Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that the club is struggling to get transfer deals over the line this summer as a result of PSR regulations, in a revelation which may come as a boost to Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs and the Magpies are being increasingly credited with transfer interest in Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, who has been transfer listed at Stamford Bridge following the arrivals of Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.

Enzo Maresca is open to letting Jackson leave, despite the player making 37 appearances across all competitions last season and scoring 13 goals. The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Villarreal in 2023 for a reported £32 million. The Express claims that the London outfit would be willing to part ways with the striker for £50 million this summer.

Chelsea open to £50m Jackson departure

Maresca has said: “When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico’s situation. At the moment we also had two strikers arrive, Joao [Pedro] and Liam [Delap]. So we will see what happens.”

Jackson was left out of the Chelsea friendly against Bayer Leverkusen as uncertainty builds around his future and The Standard claims that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have both ‘registered interest’ in the talisman.

Spurs are said to be ‘fans’ of Jackson but would only sanction a move should Richarlison leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Brazil international, who struggled for consistent game time amid injury problems last season, has turned down moves to Saudi Arabia during this window.

Thomas Frank has already seen the club spend £55 million on West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus since his arrival but confirmation that Son Heung-min has left the club leaves Spurs in the market for more attacking acquisitions.

Eddie Howe drops Newcastle United transfer revelation

Newcastle United are also in need of added goalpower and set to rival Tottenham Hotspur over the transfer of Jackson. Callum Wilson left St James’ Park as a free agent this summer, since joining West Ham, and there are big question marks over the future of star man Alexander Isak.

However, Spurs are favourites to be able to outbid Newcastle United with fresh quotes from Howe revealing that the Tyneside outfit has been beleaguered by financial regulations. Over the weekend, he said: "We're controlled by PSR. That's still limiting what we can do and that's the reality.

"I've said many times, we're not the highest payers in the league. We're far from it and that is sometimes reflected in the choices players make. I don't think there's many players who have come here and haven't benefited from the experience Newcastle can give you.

"Playing in front of these supporters, that's an absolute privilege and an honour that's never lost on me. It's a special place to be. Some players have a different choice. Finances play a part in that."

Tottenham are about to miss the opportunity to temporarily replace James Maddison at a reduced cost. Thomas Frank has lost Maddison for much of the season, if not all of it, with the England international rupturing his ACL and requiring surgery that will signal the start of at least eight months of recovery.

It’s a crushing blow for Tottenham, with Maddison one of their most dangerous players, while he is also a leader on and off the pitch. But injuries are a reality of football, and Frank must now concentrate on replacing Maddison, at least on a temporary basis, and that kind of player is never going to come cheap.

Manchester City starlet James McAtee has been linked, although he will reportedly cost more than £40million this summer, with City well aware of his talent and potential. Another player City are looking to offload is Jack Grealish, who struggled for game time at the Etihad Stadium last season.

Grealish would be a well-suited replacement for Maddison, and he looks to be available on loan, which makes it a perfect deal for Spurs. Ultimately, Frank only needs a replacement until Maddison is back, and with Tottenham likely seeing Lucas Bergval as a long-term replacement, £40million would be a lot to spend on a temporary replacement.

Grealish would be available for a loan fee and without the commitment of a permanent deal, but according to Fabrizio Romano, Everton are now stepping up their efforts to get a deal done. He wrote on X: “Everton keep advancing in talks for Jack Grealish as priority target. The player has opened doors to the move and negotiations are underway. Everton and Man City, discussing terms of loan deal as @_pauljoyce reports.”

The writing was on the wall for Grealish at City after he was left out of the club’s final game last season. Guardiola said when asked: “It was selection. The last two months, month and a half there were five or six players at home every time and this time I decided for these guys. No more than that.

"Of course Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it. With us or another place. It's a question for Jack, his agent and the club."

Grealish will have next summer’s FIFA World Cup at the forefront of his mind, and he will be desperate to be included in England’s squad, something he is at serious risk of missing out on by not playing with City. He will likely get regular game time at an ever-improving Everton side, and he will go there with a real point to prove to Thomas Tuchel.

That’s something Tottenham should be interested in benefiting from as they look to replace the loss of Maddison’s creativity. It’s not too late, but Spurs do not look as though they are actively looking to get involved in a deal for the England international.

Tottenham Hotspur are exploring a deal for a new attacking midfielder after James Maddison’s devastating injury blow.

The Spurs midfielder requires surgery after rupturing his ACL in a pre-season clash with Newcastle United in South Korea and is expected to be sidelined for the majority of the campaign. It is a tough blow for Tottenham but one that feels particularly cruel on Maddison less than 12 months out from the FIFA World Cup in Canada, United States and Mexico.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, a replacement for Maddison is something Spurs are now on the market for as they look to have enough squad depth to challenge in the Premier League and Champions League.

Spurs lost 4-0 to Bayern Munich on Thursday and have work to do to catch up with the European elite. They finished 17th in the Premier League last season and significant improvement is expected after Ange Postecoglou was sacked, despite winning the Europa League.

Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder search

Writing in his Give Me Sport newsletter, Romano was asked whether Spurs would sign a replacement for Maddison and said: "Yes, it's likely. They are calling around to explore the market."

Spurs had looked to be getting a deal done for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White after activating a £60m release clause in his contract. However, Forest threatened legal action as they claimed the price of the clause had been leaked when it was supposed to remain a secret. Gibbs-White has since signed a new deal at the City Ground.

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has been linked while other reports have claimed a bid has already been submitted and rejected for Como star Nico Paz. Spurs offered £35m for the player but Como will not start discussions below £52m, as they value the player at around £60m.

Spurs get their competitive campaign underway against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday before opening their Premier League campaign at home to newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday, August 16.

Thomas Frank reflects on James Maddison injury

Addressing Maddison’s injury, Spurs boss Thomas Frank said: “I think it’s disappointing but also devastating for me and mainly for Madders that he’s out of the team.

“We will miss him and no doubt he will miss playing football.”

And looking ahead to Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup final, Frank said: “We will 100 per cent be ready for that game, I’m not in doubt about that.

“There are six days ahead, we have a normal week for the first time in the last two weeks so with everything – just getting down, less travel, energise them (the players), three or four good sessions – then we will be ready against PSG.”

Spurs have also been linked with a move for Eberechi Eze this summer but the Crystal Palace man has also been the subject of interest from Arsenal. It is not clear how much a deal for the player will cost as his £68m release clause has now expired.

Tottenham Hotspur have no more friendly games left on their pre-season schedule after ending their preparations with a 4-0 defeat at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Thursday night.

Spurs head to Italy next week to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final at the Stadio Friuli in Udine. Tottenham beat Manchester United in the Europa League final to qualify for the game while PSG battered Inter Milan 5-0 to win the Champions League for the first time in their history to earn their spot.

Thomas Frank has strengthened his side ahead of the new season but there is still room for more additions at the club and the need for new players has been heightened by James Maddison’s injury.

The former Leicester City man has ruptured his ACL and requires surgery that will rule him out for the majority of the season. And Frank is said to have held direct talks with one potential replacement.

Thomas Frank holds ‘direct talks’ with Harvey Elliott

One player on Spurs’ radar is Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott. The Reds player was an effective impact substitute for Arne Slot last term but with the Anfield club signing the likes of Florian Wirtz, the midfielder’s role at Anfield could be further diminished.

Football Transfers reports Spurs are ‘making significant progress’ in their pursuit of Elliott with Frank speaking directly to the player to pitch his vision to the England Under-21 international.

The Reds, according to an earlier report from The Athletic, value Elliott at £40m this summer but will demand a fee in the region of £50m if interested clubs do not agree to a buyback clause with the Merseyside club.

RB Leipzig are also interested in Elliott and have reportedly held talks with the player this week, who appears keen to secure his next club before the competitive campaign gets underway. Spurs can offer Elliott Champions League football while Leipzig missed out on the competition.

The Premier League is also familiar to Elliott, and a switch to North London would be a less significant change in terms of location compared to Leipzig.

What Harvey Elliott has said on Liverpool future amid Tottenham interest

Addressing his future, Elliott - who has been branded as a special talent by ex-Liverpool midfielder Neil Mellor - said recently: “If I had it my way I would be here [at Liverpool] for the rest of my career, it's as simple as that.

“ I love everything about the club, but at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what's best for me. I have big ambitions. I want to get in the World Cup squad.

“I want to keep being successful as a player. It's something I still need to review. I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation. we have many new players who have come in so whether it blocks the path for me I'm not sure. It's something I need to have a look at and decide.”

It feels like the proper start of a new era for Tottenham Hotspur with a new manager in charge and the first time in a decade where a familiar face won’t be in the starting XI.

For 10 years, Spurs have been able to rely on Son Heung-min or Harry Kane to make a difference, however, Thomas Frank needs to find a new hero to help pull his team through when the going gets tough.

Mohammed Kudus will add balance on the right wing, however, the report of a bid for Rodrygo at Real Madrid is the sort to get fans excited. With James Maddison expected to be injured for the long term though, Daniel Levy will need to loosen the purse strings like never before.

Tottenham face Burnley with new boys already up against it

A good start would be to hijack Arsenal’s move for Eberechi Eze, not only would he cover Maddison in the short term, but he could be the long-term creative hub for Spurs attack too. With his £68m transfer release clause expiring though, Crystal Palace might be looking for a price war.

What makes things easier, is the Europa League win secured by Ange Postecoglou gives the recruitment team the carrot of Champions League football to dangle in front of prospective targets.

Spurs have mixed fortunes on the opening day but will be encouraged by having Burnley up first at home. The newly-promoted side will be led by former Tottenham skipper Scott Parker who led his team to several defensive records in the Championship last season.

Being solid at the back is a pre-requisite for staying in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see how their form translates. The loss of James Trafford between the sticks isn’t going to help their cause though.

How Spurs have performed in the last five seasons on matchday 1

The last two years have seen draws away from home with their only wins in the last five seasons coming at home. In six seasons, Frank will be the fifth different manager in the dugout for the opening game. All other managers have since left and either won trophies or over-achieved, maybe the problem wasn’t the managers after all.

Mixed fortunes, but can Spurs start a new era with a positive opening day?

Leicester 1 – 1 Tottenham

Brentford 2 – 2 Tottenham

Tottenham 4 – 1 Southampton

Tottenham 1 – 0 Man City

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed or endured one of the strangest seasons in their modern history last year after a bipolar campaign that delivered major success but also one of the worst league records ever.

Ange Postecoglu should be getting a statue made of him after his Europa League success, instead though, the dismal Premier League points tally meant that Daniel Levy was left with little choice but to sack him.

There hasn’t just been a new direction in the dugout either with changes on the pitch likely to lead to an unfamiliar looking starting XI when 2025/26 kicks off competitively.

Summer signing Palhinha could see Archie Gray miss out for Spurs

Son Heung-min has bid an emotional farewell and there will be no James Maddison due to injury either, Thomas Frank is already up against it without a ball being kicked. What the new Spurs boss has managed to secure though is much needed experience in the middle of the park in the shape of Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich. The 30-year old has had a frustrating time in the Bundesliga but knows the Premier League well from his time at Fulham.

The 34-times capped Portugal international will bring a calmness to the Spurs engine room as well as the sort of control and physicality that has been missing recently, however, there is a downside to such a vastly experienced player arriving on loan who will be expected to start more often than not.

Archie Gray has played 99 senior games already at the tender age of 19 with all of them coming at Leeds United and Tottenham, he knows nothing other than the pressure of having to perform in front of big crowds with high expectations.

Despite his versatility, Gray’s best position is as a defensive midfielder where his ability on the ball, reading of the game and composure are his greatest assets.

He is more than capable of filling in at the back, but he has always done his best work in the engine room, in the position that Palhinha is set to occupy.

At best, it might give the £30m teenager the chance to develop in his preferred position, at worst, it might see the Scotland and England eligible youth international regress due to not playing regular football or pinning down a stable role in the starting XI.

What does Gray think his best position is?

Asked last season what his best position was, Gray was diplomatic, with the standard utility player answer of ‘I’m just happy to play’ being trotted out:

“To be honest,” he tells The i Paper, “I don’t really know myself. I always trust the manager. He knows best and wherever he thinks to put me on the pitch or bring me on in the game, I’ll back that 100 per cent. I’m an 18-year-old – he knows the game a lot better than I do.

“It was difficult at the start,” he admits about first moving to Spurs. “Moving away from the family is always tough, and all my friends. But after a month or two it was easy to settle in, especially with the bunch of lads we’ve got and the coaches, they all helped me. I definitely feel really settled with the group and with the fans at the club – and I’ve always got people visiting me.”

What Gray needs now is stability. He is at a key age in terms of his development and being a good player in a number of roles should no longer be his focus. He has the potential to be an exceptional player in midfield, but he won’t improve if he is sitting on the bench or providing cover in defence when others are injured or in need of a rest.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer hasn’t quite gone according to plan with Thomas Frank inheriting a squad that needs a lot of work.

With Son Heung-min signing for LAFC and James Maddison injured for most of the season, the need to add goals and assists is even greater than it was before the transfer window opened. A link to Rodrygo is a positive one as is the availability and possibility of hijacking a move for Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace.

With bodies short on the ground, having someone of the England international’s quality capable of playing in a few different positions could be the perfect solution.

Who could Spurs swap with Crystal Palace to land Eberechi Eze?

The Eagles aren’t giving much away in terms of their acceptance that Eze is destined for greater things after leading them to the FA Cup with Oliver Glasner’s summer proving to every bit as frustrating as his opposite number in the Spurs dug-out.

Competing in Europe will also stretch his squad and the potential departures of both Eze and Marc Guehi must be giving him sleepless nights such is their important to the team.

Spurs could provide Palace with an easier to take antidote by providing them with two players who need more game time and who will cover the possible exits of Guehi and Eze. A swap deal for Eze, branded on a ‘different planet’ by Danny Murphy, would solve a lot of Frank’s issues. One player destined to leave Tottenham is Bryan Gil, a series of loan deals haven’t amounted to anything permanent and, with one year left on his contract, getting the 24-year old off the wage bill should be Daniel Levy’s priority especially if he could be used in a makeweight to sign Eze.

To sweeten the deal, newly signed from the J-League, Kota Takai could be loaned out to improve his chances of adapting to England and to the Premier League.

Staying in London would mean that he wouldn’t have to uproot and he would still be able to touch base with those behind the scenes at Spurs too. There are a lot of players currently in front of him in terms of centre-half but Palace might appreciate borrowing someone with the potential to be a Premier League regular.

What has Daniel Levy said about backing Thomas Frank?

In a controversial interview on The Overlap via Sky Sports, Spurs chairman Levy defended his record and suggested that Frank will be backed this summer, even if the evidence so far is a little thin: "We will support him to the best of our ability. If you look at transfer fees, we've been in the top four spenders since the stadium opened.

“We've spent around £700m net on new players. This isn't just about money, it's about some luck, having the right balance in the team, having the right coach. A lot of things have to come together. I very much hope Thomas brings all the right ingredients to put the club where it deserves, which is right at the top."

It’s not just about money, but with no Harry Kane, Son or Maddison, it certainly helps.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur risk missing out on Brentford striker Yoane Wissa with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr reportedly ready to meet Brentford’s valuation of the player.

The Magpies have already seen a bid rejected by the Bees this summer, with Wissa leaving the Bees' pre-season trip to Portugal amid the speculation over his future. He has since returned to training with Brentford but it remains unclear if he will remain in West London after the September 1 transfer deadline.

Brentford are said to value him at £50m after he scored 19 goals in the Premier League last term. They have also lost Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Nørgaard this summer and are resistant to losing another key player - having also seen Thomas Frank join Tottenham.

Spurs are still in need of more threat in attack and L’Equipe in France say Wissa is still on the club’s radar. However, the report has said Al-Nassr are the only club willing to match Brentford’s valuation and Saudi officials are now trying to convince the player to make the move to the Middle East.

Lack of suitable replacements makes Yoane Wissa deal difficult for Brentford to sanction

Newcastle are keen to sign Wissa amid ongoing uncertainty over Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park while they also need a replacement for Calum Wilson. The striker left as a free agent and has since joined West Ham United.

Brentford need to be careful not to be sucked into a relegation battle this season and with several players already leaving the club, they would need to have a replacement lined up for Wissa before sanctioning his exit.

The likes of Sunderland and Leeds United have strengthened significantly ahead of the 2025-26 campaign as they look to buck the trend of newly-promoted clubs going straight back down. For Brentford, a deal for Wissa must be the right price and a new striker must be signed.

Keith Andrews praises Yoane Wissa professionalism

Addressing the player’s situation, Brentford boss Keith Andrews told BBC Radio London this week: "Wissa came back from Portugal - that was the right thing for all parties.

"He was working very hard in the training ground in the build-up to the QPR game, obviously lacking in fitness. The players had yesterday off, and today was the first day we trained together as a group, and Yoane was there.

"Every coach would want him at the football club and every fan would want him at the football club, because he is an outstanding talent. He has proved to be an amazing football player for this club because of his importance within the group.

"I can't say that it has put me under a lot of stress because I do things one at a time. I am very understanding of the situation, having been in this industry for a long time.

"Transfer windows are always similar. I try to keep a good relationship with Wissa, and that's the way it has to remain. It's underpinned with mutual respect."

A Nottingham Forest transfer looks to have carved a path for Tottenham to offload a player this summer. This summer transfer window is key for Spurs, who need to take a big leap from last season, with Thomas Frank hoping to lead a charge for the European spots, while a solid Champions League run will also be expected.

Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha and others have been signed in a bid to make that happen, and more arrivals are expected, with another winger and a striker expected, while Frank may also want to add depth to other areas.

But Tottenham must also balance their spending with exits, and there are a handful of players who are likely to leave to make room for the incomings, both financially and in terms of actual squad space.

One of the players who could depart is £21.6million signing Bryan Gil, who has struggled to have an impact in North London since his 2021 arrival. Gil has had three loan spells since, including one with Girona last season.

Ange Postecoglou said a couple of months before Gil’s departure: “It’s not an issue with me. Yeah, there was a bit of interest in Bryan, a bit of interest in a lot of our players, but I’ve said this before it is not my role to push people out in that kind of situation. I still very much regard them as our players and Bryan is a fantastic young player. He works so hard to improve every day and this first half of the year he’s had a couple of injuries.

“People shouldn’t underestimate that, especially in a set-up like ours where most of the guys who had a strong pre-season are the ones that hit the ground running. He missed out on that but he wants to improve, loves the environment and we love having him part of the group. He’s still a young player with plenty of time to develop and happy to have him around for this second half of the year.”

Gil went on to make 25 league appearances with Girona last season, which is one more than he has made in total with Tottenham so far. The young Spaniard suffered a nasty knee injury going into the summer, and speaking following an operation , he said: “I am focusing on recovering and returning as best as possible. I haven't been overly concerned about the future. My agent will let me know how things will unfold. But the best option for me is the non-consolidation with Tottenham.”

On his struggles with Tottenham, he added: “I have no issues or negative feelings between us and Tottenham. Quite the opposite. Tottenham took a chance on me when I was young, and honestly, they treated me quite well. If I have to return there, I will focus on giving my best as always. I remain calm. No one can say I am unprofessional. I have always trained well and have done what I needed to do. Therefore, whatever happens will happen. Let’s see where we are next year."

Gil could now leave

Gil has been linked with a permanent exit as he works his way back to fitness, and according to Corriere dello Sport, the attacking midfielder has been offered to Bologna this summer. Bologna lost creative spark Dan Ndoye to Nottingham Forest this summer, and Gil could fulfil the same role.

It’s claimed Spurs sporting chief Fabio Paratici offered Gil to Bologna sporting director Giovanni Sartori recently, and there is an interest in further exploration int the deal from the Bologna side.

How much Tottenham would ask for Gil remains to be seen, but it seems they do have credible hope of offloading the 24-year-old this summer, and there is little doubt that the Spaniard does need a fresh start.

Millwall begin their Championship season against Norwich City this weekend and Alex Neil’s men look raring to go after a strong pre-season campaign.

The Lions won their last four friendly outings against Northampton Town, Bromley, Sutton United and Estoril Praia, and look to take that confidence to Carrow Road. The London outfit are also buoyed by a strong transfer window so far.

Middlesbrough striker Josh Coburn has been brought in on a permanent deal following his loan last season and has been among the goals this summer. Alfie Doughty arriving from Luton Town looks a coup with Zak Sturge and Steven Benda coming in from Premier League duo Chelsea and Fulham.

Millwall should look for one more piece of transfer business before Norwich City

One position that hasn’t had fresh blood is at centre-back. That hasn’t been a desperate priority for Millwall with Japhet Tanganga, Jake Cooper and Tristan Crama all confident at the heart of defence.

However, it’s a long Championship season and would not be unheard of for two of those players to be out injured at the same time. What’s more, Tanganga has been linked with a transfer away from The Den this summer, so adding an extra body could be wise.

Millwall have done business with Tottenham Hotspur before and should go knocking at the north London club’s door once again ahead of this weekend’s opener against Norwich City. Luka Vuskovic has been made available for loan and, after he has turned heads in pre-season, time is of the essence.

Lions should swoop for Luka Vuskovic

The 18-year-old has never made a competitive appearance for Spurs, despite signing in September 2023 for £12 million. The centre-back was just 16 years old when agreeing to join from Hajduk Split and spent the following seasons on loan at Radomiak and Westerlo, while remaining on the books at Split.

It’s only this summer that Vuskovic has officially arrived at Tottenham Hotspur and he does so with much hype surrounding his future. That’s been clear to see during the pre-season games too with the teenager looking at ease among the more senior Spurs players.

LondonWorld gave the defender a 10/10 score for his second half showing in that match. We wrote: “How about that? The giant provided the assist for Lankshear and then scored one himself with a striker’s finish. Some fantastic work defensively too, including a goal-saving block. That’s how you announce yourself. A beast in the making.”

Standing at 6’4”, Vuskovic looks a monster and the type of player who would slot in perfectly alongside Cooper or Tanganga. He’d provide a goal threat too and looks more than capable of taking the Championship by storm.

A loan move for the teenager would save Millwall another transfer outlay and would take the pressure off should a tasty bid come in for Tanganga. It seems a no brainer.

In other news, Championship relegation favourites and how Millwall, QPR and Charlton Athletic compare to rivals.
