DARREN ANDERTON does not find Thomas Frank’s football Gross to watch — and has urged supporters to give the Dane time.

New boss Frank has copped some flak from supporters for his pragmatic style after a series of disappointing home performances.

But he has also masterminded the best away form in the division as Tottenham prepare to head into enemy territory with tomorrow’s trip to Arsenal.

Anderton, who featured in plenty of North London derbies, played under a long-ball merchant in Christian Gross — but sees no comparison to Frank.

Swiss boss Gross lasted less than a year at Spurs, after just ten wins in 30 games.

The former England star, 53, told SunSport: “In my time, we had Christian Gross, who was so long ball and stats and everything else.

“It was awful. It definitely wasn’t going to work and it wasn’t the Tottenham way.

“With Thomas Frank, we’re not playing bad football. We’re just finding it very difficult to break down teams at home.

“That’s frustrating for players and fans.

“They’re missing certain players, like James Maddison, a player that can unlock defences.

“Mauricio Pochettino had Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele.

“No disrespect to the players that we have now, but they’re not as gifted.

“They don’t have that guile to break teams down like those boys used to.

“The way we’re playing, I’m pretty happy with that as we’re winning without playing well.

“It takes time. I would definitely urge the fans to be patient.”

Former winger Anderton is a big fan of Spurs’ £55million summer signing Mohammed Kudus but wants more out of fellow wide man Brennan Johnson.

Daz added: “I like Brennan. I’m just trying to figure out why he’s not just destroying teams with the pace and the quality that he’s got.

“He’s happy just to get in the box and nick a goal, but in general, I just don’t think he’s positive enough for his attributes in terms of his pace and getting to the byline.

“I think he’s just got to go out and play that way.

“Kudus is a great player. He’s strong, brave, does a bit of everything. He’s the sort of player you want on your team.

“You know he won’t let you down. You know he’s not going to have that disaster of a performance that maybe Johnson will.”

Djed Spence and Micky van de Ven were criticised after appearing to blank Frank after the 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea early this month.

They apologised to their boss the following day.

But Anderton weighed in: “I didn’t like that at all. We’re all frustrated after losing a game.

“But you’ve got to deal with that in a different manner. You haven’t performed well.

“You don’t start mugging off the manager. If you’ve got something to say to him, you say it to him in the changing room when you’re having a conversation.”

Frank’s Spurs tenure would have lift-off if he can deliver a win against the Prem leaders.

Anderton added: “I don’t think there’s any reason why the Spurs boys should go there not thinking that they can go and win.

“There’s enough quality, enough results away from home this season to give them a belief that they can do that.

“The games we used to play, even when they were with Arsene Wenger and we were playing with a Christian Gross, you always thought you had a chance in the derby.

“It was such a good game to play in. It was such a leveller.”

A FORMER Tottenham star has revealed the simple way his old club can claim bragging rights over Arsenal.

Spurs make the short trip to the Emirates for the first North London derby of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Frank‘s side have endured a mixed start to the campaign, while Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

A win for Spurs would put them just five points behind their old rivals and potentially see them climb into Champions League spots.

Sandro, 36, believes that his former side are more than capable of snatching three points from Arsenal.

The retired Brazilian midfielder spent four years at White Hart Lane between 2010 and 2014.

His tough tackling on the field and quirky personality off it made him a heroic figure among Tottenham fans.

He has claimed that the way to beat Mikel Arteta‘s side is to “fight” back against the league leaders.

Sandro has backed the likes of Joao Pahlinha, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Djed Spence who are more than capable of standing their ground.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun via the home ofonline casino, he said: “It’s to fight.

“To fight is the only way – we have to go there and fight. Because against Arsenal, if we slip even just a bit, we are done.

“We have to fight and we have the players to do that and give it their all.

“We have players that can fight. Pahlinha in the middle, van de Ven, Romero, Spence, they love to fight. We are not scared of Arsenal.”

Sandro has also insisted that Spurs are getting better under Frank and wants the Dane to be given time to build.

The cult figure played 106 times for the Lilywhites in all competitions and was managed by the likes of Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood and Mauricio Pochettino.

He played in seven North London derbies against Arsenal and only finished on the winning side once.

That was the famous clash back in 2011 when Kyle Walker fired in a long-range strike to hand Spurs a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane.

He thinks that the gap between the two North London clubs is not as big as it may appear.

He added: “I think we are improving. I think we are improving and Arsenal is already there at that level.

“I think the work that Arteta is doing, we have to give time for Thomas Frank to do. This is so new for Tottenham.

“The players are the same, but we are improving.

“We won a trophy, okay we didn’t play well. But now, can we keep the players, and can we improve the level of the football?

“I think Arsenal are one step ahead of us is all, but the gap is not massive. It’s getting smaller.”

The 198th north London derby takes place on Sunday, with both sides looking to hit the ground running following the final international break of the year.

It’s a big clash for Premier League leaders Arsenal that kick-starts a monumental week for Mikel Arteta’s side, who face Spurs, Bayern Munich and Chelsea – all in the space of seven days.

The Gunners have been sensational across the board so far, leading the Premier League by four points, boasting a 100% record in the Champions League and safely through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Their success has been built on a rock-solid defence, which registered a club-record eight consecutive clean sheets across all competitions and has conceded just five goals in 11 top-flight games.

But there’s a sense that this week will be their biggest hurdle to date – and a true test of their credentials for silverware.

That task has been made all the more difficult by recent injuries to Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber.

Nevertheless, this is a fixture Arsenal have enjoyed in recent times.

The Gunners have won five of their last six Premier League games against Tottenham (D1), including the last three in a row. They have also lost just one of their last 32 Premier League home games against Spurs (W19 D12).

So the omens appear good despite their injury crisis, but Tottenham’s away form suggests they will fancy their chances of a result on Sunday.

Spurs are the only side still unbeaten away from home in the Premier League this season (W4 D1).

In fact, Thomas Frank’s side have the joint-most points (13), the joint-most goals (12) and the fewest goals conceded (3) on the road this term.

But it’s new territory for the visitors, as this will be the first Premier League north London derby without either Harry Kane or Son Heung-min.

They’ll hope that new territory can spark a turnaround in fortunes, having lost seven of their last nine Premier League games against Arsenal.

Unlikely. I might end up with egg on my face, but I really don’t see many goals being scored when these sides clash on Sunday – so I’m backing under 2.5 goals at 21/20 with William Hill.

Some would argue that Gabriel’s injury will destabilise Arsenal; I’d suggest it will prompt Mikel Arteta to place even greater emphasis on protecting his back four.

And they should be capable of doing just that.

Arsenal have conceded only once in eight home games in all competitions this season, while Tottenham are over-reliant on set pieces, have failed to score in three of their last six, and have posted the lowest xG from open play of any Premier League side across the last four games (1.37).

ARSENAL head into the North London Derby as favourites and their ‘bomb squad’ could prove Tottenham’s undoing.

Both teams have notable injury absentees with Gabriel missing for the Gunners and Viktor Gyokeres a doubt.

But Mikel Arteta has plenty of depth to choose from and he could employ a tactic that Spurs will not be able to deal with.

SunSport’s tactical guru Dean Scoggins has identified a weakness with Tottenham’s defensive habits, and suggests Arsenal‘s ‘bomb squad’ could take advantage in the latest episode of Tactics Exposed.

Tottenham defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are at risk of being pulled out of position by the No9, allowing the likes of Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze to crash into the penalty box.

Bomb squad

One of the things I’ve noticed with the Tottenham defence is they like to chase runners.

Romero and Van de Ven have a tendency to run after players, so what Arsenal will be looking to do is drag defenders into places.

Gyokeres or Mikel Merino could come into feet for the ball and drag Romero in, opening up space for Rice to crash into to get into the box.

The key is how they move the Spurs full-backs away from the defensive line so that they can get their box entries from out wide.

Arsenal are top of the league not just for points, but for penalty area entries with 388.

So the job for the No9 is to drag centre-backs to allow wide players to crash into the box.

They need to manipulate the fact that Romero and Van de Ven like to chase runners.

Spurs response

Thomas Frank could look to negate Arsenal’s strengths by making his two midfielders, Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentacur, drop deep to support the centre-backs.

Romero and Van de Ven could try to pin the No9 in the middle of the pitch, with their midfield team-mates plugging gaps in the right and left side of central defence.

That could give them six at the back, which Frank may accept as long as Spurs still have an effective counter-attack option.

MARTIN ODEGAARD is set to return for Arsenal in the North London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.

The club skipper has missed seven matches with a knee injury sustained in the 2-0 win over West Ham on October 4.

But midfielder Odegaard has returned to full training and is ready to be part of the squad as Arsenal look to maintain their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Striker Viktor Gyokeres, who suffered a hamstring injury against Burnley three weeks ago, is still a doubt for the Tottenham match.

And the Gunners were dealt a hammer blow with key defender Gabriel Magalhaes ruled out for up at least a month earlier this week.

But manager Mikel Arteta could remain cautious with Odegaard and leave him on the bench for Tottenham.

Odegaard was keen to play for Norway in the last international break with his nation clinching qualifying for the World Cup.

The 26-year-old was not included in the squad but still travelled and trained in Oslo.

And Odegaard was still part of the celebrations after they secured their first World Cup appearance for 28 years.

He was on the pitch after they clinched top spot with a 4-1 win over Estonia last Thursday.

The team then hammered Italy 4-1 in Milan and then partied in Oslo in front of 50,000 fans on Monday after accepting congratulation from the Prime Minister.

On social media, Odegaard wrote: “We’ve been dreaming of moments like this since we were little kids.

Odegaard missed a similar portion of last season with an ankle injury and sat out of the draw with Manchester City in September due to a shoulder problem suffered early on against Nottingham Forest.

The news of his captain’s possible availability will come as welcome news for boss Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal gaffer will definitely be without Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke and Gabriel against the bitter rivals.

Jesus is training again while Havertz and Madueke are understood to be close to returning to the grass.

Arteta is also sweating on the fitness of Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Martinelli and Gyokeres.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have their own injury woes.

James Maddison is out for the season following ACL surgery.

Then the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Pape Sarr, Dominic Solanke, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma, Archie Gray, Kota Takai, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, Cristian Romero and Kolo Muani are all either coming back from problems or at risk of missing out.

TOTTENHAM are being chased for royalties after adopting a Barry Manilow song before home games.

The Premier League club regularly blast out the crooner’s version of Can’t Smile Without You.

Now one of the hit tune’s three-man writing team — a fan of North London rivals Arsenal — has threatened a legal battle and blasted Spurs for refusing to cough up.

The song has become a fan favourite, with home supporters joining in before games at the £1billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs even used a Can’t Smile Without You banner to cover empty seats when matches were played without fans during the pandemic.

Geoff Morrow, who helped write it in 1975, branded the club “ridiculous” after turning down his request for payments.

He told The Sun: “I hoped that Spurs would be willing to sit down and meet with me to discuss this but they haven’t been interested.

“When we wrote the song, we never imagined it would become a football anthem.

“It was written as a love song.
