Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke in a week when the England international admitted there were no excuses for his current side in their battle against relegation from the Premier League.

The former Liverpool and Bournemouth frontman worked under current Magpies head coach Eddie Howe during his time at the Vitality Stadium and remained with the Cherries when Howe departed during the summer of 2020. Solanke helped Bournemouth return to the Premier League just over two years later and had scored 77 goals and provided 29 assists in 216 appearances by the time Spurs were tempted into making a successful £65m offer for his services during the summer of 2024.

Although the striker has struggled with injuries during his time in North London, he still has a respectable goalscoring record of 21 goals in 59 appearances - but he has been unable to inspire his side in their bid to avoid what could be considered to be a shock relegation from the top flight this season.

Speaking about his side’s struggles at the wrong end of the Premier League table after the midweek defeat against Crystal Palace, Solanke said: “We've just had a big conversation. We know the position we are in is definitely not where we want to be so we need to figure out how we are going to get out of it as soon as possible. We know there's been difficulties but we're not in a position to make any excuses anymore. We need to do the job on the pitch and I think it is easy to say that we want to be better, but we need to make sure we are better on the pitch.”

With Spurs now firmly in the battle to avoid the drop, the Daily Mail have reported Solanke has ‘emerged as a summer target’ for Newcastle as they look to boost a forward line that has struggled for goals this season. The report also claims current Magpies forward Will Osula is attracting interest from Crystal Palace and Aston Villa ahead of what they have claimed could be a ‘summer of change’ at St James Park.

Liverpool ‘in front’ of Arsenal in race for Magpies star

Several Newcastle United players have been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks - and Anthony Gordon has been prominent amongst them.

The former Everton forward has experienced mixed fortunes during the current season but has scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 41 appearances in all competitions. His form has reportedly increased interest in his services and former Everton CEO Keith Wyness believes there is a two-horse race for his signature with Arsenal and Liverpool set to go head-to-head this summer.

He told Football Insider: “His performances haven’t been great. He got booed off, I believe, at the weekend when Everton won up there. And of course, he wasn’t well received by the Everton fans as well. I think Arsenal may be a very good option for him, but I don’t see him fitting in quite that well into the Arsenal squad as I think he might do in Liverpool. So I think it’s still a two-horse race. And I’m not so sure Arsenal are really that keen right now. I think they will wait and see. But no, I think Liverpool, to me, have still got their heads in front.”

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes could be out until April following what has been described as a ‘serious muscle injury’.

Guimaraes suffered a hamstring injury and was forced off in the closing stages of Newcastle’s 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

On Friday morning, United head coach Eddie Howe was unable to give a clear prognosis on the Brazilian’s injury as the club awaited to hear the full extent of the issue.

Bruno Guimaraes injury blow

But by Friday evening, reports surfaced claiming that Guimaraes would be out until after the March international break.

Such an absence comes as a major blow to Newcastle, who have never won a Premier League match without Guimaraes in the squad since his £40million move from Lyon in 2022.

Football influencer Fabrizio Romano claimed Guimaraes is expected to be out for eight to 10 weeks with a ‘serious muscle injury’.

“Bruno Guimarães suffer 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 as he’ll be out for weeks,” Romano wrote. “Current expectation is for 𝟖/𝟏𝟎 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 — Newcastle and Seleção staff are in contact to assess his recovery.

“Bruno could travel to Brazil soon for further tests with his presence for March games already ruled out. He’ll be 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐂𝐔𝐏.”

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old midfielder had only just returned from a four-game absence due to an ankle injury. He started successive matches against Brentford and Spurs in the space of four days and went down injured in the closing stages of the latter.

On Friday morning, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “With Bruno, we're awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury.”

Bruno Guimaraes injury bombshell

And by Friday evening, the full extent was leaked in the Brazilian media with ESPN Brazil claiming Guimaraes could be out for up to 10 weeks.

The club and player are hopeful he will be back sooner than that though it is likely he will miss the next eight matches for Newcastle, including the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland, plus any potential further Champions League or FA Cup games. He has also been ruled out of Brazil’s March international break fixtures against France and Croatia.

Such an absence comes as a major blow to Newcastle, who have never won a Premier League match without Guimaraes since he made his debut for the club.

Football influencer Fabrizio Romano claimed Guimaraes could soon travel to Brazil for further tests having been ruled out for eight to 10 weeks.

“Bruno Guimarães suffer 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 as he’ll be out for weeks,” Romano wrote. “Current expectation is for 𝟖/𝟏𝟎 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 — Newcastle and Seleção staff are in contact to assess his recovery.

Bruno Guimaraes frustration

After suffering the injury on Tuesday, Guimaraes took to social media after the match to write: “ Very happy with the win! This looks much more like what we’re capable of doing. Great character from the team. Once again, I hope it’s nothing too serious and that he can be back soon.”

The news of Guimaraes’ injury also sparked questions as to why the midfielder was allowed to remain on the pitch as long as he did.

But Howe addressed those questions ahead of the trip to Aston Villa on Saturday in the FA Cup.

“Yeah, possibly,” Howe said. “I think with Bruno the other night, I don't think there was any pre-injury. Obviously, at that stage of the game, he was getting fatigued.

“Maybe on a normal situation with a full bench, we would maybe have taken him off before that moment. But we didn't. We were run out of midfielders, so he stayed on the pitch and unfortunately got injured.”

Newcastle United face Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening (5:45pm kick-off).

Eddie Howe’s side go into the game on the back of a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

While a positive result, The Magpies were hit with a fresh injury blow to captain Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian hobbled off with a suspected hamstring issue at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, rendering him a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Villa Park.

Lewis Miley has also missed the last four matches with a leg injury while Joelinton has missed the last five due to a groin issue.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Birmingham, Howe provided an update on the midfield trio.

NUFC injury latest

“With Lewy, we're waiting sort of day by day,” Howe said. “He's got a sort of a dead leg. So he got a bad knock to his thigh. I think there's a little bit of muscle damage on the knock.

“So sort of having scans on it sort of every few days to see how that is. We don't think it's going to be long-term. Hopefully, he'll be back pretty quickly. So let's wait and see on that one.

“With Bruno, we're awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury.

“Joelinton is doing really well. I don't think he'll make this game, but he's not going to be too far away beyond this game. So he's desperate to be back involved as he normally is, but that's a great sign for us.

“That means he's feeling good about his body and he's very positive.”

It means Miley is likely to miss his fifth game for Newcastle while it’s six games out for Joelinton since picking up his groin injury in the league match against Villa last month.

Eddie Howe on Aston Villa

Newcastle will be hoping to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup against one of the top performers in the Premier League so far this season.

It's a tough draw and I think whenever you're away from home, especially with the run that we're on away from home in terms of the consecutive fixtures, I wouldn't say we think too deeply about it in the moment,” Howe added.

“You absorb it, you take it in, you go, well, that's not ideal and then you quickly move on and go, well, we've got to do it. That's where we are.

“The more sympathy for the supporters who then, as you say, have to make all the sacrifices and the travel arrangements to get to Birmingham for the game.

“Now our job is to make all that travel and all that disruption to their lives and the cost worthwhile and that's what we're trying to do.”

Howe continued: “We are here to try and win [the FA Cup]. I've said so many times we loved last year in the Carabao Cup and what that meant to everybody, what that meant to us, the experience we went through to win the competition and we'd love to do it in any other way that we can.

“If that's the FA Cup, then that would be a great opportunity for us. We look at tomorrow as just an opportunity to win this game that's in front of us. We've then got, of course, a long travel midweek back into the Champions League, but we'll worry about that when we get there. All focus and all eyes are on this game.”

Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben sent Eddie Howe a clear message on social media following Newcastle United’s win over Spurs.

Newcastle United returned from the capital with three points in the bag after a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night. The clash between Newcastle and Spurs was one fought between two teams that had disappointed this season, with the three points on offer a very precious reward for whoever could overcome their opponents.

Thanks to goals from Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey, it would ultimately be the Magpies that took home the points as they left their opponents mired in a potential relegation battle. Newcastle, meanwhile, ended the night in the top half of the table.

Howe made some bold calls on Tuesday night, making four changes including naming a front three that didn’t include either of the club’s big money summer striker signings. That choice was a risk, particularly with the form that the team were in heading to north London, but his selection decisions were vindicated almost immediately as the Magpies put in a dominant 45 minute display in the first-half.

Spurs may have come back into the game in the second half, but Jacob Ramsey’s winning goal was the least that Howe’s side deserved and ensured that, for just the third time this season, they would leave a Premier League away game with three points in the bag. That win was a huge one for not just their league position, but also for Howe who had come under some criticism in recent weeks.

Newcastle United were booed off at St James’ Park following their loss to Brentford on Saturday evening, with Howe facing some tough questions in the wake of that defeat and ahead of their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, after a fist pumping celebration in-front of the away end on Tuesday night, it’s clear that Howe retains the support of the travelling crowd and, after a tweet from Jamie Reuben, it’s also clear he retains the support of the club’s ownership.

Reuben took to X post-match to post a photo of Howe celebrating at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium alongside: ‘♥ @NUFC’.

Eddie Howe makes honest Newcastle United future admission

Speaking to the media ahead of their midweek trip to the capital, Howe was asked if he does have any doubts that he is the right person to take the club forward.

“No, there's no doubt in my mind,” he responded. “That's why I'm sat here. If there was, then I wouldn't be, because as I said, the club's the most important thing.

“So I'd never put myself before the club if I didn't think I was the correct man to take the team forward and I could give the players what they need, then I would step aside and let someone else do it.”

Howe and his team have a few days to recover from that win before they play once again on the road, this time against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. That match takes place on Saturday 14 February and will kick-off at 5:45pm at Villa Park.

Newcastle United secured just their third Premier League away win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Eddie Howe’s side went ahead just before half-time when Malick Thiaw poked home a loose ball in the box to give his side a deserved lead. Just moments prior to that goal, it appeared that Joe Willock had given the visitors the lead, but for VAR to chalk off that goal for the tightest of offside calls.

Newcastle United headed into the break ahead, but were pegged back against the run of play by Spurs less than 20 minutes into the second half when Archie Gray netted from a corner. Thomas Frank’s side, though, were level for just four minutes before Jacob Ramsey scored what turned out to be the winning goal with a lovely left-footed finish past Guglielmo Vicario.

That goal was Ramsey’s first for Newcastle United following his move from Aston Villa in the summer and comes just days before the Magpies face his former employers in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. Injury issues and the form of players around him have prevented Ramsey from being a regular at St James’ Park, but his form in recent weeks may make him undroppable in Howe’s starting XI.

Reflecting on the win against Spurs, Ramsey, who was named as player of the match, told TNT Sports of the demands being placed on him by his new head coach: “Yeah, it's been a while. I've been playing in different positions and today I was playing a little bit higher up and the manager has demanded that I need to get my numbers up and thankfully I got my goal today.

“I knew I was in the box and when I played a one-two with Gordon. It was instinctive really. Left foot, nice finish.

“I got injured in my first start, out for two months. I needed to build my fitness and then I was in and then out of the team.

I'm feeling good, feeling fit. I just want to stay in the team, keep scoring goals, keep getting assists and helping the team out.”

Eddie Howe reacts to Jacob Ramsey’s performance v Spurs

Ramsey’s celebrations after the ball hit the back of the Spurs goal demonstrated just how much emotion had been built-up and subsequently released by the midfielder. Speaking post-match, Howe revealed his delight in not only Ramsey’s goal, but his overall play throughout the night.

“Really good goal,” United’s head coach said. “I mean, he's such a good technical player and I thought you saw that.

“I thought the two number eights today for us, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey, were excellent today. Physically really good.

“I thought we controlled the first half in part due to them and Bruno's performance. So I was really happy and delighted he scored, because I think he needed that sort of recognition because his recent performances have been very good.”

As mentioned, Howe and his players are back in action on Saturday when they face Aston Villa at Villa Park in the FA Cup.

Newcastle United won 2-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur - here are the player ratings from the match.

Eddie Howe made four changes to his side after the 3-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday as Newcastle looked to end a run of three straight defeats.

Anthony Gordon came straight back into the side following a hamstring injury, leading the line in place of Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. Anthony Elanga, Dan Burn and Jacob Ramsey also came into the side for Jacob Murphy, Lewis Hall and Dan Burn.

Spurs have also been going through a rough spell themselves as they eyed their first Premier League win of 2026 and only their third home win in the Premier League all season.

Newcastle thought they’d taken the lead just before half-time as Joe Willock broke away and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, only for VAR to intervene and rule it out.

But The Magpies quickly bounced back from the setback with Malick Thiaw pouncing to score his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0 just before half-time.

Despite Newcastle’s dominance, Spurs grabbed an equaliser midway through the second half as Archie Gray turned the ball in from close range to make it 1-1.

But Spurs didn’t stay level long as Newcastle went back in front moments later with Jacob Ramsey starting and finishing an attack to grab his first goal for the club with a tidy finish.

And that proved to be the winner as Newcastle held out for their third away win of the Premier League season.

Here are the Newcastle United player ratings from the match...

Nick Pope - 6

Had nothing to do in the first half but was finally called into action in the 54th minute to parry a Pape Matar Sarr effort clear.

Kieran Trippier - 7

Played some clever passes down the right and got stuck in. An improved display.

Malick Thiaw - 8

A comfortable evening so far and read things well before giving the side the lead with a good header and reactive finish on the rebound.

Sven Botman - 8

Made a few good blocks and challenges while also keeping his composure on the ball and distributing it well. Made a brilliant challenge just before half-time.

Dan Burn - 6

Deployed at left-back on his return to the starting line-up. Looked under threat of being exposed defensively but made a couple of good tackles to keep the home side at bay. Booked.

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Bruno Guimaraes - 7

Saw plenty of the ball and helped Newcastle control the game in the middle of the park. Took a knock late on and was forced off.

Joe Willock - 7

Dragged a shot narrowly wide from 20 yards inside the opening 10 minutes. Had a couple of bright moments but lacked ruthlessness in the final third until a brilliant strike just before half-time which he was unfortunate to have ruled out. Then played a role in Thiaw’s goal moments later with a great cross. Lost a bit of composure in the second half and started to gift Spurs possession as he faded.

Jacob Ramsey - 8

Saw a shot deflect over off Micky van de Ven. Came close again from the edge of the box just before the half-hour mark. Volleyed another deflected effort wide early in the second half before putting Newcastle back in front with a tidy finish from an attack he effectively started. A well-deserved first goal for the club.

Anthony Elanga - 7

Put three good balls into the box early on, but they came to nothing. Put another low cross in for Harvey Barnes but it was easily dealt with. Lively in the first half but less involved in the second.

Harvey Barnes - 6

Flicked Elanga’s low cross goalwards, but it was straight at Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs goal. Got into some decent areas and covered defensively when needed but also a little clumsy in possession.

Anthony Gordon - 7

Straight back into the starting line-up after missing Saturday’s match. Led the line but barely had a touch in the first half. Played an important role in Newcastle’s second goal, assisting Ramsey. Blasted an effort wide from 25 yards shortly after.

Substitutes

Jacob Murphy - 5

Newcastle United are looking to bounce back from three consecutive Premier League defeats when they face Tottenham Hotspur away on Tuesday evening (7:30pm kick-off).

The Magpies have won just two away games in the Premier League this season while their opponents Spurs have won just two at home.

Ahead of the match, Newcastle had two major injury doubts and several players already ruled out.

Defenders Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth remain out with longer-term problems while Anthony Gordon and Lewis Miley were injury doubts ahead of the trip to Spurs.

NUFC midfielder ruled out v Spurs

Brazilian midfielder Joelinton will also miss the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it’s the fifth game he has missed after suffering a groin injury against Aston Villa.

Providing an update on his squad fitness ahead of the trip to London, head coach Eddie Howe said: “Joelinton won't make the game.”

The 29-year-old was given an initial three-week injury recovery timeframe, which if everything has gone according to plan, would put him in contention for the trip to Qarabag next week. But Howe’s latest time-frame update on Joelinton’s recovery was notably more vague as he claimed the player would be out for ‘weeks rather than months’.

Discussing Miley and Gordon, Howe said on Monday: “[Miley] got a nasty bang to his leg, so it was like a sort of a dead leg that's dragged on a little bit longer than we thought. So we'll see how he is.

“Gordon we'll make a check on and see how he's progressing. Hopefully a big improvement in him.”

NUFC team news v Spurs leaked

In addition to Joelinton, Livramento, Schar and Krafth, Miley also misses out due to his leg issue. It’s understood the 19-year-old has suffered a setback in his recovery and will also miss Saturday’s FA Cup trip to Aston Villa.

But there was more positive news on Anthony Gordon as he returns to the matchday squad against Spurs. The winger has been named up front, having missed Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Brentford due to a hamstring injury suffered at Manchester City last week.

NUFC starting XI v Spurs

Howe made four changes from Saturday’s defeat with Jacob Ramsey coming in for Sandro Tonali, Anthony Elanga coming in for Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon replacing Yoane Wissa and Dan Burn coming into the starting line-up in place of Lewis Hall.

Starting XI: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Guimaraes, Willock, Ramsey; Elanga, Barnes, Gordon

Subs: Ramsdale, Hall, Tonali, Wissa, Osula, J.Murphy, Woltemade, A.Murphy, Shahar

Newcastle United travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday in a fixture that has seen plenty of shared talent over the years.

Right now, Kieran Trippier is one of Newcastle’s most prominent stars and has made 145 appearances for the club across all competitions, while he played 114 times for Tottenham between 2015 and 2019, reaching a Champions League final. But which other players have donned both jerseys over the years? Here are 10 of the biggest names, as well as a host of honourable mentions.

Jonathan Woodgate will always remain one of the biggest ‘what ifs’ of English football. Supremely talented, the centre-back just could not stay fit enough to fulfil his considerable potential.

Newcastle paid a considerable £9million to sign Woodgate from Leeds United in January 2003, and quickly became a fan favourite during his first half-season, which included doing a job on then-Marseille striker Didier Drogba during a Uefa Cup semi-final first leg clash. Unfortunately, injury ended his campaign and forced him out of the second leg, which Newcastle lost 2-0, and fitness problems would follow him into the next campaign, limiting him to 27 games in all competitions and just 18 in the Premier League.

That didn’t stop Real Madrid from making a shock move for him in the summer of 2004, but it took until September 2005 for Woodgate to finally make his debut. That was a famously disastrous affair against Athletic Club in which he scored an own goal and was sent off, and he lasted just 14 games with Los Blancos before returning to England with hometown club Middlesbrough.

That proved to be one of the best spells of his career, and he proved so effective over his 18 months at the Riverside Stadium that Tottenham came calling in January 2007. Woodgate initially stayed fit and helped Spurs win the EFL Cup, but injuries eventually reared their ugly heads again, and his career faded out with spells at Stoke and back at Boro. Just eight caps for England seems a crime for a player of this potential.

Moussa Sissoko showed huge potential during his three-and-a-half years at Newcastle. The Frenchman was part of the Magpies side that was relegated in 2015/16, after which he joined Tottenham, despite looking on the verge of signing for Everton.

At Spurs, he was initially viewed as a very expensive flop, but after two years in North London, the midfielder turned himself around and became a powerhouse in a side that reached Champions League and EFL Cup finals. The 71-time France international is still playing and was recently at Watford in his second spell at the club, broken up by some time back in his homeland with Nantes.

Join the Gazette’s free NUFC newsletter to follow the latest headlines and updates from the PL and Champions League

Sol Campbell should be a Spurs legend, having played 315 times for the club in the 1990s and early 2000s, winning a League Cup title along the way. However, he then made that infamous move across North London, and instead became an Arsenal legend, winning two league titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners - including as part of the ‘Invincibles’ - while reaching a Champions League final.

At the end of his career, the 73-time England international made eight appearances for Newcastle during the 2010/11 season, having rejected a two-year contract from Celtic. Unfortunately, his time on Tyneside was largely underwhelming and disrupted by injuries.

"That was definitely an anti-climax to finish at Newcastle because the end of it was not nice at all,” Campbell recalled of his Newcastle spell. “The whole scenario of it wasn't at all nice for me. It wasn't a pleasant experience for me, back end of the season. I could have played on."

Stephen Carr was one of Tottenham’s most consistent players during the first decade of the Premier League, almost singlehandedly holding down the right-back spot and playing alongside Campbell in that League Cup-winning side.

The Republic of Ireland international eventually left for Newcastle in 2004 and lasted four years at St. James’ Park. Despite suffering from knee injuries, Carr was generally reliable for Newcastle as they remained stable in the Premier League. Carr left in 2008 and ended his career with Birmingham City, helping them win the League Cup in 2011 despite suffering relegation that season - a fate endured by the Magpies in the season following his departure.

We’re bending the rules a little for this entry. Ossie Ardiles is best remembered for his time at Tottenham Hotspur between 1978 and 1988, becoming one of the very first foreign stars to taste success in England. The Argentine World Cup winner lifted two FA Cups and a Uefa Cup with the Lilywhites, with the midfielder netting 25 goals in 299 appearances across all competitions.

Ardiles embarked on a long managerial career after hanging up his boots. His time in the dugout included a 52-game spell at Newcastle between 1991 and 1992, but he was sacked after the Magpies slumped to the bottom of the second division. He then returned to Tottenham as manager in 1993 after a happier spell at West Brom, but was equally unsuccessful at White Hart Lane, languishing in the bottom half, while Spurs were hit with fines, points deductions and a one-year FA Cup ban due to financial irregularities.

It’s hard for a player to earn legendary status at two Premier League clubs. And it’s even harder for someone to earn iconic status throughout the entire country. But that’s Paul Gascoigne for you. His career needs no introduction or narrative. From his tears to that goal against Scotland, alongside league titles in Glasgow and time in Serie A with Lazio, you know it all already.

Of course, it all started for Gazza at his boyhood club Newcastle United, where he scored 25 goals in 104 appearances, before joining Tottenham in 1988. Gascoigne scored another 33 goals in 112 games for Spurs between then and 1992, winning the FA Cup along the way.

The ultimate flawed hero of English football.

Les Ferdinand was one of the most feared goalscoring powerhouses of the early Premier League era, and nowhere was he more prolific than during his two years at Newcastle United between 1995 and 1997. Playing alongside the likes of David Ginola, Alan Shearer and Tino Asprilla at various points during his time on Tyneside, Ferdinand netted an astonishing 50 goals in 84 appearances for the Magpies, helping them finish second only to Manchester United twice in a row.

Ferdinand then went on to spend five-and-a-half years at Tottenham and while he wasn’t quite as prolific, he still scored 39 goals in 149 appearances, helping Spurs win the 1999 League Cup final against Leicester.

Chris Waddle walked the path of emerging from Newcastle and moving to Tottenham years before Gascoigne did so. The midfielder enjoyed most of his Newcastle success in the Second Division, but did net 13 goals in 36 First Division appearances during the 1984/85 campaign, which is what prompted Spurs to pay £590,000 for his services that summer.

Waddle scored 42 goals in 173 games for Spurs and helped them reach the 1987 FA Cup final, where they lost to Coventry City, before going on to win league titles and reach a European Cup final with French giants Marseille. The 62-time England international returned to England with Sheffield Wednesday in 1992, before winding down his career with forgettable spells at Falkirk, Bradford City, Sunderland, Burnley and Torquay United.

David Ginola was one of the Premier League’s ultimate entertainers during its first decade, bringing a level of excitement and flair rarely seen in English football to that point. The Frenchman was one of the best dribblers in the country, and used his talents to notch 29 goals for Newcastle and Spurs combined between 1995 and 2000, playing over 200 times for the two clubs and winning the League Cup with the latter.

Ginola ended his career with far less memorable spells at Aston Villa and Everton, but he lit up St. James’ Park and White Hart Lane.

Scott Parker currently finds himself beleaguered as manager of relegation-bound Burnley right now, but as a player, he was one of the Premier League’s most effective combative midfielders of his era. Parker joined Newcastle from Chelsea in 2005 and was the defensive screen in front of the backline in a side that finished seventh and 13th. After a productive four-year stay at West Ham which unfortunately ended in relegation, Parker then moved to Spurs in 2011, playing 63 times in two years, helping them qualify for the Champions League along the way. The 18-time England international ended his career with Fulham, who he also managed between 2019 and 2021.

Honourable mentions: Danny Rose, Sebastien Bassong, DeAndre Yedlin, Jermaine Jenas, Wayne Routledge, Andros Townsend, Nabil Bentaleb, Louis Saha.

Newcastle United travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday in a battle between two sides desperate for a result.

The Magpies head south off the back of a 3-2 defeat at home to Brentford at the weekend, meaning they’ve now lost their last three Premier League matches and won one of their last nine across all competitions. Eddie Howe’s men have slumped to 12th in the table in the process, and now trail the top four by 11 points.

That said, the situation is just as bad for Spurs, who have won just two of their last 16 Premier League matches and have taken four points from their last seven, including a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday. It’s a must-win game for both sides, so how can you watch it live, and what is the latest team news?

Tottenham vs Newcastle team news

It’s little wonder Thomas Frank has struggled to get a tune out of Tottenham, given the wretched injury problems he’s had to contend with. James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus and Ben Davies all remain sidelined long-term, while Richarlison won’t be back until next month.

Frank will also have to continue on without Dejan Kulusevski, Pedro Porro and Kevin Danso until the end of February, while Cristian Romero was sent off against Man Utd and will be suspended here. Destiny Udogie is also set to miss four or five weeks after limping off in that match. Spurs should have one small boost in the form of Djed Spence, who is likely to return to the squad following a calf problem.

That said, Newcastle’s treatment table hasn’t exactly been quiet of late. The Magpies will definitely be without Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento, Joelinton and Emil Krafth for this game. What’s more, Howe will also be sweating on the fitness of Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon, who are major doubts with knee and hamstring injuries, respectively.

Tottenham predicted XI: Vicario; Gray, Dragusin, Van de Ven, Souza; Gallagher, Palhinha, Sarr; Simons, Solanke, Kolo Muani.

Newcastle predicted XI: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Ramsey; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes.
