Arne Slot press conference: 'We're looking forward to Sunday - but we have a responsibility' - Liverpool FC
Description

The Reds can be confirmed as Premier League champions if they avoid defeat by Spurs, which would hand the club's supporters the first opportunity for an in-person title celebration in 35 years.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, Slot wants his team to treat the occasion like they have done in the previous 33 league matches that got them into this position.

Update: Liverpool's Premier League title permutations for Sunday

He said: "First of all, that's a big responsibility because we are aware of the fact that the last time this club won the league it was COVID time.

"So, everybody is looking forward to Sunday but we know there is still a job to be done, at least one point.

"That's what we know and hopefully our fans know as well when they come to the stadium, that they support us in the best possible way they can – which is what they have done the whole season – and are aware of the fact that we still need a point.

"That's something we are definitely aware of here inside this building. So, it's a nice game to look forward to but it's also a responsibility we have for Sunday.

"First there is a game to be played against a Tottenham side that is playing for something special as well, maybe not in the league but definitely in the Europa League. So, they want to go towards Bodo/Glimt in the best possible prepared way.

"We are only focused on the next opponent and that is Tottenham now. So, we will try to prepare the team the same way we have the whole season and hopefully the team, the players, can bring the energy, the same mentality towards the game as they've brought throughout the whole season.

"And the fans, we are expecting from them the same."

With that mindset in place, any satisfaction the head coach will draw from the weekend is entirely dependent on the result.

When asked if he will be able to enjoy the game, Slot replied: "I enjoy going to Anfield every single [time] but the moment the referee blows the whistle, or even before that when I do my meetings, of course the focus is on trying to get the points or the win over the line.

"We're only settling for a win and a point is not enough. The moment you enjoy is mostly when the referee blows the whistle; these are the three, four or five minutes when you are really happy, when you walk off the pitch.

"Then you walk into a dressing room, where you always see one or two players who are not as happy as I am because they haven't played, so then already you start to think, 'OK, this has to be managed again as well.' And then I need to go to [do] the media.

"It's mostly three, four or five minutes that you are really happy and then 'normal' manager life starts again. Enjoying is what you do after the referee has blown his whistle."

Joe Gomez fitness update

Slot is bidding to become just the fifth boss in history to win the Premier League during his first season in the competition.

Although he could not have foreseen his debut campaign playing out exactly the way it has, the Dutchman knows being in charge of Liverpool comes with the requirement of delivering success.

Slot said: "I've said many times if you come in, in the first days you are here you first of all look around you, how the training ground looks and then you start to work with your players.

"Then you are trying to get your playing style across, which we already knew we wouldn't change that much. But when players come back from holidays, when they have come back from playing for their national teams, sometimes you need to refresh them a bit and what is expected over here.

"Then, if you walk through this door, if you walk in here or at Anfield, you know the expectations, you know the expectations are this club has to win trophies – and that doesn't change when I walk through the door.

"The good thing is, as I have said a few times before, most managers work here for a long time, so you have a lot of chances to win something.

"You are aware of that but it's not the first thing you think about when you walk through this door."

Luis Diaz's Premier League century and 11 more pre-Tottenham stats - Liverpool FC
Description

The attacker, who arrived from FC Porto in January 2022, can become the 60th Red to reach a century of outings in the competition.

To date, Diaz has scored 27 top-flight goals for the club and is the Premier League's fourth-highest-scoring Colombian of all time, behind only Juan Pablo Angel (44), Hamilton Ricard (31) and Hugo Rodallega (29).

Read on for more statistics ahead of the encounter with Spurs at Anfield, provided by Opta…

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 30 Premier League home games against Tottenham, going unbeaten in 13 since a 2-0 loss in May 2011.

With five fixtures remaining, the Reds have already won as many Premier League matches this season as they did in 2023-24 (24).

A victory in this game would also see them equal their points tally from the previous campaign (82).

Arne Slot's men have scored at least once in each of their last 29 Premier League matches since the 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in September. It is the second-longest scoring streak in a single campaign after Arsenal, who scored in all 38 games in 2001-02.

Mohamed Salah has scored 15 goals against Tottenham in all competitions, only netting more versus Manchester United (16) in his European club career. Eleven of those 15 strikes have come in the Premier League, with only Alan Shearer (14) netting more against Spurs.

Diaz has only netted more Premier League goals against AFC Bournemouth (five) than Spurs (four).

Trent Alexander-Arnold only has more Premier League assists against Arsenal (seven), Newcastle United (six) and West Ham United (five) than he does versus Tottenham (four).

None of Tottenham's last 15 league games on the road have finished in a draw (won five, lost 10).

Tottenham have conceded 10 goals versus Liverpool this season, losing 6-3 in the Premier League and 4-0 in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. They last conceded more against an opponent in 2013-14 (11 versus Manchester City), while the most they have conceded is 14 (against Chelsea in 2001-02).

Explained: Liverpool's Premier League title permutations - Liverpool FC
Description

The Reds know victory in their next fixture – at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (April 27) – would definitely seal a record-equalling 20th top-flight title.

But there is a possibility first place could be secured in midweek as Arsenal are in action against Crystal Palace.

If the Gunners are beaten at Emirates Stadium in the 8pm BST kick-off, they would be unable to exceed Liverpool's current points haul of 79.

A draw on Wednesday would keep the title race mathematically alive, leaving Arsenal 12 points behind. The table-topping Reds do, however, currently possess a superior goal difference.

If that game ends even, Liverpool would then require just a point versus Spurs to be confirmed as Premier League winners.

Caoimhin Kelleher's Plymouth preview: 'Our mentality is to win every game'

Description

Kelleher made his 16th start of 2024-25 as Spurs were vanquished and, previewing Sunday’s next outing, the goalkeeper opened up on the hunger shared throughout the Liverpool squad for more.

“In the last few seasons we have obviously got to some finals. I think it’s just the mentality in the whole group is always spot on,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“We want to win every game we’re involved in, and I think that’s kind of the mentality – game by game. Obviously we’re a difficult team to beat in cup competitions. We want to win every competition we’re in. It’s that mentality to go out and win every game.

“We’re happy with the League Cup now we’re in the final. That’s a few weeks away now so that’ll be on the backburner. Focus will go towards the cup and the league as well.

“We have important games in both, all focus will be on that, we won’t take anything for granted and we want [the chance] to get more trophies than just the League Cup.”

Plymouth currently prop up England’s second tier but come in to the clash with the Reds having inflicted only a sixth league defeat of the season on play-off-chasing West Bromwich Albion last time out.

Miron Muslic’s team already have a Premier League scalp in the FA Cup, too, having won 1-0 away at Brentford in round three.

FA Cup fifth-round draw details

“I think obviously it’s going to be difficult,” said Kelleher. “It’s obviously a massive game for them, us coming there is going to be huge. They’re going to be ready.

“The fans are going to be ready for us. It’s going to be a tough game. We want to go there and get a win, and we need to be ready for a tough game as well.

“Maybe they’re not having the best season but that kind of goes out of the window in a cup tie. They might see it as a chance to ignite their season and get something going, especially with us coming into town.

“It’s going to be a massive day for them. We know they’ll be well up for it.”

Slot shuffled his squad when the Reds eased past Accrington Stanley 4-0 at Anfield in the previous round last month.
