A late equaliser by Brighton and Hove Albion substitute Georginio Rutter salvaged a point and left Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League relegation zone.

The stoppage time leveller stunned Spurs at the end of a pulsating match, taking the shine off Roberto De Zerbi’s home debut.

The former Albion boss looked set to end his new side’s 15-match winless run in the top flight after Xavi Simons produced a superb 77th-minute strike to spark wild celebrations.

The hosts had gone ahead after 39 minutes when Xavi laid on the opener for Pedro Porro. It was cancelled out by Kaoru Mitoma in first-half stoppage-time.

As the north London side’s fans geared up to celebrate, scenes of jubilation turned to disbelief when Kevin Danso lost possession in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time. Rutter curled home to ensure the spoils were shared.

The 2-2 draw left Tottenham stuck in the bottom three for another week, with only five matches left to stave off the club’s first relegation since 1977.

Spurs had spent a whole week in the relegation zone but there was an air of positivity in N17 with James Maddison surprisingly named in the match-day squad for the first time this season and Xavi back in the starting line up.

A sea of white flags welcomed the teams before De Zerbi’s exchanged pleasantries with his old players, followed by numerous warnings from fourth official Ben Toner for walking on to the pitch.

Clear-cut action was limited but Tottenham had penalty appeals waved away in the 10th minute after Destiny Udogie tangled with Yankuba Minteh.

Diego Gomez limped off for the visitors soon after before Xavi went close with a low effort deflected wide.

Brighton enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure afterwards and Spurs stand-in captain Micky van de Ven smashed a clearance against the post to deny Danny Welbeck after a dangerous Jack Hinshelwood knockdown before Antonin Kinsky saved Welbeck’s header.

After Tottenham survived, De Zerbi watched the first goal of his era come from Porro. Xavi was key, with a wonderful clipped cross and Porro stole in to head over Bart Verbruggen.

Two minutes later and it should have been 2-0 when Dominic Solanke passed into Xavi who cut inside Ferdi Kadioglu but curled the ball against the post from eight yards – and Porro’s follow-up was tipped over by Verbruggen.

It would prove costly as Mitoma lashed home on the volley in supreme fashion from an equally impressive Pascal Gross cross.

Hinshelwood headed wide before half-time and Brighton picked up where they left off after the break with Danso forced to clear ahead of Welbeck and then block an effort by Mitoma.

De Zerbi received a caution soon after for going down the touchline again before a raft of substitutes sparked a grand finale.

Joao Palhinha went close after his introduction before Lucas Bergvall marked his entrance with a key role in Xavi’s goal.

Bergvall won back possession from Jan Paul van Hecke and played in Xavi who made space against Mats Wieffer and curled sumptuously beyond Verbruggen.

Wild scenes in front of the South Stand were followed by a bout of cramp for Xavi before the late twist in the tale.

Danso waited too long on the ball inside the area and Van Hecke stole in and teed up Rutter to break Tottenham hearts and prevent the hosts moving out of the bottom three.

Fabian Hürzeler has named an unchanged Brighton and Hove Albion side to face Tottenham Hotspur in north London today (Saturday 18 April).

It will be former Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi’s first home game in charge and he plans to field former Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma in his starting line up.

Xavi Simons is down to start alongside him with Randal Kolo Muani – behind Dominic Solanke. Rodrigo Bentancur also returns to midfield while Cristian Romero is out injured.

Danny Welbeck once again skippers Brighton in the absence of suspended club captain Lewis Dunk.

Mats Wieffer, who scored both goals in the 2-0 win at Burnley last weekend, keeps his place in a defence that includes Jan Paul van Hecke, Ferdi Kadioglu and Olivier Boscagli, with Bart Vergruggen in goal.

Albion’s midfield is made up of Pascal Gross and Yasin Ayari, Yankuba Minteh, Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez.

On the bench, Hürzeler has named Kaoru Mitoma, Carlos Baleba, Georginio Rutter, Maxim De Cuyper, Joel Veltman and Charalampos Kostoulas as well as Julio Igor, Matt O’Riley and reserve keeper Jason Steele.

Tottenham sit 18th in the Premier League heading into today’s clash in north London which Fabian Hürzeler puts down to the intensity of the Premier League.

He said: “I think everyone is a little bit surprised but on the other side it’s very important to understand how ruthless the Premier League can be, how tight the Premier League is.

“You need to be on your highest level every weekend and we experienced a bad run in the season. If you’re not doing the right behaviours on a daily basis then you have no chance at the weekend.

“It’s maybe a little surprise for everyone. But it also shows how intense and ruthless the Premier League can be.”

Albion start the match – due to kick off at 5.30pm – in 10th place after Bournemouth beat Newcastle United 2-1 away this afternoon.

With 46 points from 32 games, the Seagulls are perched just two points behind Chelsea in sixth and still in contention for a European place.

Brighton and Hove Albion pose tough test for De Zerbi

Description

Brighton and Hove Albion present former head coach Roberto De Zerbi with a tough test in his home match since taking charge of Tottenham Hotspur.

Albion will be without veteran midfielder James Milner who remains unavailable for the trip to relegation-threatened Spurs tomorrow (Saturday 18 April).

Milner missed the 2-0 victory at Burnley last weekend with what boss Fabian Hürzeler described as a “small issue” and is still ruled out.

Brighton have no fresh injury problems, however, and have recovered their form, with five wins in their past six games.

Hürzeler said: “James will still be out but he’s getting close. Besides that, everything is fine.”

The Albion head coach is to lock horns with the new Tottenham boss De Zerbi for the first time since he replaced the Italian at Amex Stadium in 2024.

De Zerbi is a popular figure on the south coast having steered Brighton to their highest-ever Premier League finish of sixth in 2023.

He also masterminded the club’s FA Cup run to the semi-finals in the same season.

Having left for Marseille, De Zerbi now faces the challenge of keeping Spurs in the top flight.

Hürzeler said: “Roberto deserves praise because he had a huge impact on this club and had great achievements with the players.

“He reached Europe for the first time so he deserves this praise.

“On the other side, when the whistle goes, it’s a game between Brighton and Tottenham.

“We are there to win this game and that’s our focus.”

De Zerbi has had one bit of good news as Rodrigo Bentancur returned to training.

The Uruguay midfielder had been on Spurs’ lengthy casualty list since suffering a hamstring injury in January.

Bentancur now looks set to provide a timely boost for new De Zerbi as they look to stave off the drop.

Spurs slipped into the relegation zone after the 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in De Zerbi’s first game in charge and now have six matches left to save themselves.

They also lost captain Cristian Romero to a season-ending knee injury at the Stadium of Light while Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert, Ben Davies, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski remain long-term absentees.

De Zerbi will be hoping that Bentancur will be fit enough to be included in the squad for the Seagulls’ visit.

The 28-year-old was a regular starter under previous boss Thomas Frank, making 28 appearances in all competitions this season before injury struck.

Brighton and Hove Albion 2 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Brighton and Hove Albion had to share the spoils after taking a two-goal lead at home to Tottenham Hotspur at the Amex this afternoon (Saturday 20 September).

Yankuba Minteh opened the scoring after eight minutes and just after the half-hour Yasin Ayari extended Brighton’s lead.

But Richarlison pulled one back moments before the break and late in the second half the visitors drew level thanks to an own goal from Jan Paul van Hecke.

Although Spurs were behind for most of the match, they dominated the game, especially in the second half.

And it was against the run of play when Albion opened the scoring to the delight of the home fans at Falmer.

Georginio Rutter passed to Minteh who dummied Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario before dinking the ball over him.

Ayari added a second on 31 minutes with a cracking shot from just outside the box.

It looked as though the hosts might take a 2-0 lead into the interval but Mohammed Kudus picked out Richarlison with a terrific pass and the Brazilian buried it from close range.

When the teams were back on the pitch after the break, the north London side were in battling form and almost straight away Kudus was booked by referee Chris Kavanagh.

But it took until the 82nd minute before the scores were levelled when Kudus again played the ball into the Brighton area where Van Hecke deflected it in.

Minutes later, it looked as though Spurs could have a penalty when Xavi Simons went down in the box.

The ref initially waved play on but, shortly after, Albion hearts sank when he made the sign for the video assistant referee. On this occasion the VAR review went Albion’s way.

And when the final whistle came, it was something of a relief to have emerged with a point after what seemed like relentless pressure despite the early prospect of taking all three.

Spurs leapfrog Arsenal into second place behind Liverpool although the Gunners play their game in hand tomorrow at home to Manchester City.

Brighton are in 13th, with five points from five games. They are due to play League One side Barnsley in the third round of the League Cup at 7.45pm on Tuesday (23 September).

Next Saturday (27 September) at 3pm, Albion face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the league.
