Aston Villa opportunity could emerge to sign James Maddison in surprise Tottenham raid

James Maddison could opt to stay at Tottenham Hotspur next season even if they suffer a shock relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.

The 29-year-old has missed the entire season with a cruciate ligament injury and is not expected to return to action before the end of the campaign in May.

However, he will likely be back in time for pre-season training with Spurs, and may decide against a move away in favour of regaining his full match fitness.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Maddison could disregard interest from the likes of Aston Villa for at least six month.

That would then see him assess his future in the January transfer window should interest linger, but may be one player to stay in a difficult transfer window for Spurs.

James Maddison likely to stay at Tottenham

Brown told Football Insider on 10 March that Aston Villa are interested in Maddison and could take advantage of Tottenham’s situation if they are relegated.

While most of the Spurs squad would be expected to move on, and the midfielder would be available at a bargain price, he could decide to stick with his current club.

“Maddison is going to be an interesting one,” Brown told Football Insider.

“If the reports on his recovery are positive and he returns for Tottenham in pre-season, there could be an opportunity to bring in him on a bargain deal.

“If Tottenham are relegated, they’re going to struggle to keep hold of players and they’ll have to sell, so the opportunity will be there for clubs like Villa.

“From Maddison’s point of view, though, I think there’s a strong possibility he could stay at Spurs.

“The major factor for him is getting back fit and playing, and I would think he needs a good pre-season to get back playing first and foremost.

“If he can do that and get back to form early in the season with Tottenham, whichever league they might be in, then it might be something he looks at in January.

“The big thing for him, though, is returning to playing regularly and that might mean turning down interest from elsewhere and staying at Spurs.”

Micky van de Ven could be set to leave Tottenham

Despite suggestions Maddison could opt to remain at Tottenham regardless of whether they are relegated, they are bracing for multiple other key players to leave.

Among the most high-profile players being linked with the move away is Micky van de Ven, as some of Europe’s biggest clubs are interested in his signature.

Football Insider revealed on 8 March that Liverpool are leading the race for Van de Ven and have been handed a boost by Barcelona’s financial situation.

His likely £60-70million price tag will likely prove too steep for the Spanish giants to meet, potentially opening the door for the Reds to make a move.

The 24-year-old is widely expected to leave in the summer after what has been a miserable season which could end with Spurs being relegated to the Championship.

James Maddison and Fikayo Tomori react to Dominic Solanke announcement at Tottenham

Dominic Solanke has provided Tottenham Hotspur with a rare moment of positivity amongst the relegation fears this season.

The 28-year-old’s campaign has been rather injury-plagued, playing just 15 games across all competitions, but the striker has still managed to rack up six goals in that time.

Spurs, in general, have been plagued by injuries, with the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kuds now being joined by Cristian Romero and Conor Gallagher ahead of facing Liverpool on Sunday, 15 March.

Tottenham’s transfer plans are on hold while their league status is uncertain ahead of next season. However, Solanke may have given the Lilywhites a reason not to sign a new striker in the summer.

Dominic Solanke wins spectular award at Tottenham

While he may not have netted many goals, one of them caught the attention of fans up and down the Premier League, firing a scorpion kick past Man City during February.

The effort has now seen Solanke win Goal of the Month for last month.

Taking to Instagram (13 March), the official club account wrote: “Dominic Solanke has won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for his stunning scorpion kick vs Man City.

“Congratulations, Dom,” with clapping and scorpion emojis. The post gained a lot of attention, with James Maddison and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori among those liking the announcement on social media.

What’s next for the Tottenham striker?

Solanke’s future at Hotspur Way could largely depend on their survival this season.

In January, Football Insider understood that Solanke wanted to stay and fight in North London, despite rumours that Thomas Frank was considering offloading the former Bournemouth man.

Now, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, with concerns over both Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, who have struggled since their summer moves to St James’ Park.

There is very little chance that Solanke would want to stay with the Lilywhites should they get relegated this season, and right now, there is a very real possibility of that happening.

Of course, Igor Tudor is working extremely hard to save Spurs from relegation, but he has made very little impact so far.

Igor Tudor Sack: 'This is Why Tottenham Manager Isn't Gone Before Liverpool'

‘This is why Tottenham haven’t sacked Igor Tudor ahead of Liverpool clash – this is when it will happen’

Igor Tudor is unlikely to last until the end of the season as Tottenham Hotspur creep ever-closer to the Premier League relegation zone.

The new manager has lost all four of his games in charge since taking over from Thomas Frank, with Spurs floating just one point above the dropzone with nine games remaining.

After six losses on the bounce, the Lilywhites must now come up against Arne Slot’s Liverpool, a side they haven’t beaten at Anfield since 2011, but the Reds are also in bad form.

Tottenham could have a new manager very soon, but according to former Arsenal star Paul Merson, the Liverpool game has come too soon for Spurs to make a change in the dugout.

Tottenham backed to sack Igor Tudor after impending Liverpool defeat

Speaking on Sky Sports (13 March), Merson said: “I am, and I’m not. I am because of the results, but I’m not because it’s Liverpool away. I don’t know what manager would want to come in for the Liverpool game.

“I think they’ll wait until this game is over, and that gives them another week before the big game. For me, it’s not a free hit at all. If another manager comes in and you get beaten by three or four…

“I think they’ll wait. I’ll be shocked if he’s the manager for the cup final against Nottingham Forest.”

In between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, Spurs also have their Champions League second leg tie against Atletico Madrid, but if the manager had any sense, he would rest players in Europe.

Who is the favourite to replace the current Tottenham manager?

Football Insider understands that Tottenham are accelerating Tudor’s sack plan, and once again, the home supporters are rioting against the man in charge in the dugout.

Of course, the owners are also facing crushing pressure from the Spurs faithful, and even at the Cheltenham races, Harry Redknapp admitted that he would take the job if it were offered.

Tim Sherwood and Sam Allardyce have both been named in the list of potential new managers, while bigger names such as Roberto De Zerbi have also entered the race.

Appointing Tudor was always going to be a big risk. Very few are surprised by just how badly it has worked out for the Lilywhites.

Igor Tudor Sacked? Tottenham Accelerate Plans After 'Calamitous' Blow

Sources: Tottenham accelerate Igor Tudor sack plan after ‘calamitous’ blow

Tottenham Hotspur are set to accelerate plans to sack Igor Tudor after what has been a nightmare spell since he took over as interim manager.

Following the 5-2 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid in midweek, calls for the boss’ head have grown louder and hopes are beginning to fade.

Spurs had hoped the appointment of a hard-line interim boss would inspire the players to turn around their season, but it has had the opposite impact.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Tudor has failed to live up to expectations and could be sacked if they lose to Liverpool.

The club hoped Tudor would come in, improve results, and see out the season, but Tottenham could be looking for a new manager sooner than expected.

Tottenham could accelerate Igor Tudor sack plans

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 7 March that Tottenham will give Tudor three games to turn around their fortunes ahead of a crucial period of the season.

MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES

However, the result against Atletico Madrid means he may not have as many as that, with the board being encouraged to pull the trigger early.

Tudor will remain in charge for the visit to Liverpool on 15 March, but it came as a surprise to many at the club that he has been afforded that game.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “You wouldn’t think [he would have long left] with everything that’s going on there.

“He was brought in to turn things around at Tottenham, be a bit of a fire fighter and make sure results improved quickly, that hasn’t happened.

“Four straight defeats including the calamitous 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League which was another blow to them.

“But it does seem he’s going to get a reprieve and will be in charge for this weekend’s game at Liverpool. If that goes badly, they might have to replace Tudor.

“Spurs didn’t want to have to bring somebody else in, they were hoping Tudor would come in and have an immediate impact and help them climb the table.

“But they find themselves just one point above the drop zone. If results go against them this weekend they could be in that bottom three which was unthinkable probably at the start of the season.”

Who could replace Tudor at Tottenham?

With a growing expectation that Tudor will soon be sacked by Tottenham, they are being forced to assess the market for potential stop-gap replacements.

Spurs had hoped to wait until the summer to land their next manager, when big names are set to become available, but their precarious position has forced their hand.

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 9 March that Tottenham could turn to a previous boss, with Harry Redknapp and Glenn Hoddle among the contenders.

Tim Sherwood has also publicly declared his interest in the role, and there is a school of thought which suggests turning to somebody who knows the club could be their best bet.

The fans and players are in desperate need of a boost as the creep towards relegation, meaning their next appointment could be crucial to the club’s future.

Description

Chelsea told new Lucas Bergvall offer will be accepted after Tottenham latest

Tottenham Hotspur will struggle to keep hold of Lucas Bergvall if Chelsea make a new offer in the summer, regardless of whether they are relegated.

The 20-year-old was the subject of enquiries from both Chelsea and Aston Villa during the January transfer window, but both saw their advances rejected.

However, with Spurs plummeting down the Premier League table and relegation becoming a real threat, they may be forced to sell some key stars.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that even if they survive, the lack of European football means they will inevitably lose players.

That has put their Premier League rivals including Chelsea and Villa on alert over Bergvall’s potential availability, as Tottenham brace for a difficult transfer window.

Chelsea boosted in pursuit of Lucas Bergvall

Football Insider revealed last month that Chelsea have been encouraged in their pursuit of Bergvall and are increasingly confident of agreeing a deal.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are resigned to the fact they may lose a number of high profile players after what has been a disastrous season for them.

“A lot of clubs are keeping an eye on Tottenham,” Brown told Football Insider.

“There are a lot of players there who could make a move, and Lucas Bergvall is one of those. A lot of clubs could do with a player like him.

“Tottenham beat a few clubs to bring him in in the first place, so if he’s going to move on, I expect you’ll have those same clubs having a look at him.

“It’s going to be difficult for Spurs even if they don’t get relegated because if these top clubs come calling, the players are going to want to move on.

“Chelsea and Aston Villa asked about Bergvall before and that interest isn’t going to have faded, so I’m sure they’ll be keeping an eye on things.

“If Chelsea come in with a new offer for him, there’s a good chance they’ll have to let him go.”

Which other Spurs stars could be lured away?

Tottenham have worked hard to keep a number of high-profile players at the club over the last few years, but could be hard pushed to keep up their efforts.

Alongside Bergvall, a number of players including the likes of Destiny Udogie have previously been linked with move away, with Man City admirers of the left-back.

As a result, Brown told Football Insider that Man City could accelerate a move for Udogie and finally look to capitalise on their long-term interest in him.

The 23-year-old has missed large parts of this season through injury, but is widely expected to seek a move away if they suffer relegation.

Despite completing the signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves last year, Guardiola still wants a new left-back as Man City step up their transfer plans.

Wayne Rooney reveals what happened to Antonin Kinsky moments before Tottenham horror show vs Atletico Madrid

Wayne Rooney has revealed that Antonin Kinsky had been slipping over in the warm-up to his nightmare 17 minutes in Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Premier League side were 3-0 down within 15 minutes, after the young goalkeeper had made two fatal errors with the ball at his feet.

The 22-year-old’s position in the starting line-up had been a huge surprise, but it was brought to an early end when he was hooked off for Guglielmo Vicario after just 17 minutes were played.

Robin Le Normand added a fourth just minutes after the substitution, with the match ultimately ending 5-2 and leaving the Lilywhites with a mountain to climb in the last 16 second leg next week.

Tottenham’s loss is their sixth consecutive across all competitions, with the threat of relegation in the Premier League looming.

Wayne Rooney reveals pre-match Antonin Kinsky scenes

It was not just Kinsky struggling with the surface of the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano – Micky van de Ven’s fall allowed Antoine Griezmann to stride in on goal before scoring the second.

The goalkeeper had been brought into the starting line-up with his ability on the ball in mind, but his first slip saw the ball fall straight to Ademola Lookman, before it eventually found Marcos Llorente for the opener.

Kinsky will struggle to blame the pitch for the third goal, however. The Czech goalkeeper attempted to play a first-time ball with his left foot, but completely scuffed it into the path of Julian Alvarez.

His night was over, and despite the heart-warming support he has received, there is a feeling that he will not be able to look past that night for some time.

Tottenham have moved for Lucas Chavalier already, in an early attempt to refresh their goalkeeping options.

Speaking to The Overlap on Thursday, Rooney revealed that the 22-year-old had already been struggling to adapt to the surface before the game.

“He done it in the warm-up, apparently, as well,” he said. “Slipped a few times in the warm-up, it’s come out this morning.”

What Igor Tudor said after Kinsky display

Understandably, Kinsky has taken plenty of criticism for his role in the dramatic errors against Atleti, but Igor Tudor has been a target as well.

It was the Croatian’s decision to drop Vicario for such a huge game, and also his decision to substitute him after just 17 minutes.

“I was speaking with Toni after,” he said after the game. “He is a bright guy, good goalkeeper and unfortunately it happened in this big game, these big mistakes.

“The start of the game was too much for us. In this moment when we are fragile, when we are weak.”

Tottenham’s ‘worst-case scenario’ revealed as Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven face exits

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven will quit Tottenham Hotspur if they are relegated this season.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would be a “disaster” for Spurs if they lose their Premier League status.

Tottenham lost 3-1 against Crystal Palace in their latest Premier League outing, ensuring they have now gone 11 games without a league win.

Igor Tudor’s side sit 16th in the table and are just one point above third-bottom West Ham following their poor run of form.

Tottenham are expected to lose several stars if they are relegated to the Championship this season.

Why Tottenham relegation will be ‘big shock’

Premier League clubs often have relegation clauses in their players’ contracts to mitigate the costs of dropping out of the top flight.

The Athletic reported on 2 March the vast majority of Spurs’ squad have such relegation clauses that would see their wages drop by around 50 per cent in the Championship.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed the impact on Tottenham if they are relegated from the Premier League this season.

“Some of the higher-earning players, so Van de Ven, Romero and presumably some of those players who are currently injured, some of those will go in the summer,” said Borson.

“It’s obviously a disaster to get relegated for a club like Spurs.

“The whole cost base is set up to be a Premier League club and possibly even a Uefa qualifying club, so that will be a big shock to the system for them.

“People will have to take some pain in terms of wages.

“But they do have ways in which they can mitigate and the whole point of having that stadium that generates commercial revenue outside of football is that in the worst-case scenario, they’re okay. They’re not good, but they’re okay.”

How much do Tottenham spend on wages?

Deloitte’s 2026 Money League revealed Tottenham’s overall wage bill surged from £222million in 2023-24 to £249m last season.

Those numbers could have increased following Spurs’ success in the Europa League under former boss Ange Postecoglou.

Deloitte’s report revealed the turnover stood at £565m last season, but Tottenham would instantly lose more than £60m in revenue if they are unable to avoid relegation.

Spurs’ next game sees them take on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday (15 March) as they look to bounce back from their 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Tottenham Next Manager: Jurgen Klinsmann's Seven-Word Answer After he was Offered Job - Football Insider
Description

Jurgen Klinsmann’s seven-word answer when offered to become next Tottenham manager

Tottenham Hotspur legend Jurgen Klinsmann made it clear that he would not reject his former club if they came calling.

The Lilywhites are enduring perhaps their most difficult season in the Premier League era, with the threat of relegation growing by the game.

Thomas Frank was sacked last month after his side had lost two straight games, but Tottenham have lost another four since Igor Tudor arrived as an interim manager until the summer.

Matters got worse on Tuesday when the North London club were battered 5-2 by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Tottenham’s next manager may well be left with a deserted squad and a club on the verge of ruin, depending on how the next couple of months develop.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s Tottenham answer

Ex-Everton chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider this week that Tottenham must sack Tudor.

The Croatian was brought in to stabilise the situation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but, if anything, the chaos has only grown.

Tottenham were smashed by Arsenal in his debut game in charge, and losses to Fulham, Crystal Palace and now Atletico have been catastrophic.

Yet decision-makers seem hell-bent on letting Tudor see out the season, even if it means relegation from the Premier League.

A trip to Anfield is next up on Sunday, before next week sees Tottenham host Atletico in the second leg, before a relegation six-pointer against Nottingham Forest.

Defeat in that game would place the North London club directly in line for the drop, and decision-makers may well be forced into action.

Klinsmann, who made 68 appearances for Tottenham in the 1990s and scored 38 goals, told ESPN on Wednesday that he would not turn down the job.

“Who wouldn’t want the job? It’s Tottenham,” he said when asked.

Klinsmann’s managerial record

Much of Klinsmann’s managerial career came with international teams, with the United States for the longest time.

The former forward initially managed Germany, spending just two years in charge and leaving in 2006 despite an impressive performance at the 2006 World Cup.

He was then appointed by another of his former teams in Bayern Munich, taking charge of them in 2008 but lasting just over a year before he was dismissed.

Klinsmann is best known for his time with the United States, whom he, most notably, led to the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup before he was fired in 2018.

The 61-year-old would go on to manage Hertha Berlin and South Korea, but is yet to return to management since his 2024 exit.

Keith Wyness: Tottenham are doomed if the fans ‘don’t help the players’

The Premier League relegation battle will go down to the wire between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, as the bookies’ latest odds see the fight being “very close” between the two London clubs.

West Ham are currently in the relegation zone on goal difference, behind Nottingham Forest in 17th place, with Spurs just a point in front of both clubs.

Spurs are on an 11-game winless run in the league, with the club contemplating sacking manager Igor Tudor after just four matches in charge.

Tottenham fans ‘have got to rally round’ players in survival bid

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that West Ham have the “momentum” to stay up.

MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the fans and the media “are not helping” Spurs.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Now believe it or not, I know that we as chief executives, we were supposed to be, you know, a finger on the pulse and know everything ourselves, but often we would genuinely look at the bookies odds because they have pretty sophisticated models, as you can imagine, to give the odds.

“And when I looked at it this morning, West Ham were 13 to eight, and then second, we had Spurs at seven to four and Nottingham Forest are a bit further out at 11 to 4. So the bookies see it between West Ham and Spurs and it being very, very close.

“We saw West Ham winning in the FA Cup, and they’re the team with momentum, as we’ve discussed before, and I think that’s interesting. And Spurs are the ones without momentum and with the media on their backs big time, the fans on their backs. It’s really not helping and that’s why I’m saying the fans have got to rally round.”

Spurs must consider Igor Tudor sack

Wyness told Football Insider that Spurs sacking Tudor as manager may give them more hope of staying in the Premier League.

Tudor may have already lost the support of the Spurs fanbase, with the 47-year-old having also been criticised for substituting goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky off after only 17 minutes against Atletico Madrid.

Spurs have confirmed that Tudor will take his pre-match press conference as normal before their next game at Liverpool.

Tottenham have ‘made their choice’ on Igor Tudor – ‘His personality hasn’t worked’

Tottenham Hotspur should stick by interim boss Igor Tudor unless they can bring in a manager that can rally the fanbase.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, amid rumours that Tudor could be sacked after just four games at Spurs.

Tudor was appointed manager until the end of the season following the sacking of Thomas Frank in February, but the former Juventus boss has lost all his matches in charge so far, with Spurs hovering a point above the Premier League relegation zone.

If results do not improve, Spurs could sack Tudor before the end of the season, with the club wanting Mauricio Pochettino to be their next permanent manager.

Igor Tudor ‘has been dealt a difficult hand’ at Tottenham

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Spurs “might as well stick” with Tudor for the rest of the season.

MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the fans also have a massive part to play between now and the end of the season.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I am always one to advocate stability. I think it’s crucial. But Tudor has only had three or four games. I mean, it’s hard to say there’s any stability there at all.

“And maybe his personality hasn’t worked. We’ve got to see what the dressing room is feeling like right now. We know there have been injuries, different issues. It’s a difficult hand he’s been dealt.

“And so I think potentially they’ve made their choice, and I think they might as well stick with it, go through it, unless they can find a way to rally the fans in some other way, which I think could be crucial in those coming key games that are coming up. They can’t have empty stadiums again at half-time.

“They’ve got to get behind the team and do everything I can. And I say, I can’t stress how important it was for Everton, the way the fans treated the team, that really got them across the line, in my view, for three seasons in a row almost. And so it’s something that they should look at and learn from.”

Spurs remain keen on Andy Robertson swoop

Sources have told Football Insider that Spurs will reignite their interest in Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window.

Robertson was linked with a move to north London in January, and the 32-year-old’s contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season.

The Scotland international has started just five Premier League games for Liverpool this season, as he has slipped behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order.
