Arne Slot's side secured the club its 20th top-flight crown with four games left to play in the campaign when they overcame Spurs thanks to goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

The visitors took the lead with 12 minutes on the clock through Dominic Solanke but were 3-1 down at the break following first-half responses from Diaz, Mac Allister and Gakpo.

A finish from Mohamed Salah and Destiny Udogie own goal after the break then made sure of the victory, which took Liverpool’s points haul to an unassailable 82.

The full-time whistle produced scenes of joy and emotion as the Anfield crowd celebrated a first in-person title victory in 35 years.

Team news

Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to the starting XI, replacing Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley.

Alisson, Van Dijk, Konate, Diaz (Elliott, 76), Szoboszlai (Jones, 67), Mac Allister (Nunez, 83), Salah, Gakpo (Jota, 67), Robertson, Gravenberch, Alexander-Arnold (Endo, 76).

Unused subs: Kelleher, Chiesa, Tsimikas, Quansah.

First half

The home supporters marked the occasion accordingly and, in a defeating atmosphere, the Reds made a bright start.

Salah curled just off-target inside the opening 120 seconds before Gakpo threatened with a close-range poke and then an overhead kick.

But it would be Tottenham who took the lead somewhat against the run of play, with Solanke the first to meet James Maddison’s out-swinging corner and heading into Alisson Becker’s net.

The Reds’ response was one of champions, though.

Anfield erupted when Diaz slid in to nudge home Dominik Szoboszlai’s pull-back from the touchline. The flag was raised to indicate the assister was offside but a VAR review quickly overturned the on-field decision and the scoreline was 1-1.

The decibel levels surged to a whole new level in the 24th minute when Mac Allister’s thunderbolt gave the hosts the lead.

The Argentine picked up a loose ball near the edge of the Spurs penalty area and decided to take aim. His drive flew into the top corner, leaving a full-stretch Guglielmo Vicario with no chance.

Gakpo increased Liverpool’s advantage nine minutes later, the Dutchman scoring with a reverse finish after jinking past several challenges following a corner that had failed to be cleared.

Second half

A sweeping move not long after restart should have produced the Reds’ fourth goal but Gakpo opted to pass instead of shoot having been sent through with a neat give-and-go with Mac Allister.

It was coming, however, and the man to provide it would be Salah.

The Egyptian was given the ball by Szoboszlai on a counter-attack and duly cut inside onto his left foot to fire a low effort past Vicario in the Kop-end net.

LFC reminds fans to work together to ensure safe arrival of team bus - Liverpool FC
Description

The club would like supporters to keep welcoming the team bus – it’s a big part of the Anfield pre-match atmosphere – but to do that safely, the road must be kept clear on Anfield Road. If it’s blocked, there will be no choice but to reroute the team bus.

Fans attending the match can help to make sure the team gets the welcome they deserve without compromising safety by staying on the footpaths, staying off the road and by using the whole length of Anfield Road.

Rerouting the team bus is not something the club wants to do for any game, but it is something that will happen if the route is deemed unsafe.

LFC’s safety team and Merseyside Police officers will be coordinating the operation on Anfield Road today. Please support the guidance from the police and stewards if asked to move to a safer position in order for the team bus to pass safely and arrive at the stadium in good time.

The club will continue to work with matchday stakeholders, including Merseyside Police and leading fan groups, to ensure the best outcome for everyone involved to enjoy the remainder of the Premier League season.

Thank you once again for your continued support.

Virgil van Dijk's message ahead of Liverpool v Tottenham

'One more push' - Virgil van Dijk's message ahead of Liverpool v Tottenham - Liverpool FC
Description

Liverpool go into their meeting with Tottenham Hotspur knowing they need one more point to be crowned Premier League champions.

And, in his notes for the matchday programme, captain Van Dijk writes: “One more push. One more job to be done. One more big effort needed, from each and every one of us. One more.

“All season long I have been speaking about the need to focus only on the next game, the next challenge. That mindset has been so important for us as we have chased our goals; we deal with what’s there in front of us rather than getting carried away with the bigger picture, with the outside noise.

“Sunday, of course, is going to be a little more difficult in that respect. Because while we are still going to be concentrating on the task in front of us, which is a tough game against Tottenham Hotspur, we also know what the day means for everyone associated with the club.

“And, well, it means everything.

“To win the Premier League is special, however and wherever you do it. But to do it at Anfield, in front of the most incredible supporters in the world? That’s something else entirely. It’s our dream, it’s your dream, and our aim on Sunday is to make sure that dream comes true.

“We can only do that, however, by doing the things that have put us in this position in the first place.

“By working hard, by being together, by being willing to run and to suffer and to sacrifice for one another, for the cause. After all those months, all those games, do you think we’re going to change our approach now? No chance.

“We know what is on the line, but first and foremost we are professionals. We have a job to do, business to take care of. And as ever, I am expecting a very tough game.

“If I’ve learnt anything during my time in England, it’s that you should never take anything for granted when it comes to Premier League football.

“You have to earn every yard, every point, every victory. We saw that last weekend at Leicester and the weekend before against West Ham. We’ve seen it all season, how hard we’ve had to work to be in this position. We’ve had to give everything, week after week, game after game.

“Nothing has been given to us, and I don’t expect that to change on Sunday.

“It is clear that Tottenham are not where they want or expect to be in terms of their own league position, but that doesn’t matter on the day. I am expecting a very tough game against a very talented team. They too have a job to do, remember.

“We are planning to be at our best, and we need you guys to be at yours too. I have spoken many times about the importance of Anfield. It really can make the difference and I can’t wait to see, hear and feel you all on Sunday. You all have a part to play.

“So be loud and be proud. Get to the stadium early and give us your support. Make the place a sea of red, a wall of noise. Sing your hearts out and let’s do this together.

“One more push. One more.”
