‘He’s already legendary!’ - Teddy Sheringham shares which Tottenham player has superstar status

Son Heung-min is close to “legendary” status at Tottenham Hotspur, says ex-forward Teddy Sheringham, adding that the attacker has grown into “a real leader” with the club.

The South Korea international first joined the North London club in 2015 from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, and succeeded Hugo Lloris as captain before the 2023-24 season.

During his time with Spurs, he has helped them reach the UEFA Champions League Final and the EFL Cup Final, while his 159 goals puts him fifth on the club’s all-time scorer charts.

Son has previously spoken of his desire to be remembered fondly for his time with the club, but Sheringham thinks the star has already secured an outstanding legacy.

“Sonny is such a popular player,” he told Prime Casino. “He’s a superstar in Asia, and I think he’s a superstar in Tottenham.

“For me, in his tenth season, he’s already on the verge of legendary status. I think he’s already up there. Hopefully he can have a special season at the club.

“For Son to become a legend at the club, I think he simply just has to keep doing what he's doing.

“We’ve seen him blossom into a real leader over his time at Tottenham. This is his tenth season, and the fans absolutely love him.”

Son, who shared the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah for the 2021-22 Premier League season, has been named the Best Footballer in Asia a record nine times.

He also helped South Korea to the final of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, and helped guide them to gold-medal success in men’s football at the 2018 Asian Games.

'He needs to be ruthless!' - Teddy Sheringham highlights which Tottenham player must show no mercy

Dominic Solanke must show his “ruthless” side for Tottenham Hotspur if he is to be the man who can turn them into serious contenders, believes ex-striker Teddy Sheringham.

The forward joined the North London club from Bournemouth in a £55m transfer in August, penning a six-year deal with Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Solanke, who won his solitary cap for England back in 2017, enjoyed a prolific season with the Cherries last term, scoring 19 goals in 38 Premier League appearances.

But Sheringham believes he must be prepared to deliver on a bigger stage, at home and in the UEFA Europa League, if he is to prove himself as the missing link for Spurs.

“I think Dominic Solanke will be Tottenham’s most important player this season,” Sheringham told Prime Casino. “He’s the man that Ange and the club have placed a lot of faith in, to add the finishing touch.

“There’s an expectation that he will score the goals we need and will be the difference-maker in games that are tight.

“[But] he’s joined for a large fee and that adds a certain amount of pressure. He’s also making a step-up in his playing level.

“Tottenham create so many chances. When the games come thick and fast, when the energy levels are low, you need to take those.

“Solanke will need to be ruthless in front of goal. Tottenham will create the chances for him, [but] he has to take them.”

Tottenham and Solanke have endured a mixed start to the new season, with the latter suffering an ankle knock in their opening draw with Leicester City.

Ange Postecoglou laments 'frustrating' Tottenham loss to Newcastle: 'Story of our season so far'

It was a lost opportunity for Tottenham Hotspur, who fell 2-1 at Newcastle United on Sunday for their first loss of the young Premier League campaign.

Spurs enjoyed a big possession advantage over their hosts and outshot the Magpies 20-9 (6-3 on target), but they weren't able to prevent Alexander Isak from scoring in the 78th minute to give the home side all three points.

Instead, Tottenham exited St. James' Park without a result, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou to lament his side's lack of sharpness in front of goal.

"Story of our season so far really," Potecoglou told BBC Match of the Day. "We played well and controlled the game for the most part. They were a threat in transition but we still had enough chances to win the game comfortably.

"I thought we were handling the transitions. The goal we conceded in the second half was sloppy and we lost focus. The game should have been put to bed a lot longer before that.

"What I know is if we continue to play like that we will get our rewards. It's not an easy place to come. For the most part, I thought we handled that really well. The way we controlled the game was really pleasing.

"Frustrating more than anything else. It's three good performances but not the results that reflect that."

Things don't get easier for Tottenham, who host rivals Arsenal in the North London Derby following the international break.
