Sheffield United are ready to make a multi-million-pound offer for a young Tottenham defender if Thomas Frank decides that the player is not part of his plans.

Ashley Phillips was considered to be one of the best young talents in the Championship when he made the move from Blackburn Rovers to Tottenham Hotspur two years ago.

However, the 19-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for the Lilywhites, and he did not have a particularly eye-catching campaign on loan at Stoke City last season, although he did get regular game time under his belt.

It was reported last week that Thomas Frank has asked Tottenham to reject loan offers for Phillips, with the Dane keen to take a closer look at the teenager during pre-season.

Over the last few weeks, several sources have claimed that Sheffield United have expressed an interest in signing Phillips on loan, but the Blades have been unable to do so following Frank’s communication with Spurs.

Journalist Alan Nixon has now revealed on his Patreon that Sheffield United are not giving up on the Spurs defender just yet.

He claims that the Championship side are not just interested in signing Phillips on loan but have signalled an intention to complete a permanent deal.

Kota Takai is expected to be Tottenham’s second signing of the Frank era, with the Lilywhites allegedly striking a £5m deal to sign the young centre-back from J League side Kawasaki Frontale.

Alasdair Gold claimed last week that the impending arrival of Takai means that Phillips and Alfie Dorrington are likely to be loaned out by Spurs this summer.

Tottenham’s Archie Gray has now won his second trophy in as many months, following up his Europa League winner’s medal with European Under-21 Championship final glory with England in Bratislava.

England and Germany squared off in the final at the Tehelne Pole Stadium and the young Lions raced into a 2-0 lead through goals from Harvey Elliott and Omari Hutchinson.

However, the Germans fought back to level the game at 2-2 through strikes from Nelson Weiper and Paul Nebel to send the game into extra-time. A header from Marseille’s Jonathan Rowe won it for Lee Carsley’s side in 120 minutes.

Gray, who was an unused substitute in the final, proudly stepped up to collect his medal just a month after winning the Europa League with Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.

Should Spurs be concerned about Gray’s lack of game time?

Many Spurs fans would have expected Gray to be a fixture in the England Under-21 side after his impressive first season at Tottenham, but the youngster only made three appearances in the tournament.

The 19-year-old’s only two starts came at right-back in England’s first two games of the competition against Czechia and Slovenia, with Newcastle’s Tino Livramento displacing him from the side subsequently.

Some Spurs are worried that Gray cannot even get into England’s Under-21 side, and the youngster certainly has a point to prove next season, but there is one factor that could work in his favour.

Thomas Frank is a fan of Archie Gray at Tottenham

The youngster, like many of the players at Hotspur Way, will be keen to make an impression on Frank and his coaching staff when he reports for pre-season.

However, Gray has one advantage; the Dane is already a fan of the Leeds academy graduate. Frank tried to take Gray to Brentford last summer before Tottenham came swooping for the youngster.

The teenager was close to joining the Bees from Leeds in a £40m move, but the transfer fell through as Daniel Farke’s side were unhappy with the structure of the deal, which allowed Spurs to hijack the youngster.

Martin Keown has revealed that one former Tottenham midfielder once left him in absolute disbelief when he came up against him 36 years ago.

Keown is considered one of the best English centre-backs over recent decades and he came up against some of the best players to have ever played the game during his career, including Ronaldo Nazario, Zinedine Zidane, and Rivaldo.

When the question was posted to Keown, it did not take long for him to recollect a goal that Chris Waddle scored against his Aston Villa side back in 1989 at White Hart Lane.

Waddle was already on the verge of becoming a superstar when he arrived at the Lane from Newcastle in 1985 and he went on to score 42 goals in 173 matches in all competitions for the Lilywhites across three seasons.

Keown admitted that he was in disbelief at the strike that the England international produced in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Villa in his final season in North London.

When asked to name a player who left him starstruck on the pitch, the Arsenal legend told talkSPORT: “Do you know what? It happened more than once! But one that sticks in my mind was playing against Chris Waddle for Spurs vs Villa.

“It was a midweek game and I went to press him on the edge of the box. And I got as tight as I could and he just hit it round me. And when I looked, it went over, he’s a left-footed player, it went over my left shoulder. And when I looked in the goal, it was in the right-hand side of the goal.

When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of the versatile attacker, O’Hara told talkSPORT: “I think he [Eze] would be a brilliant signing for us. I really do, I think it would be a top signing… Maddison’s a bit more of a number 10, he gets into little pockets.

What role has Thomas Frank envisioned for Eze?

It was reported a few days ago that Frank believes that Eze can complement Maddison in a dynamic attacking setup at Spurs.

That suggests that Frank sees the Palace star as primarily a wide option who can cut in from the left rather than as a number ten.

A new report from Racing de Alma has now claimed that the Argentine club are going all out for the young striker and have now made their first formal offer in recent hours.

According to this update, Racing’s offer is worth $5m (£4.2m) and Spurs will be entitled to receive 30% of profits from a future sale.

The outlet adds that the North London side has made it clear that they will only consider selling the youngster this summer if the deal sees them retaining a considerable sell-on clause on the player.

This may suggest that the decision-makers at Tottenham are convinced about Veliz’s talent and are a little reluctant to let him leave permanently despite his struggles out on loan at Espanyol and Sevilla, and thus want to secure some insurance.

Some might see this one as a hot take, but Sanchez never looked like the level of player Tottenham should have been starting. He received much praise in his first season, but the hype seemed to be excessive, for no reason other than the fact that he was a young defender.

Over the years, things got worse for the centre-half, as his performances worsened. Sanchez later admitted he struggled to cope with the criticism he faced at Tottenham, which included being booed off the pitch in one game.

The 29-year-old became Tottenham’s club record signing, but was sold for £12.8m. Does he, therefore, deserve to be on this list? We think so.

There was excitement around Hotspur Way when Tottenham beat Bayern Munich to the signing of Dragusin. However, the 23-year-old’s displays have been pretty shocking since he arrived. He made his full debut in a 3-0 defeat to Fulham and that scoreline alone is a decent summary of how life in North London has been for him.

One particular low point occurred last season when Ryan Gravenberch said Liverpool targeted Dragusin during a 6-3 win over Spurs in the Premier League. This was despite the fact that Dragusin’s centre-back partner was Archie Gray, who was an 18-year-old midfielder playing out of position.

Dragusin has struggled on the ball, often giving away possession in dangerous positions and his defending has not been great either. Ange Postecoglou’s style of play certainly did not help the Romanian, but he certainly has not lived up to the hype sounded by his outspoken agent.

What a shocking piece of business this was! Spurs parted ways with Lamela along with more than £20m, for a player who was not even as good as the Argentine winger.

Gil has failed to score in 24 Premier League appearances for Tottenham and he has been loaned back to La Liga three times.

He has never looked much of an attacking threat and he lacks the physicality required to make it in England. Spurs really need to get him sold this summer.

Janssen was signed by Tottenham after a season where he scored 27 goals in the Eredivisie. He certainly did not reach those heights in the Premier League.

He scores when he wants is the song Spurs supporters comedically sang about the Dutchman, who only managed six goals in 42 appearances, before leaving for a £6m fee.

Identifying good strikers was clearly an issue for the Tottenham scouts, as Roberto Soldado had been sold only one year before Janssen joined. It is difficult to pick which of the two was worse during their spells at the club.

Imagine being so lazy that Jose Mourinho breaks lockdown rules during a global pandemic to take you on a run. This was one of the bizarre stories of Ndombele’s time at Spurs.

He is probably the most frustrating Tottenham player of all time, because he was clearly a skilful and talented player. However, Ndombele had a bad attitude and put in as little effort as possible. It is crazy to think he caused Tottenham to once again break their club record transfer fee.

The midfielder was described as being like a better version of Mousa Dembele when he joined Spurs, possessing his abilities while offering more in attack. Some opinions age like fine wine, but this one aged like a pint of milk.

Some of the Tottenham Hotspur home kits Nike have produced have been total flops and the new Spurs 2025/26 design is their worst effort yet.

Tottenham Hotspur have had flashy, bizarre and just plain ugly away and third kit designs in the past few years. Some have been a hit with the supporters, while others have given them the ick.

The home shirts, on the other hand, are often just a bit boring. After all, there is only so much you can do with white and navy. However, people still have their opinions on them, and the most recent addition has failed to hit the mark.

Nike have made the decision to centralise the logos, like the bright yellow 2020/21 third kit and the 22/23 away. This just seems like a tired strategy to make the shirt more interesting. It features navy on the shoulders, which might have looked okay on its own. However, the added grey colour makes the strip look ugly. Other than that, it is just a plain white shirt.

The new home kit has failed to impress, but some historic Spurs shirts have been worse. Here is every jersey which is even more revolting:

Spurs 2009/10 white and yellow home kit

The first few home kits Puma made for Spurs are the most boring you will see. A plain white shirt with a few logos on it, coming up with the design concept must have taken about 10 minutes. The 08/09 got slightly more interesting with a thin strip of navy on the V-neck collar and lower sleeves.

One season later, Puma decided to start getting inventive and the result was a disaster. The 09/10 kit may bring to mind players like Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe, but going off the design alone, it is shocking!

There is more yellow on the shirt than navy and its placement is a little odd, particularly the thin, tilted lines at the top. The Mansion sponsor always looked ugly and it became even worse when additional text was added. Like AIA, it means red must feature on the kit, but at least the current sponsor does not look like an eyesore.

The overall kit looks better with the navy shorts, but it still earns the unwanted spot as Tottenham’s worst-ever home kit.

Tottenham home kit dishonourable mentions

Some past kits are not quite as bad as the latest offering, but they certainly came close. The first two Puma shirts were incredibly dull and the same could be said of the 04/05 Kappa kit, which once again was just a plain white shirt.

The 18/19 kit is another which could be deemed equally as bad as the current one, but for different reasons. The gradient fade from navy to white did not look great and when Spurs wore white shorts in Europe, the kit did not work at all.

One which is dividing opinions here at The Spurs Web is the 15/16 shirt. Personally, this is one of my favourite Tottenham kits. The balance between white and navy is perfect and Under Armour tried something out of the ordinary. However, some are unable to get past the fact the navy stripe looks like a seatbelt and would rank it among the worst ever.

Graeme Bailey has now confirmed that Mikel Arteta’s men have indeed made enquiries about the 26-year-old. He reveals that they are not the only ones to do so, with Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Newcastle and Aston Villa also exploring moves for the England international.

However, the journalist asserts that Tottenham are at the front of the queue to land Eberechi Eze at the moment.

While the speculation linking Eze with a move to Spurs has intensified substantially over the last week, several sources indicate that the Lilywhites are not putting all their eggs into the Palace man’s basket.

In fact, Ben Jacobs has gone as far as to say that Tottenham have ‘backed off’ their interest in Eze over the past 24 hours. If true, this will come as frustrating news to Spurs fans.

It has been alleged that Tottenham remain interested in Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and other attackers.

The Telegraph’s Matt Law has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs involved in the race to land Xavi Simons, but he suggested that there is one factor which could diminish the Lilywhites’ chances of winning the race for the RB Leipzig star.

Over the last few weeks, several outlets have backed Tottenham to push ahead with a big-money move for Simons, whose future at Leipzig is thought to be up in the air.
