Description

Tottenham beat Leicester in the Women's Super League thanks to two first-half goals at King Power Stadium.

Cathinka Tandberg, who joined earlier this month, poked Spurs in front from close range after a mistake by Olivia McLoughlin.

Olivia Holdt increased Tottenham's lead six minutes later, latching on to Eveliina Summanen's pass and brilliantly chipping the ball over Leicester goalkeeper Janina Leitzig.

The hosts reduced the deficit before the break when Sam Tierney tapped in at the back post from Hannah Cain's dangerous ball, but could not find an equaliser.

The result meant Tottenham returned to winning ways after a 5-1 defeat by Manchester City in their last WSL match.

Victory moved them to fourth in the table, with Leicester eighth.

Tottenham bounced back brilliantly from their first WSL defeat of the season to make this the third time they have won three of their first four games in the competition.

Martin Ho's side started brightly, pressuring their opponents and creating chances.

It took 15 minutes for them to get their reward, with their high pressing forcing Leicester into a mistake.

Janice Cayman tried to play the ball out but gave it to Jessica Naz, whose cross was poked into Tandberg by McLoughlin.

Holdt's brilliant chip ultimately secured the win for the away side, and her performance characterised Tottenham's approach to the match.

The Denmark international - making her first start since the opening day of the season - influenced the game at both ends. She scored with her only shot on target and registered a passing accuracy of 83.3% in the final third.

Holdt, meanwhile, had six passes in the final third - second only to Naz and Tandberg, who both had seven - and was named player of the match.

Leicester, who have won only one of their matches so far this season, were punished for a sloppy start.

Cain was the main bright spark for the hosts, putting dangerous crosses into the box and having a shot that looked destined for the net blocked by Clare Hunt.

But she looked to be in some discomfort after a challenge from Hunt, and was substituted in the 73rd minute.

Tottenham 1-1 Wolves: What Frank said - BBC
Description

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's always nice to get an equaliser and get something out of a hard-fought game.

"First half was good. We got into a lot of dangerous positions. We were clearly on top and in control.

"Second half we started fine but after the goal we lost control and our structure. We were not cool enough.

"The effort and mentality from the players was very good. In the end we got that goal.

"The classic thing of rushng it a bit and Wolves changed their system. It changed our positions a bit and adapting to that and then the goals and the emotion of it we gave simple passes away.

"We kept going.

"Top composure from Joao [Palhinha]. Great finish. We needed something special and we got that.

"I think the foundation is in a good place. Defending well. Working hard, running hard. The offensive part of it is the thing we have to add layers to. I'd have loved us to do more today. That's part of the development."

Post

Leicester 1-2 Tottenham

Sarir Kees has an effort blocked and Leicester have yet another corner.

They've thrown everything they can at Spurs in the second half.

Post

Man City 2-1 London City Lionesses

There has now been a penalty awarded in all four of LCL's games this season - and in the last three matches, they have been given against the Lionesses.

It is an issue manager Jocelyn Precheur will have to solve this season, they can't afford to give away chances to their opponents.

Post

Liverpool 0-2 Man Utd

Liverpool are producing some decent moves in the final third but there's nothing at the end of any of them.

They've created just 0.24 expected goals.

GOAL - Man City 3-1 London City Lionesses

Khadija Shaw (pen, 69 mins)

Shaw sends the keeper the wrong way, and tucks her penalty into the bottom left corner.

Lionesses have an uphill task in the final 20 minutes.

Post

Leicester 1-2 Tottenham

Cathinka Tandberg comes close to a third for Tottenham.

Amanda Nilden chips a good cross towards the back post but the forward can't keep the ball down as she heads towards goal.

'Riviere did her job'

Liverpool 0-2 Man Utd

Abbie McManus

Former Manchester United defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at St Helens Stadium

You've got to protect your players. Jayde Riviere has had her injury problems, so I think that's smart from Marc Skinner to take her off. She's done her job for 66 minutes.

CLOSE!

Man City 2-1 London City Lionesses

Kerstin Casperij has caused London City problems with her runs from full back all day, and she nearly scores as an attempted cross to the far post almost flies into the net.

Elene Lete was scrambling and glad to see the ball fly narrowly wide of the far post.

Post

Liverpool 0-2 Man Utd

Ceri Holland looks to catch out Phallon Tullis-Joyce but there's no issue for the United goalkeeper.

The cross goes over the top of the net.

Post

Man City 2-1 London City Lionesses

Man City have had the better of the second half but are yet to find a crucial third goal.

As Arsenal proved yesterday, a one-goal lead is never totally safe.

'Unlucky Liverpool'

Liverpool 0-2 Man Utd

Abbie McManus

Former Manchester United defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at St Helens Stadium

Jayde Riviere had no idea that Cornelia Kapocs was on her shoulder there but it was a great recovery tackle from her.

Liverpool were unlucky there.

Post

Liverpool 0-2 Man Utd

What a chance for Liverpool! Cornelia Kapocs is one-on-one but can't hit the target, firing just wide of the near post.

She thinks she's been fouled by Jayde Riviere but the referee doesn't agree.

Tottenham 1-1 Wolves: Joao Palhinha saves day for Spurs - BBC
Description

With Liverpool losing their first game of the season earlier on Saturday, Spurs had the chance to move up to second in the table and close the gap on the league leaders.

Playing against a side who had taken just one point from the last 27 available, the opportunity was there for the taking.

Thomas Frank's side often looked too predictable going forward as their countless crosses into the box were easily dealt with by Sam Johnstone.

Perhaps Mohammed Kudus could have done better with his header from close range, which was tipped onto the crossbar by the Wolves keeper, while Lucas Bergvall should have at least forced a save when he had clear sight on goal in the first half.

The hosts appeared to lack spirit after going behind as they were sloppy in possession and struggled to create anything worthwhile in front of goal.

But a moment of brilliance from Joao Palhinha saved the day to keep Tottenham third in the Premier League, just four points behind Liverpool.

Only Liverpool (7) have scored more second half goals in the Premier League than Tottenham (6) this season, while Spurs are the only side yet to concede after half-time.

Wolves have been trailing at half-time in each of their last nine Premier League games – no team has ever gone into the interval behind in 10 consecutive matches before.

Tottenham have scored 10 goals from an xG of 6.1 in the Premier League this season – only Liverpool (11 goals, 7 xG) have overperformed their expected goals more than Spurs (3.9).

All three of Mohammed Kudus’ Premier League assists for Tottenham Hotspur this season have been for Richarlison. It’s the most any player has assisted another so far this term, while only Jack Grealish (4) has more assists overall.

Luton school congratulates Luca Williams-Barnett on Spurs debut - BBC
Description

A school has sent congratulations to a 16-year-old former pupil who has made his debut for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in the last few minutes of a match.

Luca Williams-Barnett, who will turn 17 next month, came on as a substitute in the 87th minute of the League Cup third round match against Doncaster Rovers in London on Wednesday.

His former school, Lealands High School in Luton, posted on Facebook to say: "Huge congratulations to our former student, Luca! From taking your GCSEs in the Summer to making your senior debut for Tottenham Hotspur."

Spurs won the match 3-0.

The attacking midfielder joined Spurs under-10s, having previously played for hometown club Luton Town.

On its website, Spurs said Williams-Barnett "made his debut for our Under-18s as a 15-year-old during the 2023-24 season and shone at that level throughout the following campaign, memorably scoring long-range goals against West Ham, Leicester City and Aston Villa".

The Leicester strike earned him the "Under-18 Premier League Goal of the Season – while also netting a hat-trick in our Under-17 Premier League Cup final success against Charlton Athletic".

Tottenham news: Analysis - 'Spurs viewed as a club that is purchasable'

'Spurs viewed as a club that is purchasable' - BBC
Description

The announcement by the Tottenham board is viewed by individuals close to the matter as largely a formality.

Market regulations require formal statements following speculation of such potential buyouts.

It has been claimed to BBC Sport that Brooklyn Earick was approached to issue the statement to the London Stock Exchange following a report in a national newspaper that claimed he was spearheading a takeover bid.

However, it was eventually left to Tottenham and Enic to publicly address the speculation, despite the fact Earick has been posting on social media about the reported takeover bid on Friday morning.

The seriousness of Earick's advances will become much clearer in the coming weeks. But what is clear is Spurs is viewed as a club that is purchasable.

Of course, the key catalyst of the recent flurry of interest from parties interested in taking over at Tottenham is the departure of long-serving executive chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy's exit has been taken by some as a clear sign that the Lewis family, who ultimately own the club, are preparing to sell.

However, the soundings - publicly and privately - are in complete contrast to the belief from some industry figures that the club is on the market.

The Lewis family are maintaining that Tottenham is simply not for sale. But that isn't preventing groups from testing the water.

Indeed, in addition to Earick's interest, a consortium involving Amanda Staveley has been among a number of parties not to have been dissuaded from pursuing a Spurs buyout despite the Lewis' family's stance.

If Earick is serious, then we may be about to find out how staunch the Lewis family are about leading Tottenham into the post-Levy era.

Tottenham reject buyout interest from third consortium led by US tech entrepreneur

Tottenham reject buyout interest from third consortium led by US tech entrepreneur - BBC
Description

Tottenham have "unequivocally rejected" an informal expression of interest from a consortium led by American tech entrepreneur Brooklyn Earick.

It is the third expression of interest rejected by the club's board since the sudden departure of executive chairman Daniel Levy earlier this month.

In a statement, Enic Sports & Developments Holdings Ltd - which has an almost 87% stake in Tottenham - said it wanted to "reconfirm that Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale and Enic is not looking to sell its stake in the club".

Earick has fuelled speculation by posting an image of the dressing room at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on social media, including a timer counting down the 27 days to 24 October.

UK takeover and merger rules dictate that, having had an expression of interest rejected, Earick's consortium must make an offer by that date or announce he is not intending to do so.

Earick is a former DJ who also worked in spacecraft research for NASA before founding Redacted RnD, which focuses on technology, media, sport and entertainment.

The family of UK businessman Joe Lewis own the majority of Enic, while about 30% is held by Levy and his family.

A source close to the Lewis family also reiterated that the club is not for sale and said "this unsolicited and unnecessary interest does nothing to change the family's resolve and commitment to do whatever it takes to drive success on the pitch".

On 8 September, the club rejected approaches from former Newcastle United shareholder Amanda Staveley's PCP International Finance Limited and a consortium led by Dr Roger Kennedy and Wing-Fai Ng through Firehawk Holdings Limited.

Levy was the Premier League's longest-serving chairman and is estimated to have earned more than £50m ($67.5m) during his almost quarter of a century in the role.

But he was also the target of regular protests by Spurs fans, especially last season.

The north London club won their first trophy in 16 years when they beat Manchester United in May's Europa League final.

Today's announcement by the Tottenham board is viewed by individuals close to the matter as largely a formality.
