Djed Spence has put pen to paper and signed a new long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur and the length of the agreement has now been disclosed.

Tottenham Hotspur have been working to bring new players to the club this summer, but keeping hold of their current stars is important too.

It is therefore positive news that Djed Spence has signed a new long-term contract with Tottenham. This comes after Spence already signed a Spurs contract until 2028 last October.

The 25-year-old has played every minute of Thomas Frank’s opening two competitive matches. The last time he spent an entire match on the bench was in May, when Tottenham defeated Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-finals. This highlights just how important he has become, despite previously being written off by some at the club.

According to Tom Barclay, Djed Spence has signed a new contract keeping him at Spurs until 2029. There is an option to extend his stay by another year, which means he could be contracted to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the next five seasons, including the current one.

Barclay has heaped praise on Spence, who has changed his fortunes at Tottenham. Only last summer, it was reported that Tottenham could be willing to sell Spence for as little as £6m. This shows just how impressive his ‘turnaround’ has been.

Barclay posted on X: “Good news for Djed Spence signing a new deal. Led to believe the terms take him until 2029 with an option of another year.

“Been quite the turnaround for him since just over a year ago, but now one of his targets should be to get in among reckoning for England. He has the talent.”

Is Spence good enough for England?

A key factor in Spence never having made his international debut is that he has not been a regular starter at Tottenham. However, with Destiny Udogie injured, this is his time to impress. There is no doubt that on his day, Spence is a brilliant full-back and is good enough to play for England.

After all, it is not as if the national team have a great deal of options in the left-back position. Neither Reece James, nor Myles Lewis-Skelley looked particularly impressive against Andorra and Senegal respectively when England played in June. In fact, those were two very lacklustre performances across the whole team.

England need someone who is willing to take a risk or two and who can drive forward with pace, as well as fulfilling their defensive duties.

Spence is that kind of player and while he does need to work on his consistency, Thomas Tuchel would certainly benefit from having him as an option in his squad.

He said: “Before anyone would ask me who the best player I played with was, I would always say Mousa Dembele. He made me have to think. He is just extraordinary; he does things that no one else can do.”

Dier then went on to describe the unique qualities that stood out when he first trained alongside Musiala, highlighting the artistry and freedom with which the player operates.

“He is an artist; the freedom that he plays with is incredible. That night I was just in awe of him, the courage to take the ball anywhere, the way he moves, the way he controls it.

“The way he glides past people surprised me. When I got there and saw him, he was bigger than I expected. He is skinny up top but has big legs, taller and stronger than you would think.”

Jamal Musiala is highly talented and technical, but so is Mousa Dembele, whose quality has long been recognised across the game, with countless players lauding the Belgian as one of the most difficult opponents they faced.

The argument could be made that Luka Vuskovic can play on the left side too, but Hamburg could sign Vuskovic on loan. If van de Ven gets injured, having to play Davies would not be ideal. As loyal as the Welshman has been to Spurs, he does not possess the qualities of a top Premier League player.

There is also the fact that Frank may sometimes opt to play a back three. This means another defensive signing would be of great importance and the Bundesliga winner is certainly a great option.

Now it is about whether Tottenham are willing to pay his release clause, but also if the player himself is willing to accept the move.

There is one obvious weakness in the Tottenham first-team squad. This became all the more clear against Burnley, as Brennan Johnson had to play out of position, as a left winger. Guillem Balague has claimed that City have decided Savinho is no longer for sale. This means Pep Guardiola’s men will not sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid, another player to have been linked with Tottenham this summer.
