Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to make at least two further signings in what could prove a hectic end to the summer window, sources have told ESPN.

Spurs are keen on bringing in an attacking midfielder after missing out on both Morgan Gibbs-White who eventually signed a new deal at Nottingham Forest, and Eberechi Eze who chose instead to join north London rivals Arsenal last week in a £67.5 million ($90.74m) move.

Sources say that among those players under consideration are Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche and West Ham's Lucas Paquetá while the club has long held an interest in Xavi Simons at RB Leipzig and could move for the player if there are signs his move to Chelsea is unlikely to go through.

Sources added that an enquiry has also been lodged with Marseille for Adrien Rabiot, who is available after a remarkable dressing room altercation with team-mate Jonathan Rowe last week following their 1-0 defeat to Rennes.

Elsewhere, talks are still described by sources as "active" regarding a move for Manchester City winger Savinho but it is unclear whether there is any likelihood of an agreement with Como for Nico Paz. Real Madrid have a buy-back clause contained within Paz's contract at Como.

Spurs have also explored whether Bilal El Khannouss has finalised a deal to join Crystal Palace from Leicester City or if there is the possibility for the north London club to enter the running.

While a No. 10 and a winger are viewed as priorities, sources have told ESPN that Spurs are also open to bringing in a centre-back before Monday's deadline.

How did Arsenal beat Spurs to Eze, and why do they need him?

How did Arsenal beat Spurs to Eze, and why do they need him? - ESPN
Description

Just when it looked like Arsenal's big summer of transfer business was done, they moved late in the window to sign England and Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

The Gunners had already spent close to £200 million on players, such as striker Viktor Gyökeres and midfielder Martín Zubimendi, to take them one step further this season after reaching the UEFA Champions League semifinals and once again finishing second in the Premier League last term.

The transfer could end up costing Arsenal £67.5 million (an initial £60m with £7.5m in add-ons), but it was worth every penny just to snatch him from under the noses of local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who were so close to signing the 27-year-old themselves.

- Who needs Eze? Spurs' win at City shows transfers aren't everything

- 10 storylines to follow: Liverpool and City rebuilds, Barça's defence

- How will Premier League's new stars fare? Wirtz, Sesko, Gyökeres, more

Eze leaves Selhurst Park as a Palace legend, having scored the goal that sealed their first major trophy in their history with a 1-0 win in the FA Cup final last season, and then opened this campaign by helping them beat Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield. Now he returns to the club that released him at the age of 13, where he will be challenging for top honors.

But how did Arsenal manage to sign Eze inside 48 hours after both the player and Palace had settled on a deal to join Spurs? And, for all his quality, will he actually be a good fit for coach Mikel Arteta's team?

How did Eze end up at Arsenal after agreeing to join Spurs?

Sometimes you make all the running only to end up standing still. Tottenham felt they had done all the hard yards in reaching an agreement with both Crystal Palace and Eze, only to now reflect on yet another disappointment in what has been a difficult summer so far for the club.

First thing's first: Eze had a £68m release clause that expired earlier this month. Neither Arsenal nor Spurs wanted to trigger it, but both expressed an interest. However, Arsenal's approach was influenced by two factors: Firstly, they feared 18-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri may not sign a new contract, and secondly, there is a need to balance the squad after committing around £200m to bring in six new players.

In the meantime, Spurs pressed ahead. Eze indicated he was willing to join them, and although they found reaching an agreement over a fee difficult -- Spurs failed with a bid of £50m plus £10m in add-ons not too long ago -- by Wednesday, they got there, agreeing to pay £60m plus £7.5m in add-ons. That figure, not by accident, is just fractionally under the player's expired release clause amount and a victory for Palace who had remained stubborn in their valuation.

However, Palace would not finalize a deal as they wanted Eze available for Thursday night's Conference League playoff first leg against Fredrikstad. Out of respect for the situation -- not least Eze's iconic status at Palace and the chance to play at home in Europe in his final game -- Spurs agreed to hold off. But circumstances began to conspire against them.

Arsenal had been mulling over whether to pursue Eze, but Nwaneri signing a new five-year deal and a struggle to generate funds through player exits had created a lag in their interest. Then Kai Havertz's injury gave them fresh impetus. It is unclear how long Havertz will be out -- Arteta is expected to address that on Friday, but there are suggestions that the Germany international could be out for several months -- and that would leave Arsenal short across the attacking positions, an issue they felt cost them dearly in last season's title race.

Creating greater squad depth has been a key aim of Arsenal's summer transfer strategy. Here was an opportunity to nip that concern in the bud by stretching themselves for a player they like and who Spurs had proved was available, albeit for a larger fee than they had wanted to pay.

And so, safe in the knowledge that Eze is a boyhood Arsenal fan, the Gunners moved, led by sporting director Andrea Berta and vice-chairman Tim Lewis. Arsenal were able to use Spurs' accepted offer as a benchmark with Palace and the deal advanced very quickly on Wednesday. Once the player stated his preference for Arsenal, Tottenham pulled out and a new entry into north London rivalry folklore was created. -- James Olley

How Eze became one of the Premier League's most exciting stars

Crystal Palace signed Eze off the back of a 14-goal, eight-assist season with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship in 2019-20. While there wasn't necessarily a sense at the time that he'd go on to hit such heights, the move did spark real jealousy among some other Premier League fanbases, who'd clearly set their hearts on signing him.

It soon became clear why the Eagles had such an advantage over the others during negotiations: Eze is a South-East London boy and did not want to leave the capital, making Palace -- which had Wilfried Zaha and which would soon go on to sign Marc Guéhi, Michael Olise and Conor Gallagher (on loan) -- an ideal fit for such an up-and-coming playmaker.

Eze drew comparisons to Jack Grealish in the Championship due to his immense dribbling and ball-carrying ability. He made most defenders at that level look lost, jinking inside and outside, creating space for a shot so easily. After a foundational first year at Crystal Palace, where he found his feet at the top level, he pretty much exploded from there, registering 45 goal contributions over three seasons for a team that finished 11th, then 10th, then 12th.

That the Eagles so frequently finish in roughly that position is a running joke among the fanbase -- there's even a song about it, which goalkeeper Dean Henderson gave an updated rendition of after May's FA Cup win (to the tune of Shakira's "Waka Waka": "Twelfth again, who gives a f---?/We've won the FA Cup!"). What elevated Eze's time at the club was that trophy win.

He was astonishingly good during that run to victory, scoring in the quarterfinal and the semifinal, then netting the only goal in a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final. It felt like Eze came of age over the course of 2024-25. From playing a part in England's run to the Euro 2024 final, to consistently excelling for Palace throughout the season, to being decisive when the lights were at their brightest.

A decade after making his professional debut as a 16-year-old, Eze has developed into a fine all-round attacking midfielder. He ranked in the 90th percentile among Premier League footballers last season for successful take-ons and the 89th percentile for shot-creating actions. Gradient Sports gave him a tackling resistance grade of 81.2, the third best of anyone in his position.

Beyond the stats, what really jumps out when you watch him is how often Eze makes the right choice. When he shoots it's because there's a proper opening; when he passes, it's because a teammate is clearly in a better position; and if he opts to stop, turn and recycle the ball, it's because he knows his team either needs a breather or needs to maintain final-third pressure.

This is game awareness that can only develop over time -- but in many cases, it never develops at all. It's the under-the-surface trait that marks Eze out as special. -- Sam Tighe

Why did Arsenal need to sign Eze? How will Arteta fit him in?

At first glance, perhaps it's a little curious that the club's response to losing a central striker (Havertz) to injury is to add an attacking midfielder/winger. But dig a little deeper from a squad-building perspective and it starts to make more sense.

With out-and-out No. 9 striker Gyökeres recruited and Gabriel Jesus expected back from long-term injury before the end of 2025, Arteta and Berta would risk overcrowding the striker department if they were to add a fourth.

Instead, it seems as though they'll negotiate the opening stages of the season with Gyökeres front and center, then Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard as deputies. Both have stepped in to spearhead the attack at various points, and Merino did so reasonably well last season. Some may feel it's a risk to go with that trio, but signing another Arsenal-caliber striker is expensive work, and when they're all fit, what would Arteta do with four of them?

In the scenario where you're taking Merino and/or Trossard out of the midfield corps and placing them among the forwards, you're left with vacancies in midfield. Eze, then becomes very attractive, as he's not only excellent, but can play left wing, No. 10 and as an attacking box-to-box No. 8.

In Arteta's system, he'd likely feel most at home on the left, offering a viable, creative alternative to Bukayo Saka on the opposite flank. For a long time, Arsenal's creative play has almost solely come from their right side, as that's where Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Ben White play, so Eze stands to add some welcome balance to the unit. He will draw players towards him -- he has "gravity," as it's sometimes labeled -- which will free up space for the others.

Spurs' win at Man City shows transfers aren't everything

Who needs Eze? Spurs' win at Man City shows transfers aren't everything - ESPN
Description

MANCHESTER, England -- After a week in which they've missed out on signing Eberechi Eze to rivals Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur delivered a timely message with their 2-0 win at Manchester City that the success of a season doesn't just come down to what you can do in the transfer market.

Already in coach Thomas Frank's short time in charge, Spurs have come within minutes of beating European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup and started their Premier League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Burnley. But this week the tone has changed -- primarily because of Eze's decision to join Arsenal rather than their North London neighbors.

Radio phone-ins have been inundated with furious fans. The supporters who traveled to City for Saturday's early kickoff began their afternoon with chants of "We want Levy out" in a show of frustration -- it must be said, not only linked to the failed bid to sign Eze -- at chairman Daniel Levy.

Within 45 minutes, though, the mood had flipped again. Tottenham went in at halftime at the Etihad Stadium leading 2-0. A controlled, disciplined performance in the second half meant the match finished that way and, for a few hours at least, Spurs went top of the Premier League. Maybe they've already got their signing of the summer by hiring Frank. Eberechi who?

- Has Frank got Tottenham ready for a Premier League revival?

- How did Arsenal beat Spurs to Eze, and why do they need him?

- How will Premier League's new stars fare? Wirtz, Sesko, Gyökeres, more

"Extremely proud of the players' performance, an exceptionally good performance," Frank said postmatch. "I think it's fair to say we've had a few questions about the transfer market. 'Why not?' and 'What if?'

"We have a good group of players, a talented group of players, that I'm very pleased with. If we can improve it, perfect. If we can't, then we have very good players, and we showed that today."

Asked about Eze's snub at his prematch news conference on Friday, Frank said he "doesn't want any players that don't want to come to this club." He might find his transfer targets in the final days of the window are more willing to join after his team put in a clinical display against City.

For 35 minutes, they soaked up pressure and needed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to save well from Omar Marmoush. The final 10 minutes of the first half were all about the manager's game plan.

A long ball forward exposed City's high line and Richarlison raced through before squaring his pass for Brennan Johnson. Initially ruled out for offside, VAR Andrew Madley intervened and the goal stood. Then, high pressure on the edge of the penalty area forced goalkeeper James Trafford -- starting ahead of Éderson -- to make a poor pass, and João Palhinha gratefully accepted the gift to score a second.

You don't necessarily need new signings to play well and win games. Sometimes it's more important to have a manager who knows what he's doing. Frank, a winner at the Etihad before with Brentford in 2022, picked a team against City that included two summer arrivals -- Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus -- but, crucially, he's getting more out of the players he's inherited.

The way Spurs closed out the game by limiting City's chances looked a million miles away from former coach Ange Postecoglou's cavalier approach. Last season, Postecoglou's team managed just six clean sheets in the league. This season, it's two in two games for Spurs. Frank is trying to rebuild a team which, for all the euphoria of their UEFA Europa League triumph, finished 17th last season. There will be bumps in the road. For now though, it's so far, so good.

"Second half I think we were very good," said Frank. "The spell where they could put pressure on us, we were very aggressive in the pressure.

"The clean sheet makes me very happy. It is a big thing we have been working on. Blocking shots, everything. Last year we had six clean sheets."

City manager Pep Guardiola has now lost eight Premier League games to Tottenham, his most against any opponent. It wasn't lost on the traveling fans who spent the final minutes alternating between chants of "It's happened again" and "We are top of the league."

It's too early in the season to force Guardiola into a major rethink, but he has issues to solve. His defensive line -- always high -- has been pushed up even further since the arrival of Jürgen Klopp's former assistant at Liverpool, Pep Lijnders. Spurs took advantage of John Stones jumping out in an attempt to catch Richarlison offside in the build-up to the first goal.

Guardiola's other problem is in goal. Trafford was picked after a positive debut and a clean sheet last week against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but it was his mistake which cost City the second goal. With Ederson on the bench, the 22-year-old looked shaky, particularly when coming out of his area to deal with balls over the top. You imagine Gianluigi Donnarumma, unwanted by PSG, is waiting by the phone.

Afterward, Guardiola offered no guarantees about who will start when City travel to Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend. He does, however, want to see improvement at the Amex Stadium.

"James made a good first game [against Wolves] and I decided to continue," said Guardiola. "When I take decisions in the first part of the season, for all the players, you play one or two and everyone thinks 'OK, this is the starting lineup'. It was just today I decided that.

"It's just the second game. The last game against Wolves everyone said everything was fine, but I said it was just the first game and it's the same now. We have to improve. We have seven days rest and then Brighton."

TRENDING RUMORS

- With Spurs having already signed Mohammed Kudus for £50 million from one rival in West Ham United, TEAMtalk are suggesting that they are exploring a potential move for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku after missing out when Eberechi Eze chose Arsenal. The Blues are slightly reluctant to let the 27-year-old join a Premier League rival and there is also interest from RB Leipzig. But The Telegraph have also reported that Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche, Como's Nico Paz and Southampton's Tyler Dibling are being considered, and The Independent says Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers is an option.

- Arsenal have already spent over £250m this summer, with £67.5m the latest amount needed to bring in Eze, but the club are still chasing a winger and Lyon's Malick Fofana is on their radar following news ofKai Havertz's injury, according to L'Equipe. Lyon need to raise around €40m to help their financial situation and the Belgium international is only 20 years old, so has a lot of potential. Bayern Munich are also keen, while Everton have also seen a bid rejected earlier in the window.

- Manchester United view Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as a "dream" option, as reported by TEAMtalk. Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to strengthen in the middle of the pitch, as evidenced by the Red Devils' failed attempt to sign Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba. Despite Man United's long-held admiration for the 21-year-old Wharton, it will be especially difficult to bring him in with the Eagles losing Eze already. Wharton is also very much on the radar of Real Madrid, according to AS. Madrid's scouting department, led by Juni Calafat, have been on the Palace midfielder's trail for some time and see him as a long-term successor to the now-retired Toni Kroos. Madrid are reported to be readying an €80m offer, but will likely wait until next year to make their move.

- Aston Villa are pushing to sign Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson and have made contact with all parties involved, says Fabrizio Romano. Newcastle United are also still interested in the 24-year-old and Bayern Munich are monitoring his situation, though the Blues reportedly want upwards of a £60m fee. Napoli are also in the race, but Jackson could be too expensive for them and they are looking at Manchester United's Rasmus Højlund instead. Meanwhile, AC Milan have turned to Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface since they have been unable to meet Chelsea's demands.

-- Borussia Monchengladbach have matched Parma's proposal for Borussia Dortmund and USMNT attacking midfielder Giovanni Reyna, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The decision is now in the 22-year-old's hands and Gladbach are confident that they will win the race to sign him. This comes at a vital time for Reyna with the 2026 World Cup approaching, especially as he struggled for regular gametime last term.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN's Sam Tighe looks at why big clubs are considering a move for Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.

Nagging injury issues disrupted Wharton's last season, resulting in just 16 Premier League starts, but that's done nothing to diminish his burgeoning stock. There's a good reason he snuck into England's Euro 2024 squad at the 11th hour -- and there's a good reason he's being linked to the world's top clubs now.

It takes just a single game of watching him closely to appreciate his subtle brilliance on the ball. His decision-making from deep in midfield is superb and he plays quick, instinctive passes, barely wasting any time or taking any excess touches. In an era where lots of elite players like to get a good feel for the ball, Wharton stands out as the complete opposite. Less is more.

He was in the 93rd percentile among midfielders for progressive passes in the Premier League last year, while also averaging 3.7 combined tackles and interceptions per game. That's the sort of blend between possession and defensive skills a midfielder needs to be effective at the top level.

Tottenham confident of landing Palace's Eberechi Eze

Sources: Spurs leading Eze race as talks progress - ESPN
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly confident of completing a deal worth at least £60 million ($81m) for Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, sources have told ESPN.

ESPN reported last week that Spurs were considering entering the running for the 27-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current contract at Selhurst Park.

Eze had a £68m release clause in his contract which expired earlier this month and Tottenham are now hopeful of negotiating a deal for a slightly lower fee after stepping up their interest.

Arsenal have been tracking Eze for some time but their pursuit was largely contingent upon Ethan Nwaneri entering the final year of his contract without any fresh agreement. The teenager has since signed a new five-year deal.

Arteta's side are therefore reliant on outgoings before following up on Eze after spending around £200m this window and their decision to improve Leandro Trossard's contract terms -- without extending the length of his deal -- suggests they have cooled their interest.

Either way in the meantime, Spurs have moved ahead of their north London rivals and are now in pole position to sign him.

A source close to Spurs stressed no deal has been finalised but talks are progressing between the club with Tottenham submitted an offer worth an initial £55m with around £5m in add-ons.

Further discussions are taking place but sources say Eze has informed Palace he is willing to join Spurs, who will play in the Champions League this season after winning the Europa League in May.

- Glasner: 'Don't believe everything you read' on transfer rumours

- Cristian Romero: New Tottenham captain signs contract to 2029

- What early issues need solving for some top Premier League clubs?

Eze played 84 minutes of Saturday's 0-0 draw at Chelsea and had a brilliant free-kick goal ruled out by VAR in the first half.

Speaking after the game, Palace boss Oliver Glasner hinted that no move was imminent by insisting the England international could be involved in Thursday's Conference League play-off against Fredrikstad.

"He will come in tomorrow [Monday] to Crystal Palace's training ground, and have recovery," Glasner said. "We will ensure a Tuesday off and we will meet Wednesday, and I expect him being back and playing for us against Fredrikstad.

"I'm quite calm, but I also know, we have two weeks to go, and I know Ebs' clause is gone, so it's the club's decision, and we will see what happens."

Who had a better Premier League debut, Mohammed Kudus or Bryan Mbeumo?

Who had a better Premier League debut, Mohammed Kudus or Bryan Mbeumo? - ESPN
Description

The opening weekend of the Premier League season saw debuts aplenty up and down the division, with many fans getting the chance to get a first glimpse of their shiny new offseason arrivals.

Despite diverse fortunes, Tottenham Hotspur (beat Burnley) and Manchester United (lost to Arsenal) fans have plenty of reasons for optimism after the debut performances of Mohammed Kudus and Bryan Mbeumo respectively.

And these two fanbases certainly need some cheer following testing campaigns that left supporters of both clubs peering nervously forward towards the transfer window for a saviour or two, or at least reasons to believe in good times ahead.

Both stepped boldly into the market, with United spending the best part of €229 million on four new arrivals, despite their supposed well-documented financial concerns, and Spurs' head honcho Daniel Levy parting with €145 million to bolster the Londoners' ranks with six fresh faces.

In Kudus and Mbeumo, who was also linked with a move to Tottenham earlier in the window, Thomas Frank and Ruben Amorim opted for players who already had a track record of impact-making in the Premier League.

And, at 24 and 25, they have room to take their game to the next level in their new surroundings... the perfect recipe for a new terrace favourite.

Spurs' victory in the Europa League final -- against United -- couldn't distract from a 17th-placed finish in which they lost 22 matches, costing Ange Postecoglou his job. United were little better, with the mid-season replacement of Erik ten Hag with Amorim resulting in a 15th-place finish, but still their worst campaign during the Premier League era.

Kudos to Kudus

Following a bright showing in the UEFA Super Cup final defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in Udine in midweek, Kudus was scintillating as Tottenham dispatched Burnley 3-0 on Saturday, demonstrating exactly why the club opted to sign him from rivals West Ham United for €63.80 million.

Two-goal Richarlison dominated the headlines, but Kudus was the architect, sending in a fine cross for the Brazilian to finish in the tenth minute after forging space for himself beyond Josh Cullen.

On the hour mark, Kudus flexed his flair, pulling away from Quilindschy Hartman with a turn of pace and a drop of the shoulder before sending in an inviting cross which, while not perfectly positioned for Richarlison, still ended up in the back of the net after the Brazil No. 9's inspired scissor kick.

The outrageous strike may or may not win Goal of the Season when all is said and done, although there won't be too many goals this term that eclipse his pirouetting finish.

The Premier League's all-time top scorer Alan Shearer lauded Kudus's assist on Match of the Day, describing it as "great wing play, just as it was for the first goal," while the Ghana international's understanding with Richarlison and Spurs' other (fit) forward options already appears to be a key strength for the Lilywhites in this post-Son Heung-min era.

"I really get the boost and the encouragement [from fans], even though it's part of my DNA, my game, to get in [attacking] positions like this," Kudus told Spurs' media team after the game.

"Also [I have] the help of the team, because they need to get the ball in, with me higher up in those positions, but definitely the energy from the fans brought a boost even though that's what I love to do, take players on, try to create, and help the team to win."

Richarlison, who has already scored half of the entirety of his league goal tally from last season, was positively purring about Kudus's debut.

"Thank you for the assist," Richarlison said in his post-match interview. "I'm so happy with this guy, I think next week he needs to score, because he's working too hard for the team.

"I think this guy is a Brazilian!"

Against Burnley, Spurs fans saw the various elements of Kudus's game that make him such a watch-able, complete, and - potentially - lethal attacking talent, offering Spurs a versatile threat across the forward line.

Despite some questions about his attitude and consistency, Kudus is one of the finest dribblers in world football, with no one completing more successful dribbles than the Ghana international in the Prem over the last two campaigns.

He's a worker with and without the ball as well, and while he's coming off the back of a testing campaign with West Ham, has demonstrated previously -- both at Ajax and in England -- that all of his eye-catching football is underpinned by a killer instinct.

Operating largely as a false nine, he had a hand in six goals in six Champions League group stage games during the 22-23 season, before contributing 20 goals and assists combined in his first season with the Irons, including a Goal of the Season contender against SC Freiburg.

West Ham's vice-chair Karren Brady explained that the Hammers sought to cash in on the attacker because they hadn't been overly impressed with his performances last term, but they may now be worried about yet another talented prospect thriving in North London after moving from the capital's east.

However, it's a decision that looks to have upset Hammers fans -- witness the 'Judas' banner that accompanied the supporters for their opener against Sunderland -- and West Ham's loss now has the potential to invigorate this Tottenham team this term.

Mbeumo impresses despite defeat

Mbeumo, like Kudus, made his PL debut this weekend on the right side of a front three, even if Amorim's attacking configuration at United pulls the Cameroon international into a more central role than the Ghanaian was operating in against Burnley.

The Red Devils weren't able to turn over a new leaf with a victory, Riccardo Calafiori's first-half header proving the different between the hosts and title-hopefuls Arsenal, but at least Mbeumo can hold his head up high after a promising maiden showing with his new club.

It was a bit chaotic at times, but the forward did have United's best chance with a goal-bound header towards David Raya, forcing the Arsenal stopper into a decent save, having earlier troubled the Spaniard with a low effort.

Mbeumo brought the intelligent movement, intensity and aggression that highlighted his rise to prominence at Brentford, and while this United-work-in-progress lacked refinement -- and ultimately a goal -- there was evidence of a burgeoning connection between the attacker and fellow new boy Matheus Cunha.

There were ripples of electricity when the duo, offering a greater ferocity and composure than United grew used to last season, began to assert themselves, and the pair's combined nine shots during the match was as many as all of Arsenal's players combined.

It's tantalising to imagine what a Frank-Mbeumo link-up could have looked like at Tottenham, with the two renewing the partnership that led to 27 Prem goals (scored and assists) last season.

However, all parties can at least look optimistically forward to the coming campaign following this weekend's debuts, with Frank unlikely to be thinking of 'what ifs' after Kudus's two-assist showing, and Amorim seeing, in Mbeumo, an essential addition to realise his vision of what football at Old Trafford needs to look like during his tenure.

New Spurs captain Romero signs contract to 2029 - ESPN
Description

Cristian Romero has pledged his long-term future to Tottenham Hotspur by signing new contract with the Premier League club.

Sources have told ESPN the contract is set to run until the end of the 2028-29 season.

Confirmation of the 28-year-old's new deal comes after he was named as the club's new captain following Son Heung-Min's transfer to MLS' LAFC.

Romero, a World Cup and two-time Copa América-winning centre-back, had two year remaining on his previous contract and his future in north London was uncertain this summer.

Sources have told ESPN Atlético Madrid were confident they would be able to prise him away from north London at the start of the transfer window.

The Argentine's appointment as Frank's new captain the day before Spurs' narrow UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday -- in which Romero scored a second-half header -- served as the first hint that the player saw his long-term future at the club.

But the confirmation of his new deal comes as a big boost to new Spurs boss Thomas Frank who masterminded an impressive Premier League season-opening 3-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday.

Romero joined Spurs from Serie A side Atalanta in 2021 and his performances in the heart of defence were integral to Spurs' Europa League success under former head coach Ange Postecoglou.

He captained Spurs in Son's absence from the round of 16 onwards and was named player of the match in the 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.

Earlier on Monday, Spurs announced that Romero's defensive partner, Djed Spence, had also signed a new long-term contract with the club.

TRENDING RUMORS

- Manchester United are determined not to let Alejandro Garnacho join Chelsea for a lower transfer fee than they are after as they expect to receive an opening bid from Stamford Bridge, BBC Sport reports. United want a fee of no less than £50 million for the Argentina international, whose transfer would register as pure profit for the club due to him being a product of their academy. However, Sky Sports reports that at least two first-team forwards need to leave Chelsea this month before the proposed transfers of Garnacho and Xavi Simons can be completed by the Blues, who have rejected a loan offer from Bayern Munich for attacker Christopher Nkunku with both the player and his club favoring a permanent exit this summer.

- The chairmen of Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have been in direct contact over the potential transfer of Eberechi Eze, according to Fabrizio Romano. Spurs chief Daniel Levy has spoken to his counterpart at Selhurst Park, Steve Parish about a deal for the England international worth an initial £55 million plus up to £5 million in add-ons. Eze, 27, has two years remaining on his contract which originally contained a £68 million release clause, but Palace manager Oliver Glasner has now confirmed that has now expired.

- Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenhamare all keen on signing Brentford center back Nathan Collins, according to the Daily Mail. The Republic of Ireland international has been earmarked for a "key role" this season by new Bees boss Keith Andrews, following the exit of club captain Christian Nørgaard for Arsenal. As such, the club is "highly reluctant" to sanction the departure of Collins, whose contract runs until June 2029. Of the 24-year-old's admirers, Liverpool are particularly keen to bolster their defensive line before the transfer window slams shut. They have been heavily linked with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi.

- Chelsea have had an offer of €50 million for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni rejected, La Gazzetta Dello Sport reports. The Blues are still in the market for a center back this summer after Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury. They had hoped to bolster their options with the arrival of Italy international Bastoni, but the offer was "politely declined."

- Como are trying to convince Al Nassr defender Aymeric Laporte to join the club this summer according to Nicolò Schira. The Spain international, 31, had looked set for a return to former side Athletic Club after agreeing to personal terms, but he remains at Saudi team Al Nassr as the two sides could not agree on a transfer fee. That has opened the door for ambitious Serie A club Como to move for former Manchester City defender Laporte.
