Description

Tottenham Hotspur played out a 0-0 draw with Luton Town at the Kenilworth Stadium on Saturday after in their second match of their pre-season double header.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the game:

Guglielmo Vicario and Antonin Kinsky share minutes again for Tottenham

It was a rather drab ninety minutes of football from Tottenham Hotspur, who completed their second pre-season tie of the day in what was a back-to-back schedule.

There was not much to discuss from this clash in terms of standout moments. However, one detail did stand out – Thomas Frank once again chose to split the goalkeeping duties between his two primary options.

Last weekend, Frank handed 45 minutes to Guglielmo Vicario and another 45 to Antonin Kinsky in the clash against Reading.

While that was understandable, given it was the opening fixture of pre-season and an opportunity to give everyone a run-out, today’s decision was slightly more surprising.

Tottenham had already faced Wycombe Wanderers earlier in the day, so it would have made sense for either Vicario or Kinsky to play the full 90 minutes, or at least 60, with Brandon Austin or Luca Gunter finishing off the match.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Instead, Austin played the full game earlier on, while Vicario and Kinsky again split the second match evenly. The goalkeeper situation is one to keep an eye on – perhaps Frank’s first-choice between the sticks is not quite nailed on just yet.

Tottenham still have several missing players

While Frank was able to rotate almost the entire squad over the two friendlies, Tottenham Hotspur still have several notable absentees who are yet to feature in pre-season.

James Maddison, for one, returned to training earlier in the week but was not deemed fit enough for match action and sat out once again. Radu Dragusin and Dejan Kulusevski also remain sidelined, still working their way back from injury.

Dominic Solanke was expected to feature today but picked up a knock, while Rodrigo Bentancur missed out due to illness.

These issues do not appear serious, and the expectation is that all, aside from Dragusin and Kulusevski, should be available for the upcoming tour of Asia, where Spurs will continue their pre-season preparations.

Mikey Moore deployed in the number 10 role for Spurs

In this tie against Luton Town, Thomas Frank once more continued his tactical experiment of fielding two players in advanced central roles.

Previously against Reading, Mikey Moore and Alfie Devine were deployed as dual tens. This time around, Moore again started in that position but struggled to influence proceedings in the way he would have hoped.

It is a notable departure from his usage under former manager Ange Postecoglou, who typically deployed Moore out wide. We may be witnessing the early stages of a positional shift for the youngster in the Tottenham first-team setup.

Tottenham’s lack of full-back depth exposed again

Many would have raised an eyebrow when Jamie Donley slotted in at full-back to replace Destiny Udogie, who was withdrawn during the game.

This adjustment clearly affected Thomas Frank’s structure, as Yves Bissouma had to function as the pivot while also providing cover at right-back.

Donley, meanwhile, appeared to drift into the left-hand half spaces in midfield, while Brennan Johnson operated as a touchline winger tasked with stretching play and providing width.

The fact that Spurs could not call on a natural left-back to replace Udogie highlights just how threadbare their full-back options currently are. Injuries to Pedro Porro, Ben Davies or Udogie could leave Tottenham scrambling for emergency solutions once competitive matches begin.

There has been talk of Spurs looking to bring in another full-back, and today’s match reinforced why that must be a priority.

Spurs continue to struggle against low defensive blocks

A second clean sheet in three pre-season matches may be seen as a major positive for Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the goalless draw against Luton Town underlined one glaring issue that has persisted from last season – Spurs’ ongoing struggle to break down deep defensive blocks.

Luton were compact throughout the ninety minutes, happy to defend in numbers and limit the space for Tottenham’s wingers to operate in.

The League One outfit doubled up on the likes of Brennan Johnson and Mohammed Kudus, preventing them from making a real impact.

With several of Spurs’ creative players missing, Tottenham lacked incision and struggled to fashion clear chances.

This is something that must be addressed ahead of the new Premier League campaign, as stronger opposition will not only frustrate them defensively but also have the quality to punish them on the break.

A signing like Morgan Gibbs-White could help add that final-third spark, particularly when James Maddison or Dejan Kulusevski are not on the pitch.

Description

Spurs have now completed their final match in England before heading off to Asia for the next leg of their pre-season tour. The game at Luton Town was hardly a classic, but let’s take a look at our Tottenham player ratings.

It was another chance for Thomas Frank to assess his squad and offer opportunities to players hoping to force their way into his plans ahead of the new campaign.

Tottenham full-time player ratings vs Luton Town

Guglielmo Vicario – After a solid first-half display, Vicario was replaced by Antonin Kinsky in the second half. 7.

Djed Spence – Not the most convincing display from Spence on the right, as he struggled to deal with some of Luton Town’s attacking play on that side of the pitch. 5.

Micky van de Ven – A steady if unspectacular showing from the Dutchman, who was rarely troubled but did not overly impose himself either. 6.

Kevin Danso – Danso was subbed off in the 63rd minute for Junai Byfield, leaving the field with a clean sheet to his name, after offering support to Spence on the right when he was caught out. 7.

Jamie Donley – A very quiet second half from the young midfielder, who did not see much of the ball and had little effect on the game. 5.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Yves Bissouma – Bissouma showed some versatility in this clash, as he had to fill in at right back during the build-up and as a pivot midfielder, while also covering on the right when Tottenham were defending. Solid all-round display. 8.

Archie Gray – Gray looked to dictate the tempo of the game in the deeper role, as he aims to convince Frank to trust him ahead of the new season. He tried to look after the ball well in midfield when under pressure and also often looked to spray long balls to the wingers. 7.

Mikey Moore – Moore looked to get on the ball a lot more in the second half, but he often received it deep in midfield, as he searched for space outside of Luton’s low block. 5.

Mathys Tel – The Frenchman did not have that many chances in the second forty-five, but often looked to drop deep to get on the ball and offer another option during Spurs’ build-up. 5.

Brennan Johnson – A quiet second half from Johnson, who failed to affect play on the left wing. Often struggled to get beyond his man on that side. Had a shot in the box later in the second half, but it was saved by the Luton goalkeeper 5.

Mohammed Kudus – Struggled to create on the right of the Tottenham attack, as Luton Town often doubled up on him, limiting his creativity and effect on the game. 6.

Substitutes

Antonin Kinsky – Replaced Guglielmo Vicario in the second half and was quickly called into action following a well-driven volley from Luton Town early on. The Czech international showed his shot-stopping ability by dealing with it effectively. 7.

Junai Byfield – Replaced Kevin Danso in the second half and slotted in well alongside Micky van de Ven at the heart of defence. Looked comfortable with the ball at his feet. 7.

Alfie Devine – N/A.

Callum Olusesi – N/A.

Rio Kyerematen – N/A.

Yang Min-Hyeok – N/A.

Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny – N/A.

Will Lankshear – Came on late in the second half and had a chance in the closing stages of the game, but it was put wide. N/A

Description

A Serie A star is wanted by West Ham United and a host of other clubs in the Premier League, but Tottenham Hotspur are aware that he prefers a move to N17.

As Spurs try to resolve their legal battle with Nottingham Forest over Morgan Gibbs-White, it has been widely reported over recent days that Tottenham are now turning their attention to signing a number six.

It emerged earlier this month that Spurs have expressed an interest in bringing Douglas Luiz back to the Premier League after the midfielder expressed a desire to leave Juventus.

However, over recent days, some sources have claimed that West Ham are now plotting a move for Luiz, who is valued at around €23m-€25m (£19.8m-£21.6m).

Douglas Luiz prefers a move to Tottenham over West Ham

TBR Football have now confirmed that the Hammers are ‘pushing hard’ to sign the former Aston Villa star, who is not happy in Turin.

Graham Potter’s men are looking to complete as cheap a deal as possible and would prefer to land the 27-year-old on an initial loan deal with an option to make it permanent.

However, the outlet asserts that Luiz would prefer to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the London Stadium.

MORE SPURS STORIES

It is further revealed that Spurs officials are aware of the Juve star’s desire to join them, but the report does not say if Thomas Frank’s men are expected to press forward with an offer for the former Premier League star.

Three other Premier League clubs also want Luiz

TBR Football say that West Ham are currently in the process of offloading Guido Rodriguez so that they can free up space for Luiz’s arrival.

The East London club are said to be making inroads in their negotiations with the Binaconeri, but Nottingham Forest are also speaking to the midfielder.

Additionally, Everton are now ‘pushing very hard’ to land Luiz, while Fulham have also enquired about the 27-year-old’s situation.

Description

Tottenham fans could get an important clue on whether Morgan Gibbs-White’s move to N17 is any closer to going through this evening.

It has now been 15 days since Tottenham met Morgan Gibbs-White’s £60m release clause, but the transfer has ground to a complete halt.

According to reports, Spurs are frustrated that the deal for Gibbs-White is not progressing, with the legal mess between Nottingham Forest and the North London club continuing to drag on.

Over recent days, several sources have indicated that Gibbs-White remains extremely keen on completing a move to Tottenham and has informed the Forest hierarchy of his wishes.

All eyes on Nottingham Forest and Morgan Gibbs-White as Tottenham continue to wait

The 25-year-old has been training with Nuno Espirito Santo’s men in Portugal over the last few days, which is a clear indication that his move to N17 is not close to going through right now.

Forest will take on Fulham in a pre-season friendly at SC Farense’s Estadio de Sao Luis at 8 pm this evening.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Gibbs-White did feature in the Midlands club’s friendly against Monaco last Saturday, and all eyes will be on the teamsheet this afternoon to see if the midfielder is named in the starting eleven as Tottenham Hotspur fans continue to look for hints that the deal is progressing.

Spurs have considered making a bigger offer for Gibbs-White

It was reported by The Daily Mail a couple of days ago that Tottenham have held discussions about making a £65m offer for Morgan Gibbs-White.

However, the North London club are unclear if such an offer will be enough to clinch the deal, with Forest not sending any signals over what they want.

Three Tottenham winners and three losers from 2-2 Wycombe Wanderers draw in pre-season

Three Tottenham winners and three losers from 2-2 Wycombe Wanderers draw in pre-season - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur continued their pre-season preparations with a closely contested draw with Wycombe Wanderers, and three players managed to stand out, including a bright, young talent.

Tottenham Hotspur locked horns with Wycombe Wanderers in a pre-season game, which was far from easy. Despite controlling the game, Thomas Frank’s men entered the halftime break with the score level.

Their struggles continued in the second half, as Wycombe took a surprise lead. In the end, Spurs had to settle for a draw at Hotspur Way. However, the important thing was getting more minutes in the tank and allowing Frank to better assess his squad.

Here are the three Tottenham players who put in top-notch displays and three others who failed to get up and running:

Pape Matar Sarr was at the double for Tottenham

Pape Matar Sarr enjoys taking shots from distance, and while they do not always hit their target, he has scored a few screamers since landing in North London. Today, the midfielder played a more attacking role, which often saw him arriving in the box.

Sarr was clinical, scoring twice from close range. A neutral tuning in for the first time could be excused for believing the 22-year-old is a natural striker.

One of Sarr’s main problems last season was that he was not overly consistent. However, he has shown that on his day, he is a sound player in the middle of the park.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tynan Thompson enjoyed a rare cameo

Tynan Thompson has played most of his football for Tottenham U18s, but he featured for the U21s against Leyton Orient in the week, getting himself a goal in the process.

The 17-year-old replaced Richarlison just after the hour mark against Wycombe, and he looked electric, with his pacey dribbling and clever lay-offs.

The highlight for Thompson was when he assisted Sarr for Tottenham’s second goal with a grounded cross. He even came close to scoring the winner after making a good run into space, but his finishing let him down. Overall, it was a very positive showing from the youngster, who looks like a talented left winger.

Wilson Odobert surprised Tottenham supporters

Wilson Odobert did not have the easiest debut season at Tottenham. He was kept out for some time with injuries, and he failed to break into the first team. With the arrival of Mohammed Kudus, it looked like Odobert would really struggle for minutes during the upcoming campaign.

The Frenchman is certainly working to ensure that is not the case. He was very good today against Wycombe, offering relentless running and an attacking threat. Also, it was his shot which led to Sarr opening the scoring for Spurs.

It is important to remember that Odobert is not yet the finished product. He is only 20 years old and has plenty of time to develop as a player. His 60-minute showing today will definitely have helped his cause ahead of the new season.

Cristian Romero showed immaturity

Now, onto the less impressive players, and one player who makes the list for a reason other than his footballing performance is Cristian Romero.

The defender will probably be disappointed that he was part of a defence which conceded twice against a League One team. However, the main issue with the Argentine was when he lost his temper and swung his arm at an opposing player. The referee overlooked the situation, but in a competitive game, he would not be as lucky.

Romero wore the captain’s armband last Saturday, and with Heung-min Son linked with a move to LAFC, there is a realistic chance of him permanently taking up the role. This could change, though, if Romero fails to show he is responsible enough to lead by example. To throw an arm in a training ground pre-season friendly is not a good look.

Brandon Austin was at fault for the first goal Tottenham conceded

It was a shame Brandon Austin was only selected to make three appearances for Spurs last season, because he appeared to be a solid shot-stopper. Having said this, the Wycombe game was a totally different story.

Austin faced a shot which was aimed straight at him, and he let it into the back of the net. It was almost as bad as when Harry Kane decided to fill in as a goalkeeper in the Europa League a decade ago, only to concede in comical fashion. The goal was actually a turning point in the game, as Spurs had been in complete control up to that point.

Perhaps the Tottenham academy graduate could be cut some slack due to his lack of competitive matches, but he has surely thrown away any chance of playing more often.

Richarlison failed to make a difference for Tottenham

Richarlison has a big season ahead of him, should he remain at Tottenham. If he does not impress Frank, it is highly likely he will be sold before his contract expires.

Today was his first pre-season appearance, so showcasing some rustiness is to be expected. The Brazilian did have a goalscoring chance, which he failed to convert, but other than that, it was a quiet performance from the man who started the Europa League final.

Richarlison will be hoping for an injury-free season so he can play as much as possible, but his selection in the team can only be guaranteed if he performs well. He certainly needs to up his game the next time he is in the starting lineup.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur face Luton Town in their second pre-season friendly of the day before they head overseas to continue their preparations.

Head coach Thomas Frank has had a busy day, having also watched some of his Tottenham players draw 2-2 with Wycombe Wanderers in a separate friendly earlier this morning with Pape Matar Sarr scoring both goals.

The two clubs have been in recent dialogue after Luton completed the signing of Josh Keeley on a permanent transfer.

Today is Luton’s final friendly of their pre-season as they begins their preparations for a campaign in League One following their relegation from the Championship.

What is the Tottenham team vs Luton Town?

In Tottenham’s 2-0 win against Reading last weekend, Thomas Frank decided to give 22 players 45 minutes each at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

With the final members of the Tottenham first-team squad, including Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and Archie Gray having reported back, Frank decided to split his squad for two separate matches to ensure his players get sufficient minutes into their legs.

Frank selected the likes of Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero, Richarlison, Ben Davies and Pedro Porro to appear in the earlier fixture.

MORE SPURS STORIES

There is no Dominic Solanke in the match day squad which will certainly raise an eyebrow over any potential fitness issues.

This is the Tottenham team which faces Luton Town:

Tottenham Hotspur: Vicario, Spence, Van de Ven, Danso, Udogie, Bissouma, Gray, Moore, Tel, Johnson, Kudus

Subs: Kinsky, Gunter, Scarlett, Donley, Yang, Lankshear, Devine, Kyerematen, Byfield, Rowswell, Russell-Denny, Olusesi

Who do Tottenham also play in pre-season?

Following the match at Kenilworth Road, Tottenham are next in action on July 31st when they face North London rivals Arsenal in Hong Kong.

Following the Arsenal clash, a match against Newcastle United in Seoul will take place, before heading back to Europe for yet another pre-season date with Bayern Munich.

Preparations step up another notch when Tottenham play PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 13th, with the Premier League campaign starting four days later with the visit of Burnley to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham fans will be hoping the club can get their act together in the transfer market and get some further quality players through the door prior to the PSG match.

Why Rodrigo Bentancur was replaced in the Tottenham starting XI at last minute - Spurs Web
Description

Rodrigo Bentancur was withdrawn from the pre-season friendly against Wycombe Wanderers just before kick-off, and Alasdair Gold has now revealed Tottenham’s reason behind doing so.

Tottenham Hotspur play two pre-season friendlies today, with their clash against Wycombe at Hotspur Way now finished and a different team set to travel to Luton Town later this afternoon.

Thomas Frank has confirmed that two evenly matched Tottenham teams will play against Wycombe and Luton, and that is demonstrated by his team selection.

The Dane named a strong side to take on the League One side, but curiously, even though Rodrigo Bentancur was named in the starting line-up, the midfielder did not take to the pitch.

Alasdair Gold reveals the reason for Rodrigo Bentancur’s Tottenham absence

It was academy midfielder George Abbott who took to the field instead of Bentancur against Wycombe, with the Uruguayan removed from the matchday squad.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that the former Juventus star missed out on the game after coming down with an illness.

MORE SPURS STORIES

He explained that Abbott was initially expected to be part of the Spurs squad which travelled to Luton this afternoon, but after Bentancur fell ill, he was swapped for the 19-year-old around half an hour before kick-off.

Does Thomas Frank’s Spurs team selection shed light on his plans?

The team selection for the two friendlies does not give too much of a hint on who is ahead in Frank’s pecking order, with two very evenly matched teams being named for both fixtures.

However, it is interesting to note that Tottenham have once again been set up in a 4-2-3-1, which seems to be the formation that Frank will predominantly employ next season.

We have seen from the Reading clash that Frank wants to build up with three at the back, with one full-back tucking in and the other pushing up and wide.

Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-2 pre-season draw with Wycombe Wanderers

Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-2 pre-season draw with Wycombe Wanderers - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur played out a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers at Hotspur Way on Saturday morning in their first match of a rare pre-season double header.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the game:

Three at the back in the build-up for Tottenham

We got another interesting glimpse into Thomas Frank’s new Tottenham system this morning against Wycombe Wanderers. Although, on paper, the formation is a 4-2-3-1, that is not always the case in the build-up. Particularly today, we saw Ben Davies tuck in off the left-hand side to create a back three when Tottenham were building attacks, shifting alongside Cristian Romero and Luka Vuskovic. This freed up Pedro Porro to roam further forward.

It all comes back to Frank’s old saying: “You need to take risks, otherwise you also take risks.” The change in shape during build-ups will certainly lead to overloads and goals for Tottenham Hotspur, but they may be caught on the break with such a narrow back three at times.

Pedro Porro post-Postecoglou

Pedro Porro’s role this morning was one of the most interesting on the pitch. With the back three in the build-up, you would assume that Porro would then push high and wide to create width and an overload at the back post. The Spaniard certainly did that at times, but he more often popped up in central roles in the final third. It was a real throwback to the early inverted days under Ange Postecoglou when Porro and Destiny Udogie almost played as number 10s.

I wonder whether Thomas Frank is fashioning a very specific role for Porro this season due to his immense creative ability. It was also interesting to see the fluid relationship between Porro and Wilson Odobert on the right side, with the duo constantly swapping between wide runner and inverted creator.

Luka Vuskovic looks ready for Tottenham

It can be easy to make wild and early conclusions from pre-season football. However, regardless of the goal against Reading or the performance against Wycombe, Luka Vuskovic looks ready for the set-up. Despite still being a teenager, he seems to have the calm head required for a Premier League club, and hasn’t looked out of place for a second alongside the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. He looks comfortable in possession, positive with his passing, and reads the game really nicely for one so young.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Unfortunately, there is one major hurdle in his way – competition. Tottenham look unlikely to sell Radu Dragusin this summer, which means Vuskovic has Romero, Van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Dragusin, and Ben Davies to compete with for two spots. The simple truth is that he probably won’t get enough game time to elevate his development to the next level, which is why Spurs may opt for a loan instead.

Pape Sarr in the number 10 role

There wasn’t much to write home about regarding Pape Sarr’s performance itself, beyond scoring the tap-in rebound to make it 1-0 and producing a nice touch and finish to make it 2-2. So, how did he managed to score a brace without completely running the show? It was Sarr’s position that was extremely interesting today, rather than necessarily the man who occupied it.

Playing in the number 10 role, which you expect will eventually be occupied by the likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, or hopefully Morgan Gibbs-White, Sarr functioned more as a second forward than a midfielder. The Senegal star was seen right up alongside Richarlison more often than not, and even made runs past the Tottenham number nine to stretch the defence. Whoever occupies this role for Tottenham in the first team is going to need to be full of running and clinical in front of goal.

Wilson Odobert was Tottenham’s Man of the Match

One would have expected Wilson Odobert to look a little sloppy today. After all, this is his first pre-season match following his involvement in the U21 European Championships. However, the Frenchman was arguably Tottenham’s most dangerous player. He developed a fantastic understanding with Pedro Porro on the right side, dovetailing as both a wide winger and an inverted number ten to great effect.

Out wide, he latched onto multiple pinpoint passes behind the lines from Porro, before delivering some dangerous crosses. When cutting inside, he looked a creative outlet and a very real goal threat, as evidenced by his sharp turn and shot that led to Tottenham’s opening goal. Thomas Frank is known for developing inverted right-wingers into goalscoring machines, so Odobert could be a player to keep an eye on.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur played out a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers this morning as Thomas Frank handed 60 minutes to some of his first-team stars.

Tottenham player ratings vs Wycombe Wanderers

Brandon Austin – 3 – Made an absolute blunder for Wycombe’s first goal, despite the shot being straight at him. Not what he wanted from a rare Tottenham start.

Pedro Porro – 7.5 – A real creative outlet for Tottenham today. With Frank using a back three in the build-up, Porro was given freedom to roam, both out wide and into an inverted role. The Spaniard threaded some really nice balls in behind the Wycombe defence for Odobert to chase.

Luka Vuskovic – 6.5 – Could have got a little tighter in the build-up to Wycombe’s second goal. That being said, he generally reads the game really well and seems to match Romero’s front-footed style nicely. Very positive with his passing and progressive play in the build-up.

Cristian Romero – 6 – A heart-in-mouth moment when Romero seemed to swing an elbow at his opponent, but the Spurs star got away with it. Up until then, Romero had been quite reserved, getting on with his defending in his usual front-footed style. Once again, his progressive passing through the lines remains extremely underrated.

Ben Davies – 4 – Davies was far too easy to skip past as Wycombe cut in off the right to score their first goal. However, with Frank using a back three in the build-up, Davies could be a useful utility player, with vast experience in that kind of hybrid role. The position should also really suit Micky Van de Ven.

George Abbott – 7 – You can see why Tottenham rate this kid so highly. Abbott was full of pressing and running, particularly impressing in the second half when others tired. He reads play expertly in the middle of the pitch and makes interceptions look like the easiest thing in the world. Spurs need to get Abbott a good loan further up the EPL this season.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Lucas Bergvall – 7 – Looked so comfortable and assured in the centre of the pitch. With youngsters coming off the bench, Bergvall actually presents himself as one of the senior stars now. Created some really nice time and space with his drops of the shoulder and perhaps puts his name in the hat for some minutes in the number six role this season.

Pape Matar Sarr – 8 – Tottenham’s new goalscoring threat. Pape Sarr played as a number 10 this morning, but he spent most of his time either alongside or beyond the striker. Tapped home a rebound from Odobert’s shot to open the scoring, then equalised at 2-2 with a nice touch and finish in the box. Sarr wasn’t involved too much in the first half but came into his own with his relentless running in the second 45 when others tired.

Wilson Odobert – 8 – Tottenham’s most impressive player on the day, despite only playing 60 minutes. Odobert was a bright spark in his first pre-season match, full of running out wide down the right wing, but also a danger man when inverted into more of a number ten role. He created Spurs’ opening goal with a sharp turn and shot, which then rebounded for Sarr to tap home. Looks like he could be a good fit for Thomas Frank.

Richarlison – 5 – It wasn’t Richarlison’s day. Beyond mistiming a good headed chance, the Brazilian barely got a look in. A couple of nice hold-up play moments, but that was about it from Richy. He came off at the 60-minute mark as Tottenham look to build up his fitness slowly.

Heung-min Son – 5 – Not up to his best this morning. Sonny made every effort to take defenders on, but he still seems to be finding his sharpness in pre-season. Ballooned one shot over the bar early and had a few others blocked. He looked at his best when flashing the ball across the box for others to come on to.

Substitutes:

Oliver Irow – 5 – Came on for Richarlison with 30 minutes to go.

Tynan Thompson – 7 – The 17-year-old came off the bench for Wilson Odobert and instantly announced himself in a Spurs shirt by assisting Pape Sarr. Thompson turned out to be one of the stars of the show in the second half. A real livewire!

Description

Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed what Yoane Wissa is expected to do after Tottenham Hotspur signalled an interest in signing him this summer.

While a number of reports backed Tottenham to press ahead with a move for Wissa earlier this month, the rumours linking the 28-year-old with a move to N7 have gone quiet over the last weeks.

Plenty of outlets are now reporting that Newcastle United are stepping up their interest in Wissa, while some sources have indicated that Wissa is no longer seen as a priority by Spurs.

In fact, earlier this week, Newcastle even reportedly had a £25m bid for Wissa rejected by Brentford, and now, we have heard what the DR Congo international is thinking about his future.

Yoane Wissa has informed Brentford that he wants to leave

Ben Jacobs has now revealed that the centre-forward is keen on tasting Champions League football next season and believes that opportunity may never come again if he does not make a switch to either Newcastle or Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The former Lorient man does not plan on going on strike, but he has informed his employers that he wants a new challenge.

Jacobs said on the Market Madness podcast: “So Wissa has made it clear to Brentford he wants to leave. Brentford want Wissa to sign a new deal. So there is a big gulf in each side’s position.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“But instead of agitating for a move or going on strike like Gyokeres did, Wissa has to speak to the Brentford hierarchy.

“And my understanding is that he will say very clearly that he would like to leave because he feels at his age, this is his last opportunity to go and play Champions League football. And both Spurs and Newcastle have that and can offer it to him imminently.”

Wissa prefers a Tottenham move over Newcastle

According to various updates over the past week, Wissa is expected to favour a move to Spurs ahead of Newcastle if both clubs make offers.

However, that does not mean he will turn down a move to the Magpies, with Greame Bailey revealing on Wednesday that Wissa is also in favour of a switch to St James’ Park.
