Cowboy Beyoncé dazzles nearly sold-out stadium

Reporting from London

Beyoncé signed off the first night of her London residency by telling fans she was "blessed" to get to do what she loves by performing on stage.

She stormed through a seven-act set at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, treating the audience to a spectacle that lasted just shy of three hours.

But despite this being the first opportunity for fans to enjoy the singer's country era in person, slow ticket sales and high prices have been the hot topic around the tour.

Promoters slashed some ticket prices in the run-up to shows in a bid to fill the stadium, prompting some of those who bought seats in advance to feel short-changed.

Beyoncé's rodeo rumbled into London, bringing with it every country cliché you could think of - cowboy hats, horseshoes, tassels and even a gold mechanical bull.

The 40-song setlist relied heavily on tracks from 2024's Cowboy Carter, which was met with critical acclaim, including taking the top album prize at this year's Grammy Awards.

Every element of the performance was flawless, from the 43-year-old superstar's stunning array of costume changes (each one featuring more rhinestones than the last) to the seamless transitions between songs and musical themes.

Much of the talk around the US leg of this tour, which took place in April and May, was the inclusion of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's 13-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, who reportedly begged her parents to dance on the Renaissance tour in 2023, but was denied the opportunity.

She made several appearances throughout the show, earning thunderous applause whilst dancing to an instrumental performance of her mum's 2006 hit Deja Vu.

The teenager certainly seemed to enjoy her moment in the spotlight, unlike her younger sister, Rumi, who came on stage during Protector, shyly mouthing the words whilst being held by Beyoncé.

The show, which is called The Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour as a way of referencing black performers that were segregated from the country scene, often paid homage in its interludes to these artists.

Beyoncé herself previously hinted about being rejected from the country music world in the past and throughout the performance it felt like she was wrestling with this idea.

She blended some of her biggest hits into Cowboy Carter tracks, such as Freedom and Diva, almost to prove that she belonged in this space.

Thursday night's performance certainly showed she is more than qualified to be a country singer, but perhaps that a 60,000 seater stadium is not the best arena for it.

As the night drew darker, Beyoncé delivered an act comprised of tracks from her house-inspired album Renaissance, which immediately lifted the crowd into a party mood.

LED wristbands lit up in array of colours as she belted out Alien Superstar and I'm That Girl - which certainly got the best reaction from fans of the night.

Similarly a section of old classics such as Crazy In Love and Irreplaceable had the crowd singing every word, proving perhaps that a few more classics wouldn't have gone amiss.

'The pricing left a sour taste'

With crowds on their feet, it was difficult to see how sold out the stadium actually was, but with just hours to go until the show there were still thousands of tickets available for sale online.

Despite the tour only stopping in two European cities - London and Paris - the remaining eight dates are not sold out.

Beyoncé's tour has the highest top-priced ticket of any artist visiting the UK in 2025 at £950, with the cheapest costing £71.

Some seats that were sold in the Beyhive fan presale for £620 excluding fees are next to seats that were available this week for £141.60 without fees.

Zulkarnain Sadali flew from Singapore to London to watch Beyoncé perform live and bought a ticket in the pre-sale, which he said cost him "more than £700".

"A couple of weeks ago I checked my ticket and then curiosity got the best of me and I checked the same ticket, or same category, and the price was around £300," he told the BBC.

"I'm really excited for [the show] but I will say the dynamic pricing really left a sour taste in my mouth."

Another fan, Holly Whiteman, said she "panic bought" Beyoncé tickets in a fan pre-sale on Ticketmaster, which were "way up in the nosebleeds" and cost £170 each, when she had initially set a budget of £100.

"Fast forward a few days later, the tickets went on general sale through Tottenham Hotspur and I found tickets for the same show in both the same row and the same section for a much cheaper price," she told the BBC.

"I believe they were at least £50-£70 cheaper per ticket."

Sadali said that despite feeling short-changed, it had not dented his excitement for the tour.

"It's really about the Beyoncé experience, you're not gonna get it anywhere else and I know this sounds like a contradiction, it's worth every cent," he said.

Whiteman said the process had left her a bit "disappointed", but she was still looking forward to the tour.

A Ticketmaster spokesperson told the BBC they do "not use surge pricing or dynamic algorithms to adjust ticket prices", adding that event organisers are responsible for the pricing structures.

"Since tickets typically go on sale at least 3-6 months before the event, organisers may review prices at key points leading up to the show, but they make any adjustments, not an algorithm," they also added.

The BBC also contacted tour promoter Live Nation for comment.

Ticketing expert Reg Walker put the lack of sold-out shows down to several factors, including "overexposure" after her last UK stadium tour, which played five nights at the same venue in 2023.

And the ticket prices are "eye-watering", he told the BBC.

"You might be able to afford to go to one of her concerts where you're effectively paying, in some categories, the same amount of money as a small holiday, but you can't do that on consecutive years.

"The pricing strategy on tickets was clearly far too high," he added.

Walker said there were a lot of "affordably priced" tours coming up - but with so many artists visiting the UK this summer, fans may be picking and choosing who they pay to go and see.

Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, Kendrick Lamar and SZA are all embarking on stadium tours over the coming months, with Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Chapell Roan and Drake headlining festivals.

Tottenham: Brennan Johnson "proving doubters" wrong, sayd Davies

Tottenham: Brennan Johnson "proving doubters" wrong, sayd Davies - BBC
Description

Wales forward Brennan Johnson has "proved people wrong" with his performances for Tottenham, says club and country teammate Ben Davies.

Johnson capped an impressive season by scoring the Europa League final winner against Manchester United last month to earn Spurs their first trophy since 2008.

The goal was Johnson's 20th of the campaign for club and country, a goal-scoring tally which Davies says is a fitting riposte to criticism the forward received in the early stages of his Spurs career following a £45m move from Nottingham Forest.

"Brennan's shown this year that he's a top, top player and proven a lot of people wrong," said Davies, who's preparing for Wales' June World Cup qualifiers.

Johnson struggled for consistency when he first moved to north London, scoring just five goals for Spurs in 2023-24, prompting criticism from fans on social media that even led the player to deactivate his Instagram account.

But Davies believes the 24-year-old's form in 2024-25 - which included scoring in seven successive games for club and country at one point - proves he does have the calibre to thrive at Spurs.

Similarly, Davies believes Johnson can re-produce his club form on the international stage, having scored just five Wales goals since making his senior debut in 2020, and struggled at times to live up to predictions he could become the country's key player following Gareth Bale's retirement.

"I hope so," said Davies when asked if Wales fans will now see the best of Johnson in a red shirt.

"We've got full confidence in him in this Wales squad that he can replicate his form from his club here.

"He works hard, he trains hard, we love having him round the place, and I feel like we've got the best Brennan we can at the moment."

Davies, who along with Johnson is preparing for Wales' World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein on 6 June and Belgium three days later, says there's "no update" on his future at Spurs with his current contract expiring at the end of June.

The 32-year-old played a prominent role in Spurs' run to the Europa League final, but he was an unused substitute in Bilbao as Johnson stole the limelight to end Spurs' 17-year wait for a trophy.

"It was obviously a great feeling (to win the trophy)," said Davies.

"It's always a huge honour to win anything, but it's a tournament I played a lot of games in and it was really nice to get over the line.

"We had a couple of days celebrating before we had another (Premier League) game. But that's football - you just keep going on that merry-go-round."

Description

West Brom have appointed Ryan Mason as their head coach.

The Championship side, who dismissed Tony Mowbray on 21 April, opened talks with Mason, 33, last week and he arrives at the Hawthorns on a three-year deal.

It brings a seven-year coaching career at Tottenham to an end for Mason, who progressed through the club's academy to also play 70 times for his boyhood team.

"This is a huge club with a fantastic infrastructure and an incredible fanbase, and I am excited about what we can achieve together," said Mason.

"Having spoken at length to the board and those at the club I am convinced that Albion is the perfect place for me to be and I can't wait to get started.

"I will bring with me a huge amount of enthusiasm, dedication and ambition, and look forward to a positive future together at such a fantastic club."

Tottenham Hotspur will complete the permanent signing of defender Kevin Danso once the transfer window opens on Sunday, the club have confirmed.

Spurs signed Austria centre-back Danso on loan from French side Lens in February, and he will complete a £21m permanent signing as per the terms of the loan deal.

The 26-year-old made 10 Premier League appearances last season and came on as a late substitute as Spurs defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Sergio Reguilon, Fraser Forster, Alfie Whiteman will leave once their contracts expire next month, while midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's initial loan move to Marseille will be made permanent.

Germany and former Chelsea forward Timo Werner, 29, will return to parent club RB Leipzig after his loan spell.

Ryan Mason: West Bromwich Albion in talks to appoint Tottenham coach - BBC
Description

West Bromwich Albion are in talks over appointing Tottenham Hotspur coach Ryan Mason as their manager.

Multiple sources have told BBC Sport the ex-England midfielder, who is working under Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, is emerging as the Championship club's first-choice candidate to replace Tony Mowbray, who was sacked in April.

Discussions are well under way and continuing amid positivity from all parties that Mason will accept his first managerial role.

Mason's contract at Spurs expires at the end of June so there are unlikely to be lengthy negotiations over the 33-year-old's release, though Tottenham are aware of the Baggies' interest.

If Albion want Mason to start work immediately, which is expected to be the case, the Midlands club will be required to make a formal approach to Tottenham to release him from the final weeks of his contract - but that is not expected to create any obstacles towards the deal.

Tottenham news: The stats behind Spurs' trophy-winning seasons

Tottenham news: The stats behind Spurs' trophy-winning seasons - BBC
Description

Much has been made of Tottenham's contrasting form in the Premier League and Europa League this season.

But history suggests when Spurs lift a trophy, a dip in league performance often goes hand in hand.

Since the early 1990s, Spurs have not combined a strong league season with cup success. It has typically been one or the other.

Before this season's league struggles, the last time Spurs finished in the bottom half of the Premier League was that memorable 2007-08 season with its February flourish of a League Cup final win over Chelsea.

Since then, they have racked up 16 consecutive seasons of solid to strong Premier League finishes, but without any silverware along the way.

Going further back, the 1990-91 season offers a familiar pattern. Terry Venables' FA Cup-winning side were third in the table at the end of November. However, from the FA Cup fourth round onwards, they only managed one league win in their final 15 matches.

That's worse than the one league win in 12 matches Ange Postecoglou's side recorded at the end of this season as their focus shifted to Europe.

Tottenham's season 'outstanding' but Ange Postecoglou's future remains unclear

'Weird talking about my future' - Ange on 'outstanding' season - BBC
Description

Ange Postecoglou, not for the first time this season, was rather baffled.

He had just been asked to assess Tottenham's season following the 4-1 defeat by Brighton - the side's 22nd loss in the Premier League this season.

The Australian bristled at the question, seemingly confused as to how the season could be seen as anything but a blistering success given he had guided the club to its first trophy since 2008 just five days earlier.

"How do I assess it?! Outstanding! " said Postecoglou.

"We won a trophy, which we haven't done for 17 years, and we're in the Champions League.

"Ask anyone at this football club at the start of the year if they'd take that and I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be a person in the house that wouldn't."

Having fulfilled his remit of qualifying for the Champions League and winning a trophy, the Australian bemoaned the fact that his future was still up for debate.

"I will be honest, I have been finding it really weird talking about my future when we have done something unprecedented," he said.

"I have had to answer the questions because no-one else at the club is in the position to do so, I guess."

There is only one person who can answer the questions about his future - Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Sunday's loss against Brighton saw Spurs slip to a 17th place finish, their worst ever in Premier League history.

The 38 points they accumulated is six points short of their previous worst points tally of 44, which they hit in the 1997/98 season.

In fact, Spurs lost twice as many games (22) as they won this season (11), and finished with a goal difference of -1.

Postecoglou will argue that his side was blighted by injury problems over the winter months and that the focus shifted to the Europa League once it became clear that relegation was no longer a threat.

But it is hard to get away from just how bad Tottenham's domestic campaign has been.

They have won just three league games in 2025 - against Brentford, Ipswich and Southampton.

Spurs finished the league season on a seven-game winless run, with their last victory coming against Southampton on 6 April.

Levy must now decide whether success in Europe was a true representation of Spurs' quality under Postecoglou, or whether results in the Premier League are a better indication of the side's calibre.

Tottenham vs Brighton predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game

Tottenham vs Brighton predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game - BBC
Description

The proverb 'he who laughs last, laughs longest' certainly applies to Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who has answered his critics by winning the Europa League and will be able to enjoy a party atmosphere on Sunday too.

I am delighted for Ange because some of the flak he has taken has been extraordinarily over the top. One newspaper suggested he would be known as a clown if Spurs had lost Wednesday's final, which is the kind of thing I have not read since the days when England boss Graham Taylor was compared to a turnip.

The people who write that kind of thing either do not look at Postecoglou's track record or they have been dismissive of it. Fair play to him, because he came out a few months back and talked about always winning something in his second season at a club.

He said it because it was true and also because he believed he could win a trophy this season with Spurs too and, you know what, he has gone and backed it up. There were so many people out there who were desperate for him to fail, but he has rammed that down their throats.

Postecoglou is a good guy, but people were continuously trying to poke him and provoke him in interviews. He wants to stay as Spurs boss and I hope he does but, regardless of what happens in the summer, he has proved he is a winner. He is a legendary figure at Tottenham now, and I am absolutely made up for him.

His players gave everything against Manchester United and it was a defensive masterclass. I hear a lot about how Tottenham always play the same way under Postecoglou, but that wasn't 'Ange-ball' as I know it - with their lack of possession in that game (27%), it was more like 'Ange-wall'.

I am not sure how much the Spurs players will have left in their legs for this game, especially against a Brighton team who have found a bit of form, are playing with freedom and are also looking to secure eighth place and possibly a European spot too.

That's why I am going for the Seagulls to win - but I don't think the Spurs fans will care too much about this result, and understandably so.

Sutton's prediction: 1-2
