The EFL have confirmed when the draw for the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup will take place. Newcastle United, who have featured in three-successive final eights of the Carabao Cup, take on Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park tonight aiming to book their place in the quarter finals of the competition they won back in March at Wembley.

The Magpies defeated League Two side Bradford City last month to progress to Round Four, whilst Spurs overcame the challenge of Doncaster Rovers 3-0. Thomas Frank’s side are currently unbeaten away from home this season in all competitions, whilst Newcastle have won three-straight matches at St James’ Park against Nottingham Forest, Benfica and Fulham.

When is the Carabao Cup quarter final draw?

The Carabao Cup quarter final draw will take place following the conclusion of Newcastle United’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur. The draw will be broadcast live on Sky Sports on Sky Sports Main Event.

The EFL have confirmed that Jamie Redknapp and Jobi McAnuff will complete the draw alongside presenter Mark Chapman. It is likely that the draw will be completed around 10:30pm.

If Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur ends in a draw after 90 minutes, then the tie will head straight to a penalty shootout. Extra-time is not played in the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies began their 2024/25 Carabao Cup winning campaign with a penalty shootout win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in August last year. Sean Longstaff, now at Leeds United, netted the winning spot-kick on that day.

Carabao Cup quarter final confirmed clubs

Whilst Newcastle United and Spurs will battle it out tonight for one spot in the last-eight of the Carabao Cup, three teams booked their place in that draw last night. League One Cardiff City are the lowest ranked side in the final eight after they beat Championship side Wrexham 2-1.

Brentford overcame the challenge of Grimsby Town, who knocked Manchester United out of the competition in August, with ease as they hit five at Blundell Park. Marco Silva’s Fulham also booked themselves a place in tonight’s draw, although they had to rely on a penalty shootout to beat Wycombe Wanderers.

Elsewhere tonight, there are five matches to decide the final five teams in the quarter final draw. Along with Newcastle’s clash with Spurs, last season’s runners-up Liverpool host Crystal Palace.

The Eagles ended Liverpool’s 100% start to the season and also defeated them in the Community Shield at Wembley in August. An all Premier League tie at the Emirates Stadium sees Premier League leaders Arsenal take on Brighton and Hove Albion.

Wolves, who are winless in the league, take on Chelsea at Molineux. Vitor Pereira’s side have beaten top-flight opponents in both rounds of the Carabao Cup to date knocking out West Ham and Everton in the process.

The final of tonight’s quintet of matches sees Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City head to south Wales to face Swansea City. All of those games will kick-off at 7:45pm with Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur starting 15 minutes later at 8pm.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur square-off tonight at St James’ Park with a place in the Carabao Cup quarter final on the line.

Whilst both managers will be desperate to progress in the competition, Eddie Howe and Thomas Frank have a number of injury issues to deal with ahead of tonight’s game, with Spurs potentially missing eight first-team players.

Here, we take a look at the latest injury news from both camps ahead of Newcastle United’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur injury news v Newcastle United

Cristian Romero - out

Romero has not featured in any of Spurs’ last three matches and is very unlikely to be risked for tonight’s game. Speaking about the defender ahead of their trip to Everton at the weekend, Frank said: “Cuti was just out running on the grass with the performance guys.

“So, positive, progressing, but no time frame. I don't expect it to be a longer one.”

Destiny Udogie - out

Udogie suffered a knee injury whilst on international duty with Italy earlier this month. He hasn’t featured for Spurs since picking up that injury and is still a game or two away from returning to action.

“Destiny is not on the grass yet, but still progressing.” Frank said. “Again, not a longer one.”

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Dominic Solanke - out

Solanke enjoys a very good goalscoring record against Newcastle United and netted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January during the last meeting between the sides. However, the former Bournemouth man won’t feature tonight despite his manager confirming that his recovery from injury has ‘stepped up’ in recent days.

James Maddison - out

Maddison has been ruled-out for the majority, if not all, of the season after suffering an ACL injury in pre-season. The former Leicester City man picked up the injury during Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in South Korea in August.

Dejan Kulusevski - out

Kulusevski hasn’t featured for Spurs since their Europa League final win over Manchester United in May. The Swedish international winger is expected to be out until the end of November and Frank is hopeful of having him available for selection during the busy festive period of matches.

“He's a key, key player for us. Instead of putting an exact month on [his return]. I just want him back as quick as possible.

“I know the medical team and Dejan are working very hard on that. It's not tomorrow, hopefully not too far away.”

Radu Dragusin - out

Dragusin has been out since March with an ACL injury. He will not feature at St James’ Park tonight.

Ben Davies - out

Davies has been sidelined with an ankle injury and won’t feature on Tyneside.

Yves Bissouma - out

Bissouma picked up an ankle injury whilst on international duty with Mali earlier this month. He won’t feature on Tyneside tonight.

On Bissouma’s injury, Frank said: “Biss, unfortunately, had a situation with the national team, I think everyone saw that, so he got a ligament injury to his ankle that will keep him out for weeks.”

Newcastle United injury news v Tottenham Hotspur

Lewis Hall - out

Howe has confirmed that tonight’s game will come too soon for Hall to be involved. The former Chelsea defender has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and has not been seen in action since their win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League earlier this month.

Yoane Wissa - out

A PCL injury has kept Wissa sidelined since the beginning of September. There is hope he can feature before the November international break, although a return after that international period seems most likely for him.

“I don't know, it's very difficult for me to give a game for you,” Howe said when asked about a possible return date for Wissa.

“Yoane’s in a different boat to the other two [Hall and Livramento] because he's coming from further back fitness-wise. He's been out longer.

“Lewis's return will be quite quick, in the sense that once he's fit and available, he'll be back involved with the group. Same with Tino, really. Yoane, he's still on track but we need to make sure that he's gone through a mini pre-season with us as well.”

Tino Livramento - out

A knee injury has kept Livramento sidelined since the end of September. The defender has returned to work on grass but isn’t expected back in action until after next month’s international break.

On Livramento’s progress, Howe said on Tuesday: “I'd say he's still on track. I think the two-week international break dictates that he won't be able to bring that forward by two weeks.

“I think we're looking at the Manchester City game for him as a pencilled-in date for hopefully that he can be available for. But he's doing well. He feels really good.

“There's no adverse reaction to his injury. So, positive signs for Tino and for Lewis and for Yoane at the minute. They're all on track for their respective returns.”

Harrison Ashby - out

Ashby has not been training with the first-team squad due to a thigh injury but no estimate has been given on his return date. The defender is yet to make his competitive debut for Newcastle after joining the club from West Ham in January 2023.

On the former Hammer, Howe said: “At the moment, Harrison [Ashby] is injured and he’s been injured for a period of time with a thigh injury so we’re waiting for him to be fit again.”

Sven Botman - doubt

A ‘nasty looking’ cut suffered by Botman on Saturday means he is a doubt to feature tonight. The Dutch defender was withdrawn after a collision with Sasa Lukic as he equalised for Fulham.

Fortunately for the player and club, Botman didn’t suffer a concussion. However, Howe put his participation in tonight’s game into doubt on Tuesday, stating: “As I said after the game [on Saturday] there’s no concussion. It was a cut, a nasty looking cut for Sven.

“He’s had it stapled together. He didn’t train yesterday [Monday] so we will see how he is.”

Eddie Howe revealed that there will be an element of rotation to his starting XI when Newcastle United face Tottenham Hotspur tonight, but is determined to see his side progress and continue their defence of the Carabao Cup.

Just four days on from their last-gasp win over Fulham in the Premier League, Howe’s side return to St James’ Park for another clash against top-flight opponents when Thomas Frank brings his Spurs side to Tyneside. The Magpies defeated Bradford City in the previous round of this competition but know they will have to be at their best to book their spot in a fourth-successive Carabao Cup quarter final.

An opportunity to impress Howe tonight awaits a section of Newcastle United’s squad ahead of their upcoming Premier League and Champions League matches. Here, we take a look at the Newcastle United starting XI that Howe could name for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur tonight:

Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur predicted XI

Aaron Ramsdale

Ramsdale’s only appearance so far this season came in the last round of this competition. Whilst Nick Pope has been in brilliant form this season, he could be rested for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

Emil Krafth

Krafth hasn’t started a game this season but Howe may look to rest Kieran Trippier tonight. If that is the case, then the Swedish international may be handed a start.

Fabian Schar

Schar looked very solid against Fulham at the weekend and with Sven Botman unlikely to be risked tonight could return to the starting XI.

Malick Thiaw

Thiaw has been brilliant since joining Newcastle United and may be asked to play alongside Schar against Spurs.

Dan Burn

Lewis Hall’s continued absence means that Burn could, once again, deputise at left-back.

Bruno Guimaraes

One school of thought suggests that Guimaraes may be rested tonight ahead of two important Premier League matches and a Champions League game. However, we’re predicting the Brazilian to start tonight in his favoured role.

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Sandro Tonali

Tonali was a substitute on Saturday as he recovered from illness. If he’s fully fit, he could regain a starting spot against Spurs.

Jacob Ramsey

Ramsey has yet to nail down a spot in Howe’s starting XI, but could be given that opportunity tonight. An impressive performance will certainly give his new head coach something to consider ahead of their upcoming matches.

Anthony Elanga

Elanga would love to grab a goal tonight and end his long run without one for his new club. Spurs will sit in and be hard to beat, but Elanga could pop up with a bit of magic that unlocks the defence.

Nick Woltemade

Whilst Howe was quick to praise Will Osula during his pre-match press conference, we’re predicting that Woltemade gets another start with Osula ready and primed to replace him from the bench if the German is afforded a chance to rest.

Harvey Barnes

Barnes came off the bench to score twice against Benfica and played a big role in their late win over Fulham. Could he be given a chance to impress from the off tonight?

Thomas Frank has admitted that he will rotate his starting XI when Tottenham Hotspur face Newcastle United at St James’ Park tomorrow night.

Spurs defeated Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday to move third in the Premier League table and extend their unbeaten record away from home under their new manager. Newcastle United, meanwhile, beat Fulham with a last-gasp winner at St James’ Park to record a third-straight win at home in all competitions.

Both clubs ended long trophy droughts last season and will be desperate to progress in this competition. However, both sides know they will have to be at their very best to secure their name in the hat for the Carabao Cup quarter final draw.

With domestic and European action to balance, though, it’s unlikely that either manager will name their strongest starting lineups and may look to their bench and fringe options.

Thomas Frank drops Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United team news hint

Tomorrow night’s game will be both sides’ fourth game since the conclusion of the October international break. Both teams have three more games, including a Champions League outing next week, left to play before international football again takes centre stage next month.

After their trip to St James’ Park, Spurs have games against Chelsea and Manchester United to play in the Premier League and a Champions League clash against FC Copenhagen to deal with before the November international break. The demands of those games, plus the four they have already played this month, means that Frank will be forced to use his squad and the Spurs boss has admitted that there will be an element of rotation to the starting XI he names on Tyneside tomorrow.

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Frank said: “That’s the challenge. It’s one game so there’s more at stake.

“I changed four from Monaco to Everton and three before that. Of course there’ll be rotation, playing every third or fourth day.

“If you want to compete over 60 games, you can’t play the same XI. So there’s a fine balance. That’s one of the beauties of being Head Coach, that’s all part of the good fun.”

Eddie Howe, the man in the opposing dugout to Frank tomorrow night, has also admitted that he will rotate his starting XI. Howe revealed on Tuesday that some of his squad would be given a chance to impress him against Spurs - whilst also reiterating his desire to retain the trophy they worked so hard to win last season.

“It’s an important decision I’ve got coming up for this game because we want to progress, this competition means a lot to us as current holders and we don’t want to give that up easily,” Howe said. “But I have to trust the squad as well.

“We have some very good players that need football and need the opportunity to show their talents and what they can bring to the squad. So I think there will be an element [of rotation] but I have to try and get the balance right.”

Eddie Howe has provided a major update on injuries ahead of Newcastle United’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Magpies continue their defence of the Carabao Cup with yet another tough test against Premier League opposition. Having beaten Bradford City in the last round at St James’ Park, Howe’s side once again get the benefit of home advantage against Tottenham Hotspur tonight, but face a side that are unbeaten away from home under Thomas Frank.

Howe’s side returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday with a last-gasp win over Fulham. Spurs, meanwhile, defeated Everton 3-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday as they moved up to third in the Premier League table.

Eddie Howe provides Newcastle United injury update

Speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s game, Howe addressed the injury issues affecting his squad. Sven Botman was substituted off after Fulham’s equaliser whilst Lewis Hall missed that game entirely through injury.

On the pair, Howe provided a mixed update on their expected return dates. On Botman, Howe confirmed that he hadn’t suffered concussion but revealed that there is doubt over whether he can participate against Spurs: “As I said after the game [on Saturday] there’s no concussion. It was a cut, a nasty looking cut for Sven.

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

“He’s had it stapled together. He didn’t train yesterday [Monday] so we will see how he is.”

There was hope, meanwhile, that Hall could be available sooner rather than later. With Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa certainly ruled-out of action, Howe was asked for an update on the former Chelsea man and whether he was the closest of the trio to returning having missed their last four matches in all competitions.

Howe, though, ruled-out the possibility of him featuring against Spurs: “He is the closest. This game will come too quickly for him. We will see how he is for West Ham.”

The clash with Spurs comes slap bang in the middle of a gruelling fixture schedule that sees Newcastle United have to balance league, European and cup action. With games against West Ham, Athletic Club and Brentford to play before the November international break, Howe has confirmed that he will consider rotating his squad for Wednesday’s game, whilst also ensuring that his side have the best possible chance of emerging victorious and avoiding an early exit.

Sky Sports will broadcast Wednesday night’s game in the United Kingdom. Kick-off between Frank and Howe’s sides at St James’ Park is at 8pm.

Thomas Frank has revealed that Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke and Cristian Romero are all making progress towards returning to action, but all three are still expected to miss the clash with Newcastle United on Wednesday night through injury.

Spurs travel to the north east sat third in the Premier League table aiming to dump out the reigning holders of the competition at the last-16 stage. However, Frank is likely to be without seven first-team players for that game with Romero, Solanke and Udogie among those that are not expected to feature.

Asked for an update on his selection options following their win over Everton on Sunday, Frank responded: “All good from the guys that played yesterday. Dom [Solanke] stepped forward, step by step. Cuti [Romero] on the pitch today, not a timeframe. Destiny [Udogie] on the pitch as well today. Three steps forward.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s key to victory v Newcastle United

Spurs’ win over Everton on Sunday ensured they became the first visiting team to take three points away from the Hill Dickinson Stadium - extending their unbeaten domestic record on the road in the process. That record will be tested at St James’ Park on Wednesday night against a Newcastle United side that have won three successive matches on home turf.

On Spurs’ record away from home this season, Frank added: “Sometimes it's a relatively small sample. Hopefully at the end of the year it's fantastic away and home.

“It's a team that's still finding each other, the way we're building we have 14 games with one bad performance against Bournemouth, second half against Wolves and second half against Monaco. In general we're building.”

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Tottenham’s first two goals on Merseyside on Sunday came from corner kicks as Spurs continued a growing trend of Premier League sides scoring from set-pieces. Frank’s Brentford side were renowned for their set-piece routines and successes and that is something he has brought with him to the north London club.

Frank, however, was keen to share the credit for their dead ball successes with his set-piece coach Andreas Georgson: “Andreas is doing a top job,” Frank said.

“The players are really committed to it. We need to be good in every aspects of the game but set pieces have created a third of all goals. So not to spend time on it, be super-focused on details, then defending and attacking those is a major strength.

“I haven't seen every game in every league. My feeling is that there are more long throws in general - that's a clear example - every manager wants to compete and it's about finding the small margins. The top clubs are raising the bar so that's probably the reason.

“You need to be good in all phases. In the first half yesterday we were very good playing out from the back and you need to be good in the middle of the pitch. A big part of it is being good at set pieces.”

Spurs’ clash with Newcastle United kicks-off at 8pm on Wednesday night. The game will be available to watch on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.

Tottenham Hotspur will be without seven first-team players for their clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday night as Thomas Frank is forced to deal with an injury crisis at the north London club.

Spurs moved up to third in the Premier League table following their comfortable victory over Everton on Sunday and will be eyeing a win on Wednesday night that would knock-out the holders of the Carabao Cup. Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have never fallen before the quarter-final stage of this competition and have beaten five of the traditional ‘big six’ clubs over the last three years - with Spurs the final club they haven’t faced-off against, and beaten, during Howe’s time at the club.

Frank’s side, though, will be a very tough nut to crack for the Magpies and they head to the north east with an unbeaten away record in domestic competitions this season. However, Frank will head to St James’ Park with a whole host of injury issues impacting his options.

Spurs, like their hosts on Wednesday night, have had to balance Champions League, Premier League and Carabao Cup action for the last two months. Frank’s side have games against Chelsea, FC Copenhagen and Manchester United to play before November’s international break.

Tottenham Hotspur injury news v Newcastle United

Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, it is expected that Frank will be without seven first-team players for their clash with Newcastle United. According to the Evening Standard, none of Cristian Romero, Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski or James Maddison are expected to be fit enough to feature against Howe’s side.

All of those seven players would be pushing for a start under Frank, however, according to that report, none will feature on Tyneside. Romero has missed their last three matches after suffering a hip injury and is not expected to take part on Wednesday night.

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Solanke, who enjoys a good goalscoring record against the Magpies during his time at both Bournemouth and Spurs, has featured just twice in the Premier League under Frank. Speaking about the striker ahead of his side’s trip to Merseyside, the Spurs boss said: “Dominic, positive, he's taking steps in the right direction every day.”

“[He] was on the grass again today on his own, but has now a sustainable amount of pitch session in him on his own, so it's progressing forward.”

Knee injuries will keep both Udogie and Dragusin out of Wednesday’s game. Udogie was injured whilst away with Italy earlier this month, whilst Dragusin has been sidelined for nine months after picking up an ACL injury and whilst he is slowly returning to training on the grass, is not expected to feature for a number of weeks.

Bissouma was also a casualty of an injury picked up on international duty whilst Kulusevski hasn’t featured since his side’s Europa League final victory over Manchester United in May.

Maddison, meanwhile, suffered an ACL injury during Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in South Korea in August. The former Leicester City man has been ruled-out for most, if not all, of the campaign with that injury.

Fresh from their 2-1 victory over Fulham in the Premier League, Newcastle United look to continue their defence of the Carabao Cup when they welcome Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur to St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe may look to rotate his team slightly for Spurs’ visit, although he and Newcastle United will be desperate to progress and book themselves a fourth-straight appearance in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Here, we take a look at the latest injury news affecting Newcastle United and when those sidelined players could be back in action.

Newcastle United injury news

Lewis Hall - hamstring injury

Hall had an outside chance of being involved in Saturday’s win over Fulham, but was instead left at home by his head coach. He could feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night if deemed fit enough by the medical department.

Estimated return date = 29/10/25 v Tottenham Hotspur (h)

Tino Livramento - knee injury

Livramento suffered a knee injury against Arsenal in September and after initial fears of a long-term injury were quashed, an eight week timescale on his return was pencilled in by the club. The good news for Livramento and the Magpies is that he has returned to work on the grass and whilst he still faces a few more weeks on the sidelines, there is hope that he can return to action just after the next international break.

Estimated return date = 22/11/25 v Manchester City (h)

Sven Botman - knock

Botman was substituted in the immediate aftermath of Fulham’s equaliser on Saturday. The Dutchman took a whack from eventual goalscorer Sasa Lukic and received treatment in the goalmouth before being replaced.

Howe revealed post-match that Botman had not suffered a concussion and that he should be available for selection against Spurs. Whether he is offered a chance to rest in that game remains to be seen.

Estimated return date = 29/10/25 v Tottenham Hotspur (h)

The Gazette has launched a new WhatsApp NUFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone. Simply click this link to join our NUFC WhatsApp channel.

Yoane Wissa - knee injury

Wissa has been sidelined with a PCL injury ever since his move from Brentford on deadline day. He is yet to feature for the Magpies and faces another couple of weeks on the sidelines.

Howe has admitted that even when Wissa is back fit, he will have to have a ‘six-week preseason’ to get him up to speed for Premier League action.

Wissa could feature before the next international break, although it is unlikely he will play a big role in any of those matches if he is able to finally be named in a matchday squad.

Estimated return date = 22/11/25 v Manchester City (h)

Harrison Ashby - thigh injury

Ashby has not been training with the first-team squad due to a thigh injury but no estimate has been given on his return date. The defender is yet to make his competitive debut for Newcastle after joining the club from West Ham in January 2023.

On the former Hammer, Howe said: “At the moment, Harrison [Ashby] is injured and he’s been injured for a period of time with a thigh injury so we’re waiting for him to be fit again.”

Estimated return date = TBC

Newcastle United have reportedly beaten off interest from Tottenham Hotspur to sign England youth international Josh Kenchington from Barnsley.

As revealed by the Daily Mail, Kenchington, dubbed the ‘next John Stones’ due to his affiliation with Barnsley and his preferred position as a centre back, will move to the north east as Newcastle United continue to transform their academy ranks. Kenchington is the latest in a number of players that Newcastle United have snapped up from academies around the United Kingdom and beyond as they aim to drag their academy system, so often passed over by former owners, to being able to compete with the very best in the country.

Kenchington has represented England at Under-15 level and was named as Barnsley’s academy player of the year at the end of last season. Kenchington was called-up to represent England Under-15’s for the first time in November 2024 and has represented them on four occasions in matches against Greece, Japan, Portugal and France.

Newcastle United academy focus

As mentioned, Kenchington’s signing comes amid a renewed effort by Newcastle United to strengthen their academy ranks and have it competing alongside some of the best in the country. The Magpies are looking to not only strengthen their ranks at Under-15 level, but also right up to Under-21 level as well.

The signing of Antonio Cordero during the summer, beating off interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, was one major step towards strengthening their options at just below first-team level. Georgian striker Vakhtang Salia has also joined Newcastle United after turning 18 in August in a deal orchestrated by former sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Speaking about the capture of Salia and the need to continue business like this, Mitchell told the club website: “We're delighted to get ahead of a number of other top clubs to sign Vakhtang,” he told the club website when the deal was confirmed last year. “Scouting and recruiting emerging talent is an essential part of building a sustainable future, particularly within the current PSR framework, so the market is fiercely competitive.

“We continue to scout extensively, both domestically and overseas, with a view to securing players who can come through our talent pathway and, ideally, become part of the first team in future.”

The responsibility of helping to continue developing the academy will now fall onto new sporting director Ross Wilson. Wilson’s move from Nottingham Forest was confirmed last week and he will hope to have a long-term impact at Newcastle United - something that his predecessors have been unable to achieve.

Speaking about Wilson’s appointment, Eddie Howe said: “I've known him for a number of years but not to any depth. He has been around the game for a long time. He has had a number of jobs and done really well from the outside.

“Working with him now, the first impressions of him and his work have been very good. He is a really good person and has fitted in really well so far. I am sure he can make a huge difference.”

Newcastle United opened their 2025/26 Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona but will be looking to put things right in Belgium this week.

The Magpies travel to face Champions League newcomers Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels on Wednesday evening (5:45pm kick-off). Newcastle will be hoping to pick up their first away win of the season and first Champions League away win since a 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen in 2003.

Newcastle are competing in the new 36-team group phase format for the first time. The format sees the top eight sides qualify for the last-16 while teams ranked ninth to 24th take part in a seeded knockout round play-off tie.

Teams ranked 25th and below exit the competition and Europe entirely, a change from the previous format, which saw teams ranked third in the four team groups enter the Europa League.

The new format sees United face eight different clubs, four at home and four away. After Barcelona and Union SG, they face Benfica, Athletic Bilbao and PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park along with trips to Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and holders Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle have never reached the knockout round of the Champions League having qualified for the group stage three times previously. In 2002/03, The Magpies managed to get out of their initial group but entered a second group phase as part of an old last-16 format.

Last time out in the Champions League in 2023/24, Newcastle got off to a strong start with a 0-0 draw at AC Milan followed up with a memorable 4-1 win over PSG. The Magpies sat top of their group after two games but ended up finishing bottom after taking just one more point from their final four group matches.

Newcastle sit 26th out of 36 teams after losing against Barcelona, while Union SG sit 5th after beating PSV 3-1 in their first ever Champions League group match.

Newcastle are one of a record six English teams competing in the Champions League this season. The Magpies entered the competition through the European Performance Spot route that granted fifth place in the Premier League entry to Europe’s elite club competition.

They joined last season’s top four of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea as well as Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur, who finished the league season in 17th place.

This season, an Opta supercomputer has predicted the Champions League group phase table and ranked every side based on their expected points (xpts) total, taking into account the matchday one results.
