Description

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has now urged Tottenham Hotspur to consider one Premier League manager should the axe drop on Thomas Frank.

Thomas Frank has come under pressure in recent weeks following a drop off in performance from his team.

Spurs are without a win in their last five Premier League games, a run that has pushed the club down into the bottom half of the table.

The football on show has been flat, with Tottenham not playing the expansive front foot style supporters crave, and that has naturally left frustration boiling among the fanbase as matches drift without real authority or spark.

Jamie Carragher names the manager Tottenham should target

Talks of a sack have already surfaced, with a section of Tottenham supporters labeling Frank as not a real Spurs manager after the defeat to Fulham last weekend.

Boos have been heard inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on several occasions this season as Frank’s side struggle to impose themselves, and the feeling that change is needed is slowly creeping into the wider conversation.

Jamie Carragher has now given his view on who he believes should replace Frank if Tottenham decide to act.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Speaking on The Overlap, the Sky Sports pundit explained why Marco Silva fits the mould.

He said, “I actually think he was the one manager Everton should have stuck with.

“I have always seen Silva at Tottenham, I am not saying Tottenham as in change Thomas Frank put Marco Silva in.

“The point I am trying to make is not quite go from Fulham to like you know a Liverpool or Manchester City you think going to sort of compete for the league but sort of that sort of level just belong with it trying to get you know Champions League maybe, you know Aston Villa, that type of team that would almost be the next step for him in the Premier League. I think he probably deserves one of those jobs.”

Why Marco Silva is not a good fit for Spurs

Frank is under pressure, but he did buy respite as he ended Tottenham’s run of three defeats in a row in all competitions with a draw against Newcastle on Tuesday night.

However, the performance on the night was not convincing as Newcastle outplayed Tottenham for long stretches, and Spurs were fortunate to come away with a point.

Silva already got the better of Frank earlier this season, yet his approach does not fully align with the brand of football Tottenham supporters demand, despite his name now entering the discussion.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are eager to bring Antoine Semenyo to North London, but the player wishes to make contact with a Premier League rival.

There is no greater need in the Tottenham first-team squad than on the left wing. This has been made clear by Thomas Frank, who continues to rotate between Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert, while even Richarlison and Xavi Simons have featured out wide.

Reports suggest Antoine Semenyo is one of the top transfer targets at Tottenham Hotspur, and Spurs are intensifying their interest in the winger.

However, doubts have already been raised about whether Tottenham will be able to sign Semenyo, as Liverpool are ahead of them in the race to sign the Premier League star.

Manchester City overtake Tottenham in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo

In a new update on Semenyo, Team Talk report that Spurs are not viewed as a desirable option due to their poor form and position in the Premier League table.

Manchester City would be a more attractive destination and the club have made formal enquiries about Semenyo’s £65m release clause.

The 25-year-old is reportedly ‘keen to engage’ with Manchester City after they made contact with Bournemouth to discuss the specifics around a potential deal.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham eyed Semenyo in the summer and are keen on his directness, but the interest from other Premier League clubs means signing him is unlikely at this point.

Spurs are interested in Samu Aghehowa as well as Semenyo

Although Tottenham are in a poor position to sign Semenyo, the club have also shown interest in Porto youngster Samu Aghehowa.

The forward has scored 10 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions this season and could be a more realistic option in January.

Of course, he too is attracting interest from other clubs, but bringing him to North London is at least a possibility.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are now facing an alarming issue under Thomas Frank as one key trend continues to worsen.

Tottenham Hotspur have been inconsistent in the past few weeks under Thomas Frank, with results and performances on the pitch nothing to write home about.

Spurs fans have not been shy about making their feelings clear, with many interested in seeing their side be more attacking in games.

However, the opposite has been the case for most of the season, with Tottenham more often than not being outplayed by sides below and above them in the Premier League table, and now statistics have exposed a worrying trend in Frank’s side.

Tottenham attacking numbers expose a worrying decline under Frank

The underlying numbers now support how poorly Tottenham have performed in attack in the last month.

It has been revealed that Spurs have not had a single shot on target in the first half of a Premier League game since November 1.

To put that into perspective, the last time Spurs managed a shot on target in the first half of a league game was back on October 26 against Everton, where they won 3-0.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Ever since then, Tottenham has gone on to play five games, and in that time, they have not threatened the opposition goalkeeper in the first half of matches.

Spurs struggle to test goalkeepers continues as December begins

We are in December now, and that trend continues as Spurs once more failed to hit the target in the first half in their clash against Newcastle.

In fact, it was not until the 78th minute that Tottenham managed a shot on target, when Cristian Romero’s diving header found the back of the net.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s poor run of results coincides with this worrying stat, as they have not won any games where they have not managed a shot on target in their last outings since November.

Tottenham Hotspur have just made a big move towards signing one of Xavi Simons’ former teammates in January.

Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new winger after a summer which saw Heung-min Son and Bryan Gil depart the club, while Manor Solomon was loaned to Villarreal.

It has been said that Spurs are plotting a move for Antoine Semenyo. The Bournemouth winger has already bagged six goals and 3 assists in 13 Premier League appearances this season.

There have also been talks about Tottenham showing interest in Yan Diomande, a 19-year-old who is valued at £88m.

Tottenham Hotspur step up interest in Yan Diomande

According to Sky Sports Switzerland, Tottenham have held advanced talks with Diomande’s entourage, but they face competition from Liverpool.

Spurs have been monitoring Diomande for several months, and he has caught the eye of Thomas Frank in particular because he is a dynamic player who can break through defences.

RB Leipzig remain calm for the time being as they have not entered into official talks with any potential buyers. They are closely monitoring discussions involving their young forward, who has four goals and four assists already this season.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham could benefit from Liverpool signing Antoine Semenyo

Although Spurs want to sign Semenyo, it could be beneficial for the club if Liverpool are the team to secure the Bournemouth star.

After all, it seems unlikely he will choose to play his football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the latter half of this season.

This could mean Liverpool cool their interest in Diomande, allowing Tottenham to swoop in and seal a deal. However, Spurs may be reluctant to pay £88m, so there could be some negotiating to be done before an agreement is made.

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a positive injury update as two injured stars take huge steps in their recovery journey.

Tottenham Hotspur‘s injury situation has improved since the last international break, where over seven players were sidelined because of setbacks that left the squad stretched.

Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mohammed Kudus and Kolo Muani are among those to have since returned to full fitness, which has arrived as a big boost for Thomas Frank and his plans moving forward.

Still, others remain sidelined and are pushing to return, with fresh reports now handing Tottenham even more positive news as the recovery table continues to clear gradually.

Radu Dragusin and Kota Takai take positive step in Tottenham recovery

The official Tottenham Hotspur channel has now confirmed that Radu Dragusin and Kota Takai have taken positive steps in their recovery journey.

The pair featured earlier this week in a behind-closed-doors match for Spurs Under-21s against Dagenham and Redbridge at Hotspur Way, a friendly match that allowed both players to get valuable minutes into their legs.

It was Takai’s first minutes in a Tottenham shirt while Dragusin continued to build fitness, having already featured in a behind-closed-doors match during the November international break.

Spurs fitness boost arrives at an important stage

The return to full fitness for the two players will be a welcome boost for Tottenham, who remain active across the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Spurs’ defensive options are thin at present, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies the only fully fit choices available to Frank, which leaves little room for rotation in a demanding period.

Given the length of the season and the injury record of Romero and Van de Ven, it is important for Frank to have more options available to him as the campaign deepens.

Description

Kevin Danso has given high words of praise to his Tottenham Hotspur teammate following his heroics at St James’ Park.

Cristian Romero was uncharacteristically poor against PSG last week and missed Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Fulham due to a suspension.

The Spurs captain came back into the starting line-up against Newcastle, and many were surprised to see him partner Danso rather than Micky van de Ven, who was benched by Thomas Frank.

Even though Tottenham conceded twice at St James’ Park, both Romero and Danso threw their bodies on the line and made some vital blocks when the Magpies were on top.

Kevin Danso says Cristian Romero led by example for Tottenham

It was not only in Tottenham’s third that the Argentine made an impact, but also popped up with two crucial goals in the other box.

Danso admitted that it was a tough night for Spurs and lavished praise on Romero for leading by example and bailing out the side.

The Austrian told Sky Sports: “It was a tough match, always difficult to come to St James’ Park, and it’s always tough away from home. We showed the mentality that we had been working on throughout the season.”

MORE SPURS STORIES

On Romero’s first equaliser, Danso said: “Gave us a lot of momentum. He always leads by example. Scored two very important goals, the second one was a very nice goal. He just showed again today what a world-class defender he is. We’re just going to keep pushing on. We just have to keep that mentality.

Danso reacts to controversial penalty decision

There has been plenty said and written about the decision to give a late penalty to Newcastle after a coming together in the box between Rodrigo Bentancur and Dan Burn.

Thomas Frank has criticised VAR for intervening, suggesting that the referee had got the decision correct in the first instance, but Danso was more philosophical about the call.

When asked about the penalty decision, the centre-back said: “It’s tough. It feels like some weeks a ref will give it, and some weeks they won’t. We just have to focus and do exactly what we did today.”

Harry Kane and Son may be gone, but Tottenham have a new 'difference maker', says Graham Roberts - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts has heaped praise on one current Spurs star as a ‘difference maker’ in the big moments.

Tottenham Hotspur are 11th in the Premier League table, but they would be 14th without the contributions of Cristian Romero on Tuesday night.

The defender found himself in the attacking third against Newcastle and headed home to make the scoreline level, only for the Magpies to retake the lead through a controversial penalty.

However, Romero had the final say with an overhead kick, which gave Spurs a draw at St James’ Park for the first time since 2021.

Graham Roberts sends strong message to Cristian Romero after Tottenham draw

Ex-Tottenham defender Graham Roberts has piled praise on Romero for his brilliance on Tuesday night. According to Roberts, it is thanks to star players like the Argentine that Spurs lifted the Europa League trophy last season.

He posted on his X account: “The Reason we won that cup was because of big characters like Cristian Romero. Yes, he has made some mistakes over the last couple of years, but for me, when it matters in big moments, he will be the difference. He has won the biggest of it all!”

MORE SPURS STORIES

This came after a post 11 minutes earlier when Roberts slammed the decision to give Newcastle a penalty. However, he again praised Romero for his display.

“Absolute joke, the ref and VAR are disgraceful,” he posted. “Proper captain’s performance that from Cristian Romero. We need to build on that good point now. Could hear the fans all night, well done boys and now we need 3 points [at the] weekend.”

Romero is not under threat at Spurs

As Roberts has said, Romero has not always reached the level required of him at Tottenham. Sometimes the club’s supporters expect more from a player who has won the World Cup and Copa America.

However, the 27-year-old has shown resilience in the face of doubt time and time again, and he remains one of the best defenders in the country. There is certainly no player who has come close to knocking Romero out of his position in the first team.

Clinton Morrison has weighed in on VAR’s decision to intervene and hand Newcastle United a late penalty against Tottenham for a foul by Rodrigo Bentancur on Dan Burn.

The penalty awarded to Newcastle on 86 minutes has been the main talking point following Tottenham’s 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.

While Spurs managed to rally and get a late equaliser after Anthony Gordon converted from the spot, many have questioned the decision for VAR to intervene.

Thomas Frank and Eddie Howe disagree on whether the incident constituted a penalty, with the Spurs boss being firm in his assessment that it was a mistake by VAR to intervene.

Clinton Morrison says VAR was wrong to give penalty against Tottenham

Referee Thomas Bramall did not initially award Newcastle a penalty when Burn went to ground, but the VAR asked him to rewatch the incident on the sideline monitor.

That led to Bramall changing his decision and ruling that Bentancur had obstructed Burn without having his eyes on the ball.

Reacting to the decision, former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We’ve got six games tomorrow, there’ll be loads of defending like that, let’s see if VAR calls that.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“Just stay out of it because there’s no pulling of the shirt or anything. He’s just standing his ground and not looking at it.”

The VAR put the referee under pressure

While it is fair to say that Bentancur did not look at the ball, replays clearly showed that Burn had a hold of the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, who was unable to pull out of the wrestling match even if he wanted to.

The referee’s initial instinct that both players were equally culpable was correct, but he was put under pressure when VAR asked him to re-examine the decision.

Bramall, being a relatively inexperienced official, was always going to give the penalty once he was asked to go over to the monitor.

Description

Rio Ferdinand has delivered a strong verdict on the decision to award a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, and Cristian Romero has made a public response.

Tottenham Hotspur will be fairly pleased with their 2-2 draw against Newcastle United. Although they were once again denied a victory, defeat seemed almost inevitable until Cristian Romero stepped up and scored with an overhead kick.

However, there was controversy surrounding Newcastle’s second goal. The hosts were awarded a spot kick for an apparent foul on Dan Burn, but Thomas Frank has branded the decision an ‘absolute mistake’.

Rodrigo Bentancur was the player penalised, and while he made the initial contact with Burn, the Newcastle defender had him in a headlock, yet somehow still managed to win a penalty.

Cristian Romero makes his thoughts clear on the penalty incident against Tottenham

With Frank refusing to shy away from offering his take on the VAR decision to send the referee to the monitor, it is no surprise that Romero has shared his opinion too.

However, the Spurs captain has opted to do so by repeating the attack on VAR made by a former Premier League star, rather than directly addressing the issue himself.

Romero reposted Rio Ferdinand’s X post, which read: “Disgraceful decision to reward NUFC penalty… whoever controlling the VAR should be ashamed + the ref then reviews and should be also. Well done Newcastle.”

Spurs could lodge a complaint to PGMOL

This is not the only controversial decision to be ruled against Tottenham in recent weeks. One of Eberechi Eze’s goals in the North London derby was awarded, despite three Arsenal players blocking the view of Guglielmo Vicario in an offside position.

Certain other clubs have no issue filing complaints to PGMOL for decisions they perceive to be incorrect and perhaps Spurs should use that option to apply pressure on the league’s decision-makers.

Jamie Redknapp says Tottenham star has ‘grown on him’ after not being his ‘biggest fan’ - Spurs Web
Description

Jamie Redknapp admits he has changed his tune about one Tottenham Hotspur star as he has seen more of him.

Many players struggle to shake off the early reputation they develop among the media in England.

One such example is current Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, who continues to be labelled as overrated, owing to some of his brash tackles early in his Spurs career.

Even though the 27-year-old has a much-improved disciplinary record over the past few years, some still view him as a red card waiting to happen.

Jamie Redknapp has changed his mind about Tottenham captain Cristian Romero

Redknapp waxed lyrical about the Spurs centre-back for his brace against Newcastle, admitting that the defender’s diving header for his first was up there with one of the best he has seen.

The former Tottenham midfielder revealed that he was not the biggest fan of the Argentine at first, but admitted that he has grown on him.

The pundit Sky Sports Premier League Live (2/12/25 – 22:28): “That is bravery at his best. Dan Burn is throwing his left foot, and he’s throwing his head at it. We’ve seen some great diving headers in the Premier League, Robin van Persie springs to mind. Some really brave, great headers and that is up there with the best of them.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“He gets across him, he’s aggressive and he gets into Dan Burn’s blind spot, and then he just nips in front of him, it is a brilliant header. That’s the sort of player he is, you see him at the end, he’s fiery and him and Guimaraes are having a row. I wasn’t always his biggest fan, but I must admit, he has certainly grown on me.”

A true captain’s performance by Romero

Given the growing disconnect between the Spurs players and the fans, and the doom and gloom surrounding the club, the Lilywhites desperately needed their big players to stand up at St James’ Park.

That is exactly what Romero did, and his determination to get on the end of that cross from Mohammed Kudus tells you the kind of character he is.

It would have been easy for the Tottenham players to feel sorry for themselves when that controversial penalty was awarded to Newcastle.

The desire they showed to throw bodies forward and fight back shows what this set of players are made of.
