Conor Gallagher is set to join Tottenham Hotspur from Atlético Madrid, sources close to the LaLiga club have told ESPN.

The former Chelsea midfielder is expected to join Spurs on a permanent deal, bringing an end to his 17-month spell in the Spanish capital.

Gallagher, 25, has been unable to cement a regular starting spot in the Atletico side, making just four starts in LaLiga this season.

The England international joined Atlético from Chelsea in August of 2024, ending a protracted transfer saga that summer.

In 2024-25, Atlético finished third in LaLiga, and were eliminated in the Copa del Rey semifinals and the Champions League round of 16.

Gallagher has faced increased competition for minutes this season after Atlético signed midfielders Johnny Cardoso, Álex Baena, Thiago Almada and Nico González last summer.

Spurs supporters hit out at club, Thomas Frank over 'fall in ambition'

Spurs supporters hit out at club, Thomas Frank over 'fall in ambition' - ESPN
Description

Tottenham's tumultuous week has taken another twist after the club and boss Thomas Frank were accused of showing a "dramatic fall in ambition" by fans.

Members of Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust met with senior club representatives on Friday to discuss concerns among fans.

It has been a nightmare week for Spurs, with the contentious sale of last season's leading scorer Brennan Johnson last Friday followed by fellow right winger Mohammed Kudus being injured two days later and ruled out until April.

Frank was again booed after Sunday's 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland, but worse occurred on Wednesday at Bournemouth.

Tottenham conceded in stoppage time to slip to a 3-2 loss and drop to 14th in the Premier League and Frank's misery was compounded when he inadvertently used a coffee cup with the badge of rivals Arsenal on it.

Hours later captain Cristian Romero took aim at unspecified senior figures at the club when he claimed "other people" should be speaking but "they only show up when things are going well."

The supporters' trust has now demanded action, saying in a statement: "The THST board has been engaged with the senior leadership of the football club throughout recent weeks and months and has repeatedly raised supporters' concerns with them.

"Whilst we acknowledge the changes in personnel behind the scenes at the club, this has regrettably not been matched with improvements on the pitch.

"There also appears to be a dramatic fall in ambition for the football club, as evidenced by the transfer window to date and repeated statements by Thomas Frank, reminding supporters that the club finished 17th in the Premier League last season, that the club is only participating in the Champions League through winning the Europa League, and that Bournemouth [a side without a win in 11 games] are 'always a difficult team' and that he is 'not enjoying the job.'

"Supporters have suffered the embarrassment of players directly confronting them for exercising their right to express themselves, of the club captain publicly calling out 'other people' at the club who do not speak except 'to tell a few lies', and of the manager being photographed drinking from an Arsenal cup apparently unaware that he was doing so.

"Whilst these incidents may have explanations that we could understand and even sympathise with, they demonstrate a lack of understanding and a lack of care about the perception of the football club."

The supporters' trust said fans needed to "hear directly from the club leadership the ambition for the football club for this season, for next season and for the foreseeable future" and stressed "all the stops need to be pulled out" in this month's transfer window to show Tottenham are "a serious football club."

Per ESPN sources, Spurs had an opening bid in the region of €13 million ($15.13m) rejected for Santos defender Souza but have returned with an improved offer.

PA has contacted Tottenham for comment on the supporters' trust statement.

Cristian Romero to stay Tottenham captain after Instagram outburst

Cristian Romero to stay Tottenham captain after Instagram outburst - ESPN
Description

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has confirmed Cristian Romero remains captain and has not been fined after his explosive social-media post.

Romero apologised to Spurs fans in an Instagram post after Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Bournemouth and appeared to take aim at key figures at the club when he said "at times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don't."

World Cup-winner Romero went on to state "they only show up when things are going well" and "we are responsible, there's no doubt about that. I am the first. But we will keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around."

Romero is no stranger to a controversial social media post and notably pointed out "the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist" when he paid tribute to sacked Ange Postecoglou on his Instagram page in June.

However, the 27-year-old will not face any further disciplinary measure for his comments which sparked debate over the target of Romero's frustration given Daniel Levy left his role in September and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham was only appointed in April.

Frank, who spoke with Romero on Thursday morning along with co-sporting director Johan Lange, said "He is our captain, he's not been fined.

"That's an internal thing, but we haven't done that.

"I think there's a lot of ways to deal with different situations. We've chose to have a good conversation with him, understand where he stands, handle it internally and that's everything I have to say."

Frank has repeated claimed the key figures at the club are aligned in recent media sessions, but was quizzed on if Romero shared that alignment given his social-media post.

He added: "That I can't and you probably need to ask him. It is not that often he does do the press, so you need to wait until you speak to him, but what I know he has been here for five years, that's one thing.

"And what I know is I look at where I have been here for seven months and I see a very aligned club, so it's just up to us to prove that."

Pushed on if Romero's remarks may put off potential signings in January, Frank disagreed.

"I'm pretty sure that clever players and agents can look through if there's a little bit of noise. I think it's very important to stress that even though there's noise, the club is very aligned," Frank pointed out.

"Johan, Vinai and I are very aligned. Ownership is very aligned. We know it's a tough spell that we need to get through."

Spurs begin their FA Cup campaign on Saturday at home to Aston Villa, but will be without up to nine players after Lucas Bergvall (groin) and Rodrigo Bentancur (hamstring) suffered problems at Bournemouth.

Frank also confirmed Mohammed Kudus is unlikely to feature until after the March international break and Dejan Kulusevski will not return before February.

"If anyone can come back quicker it's Deki [Kulusevski]. The most important thing is to remove the pain in the knee and he got an injection 10 days ago and we'll know in three to four weeks whether that has settled.

"And when it's settled, hopefully he'll be on the grass and from there we'll see what's happening."

Description

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has defended captain Cristian Romero after a social media post where he accused people at the club of telling "lies."

The post, in which he apologised to fans and has since been amended, came after Tottenham's 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on Wednesday.

"At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don't -- as has been happening for several years now," Romero said on Instagram.

"They only show up when things are going well."

The initial post had said: "They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies."

Ahead of Tottenham's FA Cup clash with Aston Villa on Saturday, Frank defended his captain but admitted the post was a "mistake."

"I think after [Romero] became the captain he's done a lot of good things right. I said it when I named him the captain that even though he's an experienced player, he's tried a lot, he's still a young leader," Frank said.

"I'm actually very happy with his performance last night, I think he was a true captain in many ways throughout the game.

"Speaking at half-time when we were 2-1 down, keep believing, keep doing the right things. But also when you're a young leader sometimes you make a mistake, of course it's good to keep it internally.

"[Sporting director] Johan [Lange] and I had a good conversation with him this morning about everything, which we of course keep internally.

Meanwhile, Frank said they are still waiting to learn the severity of several injuries in the squad including Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, who were injured against Bournemouth.

"Lucas is being assessed today. We'll know more later today with him. Same with Rodri. Rodri is a hamstring injury, looks like a bigger one. We don't know the extent yet," Frank said.

"Mohammed Kudus is a bigger one, to the tendon and quad, and don't expect him back until after the March international break.

"With Dejan Kulusevski, we know it's a complicated injury. If anyone can come back quicker it's Deki.

"The most important thing is to remove the pain in the knee and he got an injection 10 days ago and we'll know in 3-4 weeks whether that has settled and then he can get back on the grass."

Spurs' Thomas Frank: Didn't notice I was drinking out of Arsenal cup - ESPN
Description

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank has said he didn't notice he was drinking out of an Arsenal cup ahead of the clash at Bournemouth, adding that it would have been "absolutely stupid" for him to do so.

Frank was pictured drinking out of a coffee cup that had the logo of Spurs' arch-rivals Arsenal emblazoned on it ahead of their game on Wednesday.

The image was widely shared on social media, and when Frank was asked about it post-match he said: "It's fair to say that not winning every single football match, it would be absolutely stupid of me to take a cup with Arsenal on it. Anyone thinking I've done that or the staff has done it ...

"They've been in the changing room the game before us [on Saturday]. It's normal to say 'give me a cup of espresso' before every game.

"I think it's a little bit sad in football that I need to be asked a question like that. We are definitely going in the wrong direction if we are worrying about me having a cup of another club. Of course I wouldn't do that. That would be really stupid."

Arsenal were the last visitors at the Vitality Stadium, registering a 3-2 win on the weekend. Nevertheless, the image of Frank with an Arsenal cup was poor optics for a Spurs manager who is facing scrutiny for his side's performances.

Frank's side's 3-2 loss at Bournemouth courtesy of a late Antoine Semenyo strike means they've won just one of their last five Premier League games and languish in 14th in the table.

"I think it's fair to say everyone involved in Tottenham, it's a tough one to take today," said Frank. "Hopefully everyone can see how hard we worked to get everything in the right direction.

"Overall the performance was good, especially the second half, in a game where we deserved to get more.

"That is extremely painful to be part of, so of course people are frustrated -- that's natural.

"It's very tough to sit here right now and we haven't got anything out of overall a good performance."

Thomas Frank: Tottenham chiefs 'completely aligned' on club's future

Thomas Frank: Tottenham chiefs 'completely aligned' on club's future - ESPN
Description

Under-pressure Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has insisted the key figures at the club are "completely aligned" about the future and hailed the importance of "calm" chief executive Vinai Venkatesham.

Frank was already under scrutiny after a difficult start at Spurs, but the shock departures this month of Enzo Maresca and Ruben Amorim at Chelsea and Manchester United respectively will place a magnified lens on the work of the Danish coach.

Tottenham travel to Bournemouth on Wednesday unbeaten in three matches, but they have won just two of their last 11 in the Premier League and not scored from open play since Dec. 6, which has resulted in sections of a disgruntled fanbase losing faith in Frank.

However, the 52-year-old has stayed steadfast about his long-term prospects in N17 and detailed the key role of ex-Arsenal chief Venkatesham this week alongside co-sporting directors Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici.

Venkatesham joined Spurs in April after a lengthy and successful spell at Arsenal, where he was one of the most influential figures during the early troubling days of Mikel Arteta, who is currently the second-longest serving top-flight manager.

"I think the biggest thing, which we are, is that we are completely aligned, so the biggest thing is that let's say Johan, Fabio, Vinai and I are aligned. That's the biggest thing and then we also aligned with the ownership," Frank said.

"Vinai is one of the best communicators I ever met, as a CEO, leader or whatever, he is absolutely excellent in that. I think I'm OK, but he is way superior, which I think is crucial internally and externally.

"He's calm and he takes sensible decisions -- two rare abilities in football, but also two absolutely crucial abilities if you want to have success long term. For me, Vinai is crucial for Tottenham to have success in many ways.

"Then, of course, we have known each other for six months, so we are getting closer and closer and know each other better and better.

"Vinai is good and, besides being smart and taking sensible decisions, he also has got huge experience of 10 years at Arsenal, with how they built and experienced how they built it."

Asked if Venkatesham's decision to stick with Arteta during a rocky first 12 months had influenced his approach, Frank agreed: "Yeah, definitely, no doubt about that, plus he also knows what good looks like and also knows how unfortunately it can take time to get up to where good should look like.

"That's definitely beneficial because also he understands the journey we're on."

While Venkatesham and Frank appear aligned, Paratici has continuously been linked with a move back to Italy with Fiorentina during recent weeks, which made the recent decision to send Manor Solomon on loan to the Serie A club particularly eye-catching.

However, Frank pointed out of Paratici: "We're paying his wage, he's working very hard.

"The last time I spoke to him? I spoke to him in the morning before the [Sunderland] game."

Frank was candid about several topics in Monday's press conference, but declined to reveal if Dejan Kulusevski had suffered a setback in his recovery from a serious knee injury after a rough return of December had previously been set.

"It just takes time," he said. "They are working very hard and he is working very hard to come back on the pitch."
