Arne Slot press conference: Facing Tottenham, Liverpool's form, Ekitike, Jones and more - Liverpool FC
Description

The Dutchman spoke to reporters at the AXA Training Centre this morning, with the game against Thomas Frank's side on Saturday (5.30pm GMT).

See a summary of Slot's briefing below...

On Mohamed Salah...

I've said last week actions speak louder than words. We've moved on. He was in the squad [versus Brighton & Hove Albion] and he was the first substitution I made. Now he's at the AFCON playing big games for himself but also for the country, so I think it's fair to them – but definitely also for us because we are going to play some very important games – that all the focus for him is over there and there should not be any distraction from me saying anything about his time at Liverpool, because what I said: we've moved on after the Leeds interview and he played against Brighton. Now he is there, so it's fair for the country, for him and also for us to talk about Tottenham and other games and for them to be fully focused on their tournament.

On Liverpool's impressive goalscoring record against Tottenham in recent years...

But it took us 92 minutes to score away against Brentford, against a Thomas Frank team last season, so you cannot compare... Yes, you can compare certain things because [it is] mainly the same players. They've added a few players to the team and with Thomas Frank [there is] a new manager, so I don't think you can compare our games of last season with this season. Even more so because we not only added, we lost a lot of players as well, so you cannot compare this team of ours to last season – even with the same manager – and you cannot compare our results of last season [against Tottenham] with facing a Thomas Frank team.

Injury news: Frimpong, Gakpo, Gomez and Szoboszlai

On what potentially going into the top four with a win ' would do for the spirit and the feeling around' the club...

I think winning always gives a good feeling and good spirit for a team that had so many changes during the summer. The league table, the first 12, 13, 14, 15 teams are so close to each other that winning or losing matters a lot, with one exception although [Manchester] City are coming closer and closer to Arsenal now, but Arsenal are quite far away from us. I think the main thing for us is to build on what we are building on in the last five games. I think with the exception of Brighton maybe, because we did concede a lot of chances against them, but the other games we were solid defensively and that's a good base, combined with that the players are getting more and more ready to compete at Premier League intensity as a group. So, I think we can expect more from us in the upcoming part of the season than what we've shown before, but I assume that everybody would expect that [of themselves] as well.

On having a week in between matches...

I think it's always helpful for a manager to work on the training pitch with the players, especially if you bring in players – not all of them but a few of them – a little bit later in the window. With Alex [Isak], for example, he's the best example of that on the first of September. But you can also influence players if you play a game and you do video meetings. So, it's not an excuse for our results, not at all. But I would prefer to have more of these weeks than we have because it's a way of implementing either new things or pointing out more and more or stressing on things we have to do better than we did them before. I liked it and next week is the same, so that is almost a mini-pre-season for us.

On whether Hugo Ekitike has 'surpassed his expectations so far'...

He didn't, because we knew what type of player we signed. I think I said it after the game and this is something I just said as well: he had to go off in the Brighton game after 70 minutes because he had cramp, but he did almost double the amount of work he did three months ago where I also had to take him off with cramp. But his ability to score, his technique, his speed, all these things, that's just what he has, so no-one is surprised to see that. But he improved a lot in terms of how much he runs during a game and how hard he works. That's a big help for the team as well.

Because people are focused only on goals, but he helps us out now defensively as well and that is also very important for a No.9. In the talks I've had with him, I've probably spoken more about what I expect from him defensively than offensively. Before we signed him, he had no problems with that. After we signed him, he sometimes felt like, 'Can we also talk a bit about offence?' But there's not so much to talk about offence with him because that part of his game is very good. Defensively, I'm more and more excited to see what he's doing as well.

On Curtis Jones' form...

He's done really good in the last three games and I think that's not the first time. But maybe since I'm here it's the first time that it's three times in a row that he brings in very, very good performances. He's had in the past also very good performances and a game later I didn't like the performance as much as I did now recently in his last three games. So, I think it's again a challenge for him to go to the fourth, to go to the fifth, to go to the sixth game. But I think I'm not the only one who liked the way he played – with so much confidence, with so much work-rate, giving it all in every single moment for the team and really, really comfortable on the ball as well. His last three performances are the base where we expect him to go on, but that starts tomorrow against a challenging opponent like Spurs.

On whether he feels the team is getting 'closer to finding the balance between being good defensively and offensively'...

I think we are getting closer and closer to the team I want us to be, and that has gone with ups and downs, let's be completely clear about that. But for me that makes complete sense because of all the changes we made during the summer, and we made them on purpose because we thought we needed to. If I'm completely honest, maybe I didn't expect it to take as long as it did. But looking back on it, reflecting on it now, I think I've been too positive, because if you go with a new group where not all of them are completely ready to play every single game 90 minutes in this intensity, you have to adapt – sometimes he can play, then he cannot play. So, it takes maybe a bit of time.

And we've been a bit unlucky with referee decisions, I've said this multiple times. Even [on] Saturday when I said afterwards that the referee was completely neutral, I missed out on a red card, so another influential decision but this time it didn't hurt us. We have to go to that situation that if a referee's decision is against us, it doesn't matter, we are still good enough to win. If we concede a set-piece, no problem, we're still able to win. So, set-pieces are another thing, I think from almost all the losses that we've had except for one maybe, in all the other ones we've conceded a set-piece and that shouldn't influence our result anymore.

That's why we have to improve, that we're not dependent as much on luck or bad luck because we are in that mix too many times from the start of the season, because we were a few times lucky maybe in the start when we scored late-goal winners. We deserved those wins but still they were small margins and we have to make sure that this team gets to a level that either referee decisions or set-pieces don't influence our results as [much] as they've done in recent weeks and months.

Gareth Taylor column: Spurs frustration, Mia Enderby fitness and Brighton focus - Liverpool FC
Description

It was another frustrating day for us again at Tottenham because I felt we started well but we couldn't hold on to the lead and ultimately lost the game.

We scored a good goal from Beata Olsson and hopefully that will give her confidence. I wanted to give her a start because I liked the way she trained during the international break when most of the players were away, and I really felt she deserved that opportunity.

See the latest LFC Women ticketing information here

We scored one goal then could have scored one or two others and if they had gone in I really think that could have made the difference.

Both the goals we gave away were really cheap, and I never felt like there was too much between the teams, but we are being punished by our mistakes where we can be better for sure.

It was very frustrating not to get anything from the game, we are getting closer, but I still feel we have got a lot of work to do to improve our levels.

Everybody else is improving in the WSL and we are trying to get there but we've lost some big players from the team, not only from last season, but so far with the two ACL injuries we've picked up.

It really frustrated me that we couldn't have an attacking option on the bench at the weekend, particularly when we were chasing the goal at the end and that could have made a difference.

We have had good news about Mia Enderby and she is going to be OK. We have had all the checks back and she's resumed training. That's a quick recovery, which is good.

On Sunday we are back at home again when we welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to St Helens Stadium.

Our aim is to try to make our home a fortress, but our main priority at this moment in time is to get some points on the board before the Christmas break.

Yes, that's really tough if you look at the games we have coming up. There are no free hits in this league because the levels of all the teams have improved.

Brighton are a good team, there's no doubt about that. Of course, like us they have suffered a big blow recently with an ACL injury to Michelle Agyemang, but they are a dangerous team who I think are a match for anyone on their day.

Again, just to reiterate to our supporters that we are a work in progress. I am really clear about where we are at the moment and where I want us to get to.

I know that looks a long way away at the moment but we certainly need some help and the players need a bit of help with that too.

We are trying our hardest and we are working tremendously. Internally, players and staff are working to their maximum to try to get the necessary encouraging signs that we want.

I thought the support from our fans down at Tottenham was once again exceptional. They are outstanding, they are with us from the start of the game right through to the end of the game.

I know it's really tough at the moment but we are trying to give them what they want and I can assure you we are working really hard. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday at St Helens Stadium.

Thank you for your continued support.

Liverpool beaten against Tottenham Hotspur in WSL

Liverpool beaten against Tottenham Hotspur in WSL - Liverpool FC
Description

It was a competitive start between the two teams in the capital as the visitors enjoyed the early play.

The Reds in particular were enjoying some freedom down both flanks and it was a darting forward run from Grace Fisk on the left that helped open the scoring.

Liverpool’s captain delivered low into the area in minute 11 and, with Spurs failing to clear, the ball was touched to Beata Olsson, who fired home on the turn for her first goal for the club.

A little over a minute later, Olsson again threatened as she worked goalkeeper Lize Kop down to her right with a driven shot.

However, it was Tottenham who struck next to level up the contest in what was developing into an even encounter.

A short-corner routine proved Liverpool’s undoing with Olivia Holdt eventually lifting a ball across the six-yard box for Toko Koga to tap home.

Ahead of the half-time interval, Drew Spence twice went close, before forcing goalkeeper Faye Kirby into a strong save at her near post with a header.

In response, Olsson and Mia Enderby both worked Kop in the Spurs net, though neither team were able to add to the scoreline.

The game restarted after the interval in similar fashion to the first, with much of the play coming in midfield.

Tottenham, though, produced a clever move to edge in front in the 52nd minute via Bethany England.

A pass over the top down the left found the run of Amanda Nilden and her first-time low ball allowed the striker to cushion a shot into the net.

Liverpool attempted a response almost instantly through Enderby but she was only able to drag her shot wide of the post after good play from Cornelia Kapocs and Ceri Holland.

The hosts applied pressure on the Reds in the closing stages, forcing Fisk into two well-timed challenges to keep them at bay.

In their search for a leveller, substitute Sofie Lundgaard saw a prodded effort blocked from close range after a clever run and cross from Holland on the right.

However, following a lengthy delay in added time due to an injury to Enderby, Kapocs went closest in Liverpool’s quest for a point, though her effort flew over the bar from inside the area with Gareth Taylor’s side beaten.

Team

Liverpool: Kirby, Shimizu, Fisk, Evans, Woodham (Clark, 62), Nagano, Kerr (Lundgaard, 78), Kapocs, Holland (Maclean, 87), Olsson, Enderby (Silcock, 90+14).

Unused subs: Laws, Borggrafe, Szymczak.

Gareth Taylor match reaction: Tottenham defeat and Mia Enderby latest - Liverpool FC
Description

The Reds were beaten at Brisbane Road in Barclays Women’s Super League action despite going ahead via Beata Olsson's first goal for the club.

Strikes from Toko Koga and Bethany England sealed a comeback victory for Spurs as they secured the spoils in the capital.

Match report: LFC Women beaten at Tottenham Hotspur in WSL

Read LFC Women head coach Taylor's post-match reaction below…

On Mia Enderby's injury after she was stretchered off following a fall in added time...

It's not nice to see. Obviously [she was] stretchered off and I've not had an opportunity to speak to the medical department. I think she has gone to hospital but hopefully she is OK. At one point I thought she was going to re-enter in terms of getting back up and start to play again but with those types of injuries it's really crucial we take care of them.

On the result and performance...

I thought we started the game OK. We scored a good goal. I don't think either team were playing at their best. We certainly could've exploited a bit more when we had those moments particularly at 1-0. But then we give away a really bad goal from a set play when Lily [Woodham] is off the pitch at that time which is frustrating.

We just need to be tougher in those moments to see it out. It was just a little bit naive particularly from that set play and then you give a team like Tottenham, who have got good options to come from the sidelines as well, an opportunity to get a foothold in the game.

On trying to keep the confidence high in the group with recent results...

It's really tough. We all need support at the club because we've had a lot that's obviously happened both on and off the pitch. On the pitch we're not getting the necessary results that we want. Of course, we don't expect to be top of the league, we're realistic and we know we're at the start of a really, really long project. But, of course, you want to see some positive moments and I think we've seen glimpses. It's just we're not able to sustain it for long enough in a game of 90 minutes.

On Beata Olsson scoring her first goal for the club...

I was pleased. We had her in training during the international break, which was great, so we did a lot of good work with her and saw a lot of progressions. When the team came back together on Friday after the break I really liked her performances and her attitude. Her endeavour has been first class. Hopefully that gives her confidence today.

On a struggle for options in his squad with recent injuries...

We didn't have anything from the sidelines today unfortunately. It's not ideal when you have to play a 21-year-old Hannah Silcock up on the right side. We just have to battle through it. The message is clear. We're working so hard as staff, players and everyone at the club to turn this into a better situation. But it takes a bit of time and a bit of support. Unfortunately, as we've seen at the moment, we're getting knocked a bit - but we'll keep fighting.
