King Charles III learned how to throw an American football like a quarterback. Thankfully, there was no tush push.

The 76-year-old monarch visited Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as part of a community event sponsored by the Premier League club and the NFL on Wednesday.

The king got some throwing advice from Phoebe Schecter, captain on Britain's women's flag football team, and then gave it a shot.

Efe Obada, a British-Nigerian defensive end who played for the Washington Commanders for the past three seasons, said the king “got stuck in” and had good energy.

“His technique wasn’t immaculate, I wanted him to get a little closer to the target so he could get it in but he was having a great time and got a good reception,” Obada said.

Spurs and the NFL sponsor The Huddle Project, which helps children throughout the Tottenham area.

Tottenham hosts NFL games each season.

The king also posed for photos with Spurs soccer star Son Heung-min.

The King was told he was “bigger than Beyonce” when he celebrated community projects boosted by a football stadium where the US superstar is staging her UK concerts.

Charles visited the home of Tottenham Hotspur to highlight the Premier League club’s work supporting local businesses and good causes and its collaboration with America’s National Football League (NFL) which stages games at the arena.

During the visit the head of state could not resist throwing an American football under the watchful eye of the longest-serving British NFL player Efe Obada.

Gina Moffatt, 48, an ex-offender who turned her life around with help form the King’s Trust, formerly the Prince’s Trust, now runs a successful restaurant in Tottenham employing 15 full time staff.

She told the King: “I’m so excited that you’re even back in Tottenham, this year’s looking all good, Tottenham Hotspur’s doing great stuff.

“We’ve got Beyonce coming but you’re bigger than Beyonce.”

The US superstar is due to perform at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June, return performances for the singer who staged concerts at the venue a few years ago.

Charles and his wife visited the area in 2011 after the Tottenham riots, a visit that was billed as the time as the then prince of Wales coming to listen to residents.

During the visit he met students from the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham, a state-funded high achieving sixth form located on the stadium campus and co-sponsored by Tottenham Hotspur, and chatted to other people supported by his trust.

On the pitch he received a rapturous reception from dozens of school children and was handed an American football by Obada.

After Charles’ effort, Obada said: “I love the King’s energy and the fact he came here and got stuck in.

“His technique wasn’t immaculate, I wanted him to get a little closer to the target so he could get it in but he was having a great time and got a good reception.”

Dion Dublin responded to an irate Tottenham Hotspur fan who interrupted the BBC’s FA Cup coverage live on air.

The BBC Sport panel were giving their half-time analysis of the FA Cup clash between Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (9 February) when they were interrupted by an angry Spurs fan, banging on the studio window.

Presenter Mark Chapman said: “They’re angry they’re behind. Take us through, Dion, take us through the goal...”

A visibly annoyed Dublin replied: “I’ll take him outside in a minute.”

Chapman playfully responded: “If you do that, I’ll be just behind you, alright?”

Do Tottenham really have the worst injury crisis in the Premier League?

Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa at the weekend means that the club have exited two cup competitions in the space of four days.

And while pressure continues to build on Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, the Australian claimed that his side will be an “outstanding team” once the club’s injury crisis eases.

Spurs were without 11 senior players for the loss to Villa, and after the match Postecoglou defended his players, saying that “for two and a half months, this small group of players have given everything in multiple competitions”.

And while Spurs’ injury crisis has been well-documented amidst their fall to 14th in the Premier League, several other clubs have suffered mini-crises after injuries to vital players and new signings.

So, should Postecoglou be given some leeway as he deals with a slew of injury problems, or have other teams managed to grind out results with problems that are equally as bad?

Tottenham’s current injury crisis

As mentioned above, Spurs were missing 11 senior players at the weekend, including their favoured centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven as well as starting goalkeeper Guigliemo Vicario and left-back Destiny Udogie.

In addition, Radu Dragusin recently suffered an ACL injury, having provided cover for the starting central pairing for the last couple of months.

The problems are less severe in midfield, with only James Maddison missing as it stands.

In attack, summer signings Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert are out, while Richarlison missed the match despite only returning from injury a couple of weeks ago.

On the wings, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner have been the other notable absentees in recent weeks.

Ranking each Premier League club’s injury problems

Liverpool

Arne Slot’s side have perhaps been the luckiest - or simply the best-performing – side in terms of injuries, with only Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez currently out.

While the club have had issues with Diogo Jota and others at times this season, the league leaders remain the least-affected club so far this season.

Nottingham Forest

Forest are another side with just two current injuries – to Callum Hudson-Odoi and Murillo.

Fulham

The Cottagers have three current injury lay-offs, with Harry Wilson, Kenny Tete and Reiss Nelson out, though nobody in the squad has suffered a season-ending problem.

Brentford

The Bees are currently missing six players, with Josh Dasilva, Rico Henry and Mark Flekken the main absentees.

Igor Thiago, Aaron Hickey and Gustavo Nunes are also out.

Leicester City

The only long-term injury for the Foxes came to Issahaku Fatawu, who is out until next season. Ricardo Pereira, Jannik Vestergaard, Jamie Vardy and Victor Kristiansen are out for a couple of weeks.

Manchester United

United have suffered well-documented problems with the fitness of both Luke Shaw and Mason Mount this season, with the former approaching a year since he started for the club.

Jonny Evans and Lisandro Martinez are the other players currently out, with the latter having suffered a cruciate ligament injury against Palace last week.

Crystal Palace

Though Palace are currently missing seven players, only two of them are long lay-offs – Doucoure and Chadi Riad.

Eze, Nketiah, Richards and Ward are the short-term absentees for Oliver Glasner.

Chelsea

Though plenty is made of the depth of their squad, Chelsea have struggled with injuries to key players, with seven currently out.

Wesley Fofana remains the main long-term absence, with Benoit Badiashile and Nicolas Jackson expected back this month.

Marc Guiu is currently out for an unknown period, while Romeo Lavia is struggling to play consecutive games at present.

Everton

The Toffees are another club with seven players currently on the treatment table, with Orel Mangala out for nearly the rest of the year.

Attacking options Armando Broja and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are out for at least a month, while Dwight McNeil, Youssef Chermiti, Seamus Coleman and Vitalii Mykolenko are out until the backend of this month.

Ipswich

Relegation-threatened Ipswich are missing some key players at the moment, with Wes Burns and Chiedozie Ogbene likely out for the rest of the season, and Sammie Szmodics out for an undefined period.

Christian Walton and Conor Chaplin are the other players on the treatment table at present.

Southampton

The Saints are currently missing five players, with Tyler Dibling having made the bench last week after a short lay-off.

At present, Jack Stephens, Ryan Fraser, Flynn Downes, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Ross Stewart are out, though none of them are expected to be out past March.

Aston Villa

Villa are only missing a few players at present, though Ezri Konsa may well be added to that list after coming off against Spurs.

Pau Torres is the main longer-term absence, while Tyrone Mings and Matty Cash will be out until the end of February. Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley should also return towards the end of the month.

Newcastle

Though the Magpies only have five players missing at present, the personnel missing means that it’s one of the more serious issues.

Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes are all currently out, with Jamal Lascelles the long-term absence, though Eddie Howe’s side were also missing Botman - and other defenders at points – for much of the start of the season.

Wolves

Wolves are another relegation-threatened side with some key long-term injuries, with Yerson Mosquera and Enso Medina out until the end of the season.

In addition, Sasa Kalajdzic, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Boubacar Traore will be out for the next few weeks.

West Ham

As the Hammers have improved under Graham Potter, fans may be able to look forward to further improvements after welcoming back some key players.

Six players are currently out, including key first-team players such as Michail Antonio, Crysencio Summerville, Lucas Paqueta, Edson Alvarez, Niclas Fullkrug and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Arsenal

Though Arsenal currently only have five players missing, the injury to Martin Odegaard earlier in the season came at a defining time for the Gunners, who are now also missing key players in Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Ben White.

Takehiro Tomiyasu remains out, while Gabriel Jesus also suffered an ACL injury earlier this year.

In addition, Arsenal are the club who have suffered the highest total number of injuries so far this season, with 27 different incidents according to Physio Room.

Manchester City

Such is the importance of Rodri that you could argue that his injury alone propels City up this list. However, the club have also suffered plenty of problems in defence this season, with John Stones, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji all suffering lay-offs at one point or another.

At the moment, Ake, Doku and Ederson are also out, while winter signing Nico Gonzalez is being assessed after coming off on his debut against Leyton Orient.

Brighton

The Seagulls had 12 players out at the same time at one point in December, and though that has eased slightly, they’re still without eight members of the squad.

Igor Julio is out for the rest of the season after needing hamstring surgery, with James Milner likely out until April and both Jason Steele and Ferdi Kadioglu out until March.

In addition, first-team players Solly March, Pervis Estupinan, Mats Wieffer and Lewis Dunk are all currently absent.

Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola’s high-flying side have one of the worst crises in the league at the moment, with nine players out including main strikers Enes Unal and Evanilson. The former will be out until late in the year, with Evanilson expected back in a few months after fracturing his metatarsal.

In addition, Marcos Senesi, Julian Araujo, Adam Smith, Alex Scott, Luis Sinisterra and Julio Soler are all out, with the earliest expected return at the end of February.

Tottenham

Overall, it does appear that Spurs have had the worst injury problems in the league this season.

In addition to currently having 11 players out, the length of the different layoffs – and the importance of the various players – mean that Postecoglou probably does deserve some slack.

The starting centre-back pairing of Romero and van de Ven have been out since October, with the Argentine having foot and ankle problems and the Dutchman suffering hamstring issues. Both were rushed back for the December match against Chelsea, but neither finished the game and they’ve been suffering issues ever since.

Vicario has been out since the end of November, while another starting defender, Destiny Udogie, has been out since the end of 2024, and they are now lacking cover at centre-back after the injury to Dragusin.

In midfield, Rodrigo Bentancur missed two league matches through concussion, while Pape Sarr missed two matches this year with a knock and James Maddison has been out since the end of January.

Brennan Johnson has been out since mid-January with a calf strain, with Dominic Solanke suffering a knee injury around the same time.

Wilson Odobert has been out since September, while Richarlison has missed a total of 15 games in the league and was then forced off against Brentford last week. Finally, Werner has been out since the beginning of 2025.

Aston Villa face Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the FA Cup when the two teams clash with each other at Villa Park.

Tottenham come into the game on the back of a resounding 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final. Ange Postecoglou’s men were played off the park at Anfield and didn’t register a shot on target during their failed attempt to reach Wembley.

The pressure continues to mount on Postecoglou, with Spurs also languishing in 14th in the Premier League, but progressing into the next round would bring some breathing room.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, meanwhile, lost 2-0 to rivals Wolves last weekend, but their season is progressing well. They sit eighth in the league and have secured an automatic place in the last 16 of the Champions League. Victory over Spurs would continue their strong form and they may call on new recruit Marcus Rashford after his January move from Manchester United.

Tottenham are in limbo as Ange Postecoglou must ponder what comes next

Ange Postecoglou may be a prisoner of his deeds. Or he may be a prisoner of his words. “I don't usually win things, I always win things in my second year,” he memorably said in September. There are times when it seems that Postecoglou can specialise in backing himself into corners, while simultaneously picking hills to die upon.

He may need to downgrade ‘always’ back to ‘usually’: after a 4-0 Carabao Cup shellacking at Anfield, Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of domestic silverware could be ended within four days. It would leave only the Europa League and him probably with nothing to show for his season.

It may put him in good company. Tottenham’s finest managers of the last three decades, in Mauricio Pochettino, Martin Jol and Harry Redknapp, won nothing. Their only trophies in that time came from two unloved figures, in George Graham and Juande Ramos. Given chairman Daniel Levy’s apparent lack of interest in honours and focus on the bottom line, the more damning and damaging detail is the Premier League table, showing Tottenham in 14th, on course for their lowest finish in 21 years. They have not ended up below 14th for 31, since they were managed by Ossie Ardiles, another romantic from thousands of miles away who is fondly remembered for his attacking ethos but who was undermined by a combination of results and a seeming lack of interest in defending.

Mathys Tel is poised to start for Tottenham Hotspur against Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Tel made his debut for Spurs against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final midweek, coming on in the first half as Ange Postecoglou’s side went down 4-0.

After the former Bayern star replaced the injured Richarlison, who has suffered a calf injury, and with fellow forward Dominic Solanke also on the sidelines hurt, Tel is ready to take on a leading role at Villa Park.

Teenage prospect Tel only made four starts for Bayern Munich during the first half of the season, which resulted in the France Under-21 international seeking a January move and Postecoglou will try to manage the 19-year-old’s minutes.

“For himself and Kevin (Danso) in many respects, it wasn’t an indication of how we want to go about things, but just being out there, playing your first game, you get that out of your system,” Postecoglou reflected.

“We’re going to have to lean on Mathys a fair bit now, but he came here to play.

“His physical condition is not too bad. He hasn’t played a lot but watching him in training and (Thursday) night, he was still moving quite well.

“We have to be careful with him also, but he came here to play and he’ll get an opportunity to do that.”

Postecoglou has limited resources for the quick turnaround to Villa with 12 players set to be absent, which includes Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Solanke.

It has resulted in extended opportunities for talented teenage summer recruits Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, while 17-year-old Mikey Moore has also earned regular minutes this term.

The number of young players already being used by Postecoglou means he is loathe to put more in from the club’s academy set-up, especially in such high-pressure situations.

He added: “We’ve already got young players out there. There’s 18-year-olds, 19-year-olds, 17-year-olds out there.

“We saw what happened (Thursday) and our players are now getting criticised. Most of them will be able to handle it, but I wouldn’t want to expose a young player to something like that, especially the way the world is today.

“You know we don’t want to make determinations in a snap instance and destroy careers. I’m not going to expose young players who I don’t think are ready for that, so we don’t have the opportunity to rotate.

“I think it will be a similar kind of team that rolls out on Sunday. We’ve been doing this for quite a while now for the last three months and we have handled that pretty well at times and that’s what we will try and do on Sunday.”

Jamie Carragher slams Tottenham and claims ‘Accrington Stanley gave Liverpool more trouble’

Submitted by daniel on

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher claimed League Two side Accrington Stanley were a more difficult opponent for the Reds than Tottenham in their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Arne Slot’s side romped to a 4-0 win in the second leg at Anfield, easily overturning the 1-0 deficit that they had faced from the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, when Lucas Bergvall had given his side the win.

And the abject nature of Spurs’ performance leaves yet more questions over the tactics and future of manager Ange Postecoglou, with Sky Sports pundits heavily criticising the Australian and his players.

Carragher questioned Spurs’ overall approach in a game that saw the visitors register zero shots on target, saying that Accrington Stanley gave Liverpool “more trouble” in the sides’ FA Cup meeting in January, which Liverpool also won 4-0.

“I am not saying this to make a headline. I think Accrington Stanley, Liverpool didn’t have their best team, but they gave more trouble to Liverpool than Tottenham tonight,” said Carragher.

“He’s [Postecoglou] a manager who is just trying to find something and what he’s trying is not working. But this is not just this run. This goes back to last season. I think they’ve lost 20 out of the last 45 games. It’s an awful lot,” Carragher added.

“We’re talking almost 50 per cent of the Premier League games he’s lost going back. This is not just this season.

“Tottenham had such a brilliant start to his first season – top of the league after 10 games. He continued to go with the idea even with nine men – since then the record is horrendous for Tottenham.”

The former Liverpool defender went on to suggest that he wasn’t surprised about the outcome of the match.

"It's Tottenham!” Carragher said. “When do Tottenham ever win a big game? When do Tottenham ever go and surprise, win against the odds?

"The odds were massively in favour against Liverpool, they're at Anfield, they're the best team in the country, possibly the best team in Europe right now.

"But it's not just this Spurs team. They never shock you, never do something out of the ordinary,” he added.

Liverpool have work to do when they host Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg this evening.

The Reds lost the first leg 1-0 in London after Lucas Bergvall scored late in the game to give Spurs the win and, more crucially, a slim advantage heading into tonight’s match at Anfield. Arne Slot’s men have the ability and willingness to come from behind and reach the final at Wembley. Liverpool have lost just one of their last seven, when Slot fielded a weakened team in the Champions League against PSV, and two goals from Mo Salah in their recent win over Bournemouth means their leading goalscorer is in top form.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have struggled to build any momentum in their recent games but a confidence-boosting win over Brentford came at the right time for Ange Postecoglou’s side. They’ve won consecutive games for the first time in a month and hope to avoid defeat this evening to secure a spot at Wembley.
