Description

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United manager, speaking to TNT Sports:

On the win: "Good performance from us tonight. A strange game because I don't think we deserved to be level when Tottenham scored against the run of play. Big credit to the lads because the game could have got away from us but we responded really well, scored a second goal, and thankfully defended the last few minutes really well.

On Ramsey's strike: “Really good goal. I mean, he's such a good technical player and I thought you saw that.

“I thought the two number eights today for us, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey, were excellent today. Physically really good.

“I thought we controlled the first half in part due to them and Bruno's performance. So I was really happy and delighted he scored, because I think he needed that sort of recognition because his recent performances have been very good.”

Jacob Ramsey, Newcastle United's match-winner, speaking to TNT Sports:

On finally getting off the mark in black and white: “It has been a while. I have been playing different positions and today was playing a little bit higher up. The manager is demanding I need to get my numbers up and thankfully I got my goal today.”

Thomas Frank, Tottenham Hotspur manager, speaking to TNT Sports:

Match Report. Tottenham Hotspur 1 Newcastle United 2 - Newcastle United
Description

After Joe Willock had seen his strike disallowed after a VAR check at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Malick Thiaw prodded home his fourth goal of the season in first half stoppage time to give Eddie Howe's side a deserved lead at the end of a half in which they dominated.

Archie Gray volleyed Spurs back onto level terms after the restart, but Ramsey's well-taken second with just over 20 minutes remaining gave the Magpies their first win in six and alleviated some of the pressure on Howe's charges, who move up to tenth in the Premier League table.

The United head coach made four changes to his side for the trip to the capital, with Dan Burn, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon coming into the starting 11 at the expense of Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali, Jacob Murphy and Yoane Wissa.

Elanga in particular started brightly in North London, and was instrumental in forcing a couple of early corners before crossing for Sven Botman to head over.

Xavi Simons dragged a shot through Kieran Trippier's legs and into the sidenetting for the hosts, but Willock went even closer for the Magpies, firing just wide of the target after some neat build-up play involving Harvey Barnes, Gordon and Bruno Guimarães.

Elanga could have felt a little aggrieved not to have an assist to show from his energetic start, with Barnes backheeling a low cross from the Swedish international straight at Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario. Ramsey then latched on to a Burn knock-down just over quarter of an hour in, but didn't connect cleanly with the strike. He tried again before the half hour, whistling a powerful shot just past the upright as United continued to press.

A couple of minutes before the break, United thought they had moved in front. Ramsey's through ball released Willock down the middle, and the former Arsenal man cut inside and buried a shot beyond Vicario and into the bottom right-hand corner. It was a superb finish but after a protracted VAR check, the goal was ruled out for offside, with Willock's forehead ever so fractionally ahead of the last man when Ramsey played him in.

It was a very tight call but Newcastle's disappointment didn't last long. Willock had a hand in Thiaw's opener - his cross for the German international was an excellent one - and after the centre back's header was parried by Vicario, Thiaw followed in to prod home the deadlock-breaker deep in stoppage time.

The Magpies started the second half well too, with Gordon and Willock constant threats and Elanga seeing a penalty appeal waved away after falling under the challenge of Djed Spence. Ramsey then saw two efforts blocked from successive Guimarães corners before Simons felled Willock as he shaped to shoot. Again, referee Anthony Taylor was unmoved.

Spurs' best move of the game brought their first real chance seven minutes after the restart. It owed much to the work of Gray on the right, with the youngster skipping past a challenge and driving into the box before squaring for substitute Mathys Tel, whose finish was high and wayward. Pape Matar Sarr then forced Nick Pope into a smart save with a drive from distance as Thomas Frank's side rallied.

They were rewarded for their improved showing in the second half when Sarr turned a corner back into the six-yard box and Gray hooked in a leveller from point-blank range to buoy Frank's men, who had looked firmly second best in the first half.

It didn't deter United, though. After Gordon's mazy dribble brought him back into the Spurs box, his lay-off into the path of Ramsey was perfectly weighted - as was the former Aston Villa man's low finish with his unfavoured left foot, which gave the Magpies the lead once more.

And it was a lead they held despite some late Spurs desperation, with Micky van der Ven lashing over, to secure a welcome victory ahead of two crucial FA Cup and Champions League clashes to come with Aston Villa and Qarabağ FK respectively.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Anthony Gordon (Will Osula 88), Harvey Barnes, Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga (Sandro Tonali 75), Joe Willock (Nick Woltemade 88), Dan Burn, Bruno Guimarães (c) (Lewis Hall 90), Jacob Ramsey (Jacob Murphy 75)

The Magpies impressed in North London from the early stages, with Joe Willock putting the away side ahead before a marginal offside call saw the goal chalked off.

Moments later, however, Malick Thiaw would put United in front as he poked home from close range. The centre-back also enjoyed a solid showing at the opposite end of the pitch as he battled with Dominic Solanke throughout.

After Archie Gray's equaliser, Jacob Ramsey would score what turned out to be the winner for Eddie Howe's side; his first goal since joining the club in the summer.

Willock, who is enjoying a run of games in the team, was another standout star, alongside Anthony Elanga, who earned praise for his display on the right of Newcastle's attack.

Latest. Eddie Howe's team news update: Gordon and Miley latest ahead of Spurs trip - Newcastle United
Description

Gordon missed Saturday's defeat to Brentford after being withdrawn during last Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final loss at Manchester City.

And teenage midfielder Miley hasn't featured since the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain last month.

But head coach Howe refused to rule the pair out of the midweek trip to face Thomas Frank's Spurs, though he did concede that the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium had come to soon for Joelinton.

Here are some of the main talking points from his pre-match media briefing on Monday:

On Miley, Gordon and Joelinton...

"Miley, I need to see today - we'll get another update on his progress. He got a nasty bang to his leg so it's like a sort of dead leg that's dragged on a little bit longer than we thought, so we'll see how he is.

"Gordon, we'll make a check on today and see how he's progressing. Hopefully a big improvement in him.

"Joelinton won't make this game."

On one of the toughest spells of his reign...

"I think (it is) any time when you're not getting the results that you want. I don't think performances have been particularly bad - statistically we're still pretty strong in every game, but the results certainly haven't matched that.

"It's been a difficult run of games, it will continue to be a difficult run of games for us, but that's where we all need to show our strength of character, resolve, resilience and our feeling of how important this is to us. That needs to show, most importantly, on the pitch."

On the need for unity...

"I think if you don't have that, you lose everything. At the moment we still have that, and that's the most important thing. The supporters, even on Saturday, again were incredible for us. That's never taken for granted - that's never, from our side, expected. We have to earn it.

"We have to continue to have the respect of our supporters, and the only way we can do that is with our intention in the next game, with how we attack the next game, with everything we give off with our body language - the supporters will feed off it, and we need to make sure it's a positive response. I'm confident it will be, and I can't thank the supporters for their loyalty enough."

On where the Magpies must improve...

"I think firstly we have to defend better. When you look back at the last run of games, we haven't defended our goal well enough and that's cost us those games. It's a simple thing to say and sometimes a difficult thing to execute, but we need to find solutions to our defensive vulnerabilities.

"And of course we need to be more clinical the other way. The two things go hand-in-hand. We've not defended well enough and we haven't been clinical enough at the other end, so it's a bad mix and that's a big issue for us."

On Saturday's result and moving on...

"I was really disappointed on Saturday with the result. We've tried to take ownership of that, and now we focus on the future. Hopefully we'll have a good day's training today, and a massive game tomorrow."
