The newly-promoted Clarets begin their season with a tricky trip to Europa League winners Tottenham on Saturday.

Now under the management of Thomas Frank, Spurs experienced a bizarre campaign last time out – lifting a long-awaited piece of silverware despite finishing 17th in the Premier League.

That was enough for Ange Postecoglou to lose his job, after losing 22 times in the league.

Arriving from Brentford, Frank will see this weekend as a great chance to get his Tottenham spell off to a positive start – although Burnley will obviously have other ideas.

Ahead of the start of the Premier League season, The Overlap panel have been giving their Super 6 predictions for some of this weekend’s season openers. Among them was Burnley’s trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The team of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher went for a 2-0 home win, while ex-Arsenal man Ian Wright predicted a 3-1 win for Spurs for his team, which also consists of Roy Keane and Jill Scott.

Keane, however, offered a completely contrary view.

"Scott Parker, ex Spurs lad,” he commented.

"They’ve got the Super Cup as well [in midweek]. When does this game take place, on Saturday? PSG will have run them ragged, they’ve got the flight back.

"Burnley are getting a result against Spurs.”

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly hoping to add an England international to their ranks ahead of their home game with Burnley on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The Clarets have been handed a tough-looking trip to North London on their return to the top flight as manager Scott Parker prepares for face his former club on the first Saturday of the new campaign. A number of new additions are in contention to make their Burnley debuts after Parker enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer market following last season’s successful push for promotion from the Championship.

But the same can be said of their hosts as new Spurs manager Thomas Frank completed the permanent signings of former loan stars Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, the loan addition of midfielder Joao Palhinha and captured Mohammed Kudus from Premier League rivals West Ham United. However, further business is said to be on the agenda for the former Brentford head coach and a move for England star Conor Gallagher is said to be under consideration as further doubt has been cast over his future at Atletico Madrid.

There would be some surprise if the former Chelsea midfielder was allowed to depart the La Liga giants this summer after he received a major endorsement from Atleti manager Diego Simeone towards the end of last season as he reflected on the impact Gallagher had made on his side.

Speaking ahead of a 4-2 home win against Real Valladolid in April, the former Argentina international said: "When we think of him (Gallagher) we think of his youth, energy and intensity in the game. He also strikes the ball very well. It's never easy for players coming from England to adapt to the Spanish championship, to the language. He has competed very well in different places and in positions where he doesn't feel more comfortable. He will evolve, he has room for growth. He is very intense in offensive and defensive play, he brings a lot to us."

Considering

However, reports throughout the summer have suggested Gallagher could be sold as he has fallen behind Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios in the pecking order at the Metropolitano. The England midfielder is believed to have been offered to a number of Premier League clubs when the summer transfer window opened in June and the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are all said to have shown an interest in securing his services.

A more recent report from Football Espana have suggested Atleti are ‘still looking for an exit’ for Gallagher and described the midfielder as ‘not prominent in Simeone’s plans’ ahead of the new season. The report goes on to state Spurs are now ‘the most likely destination’ for the former Chelsea man and are considering an offer after they completed the signing of Portugal international Palhinha.

Scott Parker’s side travel to North London in just two weeks’ time to take on Tottenham, who are now under the management of ex-Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

A dreadful league campaign for Spurs ended on a high note as Ange Postecoglou led them to Europa League glory, securing a Champions League place for the forthcoming season.

Despite guiding Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years, Postecoglou still faced the axed after losing 22 league games and finishing 17th.

Spurs have inevitably strengthened their squad this summer with their European riches, turning Mathys Tel's loan move from Bayern Munich permanent as well as forking out £55m to prize Mohammed Kudus from West Ham.

Frank’s side also looked to tempt Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest, but the England international has since signed a new deal.

Spurs are now reportedly close to securing another deal, with former Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha set to make the move from Vincent Kompany’s Bayern.

The 30-year-old only made a £47m move to the Bundesliga giants last summer, but struggled for game time in his debut season, making just six starts.

It’s claimed Spurs will look to strike an initial loan deal for the Portuguese international, although there could also be an option to make the move permanent.

Burnley and Spurs meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, August 16.

Tottenham Hotspur have already enjoyed a productive summer transfer window as they set their focus on their clash with Burnley on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

After securing promotion as Championship runners-up, Scott Parker will take his current employers to face his former club at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what will be an immediate test of the Clarets’ top flight credentials. With new manager Thomas Frank in the home dugout for the first time in a competitive fixture, Spurs could name new signing Mohammed Kudus in their starting eleven and former loan signings Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel could also feature after making permanent moves to North London this summer.

Spurs continue to press forwards in their bid to improve Frank’s squad ahead of the big kick-off and recent reports have suggested Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher is one their list of targets - despite his comments enthusing over what could lie ahead during his second year with the La Liga giants.

Speaking to TransferMarkt last month, the England star said: “It’s been good because I had the opportunity to play for such an amazing club. It’s brilliant. I want to help as much as I can. Hopefully, I can play more than I did the first year. I just need to keep working hard. I’ve learned so much, and I’m really excited to carry on learning and improving to help the club.”

Options

Despite Gallagher’s insistence he is looking forward to a second season working under the watch of Diego Simeone, there have been reports suggesting the former Crystal Palace loan star could be sold as Atleti’s summer transfer business could see them fall foul of La Liga’s regulations on non-EU players. The 11-time Spanish champions have made six signings since the end of last season with the likes of Brazilian attacking midfielder Thiago Almada, United States international Johnny Cardoso and Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso all added to Simeone’s ranks.

However, the reports of the possible sale of Gallagher back to a Premier League club appear to be misguided as the England international possesses an Irish passport and that means he would not be taken into account when it comes to Atleti’s non-EU quota. That has not stopped speculation linking the former Chelsea man with a move to the likes of Newcastle United and Aston Villa - but it is Burnley’s opening day opponents that are said to be progressing with a deal after it was reported Spurs have been in contact with the midfielder.

Journalist Graeme Bailey told TBR Football: “Gallagher at this point is happy at Madrid, very happy, he has thoroughly enjoyed working with Simeone and feels he made the right choice in moving. He does have the England situation in the back of his mind, I am told, and feelers have been put out by intermediaries to check on his potential options, but as said, ideally he stays put.”

Burnley have confirmed one of their brightest prospects has put pen-to-paper on his first professional contract after impressing in recent months.

Midfielder Oli Pimlott has stepped up from Under-18 to Under-21 level over the last 12 months and has caught the eye of academy coaching staff during that time. After featuring in the Clarets run to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup in 2024, Pimlott stepped into the Under-21s last season and his progression has now been rewarded with a two-year professional contract.

After securing his new deal, the youngster told the club website: “I’m over the moon. I’ve worked hard ever since I joined and it’s an honour to be given a professional contract. The coaches, staff and players are great and there’s a good bond within the squad. I love it here and I’m really happy. Over the last few months I settled into the U21s group quite well, and I feel comfortable at that level. I work hard on and off the pitch and hopefully I can continue to improve next season.”

Spurs plot move for Premier League champion ahead of Burnley clash

Tottenham Hotspur will provide the opposition for Burnley as they return to the Premier League next month.

Scott Parker will take his current side to the home of his former employers on the opening weekend of the new campaign in what is sure to be a stern test of the Clarets credentials. Spurs, who are embarking on life under new manager Thomas Frank, have experienced a successful transfer window so far as the former Brentford boss looks to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited from Ange Postecoglou.

Loan deals for Lens defender Kevin Danso and Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel have been converted into permanent moves and a big money deal was secured for West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus. Spurs have also brought in Japanese defender Kota Takai and they are now said to be one of a number of clubs keen on Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott after he impressed during England’s successful Under-21s European Championship campaign.

Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider: “There’s no shortage of interest in Harvey Elliott. Newcastle and Tottenham are the latest names I’ve heard, both of them are going to test the waters and see what it would take to bring him in. They’ll speak to his agent and find out what he’s asking for and what Liverpool are going to want. Both clubs will know what he can do, they’ll know the pros and the cons, and they’ll weigh those up against his price tag before making a move.

“Then he’s got the likes of Brighton and a few clubs in Germany having a look at him too. I think he could be an asset to any of those clubs because he’s a very talented player. These clubs will have been watching him with England’s Under-21s and after seeing the way he played in that side, they’re now prepared to make a move. He doesn’t have much of a place at Liverpool any more, so they’re ready to let him go. It could be one that drags on until late in the window, because he’s going to have to consider all of his options before making a final decision.”

There will be a fresh feel around Tottenham Hotspur when Burnley mark their return to the Premier League with a visit to North London next month.

Major changes have been made on the back of a season of contrasting emotions as Spurs bounced back from ending the campaign just one place above the relegation zone by winning the Europa League and securing a return to the Champions League. Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou parted company with the club just weeks after their final win against Manchester United and Brentford boss Thomas Frank was quickly named as his successor.

The Dane looks to be keen to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited after permanent deals for former loan signings Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel were confirmed and Japanese defender Kota Takai also joined the club in a reported £4.5 million deal.

There has been speculation Frank could raid his old club for Brentford duo Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo - but it is West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus who looks set to become the first major signing of a new era after The Guardian reported Spurs have agreed a £54.5 million deal for the Ghana international. Kudus is reportedly set to undergo a medical on Thursday afternoon as he edges closer to becoming the first West Ham player to directly join Spurs since current Burnley manager Scott Parker. The Guardian also reports Kudus reported late for training on two occasions over the last week before handing in a transfer request in an effort to force a move away from the London Stadium.

Walker’s Clarets move ‘makes sense’

Former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has delivered his take on Burnley’s surprise signing of Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.

The 96-times capped England international officially became the Clarets latest addition of the summer transfer window on Friday after a fee of around £5 million had been agreed between the two clubs. The move reunites Walker with his former Spurs team-mate Scott Parker at Turf Moor as the Clarets boss looks to lean on the experience of the defender throughout what is sure to be a challenging season.

Lineker believes that experience will prove ‘invaluable’ during the campaign and gave his backing to the move.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the former Barcelona and England striker said: “Makes a lot of sense to me, that one. Kyle Walker going there, a bit of old, an old head around the dressing room is always invaluable. He’s a proper professional captain at Manchester City for a while. I think it’s a good one.”

Tottenham Hotspur are poised to test the resolve of Burnley for star defender Maxime Esteve, according to reports.

The Frenchman, who was part of a defence that kept 30 clean sheets and conceded just 16 times last season, is said to be on the radar of both Everton and Tottenham according to reports earlier in the summer. L’Equipe, meanwhile, have since suggested FA Cup winners Crystal Palace also hold an interest, as do Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich, although not to the same extent as the Premier League outfit.

Burnley will be keen to keep hold of their defender, who arrived at Turf Moor in January 2024 from Ligue 1 side Montpellier. But now there are fresh reports Spurs are preparing to make their move.

Sport Witness report: “Tottenham Hotspur were interested in move for Maxime Estève during the last winter market. Spurs weren’t able to get a deal over the line for the Burnley player and a transfer didn’t appear to be advanced at any stage.

“That doesn’t mean Tottenham completely walked away from the idea, as made clear by a claim from France on Tuesday evening. According to L’Equipe, Spurs’ attempts during January were real, and it’s even claimed Tottenham made a €24m offer to Burnley at the beginning of the market.

“Burnley rejected the offer for the 23-year-old, being set against him leaving during the winter window.”

But now it’s reported their interest remains and they are aiming to go back in for the defender. The defender has previously spoken of his passion for Burnley.

“I am a Burnley player, I love this club and I'm very, very good here,” he said in April. “So I don't think about nothing, nowhere, I just think about football in Burnley and finish the season very well. That's the most important, finishing in the Premier League. That's the objective. I just think about this.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has stated he is “extremely proud” that the so-called ‘Bill Nicholson gates’ will be returning to the club’s new ground this summer.

A key feature of Tottenham's former home, the gates were removed in August 2015 in order to carefully store and preserve them to avoid any damage during the new stadium construction.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened its doors for the first time in 2019 but the gates never returned, instead remaining in storage. However, that is now due to change.

“We have taken our time in finding the most appropriate location to reinstate the gates within the new stadium environs – mindful of the significant levels of construction and change the area has seen over the past decade,” Spurs said in a statement.

“Working in close consultation with our Fan Advisory Board (FAB), we have identified a location – within PAXTON17, between the Ticket Office and historic buildings at the north of the stadium – at which the gates will be reinstated.

“Enabling works have now commenced with a view to the gates being in position ahead of our first home Premier League match of the season against Burnley on Saturday, August 16.”

The black and gold wrought iron gates became synonymous with Nicholson following a famous photograph taken by Peter Robinson in the 1970s.

Spurs added: “Bill himself first stepped through those gates as a young player in 1936 when he arrived for a trial, going on to be a key player in Arthur Rowe’s trailblazing 1950/51 League title-winning side before himself becoming the club’s most decorated manager, achieving a League and FA Cup Double in 1961 and our first ever European triumph two years later – the start of what became a trophy-laden era in N17.

"Generations of fans, players and staff followed in Bill’s footsteps through the gates on the way to White Hart Lane and we recognise their significant cultural and historic value.

"The gates will provide a fantastic photo opportunity for fans on matchdays and a key point of local interest – forming part of our Heritage Tour that offers fans and visitors an in-depth journey through the club and the area’s storied past, architectural gems and the remarkable individuals who have shaped its legacy.”

While the ex-Brentford man faces PSG in the European Cup three days before Spurs’ Premier League opener, his first real taste of competitive action will come against Scott Parker’s side.

Frank replaces Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked despite leading Spurs to Europa League triumph, a victory that ended the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy.

It was Tottenham’s horrid league form that led to Postecoglou’s departure, as the North London outfit finished 17th in the table with 22 league defeats to their name.

Speaking in his first interview as Spurs boss, Frank made his intentions crystal clear.

"The intention is to play aggressive, front-footed football,” he said.

"I know the ethos and the history of the club is massive on attacking football and there’s so much attacking talent in the squad, which I’m so excited about.

"They’ve shown over the last two seasons their ability to score goals is fantastic. I love a team that is scoring goals.

"I’m also a big believer that if you don’t take a risk, then that’s also a risk. It’s important we take risks. If you don’t risk the ball, you risk not creating anything, so I’m a big believer in that. We need to be brave. For me, if the players lose the ball by trying, that’s never a problem with me.”

After losing 10 of their 19 home league games this season, Frank knows they must improve on their home ground.

That’s exactly where they will kick off the 2025/26 season when they take on the newly-promoted Clarets.

"First and foremost, it’s a fantastic fanbase,” Frank added. “How can we create these magic moments with the fans? Moments that will last with the fans forever.

“It’s about going on a journey together, a journey where there will be ups and downs and it’s how we get through these ups and downs together.

"Of course the connection from the team to the fans and from me to the fans is going to be crucial.

"A very important thing is to make our home stadium a fortress. That can only be the fans and us together, so that needs to be an ongoing relationship. We need to build that because I want our home to be very, very difficult to come to. We can only do that together.”
