross into the German's path who beat Kinsk ý to the lofted ball before heading into an empty net.

Aaron Ramsdale, who made his competitive Magpies bow in last month's 4-1 win against Bradford City, produced an excellent stop to prevent Pape Matar Sarr from halving the deficit, blocking the Senegalese midfielder's powerful strike at goal with his left arm before Porro's cross from the byline was crucially turned out for a corner by Schär.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper was alert once again after producing an unorthodox save to deny Richarlison, with the Brazilian's effort from Porro's dangerous cross striking his body before the loose ball was cleared to safety.

Newcastle almost netted a third in the closing stages as Schär's wonderful curling cross was met by Anthony Elanga at the back post before his intended pass to substitute William Osula struck Kevin Danso's head before flying inches wide of the right-hand post.

The full-time whistle was met by a rapturous applause as the hosts sealed a fourth win in a row at St. James' Park, with hopes of a third trip to Wembley Stadium in the last four campaigns remaining on course.

Newcastle United: Aaron Ramsdale, Fabian Schär, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Malick Thiaw, Emil Krafth (Kieran Trippier 71), Anthony Elanga (Anthony Gordon 89), Nick Woltemade (William Osula 71), Joe Willock (Joelinton 71), Dan Burn (c), Jacob Ramsey (Bruno Guimarães 79).
