We asked our reporters to name the Tottenham line-up they reckon Thomas Frank will go for to face Arsenal in the first North London Derby of the season

The first North London Derby of the Premier League season is almost upon us and Thomas Frank has the rarity of a rapidly emptying treatment room at Tottenham.

Spurs looked set to go into the game at the Emirates Stadium with 12 players unavailable only for Frank to reveal on Friday that eight of them were now in training. That list includes attackers Mohammed Kudus and Randal Kolo Muani, complete with a face mask to protect his fractured jaw, midfielders Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray as well as defenders Ben Davies, Kota Takai and Radu Dragusin, who played 45 minutes in an under-21s friendly last week against Leyton Orient.

That means Frank has plenty of options to stock his team and bench now to face Mikel Arteta's Arsenal team at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Here are the views from two of our reporters on who Frank should select.

Alasdair Gold - Tottenham correspondent

On the whole Spurs benefited from an international break in which most of Frank's players either played just the one match for their country or in some cases neither. That means the Dane should have a reasonably fresh squad for the first of a series of big matches that come in quick succession.

The main choice at the back comes at left-back between Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie with both having done well against Bukayo Saka in recent seasons. In central midfield, Sarr, Bergvall and Gray may not be fit enough to start and the choice lies in whether Xavi Simons does alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha or plays on the left.

That leaves decisions to be made up front and on the wings. Will Kudus be fit enough to start, will Richarlison or the masked Kolo Muani get the nod up front or even the in-form Mathys Tel and will Brennan Johnson, Xavi or Wilson Odobert start on the left?

Johnson will be confident after his stunning goal for Wales in midweek while Kudus starred for Spurs before his injury and Frank could be keen to get both the Ghana international and Xavi, who scored for the Netherlands this week, in the same team in order to create chances and provide quality set pieces.

Gold's XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Palhinha, Xavi; Kudus, Richarlison, Johnson.

Ryan Taylor - Sports Reporter

Predicting the Tottenham XI Frank is going to field is never easy - let alone in a North London Derby.

There were plenty of positives in the way Spurs fought back against Manchester United and you have to wonder whether that late show will impact Frank's thinking.

A number of Tottenham players are also riding highs from the international break also, not least Xavi Simons and Brennan Johnson, who both netted for the respective nations earlier this week.

Three of the back-four picks itself but if fit, though I would give Destiny Udogie the nod over Djed Spence at left-back.

In midfield, the athleticism of Pape Matar Sarr could well compliment the industry and physicality of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur. Johnson's speed gives Spurs and outlet while Xavi could be shifted to the left. Kolo Muani has done well in recent weeks and should keep his spot despite Richarlison's goal against United.

Tottenham are deep in preparation for an all-important north London derby as they travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon

Tottenham are preparing for the north London derby this weekend as they head to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Thomas Frank's squad face a challenging run of fixtures, with clashes against the Gunners, Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham all looming.

Spurs want to maintain their unbeaten away record with a trip to the Emirates Stadium. However, having failed to secure a victory in the last six north London derbies, the Lilywhites have a considerable challenge ahead.

Injury woes continue to hamper Frank's team, with Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison still sidelined for an extended period. However, Mohammed Kudus is making a comeback, and Randal Kolo Muani has even been seen training with a protective mask for his jaw injury, making him a potential contender for Sunday's match.

Here, Football London provides all the latest updates from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of this weekend's crucial fixture.

£65million transfer target identified

Tottenham are among several clubs showing interest in Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. The Athletic reports that Spurs were monitoring the Ghana international during the summer and plan to intensify their interest in the next transfer window.

Semenyo's release clause is reportedly £65m and can be triggered in January. Other Premier League clubs showing interest include Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Bournemouth striker's international team-mate, Kudus, who joined Spurs in the summer, could play a pivotal role in persuading him to make the switch. The 25-year-old has been on fire this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 11 Premier League appearances so far.

Mega brand announces partnership

Tottenham have unveiled Elithair as their official hair treatment partner. The world's largest hair transplant clinic announced its partnership with the Lilywhites on Friday, and its branding will be prominently displayed throughout the club's stadium during home matches.

Spurs' Chief Revenue Officer, Ryan Norys, expressed his pride in the partnership. He said: "We are proud to partner with Elithair, a brand that has demonstrated undisputed global leadership in its field.

"As the world's largest hair transplant clinic, we could not have chosen a better partner than Elithair to engage our fanbase through a mission to inspire self-confidence and offer globally recognised clinical treatment practices."

Elithair co-founder, Dr Abdulaziz Balwi, echoed these sentiments as he said: "Partnering with an iconic Premier League club like Tottenham Hotspur is a monumental step for Elithair.

"It demonstrates the trust and authority we have built through our world-class expertise and international facilities in Istanbul, the United Kingdom, Germany and Dubai. This collaboration allows us to bring the same level of commitment and excellence seen at a Premier League level to every patient in the UK."

Description

The Tottenham Hotspur boss has been speaking about the owners' ambitions to push the north London club forward in the coming years

Thomas Frank is confident that Tottenham's owners, the Lewis family, are set to back him and the hierarchy with investment to build a successful club, although he still believes a £100million transfer remains beyond Spurs in the near future.

The Lewis family, namely siblings Vivienne and Charles Lewis and the former's son-in-law Nick Beucher, have stepped to the forefront this year to back the Premier League club and CEO Vinai Venkatesham going forward, following the exit of chairman Daniel Levy after 24 years at the helm.

The Lewis family have since injected £100million into the club and are expected to provide further financial support to help Spurs close the gap to the big-spending clubs above them.

On Sunday, Tottenham travel to their local rivals Arsenal, who currently sit on top of the table, four points clear of Manchester City and eight clear of Frank's fifth-placed side. The Gunners will feature some expensively assembled individuals bought over recent years, not least the £100million man Declan Rice. While Frank does not believe Spurs are close to splashing £100million on one player themselves, he does expect the Lewis family to push the club on.

"They definitely said they are all in for the club, that they want to be here for the long term and they want to have success," said the 52-year-old. "We’ll see what happens in the future, but I’m confident they will back us to do everything we can to build a successful club.

"I’m very good at talking up here, but it’s about showing it out there on the pitch consistently after setbacks. The same with them. In the best positive way, that’s what we need to do together."

Frank's predecessor Ange Postecoglou once said that Tottenham would never sign a £100million player but the current head coach believes they will one day, if not in the near future.

"In the next 50 years? Then yes! It’s very evident that every successful club, not for one year, but over five, six, seven years, to build, you need a combination of time and doing the processes, depending on where the team come from, of course, but to stay up there is still very difficult," said Frank.

"So time and process, and, then of course, investment. If you want success in football, you need to invest in players. Hopefully, do it cleverly and we want to do it smart, so we don’t invest too much on the wrong players. But you need to invest. £100m, I don’t know. Let’s see. I don’t think we are close to spending £100m, put it that way. But I don’t know, let’s see what happens in the future."

He added: "I’m a big believer that we need to develop the players we have, and if we do that, it’s about if you can develop players, not all of them should cost £60m, £70m, £80m, £90m, whatever the amount. I don't think anybody has done that. Liverpool didn't do that to get to the top. Even City hasn't done that.

"So you need to be good at developing the players, which I believe we are and we will be very good at. But then you also need to invest in the right potential of a player. He could be 22, or 26. Declan Rice is a good example. How old was he when he joined Arsenal? 24 or 25? That’s important. Nobody achieves the top without investing."

Ahead of Sunday's game, Frank joked that Arsenal stars David Raya and Christian Norgaard are now "traitors". The game will bring a reunion with two of his long-serving ex-Brentford stars. Raya was the Dane's goalkeeper for five years and Norgaard worked with Frank from his early years in the Danish international youth set-up and would go on to become his trusted captain at the Bees.

Frank's first Premier League game as a manager came with a 2-0 home win against Arsenal in 2021 with Raya and Norgaard both involved, but the duo will now line up against him on Sunday.

"Two of them are now traitors and moved to the wrong club!" said the Dane with a grin.

Although Arteta remains in charge at Arsenal, plenty has changed in the intervening years on both sides of the north London divide and Frank believes the same can be said about both managers coming into the game.

"Arteta is a good manager. He’s one of the managers who respect all the phases of the game," said the Tottenham head coach. "That was a special game [in 2021]. It was our first game in the Premier League. It was a day I’ll never forget.

"I definitely learned a lot in the last four years about the different teams, about myself. [It’s about] adding layers with the team, with myself, to communication, leadership, small tactical tweaks. I have clear principles but am constantly developing and tweaking them."

Frank will go into Sunday's match with the huge boost of having eight of Spurs' 12 unavailable players back in contention, including Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Bergvall and Randal Kolo Muani, who will play in a face mask after suffering a fractured jaw in the draw against Manchester United before the international break.

The Lilywhites boss also said that he is "pretty sure" Dominic Solanke will not require further surgery on his ankle and is comfortable that the striker will be back soon after four months out with a problem that has dogged him since the summer.

"We are very aware of how we do things, when do we really push and when do we not push. Now we are in a place where we think he will go forward and we'll take it from there," said the Spurs boss.

Sunday's match will showcase a battle of two teams who are strong at set pieces, Arsenal at scoring from them and Spurs in keeping them out. This season has brought a heavy focus across the league on set pieces and long throws with some suggesting that Frank's move to north London has been a factor in that.

"Oh, I don’t know. I’ve seen Arteta has been quoted saying he’s always been interested in it for a long time," he said. "So that I don’t know. But I’m pretty sure the bits I’ve done at Brentford have inspired a lot of clubs to focus more on set-pieces.

"And it is quite interesting that this year I go from Brentford to Tottenham, the spike in focus on set-pieces for all the teams, especially the long throws, is crazy.

"It seems like everyone is very, very focused on them, which we should be. They're a third of our goals. So why not be very good in that phase, and very good in high pressure. We need to be good in many phases."

The battle of the set pieces will see two of Frank's former Brentford staff going head to head in Spurs' Andreas Georgson and Arsenal's Nicolas Jover as the restart experts at both north London clubs.

"Both of them are very curious, both want to learn and develop constantly by studying the game of set-pieces so in that way they have quite the same mindset in many ways, trying to find the way how you can develop set-pieces to hurt the opponent from corners and wide free-kicks," said the Spurs boss.

"So in that they are quite similar; one is Swedish the other French so a little bit different temper. Mikel and I with our coaching staffs will have a battle - how can we get the upper hand and it will be the same with Nicolas and Andreas."

Thomas Frank has provided an update on how Tottenham are looking in the treatment room going into Sunday's North London Derby against Arsenal

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has confirmed EIGHT injury boosts ahead of their trip to Arsenal in the North London Derby on Sunday.

Pape Matar Sarr picked up a knock while playing for Senegal during the international break, but trained on Friday and is fit to face the Gunners. Lucas Bergvall missed two matches before the two-week hiatus due to concussion, but he is back available. Randal Kolo Muani suffered a jaw fracture during Tottenham's 2-2 draw against Manchester United, though he is free to play with a mask.

Mohammed Kudus did not feature in the clash against United or either of Ghana's two matches this month as a result of a knock, but he trained on Friday and there is optimism that he will be fit to face the Gunners.

Radu Dragusin, meanwhile, injured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament earlier this year and made his return in a behind-closed-doors friendly last Wednesday. He is "very close" to being back in the first-team squad, though Sunday's trip to Arsenal is expected to come too soon.

Ben Davies suffered a thigh issue while playing for Wales in October and hasn't featured since, though he trained on Friday with the rest of his Tottenham teammates. The same can be said for Kota Takai, who hasn't yet made his debut for Spurs after joining from Kawasaki Frontale in July.

Archie Gray has been dealing with a calf strain but he trained with the team on Friday and could be poised to return to the squad for the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Delivering an update on side's injury situation, Frank said in his pre-match press conference: "They are good. Most of them. Pape trained today and is ready and available, Lucas also trained today and is available.

"Kolo Muani, trained today, available with a mask of course.

"Dom is not ready yet. I think he also had an article recently about where he said the same, that we want to be sure that he's ready. I'm confident it will be soon."

Frank added: "Yeah, Radu very happy and he is a couple of weeks full training all in, everything and played first 45 minutes in nine months last Wednesday.

"Trained fully today, now he is getting very close to be selected and now it is a matter of performance and a few more game minutes to be fully available.

"Ben and Kota both trained today. Archie trained with the team as well."

As mentioned, Dominic Solanke, who hasn't featured since the 2-0 win at Manchester City in August, isn't available yet, though there is an expectation he will return to action soon.

Tottenham sit fifth in the Premier League table heading into this weekend's short trip across north London, with Frank's side eight points behind leaders Arsenal after 11 matches.

Every word Mikel Arteta said on Arsenal vs Spurs, Gabriel injury, returning stars and title race - Football London

Mikel Arteta spoke to the media ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium

Mikel Arteta faced questions from the media ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Tottenham in the Premier League. Arsenal lead the Premier League table and hope to extend their advantage following the international week.

The Spaniard provided some clarity on Gabriel Magalhaes, who suffered a considerable injury while on duty with Brazil. There was also news on Noni Madueke, Martin Odegaard, Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus and their potential returns.

On the derby itself, Arteta was keen to discuss the extra emotion and commitment needed for a match like this.

Here is every word said by the Arsenal manager:

Could we just start off with any clarity you can give us on Gabriel and how serious that injury is?

Yeah, Gabriel unfortunately picked up an injury with the Brazilian national team and he's going to be out for weeks.

Can you give us any more clarity?

No, we need to have another scan. I think it's next Wednesday, and we'll have the timeline probably much clearer than we have at the moment.

It's clearly a blow but have you ever felt more comfortable about the players that you can actually bring in and the options that you have when you have injuries like this?

Yes, it's clearly a blow because it's our leader in our backline and to me it's obviously never a positive thing. The good thing, as you mentioned, is that we have very good options, and people have to stand up now and do their job.

Riccardo Calafiori missed the Italy games, is he okay?

Yeah, he missed it, he wasn't available, he's been carrying a few things, and we have to bring him back, and he hasn't trained yet, so tomorrow we have another training session and see how he is.

What chance the other injuries that you've had in Gyokeres, Martinelli and the other longer term ones in Jesus, Havertz, Madueke and Odegaard?

Yeah, we put a lot of energy during the international break with all the medical staff as well to try to bring them as quick as possible. So tomorrow we have another training session, see how some of them are feeling, whether it's a bit too close to bring them in this game or we feel that they can have a contribution in the game. So tomorrow we'll have more clarity.

So there is a possibility some of them could be in the squad?

Yeah, well, I'm hopeful that we can make another step tomorrow, but certainly I cannot tell you.

And you can tell us the names of those?

No. I can! But, no.

I know you've spoken about the North London derby before but you've managed the North as ferocious derbies in world football. What makes this one so unique, so special for you?

It is different. I mean it's a big city but it's a big rivalry, it's a part of London that we want to conquer, they want to do the same. There's been a lot of shifts as well over the years, as well. We've been more dominant, and it's just beautiful, especially when we play at home in front of our people. We know what it means to them, the energy that they're going to bring, the energy that the team is going to bring in every single action, and it's just a privilege to play those kinds of games, so we cannot wait to get to Sunday.

You mentioned the fans and obviously it means so much to them, to both ends of the fans but how big of a challenge is it to separate what their needs are and trying to focus on what is just a game that you want to win and you must win to get three points?

It's about bringing it to the table, that's the context of the game and that's a superpower when you have everybody playing with that passion and with the emotion with the team in every single ball. It makes a difference, and we're very privileged the way that the fans have been with us at the Emirates, and especially against our rivals, and on Sunday, I'm sure that the team is going to behave and make them very proud.

You mentioned the recent record; it has been very good from your perspective, five wins and a draw in your last six North London derbies. Can you put your finger on why the record has been so good and have you been able to separate the actual occasion with the actual game?

Yes, it's a game that emotionally requires something else, and you cannot be too hyped, but at the same time, that game demands that in every ball, in every action, you have to be at it a bit more than in any other game, and we have found a really good balance. Obviously, we played well. Some days, we have decided to win; some days, we've been a bit lucky as well to win. That's fair as well to say. So, on Sunday, we need a really, really good performance to beat them.

I wonder Mikel if you've seen Wayne Rooney's comments about his three outstanding players of the season so far. Semenyo was one, Bryan Mbuemo was one, Viktor Gyokeres was the third one.

That one is very good.

Just following up on that, he has come under a bit of criticism. Can you allow yourself a little smile like you're doing now?

I'm really glad that this is coming from someone like Wayne, his experience and the kind of player that he was. Actually then it's not just related to the goals that he has scored but the contribution to the team and the impact that Viktor has in our team, his work rate, the way he opens the spaces for other people, the timing that he generates for us and then as well the level of threat that he has brought to the team, which is magnificent. So I'm really happy to hear that.

How different a challenge is Tottenham this season than they were last season do you think?

Well, I think every game is very different and in the same season as well, depending on the momentum of each team, the games are very, very different. I think Thomas [Frank] has brought something very different to what they had before as well, and you just have to see his record and how remarkable a job he did in his previous club, and he's given a very clear identity to the team, how they want to play, how they want to compete, and it will be very tough.

Some people have suggested that where they are in the Premier League table has maybe flattered them based on how they play. What are your thoughts on that?

I think when you start to be in the part of the season that we are in you have to really earn the right to be where you are and I think they've done a lot of very, very good things that they deserve to win. They've won in some tough places as well. Their record away from home has been very impressive as well so you need to merit that, nobody gives you anything in this league.

Manchester City play tomorrow night, obviously ahead of you. If they win they'll be one point behind you. Do you feel they're coming after you a bit?

No, everybody's going to try to win every game, the same as we are going to do. We just have to go game by game, control the things that we can do, prepare very well tomorrow for Sunday. We have a beautiful game ahead of us, and that's what we can control.

And just lastly, a big opportunity for whoever you decide to play in place of Gabriel.

Yes, for sure and that's what we're looking for. The good thing is that we have rotated and play players in different positions at the very end of the season and whoever plays is going to be ready to do that.

The start of a big week with Tottenham on Sunday, then into Bayern Munich and then another London derby the following Sunday. How do you prepare and deal with these matches coming up, especially when you've got the injury issues you have at the moment?

Well, we've done the preparation and the international break. We knew that was coming. It was again very intense but beautiful as well. We have a very tough start of the season as well, we're ready for that. And now, have everybody healthy, or the most of them healthy, which is a key thing obviously. And then again, get in the rhythm, start to generate momentum again.

We are in a really good moment, and we need to continue to do that game by game because the games are going to be very thick and fast, and we need to be ready. Everybody has to be at it.

It's not just Arsenal that are suffering with injuries at the moment. Tottenham as well and seeing it across football. A large part of both squads could be out if they don't come back for the match on Sunday. Do you think injuries are taking away from the quality of the game at the moment?

Injuries are part of football. Obviously the demands that those players have in the way that the schedule is, obviously there's more demands than ever and probably that's going to bring more injuries. We will try to avoid that as much as possible but you can see that in many clubs, even in different countries as well. So we're going to have to live with that.

And then just on Gabriel Jesus, how is he getting on in his rehabilitation?

Very good. He's doing everything with the team at the moment for the last almost two weeks. We're going to give him some exposure as well internally with some games so he gets that fitness. But he looks really good in training and he's going to be a big addition to the team.

Eberechi Eze, it's going to be a big game for him on Sunday because he could have joined Spurs during the summer. What advice would you give him because from some sections of the support, the away fans, they may not be overly happy to see him play in this game?

Nothing special, nothing different to any other player. I'm very happy that he is with us. I think Ebz over the years he had many options to go to different places. At the end, he was allowed to leave, and he chose to come here, which I'm very, very happy and proud of. It's going to be a game that I can't wait for him to experience because it's very special.

You've spoken about the importance of the North London derby. You never lost one as a supplier and you never lost one as a manager. What's the secret?

I don't know. Try to prepare as well as possible. Try to perform during the game and try to be better than the opposition.

It must come down to just more than that. You used to have this magnificent record.

No, but I have lost games against Spurs as a manager…

Oh?

Yes.

I didn't think you had. Bukayo Saka reports he's going to be offered a new contract. You were talking to him about a new contract. How important is it for you that he signs up because he joined the club as a nine-year-old and could become a player who stays at one club for his career?

Well, what I'm very aware of is that he wants to continue with us, that he's very happy and that he's in the place that he wants to continue to be and achieve everything that we want to achieve together. And then when that happens and how it happens, I leave that to Andrea [Berta] and the club to figure it out.

And lastly, this now is a period of four months before international break again. So largely this next period of 25, 30 odd games, whatever it is, is going to define your season. In terms of that, how delighted are you that it's now going to be all guns blazing towards what could happen at the end of the season? You've just got your players from now until March.

Well, we have a lot of work to do till that point. Again, go game by game, put the focus in the present, the things that we can do and we can control, try to improve every single day, try to be a better team. We’ll have different periods playing different kinds of oppositions. We'll have different resources available as well in the team. Try to be as competitive as we win and win as many games as we can.

Mikel, can I just ask you about the Eze deal, which from the outside seemed to move so quickly. What was it like for you experiencing it and was there any point where you sort of feared he could go to Tottenham or you wouldn't get him in the building here?

Well, I don't know. At the end there are three different parties. My feeling when I spoke to him that he wanted to join, then it's all about timing and winning football, which is something very difficult to predict and maybe doesn't work.

What I'm very glad is that it did work, it worked in a great way. I'm very happy with what he's doing and still how he can do for the club and the team. It's just the start of the journey.

We've sort of seen flashes of great moments from obviously the goal against Palace, things like that, but do you think there's still a lot more to come from him? What more can we expect to see from him in Arsenal?

A lot, because those relations you have to build and creative players need to understand that because it's all about connections, about timing and him really flowing. He's playing in a different position, the more he's settled in one of the positions and has started to interact with players a bit more friendly, which he's doing at the moment, his natural talent will come out and he will have even a bigger impact on the team.

We saw that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was with you guys recently. How important is it to you to reconnect with those players, players that have played with you in the North London army around this time and what do they bring when they do return to the club?

Well, it's great to have him around. Very proud to have him because first of all he wanted to be back. So when that happens, he's a player that's been out and he wants to come, it's a really good sign. It means that he feels loved here, respected and he believes it's the right environment for him to again start to build something new in his career. We all know Alex, how a magnificent person he is. He can be a great example for the other players as well with his experience and even for me. So good to have him around.

He did an interview with Ben Foster as well in which he talked about when Thierry Henry came back that period, that second time he was at the club and he said that he felt like they learned that Henry brought an edge that was kind of lacking from that team, a nastiness was the word that he used. Do you feel like your team now has nastiness, an edge to go on and win these games and titles?

Yes, I do feel that we have everything that it takes to win.

Who are the nastiest players?

It's not about that. I don't know if that's the best word. It's at the end, you need to have everything that it requires to win and then you have to deliver and do it. But I really believe in my team.

Just on Calafiori, is it to do with his load? Because I think this season he's played very consistently, he's been available for every Premier League game. Compare that to last season, it's obviously a much stronger fitness record. So is it more about managing him throughout these moments?

Yes, he's been dealing with a little issue and he played and we as well rest him and take that load because of that. When he got into the last game and had to travel with the national team, they were very understanding of that issue and that's when they allowed him to come back.

With Martin Odegaard, I was just wondering, before he got injured against West Ham, I think he was roaming around the pitch a little bit more than usual.

That's a lot then!

But at points he was very central, at points he was on the left and I was just wondering, is that something you'd like to see again when he's back fit?

Yes, we have new players and new players create new connections, create new ways of attacking especially and we need to let that flourish. We are learning a lot from them, and where they feel comfortable, how they can do that in the most efficient way and when he's back in the team, I'm sure they will be able to do other things as well.

Just specifically on the six players that were injured before the international break, when we spoke to you before Sunderland, you were quite optimistic on their recoveries at the moment. Are you more optimistic than then, same level, or less optimistic?

I am, but it's the final stage, and now is when there is contact around them, when they have to be pushed into very unpredictable things that they haven't done. I think they are going to be with us soon, I don't know if Sunday is going to be too soon.

With replacing Gabriel, one of the great strengths you had was that pairing of Gabriel and Saliba and the consistency that that offered to the team around them. Do you have to try and recreate that or do you almost need to lean into the fact that one player can't replace Gabriel and there may need to be two or three stepping into that position?

No, because every player brings their specific qualities and Gabriel is his leadership, his presence and the love that he has to defend and to transmit as well his body language to other players. We have to do it, and we have to spread that. People will step up, we've done it in the past many, many times. Unfortunately, we played last year the biggest and most problematic part of the season without him as well, and the team was able to cope with that.

This week Quique Sanchez-Flores, ex-former Watford manager, he recognised in an interview that he was quite sad this summer when he saw Zubimendi leaving Real Sociedad to come to Arsenal because of the Spanish league losing its talent. But he also said that Arsenal have made a really big step forward to fight for trophies because of Zubimendi signing. Zubimendi also scored this international break with Spain. How high do you rate him in the level of best midfielders in the world right now?

Well, all my players are the best. To compare them with other players, I don't think he's fair. I think each player has his own qualities. I think the impact of Zubimendi in the team is unquestionable. I think what he's doing and doing it so well as well in his career here is very, very impressive and that's what we need. A player at that level, playing consistently and helping the team is going to be very positive for the team and the results of the team.

Do you see him being in the line-ups of the Spain World Cup next summer?

That's for the manager to decide. Hopefully, he will do so well here that he will have a great chance and a big headache for the manager.

Just on Ben White, it was maybe a little bit of a surprise before the international break that he didn't start any of the three games in a week, especially the one in Prague. Are you still at the stage with Ben where he's really carefully managing his minutes after the injury issues?

We had a period, after now I think it's in a much better period. Now we have to pick players in relation to the opponent and the game and the best combinations that we think so he needs to continue to train very, very hard and wait for the opportunity because he's going to have it.

He's always been such a warrior for us, he's shown so much trust in him. Do you still have that sort of trust, not so much in him but in his body, that he can handle the games that are going to come up?

Yeah, but now he needs to do it when he plays and prove that like any other player. That's the test, that's the level. Jurrien has been incredible as well this season. We know the level of Ben and how incredible he can be for the team, so that's it. Everybody will have options.

Just very quickly, just on Kieran Tierney during international break, he’s still so loved here by the fans. We have such a special, special moment with Scotland. What were your thoughts when you saw that goal? I'm sure you absolutely loved the moment here.

Well, very happy for him and very happy for all the Scottish people as well because I lived that for two years and I had an amazing experience and I fell in love with their passion and how they treat people. So, I'm very happy for the country.

The latest Tottenham Hotspur injury news as Thomas Frank prepares his team ahead of the Spurs manager's first North London Derby

Tottenham Hotspur could welcome back Mohammed Kudus for Thomas Frank's first North London Derby as the club's manager.

Kudus' last game in a Tottenham shirt was against Chelsea earlier this month. After suffering what has been described as a "knock," the 25-year-old missed Spurs' next two games against Copenhagen and Manchester United.

The Tottenham winger has spent the international break recovering after not being selected for the Ghana squad. Kudus is now just over a week away from missing an entire month of football following his £55m move to Spurs from West Ham.

The longest Kudus has ever been out with injury is 84 days. This was when he suffered a rib fracture while playing for Ajax. But with so much uncertainty regarding his current condition, football.london has taken a look at the latest news surrounding the Ghanaian international.

What has been said about Kudus' injury?

Frank gave an update on Kudus during a press conference on Friday, saying: "Kudus trained as well today. He's available."

Ahead of Tottenham's kick-off against Copenhagen earlier this month, Frank said: "Unfortunately Kudus couldn't make it. He's got a knock. Djed is ready but it's positive that Destiny [Udogie] can start."

A week on from Kudus first being sidelined with injury, Frank was asked about his condition ahead of Spurs' clash with Manchester United.

The Spurs manager said: "Yes, everyone came through well, so it's good. We'll say the ones that have been out for a small spell, Cuti and Dest, responded well so fit and available. Kudus is touch and go for tomorrow, we'll see."

Regarding Kudus being dropped from the Ghana squad, Frank said he was "very confident" that his winger "should be available for the next one."

Will Kudus be fit to face Arsenal in Gameweek 12?

The official Fantasy Premier League website gives Kudus a 50% chance of playing. The 25-year-old is currently selected by 19.9% of managers and has racked up 45 total points this season.

Following Frank's quotes on Kudus' recovery ahead of the clash with Man United, almost half a million managers transferred Kudus out of their team.

Whether Kudus is fit or not, the Tottenham forward may struggle for points this weekend as they come up against the toughest defence in the league.

Arsenal have conceded just five goals in the Premier League this season. Their record is even better in the Champions League where, after their first four games, they haven't let a single goal in.

However, this isn't to say Spurs have no chance of scoring. Frank's side have scored 19 goals this season — the fourth highest in the league.

The new Spurs boss will hope he can give the club their first win at the Emirates since 2010, when Arsene Wenger's Gunners fell 3-2 to Harry Redknapp's side.

The double Arsenal fitness boost no one is talking about ahead of Tottenham

rsenal could welcome back several of their previously absent stars for the North London Derby this weekend. Mikel Arteta has been dealt many blows already this season, most recently with Gabriel Magalhaes coming off against Senegal for Brazil.

The return of other stars could help mitigate the loss of such a presence. While Gabriel Jesus was spotted again with the Arsenal team in pictures ahead of the weekend, a return for the striker still seems premature.

It is worth remembering that Jurrien Timber trained with the group for a significant period of time before returning to the fold on the final day of the 2023/24 season. So a return for Jesus would be a fantasy.

For Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke, however, that could be a different story. The pair are pushing to return for the derby and could offer Arteta some game-changing quality he lacked in the clash with Sunderland.

Description

Thomas Frank is holding his first North London Derby press conference of the season on Friday afternoon as Spurs prepare to travel to Arsenal on Sunday.

The two local rivals will do battle at the Emirates Stadium with eight points between them with the Gunners sitting four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. Spurs currently lie in fifth place in the bunch of five teams all on 18 points after the tight opening quarter of the campaign.

This latest derby will be a duel of two teams who have worked hard on their set pieces while it will also be a game defined by injuries. Tottenham remain in double figures when it comes to injured players while Arsenal have their own issues with centre-back Gabriel the latest player injured in the recent international break.

Frank will deliver an update on Spurs' treatment room, including Mohammed Kudus, Dominic Solanke's progress from his ankle problem and whether Randal Kolo Muani can play in a specially-fitted mask after fracturing his jaw in the draw with Manchester United this month, potentially evoking memories of Harry Kane's look in Spurs' North London Derby win in the 2015/16 season.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold is among those putting the questions to Frank. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at Hotspur Way.

Agent confirms return date for second Tottenham star after Dejan Kulusevski injury boost - Football London

Tottenham are expected to welcome back several first-team players from injury before the end of 2025 including instrumental attacking midfielder Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham are finally edging closer to welcoming back a number of first-team players in a much-needed boost for Thomas Frank.

Spurs, much like last season under Ange Postecoglou, have lost a number of key senior stars due to various fitness problems since the beginning of the campaign.

In fact, some are also still yet to return from long-term problems they sustained last term prior to Europa League glory in Bilbao.

Radu Dragusin is one of those after the Romanian defender ruptured his ACL during the 3-0 triumph over Swedish outfit Elfsborg in January.

However, after playing 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Leyton Orient during the international break, Dragusin's agent Florin Manea has now confirmed he expects the 23-year-old to be back available and playing regular minutes from December.

Manea told Romanian show Fanatik Superliga earlier this week: "He is fit now. The coach is slowly starting to put him in. In December he will be selected. From December to March, he will definitely get matches. He is ready.

"He has been there long enough, 10 months. It is his time. I am glad we did not rush. He will be there in March. Okay, now I hope that Mircea [Lucescu] calls him.

"Maybe he does not call him. In March he will be per cent ready. He wants it more than ever. He can't wait to come back. We have not exchanged messages. "I will meet him in London tomorrow. We planned to go out and eat. We are focused on his return. In this regard, believe me, he pulled more than he could. Robocop. He seems faster, stronger, from the images I have seen."

The central defender might not be the only Tottenham player to return to action next month, either.

Sweden boss Graham Potter has also claimed this week that he expects to see Dejan Kulusevski back around Christmas time following patella surgery in May.

Dragusin also completed some training with his Romania international team-mates during the break.

He's now targeting a starting berth in their crunch World Cup play-off semi-final against Turkey in March.

If Romania are able to get through in Istanbul, they would face Slovakia or Kosovo for a place at next summer's World Cup finals.

First though, Dragusin will focus on his own rehabilitation after completing the crux of his recovery work.

He has slowly been drip-fed back into Tottenham training and is now targeting his first competitive minutes since he picked up the injury at the beginning of the year.

Spurs are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Arsenal in the North London Derby. They then travel to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League before facing Fulham and Newcastle.

Arsenal's North London Derby clash with Tottenham splits the predictions from our Arsenal podcasters

Arsenal take on Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby and must do so without one of their best players of the season so far, Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian defender joins a roster of players who are missing for both teams in, as it always is, a vitally important match.

For Mikel Arteta, he has options, but this week is building up to being a monumental one in the Gunners’ season, and our Seeing Red podcast hosts appear to agree. On the first episode of our brand new weekly unofficial Arsenal podcast, John Cross and Tom Canton discussed the upcoming clash.

From the subsequent clash with Bayern Munich and Chelsea to come, to the hangover from the draw with Sunderland, both raised the importance of winning this derby. Although that said, it was not a full house of predicted victories for Arsenal from the pair.

“I honestly think this is a defining week for Arsenal,” Cross said. “I really do.

“I think the way that the Sunderland game finished, it was almost as if Arsenal had suffered a massive blow to their title hopes. I was thinking, and look, I do think Arsenal would have been hugely disappointed not to have won that game because when you go 2-1 up, bearing in mind they've not conceded in so long, you thought, well, they won't concede again.

“They're still four points clear at the top. They've got a big margin to their next big rival, and so I think you need to kind of keep it in context.

“But having said that, if they then basically come off the back of that and then the international break, and as I say, Tottenham, Bayern Munich and then Chelsea. So I think if you kind of come away from those three games with two wins and a draw, then I think all of a sudden everyone will be going, my word, Arsenal.”

“Basically, Arsenal, they are strong mentally. They have got depth of squad to cope with injuries, you know, and sort of any setbacks on the international break, and then basically they are right in the mix for the time, because they've got this mentality which screams, you know, we're making a statement, we're coming back.

“But if they do have any disappointments in those games, any setback, then all of a sudden it's sort of, you know, it's licensed to kind of, you know, for people being ultra critical, say, well, have they got the mentality after all? One little setback, and all of a sudden, the wheels are coming off slightly.

“So I don't think you can understate, not just Spurs, but also I think for the rest of that week, just the importance of these seven, eight days or so over the course of the season. I think it really will tell us a lot, and it could be a defining week for Arsenal's season, I think, I really do.”

There is only so much a team can achieve when they have lost so many of their biggest stars to injury, but Arteta has seen a massive amount of investment go into his group in the summer. He has players like Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie to call upon.

Arsenal have a real chance to make a statement with the games that follow the break, especially with the challenges of the players that will be missing for Arteta. However, Canton is ready to accept dropped points and still claim a perfect week for the club.

“Yeah, there's absolutely no doubt. If you'd offered me two wins and a draw, but the draw was in the Bayern [Munich] game. If Arsenal get a win over Chelsea and Spurs, I think that's absolutely huge," he said.

“If one of those league games ended in a draw, I still think there'll be some discourse around whether or not that'll be two games in three that Arsenal would have dropped points in the Premier League. So that still, I think would raise a couple of, even though the difficulty of the opponents is definitely important in the context of it.

“It's just for me, I'd look at those three games and obviously we'll talk more about the Bayern game in next week's podcast after the derby's finished and we'll have the knowledge of what's happened in that game.

“But I almost get the sense that after winning four from four in the Champions League, they can almost afford to look at that Bayern game as one they can rotate players in, rest players for the Chelsea fixture away from home in a few days’ time, because they don't have to win that buying game for the league phase.

“If it were a group stage match, it might be a slightly different context, but because of the way the league phase works now, if you win five games in those eight, you're pretty comfortably going to be sitting most likely in those top eight positions, and Arsenal have already won four from four.

“The Bayern game for me is not necessarily a vitally important game, but it definitely is a game that, if they were to get a positive result, can stand out as a statement and provide that extra morale boost, momentum boost, certainly going into the Chelsea game. And also, I've got the depth these days to be able to rotate and still be incredibly competitive in those games, too.”
