Sol Campbell slams Tottenham for 'whipping up storm' after controversial Arsenal transfer

'No one has apologised' - Sol Campbell slams Tottenham for 'whipping up storm' after controversial Arsenal transfer - The Sun
Description

SOL CAMPBELL laughs loudly when SunSport asks him about his favourite memories of the North London derby.

The former England defender — who controversially played for both Arsenal and Tottenham — pauses, then names a famous goal scored by Thierry Henry in 2002.

The Gunners’ French forward took the ball from his own half and dribbled through the Spurs team before scoring inside the area in front of the Highbury North Bank.

His goal was so good, and so iconic, the club turned Henry’s celebration into a statue at the Emirates Stadium.

Yet Campbell’s personal memories of this massive fixture — certainly since crossing the divide in 2001 — are not so rosy.

They feature a huge amount of abuse, with an effigy hung outside White Hart Lane and missiles chucked at the Arsenal team bus.

Even on Sunday at the Emirates, both sets of fans will be singing about the former England defender.

But from those in white shirts, it will not be complimentary.

Yet Campbell, who had been at Spurs all his career before making a free transfer to Highbury aged 26, reveals he has stayed away from the derby since he last played in it — a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane in October 2005.

Equally, Campbell has yet to step foot in Tottenham’s new stadium — even for an event away from football such as NFL or a concert.

Campbell, now 51 — who won 71 England caps — said: “I’ve not been to that fixture since my last derby game, when I played back there [at Tottenham].

“Jermain Defoe told me when all my photos got taken down and things like that.

“When he came and joined me at Portsmouth [from Spurs], he said, ‘There’s a few pictures going back up with you in it’, in obscure areas of the club.

“I’m not too sure about the new stadium as I haven’t been there. No music concerts. No. Nothing.”

After joining Arsenal, Campbell played in eight North London derbies — winning three, drawing four and losing one.

His sole loss came in his brief second stint with the Gunners in 2010.

The centre-back, who had a 20-year Premier League career, feels more should have been done to stop the abuse.

The unprecedented level of hatred towards him was particularly evident at his first game back at White Hart Lane in 2001.

Talking about the abuse he suffered — and in a message clearly directed at the likes of former Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy — Campbell said: “I think some people have got away and are kind of hiding.

“A lot of people, when they look back, they would probably say to themselves, ‘What was I doing back then? I can’t believe I was acting like that’.

“I get the fans were being whipped up. But it’s the people who had so much — the powerful people who did nothing and just allowed it to linger, allowed it to carry on.

“And now they don’t want to own up, don’t want to say sorry, don’t want to say that should not have happened.

“People on TV, politicians as well, putting their five pence worth in . . .

“Everybody got involved. Everybody was allowed to get away with it.

“No one wants to remember how they acted and how they treated me with disdain and the way they carried on — and there was no protection.

“People with power just turned their backs, just put their heads in the sand and thought it would just go away or just, you know . . . time will forget. And no one has apologised.

“It’s really sad because obviously my family got affected and things like that.

“For me — and Luis Figo when he went between Barcelona and Real Madrid — there’s no way on that level someone could be treated again on a football field or in and around football clubs. It’s impossible.”

While some Spurs fans will have violins out, Campbell is right.

Both clubs now would have made attempts to try to cool the situation down.

The counter-argument is that the player at his peak should not have joined Tottenham’s neighbours and bitter rivals.

Yet back to that favourite moment of Campbell’s — the wonderful Henry goal in a 3-0 home win.

Speaking on behalf of Paddy Power, he said: “It was an amazing run, about three-quarters of the pitch. I think that is probably one of the best games I’ve seen.

“In a derby, an individual player just takes the whole game by the scruff of the neck and produces an incredible moment after an incredible run.

“That one definitely sticks out in the mind. Just being there, just seeing this guy, just like poetry really.”

As for this latest North London derby, Campbell believes Arsenal should not approach it as a ‘must not lose’ contest.

He added: “I think the second you start saying ‘don’t lose it’, that’s when you can end up losing it. The players must not get swept up in things. They just have to do a job.”

Harry Redknapp: Arsenal will never get better chance to win Premier League title… but they can’t slip up against Spurs

Harry Redknapp: Arsenal will never get better chance to win Premier League title.. but they can't slip up against Spurs - The Sun
Description

THIS is the best opportunity Arsenal are ever going to have to win the title.

That’s what makes this North London derby against Tottenham so important — for both sides.

There’s no doubt Arsenal are in a very, very strong position this year. They have got a great squad and are genuine, red-hot favourites to win it.

I know they’re without Gabriel, who’s been such a big player for them at both ends of the pitch.

This time last year, you’d have been worried for them without him.

But not now, when they have the likes of Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera or even Ben White to come in alongside William Saliba. That’s the strength of their squad.

Last year, if key players were out you’d think ‘well that’s it’.

But then this year they’ve lost players and had enough cover to plug the holes.

The squad is so powerful and they’re the team to beat for sure.

You don’t have to be a genius to work that one out. And if they blew it this year, you would wonder, wouldn’t you, if they’d lose belief?

BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS

And it’s obvious that Arsenal are favourites for this game, too.

I didn’t realise until the other day that I’m the only Spurs manager to win there in the Premier League over 30 years.

That seems incredible and I remember it well. We were two-down and got back into it in the second half before Younes Kaboul scored the winner.

But there were a few games like that.

In my first week at Tottenham we went to the Emirates and were 4-2 down with two minutes to go but got a 4-4 draw and then another season we were two up early on and were smashed 5-2.

Tottenham’s home form has been the problem this season.

Thomas Frank has had to be without James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski all campaign, two players that can make a difference, can play a pass.

So that creative spark that they bring to the team is missing. They can’t win at home but they’ve picked up some good results away, when they can play on the counter a bit more.

But Thomas has to make sure his players understand what this game means to the fans.

It’s not like back in the day when players were from the area and knew what it was all about because they’d grown up as a fan. Now there’s only a handful of English players on both sides, let alone Londoners.

You probably have to relate it to games where maybe they’ve come from, say it’s like Boca Juniors versus River Plate or Real Madrid against Atletico.

As the manager I would spell it out. Tell them: ‘Listen, this is our big game of the year, this is the one the crowd want to win more than anything, this is our cup final today’.

You want them to know it’s everything to the fans, so that we have to turn in a performance.

It’s ‘We can’t let them down, their pride is at stake. They’ll go to work on Monday with bragging rights if we win’ and try to spell out the importance of the fixture.

But with Tottenham, you’ve got to be careful that you keep cool heads.

That game when we were two-up we had Emmanuel Adebayor sent off after he’d scored.

If you’re Spurs, you don’t want Cristian Romero jumping into a two-footed tackle after five minutes and getting sent off.

It’s about cool heads. He’s played enough big games to know you’ve got to be up for it but you don’t want to be over-cooking it either.

So the message can’t be ‘here we go, we’re going to steam in’.

It’s more ‘we need to compete today, it’s a massive game for us, let’s make sure we turn in a performance and get a positive result’.

But it’s equally big for both clubs. Arsenal can’t afford to slip up.

They have got a lead but they dropped a couple of points at Sunderland.

They are going great but they cannot afford to slip up. They’re at home, they’ve got to keep picking up wins, three points every time.

For Tottenham, they want to be having a top-four finish this year, so they’ve got to keep winning.

And obviously, just the game itself, it is so important to beat Arsenal.

Fed to the Wolves

ROB EDWARDS’ decision to leave Middlesbrough and take over at Wolves was a bold move — but a massive gamble.

I like what I see of Rob. He comes over as a classy, nice guy. It could be a career-changer for him, one way or the other.

If it works out and he keeps Wolves up, he becomes a hero. But if it doesn’t work out, he’s done himself no favours.

One team could pass the other team at the end of the season.

It looks likely that Wolves will go down and Boro come up.

It’s also because the man he’s left behind, Steve Gibson, is the best chairman in football.

The money he’s put into that club is incredible, the support he’s given them, he’s a local guy. He’s been amazing for Middlesbrough, really. He’s put fortunes in there.

So I hope it works out for Rob, I like what I see of him but he’s got a massive job on his hands.

At the start of the season, we all went ‘Sunderland and Burnley will go down, Leeds might stay up because of that fantastic atmosphere at Elland Road’.

But they could all stay up, especially Sunderland with the points they’ve got.

Darren Anderton says football under one Spurs boss was ‘awful’ and calls out current ace for not being ‘positive enough’

Darren Anderton says football under one Spurs boss was 'awful' and calls out current ace for not being 'positive enough' - The Sun
Description

DARREN ANDERTON does not find Thomas Frank’s football Gross to watch — and has urged supporters to give the Dane time.

New boss Frank has copped some flak from supporters for his pragmatic style after a series of disappointing home performances.

But he has also masterminded the best away form in the division as Tottenham prepare to head into enemy territory with tomorrow’s trip to Arsenal.

Anderton, who featured in plenty of North London derbies, played under a long-ball merchant in Christian Gross — but sees no comparison to Frank.

Swiss boss Gross lasted less than a year at Spurs, after just ten wins in 30 games.

The former England star, 53, told SunSport: “In my time, we had Christian Gross, who was so long ball and stats and everything else.

“It was awful. It definitely wasn’t going to work and it wasn’t the Tottenham way.

“With Thomas Frank, we’re not playing bad football. We’re just finding it very difficult to break down teams at home.

“That’s frustrating for players and fans.

“They’re missing certain players, like James Maddison, a player that can unlock defences.

SUN VEGAS WELCOME OFFER: GET £50 BONUS WHEN YOU JOIN

“Mauricio Pochettino had Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele.

“No disrespect to the players that we have now, but they’re not as gifted.

“They don’t have that guile to break teams down like those boys used to.

“The way we’re playing, I’m pretty happy with that as we’re winning without playing well.

“It takes time. I would definitely urge the fans to be patient.”

Former winger Anderton is a big fan of Spurs’ £55million summer signing Mohammed Kudus but wants more out of fellow wide man Brennan Johnson.

Daz added: “I like Brennan. I’m just trying to figure out why he’s not just destroying teams with the pace and the quality that he’s got.

“He’s happy just to get in the box and nick a goal, but in general, I just don’t think he’s positive enough for his attributes in terms of his pace and getting to the byline.

“I think he’s just got to go out and play that way.

“Kudus is a great player. He’s strong, brave, does a bit of everything. He’s the sort of player you want on your team.

“You know he won’t let you down. You know he’s not going to have that disaster of a performance that maybe Johnson will.”

Djed Spence and Micky van de Ven were criticised after appearing to blank Frank after the 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea early this month.

They apologised to their boss the following day.

But Anderton weighed in: “I didn’t like that at all. We’re all frustrated after losing a game.

“But you’ve got to deal with that in a different manner. You haven’t performed well.

“You don’t start mugging off the manager. If you’ve got something to say to him, you say it to him in the changing room when you’re having a conversation.”

Frank’s Spurs tenure would have lift-off if he can deliver a win against the Prem leaders.

Anderton added: “I don’t think there’s any reason why the Spurs boys should go there not thinking that they can go and win.

“There’s enough quality, enough results away from home this season to give them a belief that they can do that.

“The games we used to play, even when they were with Arsene Wenger and we were playing with a Christian Gross, you always thought you had a chance in the derby.

“It was such a good game to play in. It was such a leveller.”

Former Spurs star reveals the simple way Tottenham can beat Arsenal with four players key

'We are not scared' - Former Spurs star reveals the simple way Tottenham can beat Arsenal with four players key - The Sun
Description

A FORMER Tottenham star has revealed the simple way his old club can claim bragging rights over Arsenal.

Spurs make the short trip to the Emirates for the first North London derby of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Frank‘s side have endured a mixed start to the campaign, while Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

A win for Spurs would put them just five points behind their old rivals and potentially see them climb into Champions League spots.

Sandro, 36, believes that his former side are more than capable of snatching three points from Arsenal.

The retired Brazilian midfielder spent four years at White Hart Lane between 2010 and 2014.

His tough tackling on the field and quirky personality off it made him a heroic figure among Tottenham fans.

He has claimed that the way to beat Mikel Arteta‘s side is to “fight” back against the league leaders.

Sandro has backed the likes of Joao Pahlinha, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Djed Spence who are more than capable of standing their ground.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun via the home ofonline casino, he said: “It’s to fight.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

“To fight is the only way – we have to go there and fight. Because against Arsenal, if we slip even just a bit, we are done.

“We have to fight and we have the players to do that and give it their all.

“We have players that can fight. Pahlinha in the middle, van de Ven, Romero, Spence, they love to fight. We are not scared of Arsenal.”

Sandro has also insisted that Spurs are getting better under Frank and wants the Dane to be given time to build.

The cult figure played 106 times for the Lilywhites in all competitions and was managed by the likes of Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood and Mauricio Pochettino.

He played in seven North London derbies against Arsenal and only finished on the winning side once.

That was the famous clash back in 2011 when Kyle Walker fired in a long-range strike to hand Spurs a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane.

He thinks that the gap between the two North London clubs is not as big as it may appear.

He added: “I think we are improving. I think we are improving and Arsenal is already there at that level.

“I think the work that Arteta is doing, we have to give time for Thomas Frank to do. This is so new for Tottenham.

“The players are the same, but we are improving.

“We won a trophy, okay we didn’t play well. But now, can we keep the players, and can we improve the level of the football?

“I think Arsenal are one step ahead of us is all, but the gap is not massive. It’s getting smaller.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham preview

The 198th north London derby takes place on Sunday, with both sides looking to hit the ground running following the final international break of the year.

It’s a big clash for Premier League leaders Arsenal that kick-starts a monumental week for Mikel Arteta’s side, who face Spurs, Bayern Munich and Chelsea – all in the space of seven days.

The Gunners have been sensational across the board so far, leading the Premier League by four points, boasting a 100% record in the Champions League and safely through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Their success has been built on a rock-solid defence, which registered a club-record eight consecutive clean sheets across all competitions and has conceded just five goals in 11 top-flight games.

But there’s a sense that this week will be their biggest hurdle to date – and a true test of their credentials for silverware.

That task has been made all the more difficult by recent injuries to Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber.

Nevertheless, this is a fixture Arsenal have enjoyed in recent times.

The Gunners have won five of their last six Premier League games against Tottenham (D1), including the last three in a row. They have also lost just one of their last 32 Premier League home games against Spurs (W19 D12).

So the omens appear good despite their injury crisis, but Tottenham’s away form suggests they will fancy their chances of a result on Sunday.

Spurs are the only side still unbeaten away from home in the Premier League this season (W4 D1).

In fact, Thomas Frank’s side have the joint-most points (13), the joint-most goals (12) and the fewest goals conceded (3) on the road this term.

But it’s new territory for the visitors, as this will be the first Premier League north London derby without either Harry Kane or Son Heung-min.

They’ll hope that new territory can spark a turnaround in fortunes, having lost seven of their last nine Premier League games against Arsenal.

Goals?

Unlikely. I might end up with egg on my face, but I really don’t see many goals being scored when these sides clash on Sunday – so I’m backing under 2.5 goals at 21/20 with William Hill.

Some would argue that Gabriel’s injury will destabilise Arsenal; I’d suggest it will prompt Mikel Arteta to place even greater emphasis on protecting his back four.

And they should be capable of doing just that.

Arsenal have conceded only once in eight home games in all competitions this season, while Tottenham are over-reliant on set pieces, have failed to score in three of their last six, and have posted the lowest xG from open play of any Premier League side across the last four games (1.37).

Involved

It’s not the juiciest price I’ve ever put up, but we’re backing Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka to score or assist at 4/6 with William Hill.

The 24-year-old is in outstanding form, with four goals in his last six appearances for club and country. He also has a habit of turning it on against Spurs: three goals and three assists in 10 North London derbies, including five goal involvements in his last three meetings with Tottenham.

Arsenal vs Tottenham best betting tips

Our Bet Builder selections: Arsenal Win, Bukayo Saka to score, Mohammed Kudus and Riccardo Calafiori carded at 16/1 with Betfred HERE

Here’s why we’ve made those tips and selections..

Arsenal Win: We’re backing Arsenal to return to winning ways despite the absence of the influential Gabriel. The Gunners have won the last three derbies and come into this game without losing in any competition since August 31, while Spurs have won just one of their last four – and that came against FC Copenhagen.

Bukayo Saka to score: The 24-year-old is in terrific form, having scored four in his last six for club and country. It’s also no secret that he enjoys a clash with Spurs – he’s scored three and assisted three in 10 meetings, with five goal involvements in the last three games against Tottenham.

Mohammed Kudus carded: A bit of a value option here, but there’s a good chance Tottenham winger Mohammed Kudus finds his way into the referee’s notebook. The Ghana star, 25, has racked up four cautions in 15 appearances this season, while nobody in the Spurs squad has committed more fouls (16).

Riccardo Calafiori carded: The Arsenal defender should be fit, having missed both Italy games during the international break. But returning from a knock to face our other selection, Mohammed Kudus, isn’t an easy assignment – especially in a game of such magnitude. Calafiori has committed 17 fouls in the league this season and collected three yellows – three more than the rest of the squad.

How Arsenal’s ‘Bomb Squad’ strategy centred around Declan Rice can heap misery on Tottenham in North London derby

Arsenal's 'Bomb Squad' strategy can heap misery on Spurs in North London derby - The Sun
Description

ARSENAL head into the North London Derby as favourites and their ‘bomb squad’ could prove Tottenham’s undoing.

Both teams have notable injury absentees with Gabriel missing for the Gunners and Viktor Gyokeres a doubt.

But Mikel Arteta has plenty of depth to choose from and he could employ a tactic that Spurs will not be able to deal with.

SunSport’s tactical guru Dean Scoggins has identified a weakness with Tottenham’s defensive habits, and suggests Arsenal‘s ‘bomb squad’ could take advantage in the latest episode of Tactics Exposed.

Tottenham defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are at risk of being pulled out of position by the No9, allowing the likes of Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze to crash into the penalty box.

Bomb squad

One of the things I’ve noticed with the Tottenham defence is they like to chase runners.

Romero and Van de Ven have a tendency to run after players, so what Arsenal will be looking to do is drag defenders into places.

Gyokeres or Mikel Merino could come into feet for the ball and drag Romero in, opening up space for Rice to crash into to get into the box.

The key is how they move the Spurs full-backs away from the defensive line so that they can get their box entries from out wide.

Arsenal are top of the league not just for points, but for penalty area entries with 388.

So the job for the No9 is to drag centre-backs to allow wide players to crash into the box.

They need to manipulate the fact that Romero and Van de Ven like to chase runners.

Spurs response

Thomas Frank could look to negate Arsenal’s strengths by making his two midfielders, Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentacur, drop deep to support the centre-backs.

Romero and Van de Ven could try to pin the No9 in the middle of the pitch, with their midfield team-mates plugging gaps in the right and left side of central defence.

That could give them six at the back, which Frank may accept as long as Spurs still have an effective counter-attack option.

Arsenal handed HUGE boost for North London Derby with Odegaard set to return against Tottenham after Gabriel despair

Arsenal handed boost as Odegaard set to return vs Spurs after Gabriel despair - The Sun
Description

MARTIN ODEGAARD is set to return for Arsenal in the North London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.

The club skipper has missed seven matches with a knee injury sustained in the 2-0 win over West Ham on October 4.

But midfielder Odegaard has returned to full training and is ready to be part of the squad as Arsenal look to maintain their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Striker Viktor Gyokeres, who suffered a hamstring injury against Burnley three weeks ago, is still a doubt for the Tottenham match.

And the Gunners were dealt a hammer blow with key defender Gabriel Magalhaes ruled out for up at least a month earlier this week.

But manager Mikel Arteta could remain cautious with Odegaard and leave him on the bench for Tottenham.

Odegaard was keen to play for Norway in the last international break with his nation clinching qualifying for the World Cup.

The 26-year-old was not included in the squad but still travelled and trained in Oslo.

And Odegaard was still part of the celebrations after they secured their first World Cup appearance for 28 years.

He was on the pitch after they clinched top spot with a 4-1 win over Estonia last Thursday.

The team then hammered Italy 4-1 in Milan and then partied in Oslo in front of 50,000 fans on Monday after accepting congratulation from the Prime Minister.

On social media, Odegaard wrote: “We’ve been dreaming of moments like this since we were little kids.

“We have been working so hard. We have failed and failed… But we never gave up. Never lose faith, hope or unity.

“This group has stood together through the toughest days and moments, and therefore it feels even better to be where we are today.

“Proud to be a part of this crew. Proud to play for Norway. Proud to be Norwegian. Proud to represent Norway in the World Cup!

“Dreams can really come true if you work hard and believe enough.

“To all the children and young adults out there: We were all once like you. So dream big and work hard, and everything is possible!

“Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us yesterday and thank you for all the love we have received the past few days!

“It means more than you know. Let’s enjoy the moment, but we won’t stop here…”

Odegaard missed a similar portion of last season with an ankle injury and sat out of the draw with Manchester City in September due to a shoulder problem suffered early on against Nottingham Forest.

The news of his captain’s possible availability will come as welcome news for boss Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal gaffer will definitely be without Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke and Gabriel against the bitter rivals.

Jesus is training again while Havertz and Madueke are understood to be close to returning to the grass.

Arteta is also sweating on the fitness of Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Martinelli and Gyokeres.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have their own injury woes.

James Maddison is out for the season following ACL surgery.

Then the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Pape Sarr, Dominic Solanke, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma, Archie Gray, Kota Takai, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, Cristian Romero and Kolo Muani are all either coming back from problems or at risk of missing out.
