Man Utd problems still obvious despite Fulham win and are Tottenham boring? - Premier League hits and misses

A winning feeling - but United's problems still plain to see

Ruben Amorim had stressed the importance of the result over the performance before Man Utd's 1-0 victory at Fulham and his hope will be the momentum of picking up three points on the road can give his side a boost.

They certainly looked like they needed one during the majority of this match. United's caution was plain to see as they defended in numbers and looked for the safe option in possession. It was notable before the game that Fulham had been listed as favourites - and the visitors played up to their underdog tag.

This result won't mask the problems Amorim has to solve. He himself noted the lack of thrust in the final third and the question marks over both Rasmus Hojlund and his replacement Joshua Zirkzee remain. Alejandro Garnacho, a player they could well sell before the deadline, looked the most likely to provide a spark amid an otherwise uninspiring attack. Fulham, despite a poor attacking set-piece record themselves, almost exposed that well-documented United weakness late on.

Yet, with a Europa League trip to Bucharest on Thursday followed by home games against Crystal Palace and then Leicester in the FA Cup, perhaps there is a chance for United to build some positive rhythm to improve their short-term outlook. The bigger picture remains a major work in progress.

'Boring, boring Tottenham Hotspur?'

Ange Postecoglou is famed for his attack, attack, attack style. You score two, we'll score three, mate.

It has been the bedrock of why he has got to the top table of football management. But there are signs starting to emerge that his football is quite easy to stop. Even Leicester, who have conceded on average 2.5 goals per game in their last nine games, managed to restrict Spurs to crumbs in terms of chance creation in their 2-1 victory.

Yes, fatigue is a big issue for Postecoglou and his injury-hit squad but to create 1.1 worth of expected goals against a team that are odds-on to be playing Championship football again next season is not good enough when you consider the highs this team have hit under the big Aussie.

As the clock ticked down with Spurs chasing an equaliser, even the boost of having seven added minutes in their favour did not kickstart any sort of momentum. That figure could have been 70 minutes and still Spurs would not have found an equaliser. Their attacks were predictable and lacking quality. Across their last 13 games Spurs are only averaging 1.3 expected goals per 90 and have struggled to break down the likes of Wolves, Ipswich and now Leicester.

Are you not entertained? No, I wasn't today.

West Ham show improvements under Potter

Four games in and West Ham are starting to show signs of life under Graham Potter. After a tepid performance against Crystal Palace last weekend, something was needed to prove things are headed in the right direction.

And the Hammers fans might have feared the worst in the opening 10 minutes of the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa - but once their team found a foothold, they did not let go.

Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham - Report and highlights

As it happened | Teams | Match stats | Live Premier League table

They were perhaps aided by Villa's disarray once Tyrone Mings was substituted, but taking advantage of those situations is not to be passed up.

Max Kilman should be credited with keeping West Ham in the game when they were under pressure, and Lucas Paqueta for spearheading the Hammers' comeback.

Since Potter came in, West Ham's numbers have been steadily increasing. Their performance, particularly in the second half, is more akin to what Potter does and what the Hammers want to see.

Now it is a case of consistency. Can they forgo the slow start? Can the draw be turned into a win? Hopefully these questions will be answered in the coming weeks.

Quirky Brentford penalty trick sums them up as a club

Brentford are a football club constantly looking for marginal gains and in the 2-1 win at Crystal Palace, we saw another.

With Bryan Mbeumo stepping up for his retaken penalty, both Yoane Wissa and Keane Lewis-Potter were seen celebrating even while the Brentford talisman was strolling up to make contact with the ball.

"That's like a distraction thing to maybe put off the goalkeeper," said Jamie Redknapp. "I've never seen that in my life, it's crazy!"

Asked if it is a tactic, or just confidence, Thomas Frank added: "They are very good friends, they know each other very well and so probably a bit of both."

So no wonder Brentford have a 95-per-cent penalty success rate in the Premier League, the joint-best ratio in the history of the competition.

Alongside the scoring-in-the-first-minute reputation they have delighted fans with this season, it is another in a long list of quirky tactics up the Bees' sleeve.

Esse's dream Palace debut

For two seasons, Romain Esse had been tearing it up in the Championship as one of Millwall's most promising players and, by the time he left the club on January 18, he had played 66 times for the Lions. He does not turn 20 until May.

So there was no surprise when he was snapped up by Crystal Palace for a fee that could reportedly rise to £14.5m.

Esse has been immediately integrated into the Eagles' first-team squad and made his debut as a late substitute in the game against Brentford, with Oliver Glasner's side trailing 2-0. His impact was almost instant, with his first goal coming just 119 seconds after his introduction.

He became the first teenager to score on his Premier League debut (19 years, 258 days) since Rayan Ait-Nouri for Wolves in October 2020 (19y 146d).

Tottenham in crisis? Ange Postecoglou under pressure but chairman Daniel Levy is in the firing line after Leicester loss

Description

The first chants of "we want Levy out" were audible long before the implosion which condemned Spurs to their latest defeat. The home fans were airing their dissatisfaction early in the first half. What happened later just increased the volume.

It was the embattled Ange Postecoglou, of course, who had to face the cameras afterwards. That is the lot of the head coach. But he is not the main target for the ire of the home supporters. Chairman Daniel Levy is the man in the firing line.

Levy has of course transformed the club during his tenure, taking Spurs into their magnificent new stadium and overhauling the infrastructure. On the pitch, though, supporters feel they are seeing same old problems. A culture of underachievement remains.

The discontent is not new but recent events have brought it into sharp focus. Spurs are on a run of one win from 12 Premier League games. They have lost 13 out of 23 this season in total. Only Leicester, Wolves and Southampton have tasted defeat more often. Those sides are in a relegation fight. Spurs, in 15th, might now be too.

Spurs 1-2 Leicester: Match report and highlights

As it happened: How Spurs collapsed to another loss

Teams | Match stats: Leicester's win in numbers

They are beset by injuries, with James Maddison the latest player to be sidelined, joining an absentee list which stretches into double figures. And yet, nearly four weeks into the January transfer window, their only senior signing is the 21-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

"The players need help," said Postecoglou in his press conference. He added that the club are "working hard" to "alleviate the problems" but it has become a familiar refrain. Supporters certainly feel that way. That much was clear from the mood inside the ground.

Levy can of course point to heavy investment in previous transfer windows. But, even without the injuries, the squad remains imbalanced. Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have shown huge promise but, together with Wilson Odobert, they were signed in the summer with the future in mind.

The present-day problems, such as a glaring lack of defensive depth, have not been addressed and Spurs are paying a heavy price as the injuries continue to pile up. Postecoglou's side have now conceded at least two goals in five straight Premier League games.

Postecoglou is not exempt from blame, of course. His injury list is mostly down to bad luck but his unwavering devotion to playing his way is a contributing factor. Even as the absentee list has increased, he has continued to send out his side to play at breakneck speed.

Their intensity can be seen in Premier League tracking data which, ahead of the weekend's games, showed Spurs top among Premier League clubs for both sprints and distance covered. The physical demands of Postecoglou's approach are taking a toll on the players.

It is a vicious circle. Without options to rotate, Postecoglou is asking for more and more from those still standing. He was booed for his decision to take off Richarlison in the second half but insisted the striker was "feeling his groin" and "should have come off at half-time". Pape Sarr, he added, should not have played at all but had to because of Maddison's absence.

The hope is that Spurs' form will pick up as the injury list begins to clear. But asked in his press conference if he expects to still be in place when that happens, Postecoglou was realistic. "Who knows?" he said. "A fair chunk will say no."

And besides, the injuries do not explain away the current problems entirely.

Spurs are having to cope without four members of their first-choice back five but they were losing games even with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario starting in addition to Pedro Porro earlier this season, with Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Brighton among the sides to beat them.

They are still capable of spectacular results. Even this season they have put four goals past Manchester City and Aston Villa. They have also beaten Liverpool and Manchester United. But the defensive openness evident in spells against Leicester has been a theme of Postecoglou's tenure.

He again talked up the efforts of his players afterwards, insisting they remain behind him. "The players are committed to what we're doing," he said. "When you are a manager of a football club, you can feel vulnerable and isolated, I don't feel that."

But his assertion that they could achieve "something special" in the remaining months of the season felt fanciful in extreme given the context. Spurs are a long way from where they want to be - and have been for too long. Postecoglou is not the only one feeling the heat.

Who's to blame? What the fans say

We invited Spurs fans to comment on the side's predicament in our match blog after the game. Read on for a selection of their comments.

Spurs12345: "Not the manger's fault. How on earth can you expect Spurs to perform at the highest level with no first-team squad, no financial backing and the injuries? They do better in cups currently because the pace is lesser. Time Enic sell up and help the club move forward by leaving."

Alfie: "Ange should resign to save his own career. Levy might be a good businessman but he is a shocking football club owner. Levy lures in decent managers with false promises and then chucks them under the bus. Ange isn't at fault in my opinion."

James: "Ange has to go, his system is flawed and he's too stubborn to change it. The team structure is such that any breakdown in play affords huge spaces for any team to attack. Levy and the board are the biggest problem at Spurs, but Ange will take Spurs down."

Fulham get us underway...

FREE highlights after FT in THIS blog! 🚨 | ALL PL Highlights ▶️

Here we go!

Out come the teams at Craven Cottage!

Which version of Manchester United will we see today? The worst version in the history of the club again? Or a team that Ruben Amorim wants to see?

As Marco Silva is here, we need to talk about Fulham too. Can they open up a ten-point gap over United this evening!

Team news reminder!

Right, just over five minutes to go until kick-off at Craven Cottage, here's a reminder of your two teams:

Fulham: Leno; Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Robinson; Berge, Lukic; Wilson, Smith Rowe, Iwobi, Jimenez

Man Utd: Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dalot; Garnacho, Amad, Hojlund

Fulham favourites to beat Man Utd...

Sky Sports' Peter Smith at Craven Cottage:

"Fulham favourites to beat Man Utd? Who'd have thought it.

"Of course, under Marco Silva, Fulham have been playing some wonderful stuff this season. But it's a damning reflection of how far Man Utd have fallen - and their dreadful form under Ruben Amorim.

"After snatching a late win over Rangers having been pegged back at Old Trafford, can United back up that result with an upset victory at Craven Cottage?!

"Let's find out..."

Amorim: We want to be better on the ball

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim

"A better performance but even if we win not playing so well, it's important for us.

"But we have to focus on the performance. We want to improve with the ball, give us more time without suffering."

Onana in the spotlight

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has made three errors to leading to an opposition goal this season, the most by a Man Utd player in a campaign since David de Gea in 2019-20 (3).

His save ratio of 63.6% is the lowest by a Red Devils goalkeeper since Anders Lindegaard in 2012-13 (55.3%).

Fulham to strike first?

Manchester United have gone 1-0 down in eight of their last nine Premier League matches, while since Ruben Amorim’s first game on 24 November, no side has conceded first more times than the Red Devils (8, level with Southampton).

Fulham out to end long wait for a win over Man Utd at the Cottage

Fulham have won just one of their last 18 Premier League games against Manchester United (D3 L14), picking up a 2-1 win at Old Trafford last season.

Since losing twice away to Fulham in 2009 (0-2 in March, 0-3 in December), Manchester United are unbeaten in eight Premier League visits to Craven Cottage, winning the last seven in a row (D1).

'This is not sustainable' - but how bad are Man Utd's finances?

Manchester United revealed they lost £300m over the last three years and must make cuts to comply with PSR requirements.

Van der Sar back at the Cottage

Former Fulham and Man Utd goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is back at Craven Cottage tonight, with a special tribute to him set for half-time.

Expect goals?!

Fulham have scored exactly two goals in each of their last five Premier League matches. Only once in their top-flight history have they netted 2+ goals in six games in a row, doing so between February and April 1966.

Since losing 1-0 to Man Utd on the opening day of the season, Fulham have only failed to score in one of their 21 Premier League matches, a goalless draw against bottom side Southampton in December. The Cottagers are averaging 1.6 goals per game in 2024-25, their best ratio in a Premier League season, while their 14.1 shots per game are their best since 2011-12 (14.2).

Fulham unchanged

Fulham name the same side which beat Leicester last time out.

With only Kenny Tete and Reiss Nelson on the sidelines, boss Marco Silva had a near-full squad to choose from.

However, midfielder Sasa Lukic will have to be careful - if he's booked tonight it will be his 10th yellow of the season and he'll be set for a two-game ban.

Five changes for United as Onana returns in goal

Man Utd have made five changes from the side which beat Rangers on Thursday - with Andre Onana returning in goal.

The shot-stopper looked to be under pressure for his place when his mistake in the loss to Brighton last weekend was followed by Altay Bayindir playing well in the Europa League.

There are more changes in defence from the midweek win, with Harry Maguire in for Leny Yoro, who came off in that game, and Noussair Mazraoui back in the squad and into the XI.

Toby Collyer and Christian Eriksen make way, with Manuel Ugarte back in the fold.

Meanwhile, up front, Rasmus Hojlund takes Joshua Zirkzee's spot.

Victor Lindelof is back in the squad after injury and Matthijs de Ligt has been cleared to play.

Jones Knows: Fulham to show why they're favourites

Sky Sports' Lewis Jones:

"Fulham going off clear favourites to beat Manchester United in the Premier League is a little mind blowing to football fans like me who have lived through the dominance of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

"Those days are long gone now and such has been their poor recruitment in recent years, where they've blown over £160m on Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony, the chance of a successful rebuild with the purse strings now tightened looks slim.

"Fulham are the more cohesive, better coached, organised and confident team, playing some great stuff this season under the criminally underrated Marco Silva.

"It's why they are as short as 5/4 with Sky Bet for maximum points. A price many will snap up - and I can totally see why."

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1

Last time out: United grab late winner vs Rangers

Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time winner for Manchester United as they beat Rangers 2-1 at Old Trafford despite Cyriel Dessers’ late equaliser on Thursday.

The Rangers forward had looked to have secured a point for the Scottish club in the 88th minute when he sensationally bested Harry Maguire to score a beautiful goal and cancel out Jack Butland's earlier own goal but Fernandes then volleyed in superbly to secure victory.

Ange Postecoglou: Under-pressure Spurs boss believes 'a fair chunk' will say he should be sacked after Leicester loss

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Ange Postecoglou admits a "a fair chunk" of people will think he should be sacked as Tottenham boss but believes his players are giving him everything.

Spurs blew a 1-0 half-time lead against Leicester to suffer a fourth straight league defeat, while their only top-flight win in their last 11 games came at bottom-side Southampton.

Tottenham have suffered back-to-back defeats against struggling sides, having been beaten at Everton - in a game which saw them go 3-0 down at half-time - followed by the defeat by Leicester, who had previously lost seven consecutive league games.

Spurs 1-2 Leicester: Match report & highlights

As it happened: How Spurs collapsed to another loss

Teams | Match stats: Leicester's win in numbers

Spurs are still in the mix to win a first trophy in 17 years with the north London side in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, the FA Cup fourth round and on course to reach the last 16 of the Europa League.

But their alarming Premier League form, which has seen them drop closer to the bottom three than the top half of the table, has put Postecoglou under immense pressure after seven league defeats in his last eight matches.

When asked if he should still be in charge once all of his key players return from injury, he said: "Who knows? A fair chunk will say no.

"When you are a manager of a football club, you can feel vulnerable and isolated, I don't feel that. The players are giving everything. I focus on that and try and support the players."

Postecoglou revealed that both Richarlison and Pape Sarr, in an ideal world, would not have started against Leicester but such are their injury issues, he had no choice but to play them.

He said: "It doesn't come into my conscious trying to convince people, I've been around long enough that people will judge where we are at the moment, which hasn't been good enough.

"If people want to put context to that then that's fine. The players are giving everything they can. Two players shouldn't have been out there but they are desperate to turn our fortunes around. In the next 10 days we should get some significant players back which will help. We still have fantastic opportunities to make an impact - I'm sure that will happen."

Despite the defeat and their precarious position in the Premier League, Postecoglou still holds out hope that Spurs can do "something special" this season in the cup competitions.

He added: "The players are committed to what we're doing. That's important to me. I believe in it. This is as low as we've been this year but in the next three months we can do something really special. The players believe that. Right now it's hard to visualise that with our circumstances. Just look at the absences but they will be back. All these things aren't allowing us to get any momentum. When those things change we can make an impact."

O'Hara's Spurs rant: 'Ange is out of his depth!'

Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara launched an extraordinary rant on Sky Sports News following the defeat to Leicester, claiming Postecoglou is "out of his depth" and will be sacked soon.

O'Hara said: "Ange Postecoglou is out of his depth. Man management, in-game management, not good enough today. Running out of ideas.

"He tried to change the tactics against Everton last week. We're 3-0 down at half-time. We go 2-1 down against Leicester, and I don't see a change in the way that we play.

"I don't see a change in the way we do things. Miles off it, all of them. And leaders on the football pitch who are meant to be good players, not stepping up to the plate.

"The problem is the fact that you've got players who are available not doing the business. You've got Daniel Levy who doesn't want to put his hand in his pocket and bring in players when the team is decimated with injuries, and he's still not getting a player over the line because he doesn't want to pay the money.

"And you've got a manager in Postecoglou who's so stubborn and won't change the way he plays. He's got no plan B. He's got no plan C. He won't change the way he wants to play.

"And they've run out of ideas. Spurs run out of ideas because they only know one way to play. He hasn't got an idea how to get it done. They're in a relegation fight. Spurs are in a relegation fight. I'm telling you now.

"Teams are picking up underneath them. Every team around them, if you look at it, West Ham sacked their manager. Everton sacked their manager. Man Utd sacked their manager. Wolves sacked their manager. Do you really think they're in danger of relegation? Of course they are.

"The run is unacceptable. Spurs are in a relegation fight and they need to buck up their ideas, sign some good players quickly and make a decision on what you're doing with Ange Postecoglou. Because at the moment, what he's giving out ain't good enough.

"I know there's injuries and I know there's problems, but that is unacceptable. You can't lose 13 games in the Premier League as a Spurs manager. I know you've got the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool, who are by far the best team in Europe at the moment, and you're clinging on to the hope that we might get to a final.

"And Ange gives it all, 'we win a trophy in my second season'. Do me a favour. You're the Spurs manager. You're 15th in the table. You've lost 13 games.

"That's not acceptable. Any other manager, Harry Redknapp, Juande Ramos, all these managers, Pochettino, Conte, Mourinho, if they were 15th in the table as Spurs manager, they would be out the door. Gone.

"See you later. Why is Ange getting a pass? Why? I don't get it. Is it because of Mourinho and Conte and the fact that he plays attacking football, is it? Who cares about attacking football? Seriously, who cares? You've got to be organised."

He added: "I think maybe you give Ange the Carabao Cup game against Liverpool but then you're clutching at straws. I think he will be sacked after that Liverpool second leg. He needs help. Daniel Levy has had the opportunity to sign players. He could have helped him but I just don't understand what he's trying to do and who he is trying to get over the line.

"It is embarrassing. Go and make a statement. West Ham have at least tried to go out and sign Duran. Postecoglou needs help. The more I look at the Bournemouth manager [Andoni Iraola], the more I think I wouldn't mind him at Spurs. Bournemouth are organised, but Spurs are so disorganised.

"Bournemouth have injuries, and they're still doing the business. Don't tell me they haven't got issues. You can't just blame everything on injuries. He's not got the best out of the players he's got.

"I think he will get the sack after the Liverpool game. We will get beat. We'll keep him on until then because maybe he deserves that game. I think Liverpool will be better than us on the night and they will go through, but the problem you then have is, who comes in?'

"There's no point having Ryan Mason until the end of the season - you might as well stick with Ange."

Son: Leicester loss painful

Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son described the loss to Leicester as "painful".

The South Korean, who has been at the club for nearly a decade, told Sky Sports: "Breaking down or scoring goals is always hard when it's a day that is not happening and you always get more frustrated than you should be.

"We were very frustrated and made the wrong decisions. It's painful."

The 32-year-old added: "Mentally we have to refresh and go again because we have a game in three days. Sometimes it's really tough.

"We came back from the win in Germany and lost an important game in the league. It's very tough."

Spurs slumped to a fourth straight Premier League loss as strugglers Leicester fought back from a goal down to claim their first win in nine games at a mutinous Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The home fans aimed chants of 'we want Levy out' at watching chairman Daniel Levy as Ange Postecoglou's injury-hit side conceded twice in four minutes straight after half-time. They then booed at the final whistle as Spurs' dismal season hit a new low.

The hosts had led courtesy of Richarlison's first-half header from Pedro Porro's cross but Jamie Vardy levelled from Bobby De Cordova-Reid's low cross only 57 seconds after the break.

The hosts were stunned by the equaliser and conceded what turned out to be the decisive goal when they backed off and allowed Bilal El Khannouss to find the bottom corner from outside the box.

Spurs came into the game having enjoyed some respite from their wretched Premier League form with a Europa League win at Hoffenheim but it came at a cost, with James Maddison joining their double-figure injury list due to "soreness" from that game.

Richarlison's goal put them in command at half-time but Leicester exposed their defensive vulnerability ruthlessly, with Vardy and El Khannouss turning the game on its head in front of the delirious travelling fans, whose celebrations contrasted with the discontent of the home supporters.

Spurs tried to rally, with Porro's deflected free-kick striking the crossbar, but they lacked ideas otherwise in the latter stages, with Heung-Min Son having twice been denied by Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk in the first half.

The defeat extends their winless run to seven Premier League games, deepening the sense of crisis at the club and keeping them in 15th place in the table. Leicester, meanwhile, climb out of the relegation zone into 17th.

Levy was the main target for the home fans' ire but there were also boos for Postecoglou's decision to withdraw goalscorer Richarlison, although the Spurs boss later explained the forward was "feeling his groin" having only recently returned from injury.

Ange: Defeat hurts but players are giving everything

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou said: "It hurts a lot because the players gave everything again.

"We can look at a lot of things, but in terms of effort, I can't ask any more of this group. They're just giving everything they possibly can.

"Things didn't go our way today. We've created some good opportunities but unfortunately, things didn't drop for us.

"It's a very disappointing defeat, especially at home. But not because the players weren't trying, and that's the main thing.

"The players are giving everything they can, and I think that's all we can ask for as a football club and me as a manager.

"If there was more to give, if they could find another way of doing things, then OK. But they're trying their hardest and that's all anyone can ask for."

O'Hara slams 'disgraceful, pathetic' Spurs display

Speaking on Sky Sports News, former Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara said: "It was disgraceful. I mean, that is a disgraceful performance. Pathetic second half, nowhere near good enough.

"An inquest needs to be had into what Ange was telling them at half-time. They're going, they're 1-0 up, keep the game tight.

"It was edgy in the first half, nervous performance, but you got your noses in front [so] to come out and play like we did in the second half. And it was just desperation after that. Leicester City were the best team.

"Over the course of 90 minutes, they were the better side. They played well in the first half and they didn't quite have the end product, but I thought they got into good areas.

"Tottenham didn't trouble the keeper once, apart from the ball from Porro, which he swings in, which is a great cross for Richarlison, who'd done nothing else in the game, by the way, gets his head on it and scores.

"That's his job, to score goals. But after that, when Leicester went 2-1 up, they were non-existent, Tottenham. The performance was pathetic.

"Top players are meant to be at that football club in terms of Son, Kulusevski, Bentancur, Richarlison, Porro. It was one of the worst performances I've seen. Again, another shocking result, another shocking performance.

"I don't know how Ange can stay in the job. I don't know what needs to happen. And I don't know what happens at the top with Daniel Levy."
