Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg): Postecoglou lives to fight another day as Solanke pen earns Spurs Europa semi spot - The Sun
Description

ANYONE who thinks Tottenham’s players have given up on Ange Postecoglou should take a look at James Maddison putting himself in the line of fire in Frankfurt.

The England man surely knew he was in for an almighty clattering by goalkeeper Kaua Santos when he rose to head a long ball midway late on in the first half.

But he put himself in harm’s way anyway - and won a vital penalty in the process, stuck away by Dominic Solanke.

Maddison’s act of bravery, which saw him subbed soon after because of the pain, paved the way to a massive win for Spurs last night (THU) that kept their Europa League dream alive - and, quite possibly, Postecoglou in a job.

There was a very real danger that had Spurs come unstuck in Germany, the Aussie would have received his P45 in the following days.

A Europa League exit would have capped a miserable campaign with no trophy and a dire Prem campaign where Spurs are languishing in 15th after 17 defeats.

It was a genuine case of win or bust - but thankfully, Postecoglou’s players came up trumps with a committed and mature performance just when he needed it most.

All the talk leading up to this game - aside from Postecoglou’s future - had been about how his side were going to handle the cauldron of the Deutsche Bank Park.

Eintracht’s hostile arena certainly lived up to its billing as their fans raucously cheered and bounced their way relentlessly throughout the game.

A banner was unfurled before kick-off with a message that translated to “the Eagles are on the hunt”.

Eintracht’s most dangerous predator on the pitch, Arsenal target Hugo Ekitike, looked to pounce on his prey right from the off.

The in-form striker, who netted a stunner in the 1-1 draw in the first leg, raced onto an early long ball right down the middle.

But in Micky van de Ven, Spurs have the fastest man ever recorded in the Premier League, and he sprinted back to put in a brilliant, last-ditch tackle before crashing into his own goalie.

It was a let-off for Postecoglou’s side, who were then handed another boost when World Cup final-scoring Mario Gotze had to be subbed off on 17 minutes with a hamstring injury.

Though the deafening noise from the fans did not cease for a second in the driving Frankfurt rain, Spurs were weathering the storm on the pitch.

Uncharacteristically for this Postecoglou side, they were putting in a mature, controlled performance, slowing the game down when they could and taking few risks.

Mathys Tel then offered the visitors’ first flash of attacking threat with an excellent strike towards the far corner which Santos turned wide.

It was a fine save from the Brazilian, but what he did next seemed downright dangerous.

Maddison had flicked on Cristian Romero’s long ball but then was flattened by a towering Santos.

Amazingly, ref Davide Massa did not give the penalty straight away, leaving Spurs’ bench, including sub Richarlison, incensed.

But the Italian changed his mind on viewing the pitchside monitor and promptly booked Santos.

Tel picked up the ball having netted a spot-kick against Southampton earlier this month but eventually handed it to Solanke.

The England man had not netted for 11 games, so Spurs fans would have been understandably worried as he prepared his short run-up.

They needn’t have, though, as Solanke coolly sent Santos the wrong way to put Spurs one up.

Maddison was looking a little dazed from the collision and holding his hip.

He tried to carry on but minutes later had to give up the ghost, hugging Postecoglou as he came off, with Dejan Kulusevski sent on in his place.

Tempers were starting to flare both in the stands and on the pitch.

And when Brennan Johnson caught Nathaniel Brown with a naughty late foul, a shoving match ensued, with the Welshman being booked and Jan Fiesser, one of the assistants to Frankfurt boss Dino Toppmoller, being sent off.

Spurs had passed their first-half test with flying colours, but knew they were in for another difficult exam after the break.

One false move could undo all the hard work and they were left thanking their lucky stars when a super free-kick from Gotze’s replacement Fares Chaibi whistled narrowly wide.

It was not as near as Cristian Romero’s header from Pedro Porro’s corner on the hour, however, as the Argentine came agonisingly close to a crucial second.

Rodrigo Bentancur followed suit with a header over from another Porro corner to ratchet the tension up another notch.

The game was on a knife-edge and Spurs would have been sliced open were it not for a terrific Guglielmo Vicario save to deny Chaibi, before a Rasmus Kristensen header bounced the wrong side of the post.

Ex-Leeds man Kristensen had his head in his hands as he somehow drilled wide from close range.

It was a lucky escape but one that Postecoglou’s men deserved for their bodies-on-the-line performance that showed what they think of their under-fire manager.

James Maddison was involved in a horror collision in the first half, which saw Spurs awarded a penalty, with Dominic Solanke stepping up to score it.

Mathys Tel originally stepped up to take the penalty, but Ange Postecoglou appeared to tell the French forward to let Solanke take the kick, in the absence of captain Son Heung-Min.

The second half saw chances few and far between, but Spurs were able to hold on, giving them something to celebrate in a torrid season.

Postecoglou super proud of Spurs

It is almost certainly the highlight of Ange Postecoglou's time at Tottenham.

With the Aussie's job on the line, Spurs travelled to the cauldron of Deutsche Bank Park and produced a dogged display full of heart and character.

And after wild celebrations at full time, Postecoglou couldn't hide his pride he had for his team.

It was good. You know what you're up against in the away leg of a European quarter-final. We had to work hard, we had to defend, we had to be well organised. I couldn't be prouder of the lads, the togetherness of the lads, we earned the right to go through. There's been a fair bit of noise around the team, but you wouldn't know it - they don't care. They've just been so focused on achieving what we wanted to. I'm super proud of the lads.

Match stats from Deutsche Bank Park

Solanke: We want trophies

Tottenham matchwinner Dominic Solanke admitted that it's been a tough season, but insists it can end in glory with Ange Postecoglou in charge.

Speaking after the heroic 1-0 win in Frankfurt, the Spurs striker responded to a question about his manager's future by pointing out they have a great opportunity to claim silverware despite all the criticism the club have faced.

We haven't had the best season in the Premier League, but ultimately we want to win trophies but we have a good chance of doing that this year in this cup.

Dominic Solanke

From Tom Barclay at Deutsche Bank Park

Ange Postecoglou is bear-hugging all his players after an absolutely massive win for his side out here in Frankfurt.

There was a very real danger that he could have lost his job had Spurs lost here.

But now he has Tottenham dreaming they can go all the way in this competition and win their first trophy in 17 years.

His team provided their most committed and mature performance of his tenure just when he needed it most.

Full time - E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

A huge result for Tottenham Hotspur. A huge result for Ange Postecoglou.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

...and now Destiny Udogie is taking the ball downfield.

Sarr is telling him to go for the empty goal, but he's happy to wind the clock down...

...and there goes the final whistle!!

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

It earns him his customary yellow, but more worryingly gifts a free-kick to Frankfurt 30 yards from goal.

Hold tight, Tottenham fans.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

The home side pack the box and despite a sea of bodies rising to the ball, it travels right through where Udogie wins a throw.

Meanwhile, two Spurs players - Sarr and Romero - are down, and undoubtedly eating up time.

The refere, responding to the whistles from the crowd, dramatically points to his watch as if to tell them that this will be added back on.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

The board goes up, and there will be five minutes of stoppage time for Spurs to see out.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

There will be no playing out from the back here.

The Italian drops to the floor, and when he gets back up, he will be launching it downfield.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

It's pure panic stations back there at times with Frankfurt coming time and time and time again.

Whenever Spurs to get a foot in, they are thumping it whatever part of the pitch they can.

Can the Premier League side hold on?

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

The Leeds loanee is often Frankfurt's furthest forward player, but he's not missed good chances with his head, right foot and now left.

The right-back scuffs this effort straight at Vicario while unmarked ten yards out.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

With play built-up on the left, Tottenham are caught out on over the right by a 2 on 1 overload.

A cross trickles into the path of Kristensen, who has the whole goal to aim at, before he slams his left-footer wide of the far post.

A big, big chance goes begging!

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

Forward Mathys Tel is withdrawn and on comes the battling midfield Pape Sarr.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Bentancur has been cautioned for a foul on Can Uzun.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

Off go Hugo Larsson and Nathaniel Brown.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

Mathys Tel twice plays his team into trouble, and it ends with Kristensen drilling a cross in from the right for Chaibi to toepoke goalwards.

Vicario barely has time to see it yet still produces an instinctive block with his feet to keep Spurs' lead in tact.

The ball is still alive though, and soon lands on Kristensen's head and nearly spins in at the far post despite the fact that the right-back was trying to put to back into the danger area.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

One final push needed now, Spurs fans.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

I'm not sure whether they're claiming for a foul or handball, but both seem optimistic given that the Argentine barely made contact with the striker and then was struck by the ball on the top of the shoulder.

The video officials do give it a cursory review, but it's quickly over - much to the fury of Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmoller.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

This time it's Bentancur, whose effort soars over the crossbar at the near post.

It was a tougher chance than Romero's, and nowhere near as close, but the Uruguayan is still furious with himself for not converting.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

Udogie and Tel work it down the left, and then the former nearly picks out the arriving Johnson at the far post.

Only a desperate last-ditch interception takes it off the Welsh forward's foot and away for another Spurs corner.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

On the counter, Johnson and Kulusevski almost work an opening that the Swede eventually crashes into a nearby defender for a corner.

From Tom Barclay at Deutsche Bank Park

Spurs have played this perfectly so far.

But they know one false move could set them right back so they must keep up their concentration.

They almost nicked a second just now Cristian Romero rose to meet Pedro Porro’s corner, but he flicked it just wide.

Ange Postecoglou took his coat off at half-time and is now patrolling his dugout in just his jumper now the rain has relented.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

The Argentine gets his head on an outswinging Kulusevski corner from the right with a crowd of Frankfurt players descending on him, and nods it agonisingly wide of the far post.

That surely would have seen Tottenham into the semis.

E. Frankfurt 0-1 Spurs (Agg: 1-2)

But it has to be said, the young midfielder has done really well to read the game, and has shown a real maturity in dropping in to help his defence.

'I couldn’t care less' - Ange Postecoglou has no idea where his future lies ahead of do-or-die Tottenham clash - The Sun
Description

ANGE POSTECOGLOU is in the dark over his future as he prepares for his do-or-die clash in Germany.

The Tottenham boss will be in danger of the sack if his team lose their Europa League quarter-final second leg at Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night - where they are without injured captain Son Heung-min.

That is because it would extinguish any chance of salvaging what has been a miserable campaign in the league where Spurs are out of both cups and down to 15th in the league.

There have been some suggestions his job would be under threat even if he went all the way in Europe this term given how badly the Prem form has been.

Asked if he knew what his future holds whatever happens this term, the Aussie replied: “Do I know? No, I’ve got no idea.

“We’ve got a game tomorrow night… but it’s not something I need to think about.

“I’ve never thought about those kind of things in terms of what’s important.

“What’s important is we have a game tomorrow night that’s a massive opportunity for this group of players, for us as a team, for this football club to get closer to achieving what everyone wants to achieve.

“Anything else other than that, and particularly in terms of me, I don’t have much thought process that thinks about life or my career or what I’m doing in that way.”

Postecoglou has lost 17 games in the league this season and went out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage as well as the FA Cup in round four.

It heaps the pressure on Thursday night's trip to a hostile Deutsche Bank Stadium, where the scores are tied 1-1 after last week’s first leg in North London.

But the ex-Celtic boss, 59, insisted he was not being weighed down by the occasion.

He said: “No, not at all, mate, because I don’t define my career and me as a person by what people think about me. I never have. Never will.

“You either think I’m capable of doing the job now or you don’t. That’s where I sit with these things.

“If people think that us winning tomorrow all of a sudden makes me a better manager than what I am today or us losing tomorrow somehow makes me a worse manager, I guess that’s their burden, not mine.

“I don’t think that way and I don’t think most people think that way. Or I’d like to think they don’t, in terms of their own sort of self esteem and who they are as people.

“I couldn’t care less. Really. I couldn’t care less.

“There’s no burden on me, there’s no anxiety on me. What I’m sitting here doing is thinking we’ve got a great opportunity to get to the final four of a major tournament.

“Mate, I’m not going to let that slip by without fighting tooth and nail for it irrespective of what may come the day after.”

Skipper Son, 32, did not travel due to a foot injury which kept him out of Sunday’s 4-2 loss at Wolves - though Kevin Danso is available following five weeks out with a hamstring issue.

The South Korean’s absence is just the latest in a string of crock problems that have dogged the Spurs squad all season long.

Postecoglou added: “It’s a blow but it’s consistent with everything else that’s happened this year, so it’s just another challenge for us to overcome.”

Huge Tottenham blow as captain Son Heung-min DOESN'T travel to Frankfurt for make-or-break Europa League clash

Huge Tottenham blow as captain Son Heung-min DOESN'T travel to Frankfurt for make-or-break Europa League clash - The Sun
Description

SON HEUNG-MIN has NOT travelled to Germany for Tottenham's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Boss Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that his skipper was the only senior Spurs player not to travel for the crunch clash.

Son, 32, played 80 minutes as Tottenham drew 1-1 with Eintracht in last week's first leg in North London.

The South Korean subsequently missed his side's 4-2 Premier League defeat at Wolves on Sunday.

Upon arriving in Germany, Postecoglou said of his captain: "Sonny didn't travel and he's the only one who hasn't travelled.

"He's been struggling with his foot for a couple of weeks now and has been in pain."

Son has scored seven goals and laid on 10 assists in the Premier League this term.

The Tottenham stalwart has added three further goals in the Europa League and has made 43 appearances in all competitions during another busy season.

Loanee Mathys Tel started in Son's place on the left wing at Molineux, scoring in the defeat.

Also absent at Molineux was Tel's French compatriot Wilson Odobert, although the former Burnley winger has travelled to Germany.

Tottenham were also boosted on Sunday by welcome returns for fit-again Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison.

Kulusevski, 24, had been out since Spurs' 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on February 26.

Richarlison, meanwhile, hadn't played since the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat at Liverpool in January - but was able to mark his return with a goal at Wolves.

Also available again to Postecoglou is centre-back Kevin Danso.

The January signing had been out for around six weeks with a hamstring injury.

Micky van de Ven was left on the bench at Wolves, with Ben Davies partnering an out-of-sorts Cristian Romero.

The Dutchman is likely to come back in to partner stand-in captain Romero in Germany.

Speaking ahead of the game, Van de Ven said: "We all still have trust in the gaffer and believe in the way he wants to play. We want to win this game for him but we also want to win for us."

The 23-year-old, who has played just 11 times in the Premier League this season, then added: "Why I don't play every week is a question for the gaffer not for me.

"I want to play every game. Football is what you love the most."

Aside from Son, long-term absentee Radu Dragusin is the only other player to miss out on tomorrow's match.

'I am gone anyway' - Postecoglou opens up on uncertain Tottenham future - The Sun
Description

ANGE POSTECOGLOU believes there is a “general sentiment” in football that he will be sacked by Spurs even if he wins the Europa League.

The under-pressure Aussie appears in last-chance saloon territory as Spurs host Eintracht Frankfurt in their quarter-final first leg tomorrow.

Be dumped out by the Germans and it could be curtains after an awful league campaign - or at least that is Postecoglou thinks the world expects to happen.

But he insists proving his critics wrong is not a motivating factor and that he is hell-bent on turning things around, starting by seeing off a team third in the Bundesliga.

Postecoglou said: “I think (it was written this week) that even if we win it, I’m gone anyway.

“The only reason I mention it is because I think that is the general sentiment.

“I have said before, that is not what drives me.

“I came to this club with a clear purpose and vision of what the club needed and what I could offer.

“That is to change the way the team plays, to obviously rejuvenate the squad because it was a squad that was coming towards the end of a cycle and to bring success.

“As long as I’m in this position, that’s always my focus irrespective of whatever noise there is or what may or may not be in the future.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK

“I don’t see that, that should diminish my burning ambition, my desire and my determination to make that happen. Anything you achieve in life usually comes with a struggle.

“Certainly everything I have achieved in my life has come with a struggle from a professional perspective.

“This is just another struggle, but never through this struggle have I lost the will to fight for what I think is the right thing to do and I’ll continue to do that.”

Spurs have slumped to 16 defeats in the Premier League this term.

They went out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage and early on in the FA Cup, meaning the only way to save their season is in the Europa League.

It also remains their last chance to qualify for Europe - and possibly to save Postecoglou’s job.

Fulham boss Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are understood to have admirers at Spurs if a change is made.

While German reports identified Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner - who guided Frankfurt to the Europa League title in 2022 - as a possible target.

Postecoglou has had a fractious relationship with Spurs supporters of late.

But he hopes the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be rocking tomorrow night to help his team through - like the fans of arch-rivals Arsenal did against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

He added: “(That is) hugely important.

“With every European game, whether you were watching last night (at Arsenal) or tonight, whoever is playing at home the atmosphere makes a big impact, absolutely it does.

“We hope it is the same tomorrow night for us. We think if we can get the crowd going tomorrow night, and we have had nights like that this year, European nights have been good, the semi-final of the Carabao Cup first leg against Liverpool was really good.

Premier League LIVE SCORES: Action on NOW as Fulham LEAD Liverpool, Brentford v Chelsea latest, Saints... - The Sun

Fulham 3-1 Liverpool

There attempts to win the ball just seem token gestures.

If they can get a goal in the next ten minutes we could have a game on our hands.

Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

In the five minutes he has been on, he has done more than Nkunku in the entire match.

Chelsea are looking to get forward more now.

View from SunSport's Tom Barclay in North London

The Saints are marching down to the Championship.

Half-time here and they are 2-0 already, an interminably-long VAR check away from 3-0, and looking like they have no way back.

They will be the fastest team ever to be relegated in Premier League history.

Ange Postecoglou meanwhile has provided some entertainment on the touchline by flicking an imaginary coin during the five-minute VAR check that ruled out Lucas Bergvall’s goal at 1-0.

It was as if to say, if VAR rules this out or not, it is down to pot luck.

View from SunSport's Tom Barclay in North London

IT has been a subdued atmosphere here at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There was the potential for toxicity given the protest against the owners and the week - and season, really - Ange Postecoglou has had.

But Brennan Johnson’s tenth Premier League goal of the campaign means there is no reason to be up in arms, right now at least.

If anything, it’s the Saints fans who making the most noise, every so often piping up with self-deprecating chants of “Championship again, ole ole”.

Their side will be the fastest ever to be relegated if they do not win today, with seven games left to play.

It would already be all over were it not for two top saves from ex-Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale, the latest one with his face.

Fulham 2-1 Liverpool

Take your pick who was at fault for this one.

Static defending, no hunger to be first to the ball and it deflects in off Robertson and seems to go through Kelleher like he is ghost.

‘We want Levy out’, chant Tottenham fans as thousands swarm streets in latest furious protest against club... - The Sun
Description

TOTTENHAM fans have protested against chairman Daniel Levy ahead of their clash with Southampton.

Spurs have underperformed on the pitch this season and fell to their 16th defeat of the league campaign at Chelsea on Thursday.

Fans made their feelings clear towards the players and manager Ange Postecoglou at Stamford Bridge.

And now Levy is the focus of supporters' ire once again, with thousands taking to the streets outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in protest.

Many held banners demanding Levy leave the club, with calls for change ringing out.

Fans chanted "We want Levy out!" and "Daniel Levy, get out of our club!"

Fans also vented their anger on X. One wrote: "Enough is enough, the state of this club is absolutely embarrassing.

"A complete reset is needed, and the first thing to change is the ownership and the ones that are taking the football decisions."

Another wrote: "So proud of all involved. Our club needs change."

A fellow Spurs fan wrote: "The dial has been turned up a notch."

It is the latest in a series of protests against Levy and his running of the club.

He is often targeted with accusations that he is more concerned with the commercial success of the club than glory on the pitch.

But he has dismissed such complaints, instead emphasising the importance of sustainability.

He said: “Since opening our new stadium in April 2019, we have invested over £700million net in player acquisitions.

“Recruitment remains a key focus, and we must ensure that we make smart purchases within our financial means.

“I often read calls for us to spend more, given that we are ranked as the ninth richest club in the world.

“However, a closer examination of today’s financial figures reveals that such spending must be sustainable in the long term and within our operating revenues.”

Spurs can't fall into the Ten Hag trap with Ange even if he somehow wins the Europa - he looks lonely, isolated and DONE

Spurs can't fall into the Ten Hag trap with Ange - he looks lonely and done - The Sun
Description

Here's how SunSport's Lloyd Canfield rated the Maresca's players.

SANCHEZ - 7

Much has been made of the goalkeeping situation at Chelsea this season, with both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen failing to live up to the standards the home supporters expect.

It was the former selected today, and while far from the greatness of Petr Cech, in fairness to him he put in a good display.

Question marks came up once more when his blushes were spared by VAR, having been beaten from range by Pape Matar Sarr, but he made up for that with a crucial (even if dramatic) save at the death to stop Spurs levelling the scoring.

GUSTO - 6

Malo Gusto's inclusion in the starting XI would've taken a few fans by surprise, especially given the electric impact Reece James had on international duty for England.

That said, he actually started the game very brightly with a huge block in his own box and a shot that had the fans next in ecstasy, only to realise the ball had hit the side netting and not gone in.

Despite doing enough at the back, he disappointed somewhat with his passing, and the Blues look more comfortable with Marc Cucurella inverting into midfield.

CHALOBAH - 8

With Wesley Fofana returning to the medical table, where he has admittedly spent most of his time this season, the January re-call of Trevoh Chalobah was needed once more.

He's been a very capable deputy for Big Wes, with a strong physical element to his game as well as a good passing range and ability.

It was his long ball over the top that created havoc in the first 50 seconds of the match, leading to Van de Ven hitting his own post.

COLWILL - 8

A rock personified.

Levi was utterly dominant at the back tonight, with a performance that showed just why he is so highly rated by Chelsea fans.

Coming up against fellow Cobham academy product Dominic Solanke would've been no easy task, but he marshalled him brilliantly and was strong in the air and on the ground.

CUCURELLA - 9

With Chelsea's Player of The Season voting being announced this week, Marc Cucurella has been a name on the lips of many this week after what has been his best career campaign.

He was influential once more, this time more in the defensive phases, whereas it's been his forward play that has earned him so many plaudits this season so far.

Crucial tackles, winning the ball back high up the pitch, and an eye for a pass too, it was another good display from the Spaniard despite not stealing the headlines.

CAICEDO - 9

Enzo Maresca had a look of horror on his face when his star midfielder went down in some real discomfort with his hamstring after a challenge on Djed Spence early on.

And rightly so, as his importance to Chelsea this season cannot be underestimated, with the Ecuadorian sensational once again.

Many would've taken the easy way out after picking up a knock, but not Moises, he battled until the very end, hobbling occasionally but stepping into challenges full of heart when his team needed him most.

Had his wonderful half-volley into the bottom corner not been ruled out by VAR, he would've had a perfect 10.

FERNANDEZ - 9

Enzo Fernandez does not shy away from a big occasion, and boy did he step up when it mattered for Chelsea tonight.

He perhaps should've opened the scoring in the first half when Cole Palmer squared the ball across the box, but he wasn't able to get that vital touch to divert it into the net.

The Argentine though, who shone for his national team against Brazil in the break, was on hand to make amends as he nodded a delightful Palmer delivery into the back of the net to make it 1-0 just after half-time.

His passion and love in this side is unmatched which makes him a fan favourite here - and the home fans will feel their £200m midfield was worth every penny tonight.

NETO - 6

The return of Nicolas Jackson saw Neto back in his favoured position on the right wing tonight, rather than playing as a striker.

Neither of Chelsea's wingers were massively impactful, but the Portuguese star was probably the better of the two on the night, shown by him being switched to the left when Noni Madueke returned.

Generally it was more of what we've seen from Neto so far this campaign, a lot of hard work and some flashes of good technical ability - but not the kind of end product Chelsea need at the moment.

PALMER - 8

His performance in the away leg of this fixture was the epitome of Cole Palmer at his ice-cold best, if you think back to his panenka penalty and Man of the Match display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But things have changed since then for Cole, with his poor form undeniable since the turn of the year.

After battling through injury and illness, many saw this as a chance for Palmer to burst back into life and get his season back on track, which is exactly what he did.

A supple second half cross landed on the head of Enzo Fernandez who finished with aplomb, giving him his first direct goal contribution in NINE games.

He was a difference maker tonight, and can hopefully kick on for the rest of the season.

SANCHO - 4

Groans rung around Stamford Bridge when Jadon Sancho was on the ball for much of the first half, with fans frustrated at his lack of desire to just hammer a shot at goal like he did in the away leg to score.

It just so happened that one of the Blues' best chances of the first half fell to his right boot, and when he finally did have a go it was superbly denied by Vicario in the Spurs net.

Jadon was replaced by the returning Noni Madueke midway into the second half to loud applause.

He is going to to offer more in terms of chance creation and goal threat to convince the Blues to keep him come the summer window.

JACKSON - 6

Nicolas Jackson being back was a huge boost for Chelsea in this game, and cause for excitement for the home support, particularly given his excellent record in London derbies.

A physical presence in the box is something the Blues have missed so much while playing Christopher Nkunku or Pedro Neto up front in his absence.

That strength and desire almost paid dividends after just 50 seconds as Van de Ven struck the ball off of his shin and onto the post.

Unfortunately that was about it for Nico today, he couldn't get his comeback goal.

SUBS

Noni Madueke (Jadon Sancho, 67) - 6

Chelsea fans were pleased to see Noni back from injury at last, and he will no doubt be a welcomed boost to the squad as we close in on the end of the season.

He may have been more impactful had he been selected from the off by Maresca, with the winger needing to do a lot of defensive work as Chelsea looked to keep their 1-0 lead.

His desire and work rate was much appreciated by the crowd.

Reece James (Nicolas Jackson, 82) - 6

A leader in this side, Reece was bought on at the right time to help his side see out the game.

He didn't have much opportunity at all to venture forward, but did everything asked of him.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Enzo Fernandez, 90+1) - 5

Had 10 minutes to see the game out and help his side defend the lead, with his energy helping put some pressure on Spurs to move quickly.

Tosin Adarabioyo (Cole Palmer, 90+1) - 5

The 'Uncle' of the squad was bought on at the death to help marshal his team to victory, which he did.

Provides composure and strength at the back for the Blues, and has been a valuable asset to his side this campaign.

‘It’s pretty good for Tottenham!’ – Ange Postecoglou sends clear message to Daniel Levy amid sack fears... - The Sun
Description

ANGE POSTECOGLOU has told Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to stop firing managers so often.

The Aussie is in danger of becoming the THIRTEENTH permanent boss to be axed by Levy.

But with Spurs on course for their worst finish in 17 years, Postecoglou said: “At some point, the club needs to stick to something.

"I’ve almost lasted two years, it’s pretty good for Tottenham.

“If I say it now it sounds self-serving, and defeats the purpose. But if you want to change the course of your events, you need to change materially a lot of things in terms of your outlook as a club.”

Postecoglou’s comments echo those of predecessor Antonio Conte, who attacked the club’s "mentality" and claimed consistently firing managers will not change anything.

And asked why so often trophy-winning bosses come to Spurs and fail to replicate that success, Postecoglou replied: “I just don’t think it’s about the managers.

“My perspective, while I’m in this chair, is to find a way to navigate where others have struggled.”

Spurs, who have not won a trophy since 2008, are 14th in the Prem.

And fuming fans chanted, "You don’t know what you’re doing" at the manager during Thursday’s defeat at Chelsea.

The Aussie responded by cupping his ear at the away end when sub Pape Matar Sarr levelled — only for it to be ruled out.

While his tone was far calmer, Postecoglou’s words were reminiscent of the fiery rant Conte produced in his final press conference as Tottenham boss in March 2023.

Postecoglou added: “There’s never any sort of defending of the club or the club defending itself.

“I hear plenty of people defending other clubs but with Tottenham wherever there’s a sore there’s a real pile-on to stick a finger in and then we accept our fate. The only voice you hear is me.”

Tottenham keeper Vicario appears to SHUSH fuming Spurs fans then smacks tunnel after Chelsea defeat... - The Sun
Description

TOTTENHAM goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario appeared to shush the travelling supporters after Spurs lost at Chelsea.

A second half goal from Enzo Fernandez sank the visitors, who succumbed to their 16th league defeat of the season.

Few supporters stayed behind after the final whistle but those who did made their feelings clear.

Some clapped while others questioned how and why their side keeps letting them down.

Vicario walked over to the away end and made a gesture, spinning his wrists around his head before appearing to make a shushing action.

The keeper then departed to head to the dressing room and as he left the pitch he punched part of the tunnel.

Postecoglou was also accused of cupping his ear towards the away end after Pape Sarr found the net - only for his goal to be ruled out.

But the Tottenham boss denied he was trying to goad supporters, claiming instead he wanted to hear their cheers as they have had little to celebrate this season.

Fans had reacted angrily to Sarr being brought on for Lucas Bergvall, and chanted: "You don't know what you're doing."

Postecoglou also added to fans' frustration by directing his players over to the away end at full-time while remaining on the halfway line himself.

LIke his manager Vicario, 28, has also been involved in exchanges with Spurs supporters this season.

Following the 1-0 defeat to AZ in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 tie, the Italian made a gesture to the travelling fans encouraging them to show more support.

That did not go down well with some and Vicario reacted angrily before leaving the pitch.

He said of that incident: “I can assume the disappointment [was] for the night because we didn’t play our football.

“So I can understand the frustration of the fans.

“But we still have a lot to play for, especially in the second leg. It’s just a way of trying to stay together because we have the opportunity to go through to the next round.”
