Liverpool have put an end to their concerning run of form on the pitch but they are still in need of strengthening their squad in 2026.

These early stages of the season have exposed weaknesses within Arne Slot’s team and they are already considering potential new recruits for January.

One particular area of concern is Liverpool’s defence and signing a new centre-back has become a priority at Anfield.

Liverpool ‘keeping tabs’ on centre-back transfer target

According to TBR Football, Liverpool are ‘keeping close tabs’ on Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis, along with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The 21-year-old has been attracting attention from a number of leagues recently and Spurs in particular are eyeing a potential January move.

Wolfsburg have a track record of selling impressive centre-backs to Premier League clubs. Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix both moved to England from Wolfsburg in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Now, Koulierakis looks like he could be the next in line, as interest builds ahead of the new year.

“Koulierakis is attracting a lot of attention across Europe, composed and left-sided – left-footed defenders do tend to carry a bit more of a premium and he is standing out at the moment,” TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey said.

Liverpool are especially keen on bringing in young but reliable central defenders next year. Virgil van Dijk turns 35 in July and his contract is due to expire in 2027. Ibrahima Konate will become a free agent at the end of the season if he cannot reach a new agreement with Liverpool, while Joe Gomez came close to leaving the Reds for AC Milan over the summer.

With new signing Giovanni Leoni also out with an ACL injury, Liverpool’s list of natural centre-backs are depleting and they are in serious need of reinforcements.

Will Ibrahima Konate leave Liverpool next year?

Konate’s contact saga continues to encourage speculation over his future. The France international was once a priority for Liverpool when it came to contract talks but discussions with Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk took centre stage instead.

Since then, discussions with Konate have come to a grinding halt and a report from Spanish outlet Marca in September claimed he has now rejected three new contract proposals from Liverpool.

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the defender’s position at Anfield, confirming he remains a target for Real Madrid next year. The Spanish giants are keen on signing a central defender on a free transfer.

“If Konate will go on a free next summer then Real Madrid will be very attentive to the situation. On the other side, Liverpool are still talking to his agents,” the transfer expert said on his YouTube channel.

“The Reds at this stage have the opportunity to still talk to the player. But Konate has the opportunity to decide whether he wants to stay at Liverpool are try a new chapter. There is a lot of interest in the player, not just Real Madrid.”

Everton’s unbeaten start to life at The Hill Dickinson stadium came to a thudding halt at the weekend when they were beaten 3-0 at home by European hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur.

The game proved to be a tale of three headers as defender Micky van de Ven scored twice from set pieces before midfielder Pape Matar Sarr capped off the win for Thomas Frank’s side with a header of his own.

The result saw Tottenham get catapulted up to third in the table after a commanding start to life under their new manager, while Everton dropped down to 14th in the table in what ultimately proved to be an afternoon to forget.

The Lillywhites were good value for their victory on Merseyside but the game could very easily have panned out differently if it wasn’t for a controversial refereeing decision.

Keith Hackett shares scathing reaction to disallowed Everton goal

Former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official, Keith Hackett believes VAR shouldn’t have intervened in a potentially game-changing goal for Everton.

The incident took place in the opening half an hour, just minutes before Micky van de Ven’s opener when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall whipped in a pinpoint ball to the front post which was nodded in by the towering Jake O’Brien.

On the field, the goal was awarded in Everton’s favour but just as the former Lyon defender headed off to celebrate VAR flagged the strike for offside with both Iliman N’Diaye and Jack Grealish appearing to interfere with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and his line of vision.

“[It was] disappointing to see the Everton goal ruled out,” said Hackett via Football Insider. Craig Pawson in a good position, awards the goal. Sadly, we then have VAR Stewart Attwell, once again, coming in and indicating to the referee that he should go to the monitor.”

Hackett goes on to explain that he feels Vicario exaggerated the amount of contact he receives from the Everton player. He added: “There is a slight nudge but when we see the amount of grappling that goes on inside the penalty area going unpunished, this is minimal. This goalkeeper is not going to save this goal. So, the indication is that two Everton players are in an offside position, they were. But, they’re behind the goalkeeper, not in front of him. The line of sight is clear, they have not interfered with the opponent. This goal should’ve stood.”

David Moyes shares clear verdict on disallowed goal

Everton boss David Moyes says that the referee was correct to disallow Jake O’Brien’s goal, conceding that he would have been frustrated as an opposing manager if the goal was allowed to stand.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle: “Since I have seen it, I agree it was offside. If it had been the other way around, I would be claiming it was an offside goal, so I think they got it right.”

Everton have a week to prepare for their next match as they gear up for a massive away match against the season’s surprise package Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. It’s the first meeting between the two teams since a 2-0 win against the Black Cats in 2017 when Moyes was in the opposing dugout. Romelu Lukaku and Idrissa Gueye were the goalscorers in that encounter.

Tim Sherwood believes that Everton’s strikers are ‘not good enough’ and hindering the rest of the attack.

The Toffees fell to a 3-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur as their unbeaten start at Hill Dickinson Stadium came to an end. But within the opening three minutes, Everton spurned a golden chance when Iliman Ndiaye crossed for Beto, but he failed to make proper contact.

Micky van de Ven scored from two Spurs corners before half-time and Pape Matar Sarr rounded off the visitors’ victory with a minute remaining.

Beto was again selected to spearhead the attack, having also squandered a golden chance in the 2-0 loss at Manchester City. The former Udinese striker has bagged just one Premier League goal this season. And despite being purchased for up to £27 million from Villarreal in the summer transfer window, Thierno Barry been down the pecking order and did not make an impact when coming off the bench against Spurs.

What’s been said

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Sherwood admitted the duo are struggling to meet the standards Everton require. The former Spurs manager said: “Sometimes, you can protect strikers and say they are not getting the chances. But they are putting so many crosses into the box. They cross the ball more than most teams from left side to right side. The quality of the crosses might not always be fantastic but Beto is too isolated when he’s in the box.

“Whether it’s Barry or not, it’s too isolated when he’s there. He is very reluctant to play both of them because they’re not good enough. The bottom line is they’re not good enough and are showing they are not good enough. He is trying to help them out and find the solution as best as he can, David Moyes. They have got very good players; [Kiernan] Dewsbury-Hall is great, Jack Grealish we know, Ndiaye is a little superstar but they have got no focal point. They have got no-one to play off or make runs off.

“They have got a nucleus of a decent side. They are solid at the back, a very good goalkeeper but they need a centre-forward but everyone is looking for the same thing so it’s difficult to go and find that. And why would someone of the quality go to Everton rather than somewhere else because there are a lot of teams looking for centre-forwards, including Spurs I’d suggest.”

David Moyes gives verdict on Everton loss

On Everton’s performance against Spurs, manager Moyes said: “I don't think that we deserved to lose 3-0 but if you don't defend set pieces well enough, then you're always liable to lose the game. It's not something that's been a big problem with us but it was today, whether that was because of the quality Spurs had or whether it was down to how poor we were defending it, then that could be argued.

“Some good things and, obviously, I'm annoyed because we don't defend our set pieces as poorly as that normally, so we'll need to try to improve on it. We've been pretty good at it. Overall, the play was good enough to earn more than we did today, we've just got to try to tighten up and finish off some of the good play and the chances we have.”

Thomas Frank toasted Tottenham Hotspur’s victory that ended Everton’s unbeaten start at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees’ unbeaten run at their new home since moving from Goodison Park was curtailed following a 3-0 defeat by Spurs. David Moyes’ side were undone by two set-pieces in the first half, with Micky van de Ven scoring both from corners. Everton had their own effort from a set-piece ruled out by VAR after Jake O’Brien nodded home.

And in the closing stages, Tottenham wrapped up three points when Pape Matar Sarr bagged with one minute of normal time remaining.

The north London side moved up to third in the table, while Everton remain 14th and slipped to successive league defeats. On the game, Spurs boss Frank said: “I think overall a very solid performance, especially pleased with the first half. I think we were good in phase one, good in phase two, more passes, control of the game more in phases, in general, The second half was a little bit more of a dogfight at times. Going here to Everton, which is against a very good team, well set up by David Moyes and a very good home crowd, they've been unbeaten here so far. To go to any ground in the Premier League, to win 3-0 away from home is a very good result. So, yes, very happy, happy with obviously the set pieces as well.

“That gives you an ability to perform at a certain level where you want to always do a little bit more, but be really, how can you say, competitive and especially away from home. Then I think we are, is it three years ago we played Champions League, or three years ago? It's still quite an inexperienced Champions League squad to go every third or fourth day. One of the most difficult things with that is to be able to compete in both tournaments and especially after an away trip in Champions League and then go away in the Premier League again. So, to/ keep the energy, the focus, the intensity to be able to do that, I'm very pleased with the players, how they handled that to get the win today. Plus, we also did it after Bodo, travel, then travel to Leeds and win. So, I think it shows a lot about that mentality. There's things we like to work on, but the most important thing is the mentality."

David Moyes had no complaints about Everton’s disallowed goal in their defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

The Toffees were beaten at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time as they fell to a 3-0 loss at the hands of the north London side. Spurs took the lead in the 19th minute through Micky van de Ven’s header.

Everton thought they equalised five minutes later when Jake O’Brien nodded home from a corner. However, a VAR review deemed that Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish were interfering with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and the goal was disallowed by on-field referee Craig Pawson.

Van de Ven doubled the visitors’ advantage from another corner in first-half stoppage-time and Pape Matar Sarr put the game to rest in the 89th minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moyes said: "I've seen it and I think it was the right decision. It wasn't a goal. In the end, it was the right decision. The position Ndiaye took up with the goalkeeper. If it happened to me, I wouldn't be happy

"We don't need to react in any big fashion. We played a good Tottenham team. They're in the Champions League. We've moved from the stadium, the position we were in needed to improve. First defeat at the stadium since we moved here.”

On the performance overall, which condemned Everton to successive Premier League defeats, Moyes added: “We were undone. Really disappointed. We don't concede a lot from corners and I have to praise Tottenham. Thomas Frank works a lot on it.

"We played well today. We had as much of the game as Tottenham and probably as many chances. We got undone with set pieces and that's what happened. We need to be more clinical and a bit more creative with how we can make better chances. We had enough opportunities, but couldn't get it. We can't change the players we've got, so we'll keep practicing. The goals will come.”

Everton captain James Tarkowski agreed that O’Brien’s header being chalked off was correct. The centre-back said: "To me, if that was given against us, I would be disappointed. It’s a bit subjective but from what I have seen it was probably offside."

Everton suffered their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium as they slipped to a 3-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur.

David Moyes’ side were undone by two Spurs set-pieces in the first half finished off by Micky van de Ven before substitute Pape Matar Sarr struck late to condemn the Toffees to successive losses in the Premier League.

Everton did have several chances of their own, including an opportunity to lead inside the third minute, as well as having an equaliser netted by Jake O’Brien ruled out by VAR.

Match report

Everton created a gilt-edged chance to break the deadlock in the third minute when Iliman Ndiaye crossed from the byline but Beto failed to make proper contact from close range before Jack Grealish’s follow-up was blocked by Pedro Porro.

And with their first opportunity, Spurs opened the scoring in the 19th minute when a corner was headed back across goal and Micky van de Ven nodded beyond Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Everton thought they had equalised six minutes later through a corner of their own that was met by a powerful Jake O’Brien header. However, after a VAR review it was adjudged that Ndiaye and Grealish were interfering with Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario and the goal was ruled out.

Moyes’ men were the better team on the whole but they fell behind from another corner, with Van de Ven heading home with aplomb in stoppage-time.

The Blues got on the front foot after the break and Beto thought he netted with a bicycle kick but Vicario produced a fine save. The Tottenham stopper also kept out an effort from the lively Ndiaye, who earlier sent an improvised flick narrowly off target.

And as Everton pushed to get back into the game, they left the door open for Tottenham to put the game to rest. Former Blues favourite Richarlison headed into the path of Sarr, who kept his composure to finish.

That led to supporters leaving Hill Dickinson Stadium in their droves as they watched their team fall to defeat for the first time since the move from Goodison Park.

Everton player ratings vs Tottenham

Jordan Pickford - 5.5

Could do little about the opener but perhaps might have been a bit stronger to shrug off Van de Ven for the second. Madea decent stop from Richarlison but left helpless for Spurs’ third.

Jake O’Brien - 5

Headed home well for his disallowed goal but didn’t offer much else going forward in the first half. Subbed in the 66th minute.

James Tarkowski - 5

Generally sound in the first half but couldn’t marshal Everton duly from set-pieces. Almost gifted Richarlison a break with a meek header.

Michael Keane - 6

Made a decent early tackle on Mohammed Kudus and did fine bar bar not being part of the defence to keep out Van de Ven’s goals.

Vitalii Mykolenko - 4

Lacked so much quality going forward and was skinned twice in the first half. Lacked quality after the break as he was pushed into higher positions and performance was summed up by a tame long-range shot that took a deflection.

James Garner - 6

Forced a decent save out of Vicario in the first half and kept things ticking. Delivered a couple of decent crosses early in the second period before being switched to right-back - and lost Richarlison for Spurs’ third goal.

Idrissa Gana Gueye - 6

Did OK but gave away a couple of silly fouls in the first half. Had a goalbound effort blocked in the second period and showed energy, but had much better games.

Iliman Ndiaye - 7

Ran Spurs ragged in the first half. Should have had an assist but for Beto’s poor finishing. Stood up the cross for Beto’s effort in the second half and then had a deflected shot of his own well kept out. Everton’s best player as he displayed his magic again.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - 5

Whipped in the corner for O’Brien’s disallowed goals and had his moments in the first half without making a real impact.Similar in the second period.

Jack Grealish - 6

Went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock but was otherwise restricted for much of the first half. Had more joy in the second period without really landing a blow to Spurs.

Beto - 4

Had to score his early chance which would have changed the game. Did everything right with his bicycle kick that was saved, to his credit, before being subbed in the 66th minute.

Sub 1 - Thierno Barry (replaced Beto) - 5

Had one effort deflected over.

Sub 2 - Merlin Rohl (replaced O’Brien) - 5

May be disappointed he headed a chance over.

Sub 3 - Charly Alcaraz (replaced Gueye) - N/A

Thomas Frank has revealed that two key Tottenham Hotspur players need further assessment ahead of their clash against Everton.

The Toffees welcome Spurs to Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday (16.30 BST). Everton are unbeaten at their new ground and although they were beaten 2-0 at Manchester City last weekend, David Moyes’ troops will fancy their chances of getting a result against Tottenham.

The North London side, who lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in their previous game, are in Champions League action against AS Monaco tonight. However, they head into the encounter without Cristian Romero. The centre-back was due to start against Villa but suffered an adductor issue in the warm-up and his problem is still being assessed.

Tottenham boss Frank said: “It’s an adductor strain. We will assess it more this week before we come with any time frame. Obviously he’s a very important player for us and for me it’s just doing a job, defending first and foremost and trying to replace him as best I can. I think it was an OK game, unfortunately we didn’t get the result we wanted to, but the aim is to win here tomorrow.””

Romero has endured several fitness problems in recent seasons but Frank insists he is not concerned. “I don’t think so,” added Frank. “For me, it is an adductor strain. We will assess him this week and then we’ll know more.”

Tottenham also head into the Monaco game without Destiny Udogie. The full-back was missing against Villa, having sustained a knee problem while representing Italy during the international break.

Frank said: “The latest is that we got that knee irritation after international duty that we are assessing and working very hard to get on top of. We will know more probably day by day or next week.”

Should Romero and Udogie be absent, Tottenham will have depleted defensive options against Everton. Spurs have confirmed that the versatile Ben Davies is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury while Radu Dragusin is still recovering from an ACL injury and summer signing Kota Takai is sidelined.

They also have confirms in the final third with James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski (both knee) and Dominic Solanke (ankle) absent as well as midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Everton, meanwhile, will continue to be without Jarrad Branthwaite for a prolonged period. The centre-half has yet to play this season because of a hamstring injury. Complications in his recovery meant that Branthwaite underwent surgery earlier this week.

Nathan Patterson was the only other senior player who missed the Man City loss because of injury. Jack Grealish was ineligible to face his parent club but will return to the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur have two new injury concerns as they next prepare to face Everton.

Spurs slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday. The North London side led through Rodrigo Bentancur inside five minutes but Morgan Rogers equalised for the visitors before half-time and Emi Buendia bagged Villa’s winner in the 77th minute.

Tottenham now turn their attention to a clash against AS Monaco in the Champions League before they face Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. And Spurs could be sweating on two key men.

Romero and Udogie concerns

Cristian Romero pulled out of the Villa game, having sustained an issue in the warm-up, having been named in the starting line-up. Spurs boss Thomas Frank believes that the centre-back’s adductor issue is not too serious but is unsure if Romero can play against Monaco. Frank said: "Minor adductor injury. He felt a little bit the past few days. We expected him to be fine but he wasn't. I don't think it is too big."

Meanwhile, Destiny Udogie was not in Tottenham’s match-day squad. The full-back picked up a problem representing Italy during the international break and a timeframe on when he could return was not given. "Came back from international duties and minor irritation on the knee," said the Spurs boss. "Nothing major.”

Tottenham injury news

Tottenham could be without a total of eight players against Everton. Versatile defender Ben Davies also missed the Villa defeat, having suffered an injury during Wales’ 4-2 defeat by Belgium during the international break.

Spurs are already without first-choice striker Dominic Solanke, who underwent ankle surgery last month. Frank has insisted that he will not rush Solanke back to full fitness. Fellow forward Dejan Kulusevski has not played since Tottenham won the Europa League last season with victory over Manchester United in the final. Kulusevski underwent knee surgery.

James Maddison is unlikely to play this campaign, having ruptured his ACL in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United.

Yves Bissouma is sidelined for the next few weeks having been stretchered off the Mali during the international break. The midfielder hasn’t played for Spurs this season, having been left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup for disciplinary reasons.

Kota Takai is still to make his debut for Tottenham since joining from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale in the summer. Takai has returned to training, though, so could be back in the squad against Everton although a decision will have to be made. Radu Dragusin is coming towards the end of his recovery from an ACL injury.

Everton will head into the Spurs game after a 2-0 loss to Manchester City. David Moyes may be hopeful that Jarrad Branthwaite could be back in the squad. The key centre-back sustained a hamstring injury in pre-season and has not been rushed back, although he has returned to training.

Nathan Patterson missed the City defeat because of a setback. The right-back has yet to make a first-team appearance this season.

Liverpool made it three wins from three in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon with a narrow victory over title rivals Arsenal at Anfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a stunning free-kick with seven minutes of normal time remaining as he lashed in the dead-ball in front of The Kop to become the first player to score past the Gunners this campaign.

There had been concerns over the Reds’ defensive capabilities after they conceded twice against Crystal Palace (in the Community Shield), Bournemouth and 10-man Newcastle United. However, they shut out Mikel Arteta’s side.

Joe Gomez came on after an injury to Ibrahima Konate and the Reds veteran showed his defensive prowess with some strong clearances to preserve the clean sheet. Ahead of the game, Liverpool had been linked with a move for Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi with a £35m offer made.

Guehi started for the Eagles as they won at Aston Villa on Sunday evening. He also scored a stunning goal as the London side won 3-0 in Birmingham. The player does not plan to sign a new deal with the club and is available on a free transfer next summer. However, it remains to be seen what happens in the final days of the window.

Oliver Glasner has concerns over replacing Guehi

Speaking to the media after his side’s dominant win over Villa, Eagles boss Oliver Glasner was adamant about his desire to keep Guehi.

He said: "Of course, I have mentioned it so often [about wanting to keep Marc Guehi]. We have to. Again, it is if we want a successful season. We have had a fantastic start.

"We had a great start, so it is just the start. The first step is made and for a successful season we need Marc. It is not possible to find a replacement in one day.

"This is our captain. We have to keep him. I told this to the chairman [Steve Parish].

"I like Marc, he is such a professional player and such a nice guy. It is for the future of Crystal Palace. We have to keep him.

"We don't have the right replacement, so for me, it is clear that we keep him."

One player who could be seen as an ideal replacement for Guehi is Manchester City ace Manuel Akanji but reports in Italy claim it is Tottenham Hotspur who are leading the chase.

Tottenham lead chase for Manuel Akanji amid Crystal Palace interest

According to Gazetta Dello Sport, Palace, Spurs and AC Milan are all interested in Akanji. Galatasaray had previously been linked but are now said to be out of the running.

AC Milan have no issues meeting Man City’s demands but are set to struggle in their attempts to convince Akanji due to the player’s wage demands and his desire to play in the Champions League. The report said: “The Rossoneri also have to contend with Akanji's desire to play in the Champions League. From this perspective, Tottenham are ahead of the Rossoneri. Crystal Palace are in third place.”

The news that Palace are third in the running with Spurs leading the chase could spell bad news for Liverpool. Glasner appears determined to keep hold of Guehi, especially if he cannot sign an adequate replacement. The interest from Spurs and AC Milan will hurt the Reds’ pursuit of Guehi unless Palace can find an alternative in time.

Liverpool have ruled out the possibility of Joe Gomez heading to Selhurst Park in a potential swap.

Everton started life at Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion last time out. Iliman Ndiaye and James Garner got their goals against the Seagulls. Jordan Pickford also saved a Danny Welbeck penalty in the second half.

The Toffees still have the chance to sign some more players before the end of the transfer window. They also have the opportunity to let some individuals leave as well. The deadline is on Monday 1st September at 7pm.

Everton eye West Ham star Lucas Paqueta

According to the Daily Mail, Everton are interested in West Ham ace Lucas Paqueta. Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are also said to be keen on the player. The report adds that he has attention from Saudi Arabia as well in his services.

The Toffees are also said to have had a bid rejected by the Hammers for Tomas Soucek as they hunt for reinforcements, as per reporter Jacob Steinberg on X. Moyes is keen to add more bodies to his squad before the market closes. His team have three points on the board from their first two league fixtures.

Paqueta, 27, has been with West Ham since joining them back in 2022. He has since become one of their most prized assets. However, they could now face a battle to keep hold of him.

The Brazil international, who has 55 caps to his name, has made 122 appearances in all competitions and has scored 19 goals, five of which came in the last campaign. He has also had spells in the past at Flamengo, AC Milan and Lyon. The Rio-born man is now facing an uncertain long-term future at the London Stadium.

Would Lucas Paqueta suit Everton?

Everton could see Paqueta as someone to boost their midfield department. If he joined them, he would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. He would also inject some valuable quality into their ranks and something different to what they have at their disposal already.

Moyes said in late July that he wanted some more bodies: "We've got huge priorities as far as where we would like to try and buy the players if we could do. But also, we've got a numbers situation as well, we're short in numbers, so there's a bit of both. We're trying to get the pieces we really want first, and that's what we've been fighting to do. So hopefully we can, hopefully things will fall into place.

"But we're just beginning to think, my goodness, we're just not getting enough over the line. Because we are actively working to try [and] it's not as if we're a club who are saying [that] we're waiting to sell a player before we can bring one in. But it's not really the situation. We've probably had since the last game of the season, and I don't know what, five weeks, six weeks, certainly, probably more than that. So we've got to start getting moving on, because it won't be long until [it] starts to become a bit close to the end of the window."
