Description

After winning the Europa League in the penultimate match of the season, Ange Postecoglou's expected departure from Tottenham Hotspur was thrown into doubt.

His promise of bringing a trophy to the club in his second season was kept and there was a feeling in the dressing room that the Australian should be leading them into the Champions League next year. Yet despite all of this, it was simply not enough.

On Friday evening, Tottenham confirmed they had parted ways with the 59-year-old. The statement that followed was one we have come to expect when a football club moves in a different direction with their manager.

There was a thank you for his efforts, an explanation that the club needs to 'compete on multiple fronts' and the failure to do so resulted in his departure. All expected apart from the obligatory comment from the man at the head of the boardroom - Daniel Levy.

As our reporter Alasdair Gold pointed out on social media, it is not a case that Levy has simply stopped commenting on personnel's departures. Ryan Mason and Donna-Maria Cullen both received a published quote from the chairman in their exit statements.

As did Mauricio Pochettino when he was sacked. And yet, the manager who delivers a major trophy to the club does not receive one.

Of course, the reasoning behind this is unclear but as Gold points out, Levy has missed a clear opportunity to own his decision, which is a critical one.

Either way, this is not a good look from the Spurs owner and now he must ensure he is confident that Postecoglou's replacement can do better than him. Otherwise, fan resentment is only going to grow further.

Description

Thomas Frank is the favourite to succeed Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur after the Australian's dismissal.

Spurs announced on Friday afternoon that they will be looking for a new head coach after sacking former Celtic boss Postecoglou. The 59-year-old leaves after Tottenham endured a dismal domestic campaign in 2024/25, with the club finishing 17th in the Premier League table.

Postecoglou led Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years after the Lilywhites beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final. Victory in Bilbao also secured a place in next season's Champions League and a welcome £100 million cash boost.

But Tottenham's domestic struggles have cost Postecoglou, and Brentford boss Frank is the bookmakers' favourite to succeed him in north London. When asked about his future at the Gtech Community Stadium last month, the Dane confirmed he is as focused as ever with Brentford after their 3-2 defeat to Fulham.

"Right now, of course, I am committed," he said. "I just lost to Fulham, our local rivals, so [I am] fuming in every aspect.

“So yes, I am committed like I have always been.”

Now the 24/25 domestic campaign is over, it remains to be seen whether Frank will stay at the Bees, who finished tenth - seven places above Spurs.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has also been linked with the Spurs hotseat in recent months as well as Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola.

Announcing Postecoglou's dismissal, a statement on the club's website read: "It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond.

"This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.

"We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home.

"News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course."

An open letter to Ange Postecoglou after one of the greatest nights in Tottenham Hotspur history

A thank you to Ange Postecoglou after Spurs boss is sacked by Daniel Levy - Football London
Description

The saga is over and so is Ange Postecoglou's reign as Tottenham Hotspur head coach.

A ruthless decision has been taken by chairman Daniel Levy and the board to sack the former Celtic boss, despite him delivering a first piece of silverware in 17 years.

Although, as it has been made crystal clear on the club's official website, this was not just Levy's decision.

"The board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place," the statement read.

I find it hard to believe that such a decision would be unanimous, at least in the first instance. There may well have been some cajoling, some prodding, some 'you should really see it this way'.

This club of ours is not used to winning anything. In my 41 years on the planet I had only witnessed us win three major trophies prior to this season (I'm not counting the UEFA Cup in 1984 by virtue of having been four months old when it happened).

Of course, I agree that when making a decision of this nature you need to take emotion out of it, you need to think about the bigger picture, but that sure is hard after what happened just two weeks ago.

It felt like we had finally eradicated that awful Spursy tag. It felt like finally we had got that monkey off our back and we could stride forwards, heads held high and be what we have always wanted to be - winners.

Now, it is easy to feel like losers again.

Ange Postecoglou was not perfect, he will attest to that himself. He got things wrong, sometimes very wrong, but in exactly two years he delivered something higher profile names have failed to do in N17.

The players loved him. And he loved them and stood by them. He was always in their corner, always championing them, giving them the tools and the encouragement they needed to succeed. Many are probably hurting right now and it will be interesting to see who comes out and makes statements on their social media platforms and who, now he has gone, thinks about following him out of the door.

The football, at times, was thrill a minute. Just what Spurs fans needed after the set-up from previous managers. A ten-game unbeaten run to start his tenure was exciting and invigorating. That extraordinary 4-1 defeat with nine men against Chelsea was as entertaining as any victory I've enjoyed in my years supporting Tottenham.

He had a philosophy, a vision, a will to win and nothing was going to stand in his way. I enjoyed the stubbornness at times. It felt like he put two fingers up to the established football society in this country and said 'get stuffed'.

But there is an element of that lasting only so long. The Premier League is ever changing, you can't stand still, you have to adapt and change and roll with the punches and there were occasions when it felt like Ange was unwilling to do that.

There were extenuating circumstances, of that there can be no doubt. The horrific injury situation put us on the backfoot early on in the Premier League campaign this season and he was not helped by a transfer policy that focused on young talent for the future rather than the here and now.

He got on with it though. He played the hand he was dealt and when he knew any hope in the Premier League was gone, he focused on the Europa League. And boy did it pay off.

He changed his philosophy in Europe. Spurs became hard to beat away from home against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt. It was all set up for a tilt at winning a trophy, something we have desperately craved for so long.

The final in Bilbao was one of the worst finals in living memory, but do any Spurs fans care? Not a jot.

We won. We lifted a trophy. We dared to dream.

The outpouring of emotion at the final whistle in Bilbao, in homes up and down the country and then on the open-top bus parade was incredible.

Yes the Premier League campaign was atrocious and some of the football we served up was shocking, but the focus was solely on the Europa League, you could see that. And you could see he was willing to adapt.

We needed to see him adapt in the Premier League and in my opinion I felt he had bought himself more time. At least a few months into the new season, with another transfer window behind him to bring in the players he needed for the here and now, to see what he could do. He deserved more time.

Alas, it is not to be and I'm sure he will go on and, as promised, win trophies elsewhere.

Thank you, Ange, for one of the greatest nights of my life. You will forever be a Tottenham Hotspur legend.

Tottenham have confirmed that the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou as head coach is to give the football club the "strongest chance" of competing on multiples fronts for the coming season and beyond. Friday evening saw confirmation of Postecoglou's exit from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following plenty of speculation about his position at the club.

In what was a difficult season for Postecoglou and his Spurs players as they finished 17th in the Premier League table, the Australian did lead the football club to Europa League glory as their 17-year wait for a trophy finally came to an end. Just over two weeks on from that triumph in Spain, Postecoglou has exited the club on his second anniversary of taking on the hotseat following a decision by chairman Daniel Levy and the club's board.

In a statement released by the club, Spurs outlined the reasons for the 59-year-old's dismissal.

"Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties," read the club statement.

"Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month - an achievement that will live with us all forever.

"We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

"However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.

"It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.

"We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home.

Description

Ange Postecoglou has issued a statement following news on Friday that he had been sacked by Tottenham.

Despite leading the club to a first piece of silverware in 17 years with a historic night in Bilbao when Spurs lifted the Europa League trophy after a 1-0 win over Manchester United, the Australian has been sacked.

Spurs finished the Premier League season in 17th place and that has led to chairman Daniel Levy wielding the axe.

Postecoglou has released a statement moments after the news broke, via his agency CAA Base, speaking of his pride at the job he did in N17.

Postecoglou said: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride.

"The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.

"That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.

"We have also laid the foundation that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them.

"I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I need to push on. It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis.

"And finally I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special.

"We are forever connected. Audere est Facere. Ange."

BREAKING: Ange Postecoglou sacked as Tottenham head coach by Daniel Levy - Football London
Description

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as Tottenham Hotspur head coach. The Australian departs Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite leading the north London club to Europa League glory in May.

Postecoglou's future has dominated the headlines across the 2024/25 season after Spurs finished in a disappointing 17th place in the Premier League table. Chairman Daniel Levy has now made a decision and it means Tottenham will be on the lookout for a new head coach.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Marco Silva of Fulham have been linked with the Spurs hotseat in recent months and the same goes for Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. Postecoglou's dismissal comes on the second anniversary of his appointment as Spurs boss.

The 59-year-old guided Spurs to fifth in the Premier League table during his first year in the job and a place in the Europa League. Tottenham were to exit the Carabao Cup at the first time of asking away at Fulham and then in the fourth round of the FA Cup following a home defeat against Manchester City.

Making it clear that he always wins a trophy in his second season at a club, Postecoglou did just that as his Tottenham side beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final courtesy of Brennan Johnson's goal. Upon their return from Bilbao, Postecoglou and his team were greeted by over 200,000 fans in N17 for their victory parade.

However, speculation still surrounded a possible Tottenham exit despite their Europa League triumph due to their wretched form in the league that saw them finish 17th. In the end that has resulted in Postecoglou exiting the football club and now Levy needs to find his replacement in the weeks ahead.

A statement released by Tottenham on Friday evening read: "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make a move in the summer transfer window.

The first of two transfer windows this summer is now open, but only until June 10, after FIFA allowed an early opening to give teams competing in the Club World Cup in the United States of America an opportunity to strengthen their squads.

The window has been open for all clubs, but Spurs have yet to make a move. The transfer window will be open fully from June 16 until September 1, but Tottenham may well be behind the eight ball by then.

One of the main reasons why Tottenham have not made any inroads into new signings yet is because of the confusion that hangs in the air around N17 over the future of head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou delivered the Lilywhites' first trophy in 17 years when Spurs triumphed in the Europa League final over Manchester United, but that trophy win, which saw them qualify for the Champions League, was beset by a dismal Premier League campaign in which Spurs finished 17th.

Postecoglou had taken the decision earlier in the season to prioritise the Europa League over the Premier League - a move which did cause consternation with some behind the scenes in N17.

However, it was a move that subsequently paid off with Spurs lifting the trophy in Bilbao, Spain, ending a 41-year barren European run.

It remains unknown whether or not Postecoglou will be given the chance to continue as Spurs head coach into next season, with everyone remaining in the dark when it comes to chairman Daniel Levy 's position.

And while we wait, other clubs in the Premier League are making their moves in the transfer market, which will leave Tottenham playing catch-up.

Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are in advanced talks over a deal to sign his teammate Florian Wirtz.

Manchester United have signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and look increasingly likely to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford too. Chelsea, meanwhile have brought in Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.

Manchester City have not completed a deal as yet, but reports suggest they are close with moves to sign Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves.

Arsenal should seal a deal for midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, with a striker also on the Gunners' radar - although a deal to sign one is not yet close.

That's nine transfers that have either been completed or are close to completion at Spurs' five big-six rivals. While the Spurs rumour mill remains quiet, while everyone waits on a decision over Postecoglou's future.

The Australian has been on holiday, following the culmination of the season, but work could have been done on transfers behind the scenes - if we knew who was guaranteed to be managing the side in the 2025/26 season.

The longer the wait goes on, the more Tottenham will find themselves behind their rivals when it comes to strengthening their squad.

Description

Archie Gray's season is not over just yet following his inclusion in England's Under-21s squad for this summer's UEFA Under-21s EURO Finals in Slovakia. Lee Carsley's Three Lions team begin their tournament on Thursday with a Group B opener against Czech Republic, before then facing Slovenia and Germany in their other two group games.

Gray is Tottenham's sole representative in the 23-man England Under-21s squad after teammate Dane Scarlett was forced to withdraw from the pre-Euro training party due to injury. Scarlett has since uploaded an image from the gym at Hotspur Way to his Instagram Stories as he bids to get back to full fitness ahead of a big pre-season.

Gray will be joined at the tournament by fellow Tottenham stars Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel, who are representing France Under-21s in Slovakia. As it is a summer with no senior international tournaments following last year's European Championship and Copa America, Ange Postecoglou, or whoever is in charge at Tottenham next season, will have the majority of his players at his disposal early on in pre-season.

That was not the case 12 months ago as the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven missed the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea due to their international commitments. The trio and a number of their Tottenham teammates will be in international action over the next six days with 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the UEFA Nations League final and friendlies all taking place.

The last of those will see Tottenham's South American stars play in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with Gray and England Under-21s getting their campaign underway with a match against Czech Republic the following day. In regards to the UEFA U21 EURO Finals, the group stage ends on Wednesday, June 18 and the knockout phase commences three days later.

If either Gray and England Under-21s or Odobert, Tel and France Under-21s go all the way and make the final then it will be played in Bratislava on the evening of Saturday, June 28. Tottenham's first pre-season friendly is in the calendar for Thursday, July 31 when they take on Arsenal in Hong Kong, thus giving those involved in the finals plenty of time to recover, enjoy their summer break and return slightly later ahead of the pre-season tour.

After a wretched 2024/25 Premier League season which saw the Lilywhites finish 17th in the standings, pre-season is going to be vitally important to the team as they look to get back to challenging towards the top of the Premier League table. If it is to be a new manager at the helm rather than Postecoglou, the opportunity to work with the vast majority of his squad very early on in pre-season will only be a good thing as he looks to get his ideas and football vision across.

Tottenham's 2024/25 season ended in glory after their Europa League triumph but it is now about trying to reach the next level, challenge for trophies once again and get some consistency into their game following such a long period of mixed results in the Premier League. A strong pre-season campaign is going to be key to Spurs hopefully achieving their goals and that is only going to be helped by having near enough the full squad available from the get-go.

Description

Daniel Levy is entering uncharted territory at Tottenham Hotspur as he makes major changes behind the scenes and deals with the aftermath of a rarity of his time at the club - silverware.

Ange Postecoglou won only the second trophy of the Levy era and the first European title at the north London club in 41 years with the Europa League triumph in Bilbao. Now the Australian finds his future the subject of intense speculation as he and his staff await news on whether they will continue in their roles for the coming season.

It comes at a time when change aplenty is occurring at Tottenham with a new CEO in Vinai Venkatesham starting work on Monday, the departure from the board of long-time Levy advisor Donna-Maria Cullen ahead of that and the expected return at some point in the coming months of former managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

It is a new era for Levy with different voices around him and some big decisions to make to build on the success Postecoglou brought with that victory in Spain, which also delivered Champions League football for next season as well as a place in the UEFA Super Cup in August.

There are also set to be large scale changes to the medical and sports science departments, while there are also rumours of investment on the way, either through owners ENIC or through external sources.

Tottenham's midfield transfer plans include major decision over £50m duo after Postecoglou decision - Football London
Description

Tottenham have plenty of decisions to make when it comes to their midfield in the transfer window which is currently open for a short spell.

football.london has already looked at what needs to happen in the defence and now it's time to work out what the summer holds for Spurs' midfield and winger options as well as who might come into the club. We fully appreciate that while the future of Ange Postecoglou remains in limbo it's difficult to look too far into new signings but there are certainly plenty of situations surrounding players that will still be the case regardless of who is in the dugout.

When it comes to central midfield all eyes will be on the progression of the younger midfielders on long term deals as well as the contract status of the older ones.

Lucas Bergvall has still been at Hotspur Way this week while others are on holiday as he goes through rehabilitation on his ankle injury. The 19-year-old will be looking for a huge second season after sweeping the club awards in his first campaign at the club.

Likewise Archie Gray will be wiser and more assured in his second season and should get to actually develop in his favoured midfield role. Pape Matar Sarr will also continue to grow in the midfield after another season of development with some big performances.

Of the older central midfielders, Rodrigo Bentancur has impressed on the pitch on the whole and is likely to be offered a new contract, with his entering its final year as he turns 28 this month. Yves Bissouma is in the same situation but the Mali international, who turns 29 this summer, has proved less dependable during this campaign despite returning to the fold and doing well in Europe in the final weeks of the campaign.

Logic would suggest that only one of those two midfielders, who cost the club around £50million in all, will get a new contract and Tottenham will look for a new deeper-lying midfielder this summer. Spurs have plenty of admiration for Adam Wharton, as they do a number of Palace players, but after a trophy-winning season themselves and European football next time around, the Eagles aren't exactly going to be desperate to offload all of their stars.

Tottenham hold a clause with Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso that allows them to sign him on the cheap or get a cut of his sale, as part of the deal that took Giovani Lo Celso to Spain last summer. However, Atletico Madrid look set to sign the USA international.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will join Marseille permanently after his season in France on loan. A decision must also be made on what comes next for academy midfielders Alfie Devine and George Abbott, who have enjoyed successful loan spells away from the club at Westerlo and Notts Country respectively. Both players could be in line for new contracts along with new loan moves, although for Devine there may be more of a decision involved for him as he has already had three loan moves.

When it comes to central attacking midfielders at Tottenham there are only James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, so that is a clear department in need of strengthening and the Europa League final showed that with both out, as did the final game against Brighton.

Back to Crystal Palace again, because the most wanted player at Spurs for a while has been Eberechi Eze. The England international is represented by Base, the agency that looks after most of the north London club's key players and also Postecoglou and has had long, very close links with chairman Daniel Levy. Eze would be perfect for Tottenham with his ability on the ball, versatility and his ability to excite the fans.

Again though, everything depends on Palace and whether they are willing to sell, with Eze having just two years left on his contract. The Eagles can ask for plenty for him but it's probably their last chance to do so. Spurs have also got an interest in Southampton attacker Tyler Dibling with the Saints' relegation potentially giving them more reason to sell for a financial boost.

When it comes to wingers at Tottenham, the options are more plentiful with this season's top scorer in Brennan Johnson, captain Son Heung-min, Wilson Odobert, youngster Mikey Moore and loan player Mathys Tel, as well as those who have been out on loan in Yang Min-hyeok, Manor Solomon and Bryan Gil.

Son's contract has just a year left to run after Spurs took up the option to extend it by 12 months and a decision will have to be made over the skipper who finally lifted a trophy when others could not. He has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League but the South Korean is worth a lot to Tottenham both on and off the pitch.

The exciting 17-year-old Moore probably needs a loan move next season - and a link-up with Ryan Mason at West Brom would make plenty of sense - but Tottenham will probably want to keep him in house for now, especially as he can be included on the B list in Europe.

Tottenham will look for another winger in the summer transfer window to bolster their options in the final third. Timo Werner has now left the club and with Tel, Spurs will look to get that price tag knocked right down or get a deal to take him on loan again.

In terms of those coming back from loans, Yang will be looked at again this summer and most certainly taken on the club's tour to Hong Kong and South Korea. Gil expects to leave the club with Tottenham looking for a permanent solution with only 12 months left on his contract.

With Solomon having earned promotion with Leeds, the Elland Road club are expected to try to bring the Israel international back permanently after a successful loan but there is set to be some competition for his signature.

There is also the returning Jamie Donley, who shone on loan at Leyton Orient and can play anywhere across the front line or in a central attacking role. The 20-year-old will look to impress again in pre-season before a decision is made on whether he heads out on loan to the Championship next time out.

Academy youngster Damola Ajayi will also hope to catch the eye this summer after scoring his first goal for Spurs in that Europa League win against Elfsborg. The 19-year-old could be set for a loan move to accelerate his first team exposure next season.

The lack of tournament football this summer means Tottenham will have more of a senior squad for pre-season training and friendlies so any youngster is going to have to star in order to catch the eye.
