Description

Thomas Frank has provided an injury update on his Tottenham Hotspur squad ahead of their Premier League opener against newly promoted Burnley.

Tottenham Hotspur’s attention now turns to Premier League action following their 4-3 penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of PSG in the UEFA Super Cup.

It was a valiant display from Thomas Frank’s men, who showed they are capable of going toe to toe against the best club in the world, even despite suffering a defeat.

Frank made some tactical changes coming into that clash, opting for a back three and using two tens as he looked to find a way around his lack of attacking midfielders.

Destiny Udogie will miss Burnley match

Spurs’ two creative midfielders, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, remain sidelined following their long-term injuries, leaving them to miss out on the PSG clash.

Dominic Solanke made his return in midweek and played the final ten minutes of the European fixture.

Yves Bissouma was also absent from the entire line-up, with Frank revealing that Bissouma was left out because of disciplinary reasons.

MORE SPURS STORIES

With the Burnley clash coming a few days after the PSG encounter, Thomas Frank has now sat down with the media to address Tottenham’s injury situation ahead of their Premier League opener.

Frank has confirmed Destiny Udogie will miss the fixture in N17 tomorrow as he continues his recovery, while the rest of his squad came through the match unscathed.

He told the official Spurs site: “Every player is available for the team tomorrow (who was available from the last game). Destiny is progressing.”

Spurs prepare for Premier League kick-off against Burnley

The new season now kicks off properly with Tottenham facing newly promoted Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm UK time on Saturday.

Fans in the UK, however, will not be able to watch the game live on TV, due to blackout rules, meaning those who want to catch the match live would have to go to the stadium.

However, highlights could be watched later in the evening on BBC’s Match of the Day, or on the club’s social media channels.

Savinho’s agent is set to fly to London to ‘unlock’ talks with Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs Web
Description

Savinho’s representatives intend to push through the winger’s move from Manchester City to Tottenham Hotspur over the coming days.

Earlier this week, Tottenham’s £43m offer for Savinho was turned down by Man City, but the Lilywhites have not given up on their pursuit of the Brazilian.

Spurs are expected to return with an improved offer for Savinho, but the player will not come cheap, according to reports over the last 48 hours.

On Thursday, journalist Jorge Nicola revealed that Savinho’s agent has informed Tottenham that they would have to pay €80m (£67m) to sign the winger, and it looks like the Man City man’s representative is now taking matters into his own hands.

Savinho’s agent flying to London to negotiate Tottenham move

According to The Daily Mail, Savinho’s agent, Frederico Moraes, left Brazil on Thursday to depart for England amidst the talks between Spurs and Man City.

The report says that Moraes is set to get involved in ‘further negotiations next week’ and he intends to push through his client’s move to Spurs, which the 21-year-old is keen to complete.

The outlet claims that the former Girona man does not want to be a fringe player in the season leading up to the World Cup and has thus decided that he would be better off moving to N17.

MORE SPURS STORIES

It is explained that Pep Guardiola has been seeking ways to trim the size of his squad as part of a reboot at the Etihad Stadium, and would be willing to let Savinho go if City’s £67m asking price is met.

DiarioAS journalist Eduardo Burgos has also backed up this information, stating that Savinho’s agent is set to fly to London to ‘unlock’ the transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

Savinho deal does not impact Spurs’ pursuit of Eberechi Eze

The Mail back up what we have heard from other sources over recent weeks by making it clear that Spurs’ talks over Savinho do not impact their pursuit of Eberechi Eze, which is ongoing.

The Lilywhites are holding negotiations with Palace over the England international, who is expected to cost a similar amount to the Brazilian.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly making progress in their negotiations with Crystal Palace over Eberechi Eze, according to a new update.

It emerged on Thursday that Spurs are ready to make an opening offer for Eze as they step up their pursuit of the England international.

In a boost to Tottenham, it has emerged that Arsenal are no longer keen on Eze as they are prioritising signing a left-winger over a number ten.

This means that the Lilywhites could potentially have a free run at the Eagles star, and it appears they are not wasting any time in trying to wrap up a deal.

Eberechi Eze is ‘inching closer’ to a move to Tottenham

This update comes from The Daily Mail, who say that Eze would cost around £68m, but that has not deterred Tottenham.

The outlet reveals that Spurs are currently locked in talks with Palace and are ‘inching closer’ to striking a deal, although an agreement has not been reached by the two clubs.

The report adds that despite Arsenal expressing their interest in the 27-year-old earlier this summer, the player looks more likely to end up at Tottenham Hotspur.

How much Spurs are willing to pay for Eze

It was reported earlier this week that Spurs now understand exactly what it will take to land Eze following their talks with the Eagles over the last week.

According to an update from talkSPORT on Thursday, Tottenham are hoping to land Eze for around £55m.

Predicted Tottenham XI vs Burnley in Premier League opener as Thomas Frank makes 4 changes - Spurs Web
Description

Thomas Frank will be aiming for the perfect start to his Tottenham tenure when his side welcomes newly promoted Burnley to north London on Saturday afternoon. Let’s take a look at our predicted Tottenham XI to face Burnley.

Thomas Frank will be hoping his Tottenham Hotspur side can get their Premier League campaign off to a perfect start against newly promoted Burnley on Saturday afternoon, with a victory.

Scott Parker’s men, on the other hand, will be aiming to cause an upset when they visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, seeking a first Premier League victory over Tottenham since 2022.

With Spurs having already contested the UEFA Super Cup just days before their league opener, there will be plenty of attention on Frank’s starting XI for Saturday’s clash, and we have taken a closer look at how they might line up.

Here is our predicted Tottenham XI for the Premier League opener against Burnley.

Predicted Tottenham XI vs Burnley in the Premier League

Goalkeeper – Guglielmo Vicario: The Italian shot-stopper looks set to keep hold of the number one spot for now, having started the last two matches, including the Super Cup final.

Right-back – Pedro Porro: Last time out, Frank deployed Porro as a wing-back, underlining just how crucial the Spaniard is to his system. We fully expect him to retain his place on Saturday regardless of the formation.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Centre-back – Cristian Romero: The new Tottenham captain should lead Spurs out in front of a packed home crowd.

Centre-back – Micky van de Ven: The Dutchman had a mixed outing against PSG, opening the scoring in the Thomas Frank era before seeing his penalty saved in the shootout. Still, he is expected to partner Romero in a back four.

Left-back – Djed Spence: The Englishman may well continue on the left side of defence, as it remains unclear whether Destiny Udogie is fully match fit.

Pivot midfielder – Joao Palhinha: The Portuguese international is beginning to show his importance in the holding role. He logged a solid 60-plus minutes against PSG and should start again.

Pivot midfielder – Archie Gray: This could be one match too many for Rodrigo Bentancur, who has played over an hour in each of the last two fixtures. We expect the Uruguayan to be rested, with Gray stepping in.

Attacking midfielder – Lucas Bergvall: With no new arrivals in the number ten role, makeshift options remain the order of the day, and Bergvall is expected to get the nod.

Right midfielder – Brennan Johnson: Tottenham’s top scorer in the Premier League last season will be eager to get off the mark after not featuring in the Super Cup final.

Striker – Richarlison: The Brazilian produced a much-improved display against PSG, leading the line effectively during his time on the pitch. Frank will be looking for more of the same.

Tottenham have significant money to spend on late transfers following big development - Spurs Web
Description

A new report has shed light on the role that Thomas Frank has in Tottenham’s transfer decisions and why the North Londoners are not short of money to spend in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Tottenham have only signed two Premier League-proven, senior players so far this summer: Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus, and both proved their worth in the UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Spurs fans have been crying out for more top-class signings, particularly after the injury to James Maddison.

The supporters have received some positive news over the last few days, with several sources now claiming that Tottenham are simultaneously working on deals for Eberechie Eze and Savinho.

Tottenham have plenty of money to spend before the transfer deadline

BBC Sport have now said that there is no shortage of funds at Tottenham Hotspur as they look to make a splash in the final couple of weeks of the transfer window.

This is because ENIC are thought to have injected cash into the club, although Spurs have not officially confirmed such an investment.

The report claims that Frank is having a ‘significant say’ in Tottenham’s transfer business, with the Dane being the driving force behind the club’s signing of Kudus and their current pursuit of Savinho.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Frank has received transfer blows this summer

However, BBC Sport say that this transfer window has been challenging for Tottenham as they have not always been able to get their top targets through the door.

One of the club’s biggest blows is now public knowledge, with Morgan Gibbs-White deciding to snub Spurs and remain at Nottingham Forest.

The outlet claims that Tottenham and Frank would also like to sign Marc Guehi, but the centre-back has made it clear that his preference is to join Liverpool.

Ramon Vega singles out Tottenham player who must ‘improve massively’ after Super Cup heartbreak

Ramon Vega singles out Tottenham player who must 'improve massively' after Super Cup heartbreak - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur suffered an agonising defeat in the UEFA Super Cup and former player Ramon Vega has called out a player who made a critical error.

Thomas Frank was minutes away from getting off to a dream start at Tottenham, but securing a second European trophy in under four months proved to be too tough a task.

Spurs put in a valiant display against PSG and were in a highly promising position towards the end of the game. However, they continued to spend less and less time in possession of the ball and struggled to relieve the pressure exerted by the Champions League winners.

As the legs of the starting eleven began to tire, it was clear that substitutions needed to be made, but Frank clearly lacked confidence in his substitutes. It took 72 minutes for the Dane to make his first changes and only three substitutions had been made as stoppage time approached.

The players to come on failed to have any positive impact on the game, and one player in particular had a poor showing.

Ramon Vega questions Mathys Tel after Tottenham cameo

Former Tottenham defender called out one of Tottenham’s substitutions after the final whistle sounded in Udine. His X post read: “Tel? Needs to improve massively.”

MORE SPURS STORIES

Mathys Tel was only brought on with ten minutes remaining, but that was enough time for him to face criticism. He failed to win any duels and committed a few fouls, including one on the edge of the Spurs penalty box.

However, his biggest mistake came in the penalty shootout, which PSG won after slotting in four of their five spot kicks. The Frenchman had the beating of Lucas Chevalier, but his penalty completely missed the target, just like Vitinha’s had moments earlier.

Tel’s poor cameo has been noted by the likes of Fotmob and Sofascore, who gave him match ratings of 5.9 and 4.9 respectively.

Mathys Tel has barely had a good game for Tottenham… yet

Holding a metaphorical knife to the throat of a young player after a defeat is never a good idea. However, football is a brutal sport and noting a player’s disappointing display is often necessary.

For Tel, there have been a number of poor displays since he made the switch from Bayern Munich to Tottenham. Other than his goal in the FA Cup against Aston Villa, the 20-year-old has not shown much to justify the money Spurs have splashed to bring him to the club.

It is difficult to see the difference between Tel and a player like Mikey Moore, who has been shipped off on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

There is time for Tel to find his feet and Tottenham and writing him off this early would be unfair. However, perhaps Vega has a point. Tel must improve if he wants to be rewarded with first-team opportunities. He needs to show Spurs supporters why his club were willing to invest £29m to make him their own.

Tottenham are ‘being kept informed’ as centre-back edges closer to Champions League club

Tottenham are 'being kept informed' as centre-back edges closer to Champions League club - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the situation of a young South American centre-back as Marseille step up their interest in the player’s services.

Over the last week, Tottenham have mainly been linked with attacking players, and one can understand why that is the case, given that the Lilywhites need to replace Heung-min Son and the injured James Maddison.

However, Spurs may also need reinforcements at the back, particularly given reports that Luka Vuskovic is expected to be loaned out this summer.

It has now been claimed that a 21-year-old centre-back, who is making waves in Belgian football, is on Tottenham’s wishlist.

Tottenham are keeping an eye on Club Brugge star Joel Ordonez

TBR Football have now revealed that Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez has admirers at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the best young centre-backs in the Belgian top flight since joining Brugge two years ago, and it is revealed that several Premier League clubs have made contact over their availability over the last 12 months.

One of those is Tottenham, who are ‘kept informed’ of Ordonez’s situation as Marseille step up their efforts to land the youngster.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa are also monitoring the Ecuador international’s situation, with intermediaries informing these clubs that they have to make a move very soon if they want to land the youngster, as he is edging closer to a switch to Marseille.

Why Thomas Frank may want to sign another centre-back

Even if Vuskovic leaves, that will leave Frank with five full-time options at centre-back (Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, Kevin Danso, and Kota Takai) plus Ben Davies.

However, the injury records of Romero and Van de Ven are very concerning, and Tottenham will need a big squad to cope with the rigours of Champions League football.

We also know that Frank is no stranger to employing three at the back, which is why one would not be surprised if the Lilywhites sign another centre-back before the window slams shut.

Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy have handed glowing praise to Thomas Frank after his first competitive Tottenham match in the UEFA Super Cup final.

Football is finally back, and for Tottenham Hotspur fans, the opening fixture brought a mixture of emotions as they watched their side in competitive action for the first time under Thomas Frank.

The clash against Paris Saint-Germain unfolded in two distinct phases, with Tottenham looking composed and confident for the first eighty minutes, offering supporters a glimpse of the exciting football that could define the season ahead.

However, the final ten minutes served as a sobering reminder of the work still to be done, as Spurs let a two-goal lead slip before losing the final on penalties.

Danny Murphy praises Thomas Frank and Tottenham after PSG clash

But there is still plenty to take encouragement from, according to Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy, who both lauded Thomas Frank’s debut performance as Tottenham manager.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Murphy highlighted the progress already evident in the side and the optimism that comes with it.

He also claimed that Tottenham were bound to improve after last season’s struggles, stating that there is a lot to look forward to.

MORE SPURS STORIES

He said: “I mean let us be honest, they cannot not improve after the last season… I think there is a lot to look forward to. They have got better competition for places, some of the young players they have got whom we know are good have had a bit more experience now and they still have a few weeks left in the window”.

Wayne Rooney tips Tottenham to challenge for Europe

Rooney also echoed this sentiment, pointing out that Tottenham looked more balanced across the pitch in the PSG match, before confidently predicting that they could push for European football this season.

“I think the balance of the team looks a lot better even just from ninety minutes watching them play, the balance of the team looks much better.

“So I think if they keep that balance and keep players fit then I think they will certainly be challenging for Europe,” Rooney said.

Troy Deeney puts question marks over five Tottenham stars, despite calling one duo ‘solid’

Troy Deeney puts question marks over five Tottenham stars, despite calling one duo ‘solid’ - Spurs Web
Description

Troy Deeney does not believe Tottenham Hotspur have reinforced their squad sufficiently this summer, and he admits that he fears for Thomas Frank as the Lilywhites embark on a Champions League adventure.

Frank has said that he wants Tottenham to be competitive in all four competitions, but most Spurs fans would agree that Dane has not been sufficiently backed in the transfer window so far.

With the new season fast approaching, Tottenham Hotspur fans are getting impatient with the lack of new signings, with a humbling at the hands of Bayern Munich last week exposing the side’s weaknesses.

Frank has admitted that Spurs are not done strengthening their squad this summer, and Deeney believes that the North Londoners require major reinforcements across the pitch.

Troy Deeney feels Tottenham’s squad has too many holes

Tottenham will be back in Europe’s premier club competition after a two-year absence, and they will enter the tournament as the holders of the Europa League.

Guglielmo Vicario has said that Spurs can surprise teams in the Champions League, but Deeny is not convinced that they have the required quality to go toe-to-toe with the best sides on the continent.

The former Watford striker told talkSPORT: “I think it’s a really difficult time for Spurs – can this team compete in the Champions League?

MORE SPURS STORIES

“You look at the two centre-halves, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, if they’re fit and available, that’s solid. That’s very, very good. But are they fit and available enough?

“Then you’ve got Radu Dragusin, who is already injured, and Kevin Danso. He’s done nothing wrong, but he was going to Wolves last year. Let’s call it as it is. He was going to Wolves for a reason. If you had to play those two in the Champions League game, I think you’re in trouble.

“The full-backs are questionable. Where’s Djed Spence going to play? Is he going to be your number one? Is Pedro Poro going to be your number one right-back?

“I’m not sure. The goalkeeper, I’m definitely not sure on, personally. And what’s going to happen with Richarlison? Because it was thought he was leaving.”

Deeney is worried for Thomas Frank

The pundit suggested that Frank would have expected the Tottenham hierarchy to deliver more this summer when he walked through the door.

The 51-year-old made a habit of getting the best from what he had at Brentford, and Deeney believes that he will have to do the same at Spurs.

The pundit added: “It must be really difficult for Thomas Frank, because he can’t move anyone out because no one wants to buy these players because of their injury records – a lot of Spurs players were injured last year – 13 at one point.

“And because they can’t get the players out, he can’t get the people that he wants in, so he’s probably going to have to work with what he’s got.”

Glenn Hoddle thinks Tottenham have just given themselves a Champions League boost

Glenn Hoddle thinks Tottenham have just given themselves a Champions League boost - Spurs Web
Description

Glenn Hoddle has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur were the much better side in the UEFA Super Cup final, and has explained why Spurs fans should be optimistic about their side’s chances in the Champions League on the back of that performance.

Tottenham’s results against the bigger sides were generally very poor under Ange Postecoglou, and the Australian was often criticised for not adapting his style of play when coming up against top teams.

We have already seen that things will be very different under Thomas Frank, who has a history of tweaking his tactics based on the strengths and weaknesses of the opponent.

That is what he did against PSG, with the Lilywhites setting up in a 3-5-2 formation and nullifying the Ligue 1 giants’ attacking threat for the vast majority of the encounter.

Glenn Hoddle says Tottenham can take a lot of belief from their performance against PSG

While Spurs ultimately failed to get their hands on the trophy, Hoddle was impressed by the fact that the North Londoners were dominant against the European champions for the majority of the encounter.

He insisted that Thomas Frank has found the template to use when his side comes up against top teams in the Champions League, especially away from home.

Speaking on TNT Sports (13/08/25), the Tottenham legend said: “They more than held their own, they were the better team by far. I think Luis Enrique actually sort of apologised in a way when he went up to Thomas Frank at the end there.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“For me, when they analyse the performance, that will give them so much belief going into the Champions League. Playing against this great side that have won the Champions League, ‘we went toe-to-toe and more and over 90 minutes we were the better team’.

“The substitutions made the difference, but at the end of the day, they have got a Champions League to play and I think that’s a template. The way they played there, don’t be surprised if they play Liverpool, if they play Manchester City, if they play Arsenal – that’s a template to play in the Champions League and maybe away from home.

“That is something they will really grasp. They will look at that and analyse and say ‘we were the better team’. So that’s a template now to go on the front foot and go toe-to-toe with these teams. That is a massive performance from Tottenham tonight from a manager’s point of view.

“Yes, it’s emotional and disappointing because you are 2-0 up with 10 minutes to go and you’ve lost the trophy, but at the end of the day I think it’s a real positive night for Tottenham.”

Thomas Frank now has to show another string to his bow against Burnley

There was a lot to like about Tottenham’s performance from Udine, and Spurs fans can be relatively confident after this display that their side will be hard to score against when they come up against the top sides.

However, the Tottenham head coach’s defensive organisational skills have never been in doubt. If anything, some of Frank’s critics have accused him of being too defensive.
