Top five Ange Postecoglou quotes from his time at Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs Web
Description

Following Tottenham Hotspur’s sacking of Ange Postecoglou, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane, looking back at some of his best quotes. Let’s take a look through our top five from the last two years in North London.

Ange Postecoglou’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur has sparked mixed reactions from Spurs fans, with some believing that his poor league campaign was enough for a sacking, while others cannot wrap their heads around why the club has sacked a manager who delivered silverware after a 17-year drought.

Tottenham have since issued a lengthy statement following Ange Postecoglou’s sacking, thanking the Australian manager for his commitment to the club and for being one of three managers to deliver European silverware to the N17 club.

Postecoglou undoubtedly has given several Spurs fans a memory that will live long in their hearts, following the Europa League triumph in Bilbao, Spain.

The manager was one who always stood to defend the club each time the media looked to diminish Tottenham’s standing and success. He also ended the club’s banter era and delivered on his second-season trophy promise.

Indeed, Ange Postecoglou has etched his name into Tottenham folklore, and now we have decided to take a trip down memory lane to relive some of his quotes in his two years at Hotspur Way.

Coming in at number five of some of his best quotes as a Spurs manager was the absolute gem he gave us during the trophy parade, where Ange Postecoglou stated that season three is always better than season two.

MORE SPURS STORIES

This quote could simply have been number one if the manager had been given a chance to live up to his statement, but unfortunately, he was axed before the start of the movie following his audition.

His quote: “I told them and they laughed. I told them and they did not believe, but here we are and we are here because of this unbelievable group of people – players, staff – absolute heroes.

“Led by the legend Heung-min Son, Cuti Romero, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario – all of them heroes. And they did it all for you because you deserve it.

“This club deserves it. And I will tell you something, I leave you with this – all the best television series, season three is better than season two.”

Coming in at number four is Postecoglou calling out Daniel Levy after he delivered the Europa League to Hotspur Way.

The Australian was quick to state that Daniel Levy did not see him as a winner when he appointed him, but he did not hesitate to let the club’s chairman know that he is a winner as well, even though many downplay his success because it did not happen in Europe’s top leagues.

He said: “I remember even when I signed, the club and even Daniel said, ‘we went after winners, it did not work and now we have got Ange,’ but mate, I am a winner. I have been a serial winner my whole career. It is what I have done more than anything else.

“I know people talk about my football, which I am very proud of. I know people dismiss my achievements because they did not happen on this side of the world, but for me, they were all hard-earned and all I have done my whole career is win things.”

Third is Ange Postecoglou’s quote on how football can provide escapism for fans, and this one is really emotional, given the circumstances surrounding it, following the unrest in the Middle East.

The manager reminded us of how he sees football and the impact it can have on people who are struggling, and how it can often unite a diverse group of people.

He said, “Well, it is not business as usual. That is not how we see our role. Our role, like I said, is to provide our supporters with something that you know they want to see in their football team.

“When we go out there on Monday night there will be 60,000 out there – and hundreds of thousands around the world – who just want to see their football team play some exciting football and win a game and give them that joy that only football can bring.

“Because, you know, when you score in that last minute to win a game of football, you do not care who is next to you. Do you? You do not care where they come from, what they think or what they believe. You are united as one for that moment.

“That is what football provides. It can provide. And I think that is our role. It is always our role, irrespective of what the current climate is or what the climate might be next week or in weeks to come.

“Football, like I said, maybe I am not using the right term, but it is a form of escapism for a lot of people for those moments, providing some comfort, feeling like you are part of something bigger. That is always our role as a football club.”

Speaking about how he processes the events of the past two weeks, Postecoglou added: “I have always felt that I am not a custodian of any football club.

“I have the responsibility of being a football manager like everyone else, I am a human being and you struggle with these things, and you understand that other people will struggle with them.

“My life experience has taught me not to judge or come to any strong conclusions. I will let the people who are affected by it be the guide in these kinds of things. Because it is very easy for others to cast judgement but in all these things, you are guided by people who are directly affected.

“And all I can do as a football manager within our football club is try and provide support, advice, and guidance in the best way I can and the best way a football club can to anyone who is struggling with these things.

“Again, I have always felt football – in sport, in general, especially football, the greatest role I can play is just that – and it sounds trivial at times – but it is, it can be a form of escapism.

“Ninety, 95 minutes where you can take people who are struggling with wherever they are in life just away from it, just for a little while, waiting for that period of time that you know you are around supporting their football club.

“And maybe within that context, we can provide some sort of small solace or comfort or, or even a little bit of joy that takes them away from whatever they are going through. But yes, that is where I have gone.

“I do not try and sort of interject myself into these things because, you know, there are things I do know about, my own sort of upbringing. And, you know, I know about what it feels like to be an immigrant and I can talk strongly about those kinds of things. But my family has never been involved in the war. So it is not for me to cast judgement on it.”

In number two is Postecoglou’s reaction to winning Tottenham the Europa League, after the club’s 17-year wait for a major honour and a 41-year wait for a European piece of silverware.

His words ultimately marked the end of the club’s banter era as he backed his constant defence of the club with a piece of silverware.

He also spoke about how delighted he was to make Spurs fans happy after a long season that was mostly filled with lows but ended with a major high.

He said: “I love how it has made people feel, it has filled a massive hole that they have had for so long, so that they now can proudly say their club is a trophy winner.

“It is a champion of a competition. There is no more this slight of ‘you are a great club, but you have never won anything’, that is done and I am super proud of that.”

The biggest quote of them all was Ange Postecoglou’s famous ‘I always win things in my second season‘. The fact that he backed it up makes it one of the coldest lines in football history.

Not once in any press conference did the manager back down from his original quote, with Postecoglou constantly doubling down on his original statement. It says a lot about his mentality and the belief he had in this group of players.

He said: “Usually in my second season, I win things. That is the whole idea. First year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. Hopefully, the second year is going on to win things.

“Of course, it is easier said than done, particularly in the Premier League and the competitions we are in. But, that is always the way I have looked at it, is that the second year you should be in a position where you can push on, depending on how the first year has gone.

“Last year we had some really good moments, obviously we also had some tough moments. I think we learnt as much from the tough moments as we did from the good stuff and hopefully, that means we are in a good place. We are definitely a better-prepared team than we were last year.”

Ange Postecoglou has clearly left a major mark on the Tottenham Hotspur squad, with tributes continuing to pour in from the players since his sacking was announced.

Many Spurs fans are livid with the club’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou despite Europa League success, and it appears that the sentiment inside the dressing room is not too dissimilar.

Others, such as Pedro Porro and Richarlison have thanked Postecoglou for the role he played in their careers, and now even more emotional tributes have poured in from some of their teammates.

The most heartfelt and personal message so far has come from Guglielmo Vicario, who thanked the 59-year-old for showing belief in him right from the pair’s very first conversation two years ago before he arrived at Tottenham.

Van de Ven posted a very similar message while Lucas Bergvall and Kevin Danso thanked him for helping create history in Bilbao.

Tottenham confirm three more exits but two of Ange Postecoglou’s coaches will stay - Spurs Web
Description

Ange Postecoglou has been removed as manager of Tottenham Hotspur and three members of his coaching staff will also leave Hotspur Way this summer.

It has been an emotional few days at Tottenham with members of staff departing the club. Donna-Maria Cullen stepped down from the Spurs board last Monday, having been a director for three decades.

Later that same day, Ryan Mason left his role as Tottenham’s assistant manager to become the new head coach of West Bromwich Albion. The 33-year-old has twice been an interim manager for the club following the sackings of Jose Mourinho and Cristian Stellini.

The week ended as it started, as another key figure left the club. Tottenham made the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou, despite the campaign ending with a Europa League victory.

Three Tottenham coaches set to leave with Ange Postecoglou

The theme of the week at Spurs looks set to continue, with more members of the coaching staff set to depart the club. Matt Law has revealed he understands Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo are all going to leave Tottenham.

This news comes after it was reported Tottenham players were threatening to leave the club after Postecoglou was sacked.

However, Matt Wells and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch wish to remain at the club. It is currently unknown whether the appointment of a new manager would impact their futures.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Montgomery and Raimundo only arrived at Spurs last season, while Jedinak was brought in by Postecoglou when he was appointed as the new Tottenham manager. Burch arrived at the same time, while Wells was already at the club, having joined a few months before.

Spurs will need to start all over again with a new manager

The decision to sack Postecoglou is proving to be controversial, but there is no turning back. Spurs must look forward and secure a new manager, before letting him build his own coaching team.

The fact that the departing coaches were brought in by Postecoglou means it makes sense for them to leave the club. Whoever Tottenham decide to appoint should be given the choice as to who they want to support them, which includes having a say on whether Burch and Wells remain at Hotspur Way.

Description

Ange Postecoglou’s departure may be the spark that triggers a mini-exodus at Tottenham, with several key players now considering their futures at the club. Here are five Tottenham players who might leave Spurs this summer, following the sacking of Postecoglou.

Despite receiving significant support from his Tottenham Hotspur players, Ange Postecoglou was handed his marching orders just yesterday by chairman Daniel Levy.

Ironically, the decision came on the Australian’s two-year anniversary at the helm, a sacking that now makes him the 15th manager to be dismissed by club chairman Daniel Levy.

Several Tottenham players have paid tribute to Postecoglou, with many thanking him for delivering long-awaited silverware, and club captain Heung-min Son even labelled the 59-year-old a Spurs legend in his message.

However, according to a report by The Telegraph, some Tottenham players have been left furious by the club’s decision to sack Postecoglou and are weighing up exits this summer.

We have now put together a list of five Spurs players who could be heading for the exit door following Postecoglou’s departure.

Cristian Romero linked with Atletico Madrid move

The Argentine centre-back’s future has been uncertain for some time, with Cristian Romero refusing to sign a new deal despite Tottenham’s offer, and just two years remaining on his current contract.

MORE SPURS STORIES

There had been some hope that qualification for the UEFA Champions League might sway Romero’s decision, but even with Spurs lifting the Europa League trophy, the 27-year-old still needs some convincing, as Atletico Madrid circles.

Atletico are reportedly keen to push ahead with a move for Romero this summer, regardless of Tottenham’s stance, and journalist Dan Kilpatrick has previously stated that Romero’s decision could hinge on Postecoglou’s presence.

Postecoglou had already urged Tottenham to keep Romero at Spurs, and one would imagine that if the Australian manager remained at the club, he would have done everything he could to convince the Argentine to sign a new deal.

But the 59-year-old has since been dismissed, leaving the chances of Romero staying at Tottenham slimmer than ever.

Pedro Porro would be frustrated by Tottenham’s decision to sack Postecoglou

Pedro Porro was among the most vocal supporters of Ange Postecoglou when rumours of his potential dismissal began to surface.

The Spanish full-back openly defended the manager, expressing disbelief that the club would even consider parting ways with someone who had united the dressing room and brought the best out of him on the pitch.

Despite his public backing, the club hierarchy went ahead with the sacking. Porro has since paid tribute to the former boss, thanking him for believing in him, and given Manchester City’s reported interest in Porro, the 25-year-old could be tempted by a fresh start.

Heung-min Son quickly rallied behind Postecoglou following Tottenham’s Europa League triumph, and in the wake of the Australian’s dismissal, he was among the first to hail him as a Tottenham legend.

A summer of upheaval is already underway at the club, with a high-level executive departing, Ryan Mason stepping down from his coaching role, and now the man in the dugout gone too.

Reports earlier in the week suggested that Tottenham were open to the idea of parting ways with Son, and given the wholesale changes at the club, it would not be surprising if the captain considered a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Rodrigo Bentancur yet to agree new deal as Atletico Madrid circle

Rodrigo Bentancur has entered the final year of his contract, and while Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to extend his stay, the midfielder has not yet signed a new deal.

Bentancur is said to be awaiting clarity on the club’s next managerial appointment before making a decision, and Postecoglou’s departure is sure to throw fresh doubt over his future.

Atletico Madrid are monitoring Bentancur’s situation closely, and if the 27-year-old is not convinced by the club’s next steps, it would not be a shock to see him consider a move away from north London should the right opportunity arise.

Dejan Kulusevski could reunite with Conte in Italy

Another top player who could consider his future at Tottenham Hotspur is Dejan Kulusevski, who has been linked with a move away from north London, with Italian clubs said to be interested in the Swede.

Conte is reported to be keen on reuniting with Kulusevski, and while it was revealed that the 24-year-old was not considering a move away from Spurs anytime soon, the departure of Postecoglou could change Kulusevski’s mind.

Interestingly, it was also reported that the versatile midfielder is not against a move to Italy, and that a transfer there is one that could appeal to the Spurs man in the future.

Description

The race for the Tottenham managerial hot seat has undergone a major twist, with Marco Silva emerging as the frontrunner to replace Ange Postecoglou, according to multiple outlets.

Since Postecoglou’s sacking was confirmed on Friday, it has been widely reported that Thomas Frank had emerged as Tottenham’s top choice.

Various sources reported that Spurs are ready to advance in talks with Frank over the coming days as the club aims to quickly fill the vacancy.

However, things now appear to be changing, with multiple outlets suggesting that Silva is now emerging as the leading contender for the N17 hot seat.

Tottenham seriously considering appointing Marco Silva

According to inews, Tottenham’s move for Frank is far from a done deal yet, with the Lilywhites also ‘seriously considering’ a move for the Fulham boss.

The report claims that Silva has long-term admirers at Spurs and has been sounded out by the club on more than one occasion over recent years.

In fact, it is alleged that he was one of the candidates on Tottenham’s radar to replace Antonio Conte in 2023 before they eventually turned to Postecoglou.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The Portuguese coach’s representatives have now been sounded out by Spurs again, with the 47-year-old emerging as a strong alternative for Frank.

Spurs ‘very close’ to appointing the Fulham manager

A report in Record takes it a step further and claims that Marco Silva is ‘very close’ to taking the Tottenham job after being contacted by the North Londoners.

The outlet claims that an agreement between the Fulham boss and Spurs is now on the cusp of being finalised, with the former Everton boss set to make a move across London.

Tottenham rejected by Roberto De Zerbi as they look for Ange Postecoglou replacement - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are set to push ahead with a move for an experienced Premier League manager after an Italian coach turned down the chance to replace Ange Postecoglou at N17.

As expected, the decision to sack Postecoglou has not gone down well with many Spurs fans, who felt that the Australian had earned the opportunity to build on the Europa League success.

Tottenham explained that they had decided to sack Postecoglou after significant reflection, pointing out that the 59-year-old has managed to get just 78 points from the club’s last 66 Premier League games.

According to reports, Spurs are expected to make a managerial appointment by next week, having already narrowed down on their top candidates.

Roberto De Zerbi has rejected Tottenham’s approach

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Tottenham approached Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi over recent days about replacing Postecoglou.

However, the former Brighton boss turned down the advances and made it clear that he wants to remain with the Ligue 1 giants.

Romano confirms that Spurs have now identified Thomas Frank as their leading candidate and are expected to hold talks with the Dane over the coming days.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Roberto De Zerbi would have softened the blow of losing Ange Postecoglou

An appointment such as De Zerbi would have signalled ambition from Spurs and made Postecoglou’s sacking much easier to digest for Tottenham Hotspur fans.

While Thomas Frank’s credentials cannot be doubted, given what he has achieved at Brentford with minimal resources, the Dane’s appointment may not inspire the fan base in the same way.

The worry for Spurs is that, just as we saw with the Nuno Espirito Santo situation a few years ago, Frank may find it very difficult to overcome those doubts and win over the supporters.

Description

It is not just Ange Postecoglou who has been relieved of his duties over the past 24 hours, with reports indicating that another senior Tottenham official has also been sacked by Daniel Levy.

It has been widely reported that there are expected to be wholesale changes at Tottenham this summer, and that is now materialising.

Donna-Maria Cullen has stepped down from the club’s board while Ryan Mason has left the club to take over as West Brom’s head coach. Experienced Spurs academy coach, Paul Bracewell, was also dismissed at the start of the summer.

After a long wait, it was confirmed on Friday that Ange Postecoglou had been sacked by Tottenham after a thorough review of the team’s performance.

Now, it appears that exit number five could be on the cards, with another high-profile Tottenham figure given his marching orders by chairman Daniel Levy.

Scott Munn has been sacked by Daniel Levy at Tottenham

According to reports, fellow Australian Scott Munn is also set to follow his compatriot out the door.

The 51-year-old joined as Tottenham’s chief football officer two years ago but, according to various journalists, including The Sun’s Tom Barclay, he has now been removed from the role by Daniel Levy.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham announced the appointment of Vinai Venkatesham as their new CEO back in April, and the former Arsenal official has now begun his work at Hotspur Way ahead of the new season.

Another big change is around the corner at Spurs

We are expected to see further big moves over the coming days and weeks, with many outlets claiming that Fabio Paratici is expected to return to Tottenham in an official role.

The Italian previously held the role of managing director of football at the club and was forced to resign following his FIFA ban, which is now set to expire.

Lucas Bergvall reveals how it felt to miss out on Tottenham’s Europa League final - Spurs Web
Description

Lucas Bergvall has been speaking about his ‘crazy’ first season at Tottenham Hotspur and has opened up on how he felt when he knew that his injury had ruled him out of the Europa League final.

From an individual perspective, the Swede could not have hoped for his first season in the Premier League to have gone any better.

While it is arguable if he would have got as many opportunities if not for the club’s injury crisis, the youngster certainly grabbed them with both hands, with Bergvall sweeping all of Tottenham’s end-of-season awards.

The youngster has been rewarded with a new six-year contract and according to some reports, Bergvall is now in a similar salary bracket to the highest earners at Spurs.

Lucas Bergvall opens up on Tottenham frustration

It felt like the 19-year-old’s fairytale season was building to the ultimate climax, with the stage being set for the midfielder to dominate in the showpiece event in Bilbao.

However, the youngster picked up an ankle injury just a couple of weeks before the final and even though Bergvall worked very hard to recover in time for the final, the clash at San Mames came too quickly for him.

Thankfully, his teammates got the job done in the final without him and the Sweden international has now opened up what was going through his mind when he realised that he will not be featuring in what would have been the biggest game of his career so far.

MORE SPURS STORIES

When asked about missing the Europa League final, Bergvall told Tottenham’s official website: “At first it was really frustrating and so disappointing knowing I wouldn’t be part of it, in terms of playing. But then I knew I had to support the lads, support the team, just help wherever I could, just to be positive and to be there for them.”

When asked about his rehabilitation, the midfielder responded: “I’m getting better every day. I’m still here training and rehabbing and I’ve done that for about two weeks now. I’m going on holiday soon, but I just want to make sure everything is right.”

Bergvall says there is more to come from next season

The teenager admitted that things could not have gone much better for him in his first season in England after arriving straight from Allsvenskan.

Bergvall confessed that training with world-class players at Hotspur Way regularly has elevated his game and he whetted the appetite of Spurs fans by suggesting that there is a lot more to come from him.

When asked about sweeping all of the awards in his first season at Tottenham, the former Djurgardens man said: “It’s been crazy. I’ve learned a lot this year, both on and off the pitch, just training every day here with some of the top players in the world, the staff.

“I’m so grateful for this season and for everyone helping me to achieve these awards. It’s such a big honour. I can’t really describe it. It’s an amazing feeling – and there is more come.”

Tottenham receive major Roony Bardghji update amid rumours of bargain deal - Spurs Web
Description

Amidst reports linking Swedish starlet Roony Bardghji with a move to Tottenham, Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed a big detail about the winger’s future at Copenhagen.

Spurs have had plenty of success when it comes to signing talented teenagers and helping them mature into top-class players.

They could now turn their attention to the young Copenhagen star, with the speculation linking the 19-year-old with a move to N17 gathering steam since he returned to action from his ACL injury back in March.

A number of outlets have reported over recent months that Tottenham may test the waters with an offer for Bardghji this summer.

A few days ago, it emerged that Bardghji had refused to sign a new contract at Copenhagen, and with his contract running out in January 2026, his days at the Danish club are numbered.

The outlet claimed that Tottenham Hotspur and the Sweden Under-21 international’s other suitors might have a chance to sign him for a cut-price fee this summer.

Fabrizio Romano has now taken to social media to confirm that Bardghji is not expected to put pen to paper on an extension at Copenhagen.

MORE SPURS STORIES

While the Italian transfer expert did not specifically mention Tottenham’s interest, he made it clear there is no shortage of clubs queuing up to sign the Sweden Under-21 international.

Spurs may have one advantage in the race for Bardghji

Earlier this week, it was revealed by GiveMeSport that Tottenham face competition from Aston Villa and Newcastle for Bardghji this summer.

The outlet claimed that both clubs had reached out to the winger’s representatives, and asserted that the player could be available for just £10m.

Heung-min Son breaks his silence on Ange Postecoglou’s sacking at Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs Web
Description

Ange Postecoglou has officially parted ways with Tottenham Hotspur and just like that, the Australian’s time as head coach is over.

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed Ange Postecoglou had been sacked in a statement on Friday, which came on his two-year anniversary of taking up the job.

Tottenham fans reacted to Postecoglou’s sacking with mixed views – while some felt the Premier League form was unforgivable, others believed that leading Tottenham to win the Europa League final against Manchester United meant he deserved to continue.

Club captain Heung-min Son has also now broken his silence on the dismissal of Postecoglou following on from other members of the Tottenham first-team squad on Friday.

Heung-min Son on Ange Postecoglou’s sacking by Tottenham

Son has taken to Instagram to send a message to his former boss in which he praised the 59-year-old.

The South Korean did not hold back with his tribute in which he claimed Postecoglou had changed the trajectory of the club following their Europa League success which ended a seventeen-year wait for a major trophy.

There was also a deeply personal element to Son’s tribute in which he claimed the Australian had improved him both on and off the pitch, while also thanking him for making him Tottenham captain following the departure of Harry Kane.

MORE SPURS STORIES

He wrote on Instagram: “Gaffer. You’ve changed the trajectory of this club. You believed in yourself, and us, since day one and never wavered for a second. Even when others did.

“You knew what we were capable of all along. You did it your way. And your way brought this club the best night it’s had in decades. We will have those memories for life.

“You trusted me with the captaincy. One of the highest honours of my career. It’s been an incredible privilege to learn from your leadership up close, I am a better player and a better person because of you.

“Ange Postecoglou, you are a Tottenham Hotspur legend forever. Thank you, mate.”

Were Tottenham right to sack Ange Postecoglou?

This is the very subject which appears to have decided the fanbase. Whether you are happy with the decision or not, one thing is for sure, it has completely derailed the momentum of the Europa League success.

While clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City are busy improving their squads – Tottenham are at a standstill while they look to appoint a replacement.
