Revealed: Why Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign Ademola Lookman in the winter transfer window

Reigning UEFA Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur turned down the chance to sign Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman twice this season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 28-year-old was linked with Spurs in the summer, although he only wanted to play for Inter Milan at the time, before he was offered to the North London side again during the January transfer window.

Tottenham declined, and that decision now appears immeasurably costly, as they face the possibility of relegation to the EFL Championship for the first time in almost five decades.

Lookman has since made a strong start following his switch to Atlético Madrid, scoring four goals and providing two assists in seven games for Diego Simeone's men.

Why Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign Lookman

According to the Sun, Tottenham, under Thomas Frank, passed on the chance to sign the Nigerian even though they'd lost several first-team players to injuries during that period, leaving the attack short of depth and consistency.

Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke were out injured, while Brennan Johnson sealed a move to fellow London side Crystal Palace.

It seemed ideal for the two-time English Champions to go all out for Ademola Lookman, but instead, they chose to remain cautious in the market.

Tottenham's Director of Football, Johan Lange, recently defended the club’s quiet window, claiming they had to remain disciplined to avoid signing quick fixes, hence why they refused to sign the 2024 CAF Player of the Year.

Lookman eventually completed a deadline-day move from Atalanta to Atlético Madrid for around £30 million, and his early performances have intensified questions around Tottenham’s decision.

A brilliant debut against Real Betis was followed by an outstanding show in the 4-0 thumping of Barcelona in the Copa del Rey

The Super Eagles forward made an instant impression, scoring four goals in his first six appearances under Diego Simeone.

His quick adaptation has reinforced the view that he could have provided an immediate solution to Tottenham’s attacking struggles.

Surprisingly, Spurs splashed almost 40 million euros to bring in Connor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, thus paving the path for Lookman to move to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Tottenham Hotspur have since fired Thomas Frank and hired ex-Juventus manager Igor Tudor. The Croatian's first game in charge of the Lillywhites was the North London derby against Arsenal, and it ended in a 1-4 loss to the Gunners.

Spurs are now 16th on the Premier League table, just four points above 18th-placed West Ham United and with games against Liverpool, Sunderland, Chelsea and Aston Villa still to come, Harry Kane's former side are in real danger.

Osimhen joined the Turkish Giants on loan from Napoli, and made his mark at RAMS Park, scoring 37 goals and providing eight assists in 41 games for Okan Buruk's side.

The prolific goalscorer also lifted the Turkish League title and league cup. Although they want to keep him at the club beyond this summer, the Super Eagles star has offers from several clubs in Europe and beyond.

Osimhen has rejected two offers from Saudi Pro League side, Al-Hilal, including a $46m annual salary package.

Galatasaray still harbour faint hopes of the Nigerian choosing to permanently sign for them after he rejected Al-Hilal, but they face stiff competition for the signature of the ex-LOSC Lille man.

Manchester United and Premier League winners, Liverpool, who were recently reported to have offered Napoli two players in part exchange, meanwhile interest from Arsenal and Chelsea have grown faint in the past few weeks.

Galatasaray's interest in Tottenham Hotspur forward

As per Turkish outlet, Posta, the name in the frame to replace Osimhen, should he take the mouth-watering offer from Al-Hilal, is Tottenham’s versatile attacker, Richarlison Andrade.

The Lilywhites have a good business history with Galatasaray, with their most recent sale to the Turkish side being Tanguy Ndombele who was an important midfielder in his time at RAMS Park.

According to the report, the UEFA Europa League winners are more than happy to allow the Brazilian leave this summer, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Richarlison joined Thomas Frank's side from Everton for £60m in 2022 off the back of a season where he scored 11 goals and provided five assists for the Toffees in the league.

However, the turn-out on the deal has been less than profitable for Spurs as the 28-year-old's time in London has been laiden with injuries, suspensions and inconsistency in performances. Additionally, he was referred for mental health counselling at some point.

With a new start to come under Thomas Frank, Spurs are prepared to cut their losses with Richarlison, but that'll depend on Victor Osimhen's eventual decision as the transfer market this summer gets even more interesting.

Two-time English Premier League winners, Tottenham Hotspur, are keen on sealing a deal for Super Eagles and Bayer 04 Leverkusen forward, Victor Okoh Boniface, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old scored 21 goals and provided nine assists in 34 games in his debut season, winning the German Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal in a campaign that saw Die Werkself go unbeaten.

As per Give Me Sport, Tottenham Hotspur could win the race to sign Boniface as Bayer Leverkusen are open to parting ways with the Nigerian.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are not short of attacking options as they have Son Heung-Min, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Richarlison, Timo Werner, Dominic Solanke and Mathys Tel. However, the quality up front is telling.

Spurs are currently 16th on the English Premier League table in what has been a dreadful season, even by their own standards. Their only chance of salvaging anything this season is in the UEFA Europa League, where they take on Boniface’s former side, Bodo/Glimt, in the semi-final.

As per the Boy Hotspur, Tottenham are aware of Boniface’s willingness to exit the Bay Arena after he was on their shortlist about a year ago before they signed Solanke from Bournemouth. It is believed that Boniface will be willing to walk the moment Xabi Alonso leaves Leverkusen.

The eight-time FA Cup winners face stiff competition for Boniface as West Ham United are also monitoring the services of the 24-year-old forward.

Should Victor Boniface join Tottenham Hotspur?

If he wants to win trophies? Maybe not. Spurs have barely had any success in nearly two decades of top-flight football, with their last trophy coming in the 2007/2008 season when they won the Carabao Cup.

The opportunity to move to the Premier League might be exciting for the former Union Saint-Gilloise striker as he’s entering the peak years of his career, but he’s made it clear he does not want to play in England; instead, a move to Spain appeals more to Boniface.

Additionally, he’ll only be at the London Stadium to provide competition for Solanke, not to become an outright starter.

Boniface’s potential move to the Saudi Pro League collapsed during the winter transfer window, hinting that if the financial package is right, he might move to the Premier League after all.

Still, it’ll be interesting to see where the goalscorer winds up when he decides to wrap up his spell in the German Bundesliga.

Ange Postecoglu's Spurs join Chelsea and Arsenal in race for Super Eagles striker

English Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur, are keeping tabs on Napoli and Super Eagles striker, Victor James Osimhen, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 25-year-old striker scored 15 goals and provided three assists in 22 starts for Napoli in the league last season, off the back of a successful 2022/2023 season where he won the Golden Boot and lifted the Serie A title with the Italian club.

The former LOSC Lille forward agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain, but a transfer could not materialize as the Parisians were unable to pay his release clause. Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested in the services of the Nigerian forward and are on the lookout for a possible reduction in Napoli’s asking price.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur coach, Ange Postecoglu, is obsessed with signing a new striker this season and is keeping an eye out for Victor Osimhen.

The North-London side are prepared to include their players in a deal for the Nigerian, as they’re keen to fix their goalscoring problems up-front.

Son Heung-Min was the team’s top scorer in the league last year with 17 goals, highlighting the clinical presence Spurs missed upfront following Harry Kane’s bumper move to Bayern Munich last summer.

The Napoli striker is a proven A-list striker and goalscorer who has shown his quality at the highest level, and he’s believed to be a proper solution for Tottenham. He’ll also relieve the ageing Son of the goalscoring duties after the South Korean turned 32 earlier this month.

Outside of Osimhen, Tottenham have been linked with a move for Lille striker, Jonathan David and it is believed that he would be allowed to leave for a fee as low as around £20 million.

Since joining Napoli from Lille in 2020 Osimhen has established himself as one of the world’s best strikers, scoring an impressive 76 goals in 133 appearances.

Tottenham Hotspur line-up €40m bid for Nigeria-eligible Italian wing-back - Soccernet.ng
Description

English Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur, are keen on the services of Italian and Fiorentina wing-back, Michael Kayode, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 19-year-old full-back has been a revelation for the Violas, scoring a goal and providing four assists from a defensive position in 37 games for the Italian side.

After he was released from Juventus academy in 2020, he joined Gozzano and, in July 2021, moved to Fiorentina, spending his first two years in the Primavera squad, where he showed enough to earn a spot in Vincenzo Italiano’s squad for the 2023-24 campaign.

Kayode was born in Italy, has Nigerian roots, and is eligible to play for either country. However, he has represented Italy at the youth level and has made it clear that his future lies away from the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Soccernet.ng earlier reported that the teenage superstar’s performance had drawn attention from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. At the same time, Serie A Champions Inter Milan have identified him as the perfect profile to replace Denzel Dumfries when his contract expires next summer.

According to Italian outlet, Tutto Mercato Web, Ange Postecoglu’s Tottenham Hotspur have also joined the long list of clubs that are interested in Kayode, with Fiorentina valuing the wonderkid at around €40m.

The player is also open to exploring life outside of Fiorentina, as most of the offers on his table are from bigger clubs, none of which are willing to pay Fiorentina’s asking price. The board of the Italian club are set to meet to discuss their evaluation of the player.

Fiorentina have the upper hand in these negotiations, as they have the 19-year-old tied down to a deal that runs until the summer of 2028 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
