Description

Tottenham Hotspur now shift their focus back to Europe, with a tricky Europa League quarter-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt on the horizon – and based on recent results, Ange Postecoglou can be quietly confident.

Tottenham Hotspur’s attention now turns to European matters once again, as they prepare for a crucial Europa League quarter-final clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The first leg will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but that might not be as much of an advantage as it seems.

That’s because Postecoglou’s scout shared a detail that could have consequences for Tottenham’s return leg in the Europa League – and potentially the tie as a whole.

The Aussie revealed that his scout reported how electric, and even deafening, Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park can get when they’re on song. It’s the kind of atmosphere that could swing a tight game.

If Spurs are serious about going all the way in this competition, they’ll need to prove themselves both home and away.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what sort of form the German side are bringing into this one.

Eintracht Frankfurt form guide ahead of Tottenham clash in the Europa League

Eintracht Frankfurt’s recent form has been a mixed bag going into Thursday night’s encounter against Spurs.

They’ve managed just two wins from their last five Bundesliga outings, though they still sit as high as 3rd in the table – a reflection of how inconsistent the chasing pack has been this season.

That run includes a heavy 4-1 home defeat to title-chasing Bayer Leverkusen, a 2-1 loss away to Union Berlin – who currently sit 14th, ironically the same league position as Spurs – and most recently, a 2-0 defeat on the road against Werder Bremen.

That result means they’ll arrive in north London off the back of a loss, hardly ideal preparation for such a high-stakes European tie.

Looking closely at their Bundesliga away form, Frankfurt haven’t exactly been convincing. They’ve played 14 games on the road this season, winning six and losing five.

It’s not the worst record, but it certainly shows they’re vulnerable away from home. That said, they’ve still got enough about them to spring a surprise at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially if Postecoglou’s side aren’t switched on.

Frankfurt’s European pedigree and the big Spurs opportunity

Historically, Spurs and Frankfurt haven’t met often – just twice in fact. Tottenham edged a 3-2 win during the 2022 Champions League group stage at home, after playing out a goalless draw in Germany.

The German side do have notable Europa League pedigree, having won the competition in the 2021/22 and 1979/80 seasons, and finishing runners-up back in 1959/60. It’s a track record that shows they’re no strangers to going deep in Europe.

Spurs, on the other hand, have won the Europa League twice in their history, once in 1972 and then later in 1984. Of course, they haven’t won in recent years, meaning the 2024/25 campaign presents a real chance to change that narrative.

However, a tough test like this quarter-final is exactly the kind of hurdle they’ll need to clear if they’re to create something memorable.

Description

Brennan Johnson had the chance to take home the match ball against Southampton—but instead handed over the spotlight to Mathys Tel. Now, the Tottenham winger has revealed why.

Ange Postecoglou would have been delighted with the way his team went about their business against lowly Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

There were a few positives for Tottenham in their clash against the Saints, with one of them being Brennan Johnson’s brace, which now sees the wide forward end his eight-match goalless run in all competitions.

Of course, Postecoglou would be pleased his winger is hitting form right before their two-legged tie against Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-finals first leg.

Brennan Johnson wanted to take Tottenham penalty

Brennan Johnson’s brace against Southampton took his Premier League goal tally into double figures, with the winger now sitting on 11 goals—more than any other Tottenham player.

He had the chance to make it 12 after winning a penalty in the dying moments, and had he taken it, he’d have sealed his hat-trick and padded his numbers even further.

But instead, he passed up the opportunity, allowing Bayern loanee Mathys Tel to take the spot kick, which the Frenchman dispatched coolly for his first Premier League goal in a Spurs shirt.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Johnson has now explained why he let Tel take the penalty. Speaking to the club’s official Twitter account, he said: “It’s only normal for me to want to take the penalty. There’s only a certain amount of talking to do before it gets quite messy.

“I’ve been in the situation before when I’ve had people wanting to take the ball off me and it kind of unsettles you a little bit.

“I knew the game was pretty much done but still, I didn’t want to unsettle anyone or start any disagreements. So, once the decision was made, I just had to get on with it.”

Cristian Romero made the penalty call as Spurs captain

It’s since come to light that vice-captain Cristian Romero was the one who made the penalty call on Sunday, handing the ball to Tel before embracing Johnson, who didn’t seem too fussed post-match.

As for what’s next, Postecoglou now faces another decision ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Frankfurt—whether to stick with Johnson on the right or bring back Wilson Odobert, who was instrumental against AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16 second leg.

With Johnson now leading the club’s goalscoring charts and Tel opening his account, regardless of who the manager opts for, Tottenham’s attacking options are in a decent place.

Description

During Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 win against Southampton on Sunday afternoon, Cristian Romero’s action during the penalty incident summed up what it means to be a proper captain in north London.

Every Tottenham fan following our coverage lately will be well aware of the growing uncertainty around Cristian Romero’s long-term future at the club.

Reports emerged weeks ago suggesting that Romero has yet to commit to a new Spurs contract, despite the club apparently putting a very attractive deal on the table.

Since then, Atletico Madrid have made a move of their own, reaching out to Romero’s representatives to sound out a potential switch.

The 26-year-old is said to be open to the idea of leaving north London, with the lure of Champions League football next season proving tempting.

Cristian Romero hands Tottenham penalty to Mathys Tel

Regardless of the noise surrounding Romero, against Southampton on Sunday, he started once more for Tottenham—despite many expecting him to be rested ahead of the upcoming Europa League tie.

The Argentine put in a strong showing too, posing a threat from set-pieces and forcing Aaron Ramsdale into a couple of decent saves, while also keeping things ticking over with his usual range of passing.

MORE SPURS STORIES

But one moment stood out above all. As relayed by George Sessions, late in the game, Spurs were awarded a penalty. Brennan Johnson had won it and was on a hat-trick.

But with Mathys Tel still searching for his first Premier League goal, Romero stepped up—literally—and made the decision.

He handed Tel the ball, offered Johnson a quick hug, and let the young Frenchman grab his debut league goal at home.

Cristian Romero needs to remain focused during Spurs’ crucial end-of-season run-in

With several of Spurs‘ senior players already off the pitch by then, Romero—as vice-captain—had to make a call, and most fans would probably agree it was the right one. Tel needed that confidence boost.

As for Romero, it was a moment that spoke volumes—not just about his leadership, but his mindset too. For all the noise around his future, he’s clearly still switched on and playing for the badge.

What matters now is that he keeps it that way. Tottenham need him locked in during this crucial run-in. Let the summer take care of itself.

On Sunday afternoon, Heung-min Son made history of his own, marking a personal milestone in the heart of Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 win over Southampton.

Ange Postecoglou and co will have been breathing a sigh of relief after Tottenham Hotspur finally brought an end to their four-game winless run, with a much-needed victory against lowly Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That result didn’t change Spurs’ league position as they remain 14th, but it did register the club’s 11th win of the campaign after 31 matches played, as the team look to steady what’s been a wobbly league run.

It was a performance sparked by youthful energy, with Brennan Johnson bagging a well-taken brace, while Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel opened his Premier League account for the club from the penalty spot.

Heung-min Son joins elite Tottenham club after Southampton win

Tel wasn’t the only one with cause for celebration on Sunday. Club captain Heung-min Son also made headlines, as he joined an elite group of Tottenham Hotspur legends during the win over Southampton.

Having started the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Son clocked his 450th appearance for Spurs, becoming only the seventh player in the club’s history to reach that figure — a feat confirmed by the official Tottenham website.

The South Korean now finds himself among Spurs royalty, rubbing shoulders with the likes of record holder Steve Perryman (854), Gary Mabbutt (611), Pat Jennings (590), Cyril Knowles (506), Glenn Hoddle (490) and Ted Ditchburn (452).

Why Son’s Spurs legacy keeps growing and growing

Since arriving in north London, Son’s journey has been nothing short of iconic — a Champions League finalist in 2019, a FIFA Puskas Award winner in 2020 and the Premier League Golden Boot holder in 2022.

More recently, Son picked up his record eighth KFA Player of the Year award, a landmark that no other Asian footballer has matched.

Now, wearing the captain’s armband, Son will have his eyes set on the one thing missing from his Spurs CV — silverware.

Should he be the one to lead the club to the end of its 17-year trophy drought, his status as a true Tottenham legend will be absolutely undisputed.

It has been reported that Tottenham Hotspur have not given up on Joao Gomes despite the midfielder penning a new contract at Wolves, but the Lilywhites have their work cut out to agree on a deal for the Brazilian.

Gomes has emerged as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League since swapping Brazilian football for Wolves back in 2023.

The 24-year-old’s consistent performances in the Midlands this season have unsurprisingly brought him to the attention of a lot of big hitters, including Tottenham Hotspur.

It was reported last month that Tottenham are plotting a move for Gomes but the Lilywhites received some bad news regarding the player recently.

Wolves confirmed last week that Gomes had signed a new five-year contract at the club, which seemed to put an end to Spurs’ pursuit of the player, but a new report suggests otherwise.

Tottenham still interested in Joao Gomes but there is one problem

TBR Football have now claimed that the midfielder’s contract extension has not put off Tottenham, who still remain ‘keen’ on landing the player.

However, Spurs are not Gomes’ only admirers, with Aston Villa and Liverpool also determined to secure the Brazil international’s services.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The outlet says that all three clubs face a ‘tough battle’ to prise the player away from Molineux Stadium this summer.

Wolves now hold all the power after the midfielder’s contract extension and it would take a ‘substantial’ offer to convince Vítor Pereira’s men to cash in on their star man.

The Midlands club are of the opinion that Gomes is up there with the best midfielders in Europe and expect top dollar for their priced asset.

Spurs also eyeing a move for another Wolves star

Gomes is not the only Wolves man on Tottenham’s radar, with the North Londoners also allegedly plotting a move for the midfielder’s compatriot.

It has been widely reported that Matheus Cunha is on the top of Spurs’ wishlist this summer as they attempt to add more firepower to their frontline.

Description

Tottenham made light work of a struggling Southampton side, but as ever with this Ange Postecoglou team, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Here are two positives and two negatives from the Tottenham vs Southampton game.

The whistle has gone at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Spurs welcomed relegation-bound Southampton.

Ange Postecoglou’s side came out on top, picking up their 11th win of the league season after 31 matches played.

It was an inspired showing from Brennan Johnson, who led the charge in a 3-1 win over the Saints — a result that officially seals Southampton’s fate, confirming their drop after managing just two wins all campaign.

Let’s now get into two positives and two negatives from Spurs’ outing against Southampton.

Brennan Johnson stars as Tottenham see off Southampton

Brennan Johnson’s performance on Sunday afternoon will no doubt go down as a major positive for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham.

The Welsh winger grabbed a brace before winning a penalty in the dying moments—though he generously let Mathys Tel step up and convert it for his first Premier League goal in a Spurs shirt.

MORE SPURS STORIES

That brace now takes Johnson’s tally to 50 goals in English football. More importantly, it gives Spurs one more attacker hitting form right when it matters most, especially ahead of their crucial European tie against Frankfurt.

Johnson, who’s now the club’s leading scorer in the league, has found his scoring boots again after a barren run.

Djed Spence maintains fine form in crucial end of season run-in

Right behind Johnson in the man-of-the-match stakes was Djed Spence, who once again looked sharp down the right.

A few weeks ago, Spence talked about wanting to win trophies with Tottenham, and today’s display backed up that ambition.

He was a constant outlet, and his assist for Johnson’s opener was the sort of moment that boosts confidence going into Thursday’s quarter-final first leg.

Defensive lapses cost Tottenham Hotspur another clean sheet

There’s been a lot of chat around whether Spurs‘ playing style leaves them vulnerable, especially when they’re ahead—and that talk won’t be going away anytime soon.

Against Southampton, Tottenham looked to switch things up slightly. They played with a bit more caution, trying to control the tempo and limit the Saints’ chances by holding onto the ball.

But it didn’t really work. Southampton still managed to snatch a late goal, and had there been more time left on the clock, things might’ve turned very nervy.

That late lapse is something Postecoglou and his staff will want to sort quickly, particularly with Frankfurt coming up next. You can’t afford those kinds of moments in knockout football.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke still searching for goals

It was another frustrating afternoon for Dominic Solanke, who just couldn’t get himself going in front of goal.

Postecoglou would’ve been hoping the striker could get one today and finally break his drought—he’s now gone nine games without a goal.

In truth, Solanke looked off the pace in that first half. Spurs didn’t create much for him, and when he did get a sniff, it was from outside the box, which made it that much harder to make an impact.

It’s a concern now. Tottenham will need all their attackers firing if they want to progress in Europe and finish the season strong domestically, and Solanke’s current form isn’t cutting it.

Match Report: Tottenham 3-1 Southampton: Brennan Johnson back to his best - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur put an end to their two-match goal drought, relegating Southampton 3-1, thanks to a first-half brace from Brennan Johnson and a late penalty goal by Mathys Tel.

Well, despite the Premier League no longer being of much interest to Spurs fans this season, this game was all about building momentum and restoring a bit of confidence ahead of the Europa League quarter-final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt later this week.

Facing a Southampton side who had been flirting with relegation for what felt like an eternity, Spurs were expected to dominate. And for the first half, that’s exactly what happened. It was calm, controlled, and clinical. The second half? Not quite the same, but the Lilywhites got the job done.

Ange Postecoglou surprisingly made only three changes to the side that started against Chelsea, with Ben Davies, Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson coming in for Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and WOdobert. The main talking point, however, was Mathys Tel being benched again – only Ange knows why. Spurs fans, however, weren’t too pleased.

First half: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Southampton

From the first whistle, Spurs were on the front foot and pinned Southampton deep inside their own half. For the opening ten minutes, the visitors barely touched the ball, let alone crossed halfway.

Cristian Romero nearly broke the deadlock with a thunderous header from a corner. But Aaron Ramsdale managed to keep it out.

Lucas Bergvall also came very close, but the ball got stuck under his feet and the shot lacked the power to trouble Ramsdale.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Eventually, the breakthrough came in the 13th minute. Djed Spence bombed forward, overlapping Son Heung-min before cutting the ball back perfectly for Brennan Johnson, who coolly finished the move. A well-worked goal and a deserved lead.

Romero nearly got his goal again shortly after from a free-kick delivery. However, Ramsdale was once again, alert to the danger.

Just past the half-hour mark, Spurs thought they had doubled their lead. Porro whipped in a superb free-kick, Romero headed it back across goal and Bergvall tapped it in. But after a painfully long VAR check, the goal was ruled out after Romero was deemed offside.

But there was no denying Johnson his brace. With three minutes left in the half, a slick move saw a looping cross brought down by Maddison, and the Welshman was on hand to delicately put it past Ramsdale with the outside of his boot. 2-0.

Spence, then once again, went on a surging run down the left, but instead of squaring for Son, he went for glory. Ramsdale made the save, but it could’ve easily been three.

At the break, it felt inevitable. Southampton had managed just one shot on target, 0.62 xG to Spurs’ 1.22, and had been pressed into submission. A third relegation for the Saints loomed large.

Second half: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Southampton

Credit where it’s due. Southampton came out fighting after the interval, perhaps spurred on by the realisation they were 45 minutes away from the drop.

The Saints pressed higher, passed quicker, and began to win duels in midfield. Sulemana, in particular, troubled both Johnson and Porro down the right flank. Fortunately, Romero and Bentancur intercepted his cutbacks on time.

Maddison played a beautiful long ball to release Son down the left, but the South Korean’s effort lacked conviction and was blocked by Jan Bednarek.

Southampton’s best chances fell to Solanke, who had a night to forget. Time and again he chose the wrong option – shooting from impossible angles instead of squaring it and when he did shoot, his efforts were either blocked, saved, or way off target. He still managed to give the Southampton’s defence a busy time.

Just as the Saints’ intensity dipped, they suddenly struck. In the 90th minute, Sulemana clipped the ball ball to the back post where Mateus Fernandes chested it down and smashed it through Vicario’s legs. 2-1 and Spurs had invited pressure they didn’t need.

The pressure was now on Spurs suddenly. Brennan Johnson was in again and looked certain to complete his hat-trick until he was brought down inside the box. Penalty to Spurs.

Johnson wanted it. He earned it. He asked for it, quite clearly signalling ‘three’ with his fingers. But Mathys Tel took the ball and wouldn’t give it back. The fan in me was fuming – Johnson deserved that moment.

Still, Tel stepped up, stuttered, and restored the two-goal cushion. A goal’s a goal, and perhaps the confidence boost for Tel will serve Spurs well in Europe.

What’s next for Spurs?

So there we have it — three goals, three points, and Southampton officially relegated. The 3-1 win lifts Spurs up to 14th, with a chance to climb to 13th if Manchester United fall short against Manchester City.

This wasn’t a win to shout about from the rooftops though. Beating the worst side in the league doesn’t signal a revolution, but it was a much-needed result after back-to-back blanks.

More importantly, there were no fresh injury concerns. All eyes now turn to the Europa League quarterfinals against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Southampton - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur finally got back to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend with a 3-1 win over Southampton – a result that relegated the Saints back down to the Championship.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from Tottenham 3-1 Southampton.

Three points but a missed opportunity for Tottenham

It was extremely important for Tottenham Hotspur to get three points on the board on Sunday, not only to climb out of 16th in the Premier League table, but also to go into the Europa League quarter-final with some momentum. After Spurs went 2-0 up at half-time, it felt like there was a real opportunity to grab four or five, heading into the Eintracht Frankfurt clash on a high. However, what followed the half-time break was nothing short of dismal and dull for Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou opted to make no substitutions, and the players on the pitch opted to sit deep, jog around, and refuse to run for each other on the attack. Yes, they were likely just managing the game and saving energy for Thursday night, but Southampton were there for the taking. It has happened far too often this season that Spurs take their eye off the ball and let lesser teams back into the game. Whatever the situation, that is a bad habit to get into.

Brennan Johnson creates an interesting right-wing debate

For the most part, Tottenham know their strongest possible XI – even if the standard has been low this season. However, with Dejan Kulusevski out injured, the debate between Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert is an interesting one.

The Welshman does far less on the ball and often ghosts in and out of important games, but he is a numbers man. You might not see him for 90 minutes, but he consistently makes those expertly-timed runs into the box for tap-ins created by the left side. What he lacks in creativity and direct attacking with the ball at his feet, he makes up for with goal-scoring timing.

Odobert, on the other hand, is far more willing to take a defender on one-vs-one. The young Frenchman is fearless with the ball at his feet, but is still a very raw talent – far from the finished article. While he is capable of delivering superb performances, he is also prone to inconsistency at times. It is going to be very interesting to see what Postecoglou opts for against Frankfurt on Thursday.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Mathys Tel is struggling to earn his Tottenham chances

He may have come off the bench to score from the spot today, but Mathys Tel is struggling for chances in North London. You would think that a fixture at home to the worst side in the Premier League just days before the biggest game of the season would be a prime opportunity to rotate and hand Tel a start. However, Postecoglou stuck with Heung-min Son on the left and Dominic Solanke down the middle.

Once again, Tel was only handed a short cameo at the end of the game, coming on in the 87th minute. The only reason he got the penalty in the first place was because Son, Solanke, and Maddison were all off the pitch already. Let us remind you that Spurs paid £8.7m to take Tel on loan and have an option to buy for another £50m. There is no guarantee that Postecoglou will even still be in the job come the summer, so Mathys’ situation really is up in the air.

How can he prove that he’s worth the price tag without a decent chunk of minutes on the pitch?

Micky Van de Ven rested for the big night

One player Postecoglou did decide to rotate out was Micky Van de Ven, who was an unused substitute for Tottenham vs Southampton. With the Dutchman prone to hamstring injuries, and two pivotal fixtures against Eintracht Frankfurt to come, Spurs are clearly keeping him fit for Europe above all else.

I am just surprised that the likes of Djed Spence, Heung-min Son, and Dominic Solanke weren’t given the same treatment today. I would expect to see a heavily-rotated XI against Wolves between the two Europa League fixtures. In fact, fans will be annoyed if Postecoglou doesn’t do that.

Tottenham fan protests are going nowhere

Despite a 3-1 win in the North London sun, Tottenham fans have shown that the protests against Daniel Levy and ENIC show no signs of stopping. Once again, thousands of Spurs fans marched together to protest against the owners before kick-off this afternoon.

The message is clear, supporters want Levy out and new owners in. Even after the second goal went in for Tottenham, fans were quick to use the opportunity to chant ‘we want Levy out’ above all else. Say what you want about Levy, he will not be able to run or hide from the protests this time. They are not going to fizzle out and something has to change.

Description

Thousands of Spurs fans marched outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of their Premier League clash against Southampton, once again directing fury towards Daniel Levy and ENIC in a passionate protest demanding change.

A Tottenham fan protest against the club’s ownership is nothing new, and this season has seen that resistance grow louder.

The fanbase had already staged two separate protests prior to the Southampton game on Sunday afternoon, with one of the protests coming before their second league meeting with Manchester United – a coordinated mix of a sit-in and a walk-in protest.

Earlier in the campaign, Spurs fans also gathered for a protest ahead of the Liverpool fixture, which ended in a humiliating 6-3 defeat.

With tensions running high off the pitch, it’s clear the disconnect between supporters and ownership remains a persistent theme.

Tottenham fans protest against Daniel Levy and ENIC before Southampton win

Ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Southampton – a side battling for survival at the bottom of the table – Tottenham Hotspur supporters once again turned out in huge numbers to voice their anger at chairman Daniel Levy and the ENIC regime.

The message couldn’t have been more direct: fans held banners and chanted for the 63-year-old to “get out of our club”.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Levy’s time at the helm has been defined more by managerial turnover than silverware, with Spurs still without a trophy since winning the League Cup back in 2008.

It was a protest rooted in long-standing frustrations, not just results on the pitch. For many fans, Levy represents a leadership model that has prioritised profit margins over on-field ambition.

Tottenham fans also carried the protest into the stadium with chants of ‘we want Levy out’ ringing around the ground after the second goal went in. Win or lose, the Lilywhite faithful want to see the back of their chairman.

Spurs fans’ protest shows frustrations go deeper than results

Even though Spurs still have a chance of ending their trophy drought this season – with a Europa League quarter-final against Frankfurt coming up – these protests aren’t likely to stop, no matter how the campaign ends.

Plenty of fans are fed up with what they see as Levy’s continued lack of ambition. The Spurs chairman’s comments after the club’s recent financial report, where he insisted Tottenham wouldn’t “put themselves at financial risk” this summer, only added fuel to the fire.

Supporters are growing tired of hearing the same rhetoric, especially when the club’s wage bill continues to drop – a glaring contrast when compared to the rest of the so-called ‘big six’.

For many, it’s another reminder that Spurs are operating like a business first, and a football club second.

One thing is for certain, this is unlikely to be the last Tottenham protest of 2025.

Description

The half-time whistle has sounded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, signalling the end of the opening forty-five minutes in tonight’s bottom-half of the table clash between Tottenham and Southampton with the home side leading 2-0 and it’s now time for our first-half player ratings.

Everything appears to be unravelling for Ange Postecoglou, who now finds himself under pressure to retain his position in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout as he navigates a difficult second season in charge.

While many would argue that the Europa League has become the primary focus for Spurs, given their dismal domestic form which sees them languishing in 14th place, a victory against the Saints remains essential.

The Lilywhites must build some momentum ahead of their crucial first-leg encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League later this week.

Throughout the first half, we analysed each player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s take a look at our Tottenham player ratings…

Tottenham’s first-half player ratings vs Southampton

Guglielmo Vicario – A relatively quiet half for the Italian goalkeeper, who had little to contend with but produced a sharp save in the early moments to keep the Saints at bay. 7.

Djed Spence – A lively and effective performance from Spence, who was shifted to the right flank after a subdued spell at left-back against Chelsea. Provided the assist for the opening goal with a clever cut-back following an overlapping run. 8.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Cristian Romero – Much improved from the last outing in West London, Romero has been composed in possession and instrumental in Spurs’ build-up play. It was his incisive pass to Maddison that set the first goal in motion. Also a threat from set pieces, drawing two strong saves from Ramsdale, and played a key role in the disallowed second goal with a well-timed knockdown. 7.

Ben Davies – With Spurs rarely troubled defensively, Davies has had a quiet half — which, in truth, is no bad thing. Did what was required without fuss. 6

Pedro Porro – Not his most attacking display, as he refrained from making his usual surging runs down the left, but made a crucial early block to prevent Southampton from taking the lead. 7.5

Lucas Bergvall – A typically tidy and intelligent performance from the young Swede, who continues to impress with his composure and awareness in midfield. Thought he had scored his first Premier League goal with an instinctive finish, only for it to be ruled out. 8.

Rodrigo Bentancur – A quiet display from the Uruguayan, who hasn’t been overly involved but has contributed to Spurs’ midfield control and rhythm. 7.

James Maddison – Looked to find space and unlock the Saints’ defence. Played a key pass to Son in the build-up to the goal, and he also got the assist for the second goal. However, there’s a sense he still has another gear to find. 8.

Brennan Johnson – A clinical finish from Johnson, who latched onto Spence’s cut-back to score the first of two goals in the first half, before adding to his tally after managing to stay onside from Maddison’s searching header into the box. His brace marks his 50th goal in English football. A typically sharp and instinctive display in the final third. 9.

Dominic Solanke – Still searching for a goal to end his eight-match drought, but has found chances hard to come by in this one. Needs better service and movement around him. 5
