Frank and Richarlison furious

Richarlison has just been booked for his remonstrations after that Newcastle opener.

Djed Spence was adjusting his boot, which had come off.

Thomas Frank is also unhappy and he's made that clear to the fourth official.

Frank's midfield dilemma

Thomas Frank faces a midfield dilemma on Wednesday night when he selects his Tottenham team to face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup. The Dane has already said on record during Monday’s press conference that he’s considering changes as he seeks to strike the right balance on Tyneside.

Archie Gray looks set to miss the trip after picking up a muscular injury in training. Gray had been in line to start in midfield after recently featuring at left-back in the 0-0 Champions League draw at Monaco.

The young Englishman has been itching for more opportunities particularly in the centre of the park. Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur have played plenty of football to date and there is a strong chance Palhinha could fill in at centre-back if Frank decides to rest Micky van de Ven.

Bentancur is also the kind of player you can depend on in these type of matches when the home team are expected to enjoy large spells of possession. The Uruguayan is in form but this could be the chance to hand him some rest ahead of the visit of Chelsea.

Pape Matar Sarr looks a shoo-in as the Senegal international scored on Sunday at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and has been desperately out of favour of late. Sarr always provides huge energy in the middle of the pitch and he’ll be keen to send another message to his head coach if he gets the nod.

Who partners him is now up for debate but there appears to be a serious chance Lucas Bergvall could play as a No.8. The Swede has had a mixed campaign to date after winning Tottenham’s Player of the Year award last term.

Double Newcastle blow

Eddie Howe has delivered an update on his Newcastle squad ahead of Wednesday night's Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham. The holders are bidding to retain the trophy following their historic triumph over Liverpool at Wembley back in March.

However, the Magpies do not have a fully fit squad available and full-backs Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento remain absent through injury.

Hall picked up a hamstring issue in the 4-0 Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels and he remains sidelined. Meanwhile, Livramento is still out after picking up a knee ligament injury in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last month.

There is also doubt over the availability of centre-back Sven Botman, who suffered a nasty cut to his head in the dramatic 2-1 win over Fulham last weekend.

Tottenham suffer devastating injury blow

Archie Gray is set for a spell on the sidelines, becoming the 10th first-team player out injured for Tottenham manager Thomas Frank.

The former Leeds midfielder, 19, was in contention to start in Wednesday night's Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle at St James' Park. But it's understood the versatile youngster has picked up an injury in training and will play no part in the clash.

There has been no confirmation on the severity of the issue, although reports have suggested that the highly-regarded star could be out for around a month after hurting his calf.

Tottenham predicted XI vs Newcastle

All eyes are on Thomas Frank's team selection as Tottenham make the long journey to the North East to face Carabao Cup holders Newcastle at St James' Park.

Spurs have already been battling fixture congestion since the return of club football and with a tasty Premier League derby with Chelsea on the horizon, Frank will be cautious that he needs to keep his squad fresh.

Despite that, the League Cup represents a chance for the Dane to win his first trophy as Tottenham boss and he is unlikely to take the competition too lightly, particularly given the strength of the opposition.

Here's how we think Frank will line-up his Spurs team this evening.

Tottenham are expected to shuffle their pack when they bid to eliminate holders Newcastle from the Carabao Cup

The Swede has had a mixed campaign to date after winning Tottenham’s Player of the Year award last term.

There is also a chance he could play as a No.10, although given Xavi Simons was subbed on the hour mark at Everton, it wouldn’t be a surprise to the Dutchman handed a starting berth of Tyneside.

Ultimately, the key factor that will shape Frank’s selection is whether he’s prepared to unleash Van de Ven, Palhinha and Bentancur again.

Spurs are in the midst of an unforgiving run of fixtures and the Carabao Cup is unlikely to be of greater priority than both the Premier League and Champions League, respectively.

Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday evening, with both sides having a number of injury concerns to contend with

As Tottenham Hotspur prepare for their lengthy trip to the North East to take on Carabao Cup holders Newcastle United at St James' Park, all eyes are on manager Thomas Frank's team selection.

With a demanding schedule since the return of club football and an enticing Premier League derby against Chelsea looming, Frank will be mindful of the need to maintain his squad's energy levels.

However, the League Cup offers the Danish manager an opportunity to secure his first piece of silverware at the helm of Spurs, so it's unlikely he'll underestimate the competition, especially considering the calibre of the opposition.

With injuries to contend with, Frank must determine how best to manage his team over the next week, with rotation likely in key positions. Below are all the injuries both teams have going into Wednesday's game.

Tottenham

Archie Gray

Injury: Unknown

Gray has picked up an injury in training and will play no part in Wednesday's match. There has been no confirmation on the severity of the issue.

Expected return: Unknown

Cristian Romero

Injury: Groin/Hip/Pelvic Injury.

Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero is expected to remain unavailable until the weekend. Frank has provided an update on Cuti's injury, stating: "Cuti was just out running on the grass with the performance guys. So, positive, progressing, but no time frame. I don't expect it to be a longer one."

Expected return: Unknown.

Defender Destiny Udogie is expected to be sidelined for about a week due to a knee injury.

Frank said: "Destiny is not on the grass yet, but still progressing, again, not a longer one."

Expected return: Unknown.

Dejan Kulusevski

Injury: Knee

Kulusevski is nursing a knee injury, is set to remain on the sidelines until late November.

Frank said: "He's a key, key player for us. Instead of putting an exact month on [his return]. I just want him back as quick as possible.

"I know the medical team and Dejan are working very hard on that... It's not tomorrow, hopefully not too far away."

Expected return: Fulham (H), November 29.

Dominic Solanke

Striker Dominic Solanke is making progress with his ankle injury, but he's unlikely to make a comeback on Wednesday.

Frank said: "Dom, positive, he's taking steps in the right direction and was on the grass on his own today. So, he's progressing forward."

Expected return: Unknown.

Ben Davies

Ben Davies is dealing with a thigh injury that he picked up during the international window and will be out for a few weeks.

Expected return: Unknown.

Radu Dragusin

Radu Dragusin has been out of action since suffering an ACL injury against Elfsborg in the Europa League in January.

Frank said: "He's progressing well. He's been on the grass for three weeks and is progressing as well as it should. We all know coming back from an ACL is a long one - he's on track - but it will be a few weeks before he's able to be involved."

Return date: Unknown.

Yves Bissouma

Injury: Ankle.

Bissouma will be sidelined for several weeks due to an ankle injury sustained while on international duty.

Frank said: "Biss, unfortunately, had a situation with the national team, I think everyone saw that, so he got a ligament injury to his ankle that will keep him out for weeks."

Return date: Unknown.

Kota Takai

Takai is anticipated to make a comeback in the next few weeks following an ongoing ankle problem. His fitness levels will need to be built up.

James Maddison

Maddison suffered an ACL rupture during a pre-season match and will be absent for a significant part of the season.

Newcastle United

Yoane Wissa

Injury: Knee.

Newcastle are yet to see their £55m summer signing after he injured his knee in action for DR Congo shortly after finalising a deal to join United. His recovery had a minor setback, but he is expected to feature in the coming weeks, although Howe has sounded a note of caution over his participation.

What Howe has said: "If you look at Yoane's situation, he will need almost a pre-season. Pre-season schedules that we give to players will be six weeks. And we do that for a reason, so we can build them up and they can play in various games, and then they're ready to perform. So I'm not saying he won't play for six weeks. But I think to get to his very best level, it will probably take that time."

Expected return: West Ham (A), November 2.

Lewis Hall

Injury: Hamstring.

The ex-Chelsea academy graduate has endured a frustrating run of fitness issues in 2025 but is nearing a comeback. United took a measured approach with him following his recovery from a lengthy problem during the summer, though he sustained a hamstring problem against Union Saint-Gilloise.

Nevertheless, Howe remains optimistic he could feature again shortly – possibly against West Ham next weekend.

What Howe has said: "Lewis is doing really well. He's been on the grass for a while and is pushing himself. He's done back-to-back sessions now. He'll hopefully not be too far away now."

Expected return: West Ham (A), November 2.

Tino Livramento

Injury: Knee.

The England full-back landed awkwardly on his knee after an aerial duel with Arsenal's William Saliba and has been absent since September.

He received an eight-week recovery timeframe, suggesting he may need to wait until after the November international break. What Howe has said: "Tino is on the grass for the first time today, and he's making really good progress, so we're really happy with him."

Expected return: Man City (H), November 22.

Sven Botman

Injury: Head.

Botman was substituted after sustaining a head knock during Fulham's leveller on Saturday. United protested for a foul, but replays suggested the contact appeared unintentional.

Nevertheless, the Dutch centre-back has avoided concussion, and whilst he might miss the midweek cup fixture, he should be available to feature straight away.

What Howe has said: "I think he's OK. There's no concussion, it was a cut, but a very good recommendation from the on-field physio to take him off."

Expected return: West Ham (A), November 2.

Harrison Ashby

Injury: Thigh.

With Livramento and Hall already sidelined, many believed it presented a chance for youngster Ashby to earn his senior debut following multiple loan moves. He appeared regularly during pre-season, but Howe disclosed recently that the ex-West Ham full-back was nursing a thigh complaint.

What Howe has said: "Unfortunately, at the moment Harrison is injured, and he has been injured for a period of time with a thigh injury, so we are waiting for him to be fit again."

Thomas Frank now has 10 first-team players out injured in a huge injury crisis for Tottenham

It is a huge blow for Gray, who could have started in his preferred midfield role on Wednesday night. He was used in defence under Ange Postecoglou last season and Frank has relied on his versatility too.

The setback means Frank is now with 10 first-team players. Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Kota Takai, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke are all currently unavailable for Spurs.

Meanwhile, Frank wants Tottenham to go all the way in the Carabao Cup this season, but questioned why the semi-finals were still two-legged.

Spurs travel to holders Newcastle in the fourth round on Wednesday, eager to stay on track for more silverware after they ended a 17-year drought with Europa League success in May under Frank’s predecessor Postecoglou.

Tottenham played 60 matches in the 2024-25 campaign and the midweek trip to St James’ Park will be the club’s 15th of this season, which has led Frank to suggest a change-up for a domestic competition often under scrutiny amid an ever-growing football calendar.

“By the way, one thing I’ve been thinking about is that there should only be one semi-final,” Frank said.

“I think two reasons. For the smaller clubs, if you want to beat a bigger club, it’s much much easier to play only one game, so we really want someone to break out and it’s not the same boring same teams winning – of course except from Spurs!

“Then we need to skip one semi-final for everyone else that plays so many games. It should only be one.

“If it’s about money, then someone needs to fix it. If it’s Premier League paying money to EFL (English Football League), because as far as I understand it, it’s because of that. So someone has to fix it. It should be very, very easy.”

Thomas Frank has called for the Carabao Cup semi-finals to be scrapped to give smaller clubs a better chance of winning the competition

Thomas Frank has made a plea for the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-finals to be scrapped in order to prevent the "same boring teams" from consistently winning the competition. Newcastle ended an 11-year streak of victories by Big Six clubs in the competition when they hoisted the trophy in March.

Meanwhile Crystal Palace claimed their first ever major trophy in the FA Cup and the current Premier League top-four table features Bournemouth and Sunderland. Ahead of Wednesday night's match against Newcastle, the former Brentford manager suggested that the League Cup schedule should be altered to give smaller teams a better shot at winning silverware.

"There should only be one semi-final," the Dane insisted. "I said that before at Brentford and that's why I'm very happy to say it again."

"For the smaller clubs, if you want to beat a bigger club, it's much easier to play only one game. So if we really want someone to break out and it's not the same boring teams that are winning - of course except for Spurs - then we need to skip one semi-final.

"For everyone else that plays so many games, it should only be one. So if it's about money then someone needs to fix it. If it's the Premier League playing money to the EFL, because as far as I understand it's because of that, so someone fix it. It should be very easy."

The last occasion the EFL Cup semi-final was contested over just one leg was during the Covid-affected 2020-21 campaign when Tottenham defeated Frank's then Brentford side 2-0. Spurs dismissed Jose Mourinho a week prior to falling to Manchester City in the final.

Frank's Bees were beaten 3-1 by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals last term following his decision to make five alterations. "That's a long time ago," said the Dane. "I remember we lost."

Frank's Tottenham outfit - who claimed the Europa League last season - have now climbed to third in the Premier League following five consecutive away matches without defeat and five strikes from set-pieces, including two headers from Micky van de Ven at Everton.

And the Dane, 52, revealed he had extensive experience developing such moves, beginning with his Under-12 side in Frederiksvaerk and subsequently his Denmark Under 17 national squad which overcame Jordan Pickford's England team at the Euros in 2011. "They were very, very good in playing football, **** at set pieces," he laughed.

"With a proper old school coaches called Viggo Jensen, we worked on it and we scored the first goal in the Euros against Serbia then we won 3-2, then we beat England 2-0 in the second game. But Brentford was the real game-changer.

"Especially with that focus from Matthew (Benham) but especially Rasmus Ankersen. If one should have credit for the long throws it's Rasmus Ankersen. He loves that. When we beat Arsenal on the first day on a long throw in the second goal he was very, very happy."

Here is our Tottenham predicted XI for the Carabao Cup fourth-round clash against Newcastle at St James' Park

But history shows that last season, when Frank was in charge of Brentford, he wasn't afraid to rest key players as star man Bryan Mbeumo was left out of his Bees' starting XI for the quarter-final defeat against the Magpies.

football.london expects plenty of changes, notably in midfield and in attack.

Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie's injuries mean Spurs are light on the ground at the back, so Pedro Porro, Kevin Danso and Djed Spence could well be asked to go again after marshalling Tottenham to a clean sheet at Everton.

Antonin Kinsky should replace Guglielmo Vicario between the sticks after featuring in round three against Doncaster Rovers.

Porro, Danso, Joao Palhinha and Spence could make up the back four. Micky van de Ven has played a huge chunk of football this season and there is a high likelihood he will be rested.

The Dutchman is so important, however, it wouldn't be a major surprise if he featured after his brace at the Hill Dickson Stadium as Spurs bid to continue their impressive defensive momentum.

In that case, he would likely sit out next week's Champions League group match against Copenhagen.

Palhinha previously slotted in at centre-back against Doncaster and scored in the 3-0 victory. The experienced Portuguese stalwart could be a makeshift option, though 16-year-old Jun'ai Byfield is also pushing for first-team minutes.

In midfield, Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr could return to the side with Lucas Bergvall ahead of the duo as Frank's No.10.

Then in attack, Richarlison looks poised to lead the line and he could be supported by Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert on the flanks.

Mathys Tel is well rested after missing the Champions League draw at Monaco as he's not registered to play in Europe.

The Frenchman also only played the final minutes at Everton after coming off the bench in stoppage time. If he started, it wouldn't be a major shock, either.

Academy talents Luca Williams-Barnett, Tynan Thompson and Callum Olusesi could also make the bench.

What Randal Kolo Muani did after being subbed by Thomas Frank is good news for Tottenham - Football London
Description

Tottenham forward Randal Kolo Muani made his first start for the club on Sunday when he led the line in the resounding away Premier League victory at Everton

When Randal Kolo Muani glanced over to the touchline at Everton and saw the fourth official holding up his No.39, it's safe to say he was frustrated his afternoon was over.

The Frenchman, signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, has endured a slow start to his Tottenham career. A dead leg kept him out of five Spurs matches but now he's fit and ready to showcase precisely why he was signed by Johan Lange, Fabio Paratici and the club's recruitment staff.

It's a stark contrast to January when Kolo Muani hit the ground running at Juventus. He netted on his Serie A debut against Napoli and scored five times in his first three league appearances.

Life in north London has not been so smooth to date. However, slowly but surely, he is building his way to optimum fitness.

Thomas Frank has made it clear on several occasions that he was delighted to land the 26-year-old late in the transfer window.

Kolo Muani is vastly experienced, has played in a World Cup final and he can also operate from the flank if required. His numbers also speak for themselves, having been a major hit in Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt.

As the France international left the field, he was visibly disappointed to be replaced by Richarlison on 62 minutes and certainly made his feelings known.

It wasn't a strop but Kolo Muani certainly got his message across and that can only be good for his Tottenham prospects.

Outside of set-pieces, Spurs have lacked goals from open play. They now need their attackers to chip in particularly in the absence of Dominic Solanke.

Kolo Muani was sharp against Everton. He only had 16 touches but his link play and hold-up play was an asset for Spurs when they were building attacks.

He was also the most accurate passer (100 per cent pass completion) on the pitch out of the players that played 45 minutes or more.

There is every chance Richarlison will be recalled to the starting line-up against Newcastle but moving forward, Kolo Muani is now in line for more minutes and opportunities. Frank is an admirer of the player's qualities and likes attackers that can stretch the opposition defence.

Kolo Muani's reaction to being substituted only showcases his desire to succeed and he was not satisfied to be leaving the pitch early.

Richarlison hasn't scored since the 2-2 draw against Brighton in September and now is the perfect time for Kolo Muani to muck in with some goals.

Gary Neville was speaking after Tottenham kept their second consecutive clean sheet on Sunday at Everton

Gary Neville has paid tribute to Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario following a string of exceptional performances between the sticks. The Italian shot-stopper has now kept back-to-back clean sheets after starring against Monaco and Everton, respectively.

Vicario was called into question after the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa as he was beaten by long-range strikes from Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia.

However, Neville has seen a real improvement and admitted there was a time when he wasn't sold on the 29-year-old.

He said on the Gary Neville Podcast when assessing Spurs' triumph at the Hill Dickinson Stadium: “They did things certainly last season they weren’t capable of doing, and that’s being reliable when they’re not playing well.

“Can they withstand pressure? Can they soak up teams putting balls into their box? They did that today. I think they defended really well.

“The goalkeeper looks a lot better. There were times when I wasn’t 100 per cent on him, but I just think there is an element of him looking a lot more solid than he has been.”

Vicario has also been a crucial figure within the dressing room in the absence of injured captain Cristian Romero.

He's expected to be rested on Wednesday, however, when Antonin Kinsky should be handed a start in the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.

Speaking after the 0-0 draw in Monaco in which Vicario made eight saves, Thomas Frank said: "I think the two goals against Villa, I don't think it's mistakes. I don't think it's any of that.

"It was two great finishes. But what I would say, and as you said, I think he was very good today. I think some of the saves were exceptional tonight. He's a big part of why we got a hard-fought point, but at the end of the day it can be a crucial point."

Spurs now have the joint second-best defences in the Premier League. Only Arsenal's David Raya and Newcastle's Nick Pope (both five) have kept more clean sheets than Vicario in the top-flight this season.

While they have also improved from set-pieces in an attacking sense, they are also better at defending them.

Vicario made two top stops to deny Beto and Iliman Ndiaye on Merseyside last weekend. He now boasts a save percentage of 78.8 per cent - only Raya (84.2) and Sunderland's Robin Roefs (82.5) have better numbers.

Tottenham travel to Newcastle in Carabao Cup fourth-round action on Wednesday night and Eddie Howe has now delivered an update on his Magpies squad ahead of the contest

Howe has now revealed Botman had the gash stapled and the Dutchman is still yet to train ahead of facing Tottenham, explaining: "Sven has no concussion, it was a cut, a bad cut, which he had stapled together. He didn’t train yesterday, but we will see how he is today.

"Lewis is the closest to coming back out of those injured, but this game will come too quickly for him. Tino is still on track, we are looking at the Manchester City game for him for when he can be available."

Summer signing Yoane Wissa is yet to feature for Newcastle since his deadline day switch from Brentford after suffering a knee injury while on international duty with DR Congo in September.

Howe has also hinted he'll be shuffling his pack on Wednesday but he intends to strike the right balance as his side look to make it three wins on the spin in all competitions.

He added: "It is important for this game to make the right decision; we want to progress. The competition means a lot to us, we are current holders, we don't want to give that up easily. However, I have a squad, I need to try and get the balance right, there are players who need the football."

Meanwhile, Tottenham remain without captain Cristian Romero, left-back Destiny Udogie and striker Dominic Solanke.

Thomas Frank issued an update on the trio on Monday and indicated they are now edging closer to a return.

He said, whilst also confirming Spurs had picked up no fresh injury concerns after the 3-0 win at Everton: "No, all good from the guys that played yesterday. Dom stepped forward, step by step. Cuti on the pitch today, not a timeframe. Destiny on the pitch as well today. Three steps forward."

Son Heung-min 'can't wait' for Tottenham return as he speaks out on reunion plan - Football London
Description

Tottenham legend Son Heung-min has made it clear he is planning to return to London to say goodbye to the club's supporters after departing for LAFC in August

Tottenham legend Son Heung-min has revealed he is planning to return to London to say a proper goodbye to Spurs supporters. The Europa League-winning captain called time on his 10-year stay in N17 this summer when he completed a £20million transfer to MLS side LAFC in August.

However, Son's final appearance for the club was in Seoul when Tottenham played a pre-season friendly match against Newcastle. He left the field in tears to a standing ovation and both sets of players also formed a guard of honour. However, speaking during an interview with Shoot for Love, the 33-year-old made it clear he is already plotting a return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium so he can pay tribute to the club's supporters. He said: "I definitely think this is the right time to say, because at the time the transfer was going on and the last game was in Korea, obviously I will go back to London to see all the Spurs fans. "I think I deserve to say goodbye in front of all of them, and also, they deserve to see me in a physical sense to say goodbye. It’s going to be a very emotional day as well, but I think I definitely can’t wait to go back to London and see all the Spurs fans."

Son is yet to confirm details of when he might return to England. LAFC are currently gearing up for the MLS Cup play-offs when they will face Austin FC.

The South Korean superstar has taken to the MLS like a duck to water, netting nine times in 10 appearances while also registering three assists.

Back in September, he struck a memorable hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Real Salt Lake.

During the summer, Spurs put the ball in Son's court and allowed their attacker to decide his own future.

The prolific forward felt the historic Europa League triumph in Bilbao was the perfect way to sign off before he later announced he would be leaving Tottenham on August 2.

Unsurprisingly, merchandise sales in the United States soared following Son's arrival in Los Angeles.

In fact, he quickly became the top-selling athlete for jersey sales across the Fanatics Network within the first two days after he put pen to paper with LAFC.

Only Lionel Messi of Inter Miami sold more jerseys during the 2025 MLS season, which is quite the achievement considering Son only joined LAFC in August.
